This whole situation is best summed up by this. If they were putting this much effort into fighting for the actual working class issues they would have won the previous election... Make of that what you will.

I mean I used to mod that subreddit until the blackouts, I helped popularise the fuck cars movement

Neat! Got any tips?

in reply to grue

Not sure this is helpful, but:

My main issue with the reddit fuckcars is that there was wayyy to much like low quality complaining posts that got big but no one was posting the statistics and academic side of things which I think is just as interesting and convincing. So I did a couple things to try and encourage more people to post that.

On the other hand, that doesn’t seem to be a problem on lemmy, since we’re all nerds…

In my political activism and messaging though, what I did realise was it was helpful to be more vocal about accessibility for disabled people. The disabled people I talked to kind of felt like pawns in the “car debate”.
Like the pro-cars people woulf use disabled people as an argument to keep cars but offer no alternative to disabled people who can’t drive. While fuck-cars allies often use disabled people who can’t drive as an argument but fail to properly fight for accessibility in urbanism. (Like seem to idealise european planning which if often terrible for disabled people — lots of stairs without ramps, many trams/trains arent wheelchair accessible, disabled people who can only move by car fail to access things on pedestrianised streets because there is no disability exception/parking nearby.)

Anyways. I found I was able to get quite a bit of a following of people who typically don’t like the fuck cars movement on microblogging platforms by being fuck cars, without alienating an entire demographic of people by not considering their needs seriously.

Hasan Piker Just Gave His Millions Of Followers A Masterclass In What Not To Do When Detained By CBP

Progressive streamer Hasan Piker’s recent detention by CBP at the Chicago airport has generated widespread outrage — and rightfully so. No US citizen should be interrogated about their political beliefs when re-entering their own country. But while CBP’s behavior was egregious, Piker’s response was potentially even more dangerous: he chose to engage in a two-hour conversation with federal agents without a lawyer present, streaming about it afterward as if this were just more content for his millions of followers.

For many years, we’ve called out this kind of bullshit interrogation technique of citizens at the border (it didn’t start with Trump, though it’s almost certainly gotten worse with him in power).

Rather than following the basic rule of only showing his passport, answering the most basic travel-related questions and requesting a lawyer if they asked further questions, Piker chose to engage in an extended dialogue with CBP officials about his political views, beliefs about Hamas, and even past Twitch bans. He turned what should have just been a clear story of an unfortunately common constitutional violation into potential legal ammunition against himself. As Taylor Lorenz reported:

He was detained in Chicago and questioned for two hours about protected journalistic activities like who he’s interviewed and his political beliefs. He was asked whether or not he’d interviewed Hamas, Houthis, or Hezbollah members. He was questioned about his opinions on Trump and Israel and asked about his history of bans on Twitch. His phone and laptop were not confiscated.

“They straight up tried to get something out of me that I think they could use to basically detain me permanently,” Piker following the incident. “… [the agent] kept saying stuff like, do you like Hamas? Do you support Hamas? Do you think Hamas is a terror group or a resistance group?”

“I kept repeating the same statement over and over again,” Piker said. “I kept saying… I’m on the side of civilians. I want the endless bloodshed to end. I am a pacifist. I want wars to end… which is insane because up until this moment. If you were to say as an American citizen, you stand 10 toes down with Hamas, or you stand 10 toes down with the Houthis, they can’t deny you entry into the country for that shit.”

His post-detention stream reveals just how badly he misunderstands the danger he put himself in. Despite claiming he “kept repeating the same statement,” he eagerly recounts engaging in detailed discussions about his past statements on 9/11 and getting excited when a CBP official supposedly “agreed with the blowback sentiment.” This isn’t protecting your rights — it’s giving federal agents hours of statements that could be twisted, misquoted, or used to trap you in inconsistencies later. Even a single misremembered detail could become grounds for a false statements charge.

Throughout his stream, Piker frames this as a battle of wills — bragging about being a “stubborn piece of shit” who wouldn’t be intimidated. But he fundamentally misunderstands the game being played. While intimidation may be a useful side effect for CBP, their primary goal in these extended interviews isn’t to scare you — it’s to get you talking. The more you talk, the more likely you are to say something they can use. And here’s the crucial part that Piker missed: they don’t need you to admit to a crime. They just need you to say something — anything — that they can later claim was false. Just ask Martha Stewart, who went to prison not for insider trading, but for lying about a stock sale to investigators.

Piker’s response to viewers questioning his judgment reveals just how deeply his influencer mindset clouds his legal judgment:

I know that under normal circumstances, I’m supposed to say I want a lawyer. I don’t want to talk to you, but this… nothing I’m doing is illegal.

And I also wanted to see what would happen. Do you understand? I wanted to see what would happen. I wanted to actually see this experience, which is why instead of immediately fucking lawyering up, I was like, “No, I’m going to I’m going to entertain this. I’m going to see what they actually are trying to get out of this.”

And I’m glad I did this because the reality of the matter is one, I’m profoundly privileged. Okay, remember I’m a public person and also I have enough money to to be able to fight back against this sort of thing and they know who the fuck I am. So obviously the reason for why they’re doing that is I think to try to create an an environment of fear to try to get people like myself or at least like others that would be in my shoes that don’t have that same level of security to shut the fuck up. And for me, I’m going to use the privilege that I have in that moment to try and see what the fuck they’re doing. Okay?

This response perfectly encapsulates the dangerous intersection of influencer culture and law enforcement encounters. Piker treats this like content creation — an opportunity to “see what would happen” and generate an interesting story. But federal agents aren’t content collaborators. They’re trained investigators who excel at getting people to inadvertently incriminate themselves through casual conversation. His “privilege” of being a public figure with money doesn’t protect him — it makes him a more valuable target.

He totally misunderstands the shit he’s in here. Yes, part of this is intimidation and trying to get him to shut up when talking publicly, but while they have detained him they want him to talk away because that’s how he fucks himself. You are bound to say something at some point that can be used against you. Even if you’re positive you haven’t.

If you think this sounds paranoid, just watch by law professor James Duane explaining why you should never talk to law enforcement without a lawyer present. The lecture is followed by 20 minutes of a police officer basically confirming everything Duane says and emphasizing that you should never, ever talk to law enforcement without a lawyer, and explaining how he (and other cops) are great at convincing you to talk against your best interest:

There’s a lot in there, but he explains why you should never talk to law enforcement without a lawyer even if you’re innocent, you only tell the truth, don’t reveal anything incriminating, and the entire interview is taped. Because even then what you say can be used against you in ways you don’t expect. And, as he notes, what you say can never be used in your favor in such circumstances.

Or, to put it in shorter, more direct terms, listen to the late great pioneering civil rights lawyer Bill Goodman and his longtime law partner Denise Heberle in the PSA they put together four or five years ago for the National Lawyers Guild telling people to shut up when talking to law enforcement.

Also, if you’re re-entering the country, make sure you know what your actual rights are.

Piker and his supporters have offered up multiple defenses of his decision to talk, each more dangerous than the last:

First, they insist it “worked” because CBP eventually let him go. This fundamentally misunderstands how these encounters work. They were always going to let him in — he’s a US citizen. Requesting a lawyer would have “worked” too. He would still have been let in. The risk isn’t in the moment, it’s in how those two hours of statements might be used against him later. He might have told a little white lie that will come back to haunt him. He may have made a slight exaggeration. He might have said something that could be twisted and misrepresented in court. There are many reasons that he has put himself in totally unnecessary risk.

Second, they argue he got more attention for the incident by engaging. But he could have generated the same outrage by simply describing CBP’s unconstitutional detention and questioning after asserting his rights. The story isn’t improved by putting himself at legal risk.

Third, his supporters argue that since “CBP doesn’t care about due process anyway,” asserting your rights is pointless. This is exactly backwards. When facing authorities who might violate your rights, you don’t voluntarily surrender them — you assert them clearly and create a record of doing so. Voluntarily waiving your rights because they “might not respect them anyway” is handing them the win for no goddam reason.

Finally, there’s the “journalist generating content” defense — perhaps the most dangerous rationalization of all. This perfectly captures how influencer-brain can lead people to catastrophically misread serious situations. When being questioned by federal agents, you’re not a journalist gathering material. You’re not creating content. You’re potential prey facing trained predators whose entire job is getting you to say something — anything — they can use against you later.

Perhaps most disturbing is watching his supporters argue that he’s “experienced at this” because he handles hostile Twitch chat trolls daily. This dangerous false equivalence perfectly illustrates how influencer culture can lead people to fatally misunderstand encounters with state power. Managing online trolls requires an entirely different skillset from protecting your rights during law enforcement questioning. One is about engagement; the other is about knowing when to stay silent.

This matters far beyond Piker’s individual case. With his massive platform, he’s teaching millions of followers exactly the wrong lesson about dealing with law enforcement — that if you’re clever enough, privileged enough, or “experienced” enough at handling conflict, you can somehow talk your way through it. This is exactly the kind of thinking that leads people to waive their rights and incriminate themselves.

Yes, CBP’s treatment of Piker was shameful and unconstitutional. It deserves fierce condemnation. But by turning a serious civil rights violation into influencer content, Piker didn’t just put himself at risk — he helped normalize the very kind of police overreach he claims to oppose.

Dà potere all'utente.

Reddit taking down multiple of my piracy related posts

I posted an updated guide on r/Adobe Zii a bit ago. It got taken down last week and I re-posted it here: lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/43935446 Super grateful that this community exists. I posted to r/Adobe Zii that my guide was taken down and warning that it looks like reddit is cracking down on piracy (I am guessing an Adobe spokesperson is abusing reddit's copyright reporting system). Now today reddit emails me saying that I received another copyright warning for posting that my other post was removed: reddit.com/r/AdobeZii/comments…

I decide hey lets try and appeal as there was not any copyrighted material in my post about my guide being removed. Turns out they want my full name, address, and other identifying info to send to the copyright complainant. Not doing that.

Just disappointed as I've actively used reddit for years and love all the communities on this place. Seems like its slowly going down hill. Guess I should have seen that coming with the whole API shenanigans last year.

TL;DR reddit sucks and it does not appear any way to appeal without giving Adobe my info

An Updated Guide for Adobe Zii

I am the author of An Updated Guide for Adobe Zii in 2024. Earlier this morning I received a copyright warning from Reddit and my guide was taken down. Seeing as this is the new home for piracy discussions I thought I'd post it here and update it based on user feedback.

Copy of original post: web.archive.org/web/2024080304…

Goals

I have parsed through r/Adobe Zii for a bit and this is how I installed the adobe 2021 version of the creative cloud on my pc. A couple requirements for my method were:

 1. I needed to be able to install without root privileges or be in an isolated environment when root is required. I think its fair to say that the TNT group is a reputable source, but its always better to be safe. I have used their software before and never had issues. The risk comes from the distributor as most of these hacks are posted on private forums.
 2. The actual software needs to come from adobe. This eliminates the risk of malware being injected by a third party.
 3. I'd like to run the latest version of Adobe CC in case I get access to a legitimate copy of a program.

FAQ

Why not just download the latest versions (2024) of adobe on cmacked or torrentmac?

A couple things, firstly, they are from a new developer (Monster Group) without an established reputation. They could be perfectly safe, but I just didn't want to risk it. Secondly, I'd rather get an actual download from adobe and modify that. This is similar to the method of GenP on windows. In fact there you can run sandboxie and see exactly what files are changed.

Why not use anti CC for the 2022 version of adobe?

I may be wrong, but it seems anti CC needs root permissions to run. Further, I would rather just use the actual creative cloud application. I used to pay for CC but as a broke student, I just cannot afford it when all I use is after effects. It's so dumb how they make it so expensive to sub to just a single app.

Do I need to use a VM to install Adobe Zii?

No you do not. The main benefit is getting a playground to test versions in and also avoid running cracks on your main system.

I am getting a JSON error?

This means your version of Adobe CC updated in the background. In order for this to work you must use 5.7.0 (or 5.9.0) version of Adobe CC. It does this fairly fast before you can disable autoupdates sometimes. It can be helpful to turn of wifi temporily so you can disable the autoupdates. See github.com/Drovosek01/adobe-pa… for more information.

Will this work on Apple silicon?

It should in theory. I have received feedback of people getting it to work. I developed this guide using an intel based macbook pro. Make sure in step 2 you download the version of Adobe CC for intel or arm based on your system.

Method

After a bunch of research, this is my method.

 1. Install macOS in a VM. I'd recommend using the free trial of Parallels. Once installed select install macOS from recovery partition. Select free trial and proceed with macOS installation. This will take a while. (I recommend a VM because you will need to install an old version of adobe CC during the install to get this to work)
 2. The next step is to install CC on the vm. Download version 5.7.0 linked below and immediately turn off keep Adobe CC up to date. If you fail to prevent it from updating, you will get a JSON error later (see here for more info). Install the newest version of Adobe CC on your host and sign in using the same account. Do not enable adobe genuine verification thing. It will see you're pirating the apps and block you.

INTEL: ccmdl.adobe.com/AdobeProducts/…
ARM: ccmdl.adobe.com/AdobeProducts/…

 1. Then download whatever version of the apps you need with github.com/Drovosek01/adobe-pa… There are instructions in the repo on how to do this. (Note: at the step where you say which XML version you want, enter V4).
 2. Download Adobe Zii v6.1.7 from appnee dot com.
 3. At this point, because we're in a VM, root permissions isn't really a concern so you can just run the patch. But, if you'd rather not, here's how you can do it: reddit.com/r/AdobeZii/comments…
 4. Copy each adobe application from your virtual machine to your host Application folder.
 5. Create a firewall rule to block all traffic to and from the application. I used little snitch but you can also use lulu.
 6. Enjoy your 100% free version of adobe. Happy sailing!

Tips

It can take a while to find which version of Adobe Zii will actually work with which version of the adobe product you're interested in. This is the beauty of a VM is you can muck around with minimal consequence. It also means you can keep the VM around to test new versions, if it works, then copy over to host. I've heard of others installing macos on a separate drive and then booting that instead for higher performance.

A word of warning. Only install Adobe Zii from a reputable source. I did some digging and for some of the other downloads, the file is no longer signed meaning it has been potentially modified.

Note: I have successfully tested this on Lightroom classic 10.3. For After Effects, I found that Adobe Zii 5.3.2 worked with After Effects 17.5. I suspect this is not an issue with Adobe Zii, but rather in my initial tests I messed up some file permissions.

Was ist arXiv?

„The arXiv mirror network served a role – acting as a backup for the corpus, allowing some degree of load distribution, and providing improved access for users who were geographically closer to a mirror – that is no longer necessary. arXiv now has multiple backups for the arXiv corpus in place, and the Fastly CDN (Content Delivery Network) that we use to deliver content provides excellent service throughout the world.“

Qwen3 Technical Report

Newark airport had three air traffic controllers on duty instead of 14

In a statement, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it “briefly slowed aircraft in and out of the airport while we ensured redundancies were working as designed.

“Operations have returned to normal.’’

That came after Duffy announced plans to reduce the number of flights arriving and departing from Newark for the “next several weeks” and would meet with the airport’s major carriers to discuss the issues. Flight reductions, he said, would target the hours when international flights arrive.

Duffy said he wanted to raise the mandatory retirement age for air traffic controllers from 56 to 61, to help offset a shortage of about 3,000 air traffic controllers. After the first Newark failure, on 28 April, the union representing air traffic controllers said several members were placed on trauma leave.

“While we cannot quickly replace them due to this highly specialized profession, we continue to train controllers who will eventually be assigned to this busy airspace,” the FAA said earlier in May.

Automatic category/community assignment on received object

I'm wondering how content on threadiverse is automatically assigned its community when received by the software (e.g. PieFed, Lemmy, Mbin). The answer I am expecting is "if the community is addressed (
to
,
cc
,
audience[/cod

I'm wondering how content on threadiverse is automatically assigned its community when received by the software (e.g. PieFed, Lemmy, Mbin).

The answer I am expecting is "if the community is addressed (to, cc, audience), then it is slotted into that community".

However that causes issues for compatibility with microblogs... for example, silverpill@mitra.social recently authored a post that mentioned [swf@socialwebfoundation.org](https://community.nodebb.org/category/swf@socialwebfoundation.org) and it got slotted into that community on NodeBB, which isn't correct since that group is private.

Better practice would be to only trust the addressed community if it is Announce'd by the community directly, but would fall short if my instance does not receive the Announce (say, if nobody follows the community), in which case we'd fall back to "uncategorized", which is where all microblog posts currently go. Then it's neither correct nor incorrect, I suppose.

I think this might be an issue where NodeBB tries to be too many things at once (microblog and threadiverse compatible).

Does NodeBB support creating new topics by mentioning a group/category?

I wonder how context should be assigned in this case.

Re: Automatic category/community assignment on received object

silverpill@mitra.social yes, it should. Mentioning the category means it will be addressed and NodeBB will slot the received content in the first group object it finds.
in reply to julian

If I create a topic this way, I will be the owner of the context collection. But if the conversation is to be moderated, it should be owned by the group.

Am I correct?

(there is a parallel discussion happening at codeberg.org/streams/streams/i…)

Re: Automatic category/community assignment on received object

I suppose you're right in a way. The context owner is not supposed to be set by someone other than the context owner. It's a fallback mechanism intended for better compatibility with Mastodon.

When a group is addressed and it is one of the local NodeBB categories, it will assume control

If it is another group that it knows about but isn't same origin to the author, then no category is assumed.

How it works between forums, e.g. between Discourse and NodeBB?
Can a Discourse user create a topic in NodeBB category?
Who creates/owns the context collection in this case?
in reply to julian

Is there or should there be a distinction between the original and the mirrors?

We have a conversation owner at the thread level (which is either the forum, subforum, forum category, or person who created the top level post, depending on the software). They determine the official moderated version of the thread since they can remove comments (although mirrors don't have to honor that).

If we show that conversation on another server, technically that is a mirror of that thread, especially if you are throwing it in a category or displaying it under a hashtag.

Should we be indicating that a particular thread was started on a particular forum (or category within a forum)? Should we be honoring the moderated version of the conversation from the original thread?

The concept of mirroring threads across platforms is great for participation and censorship resistance, but it does make it unclear about who owns the thread from a moderation perspective.

They all kind of look like dickheads ngl. Like that annoying kid who always breaks boundaries.

(ie. they all look very full of themselves — I guess that’s how you become a leader…)

Lemmy.one will be shutting down

This post serves as notice that Lemmy.one will be shutting down in 90 days.

Unfortunately, the moderation features in Lemmy never progressed to the point required to continue maintaining this service, and Lemmy simply does not have the userbase to justify the cost of this service. Myself and the moderation team apologize for the inconvenience this will cause.
