Considering the current intrusive cyber climate, what are the best ways to preserve privacy?
For example, I have been exclusively using a VPN connection network-wide at home setup on OpenWrt, which in turn has a PiHole as its DNS, with the PiHole using Unbound and NextDNS (redundant I know, but I use it to encrypt my requests more than anything else).
I also have Wireguard setup so I can VPN all my devices to my network while I am on the road (also have a NextDNS profile installed. Yes I know, it’s redundant).
I also basically have all my “smart” devices (TV, lightbulbs, air purifier, etc…) at home cutoff from the internet using OpenWrt’s firewall to prevent them from calling home.
I rotate web browsers frequently to try and attempt avoiding getting fingerprinted, not sure how useful that is.
I switched email providers to mailbox.org because f*** Google and Microsoft.
I also am hosting my own cloud drive on Nextcloud to avoid using services like GDrive, OneDrive, Dropbox, etc…
I own Apple devices which aren’t the best for privacy but migrating from a whole ecosystem that I have been embedded in for MANY years is easier said than done. Hopefully in the future that’s my next move.
I feel like there is a lot more I can do but I am not sure what else. I would appreciate any and all suggestions ya’ll might have.
EDIT: I’m not being too extreme with my caution as some comments are making it sound to be. I am a very average person who is privacy conscious yet realize being cut off from the internet and society is not realistic. I guess my threat model is your basic “day-to-day it’s non of your business who am I online or what I do, please don’t profile/fingerprint me, I am just a passerby” kinda threat model.
Aside from iOS, I am already there. Soon enough, I hope, I will migrate from Apple’s ecosystem. Already have my Linux box setup and functional recently. One step at a time.
Get rid of all the connected stuff entirely, delete all your online accounts, get rid of your cell phone and similar devices, start paying cash for everything. Close your bank accounts and keep your money under your mattress. Move into the woods, grow your own food, and don't talk to anyone.

You pretty much got the foundational stuff plus a little more established. Aside from getting away from Apple, which you already mentioned, there's not much more I can think of without going full tinfoil hat. The main thing, in my opinion, is just not being a wide open door and giving away your personal data freely. Sounds like you're there, so long as you don't have social media accounts.
More encryption is the only thing I would think worthy of mention since I don't see that listed anywhere. Encrypted messengers, encrypted storage, encrypted emails.
The measures you’ve taken are more than enough for your threat model. I think it now depends on your data hygiene. Weakest link kinda thing, where it doesn’t matter if your home network is locked down and you use privacy friendly services if you’re careless with your data anyway; which I assume you aren’t.
To your point, one example that comes to mind is that I have read many people complaining about cloudflare, saying it’s “evil” and over extending. While I agree on the aspect of Cloudflare being sort of a monopoly, I am not sure what else to use to route some of my traffic to my services running at home without explicitly opening up ports to the internet by using a reverse proxy for example.
In that regard, Cloudflare has access to my traffic and data could theoretically leak that way, but I am not sure what is a safer and better alternative to it.
All data is routed through somewhere you don't have control over at some point. If everything is encrypted then you are fine. You could setup a vps and proxy through that instead of Cloudflare, but you are just relying on the vps provider to protect any data/not snoop then rather than Cloudflare.
The only real way to be completely private is to just avoid connecting to the internet at all, but that's not really feasible. Just get to a point where you are comfortable, you've already done more than most to protect yourself (as much as you can without it getting silly anyway). Good job!
You are still exposed by using Apple products. Use linux for PC's with encryption, vpn. For a phone, switch to device, such as a Google Pixel, or several other manufacturers that can use a privacy android rom. I use CalyxOS, private, secure and de-googled.

I do think their point about not using E2EE enabling better moderation is worth considering, because it’s absolutely true that the server being unable to filter malicious content makes moderation harder. Still, imo any decent chat client should support it as an option, because if I’m talking to friends I don’t want any servers having access for any reason. Large guilds for public info, like the KDE matrix for example, shouldn’t be E2E encrypted for this exact reason (iirc it’s not, because matrix allows the choice and KDE has chosen correctly). Lack of encryption doesn’t mean all moderation issues are solved, though, cuz that same unencrypted KDE matrix had a pretty major problem with CSAM being spammed a while back.
So IMO the ability to disable E2EE is valuable for a discord replacement, but the author’s idea that E2EE shouldn’t be implemented… does not follow.

Agreed. Week 2, switching browser and search is a couple steps and seems like a good on-ramp to build momentum. Week 1, switching email and calendar is several steps per step and requires some consideration and even paying into a new service.
I can't remember, but I think I wanted to be sure anti-tracker extensions was after installing a new browser...otherwise you'd double your work. This is not an iPhone guide; later in the course we talk about getting a privacy-forward phone OS.

Sure. The steam version is easiest, just install steam, get the game through steam and it should just work. Heres a website that tracks compatibility with linux through proton, valve's solution to running windows games, its installed by default when you get steam: protondb.com/app/389730
It has a pretty simple GUI and you can click your configs together.
At first you have to define a "bottle" which simply represents an virtual environment for your Windows-Application or Game.
You can define which Windows Version you want to create and it asks you, if it is a Desktop-App or a Game you want to run. And based on that it will create an environment prepared for your Individual situation.
Idk if you have the specs to run tekken 7 but you can try if you already own the game. sudo dnf install steam Then open steam and go to the settings look for compatibility and make sure thats on. Then try running tekken 7.
If tekken 7 is to laggy you can try tekken 3. If you want to try that I can type up instructions. You can either install the PC version or use a ps2 emulator and play the ps2 versions. I'd recommend the ps2 emulator because its easy and the games are easy to find.
PikaOS maybe too "hobby oriented" to expect "sleep stability", but I understand most/all bugs to be debian or kde upstream ones. Is gnome still much better at stability? Is there a distribution that fixed sleep problems for you? open vs closed nvidia drivers?
Are there motherboard manufacturers that suck less at linux?
I have a Gigabyte motherboard, and the only issue I've run into—even with Arch—is this specific B550 board uses some third-party sensors, and the necessary it87 module doesn't load and isn't included by default. This makes it impossible to utilize tools like CoolerControl to manage fan curves.
Thankfully, some kind soul manages a DKMS module via the AUR, in spite of both Gigabyte and the IC manufacturers being less than helpful.
No issues with Debian / Ubuntu on many laptops since early 2010s, mostly with Intel graphics. I had a Vostro 1400 with Nvidia and it also resumed fine, but that was 2009-11 so the experience with the Nvidia driver from that time is likely irrelevant.
System76, Framework, even Dell officially supports Ubuntu in limited cases.
I'd just try a couple different distros and see which one has the fewest issues for you. If you like, you can pay for official support from Dell or Canonical. If you do identify an issue in a supported scenario (Ubuntu version + device model) they will actually help you troubleshoot and resolve the issue. RHEL is the same if you want to pay a bit more.
I'm running CachyOS with Gnome, Gigabyte motherboard, AMD processor, closed Nvidia drivers, and sleep works just fine. I haven't had any issues in that regard.
Could try Fedora based like Bazzite or just regular Fedora. Obviously a sample size of 2 isn't saying much, but Bazzite is less buggy with the hardware on my HP laptop, and my destop with an Nvidia GPU.
Before asking for another distro, you should figure out, what is the root cause of the trouble you observe. Usually sleep/wake up under Linux are highly hardware dependent. Even the SteamDeck, which has payed first level hardware support by Valve, has sometimes trouble waking up properly after sleep, at least in desktop mode. Good luck!
A problem with PikaOS is that the log files seem bad or I couldn't find the right one. Lots of seemingly amateur errors in log (no permission for system to write to system) that don't seem to lead to imminent crash. Log files don't pick up having to hit power switch maybe.
My main question was the easy "did a distro switch solve sleep issues for anyone"? Maybe switch to Mint would at least have more google hits on solving issues? Someone downvoted the "switch to x11 graphics driver before sleep" try, and I'm losing patience on tracking it down as you suggest.
Not sure if it is applicable, but wouldn't it be an option to use the Fedora Workstation Live CD, mount your swap partition into the live system and send it to sleep via SystemD?
This should give you feedback with a fairly recent kernel and Gnome has (at least for me) been the desktop option with the least amount of bugs I encountered.
Waking up from sleep is of course part graphics card/drivers, and BIOS code. My husband had his share with his nvidia card crashing the system when coming up from sleep under Wayland, but I believe these things have been mostly ironed now. However, if you have a buggy BIOS, you're out of luck. I've had such a DELL laptop, latest firmware installed, and no matter which distro I tried, it wouldn't wake up from sleep properly. So, if that's your issue, there's not much you can do, apart from getting compatible hardware. There are hardware lists of compatible hardware in some places, including archlinux's wiki i believe.
It's probably more to do with hardware than distro. That said, using major distros is more likely to win. FWIW I've used fedora and voidlinux on my 3 Dell laptops over the last 12 years with nary a problem. One of them had nvidia but I used nouveau.
I use Fedora with KDE and never have issues. Though I no longer have NVIDIA cards in any of my computers. The drivers suck on Linux in general and were the cause of many of my previous issues with Linux overall.
And that is still largely true - I’m still running XFCE with xorg on Debian, and I think the only issue I’ve had was Waydroid.
Will there come a day where what you say is true? Yes.
However, right now, a more apt example to convey your point is systemd; that’s true for most distros with a lot of community support. Even then, its hold isn’t absolute - Alpine seems like the most livable non-systemd distro, though I could be wrong.
As I’ve commented elsewhere on this post and others have said, this is a change that affects pretty much no one. I didn’t even know MBR (legacy BIOS) partition tables on UEFI boot was possible, honestly.
By no longer putting in the effort to maintain this bit that no one uses, work can be put to something someone uses.
Also, with Linux, specific distros can get encrapified (kind of happened to Ubuntu), but as others have said, there’s usually always another distro to jump to at worst.

Support for UEFI on MBR was originally added in blivet#764 to accommodate cloud image use cases, such as AWS, which at the time did not support UEFI booting on GPT disks. These constraints no longer apply to modern cloud platforms, making MBR-based UEFI setups unnecessary for current Fedora deployments.
So basically it was some workaround a few years ago. I have a hard time to see any reason speaking against the removal.
For those panicking about it, this is not something you need to worry about. Here’s what this actually does:
Enforce the use of GPT partition tables for all UEFI-based Fedora installations for x86 architecture. This removes support for installing Fedora in UEFI mode on MBR-partitioned disks on x86 systems
You probably have already been using GPT on your UEFI system since you had a UEFI system. Even if you somehow were using MBR, this probably; 1. Won’t break existing installations, as it’s merely support for installs of this type 2. Would not be a problem even if somehow the broke existing installs, as it’s not difficult to convert MBR to GPT.

Poland’s main opposition party, the national-conservative Law and Justice (PiS), has proposed an entry ban for people from certain countries in the Middle East and Africa. It says this would help stop Germany’s practice of sending migrants who have illegally crossed the border back to Poland.
The proposal comes amid renewed debate over how to tackle migration, with the Polish government on Tuesday announcing the reintroduction of controls on Poland’s borders with Germany and Lithuania in an effort to prevent the “uncontrolled flow of migrants”.
After Prime Minister Donald Tusk had announced the border controls, the head of PiS’s parliamentary caucus, Mariusz Błaszczak, said that the government’s actions were “too little, too late”.
“This crisis has been going on for months,” he continued. “This issue requires far-reaching action.”
Błaszczak said that PiS would submit a bill to parliament introducing a temporary ban on entry to Poland for third-country nationals from “specific countries outside Europe…whose citizens illegally cross borders”.
Previously, on Monday, PiS party leader Jarosław Kaczyński had called for an “immediate ban on entry to the territory of Poland for people from the Middle East and North Africa”.
PiS has not yet specified which Middle Eastern and African countries would be included in its proposed ban. It says they would be selected based on analysis of data showing which nationalities most often cross borders illegally or are transferred to Poland from Germany.
A government information campaign discouraging people from trying to illegally enter Poland was recently launched in Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Iraq, Pakistan and Egypt, countries from which Poland has identified the largest numbers of people crossing the border from Belarus.
Since 2021, tens of thousands of migrants and asylum seekers – mainly from Asia and Africa – have tried to enter Poland from Belarus, with the encouragement and assistance of the Belarusian authorities.
In response, Poland has heavily fortified its eastern border with physical barriers and electronic monitoring. The government also recently banned asylum claims by people crossing from Belarus. Those measures have led to a dramatic decline in the numbers entering via that route.
In his remarks on Tuesday, Błaszczak made clear, however, that PiS’s proposed entry ban was designed to address the issue that has recently caused most controversy, which is Germany’s policy of sending back to Poland thousands of migrants who crossed the Polish-German border illegally.
Many of those sent back are Ukrainians. Others are non-Europeans, often from Asia and Africa, who have either claimed asylum in Poland – and therefore must remain there while their applications are processed – or have simply passed through it after entering the EU irregularly.
“After the introduction of this [proposed] law, Polish border guards will be able to prevent citizens of these countries from entering our territory,” said Błaszczak. “So those who are today being transferred from Germany by the German authorities, or who are trying to cross from Germany to the Polish side, will not be able to do so.”
The migrant returns carried out by Germany take place under a combination of EU regulations, bilateral agreements with Poland, and the border controls that Berlin reintroduced in 2023. Earlier this year, Tusk declared that Poland may stop adhering to such agreements.
However, some Poles have sought to take matters into their own hands, organising self-declared “citizen patrols” – some of them hundreds strong – at the German border to monitor and prevent migrant returns.
Błaszczak said that PiS politicians will be visiting the German border to make clear that “we support the border defence movement”, which he described as “Polish patriots who took matters into their own hands when Donald Tusk’s state abdicated [its responsibilities]”.
He also pledged that the party “will provide support to those who are persecuted by the current authorities of our country” for undertaking such actions, reports the Polish Press Agency (PAP).

That's exactly what I did on the last job I applied to. I used a prompt along the lines of "I'm applying for a job. Here's the job description paste job description here's my resume paste resume. Please format it to best fit this job description. It knocked it out of the park, and filled it with all the stupid buzzwords I'd need to get through the application filter. The company is an AI company. If they have a problem with me using AI to make my resume better, they're missing the point.
Do whatever you need to do. Lie on your resume; use AI; automate job applications; rewrite your resume using any tool you can find. It’s a cutthroat environment and I don’t envy anyone trying to find a job right now. Someone I know has been trying for a year and a half and still nothing.
The tech capitalists have captured full control of the industry and they now hold all of the leverage. We don’t have the room we once did for bargaining.
Also, when you do a peer review, say nothing but positive things unless the person is vile. Support fellow working class folks. We can struggle together.

I should clarify that my post is mostly about the tech industry because that’s all I really know. It’s a field where you can get some leeway and figure shit out. If you’re a doctor, they’re gonna check your background and credentials pretty thoroughly and I don’t recommend lying in a field like that.
The online college I'm taking classes at has a whole long ass disclaimer about how using AI is forbidden. I'm positive the professors are using AI to grade. Bulletized strength and weaknesses that just parrot back what I wrote.
You need a job, so anything goes. Your only objective is to get hired, and you should do anything you can to achieve that. Corporations do whatever they can to brutally weed out applicants, so it's perfectly fair to defend your application in any way you can, including flat-out lying. If they don't check you close enough, and you get by and get hired, that's on them.
My partner applied for a job that said people with a certain training course were preferred. She said that she had that course even though she did not, she got an interview and ended up getting the job a few weeks back and starts next week.
She took the course after she got accepted, as it was a few hundred dollars that would have been a waste of money if she hadn't got the job.
Lying is acceptable to get employed within reason.
The job just said people had to be willing to take the course but people with it already were preferred so she just wrote in her application she had it.
It would have dropped her below other people to not have it so she kept herself on top.
She participated in the hiring process for other people at her previous job and when their postings listed certain courses as being provided if the applicant didn't have the courses, it was a lie. If you didn't have the course you were an automatic No.
My previous manager (same company, different team) was an idiot who somehow failed his way up and he gave way too much credit to courses and certificates. He would end up hiring the worst people (both from a team fit and a skills fit). The one candidate I pushed for that didn’t have any of that BS ended up being awesome.
Luckily enough people complained and a few people quit that he got banished to the shadow realm (he’s good at a completely different skillset which requires you to be stupidly annoying like he is, so they moved him to a team of…just himself).
Using AI to filter applicants must be fraught with legal risks. Discrimination, unknown biases in the model used, all kinds of things that risk screening someone out illegally. Hopefully someone loses a big lawsuit to scare the industry into sense.
I can't remember the court case per se but it involved a self driving car hitting a pedestrian I think.
My cursory search on Google seems to now show companies being held liable for AI hallucinations, with one court case currently pending where an AI chat bot encouraged a teen to commit suicide.

I feel like this is an example of how the core dev team running on an instance that basically just has 3 of the admins do more or less all the moderation for the entire site is not ideal. This type of feature is probably one of the most-requested pain points for most people who run most servers, but my guess is that it’s basically completely invisible to the .ml team why it would even be needed, because their model works fine for them, so why would they.
Of course they’ve got a right to work or not work on whatever they want, but if their goal is success and good moderation for most servers this type of scalability and teamwork enabling thing is super important.

So, I once watched The Lighthouse together with my then girlfriend remotely, being in a long distance relationship at the time. We used the same file, started at the same time and were in chat together.
The audio codec of this (of course 100% legal) file for some reason did not work with my VLC player properly. There were no voices. But it also wasn't just complete silence, some music and subtle, surreal sound effects came through. None of this was happening for my ex, btw, even though we had the same file.
Talking about the movie in chat and afterwards was fascinating, I only then realised it was, in fact, not a masterful, purposeful, stylistic choice: A major production not just in black and white, but as a silent movie. I also was able to get the essential things that happened and the important plot points, so that is also another point very much in favour of the film.
That is a possible explanation, although I think it was weirder than that, because I remember checking some "obvious" settings like that afterwards. I also re-encoded the file with VLC media player out of curiosity, where it should have just re-encoded whatever audio track it had, without adjusting it to a specific output device, and the resulting file then also had the same issue when played in SMPLayer (whereas the original worked in SMPlayer).
I might still have both files laying around on my NAS, but I myself at least don't really have the energy right now to go into a rabbit hole again years after the fact, and sharing them would be non-trivial.

As just a personal thing, the original mute watching was so surreal and unique, I enjoyed it more - solving the mystery of what is happening from what's shown visually alone (and some subdued music) - but that is a deeply subjective thing.

Honestly, I think most of Eggers' flims are probably still fantastic without dialogue. The atmosphere and visuals he creates tell the story all on their own most of the time.

I don't know if it's still a thing in the digital age, but having even just a few seconds of dead air back in the analogue broadcast days could mean that "silence detectors" all over the country would start going off and radio engineers everywhere would think there was some kind of problem with their station. I don't know if this is common knowledge but I hadn't found anything on the web (for Windows specifically) that stated that this was possible.
I kinda badly want to fully switch to Linux in the short term but wanted to first properly test how different distros feel at these specs (and maybe try some basic gaming too); maybe someone that wants to do the same can find this post useful (I hope this is the right community to post to).
To do this I used QEMU, and had to edit the source code and recompile it to enable 240hz. Forcing higher refresh rates is surprisingly not that hard, I only had to edit a single line of code (hw\display\edid-generate.c, line ~390, set '75000' to '240000'). So far Mint, Fedora and KDE Neon work perfectly at that refresh rate (after adjusting mouse input polling rates), then I added a couple other nice features like shared clipboard and mouse device toggling (I tested q2pro and it wouldn't work with absolute mouse coordinates, and relative mouse was a pain to use in normal desktop browsing, so I had to find a way to toggle them if I didn't want to reboot the VM every time).

Yep my intention is to do that as soon as I switch, honestly the biggest obstacle for me right now is gaming (I'm unfortunately on an nvidia gpu so I'd get like 20% or more performance penalty with the drivers currently shipped for most distros, a little too much for me) hopefully it'll get even better
I did exactly that when I switched to Linux a couple of years ago. Took around a week to setup, it runs well enough, but you lose the use of your main gpu under Linux that way. I tried lutris for gaming under linux and quickly realised the games run very well via wine. O in my opinion the qemu windows with gpu passtrough is not really worth the hassle nowadays. All games I tried work just as well via wine/proton.
A few days ago I asked about taking the big leap, but I use my PC for work in the arts (voice over, music, digital art, etc).
I've been playing around with Bitwig to replace Cubase and ideally Adobe Audition. It's... a learning curve but I'm willing to make it work if I can get everything about my PC lined up with Linux.
I then discovered Wine and Proton. So, they're basically bridges that allow you to use some Windows programs in Linux? I read they can use vst files with a bit of work, and people have had some success with Cubase, though Adobe is still right out but I'd love to get away from Adobe anyway. Also games??
Is there a difference between Wine and Proton or are they basically just different programs that do the same thing? The big leap might be more feasible than I thought if they do what I think they do.

Wine and proton are the same valve takes wine and adds some tweaks to it to work beter for games. Wine can work in a pinch but I wouldn't rely on it for your workflow as wine could always be playing catch up when your software updates versions.
Wine/Proton is a translation layer that translates windows system calls Linux system calls. So if wine/proton doesn't have a feature windows has for your knew version then it will break. That's okay for games but for something you need for work that can be a deal breaker. If you can switching to something Linux native will benefit you in the long run.
Wine can work in a pinch but I wouldn't rely on it
In this case I would say the other way round. Proton works in a container, so getting to the sound interface for example might be harder than just using Wine

install WineGUI
use it to install DirectX 9/10/11 and DirectX 12 packages
This instantly fixed the GUI not being responsive, tested with the new Nolly X
As a side note, a couple of things that might be handy for you:
Bottles is a GUI for running Wine things that might make it a bit easier to navigate. It's helped me out a few times.
Also there's an AppDB on the Wine site where you can search for specific software to find out how well it runs/tweaks that people have used etc.
ALSO yeah games are in a pretty good place on Linux nowadays. I have a Steam Deck and it runs a surprising amount of stuff, even things that aren't listed as being compatible. I think the main source of trouble is the online AntiCheat stuff, that's not always compatible with Linux (although sometimes those work too, I think it just depends on the game.) There's also protondb for checking which games work in Linux.
Proton is built on top of Wine in order to make sure games specifically work well.
You can check protondb.com/ before buying a game (with Steam or otherwise) to insure it works as expected. A lot will work with 0 tinkering but some might next extra command line parameters.
You might get the same result with Wine directly but Proton it doing everything it can to "hide" away those (hopefully small) challenges away from the final user, a gamer (like me) who wants to just sit down and play.
So... the heuristic is basically :

not games but Windows applications that somehow do not have a better open-source equivalent running on Linux? Wine
Edit: for the anecdote I wrote this reply on my SteamDeck, the gaming console by Valve coming with Steam, and Proton, and running Linux to... just play BUT I also use it to work while traveling. So yes, works like a charm!
Proton is designed for gaming and its a fork of Wine, designed for gaming contains alot of tools and patches for gaming compared to regular wine. Wine is designed for apps, but can be used for gaming.
I find using Lutris for gaming is easier, but there is also Bottles, both allow you to setup all the MS junk as needed per game, including options for using Wine's Proton if need be or desired.

As the Linux world increasingly moves towards adopting Wayland in place of X11, there is a serious risk that a third of a century's worth of FOSS desktops and windowing environments would get dropped and left behind. Wayback could prevent that happening, and retain the diversity of choice in GUIs while modernizing the tools upon which they run.
Why do I feel like narrowing down the options would not be that bad? The whole world of Linux is, IMO, in dire need of consolidation behind tried and tested, universally accepted technologies instead of endless number of choices for specific tastes. That is at least the case if Linux aims for desktops (like it now very much should and could with all the Win 11 mess).
There really can’t be half a dozen or more alternatives for any particular task. Two desktop environments for example has to be enough for 99% of users, same with package management systems etc. Otherwise the newbie user will only get scared and confused, or not be able to easily find support relevant to their ”version” of Linux.

You clearly have missed the entire point of Linux, which is the freedom to do with your machine as you like. The endless number of choices for specific tastes is the result of people having the choice to write their own thing.
When consolidation happens, when people say "make my choice for me, I can't make decisions" we end up with super constrained setups like MacOS, Windows 11 and stupid Gnome the way it is now; no choice, do it our way or not at all.
And the answer is still freedom. It's obvious in the plugins and addons for gnome that get it to do basic customizing you find in, say xfce as a toggle in the settings. You find it in the myriad of softwares written for windows and mac that let the user do what they want to do.
And I will likely not be the first to point out to you Linux doesn't "aim for desktops", linux isn't an organization the way ms and apple are. And it likely never will be.
Newbies will be scared and confused no matter what's in front of them.

Half the point is there are multiple ways to do things - and mind, Windows is like that too (you can get to some settings though the new Control Panel, the old Control Panel, the Regedit, the Powershell...). Just about the only thing in Windows you are forced only one vision of is the desktop itself, but as soon as you double-click an icon, all bets are off.
Also if what you want is getting behind "tried and tested, universally accepted technologies"... that's what sysvinit, ALSA, X11 and automake / build-essentials; no need for systemd, Pulseaudio, Wayland and Snaps. Pulseaudio was basically a stillborn deformed baby whereas I've never seen ALSA fail since 2002 (to the point even today I have to "fix" Flatpak not having audio on Pipewire unless Pulseaudio sits behind it by just seating both of them behind ALSA). I don't even have to begin on Wayland, it started as just vaporware; Systemd is largely an attempt to microsoft-ize Linux system management; and Snaps make me want to snap.
As for newbies... others have addressed the point but honestly, if someone gets scared and whiny at the "choose your starter" screen of the game, they're not gonna last any in a Pokémon game nor would I want them around whining about things they couldn't even be bothered to be here for.

You probably won't gain much right now, but as the development on Organic Maps has stalled, you might encounter bugs not being fixed, no new features etc. If it stays like that, you'd probably want to switch at some point.
It didnt for me. I installed Comaps from fdroid the other day, and it didnt come up on androidauto. I guess I could try installing it from the app store and see.

Traffic data kind of requires driver tracking data to be sent to the cloud, which usually goes against the philosophy of projects like this. Unless they're obtaining it from a third party, I doubt it'll be a feature they implement.
I've wondered if you could even if it was slowly build up a database of traffic infromation and have it be an opt in feature. Like I know in general in my city when things get busiser so I know when to avoid certain parts.

There is currently no traffic data in the map download, making travel time estimates inaccurate when there is traffic, which makes it not possible to rely on the app for arrival time.
Has there been any progress on the actual map data? Last time I tried Organic Maps the places I wanted to go didn't come up in search, and when I planned a road trip with it it planned the trip hours longer than Google maps.
That sounds like an issue with the underlying OpenStreetMap data that is used by Organic Maps (and CoMaps, and OsmAnd, and others). Map quality depends on where you are in the world and who is contributing to the maps there. If data is incomplete around you, you could contribute to it (but easier said than done, I know).
I can't say why the route would be hours longer than Google maps, but I've noticed OsmAnd~ tends to overestimate drive time for me (I think it overestimates delay from traffic lights). Or it could just be that calculating routes on your phone doesn't always give results as good as calculating routes on Google's servers.
God forbid you make a wrong turn with OSMAnd, the recalculating time is atrocious, and it's not unlikely that you're unable to stop, so it recalculates based on where you were, or in such a way to where you can't follow it's new guidance.
For me its much simpler to use and more straight forward. That being said, I feel like osmand allows you to be much more precise when selecting a route. But I havnt really used osmand that much

The chamber of Poland’s Supreme Court tasked with overseeing elections – but whose legitimacy is rejected by the Polish government and European courts – has passed a resolution validating the result of last month’s presidential vote in Poland, which was won by conservative opposition candidate Karol Nawrocki.
The decision was widely expected but has been mired in controversy over allegations of the miscounting of votes as well as questions over the status of the chamber itself, which was created by the former ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party that supported Nawrocki’s presidential candidacy.
In its decision, the chamber of extraordinary oversight and public affairs noted that, while it had confirmed 21 cases of irregularities during the election, “the identified violations did not affect the result”, in the words of judge Maria Szczepaniec.
The Supreme Court’s decision now paves the way for Nawrocki to be sworn into office in August, when he will replace outgoing President Andrzej Duda, whose second and final term is ending.
Poland’s presidential election run-off took place on 1 June. Nawrocki, the candidate supported by the national-conservative PiS, won 50.9% of the vote, defeating Rafał Trzaskowski – deputy leader of the centrist Civic Platform (PO), Poland’s main ruling party – who received 49.1%.
Subsequently, the Supreme Court had 30 days to consider complaints filed regarding the election (of which there were over 53,000 in total) and to confirm the validity of the result. As it met today to discuss the issue, supporters and opponents of Nawrocki gathered outside the court.
Some figures associated with the ruling coalition have suggested that, regardless of what happened today, next month’s swearing-in ceremony should not go forward due to question marks over vote-counting and the legality of the oversight chamber.
However, last week, the speaker of parliament, Szymon Hołownia, whose role it is to call the assembly at which the new president will be sworn in, said that, despite doubts over the chamber’s legality, he would accept its decision and swear in Nawrocki if the election was declared valid.
The oversight chamber was established under the former government that was led by PiS, which is now Poland’s main opposition party.
The chamber has been deemed illegitimate by both Polish and European courts due to being staffed entirely by judges nominated by the National Council of the Judiciary (KRS) after it was also overhauled by PiS in a manner that rendered it no longer independent of political influence.
The current government – a broad coalition ranging from left to centre-right that replaced PiS in office in December 2023 – also regards the chamber as unlawful and has tried to remove its power to validate the presidential election result. That effort was vetoed by PiS-aligned President Duda.
Last week, a group of 28 Supreme Court judges from other chambers jointly signed a letter declaring that the oversight chamber is illegitimate and therefore cannot issue a valid ruling. Even two judges from the chamber itself have questioned its legitimacy (and they today issued opinions dissenting from the main resolution).
On Monday, Adam Bodnar, the justice minister and prosecutor general, made a last-ditch appeal to the Supreme Court to transfer the decision on the validity of the election to another, legal, chamber. However, that request was denied.
Today, when Bodnar appeared before the oversight chamber, Szczepaniec pointed out that, after the 2023 parliamentary elections at which the current government came to power – and when Bodnar was himself elected to the Senate – he had not protested against the same chamber validating those results.
PiS has argued that the ruling coalition is only now disputing the legitimacy of the chamber because its candidate lost the presidential election. When Tusk’s coalition won the 2023 elections – as well as local and European elections in 2024 – it did not mount such protests, they note.
Speaking before the chamber today, Bodnar also accused it of dismissing almost 50,000 complaints about the presidential election without properly considering them.
As a result, “we still do not know what the election result is”, said Bodnar’s deputy, Jacek Bilewicz.
He emphasised that they were not “trying to reverse the election result, but we are of the opinion that the Supreme Court did not take all actions [necessary] to bring us close to [knowing] the actual result”.
In response, Szczepaniec noted that the complaints to which Bodnar was referring – which were based on templates shared by members of the ruling coalition, who had encouraged Poles to file protests – were “identical in content and do not concern the protesting party’s own specific and real interest”.
“The Supreme Court, after reviewing each protest, observes that the number of protests filed does not increase the weight of the single allegations included in them,” said Szczepaniec. “In such a case, the effect of scale is irrelevant.”
The oversight chamber’s decision to confirm the validity of the election was supported by the head of the National Electoral Commission (PKW), Sylwester Marciniak, who was appointed when PiS was in power.
Speaking before the chamber, Marciniak noted the PKW “did not find any violations of electoral law that could have influenced the voting results and the election outcome”, reports news website Wirtualna Polska.

How come when I try to create a new obs screen, it is black, whether or not i toggle off the visibility on Screen Capture and how do i get it to show the capture settings, like which monitor, or what portion of the screen, to be clear, the! first capture works, for some reason no other capture i try to create is letting me configure or display anything

There's a multitude of things going on here probably, but you need some debug logs to find. My guess is because your machine probably has multiple GPUs enabled, it's picking the inactive one, or you have multiple portal methods install and it's choosing the wrong.
I have the hyprland portals installed, and the kde ones, due to some issue I had to explicitly install them so idk if that will mess with the way applications handle it, assuming not, and yes I have two gpus, one dgpu, and one igpu, the dgpu is directly connected to my hdmi, does OBS stuggle with 2 gpus? still, that sounds like it would be a issue with capturing the monitor managed by my igpu. Not a reason to stop a second pipewire capture.
What logs do you need? I provided some from running OBS but i assume it isnt enough, what logs should I collect, or is there a flag i need to run with OBS
Missed your logs link, but there's some hints in there.
You have both an Intel GPU and Nvidia GPU in that laptop, and it's selecting your Intel while trying to use Nvidia compatible settings. So you need to try and force everything to either work on Nvidia, or everything to work on Intel. It can't do both without splitting the settings per GPU, which I don't think is an option in OBS.

Idk if OBS would actually respect the GPU being handed to it, or if it'll do something weird with screen capture, its weird per-gpu settings is not a option with OBS, if this is a OBS bug, i can file a bug report. Hopefully it can be resolved here.
Well in that log, it actually DOES use the right GPU. There are some other errors you have going on in there though, like you seem to have AV1 encoding selected somewhere in your settings, but this RTX 3070 doesn't support AV1 encoding (on the fly) AFAIK.
Try launching the app this same, setting all your hardware encoding stuff back to defaults, then see if you can get it working. In these logs it IS picking up the second pipewire display, so that's good, but launch this way again without AV1 enabled then upload the logs again and let's see what's happening.
To add RTX 30XX series doesn't support AV1 encode, only decode, so any AV1 encoding would have to be done on the CPU (better to use h.264 or HEVC for hardware encode in OBS)
