Massive Expansion Of Italy’s Piracy Shield Underway Despite Growing Criticism Of Its Flaws

I agree with the general idea, but this is not so simple. Also, piracy shield is very bad (and ineffective, apparently)

Massive Expansion Of Italy’s Piracy Shield Underway Despite Growing Criticism Of Its Flaws

in reply to schnurrito

After learning about the absurdity of copyright law in the USA I'm not really convinced or compelled to give a cent to these companies. It's not just paying for the content. It's giving these big corporations money so that they can lobby for laws that are against the interests of most people.

Italy seems to be leading the way to an even more bleak future. "Bleak future" seems to really be the order of the day, huh?

That did the trick. Thanks! Now I feel stupid for posting this.
in reply to SpiceDealer

For your education:

Pacman like many other package managers tries to minimize network queries, to do this you download a manifest of every package available and its installation instructions. -Sy downloads the latest manifest from all of your pacman repos, -u installs the packages whose "version" field changed between the old and new manifests.

These error messages show that the domain name the manifest had for your package was unavailable, this is why you should check for updates.

in reply to SpiceDealer

Just to add, I have been told by people who know, that you should always update when installing a new package because not doing so can leave your system in an inconsistent state. Just get into the habit of running pacman -Syu <package-name> or if you use yay, yay -Syu <package-name>

You know what I find funny. The US fucking whinges about China nearly all the time. Yet they seek to become Insular and Autarkic. They make the same mistake the Qing Dynasty did.

The Qing dynasty, is often seen as prizing its material abundance and cultural legacy so highly that it sometimes failed to adapt to new challenges and technological advancements. This narrow focus is often cited as one of the factors that contributed to their eventual decline.

Equating the greatness or state of the nation with it's wealth. That's the fall.

How do modern Linux-distros handle eSIM-integration?

I am planning to buy a Lenovo T14s (4th generation) with eSIM-cpability. Does anyone here know or can anyone tell me how modern Linux-distros like Fedora, EndeavourOS, Manjaro or Mint do handle eSIM-functionality?

Is it available without going with additional packages, can I directly scan the QR-code to active the eSIM on the system? Any experiences here?

Thanks in advance!

FYI: Audio Crackling Bug with Pipewire 1.4.1 + FluidSynth in Debian Testing/Unstable and Work-Around

In case anyone is using Debian Testing/Unstable and experiencing audio issues, I thought I'd share this.

Until the bugs get fixed, there are two workarounds:
1. Uninstall FluidSynth
2. Add systemctl --user restart pipewire to your session startup; this eliminates the problem.

As I want FluidSynth, I went with the latter.

in reply to data1701d (He/Him)

Ubuntu had a general crackling issue introduced last year, an issue around a buffer size which I fixed by copying

/usr/share/pipewire/pipewire-pulse.conf

To ~/.config/pipewire

Uncomment

pulse.min.quantum = 128/48000

And increase to 512/48000. Restart.
systemctl --user restart wireplumber pipewire pipewire-pulse

Increase buffer until stuttering ends. Note this also introduces delay to audio.

Perhaps your issue is something similar? I wouldn’t blindly make these changes on your end, but maybe it’s something to search up on.

in reply to ohulancutash

Tried that already.

Based on the report, this seems to be an actual bug - it was working fine for everyone before the update and only happens in the presence of FluidSynth.

Ubuntu probably hasn't had this version of PipeWire yet.

My work around is working just fine for now, though.

This is what fixed my ubuntu audio stuttering too

[Announcement] Path of Exile 2: Dawn of the Hunt Launches Soon

Path of Exile 2: Dawn of the hunt will launch on PC and Console soon! In this news post, we've gathered all the information you need to know about what happens on launch day and how to start downloading early.

The PC realms will go down and patching begins at: Apr 04, 2025 5:00 PM (GMT)

The servers go live for PC and Console at: Apr 04, 2025 7:00 PM (GMT)

The above times are displayed in your local time zone. You'll need to be logged into your account to see these. To change your local time, go to "My Account", "Manage Account" and "Edit Preferences".

If the timezone is displaying incorrectly for you, please disregard the above timer and refer to the countdown on the front page. Three hours before the end of the countdown, the realm will go down and patching will begin shortly after. When the countdown ends, the servers will be live and you'll be able to join the Dawn of the Hunt Leagues.

The patch size for the update will be around 31GB on the standalone client and Steam. The estimated size of the patch for Consoles is 27GB.

You can start pre downloading the patch on both Consoles now. You will still be able to play the current version of Path of Exile 2 until the launch of Dawn of the Hunt.

We've also made a torrent available for PC. Please keep in mind that this method, while available earlier, makes it a larger update as it includes all the existing client content. When patching begins for Path of Exile 2: Dawn of the Hunt you'll also have a few remaining files that you'll need to update as well.

This torrent only includes the GGPK file, so you'll need to copy it into your actual install folder once the patching server is up, no earlier than three hours before Path of Exile 2: Dawn of the Hunt launches. Please note that you can't use this GGPK file with the Steam and Epic client.

This is also your last chance to get a Settlers Mystery Box in Path of Exile 2! It will leave the store when our next Mystery Box becomes available! If you need some extra points, we recommend checking out the Path of Exile 2: Early Access or the Settlers of Kalguur Supporter packs!

You can also claim some free cosmetics by watching your favourite content creators on Twitch! Check out this post for more information!

We can't wait to see your latest adventures through Wraeclast. See you at launch!

RFK Jr. says 20% of health agency layoffs could be mistakes

Summary

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. acknowledged that up to 20% of the 10,000 layoffs at the Department of Health and Human Services may have been mistakes and will require reinstatements.

The cuts, part of a DOGE-led restructuring with Elon Musk, eliminated key programs, including the CDC’s Lead Poisoning Prevention Branch, stalling public health responses.

FDA officials confirmed some staff have already been asked to return temporarily, including teams handling drug and food inspections.

US stock markets see worst day since Covid pandemic after investors shaken by Trump tariffs

US stock markets tumbled on Thursday as investors parsed the sweeping change in global trading following Donald Trump’s announcement of a barrage of tariffs on the country’s trading partners.

All three major US stock markets closed down in their worst day since June 2020, during the Covid pandemic. The tech-heavy Nasdaq fell 6%, while the S&P 500 and the Dow dropped 4.8% and 3.9%, respectively. Apple and Nvidia, two of the US’s largest companies by market value, had lost a combined $470bn in value by midday.

Ubuntu Touch Q&A 161

Marius announced that VoLTE is now working satisfactorily for both Mediatek and Qualcomm. The modifications are already in the image for both Focal and Noble. With that said in order to use them the porter for each device must do the work on that and for Qualcomm the only device we have at the moment is the Fairphone 5. On the Mediatek side, Volla from 22 up are functional. Marius and Alfred have been running it as a daily driver for awhile and have found no major problems.

This is not just voice it is also SMS over VoLTE. AppLee reported some issues with MMS but Marius was surprised that MMS would work at all because it is a different type of protocol. Alfred attempted to test that out live but like most live attempts it didn’t work. Alfred also placed a call though and that did work.

In yet more big news, Marius has now succeeded in getting an eSIM to work. At the moment it functions only in command line but he is working on a UI for it. The fix used the Lpac library. A big shout out to the developers of that because it contains resources which we have used for lots of different things.

Marius confirmed to a questioner that both VoLTE and eSIM will have entries in Settings.

Halium 12 devices upgrade

Alagiralagir had a couple of questions. The first was to ask why all devices can’t be upgraded to Halium 12 so that they can take advantage of VoLTE? Alfred is the porter of the Pixel 3a but he expressed his view that the device has outlived its usefulness. It runs on Halium 9. It is not worth the effort of taking it further and there is not even a guarantee that Halium 12 would unlock VoLTE. There are times when the only way forward is to get a more modern phone and this is one of those times.

The Pixel 3a is not supported in Austria anymore, even if it is running the original Android. Time to let it go.

If we are going to make more use of Mastodon and Matrix we need volunteers to take care of that.

GUI Programming Recommendations

Hello all,

I'm trying to get into GUI programming, but am hesitating on using a Python library to make my first barebones program. My goal is to code basic buttons and understand how operating systems implement the way they draw windows for applications.

I have coded mostly in scientific libraries or high-level languages that are fairly simple (Python, Matlab, Julia)... Also am familiar with basic concepts and syntax from C.

Looking for recommendations to start. I am happy to learn a new PL. Interested in writing code for legacy hardware and mobile. Bonus if the codes are general enough to be written for most displays one could interact with.

How OS

Pretty much Qt. You can learn how different OSes have different way.

However, modern GUI programming is happening on the web and mobile phones. React is popular, but it's too high level and their XML-based approach is horrifically designed. Swift UI is nice, but it's Apple-only. Flutter is a good middle ground, but its Desktop capability is limited. You're going to shoot on your own foot several times.
