Casting a brown skinned woman as Snow White will never not be silly.
It's similar to Jack Reacher, it's made very clear in the books he's a tall, physically intimidating person. And they cast Tom Cruise to play him.
Grown men having strong opinions on how Disney Princesses should look will never not be silly.
There's no reason for it to matter to them.
"Strong Opinions", or just find it ridiculous?
I'm sure there's a few that were upset, but I think most people were just amused.
who gives a piss, like genuinely
beyond her name, is there any reason why snow white should be white?
and, like, even then. "brown skinned". Zegler is super pale, you’re just mad she’s not a WASP
anyways fuuuuuck disney for a bunch of reasons, but "casting POC for traditionally white roles" is not one of them.
Even the tale is perfect. Witchcraft, hate, murder, life in the forest, fantasy dwarves, a tomb, and torture. It hardly gets more black metal than that.
I'd watch that.
Would be better if they actually made new movies with different cultures stories instead of just remaking the old shit too.
They do this outrage bait on purpose though. American society is brain rotted and we need a cause to support or hate. Even in children's movies.
She, famously, has no idea how humans live. She is culturally distinct from the Europeans on the coast.
She has more in common with the fish that she speaks to. She's basically a magic dolphin.
Meanwhile, the people in the OP image are humans (to my knowledge, I'm not a nerd). Humans who have lived in the human world with human pasts full of human culture which give context to their characterization. I'm sure their background stories matter to their fans.
Nobody argues about what color the scales on Ariel's tail should be.
I'll defer to your delphine expertise. Although Snow White is the one that really got me, she's explicitly described in the text, her snow white skin is her primary physical characteristic.
Don't get me wrong, I am upset about the others, or at least as upset as is reasonable for the ethnicities of fictional characters. But consistency is consistency. I'd rather see more stories from diverse cultures than arbitrary race-switching.
no, that illustration apparently came 12 years later
anyway as an 1800s fairy tale for children, imo i think it's fine to view it through the lens of whichever culture you want. the trouble imo begins when trying to ascribe something to the story which it certainly did not contain - even that is probably basically harmless if you're just confused or something, but it certainly becomes a problem when it's used to justify unfairly shitting on someone else for a slightly different yet completely harmless alternative depiction.
Oh it’s even worse than that: they hate live action Ariel because she's “ugly”
sex+race racism is horrifically nasty, yet more common and more “accepted” in my experience.
Also, I will leave this here:
Fortunately, it’s just hypothetical, that live action doesn’t actually exist…

Basically the original heroes were vaguely Tibetan (Aang) or dark-skinned Inuit, but for the movie (that doesn't exist) they quite consistently color coded the good guys as white and the bad guys as darker skinned; the total opposite.
Aang is the Avatar, he's like the protaganist/Chosen One hero.
You should watch the cartoon, it's great! It's like really great.
do you remember the original animated "Lion King"?
all the voice actors for the Hyenas were black stereotypes...
Would they today, though?
I feel like there would be conservative 'backlash against backlash' over racebending cast.
They were like we wanted to swap the gender but we’re worried a strong Asian lady would be too Dragon Lady Stereotype. Like fuck off and cast Michelle Yeoh, she would have nailed it.
They also wanted to cut Wong, like WTF? Though ultimately making him a peer/equal instead of a servant was a great change.
How dare they cast the role of Caribbean princess as a young black girl? /s

turning a ginger character black
iirc, a lot of the times in old media creators would use red-haired people as stand-in for minorities, basically if they wanted to make a character BIPOC, but the studio wouldn’t let them, they’d make them red-haired instead
got this from hearsay so take it with a grain of salt. but if it’s true, it’s nice that the original visions can be fulfilled now!
(and even if it’s not true, more BIPOC in movies is never a bad thing, even if it comes at the cost of red-haired characters, which whatever it’s not like we’re systematically oppressed)
edit: also I’ll note that Ariel is still red-haired in the remake
it's even worse than that cos the original text never said ariel's human version race, they just assumed it lol.
and before anyone says yes but its written by a dane, my response is yes but it's a fairy tale, anything is possible. why assume and then get angry based on your assumption?

I don't know if anyone outside Australia knows Fern Gully... But anyway, years ago, watching that movie with friends I casually suggested that possibly fairies in Australia would more likely be indigenous looking than white, and got told off for "making everything political". And by migrant friends.
One of whom used to get quite offended at any implication that they were anything other than Australian.
It's a damn movie. Cast whoever is gonna play the character best. I don't care of brothers and sisters were different or if men played women or women player men.
But I'm used to the theater were roles don't have such a large talent pool.
More so, stop casting people just for their name.
I remember having an argument about the little mermaid movie years ago; the guy was complaining that a black lady was cast and I had to ask: "what do you care? You're not gonna watch it"; he looked stunned for a second and then said "yeah but still....", to which I had to reiterate "WHAT DO YOU CARE? YOU'RE NOT GONNA WATCH IT!"
Like why are grown men complaining about it at all?! We're not the target demographic!
Tom Cruise wasn't the last samurai in that film. He witnessed the last samurai, Katsumoto, played by Ken Watanabe.
It's confusing because Tom Cruise is on all the posters.
I get the point of the meme and all that, but that whole thing about calling out Scarlet Witch for being played by someone that’s white is kinda troublesome to me.
Wanda’s dad is Magneto, a Jewish white guy. Her mom isn’t mentioned much but she’s Romani, which is its own ethnicity; and ethnicity is not a skin tone.
Yeah Romani in Western Europe are often white passing or straight up white, and mircrakagovia or wherever they are from is quite obviously an eastern Europe analogue.
Scarlet witch is probably white, maybe a bit swarthy

Questions after coming from Lemmy
Hi folks,
I was using Lemmy for the better part of two years and thought I'd come over to piefed and see what's up. A few things puzzled me and I'm hoping this is the best place to ask.
- It seems all top level comments are locked for replies - is that a server thing? A federation thing?
- Scrolling through All, the content just... stops. I'm using the Boost client (maybe that's why?). I get it if I'm sorting by top hour - there's only so much posted per hour. But it's the same for Hot, Scaled, Active, etc.
Edit: looks like both of these are issues with the Boost client. Switching to Summit on Android resolves both.
Thanks for the help!
- I don't see this. Can I get a link to an example?
- Is your only experience so far usiing the Boost client?
Sorry about that. Piefed just had a new version release last week and part of that included some changes to the api that mobile clients use. Boost has been a bit slower to update than some of the others. It's unfortunate really, because Boost is my favorite mobile app for lemmy, but the updates can be slow. The good news is that we aren't planning any more breaking changes to the api going forward, so once Boost is updated, it should continue working.
As an aside, I would also recommend trying piefed as a PWA. It is my preferred way of using it on a mobile device.
Hi, welcome.
The locked comments thing is a bug in Boost. I don't know why All would stop like that, it shouldn't do.

I recently went down the rabbithole of trying to find live sports streaming through IPTV and gave up on it for now.
Not sure if you’ve already seen rentry’s list of free IPTV sources, but that might help a little.
The problem with paid IPTV providers is that if they’re easy to find, they’re easy to take down — so anything you can find through a search is probably a scam or will be short-lived.
Your best bet is forums like TechKings, where users conduct subscription sales over DMs. I didn’t really want to bother with all of that, but your might be motivated enough to! Sounds like the most common advice is to only subscribe month by month to services to avoid losing money if the provider shuts down or ends up being a scam.

Comick is becoming a tracking site
~~Link in the OP is fake, please update to correct site.~~
Correction: I was wrong. Comick.dev is not fake. The base Comick.io site did briefly link to comick.dev, but the link has since been removed, likely because comick.dev was throwing errors (see screenshot below).
After looking deeper into it, here's my understanding:
- comick.io is and will remain the official website.
- comick.dev is a temp site the owner set up for building and testing the new tracker version of ComicK. It will likely disappear or be archived once development is complete.
- If your account is older than 1.5 months (the site owner was forced to remove servers with more recent data), you should be able to log in and retrieve your lists from comick.dev.
- We'll probably have to wait a couple of weeks for real news about the future of ComicK.
::: spoiler Moderator on official subreddit shows shows the .dev site is a work in progress
:::
::: spoiler Staff on official discord says comick.io and comick.dev are official and safe
:::
::: spoiler Meotimdihia (Comick site owner) says they had to remove servers, and to wait two weeks.
:::
I didn't find comick.dev, a couple of hours ago comick.io started redirecting to the .dev domain. The admin for comick.io also announced it in the discord it is not fake. It seems the website is still under progress though.
The main page doesn't redirect though but manga pages redirect to comick.dev:
comick.io/comic/00-oyasumi-pun…
New update from the admin:
- Comick has become a tracking/wiki site. So don't log in to any site where you can read manga.** If you see manga reading available, that site is fake.**
- The .live and .art domains are fake sites. Even though you might be able to log in, that's my fault. These guys hacked the old Comick server when I didn't really care about security, because Comick was just a small site and stole data. Luckily, they don't have the Comick source code, or they can't use it because it was the old version. So, they only copied Comick appearance but the source code is different.
3.** Comick lost 1.5 months of data **when I upgraded the PostgreSQL server but forgot to restart the backup process. But servers were removed -> I can't recovery these data, but Comick is continuing to build data again. Also, you could check old manga by searching in your browser's history. - Your passwords are always encrypted, so your password won't be exposed. Even I don't know what is your password.
I know Comick suddenly became a tracker/wiki, so it will lack a lot of features, but let's just wait and see.

Tobacco companies aid vape shops in push to repeal Denver flavored tobacco ban, outraising law’s backers
A campaign group seeking to overturn Denver’s ban on flavored tobacco sales in the November election has far outraised supporters of the prohibition, campaign finance records show.
The opponents of the ban, a coalition of Denver vape store owners organized as a group called “Citizen Power!,” raised $410,000 through the end of August, according to campaign finance reports filed this month. The campaign group supporting the ban, “Denver Kids vs. Big Tobacco,” raised about $245,000.
In December, the Denver City Council near-unanimously approved a ban on sales of most flavored tobacco and nicotine products after public health and children’s advocates argued the products could lure young people into a life of addiction.
The council approved the ban, which applies to any sales within city limits, despite heavy lobbying from tobacco companies and vape stores. Mayor Mike Johnston signed it.

Lawmakers and activists call for action after AP reveals US tech role in China's surveillance state
Lawmakers and activists across the political spectrum called on American tech firms to stop selling surveillance equipment to Chinese police and for Congress to examine the issue after The Associated Press reported that U.S. technology had played a far greater role than previously known in enabling human rights abuses by Beijing.
Republican Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri told AP he wanted to summon tech companies before Congress to address how their technology exports were used. Hawley, a longtime critic of U.S. technology companies, bemoaned Silicon Valley’s general lack of cooperation with Congress on that and similar inquiries.
“I think eventually we’re going to have to subpoena these people,” Hawley said.
In a post on the social media site X this month, Hawley vowed that “Big Tech must cut ties with the CCP - or face my committee,” referring to the ruling Chinese Communist Party. Hawley sits on several Senate panels that might have jurisdiction to examine technology issues
An AP investigation published this month revealed that U.S. technology companies to a large degree designed and built China’s surveillance state. Firms including IBM, Dell, and Cisco sold billions in technology to Chinese police and government agencies, despite repeated warnings that such tools were being used to quash dissent, persecute religious sects and target minorities. Companies named in AP’s reporting said they complied with all export control laws.
Yang Caiying, who told AP for its investigation about how her family was targeted by Chinese surveillance using American technology because of their activism in rural Jiangsu, said she was “shocked by the pivotal role that major U.S. tech companies have played” in her family’s ordeal. Yang is now collecting signatures for petitions urging Washington to bar U.S. firms from selling to Chinese police, both online and on the street.
Other lawmakers from both parties urged Congress to beef up export laws to prevent more American technology from being used to fuel human rights abuses abroad.
“China has been utilizing partnerships with U.S. tech companies to build malignant ‘smart cities’ that are used for mass surveillance and human rights abuses against millions of innocent Chinese people,” said Rep. John Moolenaar, a Michigan Republican who chairs the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party. The panel is charged with examining the strategic global competition between the U.S. and China.
“As executives at Nvidia and other American tech companies chase business in China, they cannot deny that their technology will be used to commit atrocities, strengthen China, and weaken America,” Moolenaar said.
Moolenaar called for American companies to work with Congress to write new laws that restrict the export of technologies that enable oppression. and work harder to keep their products from being smuggled into China.

The Fundraising-Industrial Complex Is Eating American Politics
In 2004, political campaigns spent 9 cents of every dollar raised on fundraising operations. By 2024, that number had reached 30 cents. American political campaigns are raising more and more money less and less efficiently. I’ve analyzed data from FEC disbursement records, using an algorithm I developed to classify expenditures by spending category. It reveals that campaigns are now spending 38 cents of every dollar raised just to raise more money—a fourfold increase from the 9 cents spent in 2004. In raw terms, campaigns burned through $3 billion on fundraising operations in 2024 alone. This represents a fundamental shift in how political money flows through our democracy. Twenty years ago, fundraising operations were a necessary but modest expense, like renting office space or printing yard signs. Today, it has metastasized into the primary activity of most campaigns. In 2022, 31% of total expenditures were for fundraising expenses. This came close to exceeding the 33% of total expenditures going towards advertising. If current trends hold in 2026, it’s likely that fundraising costs will for the first time exceed what is spent on advertising, thus becoming the biggest spending category.

in reply to ☆ Yσɠƚԋσʂ ☆ • • •Incidentally, the indecisiveness is a great illustration of why command structures matter. When a centralized system like Russia's encounters a problem, the government makes a plan, and everyone down the chain of command executes it. Militaries always have hierarchical organization for the same reason. Imagine if a platoon in a firefight had to take a vote on what to do next. The chain of command exists to turn a big-picture strategy into immediate, coordinated action, even when things are chaotic.
That's exactly where NATO's weakness starts to become apparent. It's a giant alliance where 32 different peers are trying to agree on what to do. Everyone has to agree, or at least not veto the plan. Getting consensus is slow, messy, and often leads to watered-down decisions that try to make everyone happy but aren't actually the best move. The whole thing has been held together by the US acting as the de facto decision maker, but now the US is starting to pull back and chaos reigns.
