Them trying to buy Judges indicates that Judiciary still holds power in the US at least to some extent
in reply to alkbch

Both true and not true.

The idea that you have to register to vote is not normal in most democracies.

For example, in the Netherlands you have to carry ID at all times, whether you are voting or just going for a walk. You don't have to register to vote, you just get mail a while before the election with a paper that you take to the voting booth, which is usually a few minutes walk away.

Such a system prevents fraud (which is already a non-issue in the USA, even with its confusing and difficult system), and also makes it easy for as many people to vote.

The goal of voter ID laws is to provide ways to disenfranchise people, by making things slightly harder and create plausible points to not count some ballots.

in reply to iknowitwheniseeit

Here in Italy we have "electoral cards" which are issued once every so many years and get reissued when expired or when you move. You need that AND your ID to vote.

Nobody makes a fuss. Just have to be an adult and remember to check if you lost yours sometime before you have to vote. Seems like a good minimum requirement for voting, being able to hold on a piece of paper.

Trump Is Asking the Supreme Court To Let Him Have Black Sites

Summary:

The Trump administration inadvertently revealed on Monday that it is attempting to trap Venezuelan migrants in a catch-22 that would effectively block them from challenging their deportation and detention in an El Salvador prison. In a court filing, the government acknowledged that it had deported at least one migrant to El Salvador due to an “administrative error”—but argued that the individual had no right to contest his imprisonment because he is in the custody of a “foreign sovereign.”

This argument confirms what’s been clear for weeks: The government intends to treat the prison as a black site where migrants have no constitutional rights whatsoever and may be subject to any treatment whatsoever—including indefinite detention, forced labor, torture, or death.

But Monday’s filing illustrates another, more subtle problem that the Justice Department probably did not intend to admit: The government is trying to shunt migrants’ legal claims through a channel that is doomed to end in failure.

It seeks to ensnare these migrants in a Kafkaesque trap from which there may be no lawful escape. And it is trying to sell this subterfuge to the federal judiciary as a legitimate opportunity for due process if any migrants have plausible objections to their treatment.

To see how hollow that promise is, just look to the case of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia. A native of El Salvador, Abrego Garcia came to the United States in 2011, fleeing gang violence. Although he entered the country without authorization, an immigration judge granted him protected status in 2019, finding that he would likely face persecution if sent back to his home country. Federal law prohibits his removal to El Salvador. The Trump administration targeted him anyway, pulling him over while he was driving with his son, who is 5 years old and intellectually disabled. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents falsely claimed that his “status has changed,” arrested him, and threatened to turn over his son to Child Protective Services if his wife did not arrive within 10 minutes. His wife, a U.S. citizen, was able to appear in time, but ICE refused to provide any information about her husband’s arrest. She did not know where he had been taken until she saw a news photo of alleged Venezuelan gang members in CECOT, a notorious Salvadoran mega-prison, kneeling on the ground, their arms raised above their shaved heads. One man, she realized, was her husband.

Abrego Garcia’s deportation was unambiguously illegal, and his lawyers swiftly filed suit demanding his return. On Monday, the DOJ responded with a bombshell admission: Abrego Garcia did have a right to remain in the U.S. and was shipped off to CECOT only because of an “administrative error.” The DOJ then declared that there was nothing the plaintiff or the government could do to fix this confessed mistake. Abrego Garcia, it wrote, would need to file a writ of habeas corpus, the traditional procedure for challenging unlawful detention. Indeed, it argued, Abrego Garcia’s claims “can proceed only in habeas”—he has no other way to fight his imprisonment. And yet, the department concluded, no federal court can hear his habeas claim, because he is “not in United States custody.” He thus has no remedy whatsoever and must remain in CECOT indefinitely.

It is a big difference to confuse the lack of privacy when an gov can access userdata in the case of an court order with the lack of privacy when private companies can spread and sell userdata.
The difference is the right of the user to access and delete his data, which exists by law in the EU, but not in the USA. The EU is far from perfect, but lightyears better in questions of privacy

Democrats Win Wisconsin High Court Race Despite Musk Cash

Wisconsin supreme court race: Liberal Susan Crawford beats Musk-backed candidate

Summary

Liberal judge Susan Crawford defeated Elon Musk-backed conservative Brad Schimel in Wisconsin’s supreme court race, preserving a 4-3 liberal majority.

The high-stakes contest, which drew over $80 million—$20 million from Musk and affiliates—became the most expensive judicial race in U.S. history.

Democrats framed the election as a referendum on Musk and Trump, fueling turnout and grassroots support.

The liberal court majority will influence key rulings on abortion, labor rights, and congressional redistricting. Milwaukee saw historic turnout, with multiple polling sites running out of ballots during the evening rush.

In particular, the race was seen as a test of Musk’s political sway, as his super PAC, America PAC, alone spent more than $12 million to support Schimel. This website has piracy sites that works in almost any tv web browser: bestfreestreaming.org/ These work in web browser included into tvs like samsung. For android tv browsers i have found that heartive.pages.dev/ works the best. Internet archive also works in android tv browsers. I have not tried it in the browsers thats included into tvs tho
in reply to piracyismurder

I haven't had a TV in about 20 years, but from what I understand they are all "smart" and need the internet these days. If I decided I wanted one, most certainly wouldn't want something that could go online.

Now- I would love a nice 60 inch display to play my MS DOS games on though- that would be sweet!

in reply to A_Asselin

Yes, you need internet to use the “smart” features of the TV. No, you don’t need internet to just use the TV. You can connect any device that is supported by the ports on the TV, for example a Raspberry PI with a DOS emulator or for example an Apple TV to replace the “smart” part of the TV.
in reply to brrt

That's OK- I don't think there is anything I want to see anyways. When my mom comes to visit I usually just get a VPN and spend some of the time together watching whatever new movies she knows about (that which I pirate for her) but I am rarely impressed with the stuff and usually just fall asleep. My last TV was the heavy kind it takes 2 people to lift. I sold it and my DVD player on craigslist for 5$ each- then went and spent the 10$ on pizza and breadsticks at little ceasars.
in reply to A_Asselin

No they don't need internet. You can keep it isolated from the net

Don't matter to wait a day or a week..

I even hate same day expedition on online shops.. never understood why people have the urge to want to have it within a day.

in reply to Lychee

I don't know of a tutorial, but most tools have to have support for I2P built in, otherwise they won't work. A good torrent client that does is qBittorrent.

Browsing I2Ps network with HTTP happens over a SOCKS5 proxy, so if aria supports that, you can use it too. geti2p.net should have more information.

wipo.int/en/web/wipo-alert

Who can use WIPO ALERT?

Advertisers, advertising agencies and their technical service providers can apply to become authorized users of WIPO ALERT in order to access aggregated lists of infringing websites from around the world.

They can use this information in their automated advertising systems to avoid placing advertisements on such sites. In this way, they can avoid subsidizing copyright infringement and protect their brands from the negative reputational effect of association with illegal activities.

The WIPO database is to protect advertising brands? Lol. Not what I was expecting, and pretty absurd to me.

So, can we see the list?

Authorized Users enter into a simple agreement with WIPO which provides that the User will use the data obtained through WIPO ALERT exclusively for preventing the misplacement of advertising on copyright-infringing websites and that it will use its best endeavors to keep the data confidential. The reason for the second restriction is that some countries feel that their lists of copyright-infringing websites should not be publicized, to avoid encouraging visits to those sites.

Confidential.

So, if it's some countries' agencies or orgs reporting or something, how accurate is the list?

Does WIPO guarantee the accuracy of the data on WIPO ALERT?

No. WIPO is simply providing a service to its Member States and to the international advertising industry in facilitating global access to data compiled at national level. The national agencies which create the lists of sites remain solely responsible for their contents.

Who is it?

World Intellectual Property Organization
34, chemin des Colombettes
CH-1211 Geneva 20, Switzerland

is one of the 15 specialized agencies of the United Nations (UN).

WIPO was created to promote and protect intellectual property (IP) across the world by cooperating with countries as well as international organizations

I wonder if you could get the list as press or data protection offices or under some transparency laws.

Finally fixed my torrent ratio

I'll admit, when I first started torrent I was not really familiar with how it worked and how important seeding was. I would just use magnet links without configuration to save the torrent and seed after completion. Well.. I have finally, got myself back to 1.00 after a couple months and working to try to always seed double what I get for each torrent.

Often times I was one of the few random seeders available for some of these torrents. Friendly reminder to give back because you never know when you're one of the rare cases that can complete someones long lost file download!

in reply to JackAttack

Private trackers enforce ratios, and good private trackers reward long-term seeding, which is part of why I like private trackers.

I'm very proud of my CG account that turns seventeen next month.

EDIT: No I don't have invites, before anyone asks.

Questa voce è stata modificata (6 mesi fa)
in reply to Snot Flickerman

I have yet to get a positive ratio on anything I've ever downloaded from a private tracker. Always have to sit and wait to accumulate points in their seeding time system... It's annoying because otherwise I'd be seeding a lot more shit for them.
in reply to lightnsfw

The trick is to use autodl-irssi or autobrr to download the torrent the second it gets added to the tracker. As long as you have a very fast internet connection, you will usually be over 1:1 before it finishes downloading.
in reply to cmnybo

For that to work I'd have to know what I'm looking for in advance... I don't really have enough media exposure for that. I usually find out about shows/movies I might be interested in after they've been out for months.
in reply to lightnsfw

You're basically never going to hit a positive ratio if you do things that way. Other people are using RSS feeds to know when something becomes available, then grabbing it on a seedbox. They get the entire thing instantly, then they start seeding to everyone else.

It is possible (but slow) to get a positive ratio if you don't have a seedbox, as long as you grab new things instantly. But, while it will take maybe 20 minutes to download, it will often take days of continuously seeding to hit 1.0.

If your goal is to hit a positive ratio, either get a seedbox or grab things immediately via a feed. If you're grabbing using a feed, you could theoretically grab popular shows even if you're not interested in them. But, it's a bit of a waste of bandwidth to grab something and seed it if you never intend to look at it. Your best bet, if you're trying not to be wasteful, is figure out a show you actually want to watch that's still releasing new episodes. Grab new episodes immediately and seed them.

Even if it's a show where you're still on season 1 and currently season 4 is airing, as long as you'll eventually get to season 4, you're not wasting bandwidth that way.

in reply to merc

Yeah, I'm not arguing with you, it's just a pain in the ass to deal with. I don't mind seeding the shit I download at all but it shouldn't be a fucking competition when it's a requirement to download stuff. Obviously they're not hurting for seeders. IMO a better metric would be having a required seeding time (which they do anyway) and let you download as much as you want as long as you seed it long enough. Like you said I'll never hit a positive ratio, even doing things your way I doubt I'd find enough shit I wanted to build up a big ratio. I'll just keep doing what I'm doing and rely mainly on public trackers and use the private ones only when I can't find what I'm looking for. I actually have quite a high ratio on both the private trackers I use just from seeding stuff for a long time and trading points in so I can download stuff, it just doesn't help my ratio.
in reply to lightnsfw

Part of the problem is that people who hit some massive share ratio are doing it at the expense of people who are simply trying to hit 1.0.

My guess is that most of the people with really high ratios aren't even aware of how much they're sharing. They just set the things to seed and then forget them. Some people do treat it like a competition, but for many it isn't. Most are probably just trying to be nice and make sure that something stays available.

What's really needed is some seeding priority thing so that someone who is trying to prove they're not a leech is given top priority to seed things, and someone who has already established their credentials is put at the back of the queue.

in reply to merc

I fail to see the problem with not being able to seed to 1:1. Most sites provide points for seeding over time which can either be used to increase upload or buy free leech tokens (which allow you to download anyway). It should be more than enough to download what you want once you have a large enough seeding size.

The BitTorrent protocol prioritizes fast seeds to achieve the best possible transfer speed. It's goal is not for everyone to be seeding to the same ratio.

Also the best way to help the network is to keep content available. For this purpose the speed of it's seeds is not as important.

in reply to Snot Flickerman

EDIT: No I don’t have invites, before anyone asks.

Yeah, this is also a problem though. I'd love to be on a private tracker as I was in the past, but once you're out it's just too much of a hassle to get back in.

in reply to RedSnt 👓♂️🖥️

Buying your way into TL via seedbox promo is a solid way to get started. This won't help for other sites but TL is miles better than all other public sites still available.

I jailbroke my Switch last year when they went after Yuzu because fuck Nintendo. It's a launch model, so no soldering or external hardware besides a jig was required. If it were a newer model I wouldn't have gone through the trouble, but it's been great not having to give Nintendo any money to play Switch games as well as to be able to run homebrew and emulators. I think I'm going to go with a Steam Deck rather than a Switch 2 - I'll miss the exclusives, but $400+ for an underpowered console is just too much to be worth it any more, and I've gotten used to being able to just load on whatever games I want.
