The assassination of Charlie Kirk presages a new, deadly stage in the disintegration of a fractious and highly polarized United States. While toxic rhetoric and threats are lobbed across cultural divides like hand grenades, sometimes spilling over into actual violence — including the murder of Minnesota House of Representatives Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband and the two assassination attempts against Donald Trump — Kirk’s killing is a harbinger of full-scale social disintegration.His murder has given the movement he represented — grounded in Christian nationalism — a martyr. Jeffrey Epstein estate turns over more documents to House committee
Jeffrey Epstein's estate has turned over additional documents to the House Oversight Committee, including a previously redacted name from the late sex offender's now-notorious 50th birthday book, according to a letter obtained by NBC News.
The name that was unredacted was not immediately publicly released.
The attorneys said in a letter to the committee dated last week that it had "redacted the names of specified categories of individuals out of an abundance of caution to ensure no potential victims are publicly identifiable" when it turned over the book last week but that after "further review, we identified one redacted name that does not appear to fit within those categories."
The estate also turned over what it described as "another of Mr. Epstein's address/contact books."
"In an abundance of caution, we have redacted names and contact information of women who appear in the sections of the book titled 'Massage — New York (a)', “Massage — New York (b)' and 'Massage — UK' to ensure that no potential victims are publicly identifiable," says the letter, which was first reported by CNN.

Kathy Hochul Endorsed Zohran Mamdani. Will Top Democrats Join Her?
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul became the top official in the state to endorse Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani for New York City for mayor on Sunday, marking a shift for a strident defender of Israel as mainstream Democrats grapple with surging public support for Mamdani’s criticism of the Israeli regime over its ongoing genocide in Gaza.
In an opinion piece for the New York Times, Hochul wrote that she and Mamdani shared priorities like making the city more affordable and ensuring strong leadership of the New York Police Department. She also took an oblique shot at Mamdani’s two main competitors: current New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who President Donald Trump’s team has reportedly pushed to drop out of the race, and Andrew Cuomo, who would have a better shot at winning if Adams did so. The former governor lost the Democratic primary by just under 13 percentage pointsto Mamdani in June.
“In light of the abhorrent and destructive policies coming out of Washington every day, I needed to know the next mayor will not be someone who would surrender one inch to President Trump,” Hochul wrote. Trump, apparently displeased with the endorsement, called it “a rather shocking development.”
Hochul’s support for Mamdani followed nearly three months of hand-wringing from the de facto leader of New York’s Democratic Party, who has expressed skepticism of Mamdani’s policy proposals that would require tax hikes on the wealthy and more public spending. Now, Hochul’s endorsement sets her apart from the top two Democrats in Congress — Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries — who have both declined to weigh in on the most heated race in New York City.
As a result, New York’s Democratic establishment remains split over whether they should rally behind Mamdani, Cuomo, or — seemingly – no one.
Nearly three months after the primary, only four members of the Democratic congressional delegation representing New York City districts have endorsed Mamdani: Reps. Nydia Velázquez, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Jerry Nadler, and Adriano Espaillat. Only Velázquez and Ocasio-Cortez backed Mamdani before his primary win.
“We have a Democratic nominee,” Ocasio-Cortez told reporters earlier this month. “Are we a party that rallies behind their nominee, or not?”
Many members of New York City’s financial elite, set on edge by Mamdani’s promises of a freeze on stabilized rents and othermeasures to lower the city’s cost of living, have been plotting to keep him from securing the mayor’s seat in November.
Democratic Reps. George Latimer, Ritchie Torres, Gregory Meeks, and Tom Suozzi have endorsed Cuomo. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Reps. Dan Goldman, Grace Meng, and Yvette Clarke have not made endorsements in the race.
Urging her fellow New York Democrats to back Mamdani, Ocasio-Cortez has pointed to her support of President Joe Biden during the 2024 presidential election even though he was not her preferred candidate.
“We use our primaries to settle our differences and once we have a nominee, we rally behind that nominee. I am very concerned by the example that is being set by anybody in our party,” Ocasio-Cortez said earlier this month. “If an individual doesn’t want to support the party’s nominee now, it complicates their ability to ask voters to support any nominee later.”
Outside the city, Rep. Pat Ryan, a Democrat who represents a swing district in the Hudson Valley, endorsed Mamdani last week. Democratic Rep. Laura Gillen, a moderate from Long Island, was the first Democrat to publicly denounce Mamdani’s campaign after his win but has not endorsed a candidate in the race.
Reached for comment, a spokesperson for Jeffries pointed to a statement he made to reporters last week: “I certainly will have more to say about the New York City mayor’s race in short order.”
Offices for Schumer, Gillibrand, Goldman, Meng, and Clarke did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Nadler, who announced this month he will retire at the end of the current congressional session, addressed his change of heart toward Mamdani during an interview with WNYC’s Brian Lehrer on September 5. During the primary, Nadler said he would not back Mamdani because of his criticism of Israel’s genocide in Gaza and what Nadler called Mamdani’s lack of experience. Nadler told Lehrer his decision to endorse Mamdani after he won the primary was a no-brainer.
“First, he was the Democratic nominee,” Nadler said. “Second, what are the alternatives? You have the mayor, who’s a crook, and you had Andrew Cuomo, whom I had said should resign from the governorship because he was a repeat sexual predator.”
Goldman, whose Manhattan district Mamdani won in June, endorsed state Sen. Zellnor Myrie before the primary and has said he has spoken with Mamdani but won’t endorse him without “concrete steps” to assuage fears from Jewish New Yorkers about hate crimes in the city. It’s not clear what further steps Goldman wants to see — Mamdani has he takes concerns about antisemitism seriously and that he would take steps to protect all of his constituents — Jewish and otherwise.
Clarke endorsed New York City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams before the primary. Meng, who did not make an endorsement prior to the primary, congratulated Mamdani on his win in June and a campaign that she said “built coalitions & mobilized underrepresented New Yorkers!” But she stopped short of endorsing Mamdani.
Gustavo Gordillo, co-chair of the New York City Democratic Socialists of America, which supports Mamdani’s campaign, condemned the party establishment for neglecting to rally behind Mamdani.
“Establishment Democrats have no plan to support the workers targeted by Trump’s agenda,” Gordillo said. “If establishment Democrats refuse to get behind Zohran, they’re not just rejecting the vision of an affordable NYC — they’re rejecting the 500,000 voters and counting who are behind Zohran.”

Ieri, volendo resettare il salvataggio di Animali Crostini Nuovi Orizzonti, ho scoperto di averci dovuto perdere svariati minuti, perché non è esattamente ovvio il come… e un pochino mi sento stupida. Certamente ho pensato di dover andare sul menu impostazioni semi-nascosto di avvio del gioco (tasto MINUS), e non di continuare normalmente come se volessi giocare, ma… in realtà, a parte che è tutto mezzo criptico lì e ho dovuto perdere qualche minuto solo per beccare il tasto giusto di 5, ho scoperto che è comunque tutta una presa in giro: Tom Nook rigira la frittata e dice di andare nelle impostazioni della console, per compiere il lavoro, che questa roba della formattazione non è mestiere suo ormai! 🤯
E, un po’, la cosa è triste. Cancellare la città (ai tempi di prima dell’isola, appunto) era a suo modo un’esperienza mistica nella sua brutalità, perché l’entità di turno si prendeva in carico la cosa, ma prestava molto impegno a fare un discorso dissuadente, ansiogeno, per certi versi con un valore filosofico palpabile, pur di soltanto posticipare l’inevitabile, con qualche ulteriore paragrafo di dialogo ed una tripla conferma… Chi mai sarà il mortale giocatore per pretendere l’eliminazione nel nulla, una condanna per certi versi peggiore della semplice distruzione, di un intero villaggio con tutti i suoi esseri viventi al seguito, come se questi non fossero mai esistiti in primo luogo, e ciò nonostante dall’altra parte i tali esseri non possono fare altro che obbedire, sotto il peso del codice macchina che li definisce? 🙀Insomma, mi fa quasi strano che Tom Nook non mi dica sostanzialmente niente di ché, dopo avergli rivelato di voler commettere il crimine. E così, dalle sterili impostazioni di sistema, compiere l’operazione è stato stranamente indolore, fin troppo leggero rispetto all’abitudine… anche perché, ovviamente, un ulteriore backup (…che credo sia l’unico attualmente, perché i precedenti non li trovo più) l’ho fatto prima, ma non è solo quello. Cancellare tutto per mezzo di un menu asettico, senza i suoni di animaletti terrorizzati in sottofondo, non da il giusto rispetto alla cosa. 🤥

Hive0154, aka Mustang Panda, drops updated Toneshell backdoor and novel SnakeDisk USB worm
- Throughout mid-2025, X-Force observed several Toneshell and Pubload malware variants in weaponized archives mostly uploaded from Singapore and Thailand.
- One of the variants evading VirusTotal detections is the latest update "Toneshell9". It supports command and control (C2) communication through locally configured proxies to blend in with enterprise network traffic and facilitates two reverse shells in parallel.
- X-Force analyzed a new USB worm, SnakeDisk, which only executes on devices located in Thailand, based on their IP address. The worm displays code overlaps with Tonedisk and is able to detect new and existing USB devices, which it weaponizes as a means of propagation.
- The analyzed SnakeDisk sample drops the Yokai backdoor on infected devices, which sets up a reverse shell allowing operators to execute arbitrary commands. Yokai was previously tied to campaigns targeting Thai officials in December 2024.

Court finds OPM (Office of Personnel Management) unlawfully directed mass firings, tells agencies to update personnel files
A federal judge in San Francisco found the Office of Personnel Management unlawfully directed agencies to fire probationary federal employees en masse.
U.S District Court Judge William Alsup ruled late Friday that OPM “exceeded its own powers,” and “directed agencies to fire under false pretense,” telling probationary employees that they were being terminated for poor performance.
The ruling doesn’t reinstate any of the 25,000 probationary federal employees fired around mid-February, but it does direct many agencies to update their personnel records to specify that these employees were not fired for poor performance or misconduct. Agencies must also send letters to impacted employees starting they were not fired for performance.
The ruling, in a lawsuit led by federal employee unions, applies to the departments of Commerce, Defense, Health and Human Services, Labor, Treasury, Transportation and Agriculture. OPM, NASA, the State Department and the Office of Management and Budget are exempt from the ruling.

Siccome qui su NodeBB mi sembra di stare su un altro pianeta, stavo pensando se aprire una categoria dedicata al self-hosting casalingo, dove scrivere le mie esperienze. In casa ho già tre mini-pc collegati al modem ADSL.
Il mio modem/router adsl ha la porta DMZ (zona demilitarizzata) abilitata su un mini-pc che mi fa da Proxy. Lo so, probabilmente per alcuni i termini dmz e proxy suonano arabo. Non lo so, forse ho già spaventato qualcuno con quelle due terminologie. Al posto del DMZ si può usare il port forwarding del modem/router.
Ecco il port forwarding è un'altra terminologia tecnica da spaventapasseri. Quando parlo di queste cose con amici e familiari mi sento a disagio perché so già che tanti non capiscono la terminologia tecnica e me lo dicono in faccia già loro: parli difficile, non ti seguo. Sebbene in casa tutti abbiamo un modem/router se vogliamo essere collegati a Internet, basta aprire il manuale istruzioni di questi dispositivi o scaricarli da Internet per trovare la spiegazione dettagliata di queste terminologie.
Tuttavia alla maggioranza delle persone evidentemente non interessano i dettagli tecnici dei modem e dei router. Per loro basta che il modem funzioni, si agganci alla rete, fa tutto il DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) e via. Eppure se si vuole fare selfhosting casalingo è importante capire quella terminologia, altrimenti non si va da nessuna parte.

And the forum’s rules make it impossible for homeowners to drop their lawsuit without Citizens’ approval, unless they withdraw their claim, a move that can lead to court costs and attorney’s fees if not filed early in the process. Some have felt forced to go to final hearings where they lost and ended up owing thousands to Citizens.

Yesterday: Venezuela says US navy raided a tuna boat in the Caribbean as tensions rise
Personnel from a U.S. warship boarded a Venezuelan tuna boat with nine fishermen while it was sailing in Venezuelan waters, Venezuela’s foreign minister said on Saturday, underlining strained relations with the United States.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Tensions between the two nations escalated after U.S. President Donald Trump in August ordered the deployment of warships in the Caribbean, off the coast of the South American country, citing the fight against Latin American drug cartels.
While reading a statement on Saturday, Foreign Minister Yván Gil told journalists the Venezuelan tuna boat was “illegally and hostilely boarded by a United States Navy destroyer” and 18 armed personnel who remained on the vessel for eight hours, preventing communication and the fishermen’s normal activities. They were then released under escort by the Venezuelan navy.

Rip Currents and Hurricanes
When it comes to the beach, looks can be deceiving. That calm-looking water to the side of big crashing waves may actually be a rip current that carries water back out to the ocean. Rip currents are a result of conservation of mass; just as waves carry water to the shore, something has to carry that incoming water back out to the ocean. Depending on the local topography, that outflow could be below the water surface, creating an undertow, or along the surface, as a rip current.
Even when far offshore, hurricanes can trigger unexpected and strong rip currents, largely because they create bigger waves that travel shoreward. Those waves can also change the depth and layout of the underwater shoreline, potentially exacerbating rip currents.
