Naah JS is fine, just use TypeScript!

TypeScript does not throw an error at compile time for accessing an out-of-bounds index. Instead, it assumes that the value could be one of the types defined in the array (in this case, 1 or 2) or undefined.

TypeScript automatically infers the type of a value accessed from an array, even if that access is out of bounds. It assumes that the value could be one of the defined types or undefined, which can lead to confusion if you expect stricter enforcement of valid indices.

I just spent the last 2 hours trying to understand why I was getting a valid type from something that shouldn't have been valid.

I think that the hate that JavaScript receives is well deserved, at least coming from Rust this is an absolute nightmare.

in reply to hperrin

To add to my own comment, I want to remind you that JavaScript was designed to power websites, and having an entire website break because an array didn’t have anything in it yet is probably worse than the alternative.

A lot of JS’ decisions actually make sense when you understand its history. That doesn’t mean it’s a great language, but it’s undeniably good at fulfilling its original purpose, making websites interactive in myriad different browser implementations.

in reply to hperrin

Yes you're probably right, I definitely have bias and the time spent tryna fix the bug influenced this..

Thanks

This study on the impact of AI on perceived developer productivity is making the rounds. I find @simon, Quentin Anthony, and @gergelyorosz’s take the most interesting.

My personal theory is that getting a significant productivity boost from LLM assistance and AI tools has a much steeper learning curve than most people expect.

news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4…

It’s super easy to get distracted in the downtime while LLMs are generating. The social media attention economy is brutal, and I think people spend 30 mins scrolling while “waiting” for their 30-second generation.

x.com/QuentinAnthon15

I cannot stay in the zone when using a time-saving AI coding tool; I need to do something else while code is being generated, so context switches are forced, and each one slows me down. It’s a distraction.

Cursor makes developers less effective?

I can confirm the danger of getting distracted when working with AI. I’ve learnt and continue to learn how to best leverage Cursor in my daily work. I know its impact on my productivity is very different depending on the projects I work on. I know I must use Cursor differently depending on the codebase I work with. I know I’m not as productive as I would like with some project types, because I haven’t found the best way to organize my work yet.

But I think the same was true when I worked without the help of AI.

The dangerously blurry line between wellness and medical tech

Let me catch you up. On July 15th, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sent Whoop a letter. In it, the FDA declared that Whoop — maker of a niche fitness tracker favored by elite athletes — had crossed a line. Its new Blood Pressure Insights feature, the regulator said, was being marketed to customers without undergoing the proper clearance process.

In response, Whoop pulled out the W word: wellness.

In the world of health and wearable tech, “wellness” is sort of like a “get out of jail free” card. Some advanced health features, like EKGs and atrial fibrillation notifications, require regulatory clearance before consumers can use them. These features could be interpreted as diagnostic in nature or prompt a person to make a medical decision. Others, like step tracking and blood oxygen measurements, don’t require FDA oversight at all. They’re simply meant to make living a healthy life easier by helping you visualize certain measurable markers. Those features fall under the wellness umbrella. They’re “just for fun.”

My 2.5 year old laptop can write Space Invaders in JavaScript now, using GLM-4.5 Air and MLX

It’s interesting how almost every model released in 2025 has specifically targeting coding. That focus has clearly been paying off: these coding models are getting really good now.

I still contend that this sort of task is uniquely positioned to show off LLMs. The idea that they'll turn into agents that can do real-world tasks remains a fantasy. Despite how impressive this is, they're losing money and have no real path to profitability.

Look up Ed Zitron's newsletter and podcast for more info on why the industry is a bubble. I'm genuinely impressed with this specific example, but our economy is gonna suffer when the bubble bursts.

Men freed from El Salvador mega-prison endured ‘state-sanctioned torture’, lawyers say

Venezuelans that the Trump administration expelled to El Salvador’s most notorious megaprison endured “state-sanctioned torture”, lawyers for some of the men have said, as more stories emerge about the horrors they faced during capacity.
in reply to MicroWave

I couldn't figure out why they sent them back, but my partner probably did. Trump didn't pay the bill. That's the only thing that makes sense.
in reply to pelespirit

The president of El Salvador also directly contradicted President Tiny Dick when Trump tried to claim he had no control over the fate of the people who were kidnapped and sent there. So having their government directly say that the US did, in fact, still have jurisdiction over those prisoners may have been a factor.

How SpaceX's rocket diplomacy backfired in the Bahamas

NASSAU, Bahamas, July 29 (Reuters) - When SpaceX was negotiating a deal with the Bahamas last year to allow its Falcon 9 rocket boosters to land within the island nation's territory, Elon Musk's company offered a sweetener: complimentary Starlink internet terminals for the country's defense vessels, according to three people familiar with the matter.

The rocket landing deal, unlocking a more efficient path to space for SpaceX's reusable Falcon 9, was then signed in February last year by Deputy Prime Minister Chester Cooper, who bypassed consultation with several other key government ministers, one of the sources and another person familiar with the talks said.

Reuters found no evidence that Cooper broke any laws or regulations in striking the deal with SpaceX, but the people said the quick approval created tension within the Bahamian government.

SpaceX's deal with the Bahamas, also included a $1 million donation to a University, where the company pledged to conduct quarterly seminars on space and engineering topics. The company must pay a $100,000 fee per landing, pursuant to the country's space regulations it enacted in preparation for the SpaceX activities.

musk makes more than that in single morning and this relatively tiny price tags reeks of corruption.

At Eleventh Hour, Enablers of Israel's Mass Starvation of Gaza Do 'Reputational Damage Control'

As Common Dreams reported this week, Integrated Food Security Phase Classification has said that 85% of people in Gaza are now in Phase 5 of famine, defined at "an extreme deprivation of food."

Organizer and attorney Aaron Regunberg said that instead of simply doing "reputational damage control by speaking up in these very last moments," powerful political leaders must "shut shit down."

”You want history books to not record you as an evil genocide supporter?" said Regunberg. "One speech now—after countless speeches condemning those who have been speaking out—ain't gonna cut it... You need to go to Gaza. You need to actually make an impact, NOW."

in reply to greenfire

Clinton didn't mention the Israeli blockade that has kept food from reaching Palestinians, more than 120 of whom have now died of starvation, or the at least $12.5 billion in military aid the U.S. has provided to Israel since the blockade first began in October 2023—in violation of U.S. laws prohibiting the government from giving military aid to countries that block humanitarian aid.

Well, yeah...

have you guys seen how people are unlocking xiaomi bootloaders nowstep 1: ask store to downgrade firmwarestep 2: before they relock the bootloader run away with your devicehttps://imgur.com/P4n0pcIhttps://imgur.com/8UWg5hv

'A distraction': Unrwa says Israeli and GHF claims over UN aid delivery are baseless

Right, cause as we all know, it was the UN that illegally boarded a ship in international waters and pretty much kidnapped it's crew just cause their efforts to get supplies into Gaza was topping the news cycle. Wait, no, that of course was Israel's doing.

Fuckin fascist assholes. I'm referring of course to that mission that Greta joined. But can't let compassion for the indigenous people of the land they are stealing overtake the news cycle cuz that makes it hard to convince people that Israel are the victims.

I cannot comprehend reacting with anger and hatred cause somebody is trying to get food to starving children, let alone the disgusting level of bigotry it takes to intentionally starve an entire population to death.

Judge dismisses DOJ lawsuit against Illinois, Chicago over ‘sanctuary city’ policies

A federal judge on Friday dismissed “in its entirety” the Trump administration’s lawsuit against Illinois, Cook County and the city of Chicago over “sanctuary city” policies that the Trump administration has said impede its efforts to crack down on undocumented immigrants.

U.S. District Judge Lindsay C. Jenkins for the Northern District of Illinois Eastern Division said the Trump administration “lacks standing” to invalidate the state, city and county laws that limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, adding in her ruling that “contrary to the United States’s arguments, the Sanctuary Policies here do not comparably regulate [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] operations or meddle with the contractual rights of private individuals working with ICE.”

"Illinois just beat the Trump Administration in federal court. Their case challenging the bipartisan TRUST Act was dismissed — unlike the President, we follow the law and listen to the courts,” Pritzker wrote in a post on X.

In February, the Trump administration sued Illinois and Chicago for interfering with the federal immigration crackdown, arguing that the city’s Welcoming City ordinance and the Illinois Trust Act reflects “an intentional effort to obstruct the Federal Government’s enforcement of federal immigration law and to impede consultation and communication between federal, state, and local law enforcement officials that is necessary for federal officials to carry out federal immigration law and keep Americans safe.”

The lawsuit also named Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker (D), Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson (D), the Cook County Board of Commissioners, Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling, and Cook County Sheriff Thomas Dart.

Fuck yeah Illinois and fuck yeah Chicago for standing together and standing up to fascist takeover. And fuck yeah rule of law for reminding us this is still the United States of America (at least in some parts of the country)

Because Fascism Is an American export. We are not having the CPAC here because it's homegrown. American conservatives are actively coming here and doing political interventionism. If China did that in America The military would be doing arrests. And every time Charlie Kirk puts a foot in my country i wish the bastard was arrested and sent to jail along with the traitors siding with these clowns.
in reply to Ilixtze

but if you're so much better than America why are:

  1. your citizens falling for the propaganda
  2. your politicians succumbing to corruption

your cognitive dissonance is showing. also, fascism isn't an American export. it's a Russian export.

show us Americans how to protest and stop a fascist takeover! don't be weak like us Americans.

in reply to GreenKnight23

Who are you arguing against? Who said "We're just so much better than America"? Seems like a straw man. People say what they don't want the USA to export fascism to their country and some Americans hear "We're better than America" because some Americans react weirdly to criticism of their country.

Fascism is a danger everywhere. The USA is spreading it everywhere. A lot of people understandably don't like this.

sounds like a red herring to me. I'm not arguing against a person, I'm pointing out the hypocrisy of non-Americans on lemmy that say "Americans bad! Europe is better!" Americans aren't the problem, our government is. And even if it was Americans, wouldn't the rest of the world that claims to be better than America not have problems with fascism spreading if they were as good as they claim?

that said, the US is simply a tool being used by Putin through Trump to spread influence everywhere.

in reply to GreenKnight23

Pretty sure fascism should be considered Italian given that whole mussolini guy.
in reply to Alaik

and it's literally the source of the word as a political movement, lol.
in reply to GreenKnight23

Lets dismantle this part by part:

1: The one who came up with these idea that America needs to model itself after other countries is you. I don't care about America. I want America to stop pressuring other governments to model themselves after them. I want American foreign policy to stop intervening with other countries and in particular the country where I live.

2: It is rich that you are saying with a straight face that our citizens are falling to propaganda when your citizens have voted for two terms for a huckster, sex offender mentally challenged, child molester.

3: There is a latent right wing coalition in my country that is home grown, yes we had years of political tumult. We have fascists down here and everyone does! We don't have a secret to subdue them we have a fragile emerging resistance that has won a couple of elections: We just had presidential elections a few years back; and the very unpopular right wing candidate suffered a devastating loss despite all the very suspicious financial and media support they had. Which means that the population hasn't entirely "succumbed to propaganda." For our next elections, the republicans are already grooming a couple of candidates for our country. One of them is a Catholic conservative that has been spotted with Elon Musk and the rest of ghouls more than a couple of times.

Here is one of the weasels Eduardo Verastegui doing the Nazi salute on the American Financed CPAC:

4: My country has very little contact with Russia. The ultra right wing coalition of my country does not meet with Putin, They meet with Conservatives from the USA. Maybe you are trying to impose your own biases on me. Personally I am frustrated that my government cannot do something about this bastards coming here. At least not for now, while they have all the might of American military power and economy backing them.

5: Lastly. I think America is hopeless. Your arguments are a good case study for why I feel you people are hopeless. Even in your failures and aggression there is a deep seated narcissism where It's our turn to "show you the way"; We don't have to show you shit. We don't owe you anything. You have allowed the plutocracy poisoning your country to fester and I believe it is a problem that runs deeper than just Trump. You will keep shifting the blame, acting all high and mighty and fail to address the fact that you don't even have a democracy anymore. And in the spirit of American exceptionalism even as those systemic issues are reaching critical mass you will continue to try and shift the blame. Nobody improves by neglecting self reflection. If Putin is pulling the strings of your right wing grifters, he has been enabled by the mounting of corruption that eliminated any legal checks and balances for your billionaire and political class. America has lost the ability to enforce it's laws on it's Oligarchy and you are surprised that an international web of criminals are eager to make connections with that dangerous emerging power?

In the end this feels like a conversation about wounded national Ego. "Hey man don't talk about my shortcomings, you all have it much worse."

Gaza running out of specialised food to save malnourished children

Gaza is on the brink of running out of the specialised therapeutic food needed to save the lives of severely malnourished children, United Nations and humanitarian agencies say.

”We are now facing a dire situation, that we are running out of therapeutic supplies,” Salim Oweis, a spokesperson for Unicef in Amman, Jordan, told Reuters on Thursday, saying supplies of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF), a crucial treatment, would be depleted by mid-August if nothing changed.

”That’s really dangerous for children as they face hunger and malnutrition at the moment,” he added.

Oweis said Unicef had only enough RUTF left to treat 3,000 children. In the first two weeks of July alone, Unicef treated 5,000 children facing acute malnutrition in Gaza.

Nutrient-dense, high-calorie RUTF supplies, such as high-energy biscuits and peanut paste enriched with milk powder, are critical for treating severe malnutrition.

”Most malnutrition treatment supplies have been consumed and what is left at facilities will run out very soon if not replenished,” a World Health Organization spokesperson said on Thursday.
