Cheap Linux tablet?
Does anyone know of a cheap tablet that can run a Linux distro?
It doesn't need to be high spec - it's just for displaying photos.
Thanks!
like this
If it's just for displaying photos, why Linux? Digital picture frames are way cheap or scroungeable.
For a substitute tablet I've been interested in trying a Lenovo Yoga. It's really a laptop with a 360 degree screen hinge so you can get the keyboard out of the way. My use case of interest is reading arxiv.org pdf's in portrait mode.
I've seen digital picture frames without battery more expensive than a a basic tablet where I live 😛
(Doesn't make sense, but happens)
I recently picked up a Microsoft Surface Go 2 and installed Linux on it. Ebay is flooded with them in the USA, and I paid $90 for the tablet with the keyboard cover. The irony of Linux on a Microsoft branded tablet amuses me.
Everything but the cameras just worked. There's a kernel patch for the cameras, but I haven't been motivated to patch and recompile.
Anyone shopping for the same should keep in mind that the 8100Y CPU is twice as fast as the Pentium, and the 64gb storage option is slow eMMC while 128gb and 256gb are faster NVME.

Security Flaw Turns Unitree Robots Into Botnets
A critical vulnerability in the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Wi-Fi configuration interface used by several different Unitree robots can result in a root-level takeover by an attacker, security researchers disclosed on 20 September. The exploit impacts Unitree’s Go2 and B2 quadrupeds and G1 and H1 humanoids. Because the vulnerability is wireless, and the resulting access to the affected platform is complete, the vulnerability becomes wormable, say the researchers, meaning “an infected robot can simply scan for other Unitree robots in BLE range and automatically compromise them, creating a robot botnet that spreads without user intervention.”

Elon Musk’s SpaceX Took Money Directly From Chinese Investors, Company Insider Testifies
[...]
The recent testimony, coming from a SpaceX insider during a court case, marks the first time direct Chinese investment in the privately held company has been disclosed. While there is no prohibition on Chinese ownership in U.S. military contractors, such investment is heavily regulated and the issue is treated by the U.S. government as a significant national security concern.
“They obviously have Chinese investors to be honest,” Iqbaljit Kahlon, a major SpaceX investor, said in a deposition last year, adding that some are “directly on the cap table.” “Cap table” refers to the company’s capitalization table, which lists its shareholders.
Kahlon’s testimony does not reveal the scope of Chinese investment in SpaceX or the identities of the investors. Kahlon has long been close with the company’s leadership and runs his own firm that acts as a middleman for wealthy investors looking to buy shares of SpaceX.
SpaceX keeps its full ownership structure secret. It was previously reported that some Chinese investors had bought indirect stakes in SpaceX, investing in middleman funds that in turn owned shares in the rocket company. The new testimony describes direct investments that suggest a closer relationship with SpaceX.
[...]
National security law experts said federal officials would likely be deeply interested in understanding the direct Chinese investment in SpaceX. Whether there was cause for concern would depend on the details, they said, but the U.S. government has asserted that China has a systematic strategy of using investments in sensitive industries to conduct espionage.
[...]
Buying shares in SpaceX is much more difficult than buying a piece of a publicly traded company like Tesla or Microsoft. SpaceX has control over who can buy stakes in it, and the company’s investors fall into different categories. The most rarefied group is the direct investors, who actually own SpaceX shares. This group includes funds led by Kahlon, Peter Thiel and a handful of other venture capitalists with personal ties to Musk. Then there are the indirect investors, who effectively buy stakes in SpaceX through a middleman like Kahlon. (The indirect investors are actually buying into a fund run by the middleman, typically paying a hefty fee.) All previously known Chinese investors in SpaceX fell into the latter category.
[...]
Kahlon has turned his access to SpaceX stock into a lucrative business. His investor list reads like an atlas of the world. The investors’ names are redacted in the recently unsealed document, but their addresses span from Chile to Malaysia. One is in Russia. At least two are in mainland China. One is in Qatar. (In one email to SpaceX’s chief financial officer, Kahlon said a Los Angeles-based fund had money from the Qatari royal family and was already invested in SpaceX.)
“You made a big fortune,” a China-based financier wrote to Kahlon four years ago. “Lol something like that. SpaceX has been the gift that keeps on giving,” Kahlon responded. “All thanks to you.”

Sounds like someone purchased, or otherwise gained access to, T-Mobile's targeted customer advertising and marketing profile data.
Or, the kind of information that data harvesting applications gather, and then sell to data brokers.
I wonder if they have a grudge against T-Mobile, this is an early stage of a larger plan, or if it's just for the lulz?
🙄it’s not from T-Mobile, it’s a forgery. And, unless the letters are actually cake, we can infer that “fake” in this case means just that.
Please spare us the reddit pedantry. There are much more intelligent discussions to be had around this topic without avoiding it entirely to inject some grammar nitpicking.
Maybe pedantry is not your cup of tea, but I listen to technology connections.
And the best type of correct is technically correct.
The whole reason to be precise about language is because it is confusing when you read something and go "that does not make sense" and then think about it for a minute and then realize what it means.
We don't call them "fake emails" for a reason. It's confusing. Spam email, spurious email, fake sender address, phishing, etc., are less confusing. Same with physical mail. Don't be mad just because I want to read stuff nice.
It's not imprecise at all and it's only confusing if you deliberately misinterpret it to be pedantic.
What do you call a fake ID then?
Are you telling me that my confusion was on purpose?
I'm telling you I was confused.
Don't believe me if you're so smart. Not going to argue.
Either it was on purpose or you're not nearly smart enough to be arguing about grammar and definitions on the internet.
Also you didn't answer my question.
Fake ID claims to be valid proof of id but is not.
From the headline I couldn't tell if the letter was purporting to be from tmobile or just somebody razzing people. I did not read the article. My brain fried on what a "fake letter" was.
People are not just smart on one dimension only. You can be smart and still get confused processing language. Asshole.

Cassini Proves Complex Chemistry in Enceladus Ocean
In 2005, Cassini found the first evidence that Enceladus has a hidden ocean beneath its icy surface. Jets of water burst from cracks close to the moon’s south pole, shooting ice grains into space. Smaller than grains of sand, some of the tiny pieces of ice fall back onto the moon’s surface, whilst others escape and form a ring around Saturn that traces Enceladus’s orbit.

exposing a fan to linux without a fan header
I'm making a small cluster where I want one SBC in charge of the fan. the fan will pull across 2 chambers to cool everything. I want to be able to use standard linux tools to read and control fan speed but the orange pi I'm planning to put in charge of this function doesn't have a typical PC fan header. I have USB ports and GPIO pins I can break out into a microcontroller or some other adaptor or board but I wanted this to be visible to linux with standard tools.
I saw there are various pi PWM boards out there, but they all seem to cover the top of the boards and blow directly down with their own fan. I'm building a case with a single large fan and ducting that pulls air past passive heatsinks so that wont work.
I could just hardwire the fan and let it run full speed all the time, but thats louder and pulling in more dust than it needs to and wont warn me if the fan dies. Surely someone has already solved this problem but I haven't been able to figure out how.
like this
I've recently done almost exactly this, although I used an ESP8266 running esphome. That powers two 120mm fans that have various speed settings (including 0 rpm via PWM) depending on both the power state of various devices in the cupboard where it's housed, as well as temperature. All speeds and controls are exposed to linux via the Home Assitant API, and of course that has its own alerts and dashboards. I wanted to run this fully independently of the machines its cooling.
Not worth pursuing if you don't already have an HA install, but if you do then perhaps worth a thought of a different approach.

Switching the gf to Linux
Tonight I am installing Kubuntu on the gfs machine. Once she is comfortable with that, and the support ends for our version prolly going with Debian. Going to remove her windows drive (256 or 512GB) as there is only 1 m.2 port on the board, and replace it with a 1tb.
Her needs are simple, make Logitec G13 work (works and tested on my machine for months), Make ESO and addons work (Lutris has its own installer for ESO YAY! Minion has a linux version.), and minecraft java (found in app manager).
Now, she has some knock off razor mouse with buttons under the thumb, maybe the razorx software or whatever it's called will work on her mouse?, this may be a slight pain point. I am hoping this will work out and she will be happy with her (new) pc, we are preserving her windows as a fall back if she hates it. I have a short video lined up to teach her the linux file system. She won't be doing anything command line, for now, except to start the G13. Gonna leave her with the dolphin file manager as it is difficult to get elevated privileges compared to nautalis(sp?) where it is a simple checkbox click. Anything else to suggest here?
I can mostly teach her what she needs to know as we go, she is a smart cookie and has picked up everything I taught her for windows and networking so far so should not be an issue for her, but if you guys have any suggestions on tutorial vids for non power users or other things I can do to make this even more seamless it would be appreciated.
Edit: Thank you all for your input, very much appreciated. I will keep monitoring for new posts

My gf recently built a PC for herself and just did moved her from Windows to Kubuntu stable as well. I was kinda surprised, she was the one who came to me and told me that she doesn't want Windows 11 so she's open to try out Linux. I changed to Linux (Debian) myself for a year and a half and she probably noticed that I still play my games and use it the very same way I did with Windows. I told her that most of the apps has alternatives, running games isn't a big a deal anymore and if she really really need to run Windows software, there's a great chance she can. (But this didn't occured).
My only concern was full Huion Kamvas support and crativity apps, 2D drawing and all that... but she's open to use and learn Krita, it seems she likes it. But if that won't work out, my small research told me that ClipStudio Paint (the one she used on Windows) works well with Wine. The Huion tablet just worked out of the box, with pressure sensitivity and all that jazz. (Buttons don't work though, but Huion has official Linux drivers which supposed to make them work, so that's awesome.)

Stephen Miller Implies He Intended for Trump's Nutjobs to Kill Democrats
There was a clear progression here: Miller started by claiming it was fascist to moderate the speech of explicit Neo-Nazis and other white supremacists, but eventually he came to use it about Democrats generally, particularly the Black prosecutors who deigned to prosecute Trump for crimes others also get prosecuted for.
If Miller believes the word fascist inevitably leads to violent targeting, then he needs to be prosecuted himself for the violent threats that Trump’s prosecutors faced, or that immediately plagued Nina Jankowicz.
And while Miller generally stopped using the word fascist after Harris referenced John Kelly’s use of it to apply to Trump (as part of an effort to blame Democrats because a registered Republican who also considered targeting Biden shot at Trump), to this day — even in this speech — Miller uses dehumanizing language every chance he gets. He simply uses “Marxist” or “communist” or “radical” instead.

U.S. to Share Intelligence With Ukraine for Strikes on Russian Energy Sites as Washington Asks NATO Allies to Provide Kyiv with Similar Support
cross-posted from: lemmy.sdf.org/post/43352808
ArchivedU.S. President Donald Trump has authorized American intelligence agencies to provide Ukraine with targeting data for strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, including oil refineries, pipelines and power plants, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing anonymous American officials.
The order, which directs the Pentagon and intelligence services to supply the information, came shortly before Trump said that he believed Ukraine could win the war and reclaim all of its territory from Russia, the report said.
Trump has voiced increasing frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin as his efforts to mediate an end to the war have flatlined, and the intelligence-sharing is the latest signal that he is now deepening his support for Kyiv.
Washington has also asked NATO allies to provide Kyiv with similar support, according to the sources.

This is a crazy story, flying completely under the radar. So is the US just going to invade Haiti under the pretext of fighting gangs?
Are there communists in Haiti or something? I can't imagine the US would give a dry shit otherwise. The whole story there has been so muddled it's impossible to tell up from down.
The current Haitian government is a provisory council appointed by the OAS, armed with Washington-paid Kenyan police, and some of the "gangs" are demanding new elections since the president was assassinated in 2019, and also calling for a more sovereign Haiti.
It's a mess, but also seems inline the renewal in focus on the Caribbean. Control the Sea around Venezuela, isolate Colombia and Mexico's East while retaking the Panama Canal and Ecuador.

“Papers with Code” went offline, the knowledge doesn’t have to
Launched in 2018, Papers with Code was a community-driven platform for exploring and discovering state-of-the-art research in artificial intelligence and machine learning. Within one year, it became a crucial infrastructure for the computer science community, growing into a resource with more than 18,000 papers and over 1,500 leaderboards (1). The platform aggregated studies from multiple sources and served as a central hub for benchmarked research in the form of leaderboards (see an example of a leaderboard here). It also supported the open science movement by publishing academic papers with their source code.
In response to this rapid growth, Papers with Code announced it was joining Facebook AI in 2019. Users were reassured that “Papers with Code [would] remain a neutral, open and free resource” and there would be no changes to their services. Yet, earlier this year, the Papers with Code website suddenly went offline. Without prior notice, users were simply redirected to the Papers with Code Github repository, and the machine learning community was left to wonder about the fate of this key resource.
About one month after the platform disappeared, Hugging Face, a private company providing collaborative platforms for machine learning models, released a LinkedIn announcement that it was building a successor platform in partnership with Papers with Code and Meta (formerly Facebook). While the Hugging Face website allows the research community to follow trending papers linked to their source code, it has only recently integrated leaderboard functionality. Unlike Papers with Code, which curated paper-centric leaderboards for a wide range of tasks, Hugging Face leaderboards focus on model-centric, reproducible evaluation pipelines such as the Open LLM Leaderboard, enabling users to compare deployed models under standardized conditions. One reason Papers with Code scaled so well is that it allowed researchers to submit performance results from any model (as reported in their papers), regardless of where the model was hosted. In contrast, Hugging Face’s current leaderboard setup requires the model to be publicly hosted on the Hugging Face Hub, loadable via supported APIs. This excludes many works that report results but do not deploy models in that way, limiting visibility into progress across all research.
The role of public institutions in safeguarding research data
The Open Research Knowledge Graph (ORKG) is an open-source and open-data project at the TIB-Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology that also enables benchmarked tracking of state-of-the-art research through comparisons (see Fig. 1). As a national library and foundation of public law under the German state of Lower Saxony, the TIB’s mission is to ensure sustainable access to information and digital data of high public value.Figure 1: An ORKG comparison of crowdsourcing and annotation strategies for question answering tasks in natural language processing and vision, accessible on the ORKG platform.
In 2021, the ORKG imported data from Papers with Code, capturing benchmarks that would have been lost if the Papers with Code website had gone offline (see Fig. 2). This highlights the importance of redundancy across digital infrastructures. If benchmarks are available only on commercial platforms, they remain vulnerable to corporate decisions, shifting business models, or sudden shutdowns. Public infrastructures, such as the ORKG, ensure that this knowledge remains accessible over the long term. This is a crucial example of the role public institutions play in providing continuity, safeguarding scientific knowledge, and ensuring that resources developed by and for the community do not simply disappear.Figure 2: An ORKG leaderboard for question answering models, accessible on the ORKG platform.
A call to the community
Continuity also requires participation. The strength of public infrastructure, such as the ORKG, depends on the level of community engagement. Keeping leaderboards populated with the latest benchmarks requires researchers to contribute their results. Here is our call to action: if you were disappointed to see Papers with Code discontinued, consider contributing your papers to the ORKG. Your contributions ensure the leaderboards tracking progress in your field remain open and accessible to everyone.
About the ORKG
The Open Research Knowledge Graph (ORKG) is a service that aims to revolutionise the way scientific knowledge is shared and used. By creating a structured, searchable knowledge graph, the ORKG makes scientific information more accessible and usable for the global research community.

Sanctioned Chinese company builds revolutionary natural gas turbine. Who will buy it? Everyone.
Bullets:
Aero Engine Corporation of China designed a revolutionary, giant natural gas turbine. At 110 megawatts, it is the largest turbine so far built in China.
Thanks for reading Inside China / Business! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work.
Only a handful of companies across the world build natural gas turbines, and order backlogs are hitting records amid soaring demand for new electricity.
Electrical utilities and power producers currently have a five-year wait on new orders, and place large non-refundable deposits with manufacturers just to get in line to buy.
Aero Engine Corp has been under sanction for over five years, so North American and most European buyers cannot place orders for these turbines. But demand across the world is skyrocketing, and Aero Engine will easily find markets.
This is a transcript, for the YouTube video here:
Report:
Good morning. I live in China full time, and my electric bill is about $7 a month. I live in Kunming, where the weather is comfortable, pretty much all the time. Previously I was in Qingdao, which gets cold, and in Shanghai which gets hot and cold, and there I was paying about $14 or so. No matter where you are, then, power bills aren’t much of a thought. That fact is a significant driver of Chinese industrial productivity, by the way, as factories in China just cost much less to power and run, compared to factories in Europe especially:
All that in mind, when Chinese firms announce breakthroughs in the power sector, it’s not just for the domestic markets they have in mind. The Aero Engine Corporation of China is actually a manufacturer of aircraft engines, and the company recently introduced a revolutionary giant gas turbine. It is the most powerful China-built turbine, and media here point out that this is a 100% made-in-China project, and that only a small group of countries are capable of producing large gas turbines. The Taihang-110 program has generated over a hundred patents so far, in design, materials, manufacturing, testing, and rollout. This is a primer on how gas turbines work, and they do have strong applications in the aviation sector.
The demand for natural gas turbines is at record highs, and so are the order backlogs for companies that build them. And it’s from that perspective that we should view developments like these. AeroEngine Corporation will be able to sell these new giant turbines as fast as they can build them. Their primary market may in fact be here in Mainland China, and I’ll let you know if my electric bill goes from $7 to $6.50. But its market is much more likely to be everywhere else, and to utilities and power producers who are waiting in a long line to buy turbines from other manufacturers.
The natural gas boom and demands for electricity to power AI data centers mean that turbine manufacturers can’t produce nearly fast enough to keep up. Siemens is one of only companies that build them, and they’re ramping up output but still are way behind. In the next five years, 46 gigawatts of natural gas power will come online, which is a big jump over the previous five-year period. And turbine manufacturers haven’t yet met the demand from prior years anyway: As of today, there’s a five-year wait for new orders coming in.
The three biggest suppliers to the industry are GE Vernova, Siemens again, and Mitsubishi. Backlogs are at record levels for all of them. At GE, their backlog is $20 billion today, up from just $6 billion two years ago. A quarter of that backlog is in North America, and Asia makes up a big chunk of the rest. Siemens’ backlog is 131 billion euro. At Mitsubishi, they had planned to add capacity to increase production by 30%, but that wasn’t nearly enough, so they hope to double it over the next two years.
Buyers are making non-refundable deposits, called Reservation Fees, just for the privilege of placing an order and waiting in that line that lasts five years. Those fees are outside of the Production Slot Agreements, which is the formal production and delivery contract.
Naturally utilities and power producers are looking for suppliers anywhere they can. And that’s probably what Aero Engine Corp has figured out. Assuming they can have these turbines rolling out of their factories some day before 1 January of 2030 and assuming they can do so at a price that’s competitive with what Siemens and GE are asking for, the buyers are already out there. And remember that the demand for these turbines is global.
Aero Engine Corp was placed on the OFAC sanctions list during the first Trump Administration, so utilities in North America aren’t allowed to buy these new turbines, but lots of other places can. Countries in the Middle East have natural gas coming out of the ground every time they punch a hole, and electricity demand there is soaring, and so we should expect that to be a huge market for these new turbines. And there’s almost no point in asking anymore how any of that new business will be done—it won’t be in US dollars.
To emphasize again how we need to read news stories like these here, in this case for low-cost power generation. It won’t move the needle very much for Chinese households or industrial users, because we’re already paying the lowest prices in the world. Instead it’s great news for the Chinese company that figured out how to build the things, great news for power producers outside United States, and bad news for GE and Siemens and Mitsubishi.

How to keep avoiding Google when it hamstrings Freetube [Linux]
If you have any sense of privacy, you know better than to use Google's official Youtube clients - not to mention, they're really kind of terrible.
To view Youtube video comfortably and limit Google's privacy invasions, the main third-party clients are:
- NewPipe and derivatives (Android)
- Grayjay (Android)
- Freetube (Desktop)
- Grayjay desktop - x64 only (Desktop)
Unfortunately, if you've been using those third-party clients for a long time, you know Google plays a game of cat and mouse with them, to discourage users from using them:
- Google breaks something or other (usually the player API) or Google blocks your IP because it detects a non-Google player.
- The developers of those clients play catch-up, make their clients work again for a while.
- Google breaks them again. Rinse. Repeat.
And Google now having free rein to be as abusive as they want under the Trump regime, it's not getting any better ☹️
The developers who react most quickly to Google's shenanigans are the FUTO developers behind Grayjay: when Google breaks it, usually they have a fix within hours, if not less. And there's a reason for that: they're paid to do it. Incidentally, I encourage you to purchase a FUTO license: it's money well spent to encourage FUTO. They've really earned it.
The Newpipe developers are also fairly quick to fix their client. Not always, but they do a pretty decent job.
Freetube however can take many days to get fixed. For instance, the native Freetube player is currently broken and it's been broken for a week.
When Google plays with everybody's balls, if you're on mobile, at least Grayjay will almost always get the job done, so you don't have to compromise your privacy and hit the official client.
On the desktop however, ~~unless you have an ARM64 machine and you use Grayjay as a desktop app in Waydroid - which is a totally valid solution that works great, in case you didn't know~~ [EDIT: this is incorrect: there is in fact an x64 Grayjay desktop client - Thanks @portnull@lemmy.dbzer0.com], Freetube will sadly let you down regularly for a long time.
The official workaround recommended by the Freetube developers when Google breaks their player is to use an external player. But there are two problems with that:
- If you don't use the right external players - which Google likely broke too - or the player isn't configured to use the latest and greatest Google evasion code, it's not going to work.
- When spawning Freetube with a URL (typically by LibRedirect from your browser), Freetube ignores the external player and tries to play the video with its broken internal player anyway. You can always manually tell it to use the external player after it's failed trying to play the video itself, but it's an extra step, and you end up running both Freetube and the external player just to view a Youtube video from a website.
So I figured I'd post a little guide on how to setup an external video player that works with Freetube (and gets fixed quickly when Google breaks it) and how to spawn it directly from your browser to view a video and bypass LibRedirect / Freetube entirely.
This little guide is mostly for Linux. If you're not running Linux, the principle should be the same, but the details of how to make this work are different of course.
So the player you need is SMPlayer. SMPlayer is a great mpv player frontend in its own right. Don't worry, both mpv and SMPlayer are usually available in most distros, so you can install it normally with your favorite package manager.
But the thing that makes SMPlayer great is, to play Youtube video, it can use yt-dlp as a backend to fetch the video from Youtube:
And it turns out, the developers of yt-dlp are usually very quick to unfuck Google's fuckeries and make it work again. Almost as quick as FUTO's developers: when Google breaks things, yt-dlp is usually one of the first Youtube clients to start working again.
The problem is, the version of yt-dlp that comes in most distributions is usually hopelessly behind, so it won't work with your distro's official package.
To use the latest and greatest yt-dlp with SMPlayer, you need to use the version in the Github repo. To do this:
- Clone the repo (for example in your home directory):
git clone --recurse-submodules https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp.git - Make yt-dlp available in your PATH:
ln -s ~/yt-dlp/yt-dlp.sh ~/.local/bin/yt-dlp
Then if you invoke yt-dlp from any directory, it should start it correctly:
$ yt-dlp
Usage: yt-dlp [OPTIONS] URL [URL...]
yt-dlp: error: You must provide at least one URL.
Type yt-dlp --help to see a list of all options. Then you can try if SMPlayer now plays a Youtube video correctly:
smplayer https://youtu.be/jNQXAC9IVRwFinally, configure Freetube to use SMPlayer as an external player:
Now try to play a video from Freetube: it should open SMPlayer and SMPlayer should play the video correctly.
When Google breaks yt-dlp again, simply go into the repo and do a git pull --recurse-submodules. Do this regularly until the yt-dlp folks work their magic and fix it, which should happen a lot quicker than fixing the internal Freetube player.
Finally, how to spawn SMPlayer directly from the browser:
- Install the RunWith browser extension: this little thing is a simple tool to spawn an external program from the browser and it's really underrated. Not terribly user-friendly to install but it does the job fine.
- In the RunWith extension preferences, configure RunWith like so:
Then if you right-click on a Youtube video link, you'll get an option in the context menu to open it with SMPlayer through RunWith:
I hope this helps 🙂

I mean that's not even considering that having over 40% of machines not switched over by EoL is pretty massive. Very reminiscent of XP.
It's certainly possible they will re-evaluate a lot of their stances that lead to this point.

Or more specifically gs.statcounter.com/windows-ver…
All the data is nice and smooth, slow rises or declines, as usual.
And then all of a sudden in July and only ins Singapore, Windows 7 goes from <2% to 92%. All other asian countries stay about the same.
Does this sound likely to you that 90% of users uninstall Win10 and Win11 in Singapore to install Win7 and all that in a span of just two months?
Or is it more likely that there's some bug (or some botnet) causing false stats?

I personally think that (as unpopular an opinion as it may be) Flatpak's largely make the choice of first distro irrelevant. The weakness in Manjaro is that you either risk using the AUR or stay on old versions of the software. Or with Mint/Ubuntu/etc... you either risk adding random repos to your sources list or you use older versions of the software.
Either way, you run the risk of a new person mucking up their system with a bad repo or a bad aur package.
The alternative, using flatpaks, largely solves both issues for when you need newer versions of a certain software, and are dead simple to install/remove/update, etc...
And I say this as someone who was super skeptical of flatpak's for a very very long time.

(Mainly graphical apps for updates, backups, disk management, etc...)
I first tried Ubuntu when I was starting my Linux journey, but it didn't really click until I used Mint. Save yourself some pain and go for Mint first 😀
Edit: Also, Ubuntu contains ads for things like their "Ubuntu Pro" update service, and they're known to commit some tomfuckery when it comes to installing apps and compatibility (see Snap Controversy)

in reply to Truscape • • •Just today at work other team wrote a bunch of ready-made images on their SBCs. In about 10% of them snap shat the bed by corrupting one json file which rendered their environment unusable. They did it in a pretty stupid way by writing an sd card, inserting it into SBC, booting up and disconnecting power after very short visual confirmation that system gave some signs of life. And snap was doing whatever it's doing in the background. So I had the pleasure of removing said json-file and reinstalling all their crap manually on those failed units.
So, maybe not strictly speaking fault of snapd, but yet another problem it caused for me without any practical reason other than the environment they chose just uses snap instead of something more robust.

in reply to IsoKiero • • •Raspberry pi's didn't even have power buttons until this latest version. I fully expect to be able to unplug an SBC at any point with very low chances of corruption. It's not like they're designed for that, but they don't really give you much choice. Having 10% fail like that is ridiculous.
In fact, I've done it hundreds of times and never had an issue.

Mint took Ubuntu and shaped it further to be even simpler.
I think Ubuntu tried to replicate UI of MacOS while Mint tried to look more like Windows.
I personally did not use Mint, but from the comments you can see that it has a significant following.
I used Ubuntu for some time, but stopped over decade ago as I got very frustrated that they frequently introduced instability (note that since Mint is based on Ubuntu it is not completely immune to that), though I hope that things improved and now Ubuntu is more stable.

Depending on if there is a specific game you know doesn't work that is a deal breaker for you, it might be fine at this point to switch. Just throwing that out there. You may not need more compatibility than what is available.

There is a website you can check compatibility on although I don't know if it includes non-games and/or tools. Arizona Sunshine looks like it's fine: protondb.com/search?q=arizona+…
If it's gold or higher it'll almost certainly play without issue. Silver will very likely play if you tweak the compatibility settings to change proton versions (go to game options in steam > compatibility > change the version. Bronze is hit or miss, you'll likely be able to get it to work but it might require more work. Borked is of course...borked.
Anyways, someone else can probably answer those games specifically but if not you can use the website to check.

The shitbox machines microsoft pushed out that could only use their app store. That is the end goal for them. They just can't sell it.
My current problem is keeping copilot and recall off of our public computers. People are using them and want them clear of spyware and intrusive monitoring. You can not really get rid of any of the microsoft software since they now cache it on the computer. Anytime someone new logs in it puts 365 and copilot on their profile. If you delete it from the cache its back the next update cycle. They have begun putting notepad and basic programs in the cache. So you can't just kill it by making the cache path inaccessible. They are gearing up to close off all holes and force their app store onto everyone. They are working toward a walled garden where everyone has a microsoft account.
So maybe you don't know what a walled garden is? You don't understand that they have everything in place to lock out any third party software. They have recall, a huge security risk to train up their AI's. You can't believe anything they say about it. I know this because I've been around since the dos floppies had the IBM logo on them.
They have a unmanageable cache of software downloading without consent that uses their app store and if you kill it with a gpo you start having problems with basic functions. They killed wsus because it could be used to lock out their garbage. Despite operating in a domain environment I still see messages on accounts urging people to link a microsoft account.
So please tell me about what I know or don't know.
FreedomAdvocate
in reply to MehBlah • • •You don’t know that a walled garden requires them to lock you in to only install from their store, while windows lets you install anything you want however you want. While S mode exists, it’s never going to be the only mode because people need legacy win32 programs and all sorts of custom programs. Microsoft know that removing that ability will destroy Windows, which is why they haven’t.
Copilot has options to not collect data etc. copilot and recall are completely optional - you don’t have to use them. They’re not “spyware”.
I’ve been around since floppy disks too. You should know better than what you just wrote if you have been around this long.
Crozekiel
in reply to FreedomAdvocate • • •FreedomAdvocate
in reply to Crozekiel • • •You don’t understand freedom then. You’re free to not use windows, and Microsoft are free to make their product how they see fit.
I use windows every single day. I use copilot for work almost every day in multiple different flavours (windows client, vs code, GitHub, and even made a mcp server using copilot agent to use in teams for departments at work to use to get info from various databases), and I know the privacy aspects of it. In windows in copilots settings you can do what I said - turn off learning from your usage, and turn off personalised content using your other data. You can even disable the copilot app from starting on boot the same way you do every other program, through task manager.
Sane with recall - it’s entirely “on device”, encrypted, secure, optional, and isn’t even available on 99.9% of devices as they don’t have an NPU.
There is no need to try and disable/remove them - just don’t use them if you don’t want to. Why do you think you need to disable/remove them?
