The warmongers were wrong about Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya. Now watch them make the same mistake about Iran.
As the G7 issues a statement declaring that Israel has a “right to defend itself”, you have a right to ask if you are losing your mind. Israel launched an unprovoked onslaught on Iran. Its excuse – that Tehran may acquire a nuclear weapon – renders its attack illegal under the UN charter, which forbids wars justified by the claim of a future threat.“Iran is the principal source of regional instability and terror,” declares the G7 statement. Even though Donald Trump’s intelligence chief testified three months ago that the US intelligence community “continues to assess that Iran is not building a nuclear weapon”. Even though it’s Israel that actually possesses nuclear weapons, while refusing to sign the nuclear non-proliferation treaty and refusing International Atomic Energy Agency inspections. Even though, as progress was being made in nuclear talks between Iran and the US, Israel targeted Iran’s chief negotiator and proceeded to exterminate scientists, including their families, alongside countless other civilians, including children, an athlete, a teacher, a pilates instructor. Even though Israel’s leader is subject to an arrest warrant, accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity. And even though Israel has erased Gaza in a genocidal frenzy, and subjected the illegally occupied and colonised West Bank to an escalating pogrom, attacked southern Lebanon and Beirut, and invaded and occupied Syria. No country in the Middle East is as great a source of regional instability and terror as Israel: it’s not even close.
Let's keep it civil, Beeple.

With disbarment decision, John Eastman's downfall continues
For any lawyer, this is a professional death sentence. But the court’s decision is not only a devastating blow to Eastman but also to the Trumpist myth that the 2020 presidential election was stolen.
The case is unique and momentous because this is the only proceeding where Eastman, along with supporting denialist enthusiasts, testified under oath, cross-examined their critics and presented their full denialism defense. Eastman — assisted by his denialist apostles, who took 19 days to testify, present 7 witnesses and introduce over 180 document exhibits — had more than his day in court. He also presented his stolen election narrative to the public-at-large, with thousands watching by Zoom.

Silicon Valley Execs Join the Army as Officers (But Won't Have to Attend Boot Camp)
The U.S. military recently announced that four executives from some of the top tech companies in Silicon Valley have joined the Army Reserve as direct-commissioned officers. The move is part of a push to speed up the adoption of technology in the military, but as the news outlet Task & Purpose points out, it’s pretty unusual.
The Army said in a press release that the four executives are Shyam Sankar, CTO at Palantir; Andrew Bosworth, CTO at Meta; Kevin Weil, Chief Product Officer of OpenAI; and Bob McGrew, an advisor at Thinking Machines Lab and former Chief Research Officer for OpenAI.
The four men are being commissioned at the high rank of lieutenant colonel as part of a program called Detachment 201: The Army’s Executive Innovation Corps. As Task & Purpose notes, the men will get to skip the usual process of taking a Direct Commissioning Course at Fort Benning, Georgia, and they won’t need to complete the Army Fitness Test.

US supreme court upholds Tennessee ban on youth gender-affirming care
A Tennessee state law banning gender-affirming care for minors can stand, the US supreme court has ruled, a devastating loss for trans rights supporters in a case that could set a precedent for dozens of other lawsuits involving the rights of transgender children.
The case, United States v Skrmetti, was filed last year by three families of trans children and a provider of gender-affirming care. In oral arguments, the plaintiffs – as well as the US government, then helmed by Joe Biden – argued that Tennessee’s law constituted sex-based discrimination and thus violated the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment. Under Tennessee’s law, someone assigned female at birth could not be prescribed testosterone, but someone assigned male at birth could receive those drugs.

We caught 4 more states sharing personal health data with Big Tech
Nevada, Maine, Rhode Island and Massachusetts:
State-run health care websites around the country, meant to provide a simple way to shop for insurance, have been quietly sending visitors’ sensitive health information to Google and social media companies, The Markup and CalMatters found.
The data, including prescription drug names and dosages, was sent by web trackers on state exchanges set up under the Affordable Care Act to help Americans purchase health coverage.
As visitors answered the questions, their responses were sent to LinkedIn and Snapchat, according to tests conducted by The Markup and CalMatters in April and May.
On the other side of the country, Maine’s exchange, CoverME.gov, sent information on drug prescriptions and dosages to Google through an analytics tool. It also sent the names of doctors and hospitals that people had previously visited.

Iodine in Action: Vital for Health, Critical for Industry
Iodine
Iodine is a non-metallic chemical element that belongs to the halogen group in the periodic table. It is known for its distinctive deep violet color in its vapor form and its shiny, dark-gray appearance in solid form. Iodine plays a critical role in various biological, medical, and industrial applications due to its unique chemical properties, such as high reactivity and the ability to form compounds with many elements.
One of the most important functions of iodine is in human health, where it is an essential trace element required for the synthesis of thyroid hormones. These hormones—thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3)—are crucial for regulating metabolism, growth, and development. A deficiency in iodine can lead to conditions such as goiter, hypothyroidism, and developmental disorders. To combat iodine deficiency, many countries implement iodine fortification programs, such as the addition of iodine to table salt (iodized salt).
In the medical field, iodine and its compounds have a long history of use. Iodine solutions are widely used as antiseptics and disinfectants. For example, povidone-iodine is commonly applied to skin before surgical procedures to reduce the risk of infection. Iodine is also used as a contrast agent in radiographic imaging procedures, particularly in X-rays and CT scans, due to its high atomic number, which allows it to absorb radiation effectively and enhance image contrast.

Peel with Purpose: The Science Behind Release Liners
Release Liners
Release liners are specialized materials used as protective layers to prevent adhesives from prematurely bonding to surfaces. They serve as carrier substrates that are coated with a release agent—commonly silicone or other low-surface-energy materials—that enables the easy separation of the liner from the adhesive layer during application. These liners play a critical role across numerous industries, including labels and tapes, medical products, hygiene items, industrial laminates, and composite materials.
The primary function of a release liner is to protect pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) until they are ready for use. Once the liner is removed, the adhesive can bond to a target surface. This makes release liners indispensable in the production and application of self-adhesive products, ensuring ease of handling, preventing contamination, and extending the shelf life of the adhesive layer.
Release liners are typically constructed using various base materials such as paper, film, or specialty substrates, which are then coated with a release agent. Paper-based liners are widely used due to their cost-effectiveness and compatibility with many applications. They include glassine, supercalendered kraft, and clay-coated papers. Film-based liners, made from polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyester (PET), or polyolefin blends, offer superior strength, dimensional stability, and moisture resistance, making them suitable for demanding or high-performance uses.

The Ink You Don’t Taste: Low Migration Inks Explained
Low Migration Inks
Low migration inks are specialized printing inks formulated to minimize the transfer of ink components from packaging materials into the packaged product, particularly food, pharmaceuticals, or personal care items. This is essential in ensuring consumer safety, especially when products are sensitive to contamination or are in direct or indirect contact with printed surfaces. These inks are designed in compliance with stringent regulatory standards and are widely used in the packaging industry, especially for food-safe and health-compliant applications.
The term "migration" refers to the movement of substances—such as solvents, photoinitiators, plasticizers, or other additives—from the printed layer through the packaging material and into the product. Migration can occur through direct contact or via the set-off effect, where printed surfaces come into contact with the unprinted side of packaging materials during stacking or rolling. Low migration inks are engineered to resist this transfer, reducing the risk of contamination and preserving the integrity and safety of the packaged goods.
Formulating low migration inks involves careful selection of raw materials, particularly those with high molecular weights, low volatility, and minimal extractability. The ink components—such as binders, pigments, solvents, and additives—are chosen based on their low potential to migrate and their compliance with applicable food safety regulations and industry standards. Additionally, these inks often include special curing mechanisms, such as UV or electron beam (EB) curing, which help fully crosslink the ink film and minimize residual substances that could migrate.

in reply to themurphy • • •It really sounds great, but I've also read that the law contains zero directions/rules on prices for the replacement parts. So you might be able to get a replacement battery for your 200€ phone, but having to pay 200€ for it.
I man I hope not, and maybe not every company will go out of their way to follow the most malicious interpretation of the law they can (competitors might not, it's still a somewhat competitive market).

in reply to Creat • • •On the assumption that consumers are somehow rational and have some memory, that "trick" only work once.
Next time a consumer get stuck with a practically irreplaceable battery because it's too expensive from a company, they will look at other companies selling equivalent products, AND how much they are charging for batteries. I also imagine a business of spare parts because just having to give the right data, e.g. specifications like cell, module, pack, C-rate, E-rate, SOC, DOD, voltage, capacity, energy, cycle life, but also connectors and just size, will probably open up dedicated spare part vendors.

Unfortunately unwise me bought a fancy designer bike made by a national startup (CowBoy, to name and shame them) and I'm now stuck with a fancy metal frame on wheels because the belt is not in stock. Ordered in February, supposed to arrive 60 days later, I'm still waiting, not even an email received, nothing in now late June.
So... yes my next e-bike will be very VERY boring, in the sense of relying on built that have easy to source replacement part.
Yes, it did take few a first relatively large mistake (even though I did use that bike daily for years already) but that's what I meant by "only work once". You try, make painful mistake, don't repeat.
balsoft
in reply to utopiah • • •No. Just look at the current phone market. The average consumer doesn't care enough about repairs down the road, or at least it doesn't affect their purchasing decisions, they are mostly driven by convenience and familiarity. If what you're saying was true, everyone would be buying fairphones.
Those specs are already widely available for many phones and in fact you can buy aftermarket 3rd-party batteries for most of them. The problem is that battery replacements are painful, require specialized equipment (at least a hotplate, suction cup, spudger for most phones) and skills (not breaking the screen/glass back, unglueing the battery without exploding it, then carefully glueing everything back together etc). This is what the law should be addressing first; if it were easy to replace batteries (like a 1-minute job instead of 30-minute job), you would see a lot more DYI replacements and probably way longer lasting phones on average.
