Despite the downvotes you've received, I appreciate you posting this, because I am always jazzed to discover "classic" pieces that are new to me.

Only a couple. I can imagine that "the user is not the enemy" may be a difficult sentiment for some people with heavily user-facing roles. I'm curious what federated service you're interfacing with this from. I imagine that's why you didn't see the votes on your comment. I am posting this via Lemmy

Waymo robotaxi stopped illegally, passenger opened door and severely injured cyclist, lawsuit claims

A woman severely hurt in a bicycle crash with a Waymo robotaxi is suing the company, claiming one of its vehicles pulled over in a no-stopping zone next to a bike lane, and a passenger opened a door into her path — despite the car’s “Safe Exit” system touted by the Mountain View company as protection for passing cyclists.

Waymo in online marketing materials says its robotaxi Safe Exit sensor and warning systems provide departing passengers with “explicit audio and visual alerts that inform them when a cyclist or other road user is approaching as they exit the car.” The company cites San Francisco’s transit agency in noting that collisions between cyclists and vehicle doors — incidents known as “doorings” — are the city’s second most common collisions causing death or injury.

The passengers from the robotaxi whose door hit Hanke said at the scene that no alert had been given before one of them opened the door into the bike lane, Hanke said. The lawsuit alleged “a malfunction, failure to engage, or design flaw” in the alert system.

News Brief: Natural Disaster-izing the Deliberate US-Israeli Starvation Campaign in Gaza (Podcast 29mins)

In this News Brief, we are joined by Ashley Bohrer and Ben Teller of Jewish Voice for Peace Chicago to discuss media indifference to the US and Israel-imposed starvation of Palestinians, how sectarianism is central to the ADL's strategy, and why six JVP activists have decided to hunger strike to draw more attention to the Israeli and US-made famine in Gaza.

I read somewhere a long time ago, that eventually the economy will cater to the ultra rich and the lower income class, will still get products, but much lower end stuff or stuff made from the leftovers from the ultra rich.

One example that was given was a game with pay to win mechanics. Most people can play the game and grind away, but the real experience of the game can only be played by people who spend $500 on extra stuff.

Federal agents denied entry to Dodger Stadium parking lot, sparking new outrage over Trump sweeps

from Los Angeles Times
Terry Castleman, Jack Harris
Thu, June 19, 2025 at 2:07 PM EDT

"In photos posted on social media Thursday, a procession of vehicles appeared to attempt to enter #DodgerStadium through the ballpark’s main Sunset Gate off Vin Scully Avenue around 8 a.m. However, they were prevented from passing through a security checkpoint leading to the parking lot.

The caravan then relocated to the stadium’s Downtown Gate near the 110 Freeway. Dozens of vehicles gathered outside a closed parking lot fence, according to witnesses, before many began dispersing.

Later in the morning, several dozen protesters gathered near what remained of the agents, who stood around three unmarked SUVs closer to the stadium’s entry gates but still outside the stadium parking lot."

They are identical twins.

And the babies don’t look identical because that’s not how it works. Otherwise you would be identical to all your siblings.

Scammers Use Google Ads To Inject Phony Help Lines On Apple, Microsoft Sites

Tech support scammers have devised a method to inject their fake phone numbers into webpages when a target's web browser visits official sites for Apple, PayPal, Netflix, and other companies. The ruse, outlined in a post on Wednesday from security firm Malwarebytes, threatens to trick users into calling the malicious numbers even when they think they're taking measures to prevent falling for such scams. One of the more common pieces of security advice is to carefully scrutinize the address bar of a browser to ensure it's pointing to an organization's official website. The ongoing scam is able to bypass such checks.

Has anyone used Preveil? How is it? Is there any other services similar to it?

Recently, I came across Preveil, which is a service that can provide end-to-end encryption to either your Outlook, Gmail, or Apple Mail email accounts. It’s free, but if you want more storage, obviously, you will need to pay.

It looks very interesting as this could get others to use end-to-end encryption for the emails without having to move to another provider. However, I haven’t really seen any reviews (besides this one from PC Mag) or others expressing their experience with Preveil, so I am unsure if it’s a good service to use or recommend.

Has anyone used it or is familiar with Preveil? Does anyone know if there are similar services to Preveil, preferably those that are open source?

ICE Imposes New Rules on Congressional Visits

In short, ICE policy is to illegally use the threat of shooting to keep elected Democrats from being able to make inspections they're legally allowed to make

Panther Falls, Icefields Parkway, Banff National Park, AB

A short hike made slightly more difficult by the remaining snow in the trail on 5/15, mile long out and back descends from where the parking lot to the falls along a steep ridgeline. Views of bridal veil falls may be seen across the valley, and later in the year a path to them may be accessible.

Panther Falls drops down while the creeksides remain partially snowbound. This fall may create a good snowcone structure in winter based on some of the snow chunks I saw laying around.

The trail passes under a fallen log amid some boulders while bridal veil falls may be seen through a gap in the trees across the valley.

Same view of the falls as the main image, but this time with me being blinded by the blazing sun in the foregound.

SWF at the IGF 2025

This month, the Social Web Foundation is joining the UN’s 20th annual conference on the internet, the Internet Governance Forum. Held in Oslo, Norway, IGF 2025 brings together policymakers, technologists, activists, and academics to address the most press

This month, the Social Web Foundation is joining the UN’s 20th annual conference on the internet, the Internet Governance Forum. Held in Oslo, Norway, IGF 2025 brings together policymakers, technologists, activists, and academics to address the most pressing questions about digital governance. From AI regulation to connectivity in underserved regions, the agenda reflects how internet governance is now inseparable from broader social, economic, and political concerns.

Mallory Knodel, Executive Director of the Social Web Foundation and founder of this newsletter, will be moderating a workshop on “Privacy-Preserving Interoperability and the Fediverse”, a session that speaks directly to the Social Web Foundation’s mission: growing, healthy, sustainable and multi-polar Fediverse.

The session will examine a practical tension: interoperability allows people to move fluidly across platforms—whether it’s Mastodon, PeerTube, or other services in the Fediverse. Yet this fluidity exposes new privacy risks. For example, a user’s profile photo or contact list might unintentionally follow them from one service to another without explicit consent. To ensure the social web continues to grow in a responsible way, we need thoughtful policy, smart technical design, and cross-sector collaboration.

To tackle this, Mallory will be posing three concrete questions to a diverse panel featuring voices from academia, civil society, and the private sector:

  1. User agency: How can we design cross-platform data flows so that individuals—not servers—decide what travels with them?
  2. Legal alignment: What does real compliance with the GDPR look like for a decentralised network, and how might the Digital Markets Act nudge the large incumbents toward meaningful interoperability?
  3. Technical safeguards: Which standards or privacy-enhancing tools could make federation safer by default?

By grounding the discussion in technical and legal constraints, this workshop aims to develop practical, actionable recommendations that platforms, developers, and policymakers can adopt. We’ll refine these into a summary document outlining key takeaways and next steps, which we’ll share in a future edition of this newsletter.

This conversation also comes at a critical time. The momentum behind decentralized platforms is growing, but regulatory clarity and technical safeguards lag behind. Without coordination, we risk repeating the mistakes of Web2: centralisation of power, opaque data practices, and exclusionary design.

Attending the IGF is free! Whether you’re joining us in Oslo or tuning in online, we encourage you to participate. Your questions, insights, and lived experiences help shape the conversation. We’ll be taking audience questions during the session, and they’ll feed directly into the discussion.

PSA for openSUSE Tumbleweed users wondering why Proton doesn't launch properly on a fresh install

Had to deal with this recently. The cause is openSUSE's move to SELinux on new installs, which by default blocks the required permissions for the RPM version of Steam. You can correct this with these commands:
ausearch -c 'steam' --raw | audit2allow -a -M my-steam to create the permissions file and semodule -X 300 -i my-steam.pp to apply it. Hopefully this saves someone else from the wild goose chase I went on earlier.
in reply to heythatsprettygood

I'm pretty sure my steam is installed via flatpak.

Is this only new installs?

in reply to JasonDJ

Only new installs use SELinux by default. Existing installs continue to use AppArmor.

Tip #728

Mute websites in Vivaldi on Android.

If there’s a website that annoys you by playing media with audio, either automatically or it’s easy to accidentally hit play, you have every right to mute the website. Here are two ways to do it in Vivaldi on Android.

Option 1

  1. While a video or sound clip is playing on the web page, tap the shield icon on the Address Bar.
  2. Select Permissions.
  3. Toggle off “Sound”.

Option 2

  1. Go to Settings > Content Settings > Site Settings > Content > Sound.
  2. Tap on “Add site exception”.
  3. Enter the page’s URL.
  4. Tap on “Add”.

Vivaldi on Android with website's permissions menu open. An arrow points at the Sound permission toggle.

✨Late Stage Capitalism✨

Alt Text:

late stage capitalism

You think there are no morons under ANY other regime?? We got this because humanity is absolutely impossibly dumb. We're fucked 6 ways to sunday.

in reply to Rin

  1. Happy Cake day
  2. Rip lemm.ee
  3. This isn’t happening because your average Joe gobbled up anti-vax propaganda. This is happening because the capitalist elite saw an economic slowdown during lockdowns and funded and pushed all sorts of conspiracies. The anti-vaxx, COVID denialist movement didn’t emerge grassroots. It was systematically pushed and promoted by the most powerful people to protect their interests.

Nippon and US Steel complete controversial merger

He gave the official green light to the deal in an executive order on Friday.

Nippon agreed to pay $55 per share and take on the company's debt, a deal worth $14.9bn together.

It said it had also promised the government it would invest $11bn in US Steel by 2028, including a new facility that would be completed after that year.

It also granted the US government a "golden share" in the company, giving the government say over key decisions, including the transfer of jobs or production outside of the US, and certain calls to close or idle factories.

Setting custom image/thumbnails for posts where thumbnails fails to get set automatically

Recent versions of Lemmy have the ability to set a custom thumbnail for a post:

thumbnail

Is this possible with PieFed? This is especially helpful when some sites fail to get a thumbnail (e.g. YT videos is a common one).

Questa voce è stata modificata (3 mesi fa)

This is not currently possible in piefed. However, it is a good idea and a feature of lemmy that I have used on occasion. I think this only really makes sense when making a "Link" post in piefed parlance.

I created a codeberg issue for this.

Salesforce and Slack announce price hikes following expansion of AI integrations

Salesforce will increase prices by an average of 6% across key products including Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, Field Service, and select Industry Clouds. The change applies to Enterprise and Unlimited plans, taking effect August 17, 2025 for renewals, and immediately for new customers. Renewals before that date can postpone the higher rates for about a year.

An Open Letter to the Haters

And by haters I just mean folks who think $12B isn’t a low enough cap…

We are not focused on class war between the majority and the 1%, because (by the numbers) they are not the direct threat to the sustainability of the system. They are not where our money has gone to.

The difference between someone with even $12B and Musk level wealth is the difference between a single story house and a 36 story skyscraper. We are focused on tearing down the skyscraper and taxing the house appropriately. To be frank, the wealth of people with less than a billion dollars is not on our radar as a problem. In contrast, we would like their help in tearing down the skyscrapers. That is the point of our community. We are only after the excess wealth of 250 people in the world.

So again, I welcome you 100% to the tent if you are interested, but politically our goals will always remain simple and be augmented by simple arguments. If that means we are not the community for you, I understand. We’re seeking to act rationally in pursuit of a more ethical world, not to demand ethical perfection from the outset. To be honest I personally believe that ethical perfectionism, infighting, and shrinking the tent are major reasons why progressive movements to rectify wealth inequality constantly fail.

Louis Sachar once wrote an entire book based around the concept that “if you want to fight your way upstream in a river, you have to take small steps”. We arent looking at the end of the river, were looking at the first small steps. (Also that book is a great sequel to Holes for anyone who has never heard of it)

Our argument may seem reductive, but anyone can see the simple nature of the problem. The skyscrapers are a head and shoulders above the single story house. Its a simple problem to see, and an exponential one. 6 people in the world owned half of all the money before covid. Now the problem is even worse. I would venture that the richest 250 people in the world probably own 3/4ths of all the money at this point, at least.

Money was made to move. When that money is parked it doesnt change hands. When it doesnt change hands it doesnt get taxed, things dont get bought. When that happens the government doesnt have the resources it needs, and the economy goes out of whack as well. Its a simple problem that ties into literally every issue imaginable just on that basis. Climate change? We could use more resources to fight it. Materials science to solve the plastic problem? More resources to fight it. People cant afford rent? More resources to pay them. People cant afford healthcare? Do you wish we had bridges to drive over that arent 60+ years old? Are you tired of paying for a fishing/hunting license to subsidize conservation? Everything big and small is impacted in some way by the wealth of the richest 250 people not moving, both inside the US and around the world.

The goal of the movement is not to change the system, really. We arent arguing for moving away from capitalism, even if many of us would like to see that. What we are arguing for is fixing the most unsustainable problem within the system we already have, so that we can continue to fight for a better system in general.

A primary goal is to keep the tent as wide as is possible. The point being that we are fighting specifically on this one issue that should, at least hypothetically, bridge the gap between even people who want radical change and people who want to see no change at all. For people who want radical changes, this is the first step in the right direction. For people who want to see no change at all, this is a step that will prevent the collapse of what they dont want to see changed.

For anyone too broke to afford cost of living, this is what will raise them up to afford a base level of comfort. For the 1%ers, this is what will ensure they get to keep the standard of living they already have, as well as make a shit ton of money off the rest of us. If anything I see this community as an incubation for a political bridge party that can actually bring enough people under one tent to affect change, and breakthrough the various distractions that the richest people in the world rely on so we dont come after them. Red vs blue, black vs white, majority vs 1%ers, and so on and so forth. Its all just bullshit to keep us from paying attention to the 0.0001% who have almost all of the money.

This isnt about redistribution of much of anything from the 1% at large. Its about dislodging the 5 trillion dollars that sit largely in the hands of like 10 people. Just that $5T moving would be enough to allow the rest of the 1% unaffected. Thats like 1/3rd of the federal deficit.

The point of targeting that $5T specifically is because its $5T that is virtually guaranteed to never move otherwise. Its just feel good money for the mega billionaires, which even 1%ers cant relate to nor justify.

We are focused on making the system we have, flawed as it is, a base level of sustainable in the interest of everybody. Capitalism with the bumper guards up. Regardless of what they would want to see next.

To analogize: if were all in one car together right now that is a hunk of shit, and we got a flat tire, the goal for us is to fix the tire so we can make it down the road. Some might want to abandon the car right now even if it means chaos. Some might want to fix the flat so we can get a different car. And some might want to fix the flat so we can keep driving the same hunk of shit. But the goal of our community would be centered on fixing the tire, to avoid chaos and to leave our options open for the future
