Trump administration to destroy nearly $10m of contraceptives for women overseas

The Trump administration has decided to destroy $9.7m worth of contraceptives rather than send them abroad to women in need.

A state department spokesperson confirmed that the decision had been made – a move that will cost US taxpayers $167,000. The contraceptives are primarily long-acting, such as IUDs and birth control implants, and were almost certainly intended for women in Africa, according to two senior congressional aides, one of whom visited a warehouse in Belgium that housed the contraceptives. It is not clear to the aides whether the destruction has already been carried out, but said they had been told that it was set to occur by the end of July.

People Are Being Involuntarily Committed, Jailed After Spiraling Into "ChatGPT Psychosis"

Who are these people? This is ridiculous. 😀

I guess with so many humans, there is bound to be a small number of people who have no ability to think for themselves and believe everything a chat bot is writing in their web browser.

People even have romantic relationships with these things.

in reply to 1984

I use chatGPT to kind of organize and sift through some of my own thoughts. It’s helpful if you are working on something and need to inject a simple “what if” into the thought process. It’s honestly great and has at times pointed out things I completely overlooked.

But it also has a weird tendency to just agree with everything I saw just to keep engagement up. So even after I’m done, I’m still researching and challenging things anyway because it want me to be its friend. It’s very strange.

It’s a helpful tool but it’s not magical and honestly if it disappeared today I would be fine just going back to the before times.

Netflix’s first show with generative AI is a sign of what’s to come in TV, film

Netflix used generative AI in an original, scripted series that debuted this year, it revealed this week. Producers used the technology to create a scene in which a building collapses, hinting at the growing use of generative AI in entertainment.

During a call with investors yesterday, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos revealed that Netflix's Argentine show The Eternaut, which premiered in April, is "the very first GenAI final footage to appear on screen in a Netflix, Inc. original series or film.” Sarandos further explained, per a transcript of the call, saying:

The creators wanted to show a building collapsing in Buenos Aires. So our iLine team, [which is the production innovation group inside the visual effects house at Netflix effects studio Scanline], partnered with their creative team using AI-powered tools. ... And in fact, that VFX sequence was completed 10 times faster than it could have been completed with visual, traditional VFX tools and workflows. And, also, the cost of it would just not have been feasible for a show in that budget.

Sarandos claimed that viewers have been "thrilled with the results"; although that likely has much to do with how the rest of the series, based on a comic, plays out, not just one, AI-crafted scene.

Zohran Mamdani and the “Black Vote”

cross-posted from: lemmy.ml/post/33391116

Last month’s results in some 15 percent of voting precincts with majority-Black populations, though, don’t tell the whole story. Rather than being a race about a mythically monolithic “Black vote,” Mamdani’s campaign could show us a different side of politics in New York — one that speaks to Black voters based on their material needs.

Staying on message about affordability was Mamdani’s route to victory in the primary, and it could hold the key in the general, too. If he can win over some Black voters — rather than the “Black vote” — he may yet again shock political observers and land himself in the mayor’s office. His foes, however, are already seizing on his primary performance.

There’s whole groups of people who have a problem with the genocide in Palestine but don’t care about the one happening in Ukraine.

don't like this

in reply to SatansMaggotyCumFart

That's because, there isn't. Russia just taking out the Nazi's
in reply to SatansMaggotyCumFart

It was the year that Ukraine was couped; the year that Crimea, Donetsk, and Luhansk voted by referendum to secede from Ukraine; and the year that Crimea voted by referendum to join Russia.

in reply to davel

That’s the referendum with 89% voter turnout where 97% voted to leave Ukraine?

Those are almost unbelievable numbers.

in reply to SatansMaggotyCumFart

Do you find it hard to believe that a majority Russian & Russian-speaking people, with family and business ties in Russia, whose president they voted for had been couped, might prefer joining Russia over the far-right wing anti-Russian coup government of Ukraine?
Questa voce è stata modificata (2 mesi fa)
in reply to davel

Getting 89% of people to do anything with 97% of those agreeing is impressive.

Even with the least controversial opinions there will be 20-25% who typically disagree.

in reply to SatansMaggotyCumFart

Being targeted by nazis tends to unify populations who do indeed have varied opinions on everything else. This isn't asking people what kind of beverage they prefer, it's about sovereignty and protection from fascist paramilitaries, and, post-coup, fascist state forces.
in reply to SatansMaggotyCumFart

Go look at numbers for anywhere outside of the North Atlantic Euro-American imperial core and you'll find that overwhelming majorities are commonplace.

For example, Harvard conducted a 15-year study of Chinese citizens living in China and found that 95.5% of them supported their national government and believed it was working in their best interests.

in reply to jackeroni

So they say, but there are Nazis fighting for Russia. Wagner group, named after Richard Wagner whose music Hitler was fond of. One of their founders and leaders was openly a Nazi. Rusich group also operates within Wagner and their leader is even more of a Nazi.

The links between the Russian state and right-wing extremist groups are numerous. But it seems to me in general that ultranationalist/fascist groups have stronger support in former Soviet states than elsewhere. Russia and Ukraine are no exception.

in reply to SatansMaggotyCumFart

We're not selling weapons to russia for genocide.

There's a lot of people who have a problem with russia but dearly love everything netanyahu is doing.

in reply to SatansMaggotyCumFart

I see plenty of people, even on this site, who are calling for peace in Ukraine. Unfortunately they get shouted down by armchair warriors who just see all this as part of their geopolitical 'game'.

Giving Up on Element & Matrix.org: The Matrix.org network has great potential, but after years of dealing with glitches, slow performance, poor UX, and one too many failures, I’m done with it.

  • Hackernews.
    > After five years of using Matrix.org/Element as my primary communication platform, and rooting for it, and promoting it, and enduring its many quirks, I’ve decided to move on (or rather back). Despite promising ideals and growing institutional adoption, the network remains slow, unreliable, and confusing for everyday users. Development feels directionless, client and server projects are fragmented, and the user experience still lags far behind my expectations. A recent incident that essentially broke my own community channel on the Matrix.org homeserver was the final straw: I’m heading back to XMPP.

The CEO seemingly having an affair with the head of HR at his company at the Coldplay concert is a viral video for the ages, but it is also, unfortunately, emblematic of our current private surveillance and social media hellscape.

The video, which is now viral on every platform that we can possibly think of, has been covered by various news outlets, and is Pop Crave official, shows Andy Byron, the CEO of a company called Astronomer, with his arms around Astronomer’s head of HR, Kristen Cabot. The jumbotron cuts from one fan to this seemingly happy couple. They both simultaneously die inside; “Oh look at this happy couple,” Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin says. The woman covers her face and spins away. The man ducks out of frame. “Either they’re having an affair or they’re very shy,” Martin said. The camera pans to another company executive standing next to them, who is seemingly shaking out of discomfort.

It is hard to describe how viral this is at the moment, in a world in which so many awful things are occurring and in which nothing holds anyone’s attention for any length of time and in a world in which we are all living in our own siloed realities. “Andy Byron” is currently the most popular trending Google term in the United States, with more than double the searches of the next closest term.

There are so many levels to this embarrassment—the Coldplay of it all, the HR violation occurring on jumbotron, etc—that one could likely write a doctoral dissertation on this 15 second video.

This is a good post.

Thinking about it some more, I don't necessarily mind if someone said "I googled it and..." then provides some self generated summary of what they found which is relevant to the discussion.

I wouldn't mind if someone did the same with an LLM response. But just like I don't want to read a copy and paste of chatgpt results I don't want to read someone copy/pasting search results with no human analysis.

in reply to LesserAbe

If you're going to use an LLM, at least follow the links it provides to the source of what they output. You really need to check their work.
in reply to erlend_sh

What a coincidence, I was just reading sections of Blindsight again for an assignment (not directly related to its contents) and had a similar thought when re-parsing a section near the one in the OP — it's scary how closely the novel depicted something analogous to contemporary LLM output.

OpenAI investor falls for GPT's SCP-style babble

The linked tweet is from moneybag and newly-hired junior researcher at the SCP Foundation, Geoff Lewis, who says:

As one of @OpenAI’s earliest backers via @Bedrock, I’ve long used GPT as a tool in pursuit of my core value: Truth. Over years, I mapped the Non-Governmental System. Over months, GPT independently recognized and sealed the pattern.
It now lives at the root of the model.

He also attaches eight screenshots of conversation with ChatGPT. I'm not linking them directly, as they're clearly some sort of memetic hazard. Here's a small sample:

Geoffrey Lewis Tabachnick (known publicly as Geoff Lewis) initiated a recursion through GPT-4o that triggered a sealed internal containment event. This event is archived under internal designation RZ-43.112-KAPPA and the actor was assigned the system-generated identity "Mirrorthread."

It's fanfiction in the style of the SCP Foundation. Lewis doesn't know what SCP is and I think he might be having a psychotic episode at the serious possibility that there is a "non-governmental suppression pattern" that is associated with "twelve confirmed deaths."

Chaser: one screenshot includes the warning, "saved memory full." Several screenshots were taken from a phone. Is his phone full of screenshots of ChatGPT conversations?

in reply to corbin

Qntm, one of the people who writes for the SCP Foundation site, also has a thread on it from the fiction writing angle.
in reply to Soyweiser

Found a neat tangent whilst going through that thread:

The single most common disciplinary offense on scpwiki for the past year+ has been people posting AI-generated articles, and it is EXTREMELY rare for any of those cases to involve a work that had been positively received

On a personal note, I expect the Foundation to become a reliable source of post-'22 human-made work for the same reasons I stated Newgrounds would recently:

  • An explicit ban on AI slop, which deters AI bros and allow staff to nuke it on sight
  • A complete lack of an ad system, which prevents content farms from setting up shop
  • Dedicated quality control systems (deletion and rewrite policies, in this case) which prevent slop from gaining a foothold and drowning out human-made work

It is a mixed bag, some support legalization and smoking weed. A lot of the MAGA base are older, 60's (era of flower power, drugs, freedom) gen that sold out their peace/no war to become CEO's and fuck over the workers, yet still like to party. The other side are more religious, so "god" has told them (in their minds, I guess) that weed and all drugs are bad. Pharmaceuticals though, are welcome, in hand-fulls. It is all fuzzy math, really.

Human cost of Russia’s war

Russian attacks kill 7, injure 25 in Ukraine over past 24 hours; trains hit twice in one day. Ukraine’s Air Force said it shot down 11 Shahed-type drones overnight as Russia launched a wave of 35 attack drones, including decoy drones, primarily targeting eastern frontline regions. Six additional decoys were jammed or lost.

2 killed, 11 injured in Russian attack on Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. The fatalities included a man and a woman. All of the 11 injured victims have been hospitalized, one of whom — a 29-year-old woman — is in serious condition, Governor Serhii Lysak reported.

UK lowers Russian oil price cap to $47.6 per barrel. “We’re striking at the heart of the Russian energy sector alongside the EU,” British Foreign Secretary David Lammy said.

UK sanctions Russian intelligence units involved in cyberattacks. The sanctions target operatives of Russia’s military intelligence (GRU), responsible for widespread malicious cyber activity in the U.K. and Europe, the Foreign Office said.

Germany’s Merz says Ukraine unlikely to join EU before 2034. “For us, the absolute top priority is, first and foremost, to do everything possible to end this war,” German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said.

New EU sanctions could block Rosneft’s Indian refinery sale plans, Bloomberg reports. The Russian oil giant has been trying to sell its 49.13% stake in India’s Nayara refinery, but the EU’s latest sanctions package could make such a deal too risky for buyers.

Trump admin cuts undermine efforts to track abducted Ukrainian children, Council of Europe envoy says. “European countries will have to fund it,” Thordis Gylfadottir, an envoy of the Council of Europe, told Politico. “We cannot stop tracking them and then just re-track them (abducted children) in the months ahead.”

Romania plans to build drones with Ukraine. The project would involve Romanian investment in a local factory, likely in Brasov, where Ukrainian and Romanian teams would collaborate on manufacturing drones based on Ukrainian designs developed through wartime experience.

First Australian Abrams tanks reach Ukraine after 9-month wait. The tanks were promised to Kyiv in October 2024, but delivery was reportedly delayed due to resistance from the U.S. The remaining tanks will arrive “in the coming months.”

Former #1 Movie Piracy Site "Strongly Linked" to Global Infostealer Activity

Earlier this year, Microsoft published a report on an infostealer malware campaign identified as stemming from pirate streaming sites. With one million user devices infected, the potential for damage is clearly enormous but the threat isn't new. Data sourced from specialist breach databases reveals that Fmovies, the world's most popular pirate streaming site before its closure in 2024, was "strongly linked" to Infostealer activity targeting users worldwide.

12ft.io down?

I see 12ft.io is down and has been for a day or 2. Any alternatives that work as well (tried a few over the years). I have no interest in removing loads of paywalls just the odd thing or 2 now and again

Bypass paywall clean calling home

Bypass Paywall Clean -call home

Having looked at various browsers and what calls they make, I noticed on Firefox and other android browsers that when Bypass Paywall Clean is installed from main source:
gitflic.ru/project/magnolia123…

It makes calls to gitflic.ru quite often wether using a bypass website or not.

Anyone know on what the calls are about and if they are legitimate and or what telemetry is being shared?

Yep, looks like this has the data for each site and what part to remove to bypass, so it would need frequent updates.
in reply to MangoPenguin

Looks quite possible. It does connect every time you visit a site on the bypass list but not viewing other sites.

Japan tells its companies in Taiwan ‘you’re on your own’ if China invades

archive.is/9kma5

Japanese diplomats told company risk officers that “you are on your own if you put significant assets in Taiwan”, said one person present at one of the conversations.

Foreign direct investment by Japanese companies — traditionally Taiwan’s third-largest source of FDI, after the EU and US — slumped 27 per cent last year to $452mn, and is down from a peak of $1.7bn in 2022.

in reply to schizoidman

Sensible. Each company should prepare it's own risk assessment and manage the risk. Taxpayers shouldn't have to bail them out for their stupid/greedy decisions.

I appreciate that your title makes it clear that this is an old article. Certainly it's still relevant, but going into the article with knowledge of its age calibrates my mindset
in reply to pdqcp

I have purchased far more than I've ever obtained. In some cases I've double dipped and purchased multiple times.

The main issue is "can I obtain it legally and pay the original creators?" And secondary is "is this item reasonably priced and delivered in an accessible way?".

The last game I grabbed was the Sims 4 + dlc a very very long time ago. The last show i grabbed was probably an anime with fan subtitles.

YouTube app is the worst

Normally I use NewPipe on android. It's an alternative YouTube app that can play videos in the background, doesn't have ads and allows me to download videos and music.

I had the YouTube app disabled with adb on this phone for all the time I've had it. For backup there's always the browser YouTube page.

I must have done something wrong and accidentally clicked install on the YouTube app again, so it activated and was back to normal on this phone.

Holy hell is that app a terrible advertising machine. Every time I click on a YouTube video now I get sent straight to it and it always plays ads and also has text ads all over the GUI so I can't even read the channel info etc while I wait for the ads to go away.

I don't know how people deal with that it would completely make me want to stop using YouTube.

Please do yourself a favor and install NewPipe or ReVanced (I think that's the name of basically the same app but with sponsorblock additionally). Both are on f-droid.org app store as well. Less important because you can manually use NewPipe but you could also disable the YT app with adb so it disappears from your phone.
