Processo a Giordano Bruno: arresto, accuse, condanna a morte

Even paying victims lose their data with Anubis ransomware

A wiper module makes the Akira ransomware more effective than before. Even if victims pay the ransom, they lose their data. The question is whether this strategy will remain successful for the attackers.

Israel furious as France shuts four weapons stands at Paris Airshow

LE BOURGET, France/JERUSALEM, June 16 (Reuters) - France has shut down the four main Israeli company stands at the Paris Airshow for apparently displaying offensive weapons, in a move condemned by Israel that highlights the growing tensions between the traditional allies.

A source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Monday that the instruction came from French authorities after Israeli firms failed to comply with a direction from a French security agency to remove offensive or kinetic weapons from the stands.

Three smaller Israeli stands, which didn't have hardware on display, and an Israeli Ministry of Defence stand, remain open.

I made this post piefed.social/post/931182

There have been some problems with federation lately. I believe the cause is that following piefed communities from other instances has had some bugs, which I've just fixed.

Going to Lemmy, leave the community and then join again will probably help to make future posts arrive. I've already done that for South Africa, you don't need to - I'm just saying it so others can see it.

Study: Remote working benefits fathers while childless men miss sense of community

in reply to Pro

I know this a gross oversimplification, but:

"Remote working benefit those with a reason to stay home, but doesn't for those who don't have a reason to stay home" seems to be the general idea of the headline.

edit: I think this is the study they're talking about, please double check the source before quoting: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/367183…

This was also my experience during the main sweep of the pandemic. It was so great getting to cut the commute and be home. Something I have luckily managed to largely continue. Prior to the pandemic my kid was in daycare pretty much 7:30-5:30 so it was really nice to not have to do that, plus during our lockdown we used to go for a family walk at lunchtime.

While some of the single guys I worked with hated staying home and were straight back in the office the moment they were allowed.

in reply to Dave

Yeah I went 3 months without having a single face to face conversation with someone, it was pretty shit even with online gaming and discord.
in reply to Saff

During the pandemic my partner stayed inside for about a month, I was the only person she interacted with. I kept going to work because I was an "essential" worker (not really), so I kinda envied her, but by the end of that month she was going a bit crazy.

Is the Gnome Background Apps UI a complete Mess or do I miss something?

Since Gnome 44 there is a new UI to show apps (i.e. messengers, sync clients, ...) that run in the background. It is supposed to take the place of the tray icons. In my experience it's basically not working, though.

The only app I use that uses the UI is the nextcloud client. But that thing's autostart seems to be very unreliable and most of the time I have to start it manually after booting. Could be an issue with the app and not with Gnome, but I don't know.

I also use Telegram and Element, but both still seem to use the old tray icons that you now need to install an extension for to work. Meaning that with vanilla Gnome when you close the Telegram window, the app is stopped and can't receive massages in the background.

Is the new UI broken or are app developers just not implementing it into their apps or what's wrong with the current situaltion?

in reply to Vittelius

I have telegram installed as flatpak and it still does not show up. I works with the "AppIndicator and KStatusNotifierItem Support" extension, though
in reply to marius

I could be completely wrong, but the fact, that you stated, that Telegram doesn't receive messages without the tray icon leads me to believe that they are doing background services wrong. Because the status icon in the tray is supposed to be exactly that. The service itself shouldn't be tied to that.

She married a U.S. citizen for love. After she alleged abuse, he threatened deportation.

Excerpts:

The Facebook message that popped into her account started as a flirtation: "Hey, how are you?"

She had newly arrived from Bangladesh to study for her master's in information technology on a student visa in 2022 and wasn't interested in a relationship.

She liked the message. Then he texted again a few days later, "Hey, I have tickets to a Broadway show."

She had never been to a Broadway show before, so she went — and their whirlwind first date quickly turned to love for her and then marriage. […]

Her new husband filed for a green card for his wife. A temporary one was granted, and she moved to his family's house in Brooklyn.

The future seemed bright. […]

Now, just a little more than a year later, the 31-year-old woman, who asked CBS News not to use her name due to safety fears, has separated from her husband after alleging abuse — and is now worried about being deported.

[…]

Crystal Justice, chief external affairs officer at the National Domestic Violence Hotline, told CBS News in a statement that they have seen abusive partners "threatening to deport a partner or their family or withholding legal documents to limit a person's ability to travel."

Oh good, it will be in the public domain.

OpenAI, which is also fighting a string of copyright lawsuits, donated $50 million this year to a group of research institutions including Oxford University’s 400-year-old Bodleian Library, which is digitizing rare texts and using AI to help transcribe them.

When the company first reached out to the Boston Public Library, one of the biggest in the U.S., the library made clear that any information it digitized would be for everyone, said Jessica Chapel, its chief of digital and online services.

“OpenAI had this interest in massive amounts of training data. We have an interest in massive amounts of digital objects. So this is kind of just a case that things are aligning,” Chapel said.

Advice on a CAD solution

I'm in need of a CAD program with an easy aproach for someone with zero experience on this type of software.

3D printing is not a concern

I intend to draw the blueprints for my house. The building is old, no blueprints exist for it, and I intend to make renovations to it, so having blueprints to work on to plan the renovations will be a huge help.

in reply to qyron

I've been doing amazing stuff in FreeCAD. It has a lot of power that lets me do things I never thought I would be able to do. It's also riddled with bugs that will make you want to throw your computer out the window.

My success with FreeCAD comes from extremely strict version control and years of use. I've learned to live with a few specific bugs. For example, external geometry doesn't work and hasn't for 14 months. Don't believe the forum when they say it works. It does not. In any given sketch, you will be able to make is 0 or 1 external link work properly without breaking your drawing. If you have more than one external link, even if you aren't using any of them, it will give you a "wire not closed" error when trying to pad or pocket.

Oddly, the subshape binder works perfectly and it is the illegitimate brother of external links. It even uses the external link tool to define import links from the binder object. Using a master sketch and the subshape binder is absolutely brilliant and wildly productive.

It comes down to having several tools to do any given thing but only one or two may be working.

There is a decent architectural plug-in for FreeCAD. I think Yorik wrote it, some time ago, but it's brilliant. I've used it for doing exactly what you describe on several house projects and it's helped quite a bit with renovations.

SweetHome3d is also a decent app but extremely primative and it's not going to create professional looking blueprints for anyone. It's really just a toy but can be extremely useful for mocking up a design or room layout. I have used it for years with great benefit. It's simple, quite powerful, and a brilliant visualization tool.

Honestly, if you want to create real blueprints to give to a builder, you're going to need Windows or OSX and one of a handful of applications, preeminently AutoDesk REVIT. REVIT is probably over specified for your purpose but it's the adult table. At least know it's there if you find linux apps have too many shortcomings.

Look at QCad. They have a paid ($40), and a free version that is fully functional and open source. It's the most autocad-like app out there, so learning that has the advantage of learning the UI of autocad too.

LibreCad that others suggested was forked from Qcad about 15 years ago and hasn't moved much in terms of features. While QCad has. So in my opinion, it's the best solution.

Then there's Freecad, but that's more about 3D cad, and it's more complicated overall.

Pussy Riot’s founder built a ‘police state’ in an LA art gallery. Then the national guard arrived

Nadya Tolokonnikova, the co-founder of the feminist art collective Pussy Riot, was sitting in a replica Russian prison cell in downtown Los Angeles when the police started shutting down the streets around the art museum.

Tolokonnikova was only three and a half days into what was supposed to be a “durational performance” reenacting her two years as a political prisoner in Vladimir Putin’s Russia.

But Donald Trump had ordered national guard troops into Los Angeles, over the objections of California’s governor, and the protests against immigration raids that Trump wanted to target were happening just a block from the gallery where Tolokonnikova was performing.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (Moca) hastily decided to shut its doors. But Tolokonnikova, 35, whose political art has left her as a wanted criminal in Russia, chose to continue her performance inside the empty museum.

“Police State Exhibit Closed Today Due to the Police State,” she posted on Instagram.
