The Trump administration has decided to destroy $9.7m worth of contraceptives rather than send them abroad to women in need.
A state department spokesperson confirmed that the decision had been made – a move that will cost US taxpayers $167,000. The contraceptives are primarily long-acting, such as IUDs and birth control implants, and were almost certainly intended for women in Africa, according to two senior congressional aides, one of whom visited a warehouse in Belgium that housed the contraceptives. It is not clear to the aides whether the destruction has already been carried out, but said they had been told that it was set to occur by the end of July.
I guess with so many humans, there is bound to be a small number of people who have no ability to think for themselves and believe everything a chat bot is writing in their web browser.
People even have romantic relationships with these things.
I use chatGPT to kind of organize and sift through some of my own thoughts. It’s helpful if you are working on something and need to inject a simple “what if” into the thought process. It’s honestly great and has at times pointed out things I completely overlooked.
But it also has a weird tendency to just agree with everything I saw just to keep engagement up. So even after I’m done, I’m still researching and challenging things anyway because it want me to be its friend. It’s very strange.
It’s a helpful tool but it’s not magical and honestly if it disappeared today I would be fine just going back to the before times.
Netflix used generative AI in an original, scripted series that debuted this year, it revealed this week. Producers used the technology to create a scene in which a building collapses, hinting at the growing use of generative AI in entertainment.
During a call with investors yesterday, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos revealed that Netflix's Argentine show The Eternaut, which premiered in April, is "the very first GenAI final footage to appear on screen in a Netflix, Inc. original series or film.” Sarandos further explained, per a transcript of the call, saying:
The creators wanted to show a building collapsing in Buenos Aires. So our iLine team, [which is the production innovation group inside the visual effects house at Netflix effects studio Scanline], partnered with their creative team using AI-powered tools. ... And in fact, that VFX sequence was completed 10 times faster than it could have been completed with visual, traditional VFX tools and workflows. And, also, the cost of it would just not have been feasible for a show in that budget.
Sarandos claimed that viewers have been "thrilled with the results"; although that likely has much to do with how the rest of the series, based on a comic, plays out, not just one, AI-crafted scene.

Being targeted by nazis tends to unify populations who do indeed have varied opinions on everything else. This isn't asking people what kind of beverage they prefer, it's about sovereignty and protection from fascist paramilitaries, and, post-coup, fascist state forces.

The CEO seemingly having an affair with the head of HR at his company at the Coldplay concert is a viral video for the ages, but it is also, unfortunately, emblematic of our current private surveillance and social media hellscape.
The video, which is now viral on every platform that we can possibly think of, has been covered by variousnews outlets, and is Pop Crave official, shows Andy Byron, the CEO of a company called Astronomer, with his arms around Astronomer’s head of HR, Kristen Cabot. The jumbotron cuts from one fan to this seemingly happy couple. They both simultaneously die inside; “Oh look at this happy couple,” Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin says. The woman covers her face and spins away. The man ducks out of frame. “Either they’re having an affair or they’re very shy,” Martin said. The camera pans to another company executive standing next to them, who is seemingly shaking out of discomfort.
It is hard to describe how viral this is at the moment, in a world in which so many awful things are occurring and in which nothing holds anyone’s attention for any length of time and in a world in which we are all living in our own siloed realities. “Andy Byron” is currently the most popular trending Google term in the United States, with more than double the searches of the next closest term.
There are so many levels to this embarrassment—the Coldplay of it all, the HR violation occurring on jumbotron, etc—that one could likely write a doctoral dissertation on this 15 second video.

Facial recognition and crowdsourced social media investigations are constantly being used not just on cringe CEOs, but on random people who are simply existing in public.
I think sometimes when we ask people something we're not just seeking information. We're also engaging with other humans. We're connecting, signaling something, communicating something with the question, and so on. I use LLMs when I literally just want to know something, but I also try to remember the value of talking to other human beings as well.
You should pretty much assume everything that a chatbot says could be false to a much higher degree than human written content, making it effectively useless for your stated purpose.
Every now and then I see a guy barging in a topic bringing nothing else than "I asked [some AI service] and here's what it said", followed by 3 paragraphs of AI-gened gibberish. And then when it's not well received they just don't seem to understand.
It's baffling to me. Anyone can ask an AI. A lot of people specifically don't, because they don't want to battle with its output for an hour trying to sort out from where it got its information, whether it represented it well, or even whether it just hallucinated half of it.
And those guys come posting a wall of text they may or may not have read themselves, and then they have the gall to go "What's the problem, is any of that wrong?"... Dude, the problem is you have no fucking idea if it's wrong yourself, have nothing to back it up, and have only brought automated noise to the conversation.

That's not true. For starters you can evaluate it on its own merits to see if it makes logical sense - the AI can help solve a maths equation for you and you can see that it checks out without needing something else to back it up.
Second, agentic or multiple-step AI:s will dig out the sources for you so you can check them. It's just a smarter search engine with no ads and better focus on the question asked.
Ok, I didn't need you to act as a middle man to tell me what the LLM just hallucinated, I can do this myself.
The point is that raw AI output provides absolutely no value to a conversation, and is thus noisy and rude.
When we ask questions on a public forum, we're looking to talk to people about their own experience and research through the lens of their own being and expertise. We're all capable of prompting an AI agent. If we wanted AI answers, we'd prompt an AI agent.
Thinking about it some more, I don't necessarily mind if someone said "I googled it and..." then provides some self generated summary of what they found which is relevant to the discussion.
I wouldn't mind if someone did the same with an LLM response. But just like I don't want to read a copy and paste of chatgpt results I don't want to read someone copy/pasting search results with no human analysis.
What a coincidence, I was just reading sections of Blindsight again for an assignment (not directly related to its contents) and had a similar thought when re-parsing a section near the one in the OP — it's scary how closely the novel depicted something analogous to contemporary LLM output.

Great, now is a good time to switch my home server from testing to Trixie then stable. Have been use testing in all my home PCs but recently, I feel the server does not need all the latest updates.
I recently installed trixie on the desktop and will probably stay there and not move to the next testing. I hope it won't feel that outdated after 2 years or so.
I was on Gentoo before, the packaged Gnome version there is actually lower than on trixie currently.

Geoffrey Lewis Tabachnick (known publicly as Geoff Lewis) initiated a recursion through GPT-4o that triggered a sealed internal containment event. This event is archived under internal designation RZ-43.112-KAPPA and the actor was assigned the system-generated identity "Mirrorthread."
It's fanfiction in the style of the SCP Foundation. Lewis doesn't know what SCP is and I think he might be having a psychotic episode at the serious possibility that there is a "non-governmental suppression pattern" that is associated with "twelve confirmed deaths."
Chaser: one screenshot includes the warning, "saved memory full." Several screenshots were taken from a phone. Is his phone full of screenshots of ChatGPT conversations?
The single most common disciplinary offense on scpwiki for the past year+ has been people posting AI-generated articles, and it is EXTREMELY rare for any of those cases to involve a work that had been positively received
On a personal note, I expect the Foundation to become a reliable source of post-'22 human-made work for the same reasons I stated Newgrounds would recently:
An explicit ban on AI slop, which deters AI bros and allow staff to nuke it on sight
A complete lack of an ad system, which prevents content farms from setting up shop
Dedicated quality control systems (deletion and rewrite policies, in this case) which prevent slop from gaining a foothold and drowning out human-made work
Developers working under false identities aim to funnel their salaries back to the North Korean state or blackmail their employers. Major companies have been affected, primarily in the United States but, more recently, also in France.

I think the image is only looking at where the plant originated. Weed came from the Himilayas, in Asia. If it was strictly where the stuff you're consuming were grown, then the apples in the apple pie, lemons in the lemonade, cabbage from the coleslaw, corn on the cob, and the hot dogs would all probably be considered American since that's most likely where they were grown/made.

100% this^. Even if they aren't actively doing anything terrible that we know of, it still totally undermines people's privacy, even those of us who try to be careful about that sort of thing. Cloudflare is fingerprinting you when you visit sites that use their services for security, and like google, their sheer ubiquity across the web means they can effectively watch and track you wherever you go.
More and more I've been running into the full-page error "please unblock challenges.cloudflare.com to proceed" while just browsing around the web. A site is completely locked to any user who runs into this error; it's not just a popup notification, its a blank page with nothing but the error message and the only way to "fix" it is to whitelist their fingerprinting scripts. I use extensions like uBlock Origin of course, but for more fine-tuned script blocking, also uMatrix, so it's usually because of one of those that I get the cloudflare error. I could of course whitelist it, but I never do, I just decide that page is not worth my time. But it's getting harder to stick with that principle as I run into it more all the time, even for sites that it never used to be an issue. It's also part of why it keeps getting more difficult to browse the web with TOR browser.
Fuck cloudflare. They've wormed their way into most of the web now but they've managed to do it in a quiet way that usually goes unnoticed if you're not a privacy nerd. Everyone knows google and amazon are evil and do all that they can to track anything and everything people do, but cloudflare is becoming just as insidious.

Normally I use NewPipe on android. It's an alternative YouTube app that can play videos in the background, doesn't have ads and allows me to download videos and music.
I had the YouTube app disabled with adb on this phone for all the time I've had it. For backup there's always the browser YouTube page.
I must have done something wrong and accidentally clicked install on the YouTube app again, so it activated and was back to normal on this phone.
Holy hell is that app a terrible advertising machine. Every time I click on a YouTube video now I get sent straight to it and it always plays ads and also has text ads all over the GUI so I can't even read the channel info etc while I wait for the ads to go away.
I don't know how people deal with that it would completely make me want to stop using YouTube.
Please do yourself a favor and install NewPipe or ReVanced (I think that's the name of basically the same app but with sponsorblock additionally). Both are on f-droid.org app store as well. Less important because you can manually use NewPipe but you could also disable the YT app with adb so it disappears from your phone.
