v1.2 is coming very soon, please get ready

There's a massive backlog of awesome stuff that really needs to be released so I'll be doing that within the next week or two.

Along with that there have been several small changes to the API, mostly just fields being renamed. wjs018 has been posting to this community about them as he goes, please take a look if you haven't already. We have two swagger docs available, the automatically-updated one that includes all the changes at crust.piefed.social/api/alpha/… and the old one at freamon.github.io/piefed-api/

There is a new endpoint at crust.piefed.social/api/alpha/… which will tell you which version the instance is running on. You can get the same information at crust.piefed.social/api/alpha/… but /version is lighter on the server so please use that where possible.

Snark aside, my local library actually does offer digital access for those that want to use a phone or eReader as their primary consumption method. You should check if yours offers the same! Any effort that gets people reading and thinking is a good thing, in my mind.

Can we get an option to mark all crossposts of a post as read?

One of the more frustrating things to me with Lemmy is seeing the same post like seven times. I was thinking maybe there should be an option to long press the crossposts drop-down to get a context menu with the option to mark them all as read. This way they could all be hidden from the feed.

Over the past year, more than 1 million people have flocked to the central Italian town of Assisi, where Acutis’s body – covered in a wax mould of his likeness and dressed in his blue tracksuit top, jeans and trainers – is on view behind a glass-panelled case in Santa Maria Maggiore church. His heart is in a gold casket in the town’s San Rufino cathedral, while pieces of tissue from his pericardium – the membrane enclosing the heart – have toured the world in the lead-up to his canonisation.

‘I’ve never seen such an extensive film of pollution:’ New oil spill dumps over 10 tons of petroleum in the Black Sea, killing birds and coating Russian beaches

"Based on current [satellite] images, the area [of the slick] already measures 350 square kilometers. In my entire career, I’ve never seen such an extensive film of pollution on the sea. The film remains quite thick for this type of petroleum product. This means that the slick currently contains at least 10 metric tons of petroleum products. It’s located west of Anapa, with a small chance of some reaching the shore north of Anapa. The slick is moving toward Crimea, but for now it’s passing south of the Kerch Strait." -- Sergei Statichny, remote sensing expert at Russia’s Marine Rescue Service, according to pro-Kremlin agency TASS

It must be so confusing being a bird. You've got these long gangly aliens building inconceivably large portable and indestructible nests, and travelling insane distances - clearly the work of a superior lifeform.

And then they just dump this toxic stuff all over the place, killing all your friends. At first you must think "well, maybe this is beneficial in the longrun and the deaths were unavoidable".... but when it keeps happening and the effects get worse each time, you really begin to question their motives.

And that's why seagulls stealing food out of people's hands is based.

I use Kagi's AI search for things that are "unGooglable", but you explicitly have to turn that on by adding a question mark to the end of the query. Otherwise, I use its standard search.

It does take a little bit longer to get answers, but there's value in the struggle. I don't want to become a braindead AI repeater.

Japan's Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba resigns

TOKYO (AP) — Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba announced Sunday he will step down following growing calls from his party to take responsibility for a historic defeat in July’s parliamentary election. ……

the head of his conservative Liberal Democratic Party. Ishiba, a 68-year-old moderate centrist

Are there any Japanese people who could explain the political parties and viewpoints? Because those words don’t make sense to me in the order they are in.

in reply to DominusOfMegadeus

Liberal Democratic Party is the name of the party, they are conservative in Japanese politics.

'liberal' in general political discourse doesn't mean 'left-wing trending towards communist' as it is used in American communication, it is simply the historical opposing view to absolutism (e.g. Absolute monarchy). Liberal thought centers around individual freedoms; modern-day conservatives advocate for permissive individual freedoms by limiting government's role in as many facets of life as possible (in theory, real parties and platforms have little to do with their marketing). Modern-day liberals advocate for positively identfying and enforcing freedoms through law. Illiberal thought is common in the west, and advocates for limiting individual freedoms for one reason or another - Germany's prohibitions against Nazi speech, and the US's restrictions on recreational drugs are examples of illiberal policies.

in reply to skibidi

“Liberal” doesn’t mean “left wing trending towards communist” in American politics either; the problem in America is that the actual Nazi fascist party has spent decades grooming the population to think that the right-of-center-capitalist party are the literal authoritarian-yet-anarcho-communists plants from Satanland aka anywhere but the safe, persecution-free United States

So even when we are like “we should be more progressive and fix things!” The farthest we can get is Liberalism.

Which, by the way, may Americans who call themselves liberals would find they’re far to the left of actual American liberalism as well but shhh that’s also gotta be a lie because America and Americans BAD

Questa voce è stata modificata (4 giorni fa)
in reply to skibidi

Liberal and liberty have the same root — libre — freedom. There’s nothing in the word itself that is inherent about individual freedoms versus collective freedoms. Balancing the responsibilities and liberties of the individual versus the group has been in tension for as long as society has existed. Japan in particular tends to prioritize group needs over individual. You just pulled most of that shit directly from your ass.

Now to answer the actual fucking question: Japanese culture tends to prioritize stability, seniority, and lineage — as such Japan is essentially a one party democracy — and history has settled on the LDP for that. If you actually want to be in government then you need to join the LDP. For the minor interludes where a non LDP party was able to build a governing coalition, it has generally been considered a mistake by the electorate.

While on the surface the LDP governs, the LDP itself is *highly * factional. When Japanese PMs resign they’re usually pressured from within the LDP and replaced from within the LDP itself. And though the LDP are usually the leading party, they often require a coalition with other right wing parties. Those parties effectively act as cadet LDP factions.

While in the US you have only two highly monolithic parties, in Japan you have one very fractured party, and bunch of right wing partners. The LDP is right of center, but in Japanese politics it’s about as left as government gets. The Japanese themselves value stability, conformity, and the collective good. Post WW2 the US was afraid of communism in Japan and did a lot to maintain a center right establishment. In the 1970s the far left did a lot delegitimize themselves.

Trump’s Crypto Dealings Now Have the Perfect Cover

Link without paywall:
yahoo.com/news/articles/trump-…

The Trumps have never been known for their subtlety: They like to do things fast, big, and loud. This is especially so in the context of cryptocurrency, a noisy and chaotic industry by nature. Remember our president’s collection of NFTs? Among the depictions on these digital trading cards is a portrait of Donald Trump in an Iron Man–inspired suit, accompanied by the caption “SUPERTRUMP.” Or how about the $TRUMP meme coin and accompanying gamified gala dinner for its biggest investors

People who complain that crypto is a "pyramid scheme" or whatever are correct, but they fail to realize that capitalism is a pyramid scheme at best. I mean the biggest stock last year was a fascist surveillance company... And stuff like this is exactly why crypto will continue to succeed under capitalism.

It's a casino economy. Our lives have already been sold for chips. The branding of the chips doesn't actually matter but improved chip technology does. Casinos aren't actually using the same chips from the 1800s but the state is.

He's very clearly saying it's the problem with the system by assigning fault:

“What’s actually going to happen is rich people are going to use AI to replace workers,” Hinton said. “It’s going to create massive unemployment and a huge rise in profits. It will make a few people much richer and most people poorer. That’s not AI’s fault, that is the capitalist system.”

Israel to bring influencers and officials in global PR campaign

As part of the war of awareness against the anti-Israel narrative worldwide, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs led by Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar is promoting an unprecedented move in its scope: By the end of December, approximately 400 delegations are expected to arrive in Israel, including over 5,000 participants who will help spread the Israeli narrative in the international media and to international audiences.

The delegations include a wide range of participants, including government officials and elected officials, journalists and influencers, academics, legal, religious, cultural and sports figures. For comparison, so far, in an average year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has brought only 25 delegations to Israel.

The decision to "concentrate effort" on delegations, with an investment of approximately 135 million NIS, comes after studies that have shown the effectiveness of the tool in the war of consciousness, bringing public opinion multipliers to Israel, who, after their visit to Israel, spread the Israeli narrative on social media and in the communities in which they are active. A notable example of this was Caitlyn Jenner's visit, who was brought to Israel during Operation Rising Lion and her content from Israel were exposed to millions of people.

More than 7,000 under-fives in Gaza put in malnutrition recovery in two-week period

More than 7,000 children under the age of five were put on recovery programmes for acute malnutrition at clinics run by Unicef in Gaza in just two weeks last month, figures reveal.

The overall total for August is being compiled by Unicef but is expected to exceed 15,000 new patients, more than seven times the total in February.

A famine was declared in Gaza City, in the north of the devastated territory, last month, but other towns farther south are “fast catching up”, officials from the agency said.

“On the ground, it is crystal clear that people are starving, that there is a famine unfolding in Gaza City, and Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis [two southern cities in Gaza] are not far behind,” said Tess Ingram, a spokesperson with Unicef who has spent recent days in Gaza City.
