Manchester synagogue stabbing, car ramming: 4 injured, suspect shot outside synagogue, police say
Thursday's incident came as the community observed Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar
Police said they had shot a man suspected in a stabbing and car-ramming that injured four people at a synagogue Thursday in the northern English city of Manchester on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.
Greater Manchester Police said in a series of posts on X that a major incident was declared after a member of the public reported that they had "witnessed a car being driven toward members of the public" and that one "man had been stabbed" near the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Crumpsall, an area known for its large Jewish community.

Putin Signs Military Draft for 135,000 Citizens Amid Ongoing Mobilization Plans
Russian leader Vladimir Putin has signed a decree for the 2025 autumn military draft, running from October 1 to December 31, according to a decree posted on the official Russian government legal portal on September 29.The call-up will target 135,000 Russian citizens aged 18 to 30.
Vice Admiral Vladimir Tsimlyansky, deputy head of Russia’s Main Organizational and Mobilization Directorate, said draftees will serve only within Russia and will not participate in Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Previously, it was reported Russia is considering a major overhaul of its conscription system that would allow for continuous draft procedures year-round, as the country grapples with unprecedented military losses in Ukraine, according to the proposed legislative changes, introduced by the head of the Russian Parliament’s Defense Committee.

No, no they do not. They are cowards, only acting strong when they hugely outnumber everyone around them. But they don't outnumber us. They only do, if you sit in your house and tell people to do the same thing.
Then start assembling your army and go invade Israel.
No? Right. The flotilla didn't have the ability to muscle past the Israeli military; grassroots endeavours never will. The only way to win is to continue drawing attention to how awful they are until the people with real firepower do something.
If that never happens, then the fascists in charge of Israel win. It sucks, but talking tough on the internet won't change it. The Communists didn't prevent the Nazis rise to power by brawling with them in the street either.
This can have a massive impact on European politics, especially in Italy and especially if the response from the Italian dockworkers totally fucks up the operations of Italian ports for a couple of weeks.

Legality. Israel can't arrest someone in international waters. They can kidnap someone in international waters. But an arrest implies they have any legality to it. They do not. They're the ones committing a crime not her.
It's like saying the bank robber arrested their hostages.
Legality is a fiction created by the powerful. I’m saying the word arrest is a synonym for kidnapping. It’s only existence is to mislead people into accepting the violence of our rules against ordinary people.
This is a perfect example. The kidnapping of Greta is blatantly illegal. Yet the world will pretend otherwise. And not because of the law but because of power.
It's still important to not conflate the two.
While most legal systems are far from ideal, a lot of people appreciate having some semblance of law and order.
An arrest is made when someone is believed to have committed a crime. A kidnapping is the unlawful capturing of an individual.
Enforcers of the legal system (police, ICE, and other 3 letter agencies) carry out both legal arrests and unlawful kidnappings, the latter of which is what's being discussed here.
The fact that "the world will pretend otherwise" is exactly why it is so important to emphasise the difference between the 2 words.
we need to challenge this idea that violence done by the state is automatically legitimate
That is exactly what the top-level comment was doing.
The use of specific vocabulary is important in how media normalizes the actions of "the powerful".
What you're saying is similar to how "died" could be a synonym for "killed". This was used constantly during the genocide. Israelis were "killed" or "slaughtered" on October 7th. Soldiers in tanks were "kidnapped" that day. But every day in Gaza children just "died". Like the news articles were describing some natural disaster event and not a genocide. The people spending decades in Israeli prisons camps with no trial were "prisoners" exchanged for "hostages".
Words matter. Especially when media is forming a narrative. Yes, legality is "fiction" but that doesn't mean the majority of the Western world doesn't believe that fiction. The entire idea of a justice system is "made up" it's power comes from the collective belief in that system and the use of "justified" violence it maintains a monopoly on. You may not believe it. But most people in the west still do.
It is important to call out the inconsistent and unfair use of the vocabulary the media uses to describe Israels actions. If we stop labeling their crimes because "it doesn't matter anymore, clearly no justice exists" but at the same time that language is still used to describe anyone's resistance to Israel then they have won the narrative.
I mean you can think it’s good for people to be abducted under some circumstances. Maybe you are right, maybe not, but at least then you’d have to justify it. “Arrested” already means justified in most people’s minds. It’s a thought-terminating cliche, and as long as we make that distinction, it will be abused as in this case.
Using less savory words like kidnapping or abduction more accurately relays the severity and violence that’s happening. And yes, violence is sometimes necessary, but it’s still unsavory.
Abduction implies someone secretly being taken away and kept at an unknown location, their fate unknown and probably someone trying to ransom them to their family.
Here we have pictures of the IDF taking her, we know exactly where they're taking her and what's going to happen. They're not going to physically harm her, going to give her an inconsequential slap on the wrist, and put her on a plane back home.
It's ok to feel that's wrong, but trying to make it seem more horrible by using words invented for something else just seems petty.
You (I hope) recognize that
the state kidnapping a pedophile and puting them in prison.
vs.
a pedophile kidnapping a child and putting them in their basement
are different beyond just the material action of forcefully taking someone against their will. There is context that matters. So we use different words to describe the different contextual relationships. This example is a clear difference. I really hope we don't have to debate that. It's why I'm using it as an example. So we can remove the moral ambiguity and agree to this distinction.
There are obviously less extreme examples of this. That is the why understanding how language is used is important. In reality we say "the child was kidnapped" and "the pedophile was arrested". It is vocabulary that describes the relationships of morality that we as a society assume to uphold.
By your reasoning they "are both acts of violence and taking someone against their will and imprisoning them". I get that mate. But the world you want to live in where we describe both these actions as "kidnapping" does not exist.
Like, in what reality is your opinion even useful to reality? We don't live in a world where language is used the way you want it to be. You need to understand the world you live in and the way language is used.
Understanding how and why the media uses words like "arrest" vs. "kidnap" to infer a false justification is significantly more helpful than saying "well we should simplify language". Human language isn't a programming language. It can't be. It needs to deal with significantly more ambiguity, emotions, and morals.
Like, how are you even trying to apply this type of reasoning to the world? It's useless for describing reality. Language isn't used the way you want it to. And it never will work that way. What you're trying to argue for isn't useful to describing reality.
Language is always subject to change and evolution. I can’t predict the future and neither can you. I think explaining that context verbally is less harmful than implying it with weasel words.
And even if my desired change doesn’t happen, I think it’s valuable to challenge the assumptions built into these words to make people think about them and the way they are used instead of just blindly accepting “the criminal was arrested”.
Legal systems are a necessity as long as there are people willing to do violence to others. Ideally, they'll constrain the use of violence on behalf of the collective to cases where it's the only way to stop violence being perpetrated by individuals: To arrest them.
Practically, any human creation will have flaws, and nearly all systems will be biased in favour of the powerful. That doesn't categorically make it useless for the people.
Arrest in international waters is actually legal during a naval blockade. If a ship has announced its intention to break a the naval blockade, continues to head for it, and doesn’t react to hails, then it’s legal. Look up maritime law on blockades.
Same as you can arrest a criminal just before committing a crime.
Wrong. Israels actions of blockade and starvation are illegal. Full stop. The law you're referring to does not apply to a nation in violation of these laws. Israel doesn't get to point to a law to protect them as they violate other international laws and genocide a population. You're just wrong. That's not how laws work. You can't just read one law and then say "welp, guess they can do this". They can't when the very blockade itself is illegal. The blockade itself has to be a legal blockade that does not starve a population of aid and committing acts of genocide.
You're just so embarrassingly wrong.

That's the point... Why let a few influencers enter a war zone with the risk of them getting killed when they could instead easily let a few trucks waiting in front of the boarder enter Gaza?
welp: there's your problem! right here:
Reading the Bible
The Epicurian Paradox. God claims to be omnipresent, omnipotent, and omnibenevolent. But the mere existence of evil overwhelmingly disproves this claim:
- If god is able and willing to stop evil, but evil is able to hide from/fool god, god cannot be omnipresent.
- If god is able to find all evil and willing to stop it, but unable to do so, god cannot be omnipotent.
- If god is able to find evil and stop it, but unwilling to do so, god cannot be omnibenevolent.
In any of the three cases, if evil exists, god has been proven a liar in at least one of the three claims. Potentially two, or even all three. But at least one must be true if evil exists. And if at least one is true and god is a liar, why are we following him?
So glad those Italian and Spanish ships did…
Being there likely saved Gretta from getting merc'd by an IDF sniper.
They're not doing enough, but they're also not doing nothing.
They said from the beginning that they were only there to rescue anyone should they end up in the ocean. Not to protect the aid boats.
The fact that they openly said that tells you all you need to know about thier governments.
For once, it doesn't have to be blackmail. The Zionists have Uncle Sam. Relations between the EU and the US are already not the strongest they've been. Risking the ire of a large power like that is not exactly smart diplomacy.
Would it have been the right thing to do? Absolutely.
Gaza aid flotilla in the title. Not Greta's flotilla. Her name is there because she's the most well known person there, probably and also because not everyone was arrested.
It says in the article
The Global Sumud Flotilla said most of its vessels were continuing their journey as of early Thursday morning, nearing the coast of the Gaza strip despite the interruptions.
I’m a Guardian reader and I would say in recent months they have taken a largely pro-Palestinian viewpoint. For example: theguardian.com/world/2025/oct…
Parts of Gaza are experiencing famine because of an Israeli blockade, while more than half a million people have been displaced south by bombing over the past six weeks. Israel insists there is no famine, contrary to the findings of most global aid bodies. Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has killed at least 66,200 Palestinians and wounded about 170,000, according to the Gaza health authority.
That doesn’t sound like Zionist propaganda to me, it sounds like an accurate tally of the suffering that Israel is causing.
At least 53 Palestinians killed in fresh wave of Israeli attacks on Gaza
Military offensive stepped up as Hamas leaders consider Trump’s 20-point peace planWilliam Christou (The Guardian)
Strike called in Italy, protests flare over interception of Gaza aid ships
Italian unions called a general strike for Friday in solidarity with the international aid flotilla for Gaza, while protests sprang up in a number of cities late on Wednesday after reports that the ships had been intercepted by military personnel.
In the southern city of Naples, demonstrators got into the main railway station and halted train traffic, while police surrounded the Termini railway station in Rome after protesters gathered close to entrances.
...
In the northwestern city of Genoa, the USB announced that it intended to block the port and called on all protesters to gather at 10 p.m. (2000 GMT) at one of the main entrances.
Over the past two weeks, protesting Italian dockworkers have prevented various ships from docking and loading, targeting vessels they say were involved in trade with Israel.

Really? Now?
Palestinians deserve their own state, religious or not, that is not for you to judge
What are you confrontationally blabbing about? If you agree that most countries agrees to have a Palestinian state should be ruled by the PA and Israel and the USA refuse any state, then we have no disagreement.
How about you simply admit that what ticked you and other people downvoting my comment is the fact that I call out Hamas along with Israel? I realize there's a lot of opposition being promoted by pro-Hamas groups, but they really don't need to make it that obvious. Anyway, I'll let you get back at your next attempt to gaslight me.
Although I am surprised that you conceded to a two state solution. Now that there is consensus that Israel is performing genocide, there has been a change in the narrative towards a more of a "destroy Israel, our state is the rightful state" subtly, beginning by claiming that the two state solution is a Zionist lie along with the claim that a lot of people in Israel are discontented with Netanyahu, all to portray them as one great villain (sort of what Netanyahu and his far right buddiers are doing to Palestinians, too). Are you sure you've got the latest memo?
You are claiming that Hamas is the reason why there is no state, it is factually wrong. If you condemn hamas killing or attacking civilians , i eould havr no problem with that.
Poor you crying about being downvoted
It is part of the reason there isn't. Most of it is due to Israel, but that's also why they propped up Hamas over the PA
Everything is due to Israel because even if Hamas is destroyed they will refuse to end occupation. Netanyahu said it there will be no Palestinian state because the land is our.
If you was alive during Nat Turner revolt you would have talked about how Nat Turner was part of the reason why slavery existed for long time instead of saying the salve owner was the only one responsible for it. You have no moral and should be ashamed of your BS

Is it in poor taste to observe that you certainly live up to your username?
I am rational. Russia's Invulnerable Weapon: Why the Golden Dome Won't Do the Job
Greg Mello, director of the Los Alamos Study Group, which studies the US nuclear arsenal, stated that none of the current US or other countries' missile defense systems are capable of countering Russian non-ballistic nuclear weapons.
According to him, the US initiative to create the Golden Dome system is technically unfeasible. Mello noted that Russia possesses weapons such as the Poseidon underwater drone, hypersonic missiles, and cruise missiles, which are specifically designed to overcome missile defense systems.
He emphasized that instead of fanciful projects like Golden Dome, real arms control measures are needed to ensure mutual security.
Two things can both be true:
- There are classified programs that Greg Mello may or may not know about that are capable of countering all three of those weapons listed. There might also be classified Russian programs that are capable of countering those counters. And you can be sure we know at least something about those countering counters. Kill Chain analysis has been a huge focus area for the last few years, so the US military has developed ways to counter threats.
- Golden Dome is still a wildly expensive, fanciful, and technically infeasible program. Even if we know exactly how to detect and counter these threats, the US is a gigantic fucking country with TONS of border to enclose. It's one thing to have a way to detect, track, target, and shoot down one of those three things. It's another to do that for 40 at the same time in wildly different areas of the world (made up number since I have no idea how many weapons Russia is able to unleash). It's a lot easier to protect an area the size of New Jersey than it is to protect the entire US.
40 at the same time
You're lowballing it just a little there. Current estimates put the number of Russian nukes at about 5,500.
Hypersonics, at least, are likely overrated. They reduce the window between detection and countermeasure deployment. They also can't maneuver very well without losing their hypersonic speed or generating too much heat, and therefore travel on a predictable course.
Drones have been the champion technology of the Ukraine war, and that's probably the future. Of course, those are also a reason why a Golden Dome plan wouldn't work.
the Iron Dome, which is what trump wants to install (and calls the Golden Dome) was never meant to stop ICCBM missiles. It's a system designed to catch the relatively short ranged rockets being used by Hamas and other missiles.
Trump is a moron.
To put the system into perspective, Israel has about 8,500 square miles of landmass. the US? 3.2 million.
It's actually so much worse than that, as the article explains.
Iron Dome was the inspiration, but with Golden Dome what they're planning is space based interception. It's Reagan's Star Wars project back from the dead.
The problem with this is two fold; no known system in the world can reliably intercept ICBMs, and doing so from space is ludicrously expensive. It costs, in effect, about ten times as much to shoot down one ICBM as it does to build an launch one, meaning that a peer adversary can just build more missiles and flood the system. To stop even a Hundred ICBMs would cost hundreds of billions of dollars. China has six hundred.
Basically, like so much of what Trump spends money on, it will amount to a very expensive but completely useless toy.
They probably* don’t even have launch vehicles for the warheads they do have. That particular branch of their military isnextremely corrupt, with people selling everything they could off on the black market. Including, apparently, launch fuel.
I would find it surprising if they could mass produce them in any meaningful quantity.
(*not something I’m willing to bet on, to be clear. This is one of those plan for the worst case. The worst case is probably they sold off a portion of warheads to the highest bidder a la Sum of All Fears but the rest are all operational.)
I swear to fucking god if they do this, actually name it "Golden Dome," so I have to think about this fascist piece of orange shit every time it is mentioned, for years to come, I'm going to lose it.
I just want nothing more than to never have to read about this piece of human detritus ever again.
Greg Mello, director of the Los Alamos Study Group, which studies the US nuclear arsenal, stated that none of the current US or other countries’ missile defense systems are capable of countering Russian non-ballistic nuclear weapons.
Interesting. Can we have a link to this? It's not in the article.
Hmm, so that's a civilian think tank. The name had me thinking it might be somewhat official.
Historically, interception has been a pipe dream, but in the 21st century complexity is cheap. I do worry a little that it's not as far fetched as it sounds, and MAD might break down.
What's the point?
"You better believe we have weapons you can't defend from, like, at all! We could totally take on NATO, easily. So like, don't, like, even think about helping Ukraine any more!"
Russia (and/or the Soviet Union) has been doing variations of that to Finland since WWII.
That's basically why it took us so fucking long to join NATO, because the argument used to be "uuuh, we can't afford to piss off Russia!"
But since they obviously don't care about their own capacity for war and invaded Ukraine, we thought, "fuck it, why not".
So Russia used to have a bit of a buffer with Finland but since we joined, Putler is having even more heatenings.
Thus this sort of saber rattling.
Seeing as we're on .ml I wouldn't be surprised if Davel or Dessalines or one of the others just deletes this as some sort of anti-Russian discrimination and bans me.
Oh and just to remind Vanja. Don't try to come over our Eastern border. #(Unless you're alone and escaping Putlerism, but you should do that before the remining is done.)*
If they have this amazing weaponry, why aren’t they deploying it against Ukraine?
because they can beat the shit out of ukr civilians every night for cheap. hypersonic weapons are expensive.
the underwater drones: well ukraine basically sunk their navy in the black sea, so probably not there...
they did use some cruise missiles early in the conflict, but again, expensive compared to shaheeds and other shitty terror drone weapon platforms. when you're bombing apartments you don't need pinpoint accuracy.
I'd also wager they don't have very many of the fancy weapons ready at any given time, and reserve them for conflict against other nuclear powers.
remember, russia has always underestimated ukraine in this fight, at the very beginning the invaders brought their dress uniforms because they were told they'd be marching in victory parades in just a few days.
thedailybeast.com/russians-pla…
in short, I don't think these weapons would be all that useful against ukraine but poland and denmark might see some action if things continue to escalate. or if Ukraine starts landing significant hits against moscow itself.

Lifting the Moratorium on IRBM Deployment: Consequences for Belarus and Russia
Russia has lifted its moratorium on the deployment of intermediate- and shorter-range missiles, paving the way for the deployment of the Oreshnik system in Belarus. This is a response to the growth of NATO missile forces in Europe and the changing strategic balance.
The Oreshnik is a ballistic missile with a range of up to 5,500 km and hypersonic warheads (up to Mach 10), virtually invulnerable to missile defenses and equipped with decoys. Deployment in Belarus reduces the flight time to Europe by 3-4 minutes, threatening key NATO facilities, including NATO headquarters in Brussels.
Russia believes the collapse of the arms control system is a consequence of the actions of the US and its allies. The deployment of the Oreshnik system in Belarus is a necessary measure to restore the strategic balance.
Oreshnik and Nuclear Weapons - a Strategic Deterrent
The Belarusian Ministry of Defense explained that the West's hype surrounding the deployment of Russian tactical nuclear weapons and the Oreshnik system is due to their role as a strategic deterrent. Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Belarusian Armed Forces Viktor Tumar noted that these weapons are intended for use only in extreme cases, but their very existence discourages adversaries from aggressive plans.
He emphasized that the presence of tactical nuclear weapons and the Oreshnik system allows Minsk to avoid an arms race and preserve funds for social programs. According to Tumar, the West, on the contrary, is increasing its military presence and reducing social spending.
"the West's hype".
Heh.
The Rubezh/Oreshnik/Whatever you want to call it exists as less than 10 missiles. And of those, already two have been used. They were made almost 20 years ago and include components whose production was ended in 1990's and can no longer be produced by any factory in any country.
The only reason Lukašenka is talking about the Rubezh missiles is that Putin wants to scare us into giving Ukraine to the Russia. I haven't really seen any western hype of the Rubezh in the way Lukašenka talks about.
And furthermore: Rubezh is a type of missile that is banned by international agreements on reducing the nuclear danger. That the Russia has held to almost ten of those for several decades tells a lot about how dangerous the Russia is. While others have stopped using such mid-range ballistic missiles and have scrapped them, the Russia had just hidden them. And now has dug them back out and put the laber "Oreshnik" on them. Them having launched already two of their Rubezh (or Oreshnik, if you prefer that name) tells that they only use them for the purpose of scaring. If they really planned to use them for something serious, they would not launch one fifth of them without nuclear warheads as they have done now.
A cheater country, such as the Russia is, must fall.
you want to call it exists as less than 10 missiles. And of those, already two have been used.
maybe you give me source?
They were made almost 20 years ago and include parts whose production was ended in 1990’s and can no longer be produced by any factory in any country.
You idiot. Sorry, but its real fact.
Rubezh is a type of missile that is banned by international agreements on reducing the nuclear danger. That the Russia has held to almost ten of those for several decades tells a lot about how dangerous the Russia is. While others have stopped using such mid-range ballistic missiles and have scrapped them, the Russia had just hidden them.
Maybe you tell the international agreements?
you want to call it exists as less than 10 missiles. And of those, already two have been used.maybe you give me source?
This is the first thing that I found with a quick internet search. It'll give you enough pointers to find the rest of the information, I'm sure! So, here goes: eurasiantimes.com/russias-game…
Maybe you tell the international agreements?
Here you go: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intermed…
And then: There were blog posts analyzing the debris of the Rubezh missile launched back in November and December 2024. The debris shows that it is not a new development. It cannot be directly proven that the Oreshnik and Rubezh are the same missile, because Rubezh, being against treaties signed by USSR, was a very secret project, of which only very little information leaked. But, the debris shows that the "Oreshnik" missiles were made around when we know Rubezh had been made. And they are missiles for the same purpose. It's unlikely that the Russia would have developed two separate missile types for the same purpose at the same time.

Are the flotilla recognised as legal humanitarian aid providers? I understand from other threads that Israel is legally required to allow humanitarian aid through. I assume here this would mean recognized humanitarian aid. Else it would be akin to just random people trying to run a blockade without a legally recognized reason, which would not put the IDF in the 'legal' wrong.
Their subsequent treatment of the flotilla and it's crew is something else to discuss of course
I don't even know if there's such a thing as 'legal humanitarian aid' as opposed to an 'illegal' one.
A bit of a tangent but just today I watched a short about the history of what British colonialist did to the Hijra in India.
Basically they went over there and went "more than two genders? THAT'S ILLEGAL."
Yet nowadays we have transphobes always reciting how it's somehow a woke new thing to not have the sexual sensibilities of a Victorian British person.
No no, Israel are only allowing aid providers that they are okay with into Palestine. This means going directly through Israel's singular entry system, which through a joint program with the US called USAID, takes the aid and trickle feeds the food and occasional blankets to a relatively small group of Palestinians. It is thoroughly controlled. Letting humanitarian aid access via any other means would mean Palestinians actually receive life-saving care.
Don't forget that the purpose of the mass murder of Palestinians is the same as it was 3,500 years ago, and hasn't changed since Israel was created by England in 1948 to facilitate the mass migration of Jews: To completely erase the Palestinian people and have the Land their god Promised. Israelites - that is to say, Zionists who believe in stopping at nothing to establish an ethnically cleansed Israel - are, and always have been, a horrible, murderous colony. They are the root cause of the common knowledge that religion is the largest scapegoat of historical violence. Hell, the word 'scapegoat' originates from the ancient Hebrew ritual of superficially absolving a community's sense of guilt for their sins.

Standing question as to how far they'd get. With Italian and Turkish support, there was some amount of speculation as to whether the IDF would risk a shooting war with a NATO state over a handful of civilian protesters doing an aquatic sit-in.
What's extra crazy is that they're being arrested 80 miles off the coast in international waters, dragged into Israel, forced at gunpoint to sign deportation orders, and then being forced out again. That is, of course, assuming none of the soldiers decide to kill one or more of them along the way.

Seeking recommendations for federated Q&A forums on Linux and software issues
I'm looking for federated Q&A forums specifically focused on Linux and software-related issues. I'm not referring to platforms like NodeBB, Discourse, Lemmy, Kbin, PieFed, etc. I'm asking for specific instances that focus on Q&A about Linux and other software related issues. I know of some popular non-federated platforms like Stack Exchange, AskUbuntu, Arch Linux Forum, etc. But I'm particularly interested in federated sites.
If you have any recommendations for such forums, please share them! Thank you!

Honestly, I wouldn’t recommend adding the feature to mark comments as solutions. Websites like StackOverflow often have many answers that aren’t the best marked as solutions, and I believe platforms like Codidact have learned from those mistakes.
Reputation is a key factor that motivates people to contribute answers. However, StackOverflow suffers from over-moderation due to the reputation gained from moderating. I’m curious about how Codidact has addressed this issue.
Instead, consider allowing users to mark questions as solved rather than comments. Implementing a voting system similar to Slashdot, where users can categorize responses as helpful, funny, or other descriptors, might be more effective. This way, contributors are incentivized to help, as they can gain reputation points. Then a leaderboard showcasing the most helpful contributors on a weekly or monthly basis could further encourage participation.
| Feature | Description | Benefits |
|---|---|---|
| User Profiles with Reputation Points | Allow users to earn points for asking questions, providing answers, and receiving upvotes. | Encourages participation and rewards knowledgeable contributors. |
| Question Marking System | Enable users to mark questions as solved, rather than comments. | Simplifies the process of identifying resolved queries. |
| Voting System | Implement a voting mechanism for answers (e.g., helpful, insightful, etc.). | Helps surface the best answers and encourages quality contributions. |
| Leaderboards | Create weekly or monthly leaderboards showcasing top contributors. | Fosters competition and motivates users to engage more actively. |
| Categorization and Tagging | Allow users to categorize questions and tag them for easier navigation. | Improves searchability and organization of content. |
| Search Functionality | Develop a robust search feature that allows users to find questions and answers quickly. | Enhances user experience by making information easily accessible. |

While a drone defense system is of course a mandatory requirement of modern warfare, the real solution is to ramp-up Ukraine's ability to strike russia.
Additoanly the EU really needs to implement their own hybrid warfare methods against the russians.
For the first part at least. Though I must say I disagree that conducting hybrid “little green men” warfare outside of Ukraine is a good idea.

Tldr: youtube forced ai into video monitoring and it keeps killing videos it shouldn't, so instead of saying Ai is bad they're blaming af blockers because why not lie when there's no repercussions?
YouTube views are dropping because they are using AI to vet and cull age innappropriate content from minors. the problem is the ai is very bad at its job and marks way too many videos as not advertiser friendly, which effectively kills YouTube promoting that video in feeds. this is the default view for new accounts, so you have to specifically turn off parental controls to see a normal feed. this started happening about 4 months ago. a number of channels I watch have made comments about this, including Redlettermedia

Israel to close last remaining route from southern Gaza to the north as it continues offensive on Gaza City – Middle East crisis live
The Israeli military said it will close on Wednesday the last remaining route for residents of southern Gaza to access the north, as it presses its offensive on Gaza City.
The military’s Arabic-language spokesperson Avichay Adraee said on X:
"Al-Rashid Street will be closed to traffic from the southern sector area at 12:00 (0900 GMT). Movement southward will be allowed for those who were unable to evacuate Gaza City. At this stage, the [Israeli military] permits free movement southward without inspection."
In figures reported less than two weeks ago, the UN said that more than a quarter of a million people had been displaced from Gaza City in the previous month. Tens of thousands more have been forced to flee makeshift homes and shelters daily in the face of a new Israeli offensive, it added.

TSMC and Taiwan have all the leverage. If China invaded Taiwan, the US would be fucked and semiconductor supply cripple the states, and all the stuff Trump is investing personal money in (crypto, AI, etc)
If the US wants a robust semiconductor industry, they should break Intel’s chip design and fab into two separate companies, and lean into more chip-act type investments.
Trump returns to '51st state' rhetoric in speech to U.S. military officials
"Canada called me a couple of weeks ago, they want to be part of it, to which I said, 'Well, why don't you just join our country. You become 51 — become the 51st state — and you get it for free,'" Trump told the assembled officials.
"So, I don't know if that made a big impact, but it does make a lot of sense."
Trump also claimed Canada is having "a hard time up there" because "as you know, with tariffs, everyone's coming into our country." The president then boasted about investment leaving Canada and other countries and going into the United States, pointing to automobile plants.

I've watched part of this speech, and it made me wonder if his handlers actually sometimes roleplay stuff for him. Like, some stories he tells sound like they're based on things he experienced in real life, but they're obviously absurd, so maybe it was just things that were played for him to make him feel good?
E. g. the part about the leaders of Azerbaijan and the other country (Trump seems to have forgotten its name, once again):
Azerbaijan was — this was going on for 36 years. They said, it’s not solvable, sir. You can’t — don’t do it. I said, I will do it. I will do it. And I got on the phone with the two countries. They were great. They were great. I knew immediately. I knew as soon as I started talking to them, we’re going to solve that war. And we did. Now they’re so happy. Now they’re friends. One said he’s been President for 32 years — 22 years. He said, you know, for 22 years, I did nothing but kill his people. They were in the room together at the Oval Office. And they started off spread like this. They have the beautiful Resolute Desk. And one was here, and one was here. You couldn’t get further away. That’s the furthest I’ve ever seen two people in front of me. And as the hour went by, they got closer, closer, closer. And at the end of the hour, we had it done. And they hugged and hugged and hugged. And I said, that’s so nice, and you’re going to remain friends. And I spoke to them — one of them — the other day. He said, no, he’s now my friend. But for 22 years, he’s been the head of Azerbaijan for 22 years. And the other guy — great guy, too — seven. And you know that war. That was a war that was not solvable. He said, for seven years. And the other one said, for 22 years, all I did was kill his people. That’s all I’ve done. I said, well, we’re going to put a stop to that. So we solved that.
Well ok, maybe he's just completely talking out of his ass here. But look at this story about some tariff billions they found on a shelf:
But the money coming in is, we’ve never seen anything like it. The other day, they had $31 billion that they found. Thirty-one billion dollars. So we found $31 billion, and we’re not sure from where it came. A gentleman came in, a financial guy. I said, well, what does that mean? He said, we don’t know where it came. I said, check the tariff shelf. No, sir. The tariffs haven’t started in that sector yet. I said, yes, they have. They started seven weeks ago. Check it. It comes back 20 minutes later. Sir, you’re right. It came from tariffs. Thirty-one billion. That’s enough to buy a lot of battleships, Admiral, to use an old term.
When he says a "gentleman came in, a financial guy", I really wonder if it was some staffer dressed up to tell him a feel-good story about tariffs.

Girlfriend in CanadaA convenient way for a character to disabuse the idea that they're either gay, too socially inept for a relationship or simply unlucky in love is to claim that they indeed have a girlfriend — but the other characters have never met her because she lives in Canada. She doesn't visit very often, but when she does they just spend all day in bed. Look, here's her entry in his phone's contact list. No, you can't see a picture.
The idea is that since "she" lives in a different country, and presumably would have to get a passport and go through all that hassle in order to visit her "boyfriend", it's particularly tempting to make her Canadian as a way of discouraging others from asking too many questions.
The tactic could be scaled up.

The tariffs are absolutely fucking up our country right now, and I live in the US, and we absolutely deserve it. It's affecting every single one of my projects (I work in an engineering/manufacturing company). Turns out 10-25% tariffs really cuts out a lot of the margin for people so we've had to significantly bump prices on aerospace components. This in turn will drive ticket prices up eventually as well. It's also affecting our groceries. And then the side effects of all of it, is the boycotts from numerous countries. It's absolutely crushing our trade.
That said, all of the boycotts are absolutely fantastic. Keep it up. Our lead-addled half of the US needs to understand what isolationist policies do to our country. Maybe it'll be the wake up call that people need to understand that international cooperation is the key to success.
Our lead-addled half of the US needs to understand
Ooft, good luck with that bit. You have to understand, these are people of the land.
I am watching this and wondering how long before the global economy decides not to treat the USD as the standard...
A great deal of our success has been being a solid and easy choice as a global currency, and this really screws that up.
If you've read the Constitution then I've got some bad news for you. Unless you interpret its amendments, then good news. But then there was the Southeast Asia doctrine by Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon... which is bad news. But then there is good news if you follow the War Powers Resolution of 1973. Oh but then there's some muddy waters about Emergency Powers which goes back and forth with the Supreme Court which ultimately is bad news. Even worse was the Authorization for Use of Military Force against Terrorists passed by Congress around 9/11.
Realistically none of this matters because Trump has never had a precedent of following the law or respecting boundaries with little girls so I guess I just wasted a few moments of your time.

Italian navy to stop assisting Gaza flotilla despite fears of Israeli attack
Italy said it will stop accompanying the international flotilla trying to deliver aid to Gaza, despite concerns by activists that the fleet will be attacked within the coming hours. Italy and Spain deployed navy vessels to assist the boats after they were hit by drones armed with stun grenades last week.

Talk about a poisoned gift...
Nobody wants gifts from Israel, but Ukraine desperately needs the hardware.
Damned if they do, damned if they don't...
As a finn, I very much want "gifts" from Israel. Their air defence systems are amazing, and they have very nice looking defence capabilities against drones. Which seems to be a growing risk from Russia.
I hope nobody is surprised to hear that I value the people of Finland over the people of palestine.
Honestly I’d rather Ukraine have them than Israel. Am I supposed to be mad that they’ve micro-disarmed by doing this? Fuck no that’s a bit less firepower in Israel’s hands
Keep going! We love your charity Israel, give it ALL to Ukraine! 🥴
No, but I didn’t delude myself into thinking it matters either, and now somehow because Ukraine has weapons that Israel didn’t use in their genocide they’ve got cooties or something.
People in here like “Now Ukraine is guilty by association! Tainted morals! Blood on their hands!” - it doesn’t matter.
Now, what’s fucked up, who does have blood on their hands, is the United Ststes who are obviously going to resupply Israel.
But that doesn’t make Ukraine guilty.

FBI boss Kash Patel gave New Zealand officials 3D-printed guns illegal to possess under local laws
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — On a visit to New Zealand, FBI Director Kash Patel gave the country’s police and spy bosses gifts of inoperable pistols that were illegal to possess under local gun laws and had to be destroyed, New Zealand law enforcement agencies told The Associated Press. The plastic 3D-printed replica pistols formed part of display stands Patel presented to at least four senior New Zealand security officials in July. Patel, the most senior Trump administration official to visit the country so far, was in Wellington to open the FBI’s first standalone office in New Zealand.
Pistols are tightly restricted weapons under New Zealand law and possessing one requires an additional permit beyond a regular gun license. Law enforcement agencies didn’t specify whether the officials who met with Patel held such permits, but they couldn’t have legally kept the gifts if they didn’t.
It wasn’t clear what permissions Patel had sought to bring the weapons into the country. A spokesperson for Patel told the AP Tuesday that the FBI would not comment.
US FBI Director Kash Patel visits New Zealand, immediately provides local officials with 3d printed, potentially operable firearms...
... which is a crime, that could carry up to a 3 year prison/jail sentence in NZ...
... and would also potentially be somewhere between a misdemeanor and a felony depending on where you are in the US, as 3d printed firearms are generally without serial numbers and are thus 'ghost guns', which are often illegal if unregistered, if not outright banned, though this differs from state to state and city to city.
(Oh also, I guess he is so concerned about properly investigating the death of Charlie Kirk that he is uh, personally looking for leads in New Zealand, or something.)

3d printed firearms are generally without serial numbers and are thus ‘ghost guns’, which are illegal
This is not correct. Under federal law, building them for yourself is legal. However, selling them without a serial number is illegal. Manufacturing them without having a license is even more illegal.
The law in the various states may be more restrictive.
Yep, and then if you put a 'not a pistol brace but an actual buttstock' on one of those things without registering it as an SBR... probably you are now a felon, maybe?
???
What is it for a rifle, 16 inch min barrel, 26 inch from toe to tip min length?
You would think this would spur bullpup adoption / creation around those exact specs... and I guess the PSA Wolverine, Kel Tech RDB and Springfield Hellion are that, though ... the general gun community seems quite hesitant toward and skeptical of anything that doesn't match their already learned standard AR 15 muscle memory.
That... depends.
Generally, puppies have less recoil simply as function of being a bit heavier, literally having more mass, but this can vary a lot depending on what you are comparing to, and the exact bullpup's internal mechanics.
This is assuming we are comparing a bullpuppy and standard layout weapon shooting the same caliber, of course, from similar barrel lengths.
However, another large factor maybe isn't quite recoil per se, but the overall balance point, center of mass of the weapon.
A lot of guntubers I have seen give bullpups a decent chance say that they are so well balanced, that you can reasonably accurately operate them single handedly, which is fairly important in a combat scenario where maybe you get shot in an arm or shoulder.
They also say that it is easier to get the weapon aimed at a target, and that follow up shots are also easier to aim precisely and get off more rapidly, because of the balance of the weapon, and that it is less fatiguing to hold a bullpuppy in a shouldered, ready to aim and fire position, and you can do this longer without your arms tiring.
As a video game modifier and fps enjoyer, I find it funny that that last part is almost never modelled or simulated by games. Sure, sniper oriented games will have a hold breath mechanic, but almost no games simulate that... just holding a weapon upright, shouldered, sighted in... this is tiring.
Like, grab a 7 pound semi gun shaped object and hold it as if you are just 'iron sighted in', in a game... I'll bet your arms start getting weak and wobbly in a number of minutes, now try that with double or triple the weight to approimate an older /heavier rifle or MG of some kind, and you'll see how silly the notion of just running around with like an M60, and using it as an assault rifle is, unless you are a fucking beefcake.
There are also studies that show that is is significantly easier to train an untrained shooter to be a decently accurate marksman with a bullpup than it is to do the same with a standard layout weapon.
But flip side of that are things like uh, field repairs can be more difficult and time consuming to repair, and widely reported heavier and/or chunkier, less smooth trigger pulls.
==For the record, I've shot a number of different weapons and calibers irl, but never an actual bullpup, so my 'bullpup knowledge' is second hand or theoretical==
Such as?
Genuienly, maybe I've missed a tac shooter or milsim and could get a new recommendation to check out, but I am mostly dogging on ... the kinds of shooter games that have very realistic graphics stylings, but have rather arcady, unrealistic actual game mechanics.
I am not saying no games do this, but I am saying that such games tend to be less popular, more niche, their own subgenre.
That's the problem, I can't remember 🙁
A quick Google says maybe Arma 3, 7 Days to Die, and Escape from Tarkov. But I haven't played any of those, I think it's biased towards newer games.
Hah, ok so...
I have never played 7 days to die.
I have played waaaaay too much Arma 3, and from what I remember, to actually get shouldering a weapon to be its own distinct fatigue / wobbly arm mechanic, as if it was its own sort of mini stamina meter... you have to use ACE or some set of massive realism overhaul style mods.
Like, iirc, vanilla Arma 3 will make your aim shitty after you just sprinted a kilometer, but ... the act of shouldering your weapon alone does not cause its own kind of fatigue.
I have played a bit of EFT, but given that it is full of try hards and hackers, and is also basically constantly broken in some way, I haven't played much in a while, but I do not remember if it did or did not have this mechanic... but I am leaning toward no, at least a few years back, it also did not have a fatigue mechsnic specific to shouldering/aiming a weapon.
Maybe it does now?
???
But like.. COD and Battlefield, much more popular, definitely do not do this.
You know, thats the only one that I also remember as actually having that feature.
But yeah, defunct now.
On the flipside of that... I think that America's Army may actually have been the first multiplayer fps to have ragdoll physics.
Not 100% sure about that, but like... 90% sure?
Either way thanks for the reminiscing lol.
Might as well also mention Squad, though I have not played in a while, don't know if they have a shouldered/sighted in arm fatigue mechanic.
Personally I've only handled a bullpup. It was created as a replacement for the old M16 the army used to use. Didn't have much training with it, after a session of virtual training, we were sent to the live firing range to shoot. Managed to get a couple of shots under marksmen. As a video game enjoyer getting to shoot, and throwing live nades, was probably the only fun part about basic training.
So yes I think it's a pretty good weapon for even novices to shoot accurately. Idk about fatigue tho since we were made to carry that thing around all the time and just got used to the weight as my own.
I more mean fatigue specifically in your arms, that makes it more difficult to aim accurately the longer you have the weapon shouldered, different from the kind of general fatigue based basically on the weight of your overall kit / loadout.
But either way, thank you for the first hand account!
Short version:
Ok, the actual legal status of this is quite complicated, I will ammend that section with more qualifiers.
::: spoiler Long version:
I'll give you that at the Federal area, right now, this is not illegal, to make and possess your own unregistered, unserialized firearm... but if you go by the proportion of people that live in states or cities that have just outright made possession of a ghost gun a crime in and of itself...
worldpopulationreview.com/stat…
Yeah thats uh... at least ~126 million US residents where unregistered ghost guns are specifically some kind of illegal at the State level, and thats likely an undercount given that there are likely a lot of larger cities / counties that have their own restrictions, but are within States that don't have them at that level...
So yeah, it is probably explicitly illegal by local/state law for about half the US by population to self mfg and/or possess a 3d printed gun with no serials / registration
:::

Yeah, I live in one of those states. But even here, it's legal to make with no serial number, you just have to register the creation.
Or at least that's what the law was. I know it changed a few years ago, I haven't bothered keeping up since it doesn't affect me.
However, selling them without a serial number is illegal.
That's not correct either . Federally it is legal to sell a self built firearm with no serial number as long as you did not originally build it with the intention of selling.
Intention
So if I make 100 of them and then lick each one of them, and then decide they don’t taste good… Selling them is OK right?
Pistols are tightly restricted weapons under New Zealand law and possessing one requires an additional permit beyond a regular gun license.
Restricting pistols (i.e. the type of firearm most useful for crime and least useful for hunting or militia defense) more than long guns makes a ton of sense, and it's a shame the US doesn't do it that way too.
FBI Director Kash Patel gave the country’s police and spy bosses gifts of inoperable pistolsUS FBI Director Kash Patel visits New Zealand, immediately provides local officials with 3d printed, potentially

Why do you change the narrative of the article you linked?
1) I tried to demark a clear difference between the quoted text of the article, and my own editorializing, not in a quote block.
2) If you read the actual article, it does actually describe that the reason why these 3d printed weapons were destroyed by the NZ police was that they were assessed as 'potentially operable firearms'.
From the article:
Inoperable weapons are treated as though they’re operable in New Zealand if modifications could make them workable again. The pistols were judged by gun regulators to be potentially operable and were destroyed, New Zealand’s Police Commissioner Richard Chambers told AP in a statement Tuesday.
I did not change the narrative, I simply read more of the article than the initial subset I presented in a quote block.
Please actually read the whole article, not just the preview sampler.
Hah, my Tolkien lore may not be quite up to snuff but uh...
... would that even matter?
Uhm... yes. Yeah.
I am also kind of confused by this.
The FBI has like... sub offices, attachés to consulates/embassies... but uh... thats for coordinating with local law enforcement and I guess handling US expats.
Yeah I don't know what the fuck Patel is doing here, unless he is kind of just publically admitting that all those other FBI sub offices and attachés just routinely handle Five Eyes / Nine Eyes / However many fucking Eyes type shit.
Which is, I mean, yeah, duh, but also, you're not supposed to just say that outloud, Patel.
You're supposed to be investigating the globalist deep state panopticon world controllers, not fucking building a new branch office for them...
Oh my god his brain must be the size of a walnut, he isn't even good at what he is trying to be good at, holy shit.
I'm almost inclined to believe that he just wants an excuse to holiday in NZ. Because if it's for spying... Good grief. Have they bungled it up badly.
...I mean, OPSEC IS CLEAN!
The FBI is who you call when you want to investigate (and prosecute) international gangs/drug cartels (which is why he was there in the first place)
The CIA is who you call when you want a country's leader shot with a shard of frozen pufferfish poison.
I mean, the CIA has frequently, with documentation, illegally operated on US soil... often by facilitating international gangs and drug cartels...
But yes, the ice gun with puffer fish poison is also a thing too lol.
Anyway uh, the article says:
News of Patel’s visit caused ripples in New Zealand at the time because the opening of the new FBI office in Wellington wasn’t divulged to news outlets or the public until it had already happened. An FBI statement in July said the move aligned New Zealand with FBI missions in other Five Eyes intelligence-sharing nations, which also include the United States, Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom. The office would provide a local mission for FBI staff who have operated with oversight from Canberra, Australia, since 2017, the statement said.

"When we were talking, we never raised that issue," Foreign Minister Winston said Thursday.
Patel said what he said because he is a fucking moron. If Patel lied, he is a moron for creating diplomatic problems for an ally. if Patel didn't lie, he just brought a whole lot of unnecessary attention to a spy base in NZ.

For many workers, the membership card mattered less than the struggle, and they did not hesitate to strike even if they were not members of the unions that called the strike.
This is common in Italy. A minor part of the workforce is part of a union (our unions are different from what an American might be used to, btw), mainly because membership has a cost (usually ~1% of your wages), and because many are afraid of what employers may think when they find out.
Non-members still regularly join strikes and protests when they care about the subjects.
American unions are also paid through wages. Maybe a bit less than a full 1% though.
Unfortunately if you are a non-union worker and you strike you can and will be fired

I wonder what is worth more to ABC/Disney, all those direct subscribers, or these affiliates that are consolidating into two or three big media companies?
This might be the beginning of the death of the affiliate model. What would happen if Sinclair simply stopped affiliating with ABC altogether? They own enough stations that they can do their own thing. Would it matter if there is no ABC station in Mobile, Alabama, if people who still want to watch can stream it?
The problem for OTA affiliates/broadcasters is content. Their business model relies on getting eyeballs so they can justify what they charge for advertising. Creating content that your viewers actually want to watch is expensive.
Aside from some of the larger PBS stations,
I don't know that any of the major broadcasters, like Sinclair, have any experience producing their own content.
They can throw their little tantrum and refuse to air Kimmel, but that's just going to hurt them in the short term as advertisers will decide OTA timeslots are not a good investment.

Linux to Support Firewire Until 2029The ancient connectivity standard still has years of life ahead of it.
Firewire is getting a new lease on life and will have extended support up to 2029 on Linux operating systems. Phoronix reports that a Linux maintainer Takashi Sakamoto has volunteered to oversee the Firewire subsystem for Linux during this time, and will work on Firewire's core functions and sound drivers for the remaining few that still use the connectivity standard.
Further, Takashi Sakamoto says that his work will help users transition from Firewire to more modern technology standards (like perhaps USB 2.0). Apparently, Firewire still has a dedicated fanbase that is big enough to warrant six more years of support. But we suspect this will be the final stretch for Firewire support, surrounding Linux operating systems. Once 2029 comes around, there's a good chance Firewire will finally be dropped from the Linux kernel altogether.
I have a feeling its mostly due to some audio and video hardware that has some real longevity. I've got a VHS+minidv player that I am transferring old videos from using FireWire (well, for the minidv. VHS is s-video capture).
I'm just passing a FireWire PCI card through to a VM though. Though with how old the box is, it doesnt really need to be a VM. Thats a whole different discussion though.
I had some FireWire audio interfaces too, 8ch and 16ch, but I got rid of those a while back. I'm sure someone's making use of it though! Probably the m-audio delta 1010 I sold too, I think they are still going for a few hundred each despite being so long in the tooth.

Yeah, that's a thought...though honestly, unless whatever someone is doing requires real-time processing and adding latency is a problem, they can probably pass it through some other old device that can speak both Firewire and something else.
Probably the m-audio delta 1010
That doesn't have a Firewire interface, does it? I thought I had one of those.

Oh, I'm thinking of the 1010LT, not the 1010. That lives on a PCI card.
No I'm talking about the PCI card, just commenting on the longevity of some devices. I know two people still using FireWire for their interfaces in spare kit (RME fire faces), which got me thinking of some of my old kit I've replaced like the delta1010.
These days I'm mostly pushing dante around
Linux is a good way forward if you want to try it and keep the fireface. Ubuntu is not my favorite base, but Ubuntu Studio (I'd suggest the LTS if you don't need the latest and greatest all the time) is nicely set up, but I'd make one change from their preinstalled and I'd use Reaper over Ardour, but thats me.
Your biggest headache will be plugins if you've got a ton of vst's, not all will work on linux.
I think this is how boycotts are supposed to be. Protest and return if it's successful.
If companies know they won't ever recover from the mistake, why walk it back?
Every joke is based on reality, there's a reason why I wrote what I wrote.
Some people even do this for a living, they call it satire.
Oh, I'm absolutely not criticizing your comment at all. Far from it. It's fully bonkers that you made a joke that was a good joke, and I can't take as joke because it hits too close to reality for me.
Life is tragic, not us.
Corporations don't have stable political identities.
They'll promote trans people if it makes them money.
And then sell trans people to ICE the next quarter if it makes them even more money.
And then use a shell company to sell trans merch to the people boycotting them.
That depends on whether the person in charge has any. See rupert murdoch, or the red bull owner basically saying it would be great if he could also be like murdoch.
A company that's controlled by investors (aka mostly banks trying to get returns) will basically always just chase short term profit though, and that's most of them.
To pressure these companies into doing the morally right thing, we would have to pressure the banks, but that seems hardly realistic since shifting your money away from one in response to an event like this is anywhere from majorly inconvenient to impossible, plus there'd be a direct monetary tradeoff that a lot of people either can't or aren't willing to take.
Conservatives have always been reactionary. This isn't a US thing it's a global thing, they don't want to keep things the same they want to return to some rose-tinted version of history that never existed. They're the ones that call themselves conservative.
But you can't call everyone you disagree with a delusional idiot even if they are, because the insult loses its power. So we might as well call them by then preferred name
It also helps that the conservatives constantly shoot themselves in their foot by defining their own reality. They decide for example that people don't like "the gays" but really it's only the right wing thugs that really have an opinion. The moderate conservatives aren't bothered one way or the other. So now they're trying to sell policies to subjugate a group of people that probably only about quarter of their membership really care about.
It is really obvious with Trump, they just invent entire new things to be mad about, like this Tylenol thing. That just came out of thin air because they couldn't think of anything else to distract people with, but even their own supporters don't really care about it because until about 3 weeks ago it wasn't a claim that anyone was making.
It may seem like a small percentage loss when talking dollar for dollar subscription loss vs Disneys massive revenue, but the scarier thing for their board of directors is damage to their brand.
The thought that a situation like this could cause any long a lasting or irreparable harm to the iconic mouse ears in any way would make keep them awake at night.
Palestine isn't American, it's some far off place that most people have no connection to, no care for or about. And people generally have enough fucking problems in their own life to care about a place they likely will die before visiting or giving two shits about. So beyond just being yet another random thing the news yaps about to keep people scared. It's just not important to most people.
While Kimmel himself may not matter to many. The situation does directly affect the world and problem many Americans are worried about. It's a literal representation of the turmoil that fills many Americans minds.
Not to mention Kimmel is a famous person that people know and have heard of. So his problem actually makes it to the ears of those that will resonate with the problem that his situation is in relation to.
You on the other hand are a literal nobody by comparison that no one but yourself and your immediate group will give any weight to your words.
Not to mention the hell does Palestine have to do with Disney...? That's an extremely tenuous connection.
Its a shitty fact that just cause something's important doesn't mean people can care about it. We all have a limit, and if your own ducks arnt in a row worrying about others is a good way to drive yourself to madness and help no one.
The total allegedly includes subscriptions to Disney+, Hulu and ESPN. That falloff reportedly marked a 436 percent increase over the usual churn rate for the service.
So 317.000 users would have cancelled anyway and the actual protest was 1.3 million. If my googling is right, in total there are ~207 million subscribers.
Summarizing, they lost the 0,6%. Much more that what I expected, but hardly noticeable. I'd love to know how many already subscribed back.

Disney to Stop Reporting Subscriber Numbers for Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+

This is flawed thinking. There is no "them" with a huge salary. The people making decisions are salaried or invested employees, and their livelihood depends on the stock regardless. There isn't "one guy" that this hits, like it would with a salary, there's thousands of investors which must be appeased.
Also, it's likely many of those canceling were people who didn't use the service as much as power users, which means they're losing the cheapest to maintain customers (industry insight, no research to back this up, to be clear).
If we had boycotts and cancelations even a quarter this big across other media giants, our media would be a far better place.
That's an incredibly naive and misinformed opinion you've got there. Most of the companies polluting are not businesses that members of the public buy services from. The vast majority of the largest polluters are business to business providers, Joe public can't do anything about that.
Just look up Monsanto, if we took them out the total pollution worldwide would probably drop by about 50% but they sell to farmers, so you might say well don't buy from farmers that buy from Monsanto but the problem is all farmers buy from Monsanto, so there isn't another option.

It's not safe to be outside at night in that town. you will absolutely get stabbed, shot and/or robbed. It's never happened to me. But I had to stay hotel there once a few years ago and I heard the drug addicts outside screaming all night.

Could have just stopped there 🤷
The whole thing with meth and the like often being overrepresented in rural areas is that there's fewer people around to notice when you want to keep things secret.
This includes addiction, meth labs, secret pill mills and more.
Sure, cities are more convenient for distribution and the like, but if your main priority is secrecy, the boonies is where it's at.
When your next door neighbors are a mile away, you'd have the be very nosy to notice much of what they do.

Big rural conservative paranoia energy 🙄
My first time in New York, I accidentally got off the airport bus a couple of stops too early and walked through the infamous Jamaica, Queens neighborhood. In the middle of the night with all my luggage clearly labeling me a tourist.
I didn't get mugged or stabbed. Other than one guy politely hitting me up for a cigarette and then equally politely taking his leave, I was left alone entirely.
It's never happened to me.
See, THAT I do believe.

Palantir’s Military Role in Israel and Britain
Palantir’s AI machines need data for fuel—data in the form of intelligence reports on Palestinians in the occupied territories. And for decades a key and highly secret source of that data for Israel has been the US National Security Agency, according to documents released by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. After fleeing to Hong Kong in 2013 with a pocket full of flash drives containing some of the agency’s highest secrets, Snowden ended up in Moscow where, soon after he arrived, I met with him for Wired magazine. And in the interview, he told me that “one of the biggest abuses” he saw while at the agency was how the NSA secretly provided Israel with raw, unredacted phone and e-mail communications between Palestinian Americans in the US and their relatives in the occupied territories. Snowden was concerned that as a result of sharing those private conversations with Israel, the Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank would be at great risk of being targeted for arrest or worse.”
“Now, with Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza, critical information from NSA continues to be used by Unit 8200, according to a number of sources, to target tens of thousands of Palestinians for death—often with US-supplied 2,000-pound bombs and other weapons. And it is extremely powerful data-mining software, such as that from Palantir, that helps the IDF to select targets.

Technology reshared this.
Lavender was developed by the Israel Defense Forces’ elite intelligence division, Unit 8200. One officer was quoted as saying: “This is unparalleled, in my memory. The machine did it coldly. And that made it easier.” Another said: “I would invest 20 seconds for each target at this stage, and do dozens of them every day. I had zero added-value as a human, apart from being a stamp of approval. It saved a lot of time.”Just as Palestinians are dehumanised by the rhetoric around the conflict, the technology furthers this dehumanisation. People become ‘targets’ and the technology is seen as simply a mechanism for efficiency and time-saving in the process of killing.
Technology didn't kill those people. It might make that guy sleep a little easier to pretend he's just a "stamp of approval," but thats because he's deluding himself.
If Alex Karp and Peter Thiel had created a deadly biological weapon in a lab, then sold it around the world for profit knowing it would be used to commit mass murder, nobody would be pretending they weren't responsible for those deaths their weapon caused.
They created this monster, and the U.S. helped it flourish by feeding it the data it needed. And now they're just pillaging hoards of data from the entire world. And we're just letting them. As if they have no responsibility for what they're doing, and we have no way to stop them.
They refused and still refuse to regulate it. It's not that they can't, it's because nobody forced them to. Why not? The technology isn't to blame for this, they are. They created a technological weapon of mass destruction, and for some reason, we're all just going along with the idea that what they've done is somehow different than unleashing a deadly disease on humanity. As if they're somehow removed from responsibility once it's in the buyer's hands because it's a different category of weapon.
I remember a year ago or so, I was reading about NATO and concerns over A.I. use triggering article 5. I didn't understand what tf they meant, but it's pretty obvious now. So why are we pretending these guys aren't war criminals just like the people who purchased and used their weapon against other humans?

It's scarier that this is clearly a testing ground. Gaza is too small for anything real, it doesn't really incur expenses, and it doesn't really provide profits when cleansed of people.
Also since Britain is in the title - I'd reminisce on the old picture of Russian Imperial, German Imperial, Soviet and partially even Nazi propagandist view of the world, where Britain was the center of evil aiming for, well, something like this.
It seems telling that USA, Israel, and the Commonwealth (for all military and totalitarian purposes Britain and its former dominions are still one thing) are in this together and have dropped any pretense of internationalism and rules on the world stage.
So what I think - propaganda, that's in its name, is used to propagate information. That information is augmented and simplified by those providing it, but it wouldn't have any meaning if it had zero correlation with the real world, and providing correct information is beneficial long-term for any elite, except few of them can afford to disregard short-term effects.
Perhaps that picture had something in it, or again has something in it.
See, these countries have notably interconnected and very developed intelligence services, world military logistics, propaganda means above anything openly totalitarian countries could ever hope. Totalitarian counties close up and institute censorship because you can paint a pond red, or a small river, but you can't paint the world ocean red. USA+Israel+Commonwealth can and do paint the world ocean red ; perhaps the color is paler around its remote parts.
And now they are developing and testing, on the scale of a small country, weapons that, combined with these means, can indicate that we know who will deliberately start WWIII with the goal of world domination, except it might not last long enough to be called a war.
I've also heard that British royalty still consists of types who classify people and nations by color, and those more colored in their perception have no rights at all.
And the whole constitutional monarchy and separation of dominions and independence of their puppet organizations in other (sometimes very totalitarian, I know) countries - these things can maintain structure without hard joints.
Say, when some opposition party in Georgia is technically its own thing, but receives grants, the more the better it works, that's not having a hard joint yet having a hierarchy. And, say, the glory of Saakashvili's war on corruption shouldn't be overestimated, he mostly did it through abuse. When in Armenia in the 90s Vano Siradeghyan was the internal affairs minister, its crime and corruption problems were also much less than before and after, because police would simply murder mob bosses (except for those in the government, of course). I don't know anything about Vano being pro-western or receiving grants or aiming for political power, but he used absolutely the same means the wonderful reformer Saakashvili did. OK, these are local examples.
The point is - the modern state of existence of the British Empire (in my humble opinion US has slowly receded to being part of that for many years) doesn't favor hard joints. One should look not only at grant eater groups in various countries, one should also look at many small independent states, like Arab monarchies or Baltic republics, whose foreign affairs positions have little consistency and often seem as if they were saying what the US or Britain don't want to say themselves yet.
So - getting back to weapons, we might be living in an interbellum, not for world wars, but for imperialist and anti-imperialist wars. WWI and WWII can be united into one thing in some sense, in WWI empires crumbled and socialist movements raised their heads. In WWII socialists survived and even reinforced some of their positions, but empires managed to play on both sides, and speaking about Nazis, they were very bad people, but their plans for future weren't compatible with the old concept of empires. So in some sense Nazis and USSR got played to fight each other where they shouldn't have.
So - Star Wars is often blamed for touching politics where, in the opinion of those talking, it's superficial in that. I don't think Star Wars is superficial in that, I think its EU's portrayal of that inhabited galaxy and its politics is pretty similar to our real world, just more directly exposed and has a far smaller difficulty level for the good guys. Both can be considered conventions of art.
I think we'll see the empire where it naturally won't make any sense to call it anything more specific.

I’ve also heard that British royalty still consists of types who classify people and nations by color, and those more colored in their perception have no rights at all.
The thing about this, is that it doesn't matter if it's happening in Brittain or the U.S. or Israel. It's a form of social control for elites who view the world as a social hierarchy. There are no rules for them, but they need the masses to believe there are.
They're at the top. God or nature chose for them to rule, and at the end of the day, nobody has any rights other than their right to rule over others. It just "is what it is." They love social darwinism as long as they control the game, but they also know the reality is that if the masses were to ever unite and rise up against them, they would very quickly lose their spot at the top of the hierarchy.
Creating a value system on something arbitrary like skin color is one of the easiest ways to divide and conquer. Control of the masses by tricking some of them into believing they share something inherent with those who actually dominate all of them. Skin color, nationality, religion, or political beliefs as a measure of the value of human life, lulls the subordinates into a false sense of safety by default. They can be made fully aware of atrocities happening on the other side of the world, or even next door to them, but believe their belonging to the perceived in-group means it won't happen to them.
When one out-group is eliminated, a new arbitrary out-group will be created to divide and conquer those who remain and destroy any who oppose. It's happening in the U.S. right now.
We allowed immigrants to be rounded up like animals. We rationalized children screaming and crying in fear as their families were torn apart. They weren't here "legally" so they didn't have the same legal rights as everyone else. And since we allowed a group of humans to be considered "illegal," a loss of human dignity is just accepted as the inevitable consequence of their actions. As if they somehow deserved this.
Then when we learned there were people who were here legally, but also being rounded up illegally in the rush to get all the "illegals" off the street, we accepted that it was simply a mistake, but a consequence of so many illegals with similar ethnicities overwhelming the system. A fault of the group, not a fault of the system. Nothing we needed to worry about, things would get sorted out, eventually. The system is never held to account.
Last week an entire apartment building was raided in Chicago when government agents dropped from a helicopter to a rooftop to break in. Most residents woke up to their doors kicked in around 1 am. Adults were handcuffed. Children were zip tied together and taken from their families screaming and crying. And in all the chaos and confusion, their American neighbors were also rounded up, handcuffed for hours, and denied due process. When they were finally released, they returned to find many of their friends and neighbors missing (and still unaccounted for), and many of their homes raided of valuables.
Surely this will be the line for America, right? We can all see this has nothing to do with immigration and "legal" status, right? The system is commiting the crime. They system is breaking all the rules it claims to enforce.
Or, will we all just accept that because it happened to mainly black and brown American citizens in an inner city apartment building, it was simply a mistake due to similar ethnicities overwhelming the system? It's not something you need to worry about if you're not one of them. You're safe. Surely things will get sorted out, eventually.
President Trump released a new memo a few weeks ago that very few have paid much attention to. The vague language is phrased as targeting associates and funders of radical leftist groups like "Antifa," but it's vagueness essentially equates any act of political opposition with an act of domestic terrorism.
Divide and conquer.
Divide and conquer.
I mean, yes, that's what gradual escalation doctrine means. Unfortunately that system is comprehensive, it works from the ground up this way, and any system modeled after it (which after the Cold War became most of the world) reinforces it and impedes the cure to it.
The cure would be not only many leftist ideologies, but also, for example, things like ancaps and sovcits. The problem is that all of these are so negatively perceived that even denying them voice is not seen as a problem for many people.
People think it's normal, this gradual process. That it is democracy, waiting for your enemy to do vile shit like this and then argue it "by the law", and never God forbid start first.
While the solution would be preventive rebellion, and none of popular philosophy substantiates that. Everyone thinks that's something only terrorists, bad-bad fascists and bad-bad bolsheviks do. With plenty of history to support that viewpoint, of course, except millions of dead under colonial rule in Africa and from British blockades even in the two world wars were killed by neither bolsheviks nor fascists.
Getting back to the system, I mean culture of social interactions by that, which is beneficial for them in most of the world. As a reaction to other transgressions, maybe, but that doesn't change the fact.

White House says furloughed federal workers not entitled to back pay amid shutdown
You have got to be fucking kidding me.
The White House’s office of management and budget (OMB) is arguing that federal workers who are furloughed amid the ongoing government shutdown are not entitled to back pay.In a draft memo first obtained by Axios, OMB argued that an amendment to the Government Employee Fair Treatment Act (GEFTA) of 2019 would not guarantee furloughed workers back pay and that said funds must be set aside by Congress.
“The legislation that ends the current lapse in appropriations must include express language appropriating funds for back pay for furloughed employees, or such payments cannot be made,” said Mark Paoletta, OMB’s general counsel, in a draft addressed to White House budget director Russell Vought, the Washington Post reported.
The OMB previously revised a shutdown guidance document on Friday to remove reference to the GEFTA Act, reported Government Executive, a media site reporting on the US executive branch.
Donald Trump previously signed GEFTA into law after the 2019 government shutdown, which lasted for 35 days. While many understood the law to automatically guarantee pay for federal workers, the White House’s OMB is arguing against that interpretation, suggesting that the law only created the conditions for back pay.

Android/Phone Alternatives? [Discussion]
With the advent of Google's draconian business decisions, do we have alternatives?
The entire reason I use an android phone is that it's just like a little computer where I can decide how it's used. I was wondering if anyone is familiar with other options.
I remember the PSP with its 3g modem that was a fun novelty. Are there any modern devices like the OpenPandora that could be suitable?
Most of my paid apps are through alternative markets so I'm fairly sure with some effort I could get them running on a Linux device.
I thought about using a laptop but it wouldn't have the same convenience to answer calls asap from my pocket. I'm also unsure if it's possible to use tools like Google maps to navigate.
My apologies if this isn't the appropriate community. I'm hoping that because this likely affects everyone here it's the right place for this discussion. Thanks for reaching the end 💜

OpenAI signs $1 trillion worth of chip deals to feed its AI habit
These numbers don't make any sense to me, as the hed is about buying lots of chips, and the body is about power use. No matter how you slice it, $8.76/kWh is a terrible fucking investment ... if that's chip-inclusive, that's another story.
Still, the audacity of saying "we're going to invest $1 trillion" is Dr. Evil-level humour.
OpenAI is signing about $1 trillion (€940 billion) in deals this year for computing power to keep its artificial intelligence dreams humming. On Monday the outfit inked a deal with AMD which follows earlier tie-ups with Nvidia, Oracle and CoreWeave, as Sam Altman’s outfit scrambles to secure enough silicon to keep ChatGPT online and the hype machine alive.
The latest commitments would give OpenAI access to more than 20 gigawatts of computing capacity over the next decade, roughly the output of 20 nuclear reactors. At about $50 billion per gigawatt, according to OpenAI’s estimates, the total tab hits that $1 trillion figure.
Analysts are not convinced this financial engineering makes any sense. DA Davidson analyst Gil Luria said: “OpenAI is in no position to make any of these commitments,” adding that it could lose about $10 billion this year.

Synagogue attacks directly benefit Israel. It makes Jews afraid to live outside of Israel and encourages them to become settlers, it's used by Zionist-aligned governments to crack down on all opposition to Israel, and it creates martyrs when people get killed.

Because yes, I agree that this will result in a counterproductive backlash to my own desire to see the end of the genocide in Gaza.
But because of that genocide, and Israel's 's full-throated efforts to remove any separation between Zionism and Judaism, I find myself with a lack of
emotional energy available to care about the in-group perpetrating that genocide.
That is very different from celebrating this attack.

Not that I supported killing them, or that I endorsed this attack, but that it's hard for me expend emotional energy caring about an in-group actively engaged in a genocide.
I also went out of my way to explain how Israel's role in conflating Judaism with Zionism is a key reason why I feel that way.
And let me be clear: this attack was wrong and it is 100% counterproductive to bringing an end to the genocide.
I do not support or condone this violence, but I will not be guilted into having a different emotional response just because others find it more acceptable
And while I strongly feel that my own background should have no bearing on the conversation, I will point out that I was raised in a Jewish Zionist household. So please don't tell me how I'm a self-hating Jew, anti-semitic, or otherwise racially prejudiced against myself.
With all of that out of the way, let's take a closer look at the target of this attack:
Rabbi Daniel Walker serves as co-chair of the community and interfaith committees of the JRC and has been the Rabbi of the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation since 2008.
How does Rabbi Walkers JRC organization view the conflict? Would it shock to learn that oppose Palistinain self-determination, and do not consider the conflict to be a genocide?
This is an Orthodox Zionist organization helmed by an yeshiva educated conservatives. They are explicitly against Palestinian self-determination and who don't express an ounce of sympathy or concern for the Palestinians being slaughtered.
For a final time, this attack was wrong. Violence is wrong. This should not be supported, celebrated, or sanctified.
But please don't censor people who are expressing valid feelings about how they emotionally process attacks against organizations of unashamedly racial supremacists, who are actively part of the in group currently perpetrating a genocide.
This is also relevant discussion to this topic because it speaks to a larger issue facing the Jewish community and public sentiment and opinions that are only getting worse, whether they express themselves through inexcusable violence like today, or by people having tragically apathetic emotional responses to violence.
