Declaring Metapendence – Facebook
My original plan was to delete my Facebook account back in July, timed around Independence Day. I’m nothing if not a sucker for symbolism.
As the 2025 drum corps season kicked into high gear around that time, along with my vacation, I ended up tabling my plan.
Recent events have convinced me that it is time to move forward with my plan and complete my departure from Meta owned and run services.
I am posting this message on September 11. I will shut down my Facebook account in one month, on October 11.

France says Apple notified victims of new spyware attacks
Translated and Republished under Open License, V2.0. Originally published in CERT-FR as Threat and Incident Report.
Since 2021, Apple has been sending notification campaigns to individuals targeted by spyware attacks.
These software programs, such as Pegasus, Predator, Graphite or Triangulation, are particularly sophisticated and difficult to detect.
These complex attacks target individuals because of their status or function: journalists, lawyers, activists, politicians, senior officials, members of management committees in strategic sectors, etc.
Receiving a notification means that at least one of the devices linked to the iCloud account has been targeted and is potentially compromised.
The notification results in the receipt of an iMessage and an alert email sent by Apple (from threat-notifications[at]email.apple.com or threat-notifications[at]apple.com). When logging into the iCloud account, an alert is displayed. The time between the compromise attempt and the receipt of the notification is several months, but remains variable.
The notifications sent report highly sophisticated attacks, most of which employ zero-day vulnerabilities or require no user interaction at all.
The following best practices help to better protect the phone against this type of attack:
- Update your devices to the latest version as soon as possible. Apple updates often fix vulnerabilities exploited by spyware;
- Enable automatic updates, including security updates;
- Separate personal and professional uses as much as possible, ideally by using different devices;
- Enable "Isolation Mode" to enhance the security of your Apple devices;
- Restart your device regularly, ideally once a day.
More generally, the following measures contribute to your good IT hygiene:
- Do not click on suspicious links or attachments;
Set up a strong and unique access code;
- Use two-factor authentication whenever possible;
- Avoid installing unknown apps or apps from alternative app stores.

Chicago is fighting back
It had only been 72 hours since their last major rally, but thousands of Chicagoans marched in protest against Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement “blitz” on Tuesday afternoon.Check out these wonderful photos and video.
"We are going to keep fighting against the escalated ICE raids and attacks against our communities,” Rania Salem, an organizer with the U.S. Palestinian Community Network, told ABC7 News. “Trump says that it's going to be war in Chicago, but I believe in the people's power and the resistance here is strong.”
The new enforcement push, which the Department of Homeland Security has designated “Operation Midway Blitz,” is actually off to a slow start as of this writing. Perhaps ICE has been scared away because of the resistance that Chicagoans, have already shown. Or perhaps the blitz is just “gathering steam,” as Gov. JB Pritzker warned on Tuesday.
Federal agents, with camera crews from Fox News and ABC News riding along, made a handful of apprehensions of people with criminal records on Tuesday – validating Illinois Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton’s description of the blitz as a “sick reality show.”
(Both networks – inexcusably, to my mind -- agreed to blur the faces of federal agents.)
But so far there have been no Los-Angeles-style raids of Home Depot parking lots or construction sites or other indiscriminate mass abductions based on racial profiling.

Charlie Kirk has never received a warm welcome in the pages of this magazine. It doesn’t matter now. The assassination of Kirk is a tragedy. Morally, it is unjustifiable. Politically, it is cause for serious alarm. A larger spiral into political violence would be a catastrophe for the Left.As of the time of this writing, no one knows the shooter’s ideology or motivations. But some key points are clear enough.
No one should be killed as punishment for political expression, no matter how objectionable. In addition to our basic abhorrence of violence, we are also proponents of democracy, which depends on free speech and open inquiry. Without them, collective self-governance is impossible and tyranny becomes inevitable. Imposing silence on political opponents by brute force, whether in the form of state crackdowns on dissent or lone-wolf assassinations of leaders, undermines a principle that democratic socialists have always held dear.
Charlie Kirk’s Murder Is a Tragedy and a Disaster
The assassination of Charlie Kirk threatens to embolden the far right and provide Donald Trump with a pretext for crushing dissent. Escalating political violence corrodes democratic norms and poses a unique threat to the Left.jacobin.com

In AI-simulated Fed meeting, political pressure polarises board
The findings showed when political pressure is applied, the AI agents became fragmented and dissent more common, according to the paper by Sophia Kazinnik and Tara Sinclair.
"This simulation shows that the Federal Reserve is only partially insulated from politics," and that "outside scrutiny can shape internal decision-making, even in an institution guided by formal rules," they said in the paper.
The simulation replicates the July 2025 FOMC meeting.
While few central banks may be ready to have AI agents set monetary policy, a growing number of them are using the technology to streamline operations.
The Fed conducted research using generative AI models to analyse minutes of the FOMC meetings. The European Central Bank uses machine learning models to forecast euro-area inflation.
Democrats coalesce around insurance subsidies as shutdown demand, Neal says
“If they try to jam something down our throats without any compromise — without any bipartisan, real, bipartisan discussion — they ain’t going to get the votes, plain and simple,” Schumer said.
Neal argued that Congress can’t wait much longer to avert the expiration of enhanced tax subsidies that help about 20 million of Americans afford health care plans offered on exchanges created by the Affordable Care Act. People who receive that assistance are already being notified that the tax subsidies will end later this year, he said, with open enrollment for health insurance beginning in November.
“So you can have this huge spike in health care costs coupled with the subtraction of health care for millions of Americans,” Neal said, referring to Medicaid cuts in the GOP domestic policy bill passed in July. “And we have broad agreement that the health of the American people should be paramount in this debate.”
French lawmakers urged a social media ban for under-15s and "digital curfew" for older minors

- TikTok Commission of Inquiry: "We saw an ocean of harmful content," says rapporteur Laure Miller.
:::
Imposing the ban and a 10 pm to 8 am curfew for 15- to 18-year-olds would "send a signal both to children and parents" that social media "is not harmless" for the young, Laure Miller, the MP who compiled a parliamentary inquiry's report, told AFP.With more than 1.5 billion users worldwide, TikTok -- owned by China-based ByteDance -- has been especially under fire from Western governments in Europe and the US in recent years.
Concerns raised over the platform have included content encouraging suicide, self harm or an unhealthy body image as well as its potential use for foreign political interference.
French President Emmanuel Macron has already backed a social media ban for children and young adolescents, following in the footsteps of Australia which started drafting its own landmark ban for under-16s last year.
Meanwhile TikTok is in legal limbo in America, as President Donald Trump has permitted the platform to continue operating there despite a law requiring its sale.
The service was also singled out as a vector for Russian influence when Romania's presidential election was controversially annulled last year by the country's supreme court.
Launched in March, the French parliamentary committee set out to examine TikTok and its psychological effects on minors after a 2024 lawsuit against the platform by seven families accusing it of exposing their children to content pushing them towards suicide.
Members put forward Thursday's recommendations -- welcomed by Laure Boutron-Marmion, a lawyer representing the families -- after months of testimony from families, social media executives and influencers.

Over 300 South Korean migrants released after being detained at Ga. Hyundai plant
After federal law enforcement officials said they conducted a raid at a Georgia battery plant that they called the "largest single-site enforcement operation in the history of Homeland Security Investigations," over 300 South Korean migrants have been released from U.S. custody.
According to the Yonhap News Agency, the migrants will board a plane and fly back to South Korea on Thursday, nearly a week after being detained. The operation took place at a Hyundai plant in Bryan County, Georgia. Officials said that 475 people — mostly South Korean nationals — were apprehended. Some of those present had entered the U.S. illegally, overstayed their visas, or did not have proper work permits.

DeSantis administration now housing immigrant detainees in north Florida prison
Florida on Tuesday started bringing immigrant detainees to the second migrant detention center the state has established this summer.
About 115 people are being held at the north Florida facility now, according to a Fox News clip shared by a spokesperson for the Florida Division of Emergency Management.
The spokesperson did not answer whether there have been any deportation flights out of the nearby Lake City airport.
The Fox News clip shows rows of bunk beds with twin-sized green mattresses in one room.
The north Florida detention center can hold about 1,300 people, according to the governor’s office.

The free market seems to be elated by the death of Charlie Kirk...
Seriously, did anyone else notice when they checked the stock market this morning that EVERY index is up by at least 65 points? My portfolio jumped nearly 3% today.
I'm not saying correlation = causation, but as time goes on, it will be interesting to see if deaths of prominent right wing mouth pieces indicate a bump in the market...
Death of a Troll
The last thing I ever thought I would do would be to write more than a few sentences about someone like Charlie Kirk. I have always found him to be a particularly loathsome coward. He had no values, he promoted nothing of real world worth, he helped no one, and he never provided comfort or support especially during times of crisis. He spent his career using rhetorical tricks to avoid good faith conversations, spreading hateful rhetoric, and incompetently defending Republican orthodoxy any time it was obvious even to young conservatives that Republicans were acting against their interests. His last major political move was to encourage his audience to trust the government regarding the Epstein files. There is nothing left of his legacy but his career of petty contempt and apologetics for heinous actions. No one will miss him. He is highly replaceable in all facets and his children have been saved from years of abuse, neglect, and exploitation which having such a miserable person as a father had doomed them to.
Kirk has never been as important as he has been during the last two days. He is now dominating the headlines of the world’s major newspapers. This is to contrast how unimportant he has been for over a decade. He was originally propped up by the Koch brothers as the dominant anti-intellectual voice of the youth, the face of the organization “Turning Point USA.” The purpose of this organization was(is?) to convince college students that intellectual pursuits were worthless because common sense conservatism already had all answers. This was unconvincing to college students but may have encouraged many impressionable young teenagers to avoid critical thinking and embrace conservative orthodoxy. This was the peak of his career. He aged out of his role almost immediately and has been haunting the background of conservative media ever since. He was no longer a collegiate peer offering an alternative to knowledge, but an aging idiot yelling at kids.
His recent Jubliee “debate” is emblematic of his recent status. For the duration of the video, young people make a fool of him one after another while his lack of any kind of wit, charm, or insight leaves him defenseless. His wordplay fails, his points easily dismantled, and his celebration of his own self-perceived victories are met with open disgust. Kirk was powerless and had lost any influence that he once had. He was on the way out.
On September 10, 2025, a sniper used a high-powered rifle to cleanly dispatch Charlie Kirk at an estimated distance of 200 yards before escaping without a trace. For those unfamiliar with firearms it is extraordinarily difficult to hit a person-sized target at all from this distance, and the shot was an extremely precise killing shot. In my opinion it is extremely unlikely that this shooting was anything but the act of a highly trained individual with extensive resources. I do not believe that this was a sudden act of passion, and I do believe it was a planned and coordinated strike.
Why kill Charlie Kirk? Kirk was a conservative D-lister with no power and waning influence. While alive, he was a political liability and go-to punching bag for political commentators. I can’t think of any reason a terrorist group or actor with the skill and resources they had at their disposal would pick Kirk as a target rather than almost anyone else whose death may have set back Trump’s movement. It is somewhat possible that a skilled veteran was personally offended by something Kirk said or did and used their skills to take revenge, but I’ve not seen this amount of professionalism and precision attached to a motive of this nature before.
Donald Trump and Nancy Mace have claimed that this was an assassination performed by agents of the Democrat Party. I can’t think of any way that this would benefit the Democrats. However, I can think of who may believe this obvious lie. I was raised a conservative so I understand that a conservative might believe the egghead democrats would want to kill a simple truth-teller to shut him up and stop him from spreading common sense. The belief that enemies of conservatives are motivated by this is conservative orthodoxy which all conservatives are required to believe as proof of their group membership. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this statement makes sense only to orthodox conservatives and to no one else.
Today is September 11th and the headlines are dominated by Kirk’s shooting and Republican vows for vengeance. It appears that this killing has massively supported Trump’s current agenda by providing another justification to bring the military down on US citizens to protect state power. Whether it is a coincidence or not, Trump and only Trump has benefited from this killing. Considering how quickly momentous events have been forgotten in the last several months, I’m hoping this push to make Kirk an angelic martyr of the Trump movement is forgotten as quickly and Kirk resumes his rightful place in obscurity.

There's a difference between being an asshole and being an asshole while monetizing it and corrupting the next generation.
Even the CEO guy who got Luigi'd was not as bad as Charlie Kirk in my eyes, he just made evil decisions for profit
Charlie Kirk exported his evil. Taught kids how to be evil. To be all manner of phobic. To hate. He actively worked to make the world a worse place

Russia’s war against Ukraine

Russia ‘deliberately targeted’ Poland’s airspace, Sikorski says. “Last night, Poland’s airspace was breached 19 times by drones manufactured in Russia. The assessment of Polish and NATO air forces is that they did not veer off course, but were deliberately targeted,” Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said in a video statement.
NATO engages Russia for first time ever as Poland downs drones amid mass attack on Ukraine. Poland confirmed downing Russian drones in its airspace during a mass aerial attack on Ukraine overnight on Sept. 10 in what is the first case of a NATO member engaging Moscow’s military assets over its territory during the war.
Belarus expands military infrastructure near Ukraine, may host Russian Oreshnik ballistic missiles. One site south of Minsk is being rebuilt on the grounds of a former Soviet missile base, and analysts believe it could house Oreshnik.
NATO activates Article 4 after Russian drones entered Polish airspace, Warsaw says. Article 4 of the NATO treaty allows member states to request consultations with the allies if they believe their security has been threatened, without triggering a military response.

‘Extremely dangerous’ — European leaders, Trump react to downing of Russian drones over Poland. European leaders denounced Russia on Sept. 10 after Poland downed multiple Russian drones in its airspace, marking the first time a NATO member has destroyed Moscow’s military assets over its territory during the war in Ukraine.

Human cost of Russia’s war
‘Pure terrorism’ — At least 25 killed in Russian air strike on Ukrainian village during pension payouts. The bombing took place around 11 a.m. while local residents lined up to receive pensions, according to officials. The casualties included local pensioners and employees of Ukrposhta, Ukraine’s national post service, who were delivering the payments.
29 killed, 34 injured in Russian attacks on Ukraine over past day. Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia launched 415 Shahed-type attack and decoy drones, 42 cruise missiles, and one Iskander-M ballistic missile overnight.
General Staff: Russia has lost 1,091,000 troops in Ukraine since Feb. 24, 2022. The number includes 990 casualties that Russian forces suffered over the past day.
International response
EU may accelerate phase-out of Russian oil and gas, von der Leyen says. The EU banned most Russian oil imports at the onset of the full-scale invasion in 2022 and previously planned to phase out all energy purchases by the end of 2027.
Ukraine receives another $1.2 billion in financial aid from the EU, PM announces. Ukraine receives funds from frozen Russian assets under the Group of Seven’s (G7) Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration (ERA) mechanism. Within the ERA initiative, Ukraine is expected to get $50 billion in loans that will be repaid using future profits from frozen Russian assets.
EU’s von der Leyen floats new Ukraine reparations loan funded by Russian assets. The proposed solution would stop short of confiscating Russian sovereign assets but provide additional funding to Ukraine as it faces Moscow’s ongoing all-out invasion.
Trump sees no reason to economically isolate Russia outside war in Ukraine, Vance says. Once a settlement is reached, Washington could have “a very productive economic relationship” with both Kyiv and Moscow, U.S. Vice President JD Vance said.

What exactly makes it "horrible" in your eyes? What would you have done differently?

in reply to cabbage • • •It defeats the point of quote posts. Why would I quote someone if they can render my whole post dead by removing the context if they don't like what I said? It effectively makes only "acceptable" positive and praising quote posts to be allowed.
I think people who are not comfortable to be quoted should restrain from public posting in general or quote posting should be instance level flag instead of user toggle to not ruin quote posts for everyone while giving those people an option to opt out.
Take Lemmy or PieFed. Analogous example would be if someone made a comment on a post and then had back and forth with another person. But the person who made the first comment had ability to hide all the other responses in the thread to hide the context of that discussion.
