in reply to blakenong

I don’t disagree on the principal or fairness but circuit breakers came about the hard way. Sometimes, markets get so many sell orders due to panic selling that they really can’t clear the trades because there’s not enough buy orders to match up. The first level is only a few minutes to give people time to chill out.

Investing is like gambling in a lot of ways, obviously, but there is no “house” to buy whatever you “bet.” Some other person or institution or whatever has to put in a buy order or your trade won’t go through at all. I think of them more that way. If you sell at $100 and no one buys it, you have something worth $0. If the exchange gets a few minutes (the first stop breakers are pretty short: 7 minutes, then 20 minutes, then a day), there will be buyers.

in reply to ShittyBeatlesFCPres

Basically, not ideal and maybe exchanges should have to be the “house” but circuit breakers are there because of awful lessons learned in previous crashes.

Police repression is a 'part of life now', activists say after Quaker centre raid

The pro-Palestine Youth Demand movement says it has been targeted with over 150 arrests since it began

Katherine Hearst
Published date: 5 April 2025 09:12 BST

"On 27 March, some 20 police officers burst in on a group of young women at a Quaker’s meeting house in central London and arrested them on suspicion of conspiracy to cause a public nuisance.

The women were activists who had gathered for an open meeting of Youth Demand, a pro-Palestine and climate justice movement demanding an end to UK government arms sales to Israel and new fossil fuel licensing. The group emerged in the aftermath of Israel’s war on Gaza, which began in October 2023."

in reply to Peter Link

When british cops are imprisoning groups of young girls in a pacifist group who havent yet done a single thing wrong, maybe they need to look at themselves in the mirror. of course, when it comes to supporting zionism, any level of repression is tolerated.

Trump Has A ‘Maximum’ Meltdown On Social Media After Hate-Watching ‘60 Minutes’

The president snapped after watching a TV show he didn’t like and said CBS should lose its license.

Donald Trump on Sunday called for “maximum fines and punishment” against CBS and its corporate parent, Paramount, over Sunday night’s “60 Minutes” broadcast.
In two separate posts on his Truth Social website, Trump complained about the show’s interview with then-Vice President Kamala Harris last year ― which he is suing the company over ― and railed against Sunday night’s reports on Greenland and the war in Ukraine.

Democrats in the US are centre-right. “Normal” Mitt Romney/GWB Republicans are far right. The current GOP is, without a drop of hyperbole, full-on fascist.

There is not any leftist political coalition to speak of in the US. Bernie Sanders is about as extreme as they come in the US- and he’s maybe center-left at his most extreme.

Israel walks back its account of the killing of 15 medics in Gaza after video seems to contradict it

The military initially said it opened fire because the vehicles were “advancing suspiciously” on nearby troops without headlights or emergency signals. An Israeli military official, speaking late Saturday on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, said that account was “mistaken.”

The footage shows the Red Crescent and Civil Defense teams driving slowly with their emergency vehicles’ lights flashing, logos visible, as they pulled up to help an ambulance that had come under fire earlier. The teams do not appear to be acting unusually or in a threatening manner as three medics emerge and head toward the stricken ambulance.

Rifts growing in the Taliban over the ban on girls' schooling

Summary

Divisions are deepening within the Taliban over the ban on girls’ secondary education, with some senior officials opposing the policy.

Acting Deputy Foreign Minister Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai publicly condemned the ban as unjust and left Afghanistan for the UAE in protest.

Despite internal dissent, Supreme Leader Haibatullah Akhundzada and his loyalists continue to enforce strict restrictions. Around 2.2 million girls remain out of school.

Families risk fleeing the country, while new laws further limit women’s freedoms, solidifying Taliban control and making policy reversal unlikely.

Notes on Civil Society’s Quasi-War with A Renegade President

My biggest takeaway, with new examples just over this weekend is this: most people outside that world, indeed, most people even in that world outside of NIH, don’t grasp what’s happening to the world of disease research and cure-finding. And the biggest barrier to is not just speed of what’s happened and lack of good information. It’s that people have a very difficult time believing it. We know that some people don’t want to fund Medicaid that goes to poor people. You may not think that way but it probably doesn’t surprise you that many people do. It’s very hard to people to believe that anyone is trying to end research into finding cures for diseases that affect everyone. The richest people get cancer and Alzheimers and Parkinson’s. Just yesterday I heard second hand from a power player in our society saying, ‘That makes no sense. Who would go after cancer research?’ And yet it is happening.

Mexico confirms country's first human case of bird flu in a 3-year-old girl

Type A H5N1 influenza has been spreading through animals and some people in the United States. There have been 70 cases in that country since during the past year, according to the World Health Organization, though researchers and studies suggest that’s likely an undercount.

In Mexico, the girl was in serious condition in a hospital in Torreon in the neighboring state of Coahuila, the health ministry said in a statement Friday. It said she had initially been treated with an anti-flu medication.

It was not known how the girl contracted the virus. Investigators were testing wild birds in the vicinity of the girl’s home, the statement said.

in reply to Peter Link

There is so much about the reporting on this story that is driving me bananas.

If we take the IDF narrative at face value, they're asserting that they caught half a dozen militants who were unarmed and embedded with 9 medics. They then ambushed and killed some number and detained all the remaining unarmed personnel. They identified 6 as captured prisoners of war and 9 as non combatants and summarily executed all survivors and defiled their bodies.

And the coverage is like... 'Israel was caught lying about how many medics they executed. Chat are we cooked 🤪?'

The framing of the coverage should be that as Israel's genocide in Gaza moves into a new era in which the US president is no longer subtle in their embrace of extermination of innocent civilians, the army begins to experiment with open defiance of internationally recognized laws against war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity.

That's the story. This is like Elon's sieg heil. The mainstream news is trained to find bullet casings and hold the poor accountable. But they have no idea how to react when the most powerful people in the world start spree-shooting in Times Square cackling.

There's no mystery to solve! The story you're covering is how other people with power are reacting and responding to naked attrocities, but the NYTimes is staffed by fucking Westworld robots! It's maddening!

Example #3194 for blind people enjoying Mastodon/the fediverse BECAUSE many people post with picture/video description

Link to the post: mstdn.ca/@ChristineMalec/11428…

Some Details about media descriptions (Also commonly called "ALT Text", see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alt_attr… )

Lemmy also has ALT texts when you upload an image.

Other reasons why ALT texts are awesome:
- people with smartphones sometimes configure their clients to NOT download pictures/videos to save data. Picture Descriptions enable them to a) interact with these posts properly without the risk of not understanding a big part of the post. b) enables the conscious decision if they want to see this media.
- search engines can index this post better, so your post will have more reach when you duckduckgo for it.
- fediverse people searching for things can find your post
- people who are confused what the image on the post means can read the picture description to understand nuances they missed. And there are many reasons why that might be the case
- people not knowing people/scenes referenced in the image
- different sense of humor, so they don't get the joke, but might want to understand the joke
- different life experience - the viewer might be a 14 year old child - so they don't get the joke, but might want to understand the joke
- people having difficulties reading emotions depicted in the facial expressions in the picture
- people having not slept enough or are otherwise exhausted

however, it should also not matter why people might not understand the picture, because there are probably plenty of other reasons i don't know why it is perfectly normal to not understand a picture.

and even when you think that you only have 12 followers - none of which you think need a picture description - your post might get boosted; it might get viral accidentally because it hits a nerve.

However, of course there are times when you don't have the energy to describe the media properly. This is fine! We all know situations like this.

  • For mastodon, there exists a bot which can generate a picture description using a local artificial intelligence hosted on their server: fuzzies.wtf/@altbot (see the profile description on how to use that)
  • It is even possible to mention them in lemmy: @altbot@fuzzies.wtf (it might be the case that your instance doesn't know about this account yet, but then you can search for "@altbot@fuzzies.wtf" which will force your instance to index this account.
  • You can request help with alt texts by including hashtags like #ALT4me
  • when you receive a picture description, either from the bot or from other people, you can edit your post and insert the picture description afterwards.

Thanks if you participate in making the fediverse an awesome place for people with reduced sight! 💜

There is also a seemingly toxic side to this, as people call out the ones who do not add alt text to their pictures. While it is helpful and inclusive, it is not a requirement and people who don't do it (be it unknowingly or otherwise) should not be treated badly or called out for it.
in reply to Fedditor385

People should not be treated badly in general, but not "called out"?

I run into video-link-only posts in text forums on Lemmy every so often, and IMHO, they contribute little more than noise. There's nothing wrong with encouraging their authors to at least add a summary or start a conversation about the subject matter. Without that, video links that aren't of obvious widespread interest usually feel like they're treating the rest of us as a click farm, whether we're vision-impaired or not.

in reply to Fedditor385

I've seen people make positive posts about Alt text like this one, and I've seen people comment with #alttext4you or whatever, but the main toxic thing I've seen on Mastodon is the jerks that lash out against the person giving them free alt text 🙁

Alt text is one of the nicest parts of fediverse culture to me. I really liked learning about why it's there and how easy it is to do, even if you're not that bothered you can be open to other people adding it for you.

It makes me sad to see people lash out about it or joke about Alt Text culture on Bluesky.

But I guess it must be based on a kernel of truth that some people were toxic about it or else why would there be a backlash? IDK.

in reply to sem

Well, there are people who encourage others to add alt text, and there are those who want to force everyone to add alt text. I saw both...

Germany is now deporting pro-Palestine EU citizens. This is a chilling new step | Hanno Hauenstein

Germany has recently taken a chilling new step, signalling its willingness to use political views as grounds to curb migration. Authorities are now moving to deport foreign nationals for participating in pro-Palestine actions. As I reported this week in the Intercept, four people in Berlin – three EU citizens and one US citizen – are set to be deported over their involvement in demonstrations against Israel’s war on Gaza. None of the four have been convicted of a crime, and yet the authorities are seeking to simply throw them out of the country.

The accusations against them include aggravated breach of the peace and obstruction of a police arrest. Reports from last year suggest that one of the actions they were alleged to have been involved in included breaking into a university building and threatening people with objects that could have been used as potential weapons.

But the deportation orders go further. They cite a broader list of alleged behaviours: chanting slogans such as “Free Gaza” and “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”, joining road blockades (a tactic frequently used by climate activists), and calling a police officer a “fascist”. Read closely, the real charge appears to be something more basic: protest itself.

in reply to wewbull

Again, I agree with everything above, I also think Germany is doing the wrong thing. In your last paragraph you say exactly what was my argument: Germany acts like it has a debt to repay. I can say from the perspective of a German that that is exactly what everyone here feels like is expected of us. Eternal atonement. Repaying what cannot be repaid. This has never changed since Germany lost WWII.

You have to consider that Germanys position regarding international relations is unique. The allied states gave us back our freedom not under the condition of being friends with Israel, but essentially owing a debt. Nobody ever let us forget what would happen if we "got out of line" again.

That is not only true on the level of international politics, but also in everyday life. When you travel to the US, people will straight up ask about the Nazi-Autobahn or whether you are a Nazi yourself. In Poland, people just might be a bit more unfriendly to you because of what your country did to theirs. In many places of the world you can buy "history pieces", from SS emblems to signed copies of "Mein Kampf". The whole world still kind of thinks of the Nazis when they talk about Germany, and if its even just 1% of what they think, it's still there. Like, no offense taken, but I don't know about any other country in this position. Russia, the US, Great Britain, France, even Japan or Italy. I don't think any of these countries' citizens get asked uncomfortable questions about their countries past when on vacation. Their children do not grow up in the knowledge that they will have to bear the sins of their country, and put them on their children too.

So, Germany accepted this role, these expectations, and does its best to keep to that. Nobody here thinks it would be internationally accepted if we "emancipated" ourselves from this duty. I think many Germans want to, at least in my social bubble. But do you think we could, without any repercussions?

I think what we need is absolution, forgiveness, a new beginning with no strings attached. A real, equal friendship between Israel and Germany. Trust. Otherwise we will just stay paralyzed by our infinite moral debt. I don't think this will happen in our lifetimes. Not with the current Israel, the current US, the current Germany.

TL;DR: I wanted to give an perspective on why Germanys position is kind of unique in this world. It is one of the biggest economies, a sovereign state, but still not free in decisions regarding Israel.

in reply to RandomlyRight

I get where you're coming from. It's a hard legacy to inherit, but honestly most European countries have terrible events in their past. Germany's is just the most recent.

It's sad that travelling as a German is so awkward. Americans can be ignorant jerks, so that doesn't surprise me much. Few of them know how mainstream Nazi thinking was there before they entered the war. They treat us British as occupiers that they had to kick out, rather than the ancestral home of their founding fathers. Best to brush them off.

With many other places WW2 kicked off a series of occupations that only finished with the fall of the Soviet Union. It's still raw.

I think what we need is absolution, forgiveness, a new beginning with no strings attached. A real, equal friendship between Israel and Germany. Trust.

There is no absolution. There's just time.

(Germany needs a good therapist)

You're focusing on Israel as being the answer. Israel is not the Jewish diasporas. What Israel wants is not the same thing as what the Jewish people want. What about all the Jews around the world that see Israel killing in their name and are disgusted by it? They then see Germany by Israel's side?

Ukraine, on the other hand...defending a nation against a clear aggressor. A foreign policy slam-dunk, yet it's France and the UK taking the lead.

Be a rock. Be solid. A good world citizen. Be worthy of the world's trust and then you will be trusted.

Expert IT Staffing Solutions: Find the Right Tech Talent, Fast

In today’s high-speed digital economy, technology evolves at lightning speed. Businesses that want to stay ahead of the curve must keep their IT departments agile, responsive, and packed with top-tier talent. However, the growing shortage of staff in IT has made this task increasingly difficult.
To stay competitive, forward-thinking companies are adopting Expert IT Staffing Solutions that go beyond traditional recruitment. These advanced solutions integrate generative AI in staffing services, flexible contract staffing options, and robust global workforce management solutions to meet complex talent needs at scale.
In this comprehensive blog, we’ll dive deep into how these strategies are reshaping recruitment, empowering companies to thrive in an increasingly digital, global, and fast-paced market.
The IT Talent Crisis: A Global Shortage of Staff
According to Gartner and other industry reports, the global IT talent shortage is expected to reach 85 million unfilled roles by 2030. Whether it’s cybersecurity, AI development, cloud architecture, or DevOps engineering, businesses across sectors are feeling the pressure of the ongoing shortage of staff.
Several key trends are fueling this crisis:
Rapid digitalization: Every industry is becoming tech-driven, increasing the need for IT talent.

Emerging technologies: Fields like AI, blockchain, and IoT require niche, evolving skills.

Aging workforce: Many senior IT professionals are retiring, with fewer qualified individuals to replace them.

Remote work globalization: Companies everywhere are competing for the same pool of remote tech professionals.

The result? Intense competition, rising salaries, and longer hiring cycles. Solving this crisis demands a multi-faceted approach—starting with Expert IT Staffing Solutions.
What Are Expert IT Staffing Solutions?
Expert IT Staffing Solutions are advanced, strategic hiring models that align business goals with cutting-edge recruitment techniques. Unlike traditional hiring methods, these solutions focus on quality, speed, fit, and scalability.
Top-tier staffing agencies specializing in expert IT roles offer:
Niche specialization (e.g., AI, cybersecurity, fintech)

Customized hiring models (permanent, contract, temp-to-hire)

Proven screening frameworks for tech skills and culture fit

Global sourcing capabilities to access remote and international talent

AI-powered tools to accelerate matching and eliminate bias

These solutions empower businesses to remain agile in the face of uncertainty, project fluctuations, and unpredictable growth.
Empower Recruitment: A Strategic Talent Partner
A key aspect of successful IT staffing is partnering with agencies that focus on empower recruitment. This approach prioritizes long-term relationships, business alignment, and people-first strategies.
Empower recruitment firms don’t just fill roles—they help businesses:
Build resilient IT teams

Increase retention by matching values and vision

Integrate diversity and inclusion into hiring

Use workforce analytics to make better hiring decisions

By acting as an extension of your HR team, empower recruitment agencies help you move from reactive hiring to proactive talent planning. They also provide post-placement support, ensuring your new hires ramp up quickly and deliver immediate value.
How Generative AI in Staffing Services Is Transforming Hiring
One of the biggest disruptors in modern recruitment is the adoption of generative AI in staffing services. These tools are revolutionizing how staffing firms and HR departments source, assess, and engage candidates.
Here’s how generative AI in staffing services improves the process:
1. Automated Resume Screening
AI algorithms evaluate thousands of resumes in seconds, flagging only the most relevant profiles based on job criteria, experience, and soft skills.
2. Job Description Creation
Generative AI writes customized job descriptions optimized for search engines and candidate engagement, increasing visibility and applicant quality.
3. Predictive Hiring
Using machine learning, AI predicts a candidate’s likelihood of succeeding in a given role, improving long-term retention rates.
4. Diversity and Bias Reduction
AI helps eliminate unconscious bias by anonymizing applications and focusing solely on skill and experience.
5. Candidate Engagement
AI-powered chatbots and email automation tools personalize communication at scale, keeping candidates informed and engaged throughout the hiring journey.
By implementing generative AI in staffing services, companies and staffing firms significantly reduce time-to-hire, improve candidate experience, and ensure better hiring decisions.

Contract Staffing: A Flexible Solution for Immediate Talent Needs
In the face of a persistent shortage of staff, businesses are increasingly relying on contract staffing to fill gaps quickly and efficiently. This model provides on-demand access to qualified professionals without the burden of long-term employment contracts.
Benefits of Contract Staffing:
Scalability: Ramp teams up or down based on project demand.

Specialization: Access rare or niche skill sets for short-term needs.

Speed: Fill roles in days rather than weeks or months.

Cost control: Avoid expenses associated with full-time employees, like benefits and long-term commitments.

For example, a software development firm preparing to launch a new SaaS product may need 5 UI/UX designers for a 6-month sprint. Through contract staffing, they can onboard skilled professionals quickly, focus on delivery, and scale back post-launch.
When supported by Expert IT Staffing Solutions, contract staffing becomes a competitive advantage rather than a temporary fix.
Going Global: Workforce Management Beyond Borders
With talent shortages in local markets, companies are increasingly adopting global workforce management solutions to tap into skilled professionals across borders.
Whether hiring developers in Eastern Europe, data analysts in India, or cybersecurity experts in the Philippines, these platforms streamline every aspect of remote hiring:
Compliance: Ensure international labor law, tax, and benefits compliance.

Onboarding: Provide a consistent, seamless process for global employees.

Productivity Monitoring: Use tools to track KPIs, performance, and engagement.

Payments and Payroll: Manage multi-currency payroll and benefits packages across countries.

With global workforce management solutions, businesses can eliminate geographic constraints and unlock true talent mobility—crucial in today’s remote-first world.
Real-World Success Story: Global Tech Expansion Made Possible
Let’s consider the case of a U.S.-based health tech startup scaling operations into Europe and Asia. Facing a severe shortage of staff in software engineering and IT security, the company turned to an empower recruitment agency that specialized in Expert IT Staffing Solutions.
The agency utilized generative AI in staffing services to create detailed candidate personas, match profiles from a global database, and auto-generate interview workflows.
Within 45 days, the startup:
Onboarded 12 contract engineers across 4 countries

Ensured compliance via a global workforce management solution

Reduced hiring costs by 30% and launch delays by 50%

Established a pipeline of vetted candidates for future roles

The result? A successful international expansion—powered by smart staffing.
The Future of Staffing: Intelligence, Agility, and Empowerment
As technology evolves, so must staffing strategies. Here’s what’s next for companies embracing Expert IT Staffing Solutions:
1. Total Talent Strategy

Plex issues but not on Jellyfin

Anybody else had this issue.

I have a media server setup with Plex and Jellyfin and now people here prefer Jellyfin but Plex is available on more devices and my users prefer it.

Now I tried watching several movies on iPhone via Plex app and it kept freezing and I had to exit and start again and half the time it wouldn’t remember where I was. I tried to watch the same movies on Jellyfin, again on iPhone and no issue.

Any thoughts? I did watch a movie at my friends on Plex through Firestick with no issue so not sure if it’s iOS or my home network and Plex or something else.

in reply to dependencyinjection

Jellyfin is avaliable on almost everything as far as I am aware (excluding games consoles). Havent used Plex much but I know for Jellyfin the majority of my users issues relate to iOS. Id check your encoding of the specific file they have issue with M series macs can be weird with certain encodes of h.264 for example or a specific audio type. Here is a decent breakdown of codec support by client/browser jellyfin.org/docs/general/clie…
in reply to fennec

Jellyfin isn't available for Samsung TVs or Hisense TVs. Yes, this can be solved by any Android TV box but they likely don't want to.

I've given someone a FireTV stick and they still used the built in OS until I gave it to someone else. (And then they wonder why I can't do anything about ads for them, but that's besides the point.)

Most of my plex users stream via Playstation, an area where Jellyfin has essentially been locked out. I let my users know how they can access my Jellyfin for the upcoming loss of remote play, but almost all of them opted to just pay the $2/mo to keep using their Playstation client.
in reply to wjs018

I use my PS4 all the time with Jellyfin with no issues. Just have to open it in the browser.
in reply to DannyBoy

Ah, I'll have to try that out. I kind of forgot that the Playstation even has a browser.

Pretty sure Geek has a request feature the last time I registered.

Also, NZB files contain user info that can be used to ban an account if shared outside

in reply to SmokeFree

#Semplice, veloce, senza limiti inutili

For the First Time, Artificial Intelligence Is Being Used at a Nuclear Power Plant

For now, the artificial intelligence tool named Neutron Enterprise is just meant to help workers at the plant navigate extensive technical reports and regulations — millions of pages of intricate documents from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission that go back decades — while they operate and maintain the facility. But Neutron Enterprise’s very existence opens the door to further use of AI at Diablo Canyon or other facilities — a possibility that has some lawmakers and AI experts calling for more guardrails.

Think Israel Is Bad? Wait Until You See Its Society!

Israeli society isn’t just celebrating the genocide in Gaza—they’re actively participating in it.
📌 Chapters:
0:00 - Intro
1:00 - The German Society & Nazi Holocaust
3:05 - Israeli Society & Gaza Holocaust (Very Interesting)
8:25 - Prof Finkelstein Compares Between Israeli society and Nazi Germany.
9:50 - Israeli Society's Active Participation in Genocide.
13:05 - Poll Showing Only 1% of Israelis Think Gaza Genocide Was Too Much.
14:00 - Genocidal Society?
15:04 - The U.S. President Who Called Out Israel's holocaust

In this video, we examine how Israeli society is reacting to what the International Court of Justice has ruled as a plausible genocide. From school trips to watch starving Palestinian children, to night boat tours admiring the destruction, to physically blocking humanitarian aid so more children starve—this is not just complicity; this is active participation.

And that raises a dark moral question: Who is more evil—the Israeli government committing genocide, or the Israeli society enabling it?

Before we wrap up, we also answer a historical question: Which American president had the courage to tell Israel it was committing a holocaust? The answer might surprise you.

Why is Germany so prevalent on Lemmy?

Comparatively to the rest of the internet, it seems like there are a lot more Germans here. I’ve always assumed it was just because I was on a German instance and was in a sort of echo chamber (join feddit.org btw 🥳), but I just checked Fediverse Observer and it’s the 2nd largest country by users. Additionally, the German instances seem to be the biggest non-English ones.

Why is this?

in reply to sbf

Mastodon was made by a german. I think that made the concept of the fediverse popular to germans.
in reply to sbf

Germany has always been a big hub for Free software as a whole, for alternative communications, etc. The CCC's presence is a big factor.
in reply to wildbus8979

Also Germany has one of the largest populations in europe, and they tend to speak English very well unlike France/Italy/Spain.

If Lemmy is mainly made of western countries with high proportions of anglophone speakers, the prevalence of German speakers isn't really a suprise,

in reply to bleistift2

At least there are other sites with the specs
EDIT: Can't find the temperatures on other sites, try looking at CPU-Z or CPU-X if you are on Linux
