Any Russian ones?

in reply to daydrinkingchickadee

Russia is a country actively occupying parts of ~~two~~ three much smaller countries. Where the president is wanted by the ICC for war crimes. Where the government has frequently and provably lied.

There should be a counterbalance to the approved government narrative, but Russian state-backed newspapers are absolutely the last source that should fill that role.

ICE Adds Random Person to Group Chat, Exposes Details of Manhunt in Real-Time

ICE Adds Random Person to Group Chat, Exposes Details of Manhunt in Real-Time

Members of a law enforcement group chat including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other agencies inadvertently added a random person to the group called “Mass Text” where they exposed highly sensitive information about an active search for a convicted attempted murderer seemingly marked for deportation, 404 Media has learned.

The texts included an unredacted ICE “Field Operations Worksheet” that includes detailed information about the target they were looking for, and the texts showed ICE pulling data from a DMV and license plate readers (LPRs), according to screenshots of the chat obtained and verified by 404 Media. The person accidentally added to the group chat is not a law enforcement official or associated with the investigation in any way, and said they were added to it weeks ago and initially thought it was a series of spam messages.

The incident is a significant data breach and operational security failure for ICE, which has ramped up arrest efforts across the U.S. as part of the Trump administration’s mass deportation efforts. The breach also has startling similarities to so-called Signal Gate, in which a senior administration official added the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic to a group chat that contained likely classified information. These new ICE messages were MMS, or Multimedia Messaging Service messages, meaning they weren’t end-to-end encrypted, like texts sent over Signal or WhatsApp are.

“Going to need to roll out at 1000,” one of the messages, sent at 09:25 a.m. on Wednesday to the group, called “Mass Text,” reads.

“Copy. We can break it down at 10,” comes the reply.

💡
Do you want to contact me securely? I would love to hear from you. Using a non-work device, you can message me securely on Signal at joseph.404 or send me an email at joseph@404media.co.

404 Media has verified that one of the members of the chat is an ICE official, and another appears to be from the U.S. Marshals Service.

The person accidentally added to the group chat, which appears to contain six people, said they had no idea why they had received these messages, and shared screenshots of the chat with 404 Media. 404 Media granted the person anonymity to protect them from retaliation.

“At first I thought it was just another series of spam messages like I get all the time from home improvement, car insurance , business loans, etc. Then I saw the rap sheet and license plate numbers and was like WTAF,” the person said in an online chat.

Screenshots of the messages. Redactions by 404 Media.

A DHS official not affiliated with the group chat told 404 Media, “This breach strikes me as indicative of the current carelessness of officers. They're concerned about pumping up arrest numbers, not about operating with the level of care and rigor we should expect from law enforcement officials.” 404 Media granted the source anonymity as they weren’t permitted to speak to the press.

404 Media only obtained text messages from the group sent on Wednesday and only learned of the issue at that time. They start early in the morning with one of the participants, which 404 Media has identified as an ICE official, sending a screenshot of the ICE field operations worksheet. This document names the target, lays out their criminal history, and includes personal information such as their Social Security Number, country of citizenship, and driver’s license number.

The target is a person who was previously convicted of attempted murder according to the document, and a search of the ICE Online Detainee Locator System returned no results.

Nearly an hour later, another member of the group replies with a series of license plates. The name registered to that number matches that of a U.S. Marshals Criminal Investigator, according to a freely available phone lookup tool and LinkedIn searches.

Screenshots of the messages. Redactions by 404 Media.

“Running those plates,” the ICE officer then replies. “In the mean time he has two vehicles,” the ICE officer adds, before uploading two photos of car registration data which appear to come from a DMV; one of the photos shows a PDF filename which includes “DMV.” ICE is able to access DMV data in many circumstances. The respective DMV for the state this investigation took place in acknowledged a request for comment but did not provide a response in time for publication.

Immediately after, the ICE official wrote “no LPR hits since March.” LPR cameras are made by various companies and are stationed all across the United States. These cameras typically scan any vehicles driving by them, recording the vehicle’s license plate, model, and color, and makes a timestamped record of where that car, and by extension person, was. For example, more than 9,000 ICE agents had access to an LPR database run by Vigilant Solutions, according to records the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) obtained in 2019. 404 Media also revealed that local police were tapping into Flock cameras on behalf of ICE and for immigration enforcement, sometimes in violation of the law.

“It’s possible it’s still a connected address. Could be family. The last name matches the female co-reg on one of his vehicles,” the ICE official writes, appearing to refer to some of the data he’s pulled up.

“Copy,” another participant replies.

“Ok I’ll call you,” another says.

By the time the chat members say they’re going to “roll out at 1000,” appearing to mean they will move at 10am, the ICE official says “I’ll have someone sit and try and get a pattern of life/pid.” Pattern of life is a general term law enforcement and intelligence agencies sometimes use to describe where someone may live, go to work, or spend their time.

The source who was accidentally added to the group chat said they haven’t received any more messages since then.

Neither DHS or the U.S. Marshals Service responded to requests for comment.

Recently ICE officials have raided incorrect addresses; potentially violated court orders banning the agency from racial profiling people at Home Depots; detained U.S. citizens (including for days without water); and deported U.S. citizen children, one of which had cancer, with their families to Honduras, all while aggressively rounding up undocumented people many of whom have no criminal record and denying due process to some. Around half the people in ICE detention, nearly 30,000 people, do not have criminal records, according to the Deportation Data Project.

Previously senior administration officials gave ICE a quota of 3,000 arrests a day. The administration has since claimed that no such quota exists.

With its new budget injection and overarching mass deportation goal, ICE is about to go on a social media ad recruiting blitz, 404 Media previously reported. On Tuesday DHS said it had received more than 100,000 applications for roles at ICE. At the end of July, the agency said it had issued more than 1,000 tentative job offers since July 4.

The Russian delegation will include Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, Defense Minister Andrei Belousov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, and Russian Direct Investment Fund head Kirill Dmitriev.

Russia may be preparing to test nuclear-powered missile ahead of Trump talks, Reuters reports. Planet Labs imagery showed stacks of shipping containers, cranes, and a helicopter at the launch site, as well as two radar-equipped aircraft parked at Rogachevo military airfield since mid-July, Reuters reported.

July saw highest civilian casualties in Ukraine since 2022, UN says ahead of Trump-Putin summit. “Only the first three months after the Russian Federation launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine saw more killed and injured than in this past month,” said Danielle Bell, head of the U.N. human rights monitoring mission in Ukraine.

Russian attacks kill at least 8, injure 18 across Ukraine over past day. Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia launched 45 Shahed-type drones, other UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles), and two S-300/400 missiles overnight from several directions.

US sanctions Russian crypto exchange over cybercrime — day before Trump-Putin summit in Alaska. The U.S. Treasury Department has re-designated the Russian-linked cryptocurrency exchange Garantex Europe OU, accusing it of directly enabling ransomware gangs and other cybercriminals by processing over $100 million in illicit transactions since 2019.

  • Attempted, inner, and perceived speech have a shared representation in motor cortex
  • An inner-speech brain-computer interface (BCI) decodes general sentences with improved user experience
  • Aspects of private inner speech can be decoded during cognitive tasks like counting
  • High-fidelity solutions can prevent a speech brain-computer interface (BCI) from decoding private inner speech

Speech brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) show promise in restoring communication to people with paralysis but have also prompted discussions regarding their potential to decode private inner speech. Separately, inner speech may be a way to bypass the current approach of requiring speech brain-computer interface (BCI) users to physically attempt speech, which is fatiguing and can slow communication. Using multi-unit recordings from four participants, we found that inner speech is robustly represented in the motor cortex and that imagined sentences can be decoded in real time. The representation of inner speech was highly correlated with attempted speech, though we also identified a neural “motor-intent” dimension that differentiates the two. We investigated the possibility of decoding private inner speech and found that some aspects of free-form inner speech could be decoded during sequence recall and counting tasks. Finally, we demonstrate high-fidelity strategies that prevent speech brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) from unintentionally decoding private inner speech.

Starlink tries to block Virginia’s plan to bring fiber Internet to residents

Starlink operator SpaceX is fighting Virginia's plan to deploy fiber Internet service to residents, claiming that federal grant money should be given to Starlink instead. SpaceX is already in line to win over $3 million in grant money in the state but is seeking $60 million.

Starlink is poised to benefit from the Trump administration rewriting rules for the $42 billion Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) grant program. While the Biden administration decided that states should prioritize fiber in order to build more future-proof networks, the Trump administration ordered states to revise their plans with a "tech-neutral approach" and lower the average cost of serving each location.

Lidarr alternatives?

Are there any functional alternatives to Lidarr that function similarly? (Integration with the *arr stack, integration with download clients. I doubt there's another that would integrate with something like Jellyseerr or Ombi, but that would be a huge perk.)
in reply to matey

Headphones I think it’s called? But lidarr has the best integration given it’s a fork.

If this is about the lidarr metadata being fucked you can try something like github.com/blampe/hearring-aid… which has its own issues but is working.

All of the arr stack developers flip their shit if you so much as suggest adding support for a custom metadata server. It is by far the biggest weakness of the stack and it is mind boggling that all the major forks have inherited this behavior from sonarr.

Lidarr shows how foolish this approach is, musicbrainz makes one change and the app is fucked for over three months now with no end in sight. Thetvdb could do this to sonarr, themoviedb could do this to radarr. Adding a method to add other database sites with api access (or even just local data) should be a priority, but they not only dislike the idea, they get mad about it. Oh well, free project, fork it if youre so great, etc etc

in reply to ragebutt

At this rate lidarr will have the same fate as readarr did as it seems the main focus of the servarr devs are focused on radarr and prowlarr.

The problem is they have only one person left with the keys to the metadata server and if they are busy then it’s not a priority. Which I understand as a free project but just emphasizes how bad this approach is to have just a single metadata sever.

But with that said I’m still holding out hope for Lidarr, now finding a good readarr replacement that’s another sad story.

in reply to Sisko Urso

On the readarr front, check out chaptarr. It's currently in a closed beta, but it's looking like a great replacement.

Lidarr is not in danger of being abandoned like Readarr. The new metadata server for Lidarr is already up and in closed beta. A few final issues are being worked out before it’s opened to the public.
in reply to Confused_Emus

Says who? A pull request?
If there is a beta/nightly branch I can install, I'll be glad to use that so I can finally import the music I have acquired so far.

Apparently they keep posting updates on their discord for some reason. This is the last response someone shared on github:

Hi everyone, it's July 25. Yesterday, the devs and mod team here have begun (early) alpha testing of the new Lidarr metadata server.

In general, things are working fairly well. There are a few issues to resolve before it can go live. But we wanted to let everyone know that we have some concrete forward movement happening behind the scenes.

NOTE: This stage of testing is NOT OPEN to users. We appreciate your patience, but at this stage you cannot help. This update is meant to let you know that the project is not dead, as some have incorrectly theorized, and that there is behind-the-scenes work heading toward getting the new metadata server up and running as quickly as possible.

Please continue to be patient, and continue to use this channel for Lidarr support questions. If you have other conversation topics, please use general or another more appropriate channel for that.

Thank you from the devs and mod team.

Yeah...I saw that update. But I wouldnt count an update from the end of July recent in any capacity.
Because this sort of message has been repeated since the beginning of July with minimal changes to the content.
It's mostly a "We are still alive and sometimes working on it".

No issues with that. It's their volunteered free of charge time they are giving for our entertainment. Which I heavily appreciate. It's just a bit annoying how little information they give out (and their, sorta understandable, tone used in their support channel).

in reply to Appoxo

They’re standing up a new metadata server, which takes time. What more information are you expecting from them? I mean I suppose they could just lie and say sure it’ll be up next week, but it would be a lot more frustrating for them to keep saying that and pushing back the date.
in reply to Appoxo

Says the official support channels, which you should be checking for information anyway, unless your only intention is to scream your frustration into the void. If that’s the case, best of luck on that resolving anything.

ETA: like I said, it’s a closed beta, so not something you can install. And it won’t be a pull request because this fix won’t require an update to Lidarr, it’ll just start working again when the new server is done.

What the devs keep getting irritated about is people coming into the Official Lidarr Branch support channels and asking for support for something the devs have no control over or ability to assist with. Keep in mind that an individual user’s Lidarr instance does not connect directly to musicbrainz - the volume of API requests generated by Lidarr would be unsustainable without subscriptions. It connects to an intermediary metadata server set up and maintained by the Lidarr volunteers.

If they add a built-in option to add custom metadata servers, people will have an expectation of support. Even a note right next to the option that states custom metadata servers get no assistance wouldn’t help much since most people can’t seem to read. Basing that on the number of people who come into the Lidarr support discord channel every single day and ask if something is wrong with the metadata server despite there being a stickied message with very bold lettering explaining the issue and its current status.

I will agree that the devs in the discord have a shit bed-side manner, though. But there’s a reason that, if this were software produced by a company, you’d be speaking to a customer support specialist instead of directly to a dev. As someone who long ago worked my way up the IT ladder out of the rage-inducing pits of user-facing support roles, I definitely get it.

in reply to ragebutt

Thank you! I will try hearring-aid!
in reply to ragebutt

The issue isnt the metadata providers changing the API.
The issue is that the devs insist on implementing an API proxy/metadata mirror to lessen the burden.

Bro, just le me pull my own API key and let musicbrainz decide how much free API calls I can execute.

Reminds me of this meme i made a month ago, sad to see it’s still relevant.

Is there a maintained bypass-paywalls Firefox extension out there?

Hello.

I just noticed in one of my Firefox profiles that Mozilla auto-disabled the "Bypass Paywalls" extension after removing it from their end, which apparently happened a while ago.

I don't think I ever even used this extension, which is why I didn't catch this earlier. But now that it's banned, I definitely want it around 😉

The upstream repository also got DMCA'd. The repository of a presumably alternative (or cleaned) extension is also gone, although I found some GitHub mirrors of it (how ironic).

So, is there a maintained extension upstream I should know about?

in reply to NotFrenchJack

Incase anyone finds it useful.

Using a redirect to this website can be quite nice as well.

in reply to NotFrenchJack

Tangent, but why are people scared of the .ru repository? This was also an issue last time Bypass Paywalls was mentioned, and I thought it was quite strange to see in a piracy community. Are people unaware that a significant amount of the world's piracy originates from Russia?

Can you install only some programs included in the Master Collection from M0nkrus?

Note: I am not requesting a link, source, but regarding the Master Collection from M0nkrus, I am curious if it is possible to only install some of the software rather than all of them. I only want about 3~8 of them and don't need the other 16. (just Dimension, Illustrator, PS, and maybe the 5 Substance 3d apps)

I don't know if I should get them together or separately. I feel like the process might be more straightforward/less likely to run into issues if they are from the same collection, but I don't know.

Thank you.

in reply to Moonrise2473

Thank you for the advice. Get them separate just because of how few I am looking to get? I feel like there might be more setup required if I get them separately.

I also don't know if getting them separate would cause me to get redundant installers/managers/rules+patches each trying to apply the same patches.

The installer applies the patches automatically and I personally didn't have issues in installing multiple times, plus in this way you can easily uninstall a single app or upgrade a single one

Are jmp.chat eSIM adapters unique

Jmp.chat provides an adapter (a eUICC device?) that can be used to store an eSIM on a physical card. I have such an adapter that I have already used for a plan tied to my identity. Is it safe to purge the chip, and then to reuse it for anonymous communications?
in reply to spinning_disk_engineer

I think the eID should be unique and gets transmitted.

That's probably the ID that forbids me from installing (another) speedtest eSIM, though "ID" could also refer to IMEI perhaps. I'd have to try another phone.

So Long to Tech's Dream Job: It’s the shut up and grind era, tech workers said, as Apple, Google, Meta and other giants age into large bureaucracies.

cross-posted from: lemmy.world/post/34411807

While many of them still provide free food and pay well, they have little compunction cutting jobs, ordering mandatory office attendance and clamping down on employee debate. [...] “Tech could still be best in terms of free lunch and a high salary,” Ms. Grey said, but “the level of fear has gone way up.”

Along the way, the companies became less tolerant of employee outspokenness. Bosses reasserted themselves after workers protested issues including sexual harassment in the workplace. With the job market flooded with qualified engineers, it became easier to replace those who criticized.
“This is a business, and not a place to act in a way that disrupts co-workers or makes them feel unsafe, to attempt to use the company as a personal platform, or to fight over disruptive issues or debate politics,” Sundar Pichai, Google’s chief executive, said in a blog post last year.

FOSS alternatives to Google Docs?

What are some of the best alternatives out there to Google Docs and other cloud based productivity software?

I've heard of CognitoForms as alternative to Google Forms, does anyone have any experience with it?

in reply to DrFunkenstein

I personally use CryptPad, a web-based office suite that's privacy focused and allows for collaborative documents. It's a bit slow and completely unusable on mobile (imo) but it's fine on desktop.
in reply to DrFunkenstein

I personally use LibreOffice as an alternative to docs and sheets. It took me a second to figure everything out, but it works well enough.

I don't really like their slideshow or drawing programs though. They don't work well

Edit: I took a quick look at Cryptpad and they also seem like a good option
