Lemmy Release v0.19.13

What is Lemmy?

Lemmy is a self-hosted social link aggregation and discussion platform. It is completely free and open, and not controlled by any company. This means that there is no advertising, tracking, or secret algorithms. Content is organized into communities, so it is easy to subscribe to topics that you are interested in, and ignore others. Voting is used to bring the most interesting items to the top.

Changes

This version fixes a handful of bugs. Most importantly it prevents a background task from blocking the Lemmy server entirely. Edit marks on comments are now hidden if it was edited within 5 minutes of creation. Also the browser cache usage is significantly reduced. Additionally ARM builds are fixed by using the default memory allocator on that platform.

Backend

  • Fixing active counts slow queries. by @dessalines in #5907
  • Only use mimalloc on x86 and purge images in background task by @Nutomic in #5893

  • Dont sanitize RSS content manually (fixes #5850) by @Nutomic in #5852
  • Reduce false positives in URL blocklist to reduce scunthorpe problem by @Nothing4You in #5807

Upgrade instructions

There are no breaking changes with this release.

Follow the upgrade instructions for ansible or docker.

If you need help with the upgrade, you can ask in our support forum or on the Matrix Chat.

Thanks to everyone

We'd like to thank our many contributors and users of Lemmy for coding, translating, testing, and helping find and fix bugs. We're glad many people find it useful and enjoyable enough to contribute.

Support development

We (@dessalines and @nutomic) have been working full-time on Lemmy for over five years. This is largely thanks to support from NLnet foundation, as well as donations from individual users.

If you like using Lemmy, and want to make sure that we will always be available to work full time building it, consider donating to support its development. A recurring donation is the best way to ensure that open-source software like Lemmy can stay independent and alive, and helps us grow our little developer co-op to support more full-time developers.

in reply to Dessalines

Once again, thanks a lot for your hard work!

Good thing that not all my posts will show up as edited now 😄 And community-specific search is very handy!

Freedom Flotilla member & supporter group chat shut down by Whatsapp

SMH @ activists using techno-fascist platforms for communications during an operation subject to state-actor level interference. I thought we recognised and acknowledged this problem 15-20 years ago already.

in reply to rcbrk

Yeah, that's curious. I'd think they'd be prepared with Signal at the very least and some backup self-hosted channel, as well as cameras and backup cell hotspots.
in reply to Avid Amoeba

they were prepared for the drone hit the other day; so hopefully for this as well.
in reply to eldavi

I'd imagine they could have a few spread out boats further and further behind, each with its own cell hotspot, beaming WiFi all around, so that they have to be jammed simultaneously to stop the livestreams from capturing the attacks.
in reply to Avid Amoeba

it sounds like it would be easier to pick them off one-by-one if they were far apart.
in reply to eldavi

What difference would that make? If someone who does have big guns wants to take them out, they're going to end up at the bottom of the sea regardless of how clustered the boats are.
in reply to fodor

I think the notoriety is the point; since this flotilla is incapable of carrying anywhere near enough supplies to make a dent for the gazans; and also what netantayu desperately wants to avoid so that this can be more easily ignored; like everything else so far.

Sinking boats filled with famous people and foreign nationals whose gov'ts who would be forced to respond on their citizens' well-being would bring more attention and pressure; which is exactly what netantayu wants to avoid.

We saw the western govts pressure isreal by pretending to push for recognition of Gaza and the isrealis responded w air supply drops; more pressure might force them to stop slowly killing the Gazans.

Fun fact - its called 'Indian' but was introduced by Bangladeshi immigrants. Also, dishes such as Tikka Masala can legit be considered 'British'.

Alternative phone OS

Hi. I know the most privacy-oriented (and best-working) phone OS is GrapheneOS, but I was wondering about other, less well-known ones, such as VollaOS (modified Android), Sailfish OS or Ubuntu Touch. Are they private? Do they work? Can I run Android applications on them (VollaOS and SailfishOS) without too much effort? I like using Linux, but I rely on many Android apps, such as navigation, mobile banking, the Garmin app, and many others. Do you have any experience with these operating systems?
in reply to mmattq

My only problem with Graphene is that it only works on Pixel phones, which means supporting Google.

Note that most mobile banking apps will not work without Google services installed, no matter what you use, so you give up privacy just by using those.

in reply to BlameTheAntifa

Always buy second hand. You'll save the environment, save some cash and avoid enriching google all at the same time.

Doesn't have to be an old one either. You can find Pixels on eBay that have a few weeks or months use or unwanted upgrades.

Ubuntu Council corrects forum moderator's interpretation of rules relating to queerness

Was surprised no one bothered to post this give how big of a reaction this story got.

Wanted to post the update and correction cause that deserves to be seen just as much. This seems like a reasonable, thoughtful handling of the issue.

I still don't really wanna use Ubuntu though 😅

in reply to Mwa

so it never happened?

please say it never happened because it sounds terrifying to me.

Over confidence in VPNs

Over confidence in VPNs

I found this to be an interesting watch in layering security/ privacy rather than throwing the hail mary at a VPN and expecting it to keep you anonymous.

youtu.be/1opKW6X88og?si=1XgJj2…

in reply to Suspiciousbrowsing

VPNs primarily give you privacy from your local ISP, not necessarily anonymity. And the VPN provider then takes on the role of ISP and has the technical ability to inspect your traffic as it goes by. They may agree not to do that in the one-sided non-negotiable unilaterally-updatable ToS they offer you, but you have no means of knowing if they stick to it, and they almost certainly have carve outs in the terms to comply with local (to them) law enforcement demands.
in reply to trailee

I'm somewhat trusting of Mullvad, since they've actually been raided by police who walked away empty-handed which IMO demonstrates that they're not bullshitting about not logging anything. But yeah as you say, that could always change in the future.
in reply to Random Dent

As a wise person once said, "No company is going to break the law for you."

It's fine to have some trust in your services, but it should never be without exception. The responsibility for privacy is always ours to ensure.

in reply to Telorand

I have a reasonable amount of trust in my VPN. They've been audited as early as 2024 by several indepentent agencies. They have proved their 'no logs' boast in court for quite a few instances. Even when servers were confiscated, there was no usable data found. So I feel reasonably confident in their service. However, that doesn't mean I completely trust them.
in reply to irmadlad

What independent agencies? Are they not-for-profits or are they paid by the VPN provider?
in reply to Suspiciousbrowsing

But a small VPS, setup your own wireguard instead of relying on 3rd party VPN services

(EU) Cheap Prepaid SIM with little to no top up requirement?

Was forced to use WhatsApp a while ago and didn't want to give Facebook my phone number.

Got a pretty cheap prepaid SIM, forced myself through the KYC, used it for close to a year without issues. Now they want me to top it up with at least 15€ to avoid cancelation. Surely there's a cheaper way?

Edit: Looking to buy one in Germany

Questa voce è stata modificata (1 mese fa)
in reply to funkycarrot

Forced to use WhatsApp? How does that work? Whoever "forced" you to do so didn't provide you a phone?

You can probably get a local eSIM with a phone number, e.g. telekom.de/unterwegs/esim but AFAICT that's also KYC, unlike data-only eSIMs, so that might not help you much, depends on your threat model (e.g. does T-Mobile share data with Meta or not).

Questa voce è stata modificata (1 mese fa)
in reply to utopiah

It's the good old network effect. Telekom appears to be kind of expensive but getting an eSIM in general appears to be a valid (and likely cheaper) option.

Has China ever expressed interest in joining NATO? Was there ever actually a declinature?

New Zealand also isn't part of NATO, does that mean NATO are imperialists AND flightless bird haters?

Or is this another way I'm blinded by western media and China has been begging to get into NATO and they're just not reporting it in my sheeple network?

Edit: lol not a Chinese flag, I am blind and phone screen is small. My bad. Replace China with USSR then I guess?

Edit2: my first edit makes it seem like I meant that this comment still makes sense with USSR in place of China. That's not what mean, so to clarify, Im an idiot and this whole comment can be ignored ❤️

This is the flag of the USSR, not China. China has 5 stars.

New Zealand also isn't part of NATO, does that mean NATO are imperialists AND flightless bird haters?

NATO has always been an anticommunist war machine principally aimed at the USSR and its allies. It was originally staffed with actual Nazis, too.

Or is this another way I'm blinded by western media and China has been begging to get into NATO and they're just not reporting it in my sheeple network?

I mean you seem to just not know the history or the references being made but are knee-jerk anticommunist anyways, so maybe you should do some self-criticism about humility and politics.

in reply to Kirca

This is about that time Putin tried to join NATO but was told "no".

Also that's not the Chinese flag.

Oh yeah, just replace them, they're completely interchangeable bad guy countries, after all.

in reply to BrainInABox

I mean, I provided a second edit to clarify before this comment but if you want to ignore that, sure. I wrote the edits at around 3am which is why it read badly and I did the second one as soon as I realised the implication.

How to enable wake on lan such that computer turns on when I try to access IP?

Edit: I've got a mini computer that could wake up the big one.
Questa voce è stata modificata (1 mese fa)
in reply to LiveLM

Yeah, I just don't know what those terms mean lol

I was asking which one I need to choose to wake my server io whenever I try sending packets to it

in reply to silly goose meekah

Oh. Sorry I'm not well versed in networking to know either lol.
I'd suggest querying which modes your card supports with the command listed, and enable them all except "g" which is magic packet, then give it a test.

in reply to idriss

Words can be weapons as well. Not all who slay beasts do so with metal.
in reply to brem

Usually both are necessary, and relying only on words and not on actual organizing and coherent force ends up costing far more human lives than just committing to revolution. Non-violence just means your enemies get to use violence on you unopposed.

What do all these mean?

I get the first three and the last two but the others. When I switch them, they don't really seem to do anything except for the Show Avatars option which toggles the avatars. These settings also doesn't seem to exist in other frontends (like Blorp).

I just checked whatever sounded/looked good.

in reply to PragmaticIdealist

Blorp dev here. I’m trying to decide what settings to support. Blorp is both PieFed and Lemmy, and supporting all features from both could get really complicated. So I’m starting simple and I’m going to add the features that get requested the most.

Edit: also forgot to mention iOS will reject Blorp form the app store if it has a "NSFW" toggle, but there is no reason I can't add that to Blorp when distributed outside the App Store.

EU prepares to give US direct access to police and immigration databases

cross-posted from: lemmy.zip/post/48322335

The EU is planning to strike a deal with the US that would let the Department of Homeland Security and other agencies search European databases to identify people posing “a threat to US security,” according to a proposal published by the European Commission at the end of July.

in reply to schizoidman

Specifics matter. I would be fine with an endpoint that given the passport/id card allows to do a basic check for any severe offenses - as often performed for childcare jobs, too.

Anything beyond that sounds bad.

Questa voce è stata modificata (1 mese fa)
in reply to VoxAliorum

Why? Who cares about "offenses" of a random traveler. Why do you trust an international crime db to be accurate?
in reply to PowerCrazy

Most care about severe offenses. Trust is not binary. Please make your point or I feel like this is getting nowhere.
in reply to VoxAliorum

If the offenses are note-worthy, they should be in jail. If not then no-one needs to be aware of them.

Need suggestions to compartmentalizing a Samsung phone

I love the profile feature from GrapheneOS. The idea of having different profiles with different settings (one for all Google apps, one for non Google...etc) is very nice. But Graphene only works on Pixel. I dont have a Pixel so I am trying to replicate this profile behavior on an S24 - what I currently use.

Why do I want to do this?

  • Every where is turning into police states with very heavy censorships. In my country (not US), we start to see bullshit stuff like a cop would stop you in the middle of the road and demand you to open the phone. If they see things they dont like (could be as random as an app name), you'll get arrested. It is not as severe as a forensic test of the phone, but more like a road stop where they check your phone instead of your license.
  • it is nice to organize stuff.

What does Samsung have?

  • Secure Folder
  • Work Profile - can be setup with Shelter

What do I want to achieve?

  • a dummy profile with the bare minimum to run Google Play updates and other basic stuff.
  • All my important data will be in Secure Folder or Work profile.

What I plan to do:

  • setup the phone using a blank Google account. No emails or syncs whatsoever.
  • put all critical data (personal Google, bank apps, private emails, cloud storages, files, media...etc) in the Secure Folder. Locked using my own pass, and do not use Samsung Cloud. No Samsung account.
  • put frequently used personal data in Work Profile. These are things like messengers (Telegram, Signal, Whatsapp....etc), contacts, emails (not the private one).

I'm still new to this so appreciate any input.

Using GOS profiles is extremely tedious. Using the work profile is stupid simple and easy. That's what I use.

Qatar reacts to Israel’s unprecedented Doha strike, NATO shoots down Russian drones over Poland, Mass anti-government protests in France

cross-posted from: lemmy.ml/post/35980267

At least 20 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks since dawn. The number of Palestinians in Gaza who have died from malnutrition and starvation tops 400. The United Nations says that more than 110,000 people were forcibly displaced in Gaza in August. Qatar’s prime minister said the Israeli strike on Doha “reflects only the barbarism of Netanyahu.” Polish and NATO forces shoot down several Russian drones that violated Polish airspace during strikes on Ukraine. The Trump administration struggles to put a lid on the Epstein scandal. Nepali police are dispatched to bring some order to the capital after yesterday’s protests. An Islamic State affiliate kills more than 50 at a funeral in the Congo’s North Kivu province. British MPs express “grave concern” over Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s scheduled visit to the UK, citing Genocide Convention. Hundreds arrested in France in widespread anti-government protests.

Matrix? No, thanks. — Hackea documentació

The article alleges that Matrix:

  • has links to Israeli intelligence.
  • sends a lot of sensitive data to matrix.org servers, even when Synapse is self-hosted.

Is this information accurate?

To be clear, I'm not saying Matrix is bad. I'm still using it. I just want to know more about it and who's running the show, and hear other people's opinions and arguments. Thanks for all the insightful comments.

in reply to Autonomous User

Yeah, we will have much success converting people from WhatsApp and shit by telling them to run their own servers /s. If a non technical friend asks me what to use instead and I'll advise them to use Matrix, you can be sure they'll go to app store, install Element and register at matrix.org. So I do want to know if it's operated by Mossad before I send my friends there.
in reply to Tad Lispy

If your friend's hiding from Mossad, I think they'll know to get it from F-Droid and turn on end-to-end encryption.

I am LOVING Proton's new AI, Lumo! Are there any concerns I need to take with Proton as a company? Heard something recently about them getting fashy.

in reply to stupid_asshole69 [none/use name]

That's all the person said to me about it. If you're a follower and frequent user of proton and are saying everything is alright then I'll go with that after a bit of research.
in reply to Catalyst_A

What proton offers as a paid service is compelling. It does give you the opportunity to provide metadata that can be used against you, which is how the legitimate concern over its cooperation with law enforcement played out.

I would recommend against choosing security or privacy services based on the politics of their c-suite. In a lot of ways it’s similar to getting firearm training or equipment. You might feel like you’re materially supporting your enemy, but specifically in this particular political moment you aren’t in a position to sus out the depth or veracity of someone’s expressed politics and the point is to get the right understanding, equipment and systems, not to vote with your dollars.

Further, you want to understand how the system you’re purchasing access to works. Email, for example, cannot be private without some sort of additional cryptography. SMTP is best effort only, and even in the case that the system doesn’t fall back to unencrypted transmission, it relies on certs that are often spoofed by the end users isp as a matter of course and allow mitm attacks.

Information input to an llm will be used as a training dataset later on down the line so that means anything you use the llm for shines the panopticon beam onto you.

Why is it so hard to get friends to leave Discord, WhatsApp, Instagram, and others? Anyone else feel this?

I’ve been seeing this more and more in comments, and it’s got me wondering just how big this issue really is. A lot of people feel trapped in apps like Discord, WhatsApp, and Instagram, but can’t get their friends to leave.

It’s really annoying when you suggest trying something new, whether it’s a different app or just not using these platforms so much but sometimes it can feel like no one wants to go first.

So I’m curious, what apps do you feel most trapped in? And have you tried convincing your friends to leave them? What happened? Is it an issue for you, or are you just going along with the flow?

Looking forward to hearing if this is as common as it feels!

So like, this is always seemingly done from a content CONSUMER point of view.

How can we provide content creators a safety net whom we as fans enjoy their content but said artists need to have their name and face out in the open? Particularly music artists/DJs/independent artists/etc?

I swear, anyone wanting privacy, just start calling yourself an artist and boom suddenly nobody can find any information about you! You don't even have to be serious about it, just take a crayola to a bar napkin... /s

Phone hacked?

I was trying to post some meme on Kirk I had in the phone.

Tried to send to my mail (and then post from desktop), and they didn't came in mailbox.

I tried with cable to get the files I download from Lemmy won't be copied.

Now my gmail is locked and seems kinda refreshing on the phone (workong on pc).

Isn't weird???

Your phone just sounds broken, honestly. Take it to service if a power-off/on reboot doesn't resolve it. Maybe try to clear/reinstall the mail app and see if that helps.

I dunno how people here feel about Banksy but I've always quite liked this quote:

People are taking the piss out of you everyday. They butt into your life, take a cheap shot at you and then disappear. They leer at you from tall buildings and make you feel small. They make flippant comments from buses that imply you’re not sexy enough and that all the fun is happening somewhere else. They are on TV making your girlfriend feel inadequate. They have access to the most sophisticated technology the world has ever seen and they bully you with it. They are The Advertisers and they are laughing at you.

You, however, are forbidden to touch them. Trademarks, intellectual property rights and copyright law mean advertisers can say what they like wherever they like with total impunity.

Fuck that. Any advert in a public space that gives you no choice whether you see it or not is yours. It’s yours to take, re-arrange and re-use. You can do whatever you like with it. Asking for permission is like asking to keep a rock someone just threw at your head.

You owe the companies nothing. Less than nothing, you especially don’t owe them any courtesy. They owe you. They have re-arranged the world to put themselves in front of you. They never asked for your permission, don’t even start asking for theirs.

Yes... We're a long way down the rathole of neoliberal economic dogma's hegemony over the position of the 'Overton Window' in our thinking and in our lives. Society is being overpowered by economic dogma to meekly become 'Consumers' instead of autonomous Citizens of a Democratic State.

in reply to Bidah

Subject is relevant and interesting, as I was exploring the increased polarisation, and reached similar conclusions. It hit me hard, so I'll check it out later.

tnx4 sharing

in reply to Bidah

The article itself point out it uses an intuitive approach to point out the need for an autonomous zone. Our daily life can be a constant digital bombardment to diverse your attention, energy &money. It can become hard to remain "yourself with a soul", and retain awareness of what truly matters.

This is a choice: " It's essential to use free time for something beyond mere entertainment technology or work. Any contact with the body and analog reality is vital. Go for a walk, run, exercise, train (anything), spend time with friends, have barbecue, cook , garden or have plants , play a board game, read a book, write in a notebook, ride a skateboard , bike, or roller skates, go to a plaza, learn to knit, make pottery (?). The possibilities are endless."

He references three thinkers, and has a sort of socialist/ pure marxist/ classical anarchist context of how to view, politics, society, power versus the ideal of freedom, autonomy and growth.

An underlying assumption, is basically that corporations, states (& many intenties probably) don't have the best interest and at best are manipulative/ coercive. Which is basically true, as they want to make money or maintain status quo.

For the less privileged persons ( ie most of humanity), this can become a major problem.

Imo, if we were to use the old word" capital" in this century it would translate to "informationpower" . Whomever controls information is the capitalists of this age.

On personal note, the currentPolarisation, which is actively being created, and dispersed via al modern media, has amplified and created spheres of constant discomfort, fear, hate and violence. Information has become less about social cohesion and connection, but more about fallouts , disconnection and chaos and distrust.
And, this sentiment is being fed by the algorithm.

It's relevant to be aware how mindcontrol, propaganda_ marketing, information spaces, brain body soul functions work. Just as he said. Though he uses more fancy wordings for all that.

NVIDIA are investing $5 billion in Intel to develop new chips together

I think this means Intel's Arc GPUs are dead. $5 Billion seems like a small price to pay for NVIDIA to remove a potential future competitor off the market.
in reply to fuzzywombat

Not sure they were incapable of improving, but they were definitely behind everything else, especially on drivers.

The likely result of this is licensing NVIDA for igpu design. Seems anti competitive, but should catch up to AMD, and better for consumers as long as AMD not killed by it.

When Africa’s internet breaks, this ship answers the call

As the Léon Thévenin eased into Cape Town port last month, Shuru Arendse was ready to rush home to his family. He had a month off and a laundry list of to-do’s: fix a leaky tap, patch a hole in the roof, take his two children to the trampoline park.

But halfway through Arendse’s leave, there was a phone call: An undersea internet cable off Angola was malfunctioning. The Thévenin, the only cable repair ship permanently stationed in Africa, was heading off to fix it, and Arendse was needed. He is a cable jointer — one of a handful of people on the continent who know how to splice cables together.

Working on an internet cable repair ship is grueling but rewarding — and never more important than in today’s hyperconnected world, a handful of the Thévenin’s crew members told Rest of World. This report is based on three years of observations and two weeks onboard the ship.

“I’m trying to save a country from losing its data or communication,” Arendse said. “I love the challenge of it; it’s never the same.”

Data races from people’s devices over terrestrial networks to exchange points and data centers, where it is routed and sometimes sent abroad through massive undersea internet cables. Some of these stretch thousands of kilometers across ocean floors before surfacing at distant cable-landing stations and rejoining land-based internet.

With the artificial intelligence boom, the infrastructure through which data travels has taken on more importance, Steve Song, senior director of infrastructure mapping at the nonprofit Internet Society, told Rest of World.

Morso Di Vipera: Panico a Parte, Quasi Sempre Si Risolve Con Un Grande Spavento!

Non si vuole di certo minimizzare il morso di vipera equiparandolo alla puntura di una zanzara, ma ci sono troppe leggende attorno a questo incidente e serve attenzione e, sopratutto, niente panico!

Can Zohran Mamdani Really Freeze the Rent?: Here’s a guide on what a possible Mayor Mamdani can and can’t do.

He’s said it over and over again on the campaign trail, a consistent drumbeat of a promise: If elected, Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani will freeze your rent.

“I’m running for mayor to freeze the rent for every rent-stabilized tenant,” he said in a campaign ad unveiled in late May. “Wait, you’re going to freeze my rent?” asks an actor playing a tenant. Mamdani comes back on screen: “Yes.”

But does the mayor of New York City actually have the power to stop rent increases in one of the most expensive cities in the world?

Not directly. But they definitely have the power to appoint people who could make it happen — and Mamdani wouldn’t be the first New York City mayor to oversee a rent freeze. Here’s what you need to know about the process:

Emails suggest that a Trump-friendly business is getting relief on tariffs from the government

The Trump administration is working to give some MAGA-friendly businesses special relief from President Donald Trump’s tariffs, per documents reviewed exclusively by Salon.

“We are trying to help him from the SBA side with a loan,” Grayson said of his own efforts to help Busbice’s business.

What is unusual about the exchange between Busbice and Grayson is that the former’s case was being directly handled by the deputy chief of staff, a senior SBA position.

Busbice’s social media displays clear pro-Trump messaging, including multiple favorable references to Trump and his allies. A pinned post on Instagram from last year includes a photo of him and the president together. The documents also reveal that the two were connected by Tyler Daniel, a former political director at the Scalise Leadership Fund, a fundraising committee for Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La. and other Republican political efforts. Daniel currently works at FTI Consulting.

Samsung brings ads to US fridges

A software update rolling out to Samsung’s Family Hub refrigerators in the US is putting ads on the fridges for the first time. The “promotions and curated advertisements” are coming despite Samsung insisting to The Verge in April that it had “no plans” to do so.

‘The dungeon’ at Louisiana’s notorious prison reopens as Ice detention center

Advocates swiftly objected to the reopening of Camp J, noting its history of brutality and violence. Ronald Marshall served 25 years in the Louisiana prison system, including a number of them in solitary confinement at Camp J, and called it the worst place he ever served time.

“It was horrible,” Marshall said.

It turns out, however, that Landry’s emergency order and the renovation of Camp J was not done to accommodate the state’s own growing prison population. It was in service of Donald Trump’s nationwide immigration crackdown.

Email on your own domain: Yep, super easy.

Email from home IP or from the IPv4 you get assigned with a VPS: Super difficult

It's anything but easy. You have to worry about running a server, getting blacklisted, dealing with SPF records, etc. etc.

Rant Post on The Guardian because they can't be trusted

Article Headline:

Poverty in California remains highest in US, tied with Louisiana, report says

A new report shows California has the highest poverty rate in the US, alongside Louisiana, and rates have shown little improvement.

Despite the abundant wealth in the state – more billionaires live in California than anywhere else in the US – in 2024 about 7 million people, or 17.7% of residents, could not afford to cover their basic needs. In 2021, California’s poverty rate reached a historic low of 11%, but as pandemic-era policies came to an end, rates surged in the state and across the US, according to the report from the California Budget and Policy Center released last week.

I'm thinking that this can't be true, Louisiana? That has some developing world conditions. I looked into it. Of course it's a POS research and they're trying their hardest to look like dems if you go to their site. Fuck you Guardian.

The California Policy Center (CPC) is a conservative[2] and libertarian[3] public policy think tank located in California. Based in Tustin, the organization specializes in union policy, pension reform, spending reform, and school choice.[4] CPC was founded in 2010 by Marc Bucher and Edward Ring.[5] It is a member of the State Policy Network, an association of state-based conservative and libertarian think tanks.

[6]CPC has partnered with groups such as Reform California, the Freedom Foundation, the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation, and the Mackinac Center for Public Policy in campaigns to reduce the power of California's unions.[9][10] CPC has also joined with the Center for Individual Rights to challenge a California law forbidding public employers from speech deterring or discouraging union membership in any way.[11]
[12] Pension reform

CPC says that California's employee pension program places strain on the budgets of the state and of local governments.[13] CPC has also analyzed how the state pension "defined benefit" style system and changes in the amount of the benefit have affected the state’s budget liability.[14]

Greg Abbott, (R gov. of Texas), signed into law a bill that lets people sue anyone suspected of manufacturing, distributing or mailing abortion pills to or from Texas.

Under the new law, which will take effect 4 December, abortion providers could face penalties of at least $100,000 if they mail pills into the state, which bans virtually all abortions. Pharmaceutical manufacturers who make drugs that Texans use for abortions could also be found liable, but they may be able to defend themselves by proving in court that they adopted and implemented “a policy to not distribute, mail, transport, deliver, provide, or possess abortion-inducing drugs” – though the language of the law is somewhat ambiguous on whether that provision applies to Texas or more broadly. Women who take abortion pills are not eligible to be sued.

Her Safe Harbor, an organization that uses shield laws to mail abortion pills to people and received one of Paxton’s cease-and-desist letters, has no plans to block Texans from its services, said Debra Lynch, a nurse practitioner who works with the group, in an interview before Abbott signed the law. In fact, as the Texas law neared passage in the state legislature, Her Safe Harbor started receiving so many requests for help from patients that it had to double its number of abortion providers, according to Lynch.

“Even if a law was passed that said they would come after us criminally and not civilly – that would not have any impact whatsoever on the services that we provide,” Lynch said. “It’s important that women know that.”

My Patched Pants [Rule]

Yes I patched them myself

Yes I know the patches stick out

And yes I do wear them out and about

EDIT: The back also has a few patches for those curious.

Nice job, they look great. In my experience, though, you either need the patch on the inside or be attentive when putting on the pants. I've got one pair I keep ripping open because I hook the patches with my feet. Yet I keep patching them on the outside because now it'd look silly to have half in and half out.
