Rehabbing an old Mac, need a specific ancient key or keygen that seems impossible to find
Ahoy, all! I am rehabbing an old MacBook Pro, running Mojave, which I keep local LAN only (MAC filtering at router) so I can share files and print from it but it never communicates with the wider net. This makes it perfect to use for the older versions of apps like Adobe Creative Suite 5 and MSOffice that I far prefer over newer versions, and I already have those working fine.
My sole problem is Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro for Mac, which requires a key, ANY locally valid key, to get past the initial setup, and I don't have mine anymore.
Problem is, nobody has any. I can find entire lists of keys for the Windows version of Acrobat Pro 9, no exaggeration, but for Mac? Crickets.
I've looked high and low, and nothing. I even looked at maybe a cracked install of only Acrobat Pro, but all the vetted cracked versions of Acrobat Pro on the seas are much newer, which I'm pretty certain I cannot run in tandem on the same box with Adobe CS 5.
I even tried the AMT folder thing, where you can at least get a trial code from your own install that you then increment up as needed to extend the trial indefinitely, but that is for Acrobat X and up: this folder literally does not exist on this machine, though it does for later versions on both Windows and Mac.
I mean, a key, that's it. That's all I need. One key that was valid at some point in the last fifteen years, doesn't even have to be good anymore.
Any ideas or suggestions as to where to look? Thanks in advance for all assistance.

Leaked plans show Pentagon eyeing Louisiana to deploy national guard
Documents show intent to deploy 1,000 troops to conduct law enforcement operations in urban centers
Donald Trump’s administration has drafted a proposal to deploy 1,000 Louisiana national guard troops to conduct law enforcement operations in the state’s urban centers, the Washington Post reported Saturday, citing military planning documents it had obtained.
Trump has made crime a major focus of his administration even as violent crime rates have fallen in many US cities. His crackdown on Democratic-led municipalities has fueled legal concerns and spurred protests, including a recent demonstration by several thousand people in Washington DC.
Democratic leaders have said that the massive deployments are more a show of power by Trump rather than a serious effort to fight crime.

[PDF] PromptPasta: Stirring the Pot of Political Discourse — How Generative AI Is Being Used and Confused by Inauthentic Influence Campaigns
cross-posted from: programming.dev/post/37390220
Alethea identified a network of at least 400 X accounts exhibiting inauthentic behavior and coordinated narrative promotion. The network used large language models (LLMs) to generate subtly varied copypasta-style content—a technique Alethea terms PromptPasta—to amplify messages aligned with key figures and policy positions associated with the second Trump Administration. The outputs of PromptPasta are nuanced, with variations in phrasing among the posts that correspond to each LLM prompt, making them harder to detect than identical posts shared via copypasta tactics. This investigation reveals how generative AI is being used to execute sophisticated influence operations that blur the line between authentic and inauthentic public opinion. Communications teams can no longer rely solely on traditional sentiment analysis or media monitoring—narratives are now shaped by coordinated networks using LLMs to seed doubt, amplify polarizing messages, and hijack conversations in real time. Understanding these evolving tactics is critical for identifying emerging risks to brand reputation, public trust, and message integrity before they escalate or mislead key audiences.

ActivityPub vs RSS Atom etc. Why Federate instead of aggrigate?
This post is inspired by this prior post about a blog leaving the fediverse in favor of sticking to RSS:
Why do we advocate for, and pour hours of development into, ActivityPub rather than building clients which add a social layer to existing content distribution and communication protocols? I ask this in earnest, assuming that there is a comprehensive and well thought out array of reasons that I need to learn to fully grasp the project and it's motives.
It appears the fundamental design decision of Activity pub, shifting the hosting burden from a single host to a distributed network of server instances and user point of access to social content from a single host to any instance that will allow them to join and support the volume of content that they request to federate. This enables a more robust network, with instances holding content the users have interacted with regardless of if the original host instance goes down. It also reduces time to load for content after it has beed federated to a user's local instance, assuming it is closer in proximity and capable enough. At the same time, this dramatically increases the total storage burden (and to a lesser extent compute burden) of the network and makes content ownership and control a challenge.
Functionally the Fediverse is a public commons with content ownership practically distributed across the network of instances, whether copyright says so or not. Attempts to impose universal author controls on this framework face a lot of dissonance because it is fundamentally at odds with the underlying concept of federation as distributed hosting. The minute a host begins hosting content over which they have no control (such as encrypted posts) the potential for abuse skyrockets, and compromises between these priorities demand at minimum that users outside a host's instance maintain rights to delete and modify content on their instance whether or not they are otherwise at odds with the instance admin. Encryption also adds substantial compute burden to the network.
Since the popularization of the Distributed Social Network concept I have wondered whether pre-existing content distribution infrastructure like RSS/Atom might not be more advantageous as a backbone for social networking, with the development load shifted mostly to the client side and away from protocols. The IndieWeb project is playing with some of these ideas, and I have seen some prototypes online of RSS based social networks, so my question is, what is the fundamental advantage of ActivityPub over the combination of these other existing protocols with longer histories and broader existing implementation? RSS, Atom, email, XMPP, etc. Is lower latency really a good enough justification for widely redundant data distribution when the aggregation and discovery of content can be handled separately from hosting it?
This question becomes increasingly relevant when it comes to multimedia, and the minute that you offload multimedia to central servers by link embedding instead of hosting within the instance, boom you are back to the old centralized architecture and why are you federating?
So I am going to pose this question to the Fediverse myself, what is the reason that federated content distribution should be adopted for general use rather than distributed aggregation? That is to say of a client performed with the same features as a Fediverse front end, but all of the content was self-hosted and listed via RSS or Atom with comments handled via Webmention, direct messages via email or XMPP, and moderation and discivery handled at the level of aggregation via instances (meaning a user "joins" or "subscribes" to an instance, and that instance provides a ban list, list of feeds subscribed to by its users for discovery, provides a user directory) what would be the features that this type of system would lack that ActivityPub based systems have in place?
There are three advantages I see to AcrivityPub, and I'm not completely sure they justify mass adoption vs. the cost of broad redundancy of content and authorship issues. What am I missing?
- Choosing local instance for faster loading, but this only is an advantage after content is brought in for the first time, in which case it actually is slower as first the instance has to pull the content and then serve it to the user.
- "all" content in the protocol is of the same type, allowing for easier interoperability between clients and services. I'm thinking this is the root of what most people will say is the big advantage of ActivityPub vs. older protocols, but I'd like to hear more about why this is enough of a reason to overcome the inertia of existing mass adoption and support of the alternatives. Also, couldn't this also apply to a service built on an existing self-hosted protocol like Atom?
- It isn't based in XML, and modern devs don't want to use XML. As I'm not a coder, I cant say how big an influence this has, but from what I have seen it seems to be a substantial factor. Can anyone explain why?
What am I missing? I know it must be a lot, and I thank you in advance for cluing me in.

Treasury Department says it will 'fully cooperate' with House Oversight panel's Epstein probe
The Treasury Department told the House Oversight Committee it will turn over certain bank activity reports related to the panel's Jeffrey Epstein investigation, according to a letter shared with CNN.
"The Department of the Treasury (Treasury) plans to fully cooperate with the Committee and intends to provide all information responsive to your request in a timely manner and compliant with the law," a letter from the Treasury Department sent to the committee on Friday reads.
The bank records, known as Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs), include sensitive information and require a specific process for how they get shared. Such reports are not conclusive and do not necessarily indicate wrongdoing. Financial institutions file millions of suspicious activity reports each year, and few lead to law enforcement inquiries.

Anonymity is dead and we’re all content now
One night, a friend of mine went out for dinner with her husband and toddler. The toddler, who sometimes had trouble swallowing, choked on his food — and threw up, repeatedly, in the restaurant. People around them were laughing while my friend and her family were in distress, adding to their embarrassment. But that wasn’t the worst part, she told me. She thought someone might have been filming. What if a video of her child being sick went viral? What if the awful laughter at the restaurant never ended?Social media has long been a game of roulette with fame at one end and public disgrace at the other. But if I am posting under my government name on Bluesky (or Facebook, or X, or Nextdoor, or whatever), at least I know I am rolling the dice on becoming the next unwitting bean dad, Brienne of Snarth, or Justine Sacco. Now all it takes to become the internet’s main character is to appear in public, where people film each other to perform the dual task of policing behavior and creating potential viral content.
Look, it’s easy to see why that Coldplay couple went viral. The exaggerated response to being on camera — and trying to duck an arena’s kiss cam — is funny. The couple is possibly cheating (immoral, loathed by TikTok) and Chris Martin (the man who knowingly married Gwyneth Paltrow and then consciously uncoupled!) gets a good dunk in. All someone had to do was identify them, and they had one of the world’s most powerful accelerants: the bad behavior of a CEO with one of his employees. It was perfect internet content.
The fact that it’s perfect internet content is also what encourages us to surveil each other. And the consequences of the funny internet video were very real. The CEO resigned. His former subordinate is getting a divorce, which I know because People and E! News reported on the filing as news. The humiliation didn’t end with the viral video — it’s still ongoing, and by writing about it, I am in some sense participating.
This is all possible because our society built a panopticon that any of us can use against any other at will. And while virality isn’t new, TikTok’s algorithm makes it easier than ever for videos to take off unexpectedly, because users don’t even have to share the video to make it go wide. You don’t even have to get caught on a kiss cam at a concert.
Anonymity is dead and we’re all content now

Proton Mail Suspended Journalist Accounts at Request of Cybersecurity Agency
cross-posted from: ibbit.at/post/52938
The company behind the Proton Mail email service, Proton, describes itself as a “neutral and safe haven for your personal data, committed to defending your freedom.”But last month, Proton disabled email accounts belonging to journalists reporting on security breaches of various South Korean government computer systems following a complaint by an unspecified cybersecurity agency. After a public outcry, and multiple weeks, the journalists’ accounts were eventually reinstated — but the reporters and editors involved still want answers on how and why Proton decided to shut down the accounts in the first place.
Martin Shelton, deputy director of digital security at the Freedom of the Press Foundation, highlighted that numerous newsrooms use Proton’s services as alternatives to something like Gmail “specifically to avoid situations like this,” pointing out that “While it’s good to see that Proton is reconsidering account suspensions, journalists are among the users who need these and similar tools most.” Newsrooms like The Intercept, the Boston Globe, and the Tampa Bay Times all rely on Proton Mail for emailed tip submissions.
Shelton noted that perhaps Proton should “prioritize responding to journalists about account suspensions privately, rather than when they go viral.”
On Reddit, Proton’s official account stated that “Proton did not knowingly block journalists’ email accounts” and that the “situation has unfortunately been blown out of proportion.” Proton did not respond to The Intercept’s request for comment.
The two journalists whose accounts were disabled were working on an article published in the August issue of the long-running hacker zine Phrack. The story described how a sophisticated hacking operation — what’s known in cybersecurity parlance as an APT, or advanced persistent threat — had wormed its way into a number of South Korean computer networks, including those of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the military Defense Counterintelligence Command, or DCC.
The journalists, who published their story under the names Saber and cyb0rg, describe the hack as being consistent with the work of Kimsuky, a notorious North Korean state-backed APT sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department in 2023.
As they pieced the story together, emails viewed by The Intercept show that the authors followed cybersecurity best practices and conducted what’s known as responsible disclosure: notifying affected parties that a vulnerability has been discovered in their systems prior to publicizing the incident.
Saber and cyb0rg created a dedicated Proton Mail account to coordinate the responsible disclosures, then proceeded to notify the impacted parties, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the DCC, and also notified South Korean cybersecurity organizations like the Korea Internet and Security Agency, and KrCERT/CC, the state-sponsored Computer Emergency Response Team. According to emails viewed by The Intercept, KrCERT wrote back to the authors, thanking them for their disclosure.
A note on cybersecurity jargon: CERTs are agencies consisting of cybersecurity experts specializing in dealing with and responding to security incidents. CERTs exist in over 70 countries — with some countries having multiple CERTs each specializing in a particular field such as the financial sector — and may be government-sponsored or private organizations. They adhere to a set of formal technical standards, such as being expected to react to reported cybersecurity threats and security incidents. A high-profile example of a CERT agency in the U.S. is the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency, which has recently been gutted by the Trump administration.
A week after the print issue of Phrack came out, and a few days before the digital version was released, Saber and cyb0rg found that the Proton account they had set up for the responsible disclosure notifications had been suspended. A day later, Saber discovered that his personal Proton Mail account had also been suspended. Phrack posted a timeline of the account suspensions at the top of the published article, and later highlighted the timeline in a viral social media post. Both accounts were suspended owing to an unspecified “potential policy violation,” according to screenshots of account login attempts reviewed by The Intercept.
The suspension notice instructed the authors to fill out Proton’s abuse appeals form if they believed the suspension was in error. Saber did so, and received a reply from a member of Proton Mail’s Abuse Team who went by the name Dante.
In an email viewed by The Intercept, Dante told Saber that their account “has been disabled as a result of a direct connection to an account that was taken down due to violations of our terms and conditions while being used in a malicious manner.” Dante also provided a link to Proton’s terms of service, going on to state, “We have clearly indicated that any account used for unauthorized activities, will be sanctioned accordingly.” The response concluded by stating, “We consider that allowing access to your account will cause further damage to our service, therefore we will keep the account suspended.”
On August 22, a Phrack editors reached out to Proton, writing that no hacked data was passed through the suspended email accounts, and asked if the account suspension incident could be deescalated. After receiving no response from Proton, the editor sent a follow-up email on September 6. Proton once again did not reply to the email.
On September 9, the official Phrack X account made a post asking Proton’s official account asking why Proton was “cancelling journalists and ghosting us,” adding: “need help calibrating your moral compass?” The post quickly went viral, garnering over 150,000 views.
Proton’s official account replied the following day, stating that Proton had been “alerted by a CERT that certain accounts were being misused by hackers in violation of Proton’s Terms of Service. This led to a cluster of accounts being disabled. Our team is now reviewing these cases individually to determine if any can be restored.” Proton then stated that they “stand with journalists” but “cannot see the content of accounts and therefore cannot always know when anti-abuse measures may inadvertently affect legitimate activism.”
Proton did not publicly specify which CERT had alerted them, and didn’t answer The Intercept’s request for the name of the specific CERT which had sent the alert. KrCERT also did not reply to The Intercept’s question about whether they were the CERT that had sent the alert to Proton.

Later in the day, Proton’s founder and CEO Andy Yen posted on X that the two accounts had been reinstated. Neither Yen nor Proton explained why the accounts had been reinstated, whether they had been found to not violate the terms of service after all, why had they been suspended in the first place, or why a member of the Proton Abuse Team reiterated that the accounts had violated the terms of service during Saber’s appeals process.Phrack noted that the account suspensions created a “real impact to the author. The author was unable to answer media requests about the article.” The co-authors, Phrack pointed out, were also in the midst of the responsible disclosure process and working together with the various affected South Korean organizations to help fix their systems. “All this was denied and ruined by Proton,” Phrack stated.
Phrack editors said that the incident leaves them “concerned what this means to other whistleblowers or journalists. The community needs assurance that Proton does not disable accounts unless Proton has a court order or the crime (or ToS violation) is apparent.”

Many thanks. Seriously. May it come back to you.

There are sites that claim to have iSerialReader, but a new version that looks really sketch from a different site, and is apparently geared toward newer releases from what little I could see. The old version, probably the one you're thinking of, appears to have been great, one of those straightforward things that you could get from a single place that kept it updated with crowdsourced data, but it's not around anymore.
I'll definitely have a look at the MacSerialJunkie forum when I get a chance, because at first glance it looks like they've kept all their posts since 2008, which might prove helpful for anyone like me running vintage apps on an old Mac. Thanks for the recommend, really appreciated.
