Trump is hell bent on accelerating China's way to the top. Except in many aspects they are no longer on the way, they are already there, so what Trump is doing, is also helping China increase their lead. Many think China is still just a low level production hub for the world. But the reality is that China is already outsourcing production to neighboring countries, and China is now among the world leaders in 8 out of 10 key industries for the future, unmatched by any other country or EU.
They just have so many people. They could replace entire major foreign industries and still have people left over.

China has absolutely been killing it on developing infrastructure and education for half a century. But despite that, authoritarian states, like dictatorships and the 1 party system of China belong to, usually never has that or really can leverage it even if they have decent policies. Because it usually turns out to be a matter of working for the oligarchs, and working for the oligarchs is generally little different than working for the Mafia, and that stifles development. But somehow they've made it work in China.

In some regards they are doing more for the environment than USA. I'm not sure what you mean by not caring about the economy, because they absolutely do. Kill Chain analysis has been a huge focus area for the last few years, so the US military has developed ways to counter threats.
Golden Dome is still a wildly expensive, fanciful, and technically infeasible program. Even if we know exactly how to detect and counter these threats, the US is a gigantic fucking country with TONS of border to enclose. It's one thing to have a way to detect, track, target, and shoot down one of those three things. It's another to do that for 40 at the same time in wildly different areas of the world (made up number since I have no idea how many weapons Russia is able to unleash). It's a lot easier to protect an area the size of New Jersey than it is to protect the entire US.

The problem with this is two fold; no known system in the world can reliably intercept ICBMs, and doing so from space is ludicrously expensive. It costs, in effect, about ten times as much to shoot down one ICBM as it does to build an launch one, meaning that a peer adversary can just build more missiles and flood the system. To stop even a Hundred ICBMs would cost hundreds of billions of dollars. China has six hundred.
Basically, like so much of what Trump spends money on, it will amount to a very expensive but completely useless toy.

I've been thinking about adding Q&A features to PieFed for a while... Initially just the ability to set a comment as the solution to a post and then give that comment more emphasis in the UI. What else do we need? Maybe display the number of solution comments on peoples profile.
Honestly, I wouldn’t recommend adding the feature to mark comments as solutions. Websites like StackOverflow often have many answers that aren’t the best marked as solutions, and I believe platforms like Codidact have learned from those mistakes.
Reputation is a key factor that motivates people to contribute answers. However, StackOverflow suffers from over-moderation due to the reputation gained from moderating. I’m curious about how Codidact has addressed this issue.
Instead, consider allowing users to mark questions as solved rather than comments. Implementing a voting system similar to Slashdot, where users can categorize responses as helpful, funny, or other descriptors, might be more effective. This way, contributors are incentivized to help, as they can gain reputation points. Then a leaderboard showcasing the most helpful contributors on a weekly or monthly basis could further encourage participation.

Actually if I recall, America is having a shortage of Canadian visitors and I, for one, have noticed very little change in my lifestyle due to tariffs.
The tariffs are absolutely fucking up our country right now, and I live in the US, and we absolutely deserve it. It's affecting every single one of my projects (I work in an engineering/manufacturing company). Turns out 10-25% tariffs really cuts out a lot of the margin for people so we've had to significantly bump prices on aerospace components. This in turn will drive ticket prices up eventually as well. It's also affecting our groceries. And then the side effects of all of it, is the boycotts from numerous countries. It's absolutely crushing our trade.

You would think this would spur bullpup adoption / creation around those exact specs... and I guess the PSA Wolverine, Kel Tech RDB and Springfield Hellion are that, though ... the general gun community seems quite hesitant toward and skeptical of anything that doesn't match their already learned standard AR 15 muscle memory.
Generally, puppies have less recoil simply as function of being a bit heavier, literally having more mass, but this can vary a lot depending on what you are comparing to, and the exact bullpup's internal mechanics.
This is assuming we are comparing a bullpuppy and standard layout weapon shooting the same caliber, of course, from similar barrel lengths.
However, another large factor maybe isn't quite recoil per se, but the overall balance point, center of mass of the weapon.
A lot of guntubers I have seen give bullpups a decent chance say that they are so well balanced, that you can reasonably accurately operate them single handedly, which is fairly important in a combat scenario where maybe you get shot in an arm or shoulder.
They also say that it is easier to get the weapon aimed at a target, and that follow up shots are also easier to aim precisely and get off more rapidly, because of the balance of the weapon, and that it is less fatiguing to hold a bullpuppy in a shouldered, ready to aim and fire position, and you can do this longer without your arms tiring.
As a video game modifier and fps enjoyer, I find it funny that that last part is almost never modelled or simulated by games. Sure, sniper oriented games will have a hold breath mechanic, but almost no games simulate that... just holding a weapon upright, shouldered, sighted in... this is tiring.
Like, grab a 7 pound semi gun shaped object and hold it as if you are just 'iron sighted in', in a game... I'll bet your arms start getting weak and wobbly in a number of minutes, now try that with double or triple the weight to approimate an older /heavier rifle or MG of some kind, and you'll see how silly the notion of just running around with like an M60, and using it as an assault rifle is, unless you are a fucking beefcake.
There are also studies that show that is is significantly easier to train an untrained shooter to be a decently accurate marksman with a bullpup than it is to do the same with a standard layout weapon.
But flip side of that are things like uh, field repairs can be more difficult and time consuming to repair, and widely reported heavier and/or chunkier, less smooth trigger pulls.

Genuienly, maybe I've missed a tac shooter or milsim and could get a new recommendation to check out, but I am mostly dogging on ... the kinds of shooter games that have very realistic graphics stylings, but have rather arcady, unrealistic actual game mechanics.
I am not saying no games do this, but I am saying that such games tend to be less popular, more niche, their own subgenre.
I have played waaaaay too much Arma 3, and from what I remember, to actually get shouldering a weapon to be its own distinct fatigue / wobbly arm mechanic, as if it was its own sort of mini stamina meter... you have to use ACE or some set of massive realism overhaul style mods.
Like, iirc, vanilla Arma 3 will make your aim shitty after you just sprinted a kilometer, but ... the act of shouldering your weapon alone does not cause its own kind of fatigue.
I have played a bit of EFT, but given that it is full of try hards and hackers, and is also basically constantly broken in some way, I haven't played much in a while, but I do not remember if it did or did not have this mechanic... but I am leaning toward no, at least a few years back, it also did not have a fatigue mechsnic specific to shouldering/aiming a weapon.

The only other one I can think of is America's Army, maybe 3.0 or later. I know the 2.x versions didn't do aim fatigue. But I think they shut that game down years ago.
Personally I've only handled a bullpup. It was created as a replacement for the old M16 the army used to use. Didn't have much training with it, after a session of virtual training, we were sent to the live firing range to shoot. Managed to get a couple of shots under marksmen. As a video game enjoyer getting to shoot, and throwing live nades, was probably the only fun part about basic training.
So yes I think it's a pretty good weapon for even novices to shoot accurately. Idk about fatigue tho since we were made to carry that thing around all the time and just got used to the weight as my own.
I more mean fatigue specifically in your arms, that makes it more difficult to aim accurately the longer you have the weapon shouldered, different from the kind of general fatigue based basically on the weight of your overall kit / loadout.

The US does have more restrictions on handguns than long guns in the same way. Youll notice in NZ you cant have a gun in general without a license, which obviously doesnt exist in the US. That said, federal law restricts ownership of handguns more than on long guns. 18 year olds can buy long guns and ammo for them, but cannot buy handguns nor handgun ammo. One has to be 21 or older to buy a handgun. Although legally an 18 year old can own a handgun if they are given it as a gift. But they still cant buy ammo for it themselves

This is common in Italy. A minor part of the workforce is part of a union (our unions are different from what an American might be used to, btw), mainly because membership has a cost (usually ~1% of your wages), and because many are afraid of what employers may think when they find out.

The problem for OTA affiliates/broadcasters is content. Their business model relies on getting eyeballs so they can justify what they charge for advertising. Creating content that your viewers actually want to watch is expensive.
Aside from some of the larger PBS stations, I don't know that any of the major broadcasters, like Sinclair, have any experience producing their own content. They can throw their little tantrum and refuse to air Kimmel, but that's just going to hurt them in the short term as advertisers will decide OTA timeslots are not a good investment.

Firewire is getting a new lease on life and will have extended support up to 2029 on Linux operating systems. Phoronix reports that a Linux maintainer Takashi Sakamoto has volunteered to oversee the Firewire subsystem for Linux during this time, and will work on Firewire's core functions and sound drivers for the remaining few that still use the connectivity standard.
Further, Takashi Sakamoto says that his work will help users transition from Firewire to more modern technology standards (like perhaps USB 2.0). Apparently, Firewire still has a dedicated fanbase that is big enough to warrant six more years of support. But we suspect this will be the final stretch for Firewire support, surrounding Linux operating systems. Once 2029 comes around, there's a good chance Firewire will finally be dropped from the Linux kernel altogether.

Yeah, that's a thought...though honestly, unless whatever someone is doing requires real-time processing and adding latency is a problem, they can probably pass it through some other old device that can speak both Firewire and something else.

No I'm talking about the PCI card, just commenting on the longevity of some devices. I know two people still using FireWire for their interfaces in spare kit (RME fire faces), which got me thinking of some of my old kit I've replaced like the delta1010.
Yup, that's what I'm doing.. an rme fireface. Incredible device, but uses fw. And since Microsoft is a bunch of aholes, I have to figure out how best to go forwards post windows 10. Except since I'm poor it's my main interface that I've upgraded to.
Linux is a good way forward if you want to try it and keep the fireface. Ubuntu is not my favorite base, but Ubuntu Studio (I'd suggest the LTS if you don't need the latest and greatest all the time) is nicely set up, but I'd make one change from their preinstalled and I'd use Reaper over Ardour, but thats me.
Your biggest headache will be plugins if you've got a ton of vst's, not all will work on linux.

I feel this, I've tried to get cis people to go to protests and mobilize for trans rights for years, and crickets, but they manage monthly marches and even a general strike (in my country) for Palestine since Oct '23. People usually have the capacity to organize, they just don't think most issues are worth it.

This is flawed thinking. There is no "them" with a huge salary. The people making decisions are salaried or invested employees, and their livelihood depends on the stock regardless. There isn't "one guy" that this hits, like it would with a salary, there's thousands of investors which must be appeased.
Also, it's likely many of those canceling were people who didn't use the service as much as power users, which means they're losing the cheapest to maintain customers (industry insight, no research to back this up, to be clear).
If we had boycotts and cancelations even a quarter this big across other media giants, our media would be a far better place.

It's not safe to be outside at night in that town. you will absolutely get stabbed, shot and/or robbed. It's never happened to me. But I had to stay hotel there once a few years ago and I heard the drug addicts outside screaming all night.
Does she have chronic pain or a debilitating mental illness and unable to afford medical care or is she simply a poor rural drug addict that enjoys living in squalor?

Say, when some opposition party in Georgia is technically its own thing, but receives grants, the more the better it works, that's not having a hard joint yet having a hierarchy. And, say, the glory of Saakashvili's war on corruption shouldn't be overestimated, he mostly did it through abuse. When in Armenia in the 90s Vano Siradeghyan was the internal affairs minister, its crime and corruption problems were also much less than before and after, because police would simply murder mob bosses (except for those in the government, of course). I don't know anything about Vano being pro-western or receiving grants or aiming for political power, but he used absolutely the same means the wonderful reformer Saakashvili did. OK, these are local examples.
The point is - the modern state of existence of the British Empire (in my humble opinion US has slowly receded to being part of that for many years) doesn't favor hard joints. One should look not only at grant eater groups in various countries, one should also look at many small independent states, like Arab monarchies or Baltic republics, whose foreign affairs positions have little consistency and often seem as if they were saying what the US or Britain don't want to say themselves yet.
So - getting back to weapons, we might be living in an interbellum, not for world wars, but for imperialist and anti-imperialist wars. WWI and WWII can be united into one thing in some sense, in WWI empires crumbled and socialist movements raised their heads. In WWII socialists survived and even reinforced some of their positions, but empires managed to play on both sides, and speaking about Nazis, they were very bad people, but their plans for future weren't compatible with the old concept of empires. So in some sense Nazis and USSR got played to fight each other where they shouldn't have.
So - Star Wars is often blamed for touching politics where, in the opinion of those talking, it's superficial in that. I don't think Star Wars is superficial in that, I think its EU's portrayal of that inhabited galaxy and its politics is pretty similar to our real world, just more directly exposed and has a far smaller difficulty level for the good guys. Both can be considered conventions of art.

The thing about this, is that it doesn't matter if it's happening in Brittain or the U.S. or Israel. It's a form of social control for elites who view the world as a social hierarchy. There are no rules for them, but they need the masses to believe there are.
They're at the top. God or nature chose for them to rule, and at the end of the day, nobody has any rights other than their right to rule over others. It just "is what it is." They love social darwinism as long as they control the game, but they also know the reality is that if the masses were to ever unite and rise up against them, they would very quickly lose their spot at the top of the hierarchy.
Creating a value system on something arbitrary like skin color is one of the easiest ways to divide and conquer. Control of the masses by tricking some of them into believing they share something inherent with those who actually dominate all of them. Skin color, nationality, religion, or political beliefs as a measure of the value of human life, lulls the subordinates into a false sense of safety by default. They can be made fully aware of atrocities happening on the other side of the world, or even next door to them, but believe their belonging to the perceived in-group means it won't happen to them.
When one out-group is eliminated, a new arbitrary out-group will be created to divide and conquer those who remain and destroy any who oppose. It's happening in the U.S. right now.
We allowed immigrants to be rounded up like animals. We rationalized children screaming and crying in fear as their families were torn apart. They weren't here "legally" so they didn't have the same legal rights as everyone else. And since we allowed a group of humans to be considered "illegal," a loss of human dignity is just accepted as the inevitable consequence of their actions. As if they somehow deserved this.
Then when we learned there were people who were here legally, but also being rounded up illegally in the rush to get all the "illegals" off the street, we accepted that it was simply a mistake, but a consequence of so many illegals with similar ethnicities overwhelming the system. A fault of the group, not a fault of the system. Nothing we needed to worry about, things would get sorted out, eventually. The system is never held to account.
Last week an entire apartment building was raided in Chicago when government agents dropped from a helicopter to a rooftop to break in. Most residents woke up to their doors kicked in around 1 am. Adults were handcuffed. Children were zip tied together and taken from their families screaming and crying. And in all the chaos and confusion, their American neighbors were also rounded up, handcuffed for hours, and denied due process. When they were finally released, they returned to find many of their friends and neighbors missing (and still unaccounted for), and many of their homes raided of valuables.
Surely this will be the line for America, right? We can all see this has nothing to do with immigration and "legal" status, right? The system is commiting the crime. They system is breaking all the rules it claims to enforce.
Or, will we all just accept that because it happened to mainly black and brown American citizens in an inner city apartment building, it was simply a mistake due to similar ethnicities overwhelming the system? It's not something you need to worry about if you're not one of them. You're safe. Surely things will get sorted out, eventually.

The White House’s office of management and budget (OMB) is arguing that federal workers who are furloughed amid the ongoing government shutdown are not entitled to back pay.
In a draft memo first obtained by Axios, OMB argued that an amendment to the Government Employee Fair Treatment Act (GEFTA) of 2019 would not guarantee furloughed workers back pay and that said funds must be set aside by Congress.
“The legislation that ends the current lapse in appropriations must include express language appropriating funds for back pay for furloughed employees, or such payments cannot be made,” said Mark Paoletta, OMB’s general counsel, in a draft addressed to White House budget director Russell Vought, the Washington Post reported.
The OMB previously revised a shutdown guidance document on Friday to remove reference to the GEFTA Act, reported Government Executive, a media site reporting on the US executive branch.

While many understood the law to automatically guarantee pay for federal workers, the White House’s OMB is arguing against that interpretation, suggesting that the law only created the conditions for back pay.

The entire reason I use an android phone is that it's just like a little computer where I can decide how it's used. I was wondering if anyone is familiar with other options.
I remember the PSP with its 3g modem that was a fun novelty. Are there any modern devices like the OpenPandora that could be suitable?
Most of my paid apps are through alternative markets so I'm fairly sure with some effort I could get them running on a Linux device.
I thought about using a laptop but it wouldn't have the same convenience to answer calls asap from my pocket. I'm also unsure if it's possible to use tools like Google maps to navigate.

On Monday the outfit inked a deal with AMD which follows earlier tie-ups with Nvidia, Oracle and CoreWeave, as Sam Altman’s outfit scrambles to secure enough silicon to keep ChatGPT online and the hype machine alive.
The latest commitments would give OpenAI access to more than 20 gigawatts of computing capacity over the next decade, roughly the output of 20 nuclear reactors. At about $50 billion per gigawatt, according to OpenAI’s estimates, the total tab hits that $1 trillion figure.
Analysts are not convinced this financial engineering makes any sense. DA Davidson analyst Gil Luria said: “OpenAI is in no position to make any of these commitments,” adding that it could lose about $10 billion this year.
