I’m accidentally becoming a #FediMerch guy.

Shiny stickers

Last year, I wrote a blog post, Fediverse for Freedom – which was about the importance of a free and open Fediverse, and how and why public institutions can support it. Since then, I’ve referred to this blog post in many of my talks and in conversations, and started to use the hashtag #FediverseForFreedom.

Ahead of FOSDEM back in February, I created some stickers to share – a Fediverse logo, overlaid with the text “I Am Part Of The Rebel Alliance #FediverseForFreedom”. They were quite a hit at the time, and since then I’ve used the same image in presentations. When people have seen them, I’ve quite often been asked where they came from.

Last week, Elena Rossini – writer of the fantastic The Future is Federated blog/newsletter, talented filmmaker and photographer, and (perhaps) the Fediverse’s Number One Fan – released a great, four minute video that both explains and promotes the Fediverse and open platforms not owned by billionaires¹

One of the stickers shows up in several shots of the the video, and once again, I heard that people would like to be able to get some for themselves.

A simple site

I’ve been wanting to make the stickers available for a while, but the release of the video finally pushed me into getting this done!

I’d recently bought some stickers myself, from the talented Robb Knight, and he mentioned that he used Stripe Payment Links for his site. I already had a Stripe account, so thought I’d try the same thing.

So: now you can visit fediverseforfreedom.org (.com points to .org), and click on a link to to get a handful of stickers shipped in your direction! You can also easily just tell your friends, “oh yeah, I got them from Fediverse For Freedom dot org”. Nice and straightforward.

There’s a bit more information about it all on that simple site, but I thought it might be interesting to write down a bit more about how I made it.

The site is running on Codeberg Pages. Previously I’ve put these kinds of one-off, single page sites up on GitHub Pages, or on Glitch. I’m feeling increasingly less comfortable about having all of my stuff on GitHub and hosted in the US; and, unfortunately, Glitch is going away soon (more on this in a future post). So in this case I chose Codeberg Pages, although I’m aware that they are themselves a platform that is currently in maintenance mode. I’m open to suggestions for similar sites, as I’ll need to migrate some Glitch apps somewhere very soon!

Apart from that: the whole operation is very low tech. Stripe Payment Links are convenient – Stripe itself can handle a huge variety of payment types – but, on the backend… it does not do much. No order acknowledgement emails, order management tools, or anything like that. All I get is a basic dashboard with information about the orders. I whipped up some simple Python that uses the Stripe API to grab the postal addresses of orders, and then creates SVG address labels for printing. The same code also grabs the email addresses so that I can send an email thanking the customer for the order.

In terms of shipping, that’s also a manual process – no “drop-shipping” here, I’m getting the stickers from my regular supplier (StickerApp), putting them in envelopes, and posting them out myself. That also means that delivery times will vary – although I had enough in stock to cover all of the initial orders, I’ve also been in Amsterdam for the past 3 days, so the first batch will go out on Monday.

One more thing I’m experimenting with here is GoatCounter, just to get a sense of traffic and interest. I didn’t want to put a load of invasive Google Analytics onto such a basic page, and I’ve had GoatCounter recommended to me a few times now – like Mastodon, it has also benefited from NLNet funding from the European Union in the past, and I wanted to see what was possible. It seems to do just what I wanted, whilst also being unintrusive.

What’s next?

Look… I don’t intend to become some kind of merch magnate, but I do know that some people share my own desire to display our commitment to the Fediverse and related causes, and if I can help folks to do so, then I will (did you know we already made a t-shirt? Elena has asked me for more in the same vein!).

How can we combine two audio recording inputs (mics) into one audio input source in Manjaro?

My partner and I are running Manjaro and very new to it. Trying to switch as much as possible over to daily use with Manjaro.
We have pipewire, not pulseaudio

We record multiple times a week on OBS, and my partner and I are in the same room. We have two mics side by side both inputs going into my PC. Linux, and therefore OBS, are recognizing the two mic inputs separately as you might expect.

OBS can set up both of these separate inputs, but the issue is we're having significant problems with echo and the noise suppression/noise gates are not sufficient.

This was not an issue on windows, where we used Voicemeeter to combine our inputs into one mic for OBS. I am looking to emulate that on Linux to see if it solves our problems.

We have tried a mic merge sink, but it creates an OUTPUT device, not an input device.

SOLUTION:
QPWGraph was the answer (or something like it, Helvum was also recommended) While it looks intimidating at first you just need to understand it's a series of outputs and inputs and you play mix and match. This allowed us to take the outputs of the mics and connect them directly to a single OBS mic source. This 100% did all that Voicemeeter was doing for us, and the results were also the same.

We do not experience echo, overlap, feedback, or any of the issues we were having by adding the two mics separately in OBS. Our issue was NOT the setup, as some people focused on here. As soon as we got the mics going into that same input, all was good and we successfully ran a recording session 100% in Manjaro.

In the end, this did everything we wanted from Voicemeeter + MORE, as I can now isolate different outputs as well. So for instance in recordings I can manage the volume of discord and the background music separately. So this was an amazing solution and the result was exactly what was needed, and ultimately was much easier than Voicemeeter.

It sounds like your issue is that each microphone is picking up the other person's voice. If your software is insufficient to handle this, I'd move or change the microphones.

I can think of some commercial audio processors that can help with that, but they are super pricey.

I can't think of a linux application that has this capability. If there is something out there that offers AEC (acoustic echo cancellation) on linux with two mic inputs, id also be interested.

One way to help with this as far as inexpensive hardware is to make sure you're using cardioid dynamic microphones, and not omnidirectional condenser microphones. Cardioid dynamic mics generally pick up audio directionally, like from the "front". You have to be right up on the mic in order to have it record any type of audio. They generally wont pick up environmental sound from anything more than a few feet away. You can just point them away from noise you don't want to pick up.

We have a setup that works fine with Windows, so I refuse accept that we cannot make it work the same way with Linux. I feel like a lot of people here are not focusing on the main questions we had about how we can achieve a goal.

We figured out how to merge the mic inputs into a single sink, but it's an output. We used this post to achieve it. This helps us, and works for Discord. On Discord the echo is not a problem, but it's using the built in Krisp to do noise suppression, so that might be part of it.

On Windows, as described in OP, we used VoiceMeteer to combine the inputs. It's possible this was achieving some kind of noise suppression too, but I don't see how or why that would be the case. Either way, in Windows, there is no echo problem. We use the same exact setup to be on Discord and record our inputs through OBS without any echo.

You're right, that would help. I am not 100% sure that it was not applying some kind of echo/noise filtering. If you're aware of any software that can do this on linux, we will try that.

No this is not our issue, but thanks for the responses.

We have excellent mics and set up, and we run this set up for years just fine on windows. So all the assistance I am looking for is how to combine our inputs into one on Manjaro.

A software solution is fine for us. We cannot change mic arrangement any more than it already is due to physical restraints in room. The mics are faced away from each other. They are good quality XLR mics and run through a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2.

We play TTRPGs online via Discord and FoundryVTT, and record the sessions. We use OBS to capture webcams on Discord, the virutal tabletop, desktop audio for other people's voices/music from the vtt, and mic audio for our voices.

On Windows, we used Voicemeteer to combine our mics. We could use this resulting combination for both OBS and Discord. Since we cannot find similar software so far for linux, we came across the solution I linked above. It works for getting our mics to be combined into one for Discord, but doesn't show up as an input in OBS. We cannot get OBS to "listen to" the combined sink output.

So, instead, we just set them up as two different mics in OBS. This would be fine, except the recording as the echo problem. Over Discord, I assume because it's getting Krisp noise suppression applied, there is no echo. But after listening to the OBS recording, there is echo. So, a software solution to noise/echo suppress might be what we need as well, but that's why we're asking for help.

Y’all need carpet on the floors, maybe something on the walls, and to be facing each other from across the table with cardiod mics.

The room is not professionally treated for sound, but we do have one wall (behind the mics) 90% covered with 2" sound dampening foam. Lots of stuff on the other walls, rugs, etc. It is not a bare-bones room. Our mics are good quality cardioid mics and while our setups are not 180° back-to-back, the mics point away from each other when in use. I don’t know if I can explain well enough with words, but we sit side-by-side with the mics between us on arms. They swing down between us, stretch out towards us, and point away from each other. They are about 1.5 to 2 feet apart from each other, pointed away, when in use.

Never done anything with 2 mics, so I'll just throw a vague suggestion: there's Helvum to combine the mic inputs and then Easy Effects that can apply a few noise suppression filters that can do world of a difference, maybe the first isn't even necessary, while the second is the core and can be tweaked a lot

We bypass the issue. We use DJI mini mics, which allow you to connect multiple mics to a single base receiver, and that receiver appears as a stereo sound source.

I've just created an OBS audio capture device, then opened qpwgraph and put both mic's into it.

It should do what you want, but I am not sure that will fix the problem. Give it a shot and let us know.

I definitely recommend playing around with easyeffects a bit more as well.

Try using audacity/tenacity with each mic on one stereo channel, press recording and like the output to OBS.

2025 Medina Juneteenth Celebration

Medina held their fourth annual Juneteenth celebration at the town square today. I was able to check out some of it, even with the wet weather. It was the Sanyuka Children’s Choir from Uganda who impressed me the most with their energy and dancing. Kenny Crumpton from Fox 8’s Kickin’ It With Kenny and Danita Harris from WKYC Channel 3 were also featured guest speakers at the event.

I recently setup my own NetBSD server to learn more about selfhosting and Unix. I am sharing it with anyone who also want to learn about command line and server stuff and will be also providing mentorship ( not an expert but know enough to at least teach begginers).

stuff I can teach using that server:
- basic command line
- how to host stuff like static HTML pages
- ssh concepts
- hosting http alternative like Gemini, Gopher etc
- scripting in Bash, Python etc

Leaving lemmy[.]ml

Just wanted to make others aware that the main admin of lemmy[.]ml and lead developer of the lemmy open source project, Dessalines, actively spreads disinformation and suppresses anyone he disagrees with - see this post [1].

Granted lemmy[.]ml is his platform, but that doesn't mean we have to support or continue building community here. My advice is to join existing communities on other servers and unsubscribe from anything on lemmy[.]ml and block the instance. Stop giving power to those who seem to support Putin/Russia [2] [3] and spread misinformation.

I mean it seems like you do not understand the rule that keeps getting cited, the reason russian gets removed when used as an insult is often times it is used in a racist or atleast racist adjacent way, and so the way .ml has decided to deal with that is that it just, isnt an insult, that is not that you can never critisize the russian federation ever, but you cannot use russian as an insult, because agian it is often used racistly or atleast racist adjacent.

Edit: If you would like proof I am more than happy if asked to levy a critisism of the Russian Federation and then you can report it and we will see if it gets taken down

Graphene OS Situation

I know the generall guidance for private phones was Pixel with graphene OS. I was financially planing on buying a 10th gen pixel when they come out later this year to only put gos on it.
However with the recent news, I am wondering if this is still the recommended best practice from this community.

I am worried that if the gos team needs to spend tonnes of ressources on maintaining basic drivers and stuff then they won't have any time to work on the privacy and security features they are best known for.

What is your oppinion?

Also does anyone have a way to dpam feedback to google? I couldn't finf a generall feedback form, but if they know that people aren't buying their hardware because of this decision, they might back down. (I really fell in love with gos researching it lately so I would hate to have to switch to something like /e/ os or calyx or something)

Looks like you'll to need to wait and see what the GrapheneOS team will recommend until they come out with their own phone. Maybe Pinephone for now? Or older Pixel, perhaps.

See if the Graphene team supports the 10 when it comes out. If it does then get that and if they don't then get the Pixel 9 at a discounted cost and put on GOS. Then wait and see what happens with the situation.

Calyx is okay but MicroG doesn't work nearly as well as GOS sandboxed GPlay. eOS tends to be multiple Android versions outdated. I'd go with GOS, Calyx, Lineage, then eOS.

What's the pragmatic consequence of that? Are the security risk actually that great because Android architecture isn't that secure or rather isn't there a smaller and smaller amount of hard to execute exploit anyway that yes being up to date is always more secure yet only marginally so?

I'm asking because I worry that always playing faster catch up with Google leave them in charge.

Yeah I would also like a crystal ball here. I am somewhat interested in the 10 if I can run GrapheneOS. Otherwise I'm going to explore other custom ROMs with broader device support.

The second best option is LineageOS, so purchasing a Pixel is still hedging that bet.

Just bought a 9 for Graphene. Up and running - works like a charm. Devs are not announcing end of the line for Graphene development- they are making daily updates on their way to bringing out Android 16. At this point I'd grab a 9 rather than wait for the 10. Get yourself up and running before Google tries to lock us out of more apps - right now everything I need runs fine without any play services whatsoever. The OS is solid, Vanadium is really good - I could go on and on. If you are onboard and interested in the project its 100% worth it from where I sit.

In the GrapheneOS development room there’s a lot of talk about finding an OEM to get security partner status from and/or to design a grapheneos specific device. I saw they were tentatively chatting to the CEO of Mecha (currently crowdfunding for a Linux handheld called the comet) as well as another anonymous Android OEM lead. So I’d say be patient, wait and see. I’m confident the project will continue, hopefully with full support for pixels via a partnership but potentially on their own hardware.

Wondering the same. I've been hoping to hold off on a new Pixel until the new EU battery laws take effect (also, where the hell is concept art for a new generation of user-serviceable batteries?).

You know those factories that pump out iPhone clones? Honestly, I'd love to get whoever runs one of those hooked on GrapheneOS. It's damn impressive how they can set up the tooling, clone the iOS UI, and sell it all for cheap within a couple of months. And without the kickback Google gives for pre-installing Google Play or whatever. Imagine that effort being put towards a phone just for GrapheneOS.

Admittedly, someone who makes iPhone clones is probably not someone who thinks about security much, but my point is, I really wish someone stepped up to produce phones with first-class support for GrapheneOS.

More realistically, I'm banking on the passion of the folks at GrapheneOS. Should Google pull the plug one day, I'm hopeful the GOS team can recommend a plan of action until a more GOS-friendly device shows up. Worst case scenario, I'll keep my Pixel with GOS kicking around and have a separate device with regular Android. It'll be just for the apps that demand spying, shut off at night, and I'll minimize travelling with it.

Bought /e/OS running CMF murena.com/shop/smartphones/br… few months ago, no frill, no tinkering, just works. Daily driver since I received it.

I do have more... specific phones, e.g. PinePhone and PinePhone Pro, but I never managed to use they as daily drivers.

That said, I'm only sharing this because it is "good enough" for me but you probably have different concerns than me. I'm not a political dissident, not a journalist, not a security researcher, just a random dude living in Western Europe.

I tend to find that identifying precisely what your threat model is facilitate pinpointing pragmatic options.

Ah, glad you asked because this is precisely what I highlighted to a friend yesterday : it works, even that!

I make online purchases, like train tickets here in Belgium on the go, with the phone, via the website of SNCB (the national railroad) or any most other commercial website basically. So yes at least some banking apps do work, as I can't obviously confirm for ALL of them.

In practice you get App Lounge in anonymous mode, letting you download and install apps from the (proxied AFAICT) Play Store. So you do not need to login to any store yet can install apps beyond solely F-Droid. That being said the vast majority of Apps I use come from F-Droid or directly install the .apk via adb.

Exactly! Few months ago a friend was home and I was proudly showcasing my HomeAssistant on RPi, all ZigBee, no non-standards IoT, no vendor lock-in, SteamDeck to play on Linux, streaming videos with VLC on my video projector via miniDLNA, etc. He was impressed... then asked "Right, and what's your phone?" to which I, quite ashamed, had to confess I was relying on an iPhone. It was secure, no Android, etc. On that day I thought "Ok... ok I got PinePhones, I got other gadgets but somehow this specific part of my digital life is wrong!" and thought I should try, even if it wouldn't work, something else. I also wanted, due to geopolitics (sadly), a non American solution so checked volla.online/ which looked wonderful but too expensive for a test. Noticed Murena, French based, refurbished or even new phones but much lower price but still paying for service and I hope for /e/OS maintenance and voila, found a compromise that works for me for now!

OK First thing GOS team is currently assuming that Pixel 10+ won't meet their requirements. But for older Pixels it's tough. Google just stopped sharing vendor blob, device tree, and instead of openly developing AOSP now it is fully behind close doors only releasing source later with full update. But I have hope. I've been daily driving custom ROMs for 10+ years and before I could afford Pixel I had cheap phones which also didn't share any of these things but custom ROMs were very much thriving and they will always. Yes there may be a little more delay for new devices. All the new features may take longer but GOS already has a lot of security and privacy stuff figured out.

I think we should all support however we can to not just GOS but also other Custom ROMs. Because there will always be those who'll stop society from progressing and all we can do is fight back with donations, our time, and resources.

I've decided not to invest in any more Pixels, personally. Even if they reverse the decision this time, it just means it will happen later, so then future versions of the OS will be out of reach or at least not as good as they could have been. I probably will keep my Pixel 7 Pro with Graphene until the battery is too bad for daily use.

How do you deal with renewing ID/official documentation?

May be a stupid question, but it occurred to me that when renewing official IDs, fingerprints are registered, and of course, there's a clean shot of your face. Kinda makes me uncomfortable, since fascism seems to be on the rise pretty much everywhere. How do you guys deal with this? Necessary evil?

I usually ignore renewals as much as I can. My last ID card was 8 years overdue.

I live in the EU and thus I can travel pretty far away without having to ever show my ID card. Maybe it’s just personal experience but whenever I had to show it, no-one cared about it wasn’t valid anymore.

Another trick is acting stupid: “Oh, thank you! I didn’t notice! When would a normal person check that, eh? 🙂 … Right on next Monday I’ll going to renew it!” and then hasta la vista, we won’t meet ever again anyways.

The next time I have to renew it, is in 2031. I guess I won’t renew it till 2040.

depending on how you look, what your hair & skin colour is, you may be checked "randomly" while you're walking home or when you're crossing borders on a train. If your ID isn't valid, they won't just "not care about it"

that polite policeman passing you by with a "good day" would wake me up on the train to ~~check~~ harass me to see if i'm hiding who knows what in my testicles 🤬

… and even more where you cross the border. If I want to go (like in “just walk there”) from Poland to Germany, I could use this bridge for example:

It’s really just an ordinary bridge across a river, no border patrol, no ID check, nothing. Just walk from one country into another.

Or if I want to cross the border from Germany to France, I could just use that publicly accessible hiking path:

(Seen from French side, the barrier where the people sit is the whole border crossing point.) And this bridge with a view brings you from France to Spain.

Except border check points you’ll find luxury housing on French side and commercial buildings (stores and some warehouses) on Spain side.

At no point in that imaginary journey (now that I think about it, this would make a great road trip with hiking parts) you need your ID card when you travel to another country.

Long story short: It’s really easy to cross borders in the EU.

It depends where you are and what you're renewing. Lots of these things (photos/fingerprints/etc) may be optional. Research beforehand, talk with the staff, express your concerns, be polite, and see which parts you can opt out.

California ID just has a thumb print and has had it for decades. Renewing mostly gives them reiteration of info that they already have.

The American fear of a proper ID system is puzzling to me. It's constant fear mongering of overreach by the man and not enough appreciation of the benefits. The first one is a self-updating voter registry that eliminates the process of registering or having to check on your registration to make sure you didn't get knocked off for no good reason. All people need to update their home addresses when they move. Another benefit is - if implemented well of course - that everybody could have a 2FA-quality chip in their pocket to allow for many services to be done reasonably safely online. The dreaded lines of the DMV come to mind. Another benefit is you could prove very quickly who you are, especially if fingerprints are on the chip, to counter mistaken identity arrests that may or may not have been instigated by a so-called AI.

So the government knows everything about you, sure. But it's not a one-sided deal. And frankly, even if the government did not have this information on you before it turned tyrannical, it would ID you as a possible malcontent in no time. Your data is already available for sale on various data broker sites.

I realize that me preaching the benefits of a proper ID system to the Americans in times of 47 and ICE raids is a bit wonky. I am not going to speculate if the self-updating voter registry could've prevented 47. And ICE under 47 might find its job "easier." But from what I've read and heard they haven't exactly been detail-oriented public servants. When the rule of law breaks down everybody gets effed. And so-called illegal immigrants also have phones and use the internet so their information was also available for sale before stable genius returned to the orange office.

Of course there are dangers that need to be addressed. Access to the database needs to be tighter than a sphincter and every query needs to be logged. Every system will be abused. Checks and balances need to be there, ideally with a right to find out who looked you up and for what reason for everyone. I'd prefer a system embedded in law over internet data brokers.

You make good points, but there have been moves recently to try to make "motor voter" systems (you register to vote automatically when you get your driver's license) illegal in the US...

Why would people in the right mind bind the right to vote to a document that allows you to operate a vehicle on public roads anyways?

These laws provide a way to register to vote. Not the only way. Because, in the US, most adults have a drivers license, they are the default form of photo ID. Even people who don't drive are most likely to get their photo ID from the DMV. (For those not in the US this probably seems weird and they are not wrong.)

Because the DMV has become the default issuer of photo IDs in the US, and because there are requirements to update one's address when moving, the DMV knows where everyone lives (at least for the most part).

These laws then say "hey, your ID says you live at 123 Main St, any town" would you like us to register you to vote there too? It's not the only way to register to vote, someone can still register directly via a dedicated form, it's just another way to register that makes it much easier for many people.

In practice, these laws massively increase voter registration numbers.

This is it. Yes, a registration/ID system can make the tasks of a tyrannical government slightly easier, but not having one didn't exactly stop ICE raids. On the contrary, having such a system would make it much easier for legal immigrants to prove that they are legal and it could help them against illegal deportation due to misidentification.

And in any case the problem is the tyrannical government, not the ID system.

I don't remember ever being fingerprinted to get ID. Maybe when I got a passport as a kid, but never for a driver's license.

There are countries where a government ID is needed from opening a bank account to buying even prepaid Sim cards to LPG, electricity connection and everything in between and this ID requires you to give your all 10 fingerprints, iris scan and photo from all 3 angles. And to top it all off this data is leaked multiple times.

IMHO it goes deeper than getting your biometrics, namely do you trust your government? If you do not ... then finding "tricks", technical or legal, will not help in the long run. You need a new government either by changing the one you have or if in feasible becoming citizen of one you do trust.

So... yes necessary "evil" but I'd argue the question is rather how to held the government holding your data accountable, not how to find ways not to have your government hold data. Your government having your data is precisely what let you legally exist and it's hard to imagine, but maybe it's just my own shortcomings, being able to exist in a legal system without identifying you as an individual. Note though that this is NOT the same as surveillance.

I don't know about OP but in México when you get your driver's license, passport or file taxes, fingerprints and iris recognition are a must, no exceptions.

I’m just gonna say. Might the suspect have been a police officer? I wouldn’t trust the police to disclose that.
