Why don't most distros support listing packages and system settings in text file(s)?
I think the least that distros can do, is allow listing all packages and system settings in config files like .toml rather than having to type in every single package to install, or click through system setting GUIs to setup. Would that require using a whole programming language or system like NIx?
While NixOS works much differently from most distros, that's the only reason I use it: package and system settings in text files. If I fix something, it's fixed permanently, I don't need to hunt down files in random directories if I want to change a setting. If I ever need to reinstall the OS I don't have to write dnf install every single damn package and manually setup all that up all over again. Having daily-drove Windows macOS & Fedora as throughout the years, my setups have felt hacky as well as houses of cards as I've wanted or had to set them up again (I don't mean Fedora specifically, but distros in general).
Basically it feels insane that it's the way most linux users and servers in the world operate. If I, a humble computer hobbyist can figure out Nix, why don't more users do so, and why is Nix so niche?

I'm sure many people don't even think about that. Having to reinstall all your packages from scratch is not something they do frequently.
And for the people who are looking to optimize the initial setup, there are many ways to do it without a declarative package manager. You can:
- Write a script for your initial setup that includes installing packages
- Use a tool like ansible
- Use meta-packages
- Export your currently installed packages to a file and pass that to the package manager on the new installation
I'd have to also back up /etc/apt/preferences.d
Much easier to just copy and paste a block of commands when I get a VPS up

Linux won't boot, looking for help
Hey there. I’m totally new to Linux. I’m not the most tech savvy, but I’m fed up with windows and want to go elsewhere. For the time being I figured I’d dual boot, and got everything set up on a usb. I plugged it in, booted up Linux Mint, and it worked smoothly. I ended the session, powered off my pc, removed the usb, booted up windows 11, freed up some disc space and did some other stuff on my computer, then turned it off for a bit. When I went to boot it up again, I got this message:

Something has gone seriously wrong: import mok-state() failed: Not Foundand then the computer powered off. I tried disabling fast start or whatever it’s called, as well as secure boot, and it’s still giving me that. Windows still boots up just fine. Does anyone have any advice? Like I said I don’t have much technical knowledge so a dumbed down response would be really appreciated. I’ve looked up a few forums and nothing gave me much.
Oh also, when I try to boot it and it gives me the error and turns off, if I turn it back on but boot up windows, I get a message saying something was blocked due to a security system I have to disable, but doesn’t tell me what that security system is or how to disable it. It’s getting a little frustrating. I don’t know why it worked once but not anymore.

When you freed up the disk space windows seems to have broken mints bootloader partition. You could fix it if you wanted, but at beginner level its probably best to reinstall. If you need to recover any data from you "broken" mint partition you can plug the mint USB in, boot into the live environment and look in your files mount you old mint files and backup anything you want to keep before reinstalling.
Depends on how much of a nerd you are. If the idea of rescuing your system using the terminal sounds fun then try otherwise just reinstall.

Gaza has become worse than hell on earth, the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross has told the BBC.
In an interview at the ICRC's headquarters in Geneva, the organisation's president Mirjana Spoljaric said "humanity is failing" as it watched the horrors of the Gaza war.

In Denmark, we like to think of ourselves as being in the vanguard of freedom of expression. We were the first country in the world to legalise pornography. We insisted on the right to publish caricatures of the prophet Muhammad. Rather than marginalise so-called rightwing populists in parliament, we invited them in to political cooperation. We pride ourselves on being unafraid of controversy and we’re good at making authorities who try to tell us what to do – and especially what not to do – look ridiculous.
Danes also like to think of our country as a role model for democracy. As such, the national elections for children aged 13 to 16 are a cherished tradition, considered a part of civic education and a preparation for democratic participation. All schools are invited to take part in the exercise, which is held every other year. Students debate 20 issues for three weeks before casting votes for the parties that are also eligible to stand in real general elections.
Over the past few weeks, however, the national school elections have been dragged into controversy after the decision to ban one theme from the list of issues for the 2026 vote: the question of Palestine.
Should Denmark recognise Palestine as a sovereign state? This specific question is arguably a defining issue of our time and one that mobilises political engagement among young voters. Excluding it is a remarkable act, which has been attacked from the left and right of the political spectrum. This is the opposite of properly preparing young people for Danish democracy, critics say, and goes against what we as a nation stand for.

Yeah, might as well stop talking about Colonialism, Slavery, Nazism and all the other topics in history, that are "too complex to relate" by the idea of interested groups.
Also the notion behind it is even more infuriating. Because saying the issue would be "too complex" means there is some higher justification to crimes against humanity and war crimes, killing tens of thousands of people and making the home of millions of people unlivable while massacring them as they scramble for the little food you give them. "Too complex" means that any crime and any injustice can be justified and when you see injustice you should not challenge it, but rather trust blindly that your leaders can justify what they do.

Speculatively, but it would assume prior research, which many people simply won’t do. If a de-facto app (say Voyager on iOS) offers a default option that’s unavailable for a selection of its potential users, it’s another hurdle within onboarding that is already the biggest barrier to entry. If we want to grow as a platform (more users equals more content), putting up a default wall saying “your kind aren’t welcome” to entire countries seems obtuse.
Yes, those potential new UK users can get around it by picking another instance, but the question is how many will give up if they can’t get over the first hurdle.
The suggestion of changing the default instance by region, where those instances prohibit specific regions seems logical enough to me.
