Meta rolled back protections. Now hate is surging - What we're seeing: More hate, more fear, less freedom.

On January 7, 2025, Meta announced sweeping changes to its content moderation policies, including the end of third-party fact-checking in the U.S., and rollbacks to its hate speech policy globally that remove protections for women, people of color, trans people, and more. In the absence of data from Meta, we decided to go straight to users to assess if and how harmful content is manifesting on Meta platforms in the wake of January rollbacks.

Protester shot and killed at 'No Kings' rally in Utah, police say

A man who was believed to be part of a peacekeeping team for the “No Kings” protest in Salt Lake City shot at a person who was brandishing a rifle at demonstrators, striking both the rifleman and a bystander who later died at the hospital, authorities said Sunday.

Police took the alleged rifleman, Arturo Gamboa, 24, into custody Saturday evening on a murder charge, Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd said at a Sunday news conference. The bystander was Arthur Folasa Ah Loo, 39, a fashion designer from Samoa.

Detectives don’t yet know why Gamboa pulled out a rifle or ran from the peacekeepers, but they accused him of creating the dangerous situation that led to Ah Loo’s death. The Associated Press did not immediately find an attorney listed for Gamboa or contact information for his family in public records.

Russia’s war against Ukraine

At a Father’s Day celebration, children whose fathers died in the war take part in the ‘Native Angel’ art project in Lviv, Ukraine, June 15, 2025. Ukrainian agents cause millions in damage during secret sabotage operation in Russia, HUR source says. Ukraine’s military intelligence (HUR) ignited an electrical substation during a sabotage operation in the Russian city of Kaliningrad, causing $5 million in damage and cutting electricity to a military production site, a source in HUR told the Kyiv Independent.

Russian strike hit Boeing office in Kyiv in deliberate attack on US business, FT reports. “This is not just an attack against Ukraine, but also an attack where American business is being hit,” said Andy Hunder, President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine.

Russia reports Ukrainian drone attack on drone factory in Tatarstan. The drones were shot down, but the debris fell on a plant in the town of Yelabuga, where Shahed-type attack drones are manufactured, causing a fire.

Another 1,200 bodies of fallen Ukrainians return home after exchange with Russia. Law enforcement investigations and institutions from Ukraine’s Interior Ministry will examine and identify the bodies in the near future, the Coordinating Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War said.

Russian mass attack hits energy infrastructure in Poltava Oblast. Of the 183 drones Russia launched, Ukrainian air defense neutralized 159, Ukraine’s Air Force said. Ukraine also shot down 2 Kinzhal ballistic missiles and six out of eight cruise missiles.

Trump says he’s ‘open to’ Putin mediating between Israel, Iran. “Yeah, I would be open to it,” U.S. President Donald Trump said. “He is ready. He called me about it. We had a long talk about it. We talked about this more than his situation. This is something I believe is going to get resolved.”

‘Spit in face’ — Zelensky condemns Russia’s mass attack, dismisses idea of Putin as peacemaker. “This is Russia’s spit in the face of everything the international community is trying to do to stop this war … At the same time as Putin tries to portray himself as a mediator for the Middle East. The level of cynicism is staggering.”

North Korean losses exceed 6,000 in Russia’s Kursk Oblast, UK intelligence reports. North Korea has lost over 6,000 troops in Russia’s Kursk Oblast—more than half of its deployed force, according to a June 15 UK defense intelligence report.

Ukraine catches Russian agent secretly filming airfield, Ukrainian Security Service says. If found guilty, the 24-year-old native of Rivne Oblast faces life imprisonment for high treason.

Trump arrives at G7 summit ahead of high-stakes meeting with Zelensky. The anticipated third meeting, scheduled for June 17, will focus on sanctions, peace talks, weapons purchases, and economic relations — and may shed light on the future of U.S. support for Ukraine.

Ukrainian actor Yuriy Felipenko killed on the front line. Felipenko was well known for his role in the 2024 series “A Promise to God” before joining the Achilles Strike Drone Battalion, part of Ukraine’s 92nd Assault Brigade, in April 2024.

General Staff: Russia has lost 1,003,860 troops in Ukraine since Feb 24, 2022. The number includes 1,170 casualties that Russian forces suffered just over the past day.

International response

EU leaders call for tougher sanctions on Russia at G7 summit. “We must put more pressure on Russia to secure a real ceasefire, to bring Russia to the negotiating table, and to end this war. Sanctions are critical to that end,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said.

Your Brain on ChatGPT: Accumulation of Cognitive Debt when Using an AI Assistant for Essay Writing Task

geteilt von: feddit.org/post/14273969

This is a paper for a MIT study. Three groups of participants where tasked to write an essay. One of them was allowed to use a LLM. These where the results:

The participants mental activity was also checked repeatedly via EEG. As per the papers abstract:

EEG revealed significant differences in brain connectivity: Brain-only participants exhibited the strongest, most distributed networks; Search Engine users showed moderate engagement; and LLM users displayed the weakest connectivity. Cognitive activity scaled down in relation to external tool use.

This mother relies on SNAP to help feed her kids. Now, she's bracing for cuts

Millions of people who use the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) are facing changes, not only to what kinds of food they can buy, but how much money they receive, what they have to do to be eligible for the program, or if they qualify for benefits at all.

The Trump administration last week allowed more states to stop people from using benefits to buy sugary food and drinks. And the budget reconciliation bill currently includes deep cuts to the program. Some say they cannot imagine how they will keep themselves and their families fed if these new proposals are approved.

Israel furious as France shuts four weapons stands at Paris Airshow

LE BOURGET, France/JERUSALEM, June 16 (Reuters) - France has shut down the four main Israeli company stands at the Paris Airshow for apparently displaying offensive weapons, in a move condemned by Israel that highlights the growing tensions between the traditional allies.

A source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Monday that the instruction came from French authorities after Israeli firms failed to comply with a direction from a French security agency to remove offensive or kinetic weapons from the stands.

Three smaller Israeli stands, which didn't have hardware on display, and an Israeli Ministry of Defence stand, remain open.

There have been some problems with federation lately. I believe the cause is that following piefed communities from other instances has had some bugs, which I've just fixed.

Going to Lemmy, leave the community and then join again will probably help to make future posts arrive. I've already done that for South Africa, you don't need to - I'm just saying it so others can see it.

Is the Gnome Background Apps UI a complete Mess or do I miss something?

Since Gnome 44 there is a new UI to show apps (i.e. messengers, sync clients, ...) that run in the background. It is supposed to take the place of the tray icons. In my experience it's basically not working, though.

The only app I use that uses the UI is the nextcloud client. But that thing's autostart seems to be very unreliable and most of the time I have to start it manually after booting. Could be an issue with the app and not with Gnome, but I don't know.

I also use Telegram and Element, but both still seem to use the old tray icons that you now need to install an extension for to work. Meaning that with vanilla Gnome when you close the Telegram window, the app is stopped and can't receive massages in the background.

Is the new UI broken or are app developers just not implementing it into their apps or what's wrong with the current situaltion?

in reply to Vittelius

I have telegram installed as flatpak and it still does not show up. I works with the "AppIndicator and KStatusNotifierItem Support" extension, though
in reply to marius

I could be completely wrong, but the fact, that you stated, that Telegram doesn't receive messages without the tray icon leads me to believe that they are doing background services wrong. Because the status icon in the tray is supposed to be exactly that. The service itself shouldn't be tied to that.

She married a U.S. citizen for love. After she alleged abuse, he threatened deportation.

Excerpts:

The Facebook message that popped into her account started as a flirtation: "Hey, how are you?"

She had newly arrived from Bangladesh to study for her master's in information technology on a student visa in 2022 and wasn't interested in a relationship.

She liked the message. Then he texted again a few days later, "Hey, I have tickets to a Broadway show."

She had never been to a Broadway show before, so she went — and their whirlwind first date quickly turned to love for her and then marriage. […]

Her new husband filed for a green card for his wife. A temporary one was granted, and she moved to his family's house in Brooklyn.

The future seemed bright. […]

Now, just a little more than a year later, the 31-year-old woman, who asked CBS News not to use her name due to safety fears, has separated from her husband after alleging abuse — and is now worried about being deported.

[…]

Crystal Justice, chief external affairs officer at the National Domestic Violence Hotline, told CBS News in a statement that they have seen abusive partners "threatening to deport a partner or their family or withholding legal documents to limit a person's ability to travel."

Oh good, it will be in the public domain.

OpenAI, which is also fighting a string of copyright lawsuits, donated $50 million this year to a group of research institutions including Oxford University’s 400-year-old Bodleian Library, which is digitizing rare texts and using AI to help transcribe them.

When the company first reached out to the Boston Public Library, one of the biggest in the U.S., the library made clear that any information it digitized would be for everyone, said Jessica Chapel, its chief of digital and online services.

“OpenAI had this interest in massive amounts of training data. We have an interest in massive amounts of digital objects. So this is kind of just a case that things are aligning,” Chapel said.
