Mike Johnson says men need to stop ‘playing video games all day’ and get to work: ‘They’re draining resources’

"Return the dignity of work to young men who need to be at work instead of playing video games all day."

House Speaker Mike Johnson defended Republican efforts to attach work requirements to Medicaid, suggesting that young American men are wasting their lives "playing video games all day" instead of working.

Johnson's remarks came as House Republicans pushed forward a budget framework that would help finance President Donald Trump's tax cuts, with plans to slash federal spending by trillions. GOP leaders are eyeing $880 billion in reductions to Medicaid, a move critics warn could gut health coverage for millions of low-income Americans.

Bernie Sanders rally in LA draws thousands to protest Trump: ‘We can’t just let this happen’

US Vermont senator’s tour with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortes has been drawing record-breaking crowds since February

The Vermont senator Bernie Sanders drew a record-breaking crowd at his rally in Los Angeles on Saturday, which included musical acts from Joan Baez and Neil Young, who encouraged the crowd to “take America back”.

Sanders’s Fighting Oligarchy: Where We Go from Here tour has been drawing massive crowds. Aided by the progressive New York representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the team set the record in Tempe, Arizona, for biggest-ever political rally in that state three weeks ago. In Denver, Colorado, more than 34,000 people showed up – a career-high crowd for the 83-year-old Sanders. Saturday in Los Angeles saw another record: at least 36,000 people packed a downtown park.

Media Find Ways to Minimize Israel’s Murder of Paramedics

To be sure, war crimes are all in a day’s work for Israel—and covering them up is, it seems, all in a day’s work for the corporate media. In a dispatch about how Israel “acknowledged flaws” in its “mistaken” account of its killing of the rescue workers, the New York Times‘ Isabel Kershner (4/6/25) cited Israeli military affairs analyst Amos Harel on how the Israeli soldiers who did the killing “had ‘good reason to be anxious,’ and that it would be wrong to assume immediately that the case was one of ‘murder in cold blood.’”

Naturally, it would be inhumane to assume that any aspect of genocide might transpire in cold blood. And as Israel continues its quest to normalize total depravity, Western journalism is becoming ever more cold-blooded, too.

Why is evidence of  Israel's war crimes in Gaza disappearing? (Video 22mins)

Many of the images that have been seen from Israel’s war in Gaza have already been seen for the last time. With Gaza under siege from the Israeli military and tech companies censoring and taking down material, the responsibility falls on the people of Gaza to document and archive their own evidence of war crimes and genocide. How will it survive?

The Trans Organizers Building Better Housing Solutions

When Renee Lau, a special projects coordinator at the trans-led housing and wellness center Baltimore Safe Haven, transitioned at the age of 63, she lost everything. “My marriage fell apart,” she says. “The Sears Holding Company, who I worked [with] for 30 some years, declared bankruptcy, and the business that I worked for got shut down immediately.”

That’s when Lau met Iya Dammons, the executive director at Baltimore Safe Haven, who hired her as the house manager for the organization’s senior home in 2019. Currently, Lau says Baltimore Safe Haven is the only transgender-specific housing provider in Maryland, with five different houses throughout Baltimore and a sixth property underway.

“[Baltimore Safe Haven] is the [only] housing provider for transgender people in the state that [is actually] dedicated to people within the community,” she explains, an issue that persists across the country as housing-insecure trans people of all ages seek safe, dignified shelter and learn that it often doesn’t exist.

For Beth Gombos and Ashton Otte, organizers at Trans Housing Initiative St. Louis (THISL), better access and competent service for the trans community begin with education. THISL works directly with shelters, housing providers, and other entities that might harm trans people or or turn them away.

“We’re training them to learn how to interact with and accept and serve trans and gender-nonconforming people with respect,” says Gombos, who is the organization’s cofounder and executive director.

Typically, this work begins by teaching trans identity 101: gender identity, sex, pronouns, and myth busting. “We start off by trying to build a level of understanding and basic empathy for this community,” says Otte. From there, THISL educates housing providers on anti-discrimination protocol and their responsibility to ensure care and access for the trans community.

Though equitable housing policies are needed at the federal level, trans-led organizations are not waiting for the federal government to take action. They are already taking care of their own.

Sean Ebony Coleman, founder and CEO of the Bronx-based LGBTQ grassroots organization Destination Tomorrow, says housing support goes beyond providing a safe place for unhoused people to be.

“One of the biggest issues is that everyone’s at a different level when it comes to being ready to access housing, particularly independent living,” says Coleman. “The conventional shelter model has just this one-stop-shop approach, right? It’s just ‘You’re going in, we’re going to house you, you’ll stay for a little while, [and] we’ll try to get you into transitional housing or some type of supportive housing.’ [But they’re] not really going to train you as far as getting better employment or securing a better job or even sending you back to school.”

For Coleman, getting into a shelter is just the first step. Destination Tomorrow’s housing support also includes building wraparound services that consider the care of the entire person, including offering independent living support, career and academic opportunities, culinary training, mental health care, and financial literacy programs.

Looking for a Fediverse Alternative to Tumblr: Loforo vs Wafrn vs Others?

I’ve been searching for a potential Fediverse-based alternative to Tumblr and recently came across Loforo and Wafrn.

Both of them seem interesting, but I’m curious — which one do you think is better for recreating that Tumblr-like experience?

Or is there another platform out there on the Fediverse that’s an even better fit as a Tumblr alternative?

I know there’s been talk about Tumblr supposedly joining the Fediverse, but even if it does, I don’t feel comfortable relying on a centralized, corporate platform anymore.

I’d prefer to support smaller, decentralized, community-driven projects.

Do you have any experience with Loforo, Wafrn, or other platforms that could work for blogging, aesthetic sharing, and building micro-communities like Tumblr?

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Wafrn: app.wafrn.net/dashboard

Loforo: loforo.com/everyone

in reply to Teknevra

Wafrn is great, haven't heard of loforo yet though.

Tumblr has downsized to 25 people, so don't expect anything from them anytime soon.

in reply to Teknevra

I tried Loforo and there’s no way to delete an account and when I tried to email them, I never got any responses.
I wouldn’t use that site.
They do have a bunch of porn bots if that’s someone’s jam.

Wafrn isn’t bad, but it needs to improve its blocking function. However, it does seem to be in active development so I’ll keep checking in on it.

Hi I just started testing home fermenting to expand the hom cookbook. I have a few questions.

The jar is filled with:

  • 1/5th dark bastard sugar, stirred;
  • 1/5th bread yeast and some sesame seeds;
  • 1 date for aroma;
  • clear water

Set for a month now 1 week left and it is bubbling on the surface so the reaction has set.
Can I consume this to test the results or should it be refrigerated first? What kind of tools other than glass jars with valves should you have to make fermenting better?

in reply to Flemmy

You would also require a hydrometer in order to tell if the fermentation has completed.
This is the only way to ensure that fermentation has finished and prevent making further bottle bombs such as the one in the picture.

Bubbles are not a valid method to determine fermentation and you will need to use the hydrometer to get a specific gravity reading at the beginning before fermentation begins, as well as throughout the fermentation process.
If there is more sugar it is always possible for fermentation to begin again even if it had stopped.
So you will need to also have stabilizers to prevent fermentation starting again should you decide to bottle.

in reply to Coolcoder360

Even hydrometer is not safe method to tell that it's done if you have unknown biology going inside. The safest thing to do is use plastic pressure-resistant bottles that do not shatter.

And yeah, cooling will only slow secondary and make the product taste differently (maybe better, expecially since winter is over). It will not make it safer in any manner.

in reply to Alexander

Not sure what you mean by unknown biology.
I'm assuming the goal is to produce alcohol so measuring density will tell when the sugars have stopped being converted to alcohol because the specific gravity will stop lowering.
Assuming proper sanitation has been performed of course to prevent other things growing...

Or do you mean if he's fermenting not with yeast but like lactofermentation?

in reply to Coolcoder360

I mean it certainy looks like fermentation started late and there always are wild things on fruits. No boiling mentioned. There must be at least active lactics and mould seeds. Something might always try to wake up later.
in reply to Flemmy

It does not seem to be boiled anywhere, and sugar content is relatively low, and it is highly possible that this thing is contaminated by lactics by now with all the date and sesame. Which is probably good thing, it would bring some sourness and - as others here mentioned - might prevent further fermentation at some point, although there is no sure bet, as well as with pretty much everything here. If bubbling in pure sugar mixture started after 3 weeks, that's very late start, my bets are that yeast is not alone there.

So, if it smells nice, it should be safe according to US government regulations (lol yes), can't be safer - but keep your toilet paper ready and get a plunger before you need it if you don't have one, just in case.

A new place in the fediverse for conlanging and worldbuilding

If anyone is interested, I have a NodeBB instance at constructed.world/. For now email is not required to sign up.

NodeBB seems to be a spiritual successor to phpBB that aims to modernize the traditional forum experience while keeping the community atmosphere. It has many features that phpBB lacks, such as user mentions, a more modern user status indicator system, real-time chat, markdown formatting, and of course, it uses ActivityPub.

I think the more permanent discussion format of forums is a better fit for this hobby, personally.

Hopefully advertising another online conlanging/conworlding community isn't too crass, but I have no idea how else to let people know it's available.

Quindi merda, in pieno stile Silicon Valley. 💩

The Easy Fix That Saved Me From File Chaos

We’ve all hit that moment—you’re cruising through a task and then bam, a file throws a wrench in your plans. Maybe it’s the wrong format, maybe it’s way too big, or maybe you just need five different pieces to become one neat file.
It’s the Little Things That Slow You Down

These things aren’t major tech crises, but they’re annoying:

Someone sends a weird file format you can’t open

A video is too huge to attach to an email

You have three separate PDFs that should’ve been one

Instead of focusing on the actual work, you end up Googling how to “quickly compress or convert.”
What I Use to Stay Sane

That’s where Convert Eaze comes in for me. It’s just a clean, free tool that helps me convert files, compress them, or merge multiple files into one—no download needed. Honestly, it’s saved me more than once from having a mini meltdown before a deadline.
Found It While Doing Literally Anything Else

The funny part? I didn’t even go looking for it. I was checking out new gear on Hypebeast, browsing cool digital pieces on DeviantArt, and reading productivity hacks on Lifehacker when I randomly landed on Convert Eaze. Gave it a shot, and it instantly became one of those bookmarks I actually keep.

I first wrote about how helpful it was in this post, and then again here when it helped me with some last-minute client files.
Why It Sticks

I like tools that don’t try to overcomplicate things. Convert Eaze loads fast, works right in the browser, and doesn’t make me jump through hoops. It’s one of those quiet time-savers that just does its job.
Wrap-Up

If you’ve ever wished file headaches would disappear with a click or two, this tool’s worth a try. You don’t need it every day, but when the problem pops up—you’ll be glad you have it on hand.

Small tool. Big help.

A Simple File Fix That Just Works

There’s enough going on every day without adding “file chaos” to the mix. Whether it’s for work, school, or a random side project, file issues always seem to pop up at the worst possible moment.
It’s the Little Problems That Drain You

We’ve all been there:

A file’s too massive to upload anywhere

You’re trying to open a format that your device doesn’t recognize

Or you need to combine several files, like, yesterday

These aren’t complex problems—but they are annoying, especially when you’re in a rush.
One Tool That Cuts Through the Noise

I’ve been leaning on Convert Eaze to handle all this stuff. It’s a simple, browser-based tool that lets you:

Convert files between all the usual formats

Compress files without wrecking the quality

Merge files quickly and painlessly

No logins. No installs. Just clean and quick.
Found It by Accident, Kept It on Purpose

I actually came across it while doing my usual scroll through Hypebeast for sneaker drops, clicking through art on DeviantArt, and checking random digital life tips on Lifehacker. I wasn’t even looking for a file tool, but now it’s one of the few I actually trust.

I ended up writing about how it helped me in this post, and again just recently in this one when I had a last-minute file conversion emergency.
Why I’m Still Using It

The best tools don’t overcomplicate things—they just quietly do what they’re supposed to do. Convert Eaze has saved me more time than I want to admit, and it hasn’t once let me down.
Final Thoughts

Sometimes the best digital tools are the ones you don’t hear much about. They’re simple, effective, and just do the job. That’s what Convert Eaze has been for me: no clutter, no stress, just a solid way to handle files fast. Definitely one of those “glad I found this” tools.

One Less Tech Headache to Deal With

There’s something really satisfying about solving a digital problem in under 30 seconds. Most days, we deal with so many little issues that just chip away at your time—and files are a big one.
Files Always Find a Way to Get in the Way

You know what I mean. You’re ready to send something, but:

The file’s too big

The format’s wrong

Or worse, you need to stitch a bunch of stuff together and don’t even know where to start

These aren’t major issues, but they show up often—and always at the worst times.
So I Just Keep It Simple

I’ve been using Convert Eaze for a while now, and it’s one of those tools I don’t even think about anymore—it just lives in my bookmarks. It converts files, compresses them when they’re huge, and merges them when I need everything in one spot. No learning curve, no drama.
Discovered It While Doing... Pretty Much Nothing Important

Honestly, I found it while hopping between sites I check just for fun—like sneaker drops on Hypebeast, cool digital art over on DeviantArt, and random tech tricks at Lifehacker. Just scrolling around, stumbled on Convert Eaze, and it’s been part of my workflow ever since.

I talked about one of those saves in this post, and mentioned another recent experience right here.
Why I Haven’t Looked for Anything Else

Sometimes I wonder if there’s something better out there—but honestly, why fix what isn’t broken? Convert Eaze is fast, doesn’t overload you with options, and actually finishes the job without making you sign up or download anything.
Just Handy to Have Around

If you deal with files on the regular—or even just once in a while—it’s worth having Convert Eaze saved somewhere. It’s the kind of tool that steps in when you need it and doesn’t get in the way when you don’t. Clean, simple, reliable. Can’t ask for much more than that.
