Germany's position has been reverted to UNDECIDED.Despite expressing concerns about breaking end-to-end encryption, Germany refrained from taking a definitive stance on the Chat Control proposal during the September 12th LEWP meeting. A willingness to negotiate and compromise remains.
This is an unfortunate development as Germany is crucial to defeating Chat Control.

Post I made on a Lemmy community is not visible
So, I made a post in a Lemmy group that I was using before moving to Piefed. I made it using my piefed account on piefed.ee.
It's now properly visible through lemmy.ee, but not visible on the actual instance where the group is located, nor on piefed.social. The image shows all three: piefed.ee first, then Sopuli, then piefed.social. As you can see, the topmost post is missing in the lower two screenshots.
I've tried refreshing Sopuli's view of the community and I've tried leaving the community and joining it. But, nothing.
It could be it has an effect that the "type" of post I chose on Piefed was "Link", because I wanted the post to include a link as is very common on Lemmy posts. But, that would be very weird, because it's indeed a type of post very common on Lemmy, so why would that be a problem when posted into a community on a Lemmy instance from within a Piefed instance?
Trump says bringing $15 bn lawsuit against New York Times
Washington (AFP) – US President Donald Trump said Monday that he is bringing a $15 billion "defamation and libel lawsuit" against the New York Times."The New York Times has been allowed to freely lie, smear, and defame me for far too long, and that stops, NOW!" he wrote on his Truth Social platform, adding the lawsuit was being brought in Florida.
AFP has contacted the New York Times for comment.
Trump decried the newspaper as a "virtual 'mouthpiece' for the Radical Left Democrat Party" and accused it of lying about his "family, business, the America First Movement, MAGA, and our Nation as a whole."
He provided no evidence for his claims.
The news outlet reported last week that Trump had threatened legal action against it in relation to articles on a lewd birthday note given to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The Republican president has denied authoring the note.
Trump has intensified his attacks on traditional media since his return to the White House, repeatedly badmouthing journalists critical of his administration, restricting access and bringing lawsuits.
He sued media magnate Rupert Murdoch and The Wall Street Journal for at least $10 billion in July after it published an article about his friendship with Epstein.
Paramount settled Trump's lawsuit over election coverage on CBS News' flagship show "60 Minutes" for $16 million the same month. He had alleged that the program deceptively edited an interview with his 2024 election rival, Kamala Harris, in her favor.

Charlie Kirk’s Murder Fuels New Attacks on Higher Education
In the days following the murder of MAGA influencer Charlie Kirk, his friends and allies have called for revenge against all kinds of groups, including trans people and the so-called radical left, even as the motivations of the alleged shooter, who was reportedly raised in a Republican household, remain far from clear. Now, some of those same rightwing figures are homing in on another target: colleges and universities, which they blame for radicalizing both the alleged shooter and, more broadly, people they accuse of celebrating Kirk’s death.
“These universities should not receive a single American tax dollar.”
Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old Utah man who is accused of shooting Kirk, reportedly attended just one semester of college at Utah State University in 2021. He later enrolled at a technical college, where he was a third-year electrical apprentice. Those facts make it clear that traditional higher education factually could not have played a meaningful role in what led him to allegedly shoot Kirk. But that logic hasn’t mattered to figures like MAGA activist and Trump confidante Laura Loomer, who tweeted on Sunday that it was “time to defund American universities. You don’t need to go to college. Charlie Kirk didn’t go to college.” (At 18, Kirk dropped out of an Illinois community college after one semester to dedicate his time to activism, with funding from Turning Point co-founder Bill Montgomery; after high school, Kirk unsuccessfully applied to West Point.)
In her tweet, Loomer tagged Harmeet Dhillon, an Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the Department of Justice, who responded, “I’m on it. And all the other haters at our American funded schools.”
Dhillon is one of the Trump-appointed officials who has been deeply involved in the push to try to expose, embarrass, or fire anyone speaking ill of Kirk or seeming to celebrate his murder. She praised actions taken against faculty members at Clemson University, where one person has been fired and two instructors suspended after making what the university called “inappropriate” remarks about Kirk following his death.
Dhillon called Clemson’s actions “a good start,” adding, “Federal funding for higher education is a privilege, NOT a right. The government is not obligated to fund vile garbage with our tax dollars.”
This general line of argument—that federal funding should be pulled from universities whose employees say things Trump and his allies don’t like—has animated the administration’s long-standing attacks on higher education. But since Kirk’s death, it’s been widely repeated in a new context. Take Representative Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), who issued a press release on Monday calling on the Department of Education to cut off “every dime of federal funding to any elementary, secondary, or post-secondary school who refuses to remove or discipline staff who glorify or justify political violence.”
“This is why these universities should not receive a single American tax dollar,” tweeted Lara Logan, a former CBS journalist turned conspiracy theorist, while reposting a report about a University of Michigan professor accused of celebrating Kirk’s death. “They preach hatred of this country, which is Marxist doctrine. It is helping to destroy this country from within—wake up.”
Other figures, like Federalist editor-in-chief Molly Hemingway, called for what could credibly be described as affirmative action to make schools more conservative. “All public universities should be required to have minimum 50% of their staff be conservative professors by spring 2026,” she tweeted. “In each department.” When a journalist on the site asked if she supported affirmative action, Hemingway responded, “No, I want to remove the left-wing oppression that has destroyed American universities.”
Beyond calls to defund colleges and universities, other figures have said that such institutions need more surveillance and campus activism from conservative students. The group includes longtime sting video maker James O’Keefe, who said his company O’Keefe Media Group “will be distributing hidden cameras nationwide to those who are witness to abuse in their school and who are willing to expose it.” O’Keefe added that he would host a livestream this week “where we will put campus corruption on blast and issuing a clear call to action: it’s time to rip the rot out of America’s education system.”
American higher education has long been depicted on the right as a hotbed of Marxism. Yet Kirk’s organization Turning Point USA itself could not have been created without institutes of higher learning; it was explicitly created to promote conservative views in high school, college, and university campuses—and it has thrived on many. Kirk himself said earlier this year that he thought his messaging was working, tweeting that he felt college students were becoming more conservative, even if the institutions themselves remained more liberal.
The right’s renewed pledge to attack universities is just one piece of what the White House has said will be a government-wide push to dismantle “radical” organizations following Kirk’s murder, which Trump has repeatedly blamed on the “radical left.” In practice, this appears to mean threatening left-leaning organizations with defunding and investigation. Speaking on Monday as a guest host of Kirk’s podcast, Vice President JD Vance also threatened to “go after the NGO network that foments, facilitates and engages in violence.”

Map shows states with laws limiting "junk fees" for renters
The nationwide, bipartisan movement to eliminate so-called "junk fees" for renters has reached Massachusetts, where landlords are now forced to share the total price of what they are renting out with a future tenant before asking for any personal information.
Massachusetts is only the latest in a series of states which have introduced similar legislation against hidden fees in the rental market in recent years, including California and Colorado, as Americans struggle with a housing affordability crisis.
A study by the National Consumer Law Center found that junk fees cost American tenants hundreds of millions of dollars a year, disproportionately impacting the lowest-income and marginalized renting households, who spend a higher share of their wages on these hidden costs.
According to U.S. Census Bureau data, over 21 million renter households—the equivalent of about half of all renter households—spent more than 30 percent of their monthly income on rent in 2023, enough to be considered cost-burdened.

Feds propose rescinding public lands rule, which made conservation an official 'use' of BLM land • North Dakota Monitor
The federal government on Wednesday proposed rescinding a Bureau of Land Management rule that allows the department to consider conservation as part of its multi-pronged approach to federal land management.
The change comes as the Trump administration continues pushing for increased resource utilization of public lands, including through logging and mining.
The proposal drew immediate reactions — with political leaders praising the reversal as helpful to energy production but conservation groups decrying it as another harm to public lands access.
'Impeachable': Explosive report on Trump's massive crypto 'scandal' stuns observers
The New York Times on Monday published a blockbuster report detailing how US President Donald Trump’s administration gave the United Arab Emirates access to high-powered artificial intelligence chips just days after receiving a massive investment in Trump’s cryptocurrency startup.
As the Times report documented, Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a member of the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) ruling family, had one of his investment firms deposit $2 billion into World Liberty Financial, the startup founded by members of the Trump family and the family of Trump Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff.
Just two weeks later, wrote the Times, “the White House agreed to allow the UAE access to hundreds of thousands of the world’s most advanced and scarce computer chips, a crucial tool in the high-stakes race to dominate artificial intelligence,” despite national security concerns about these chips being shared with China.

[FCC Chair] Carr splits from the GOP's social media crackdown after Kirk killing
Amid a conservative firestorm over online speech, Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr on Tuesday rejected the notion that the government should crack down on social media posts following conservative organizer Charlie Kirk’s assassination.
“I think you can draw a pretty clear line, and the Supreme Court has done this for decades, that our First Amendment, our free speech tradition, protects almost all speech,” Carr told POLITICO’s Alex Burns on stage at the POLITICO AI & Tech Summit.

Romania’s Prosecutor General: Our country was the target of large, hybrid campaigns in the context of the 2024 elections
(auto-translation via Firefox)
Romania's Prosecutor General Alex Florence said on Tuesday that Romania was the preferred target of large, hybrid campaigns in the context of the 2024 elections.
“From the investigations carried out at the level of the General Prosecutor’s Office, the conclusion can be drawn at this moment, based on some elements that we will present to you in detail in the following, regarding the fact that Romania has been the main target of some large, hybrid campaigns, in the context of the electoral elections in 2024, the hostile actors aiming at the continuous modeling of the public opinion, the destabilization of the decision-making capacity of the authorities and the dilution of the degree of cohesion.
He explained that this campaign was manifested by cyber attacks and measures to destabilize public order.
“The campaign launched in the Romanian space was manifested both through cyber attacks, measures to destabilize the public order, as well as through campaigns to micro-target the population, disinformation and influence the electorate. On this level was highlighted the offensive character of the hybrid aggressions targeting Romania, which exploited, on the one hand, the vulnerabilities of the national audiences, both through the versatile use of social platforms, respectively by eluding the policies present at their level on the way of promoting the people in the political spectrum, as well as by social engineering techniques aimed at segmenting the population in order to further deliver personalized messages to the audiences.
“Hybrid warfare, by comparing it to traditional warfare, which is more obvious, more transparent, in terms of the material results it produces, is much more insidious, but with results of influencing the way in which the social-economic life of a much larger state is carried out. Because it involves the use in parallel, together or separately, but clearly coordinated, of several types of instruments targeting a state, whether we are talking about different economic, administrative instruments, cyber attacks, secret actions destabilizing for the public order of that state, political subversion and, of course, disinformation and propaganda,” explained Alex Florence.
He noted that certain news that may seem isolated is part of a conjugated effort.
“It is important to make these clarifications for the public to understand that certain news that may sometimes seem disparate, isolated, unnecessitated, unrelated, are, in fact, part of a conjugated war and an effort conjoined as a distinct part of these hybrid warfare instruments,” the attorney general said.
He also said that cyber-attacks are not random or isolated events.
“As far as cyber attacks are concerned, we have to understand that news of the kind that has been circulated in the public space, regarding attacks on Romanian airports a few years ago, of an entire system of surveillance cameras, especially in the border area with Ukraine, or the attacks during the course of 2024 on many public institutions and government agencies in Romania are not random events, they are not isolated events, but once again they are part of a generally coordinated hybrid attack.
He added that the reports he transmits weekly by the National Directorate of Cybernetics Security on his website highlights precisely the frequency, amplitude and especially how these attacks are carried out.
Alex Florence also recalls the fact that Russian cyberattacks intensified on Romanian institutions and companies in 2024.
“The most dangerous attacks, especially those of ransomware, were fully associated with pro-Russian groups such as Lockbit, Lynx, Akira or Ransom Hub and stood out for a particularly intense activity last year. These attacks targeted more than 13 public administration institutions, 12 transport companies of national interest, 17 banking institutions and so on. Also, with strict reference to the electoral process carried out last year, we must take into account that more than 85,000 cyber attacks launched on the electoral infrastructure that aimed to obtain and exfiltrate credentials especially from the Central Electoral Authority and the Central Electoral Bureau, around that period, many of which were subsequently disseminated in groups of Telegram from Russian infrastructure,” the Prosecutor General said.
He said the destabilizing actions that may seem to be isolated elements are part of a coordinated campaign targeting Romania, but also other Eastern European states.
“We recall on this occasion the situation of 2024 of the Colombian citizen, arrested for entering Romania under the coordination of a certain person from Russia with the intention of blowing up objectives located in the proximity of a complex in Ilfov County, where there was a degenerative landfill, as well as two oil extraction wells and a natural gas measuring station,” explained Alex Florence.
Similar actions have taken place in other eastern European states
He said similar actions took place in the Czech Republic and Poland.
“It is worth noting that similar situations are found in other Eastern European states at the same time, when again both in Prague, in the Czech Republic and in Poland, then those actions having the expected result, producing an attack on some often critical infrastructure and in all these are also involved in Colombian citizens. What shows us from the investigations carried out, the fact that behind these coordinated, destabilizing attacks at the level of internal public order, there is coordination on the part of a foreign state actor and with the direct coordination of these political persons engaged and engaged especially in the South American area, the penetration in the Eastern European countries and the conduct of this type of attack,” the Prosecutor General of Romania stated.
He stressed that another component of hybrid warfare is political subversion that can take on different components.
“We are talking, on the one hand, about careful cultivation and often below the limit of detection of some media affairs networks, but also internal political sources, able to influence in one form or another government decisions. We remember the relations and visits made to the Russian embassy and developed in the last two years by several Romanian parliamentarians. But an important element that is found in the Romanian space is at the moment the instrumentation of the Romanian extremist groups. We also remember the case of Marian Moţoc, a character sent to court by the Prosecutor’s Office this year and who had entered into direct coordination with the Embassy of the Russian Federation at that time, in this case with the Russian military attaché,” said Alex Florence.
Intensifying extremist messages in November 2024
He also explained that in November 2024, at the level of extremist communities, there was an intensification of hateful and violent messages.
“We must bear in mind that, starting in November 2024, at the level of extremist communities, there has been an increase in narratives and messages inciting hatred and violence associated with the campaign to promote an independent candidate and have created a climate of panic at the level of society. This increase in the volume of instigating content incriminating violent actions was initiated since the first round of elections, but the evolution is systematically achieved by promoting elements of hate incitement content, generated through artificial intelligence.
He said this narrative corresponds to the pattern in which the Russian Federation operates.
“This type of narratives and the way of making the online content correspond to the shareholding pattern of the Russian Federation, being reported in other states, such as Moldova or Georgia. Also, pro-Russian propaganda channels were used, as we will see the promotion of these elements of content”, explained Alex Florence.
He said that even at the level of social media, inciting hateful and violent actions were identified.
“Last but not least, ,at the level of social networks, hateful messages were identified in violent actions, including against the authorities, most of the threats being outlined around the idea of general upheaval, the messages containing phrases that exploited nostalgic feelings by making the majority reference to the Revolution of December 1989. It is an inflation of such messages in the online area, created with artificial intelligence, which proves an absolutely artificial behavior, but which generates a tension, a state of effervescence among the communities to which they are addressed and, obviously, these messages are subsequently taken over and viralized from various extremist groups at the national level”, declared the Prosecutor General.
Revolution's Hashtag, used in disinformation campaigns
He exemplified this situation with the hashtag of the Revolution.
“It’s a hashtag behind which a whole range of messages of this kind of hate and violence have been viralized around the first juror of the presidential laws. It is a hashtag that comes and is launched somewhere from Russian infrastructure on Telegram channels. He is subsequently viralized through a whole support infrastructure. He is automatically associated with two of the former independent candidate’s hashtags and reaches a peak of viralization at more than 1,800,000 daily views and 176 videos posted daily, all with the same type and the same version of the message,” said Alex Florence.
The Prosecutor General specified that since November 27, 2024, an intensification of the campaign to promote the independent candidate in the presidential elections has been found.
“Analyses have shown that since November 27 there has been an increase in the campaign to promote the presidential candidate at the level of groups known for the dissemination of disinformation narratives, which ensure the connection between the pro-Russian community and other communities generating risks for public order, especially extremist and conspiracist groups.
Thus, narratives were identified through which the candidate is promoted at the level of over 40 groups of this type and totaled over 1,300,000 members. Well, all these actions to promote hateful content reveal an artificial behavior, as I said, the intensity of social effervescences, with that huge volume of content of this type, being manifestly disproportionate to the manifestations in the public space, from the real physical space. This outlines the specific hypothesis of influencing the information space in order to amplify some states of dissatisfaction that are vacavable then by generating large-scale street actions,” the Prosecutor General stated.
He also presented how the Romanian population was targeted to identify certain admissible narratives.
“We must understand that the online ecosystem currently used by actors in the Russian Federation are looking at a wide range of tools, starting from traditional state media sites and components, which are spreading, starting to create certain news and will also be found in Romania and further spread through various websites and blogs created especially for the creation and spread of this content. They are also used in this firm troll toolkit, for those who do not understand what they are talking about fake accounts, those that emminate an official account, and who claim authentic users and entire networks of bots. These are tools that artificially amplify the visibility of a certain content, either through comments or by complimentary clicks and so on,” the Prosecutor General said.

Having trouble with sonarr downloads
So, I have my arr stack set up to queue downloads through qbittorrent and I've tweaked my release/delay profiles to 720 minutes after release. For some reason my modified version of Sonarr is trying to grab my requested linux .iso's before the official release. Fortunately, I have .mp4 and .mkv filtered in qbittorrent so I don't end up with any of those nasty pirated tv shows, but it clogs up my download client. They'll just sit at 100% complete and seed indefinitely because all the content is filtered to "do not download".
Sonarr sees this as progress in the activity tab and won't attempt to pick up the actual linux iso release when it is official.
like this
I personally use Cleanuparr, but the idea is the same. It monitors your downloads, and issues strikes for anything that fails certain criteria (like being stalled, or downloading metadata, or downloading too slow). If a download collects too many strikes, Cleanuparr will remove it and automatically tell the *arr service to block the download and retry the search. It also includes file extension blocking, to automatically block and retry the junk “Fantastic_Four_First_Steps_(1080p).mkv.exe” types of scam posts.
Unfortunately, the Sonarr devs have specifically said that they have no interest in including a “delay searching until after the official release date” option. Their response to the issue has basically been “use better trackers where those fakes don’t get posted.”
