4x6 thermal label printers on linux
Does anyone have 4x6 thermal label printers working on Linux?
I have tried several thermal printers, zebra and off brands, none of them work on Linux, also tried arch, mint, manjaro, Ubuntu, and a few others.
Printers all detect and install, but never prints. I messed with CUPS settings, didnt help. I also tried LPrint. Didnt work. Nothing comes out any of the label printers. Not even the sample test labels.
Been using Linux for about 2 years full time. I only have windows to print shipping labels.
I HATE using windows 10 and refuse to use 11. Now with no updates it’s the last thing I need to replace.

Just a questions, are such thermal printers useful for home users? I find them quite interesting since they are fast. They could make sense if one just wants to print a tiny snippet of information like a shopping list, a street adress, or a password, and one does not want to fire up a laser printer and print a whole A4 page.
(Thinking about that, passwords are an interesting use case... often a paper copy makes sense and the copy needs to match exactly.)

[Jacobin] Citizenship by Algorithm: Narendra Modi transformed India’s biometric ID system from a tool for promoting social welfare into a mechanism of mass surveillance and disenfranchisement.
Archive link in case anyone hits a paywall.
This article is from September, but it is good, and in light of other recent efforts by the Indian government at mass surveillance of their population, I think it is worth a read.
A system like Aadhaar is a great way for governments to sneak in a platform of surveillance and control under the guise of welfare and could serve as a model for other governments seeking to supercharge their own surveillance efforts.

Building a package manager is kind of a large project, so I'd recommend trying to build some smaller applications in C# first. That will help you set up your development environment and get a better grasp on the language and ecosystem.
Once you've got an okay understanding of the language, I think a package manager would be a great project to learn with (especially if it's something you're interested in)!
- do I invent my own pkg format or do I use pre built packages like deb or rpm? I think the later one will be more easier
Whether you build your own package format or use one from another manager is up to you. If you want to learn how a specific package manager works, consider integrating with their package format. If you want to design a full system, consider designing your own (and maybe take inspiration from some existing solutions). I wouldn't say that using an existing format would be strictly easier, as those formats are specially designed and can often be very complicated.
- where should I start?
This is a tricky question for any application. I'd highly recommend spending a little bit of time to determine roughly what steps will need to be done for each stage of package management (i.e., creating a package, publishing a package, installing a package). Since you're just doing this to learn, it's okay if it's not perfect or if there are portions that are missed, it's just important to get some thoughts out. When you actually start writing code, you'll probably want to focus on the more fundamental aspects that block the other stages (implement package creation before implementing installation)

whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uplo…Lots of interesting things here, but here are a few key points:
- They are explicit about reviving the Monroe doctrine, specifically saying they need to readjust their military specifically to "address urgent threats" in the Americas
- A push to make their ~~vassals~~ allies build up their own military, saying "The days of the United States propping up the entire world order like Atlas are over" (kinda self aggrandizing but okay)
- There's a lot focusing on countering China, but around 80% is talking about economic and industrial stuff, there's surprisingly little about military, mostly saying that they need Japan and the ROK to step up, and also that they "[do] not support any unilateral change to the status quo in the Taiwan Strait." (which implies they wouldn't want Taiwan to declare independence either)
- Saying that Europe's undergoing "civilizational erasure", talks about immigration and free speech, and aiming towards "Cultivating resistance to Europe’s current trajectory within European nations" (sounds kind of like regime change?), and "Ending the perception, and preventing the reality, of NATO as a perpetually expanding alliance"
- The Middle East section is basically glazing Trump's peacemaking skills, declaring that the US can step away because the region is stable now (not sure what to say about that)
- They want to pursue more trade and investment with Africa, also something about countering "Islamic terrorist activity"

After Years of Controversy, the EU’s Chat Control Nears Its Final Hurdle: What to Know
Cross posted from: feddit.uk/post/40600495
After a years-long battle, the European Commission’s “Chat Control” plan, which would mandate mass scanning and other encryption-breaking measures, at last codifies agreement on a position within the Council of the EU, representing EU States. The good news is that the most controversial part, the forced requirement to scan encrypted messages, is out. The bad news is there’s more to it than that.
Chat Control has gone through several iterations since it was first introduced, with the EU Parliament backing a position that protects fundamental rights, while the Council of the EU spent many months pursuing an intrusive law-enforcement-focused approach. Many proposals earlier this year required the scanning and detection of illicit content on all services, including private messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Signal. This requirement would fundamentally break end-to-end encryption.
Thanks to the tireless efforts of digital rights groups, including European Digital Rights (EDRi), we won a significant improvement: the Council agreed on its position, which removed the requirement that forces providers to scan messages on their services. It also comes with strong language to protect encryption, which is good news for users.

The truth is, the fascists will always relentlessly find another crevice to stick their dirty hands into. A compromise with fascists isn't a win - it's a defeat with extra steps. Their so called "risk mitigation" is essentially another way in achieving the exact same thing from another angle.
That being said; the war continues. And while it is good that we avoided this policy - we'll never actually win until we change something.

Israel remains in Eurovision
Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands and Slovenia will boycott next year's Eurovision Song Contest, after Israel was allowed to compete.
They were among a number of countries who had called for Israel to be excluded over the humanitarian toll of the war in Gaza, and accusations of unfair voting practices.
Despite calls for a vote on Israel's participation, members instead approved a new set of rules intended to protect the integrity of the contest.
Ireland's national broadcaster RTE said it felt that its "participation remains unconscionable given the appalling loss of lives in Gaza and the humanitarian crisis there which continues to put the lives of so many civilians at risk."
In a statement, Dutch broadcaster Avrotros said that "participation under the current circumstances is incompatible with the public values that are essential to us".
Spanish broadcaster RTVE added: "The board of directors of RTVE agreed last September that Spain would withdraw from Eurovision if Israel was part of it."
"This withdrawal also means that RTVE will not broadcast the Eurovision 2026 final... nor the preliminary semi-finals."

What are your favourite songs discovered this year?
Spotify Wrapped is on the streets now, but rather than everyone saying what a cold algorithm told them their favourite songs were this year, I'd like to hear what actual people actually think.
So what are your favourite musical discoveries this year? Whether those were brand new songs from 2025, older songs that you only heard for the first time this year, or even songs you re-discovered after years of not hearing them.
Here’s some of mine, in the format of a goofy award show:
Favourite New Song From This Year
- Maybe technically cheating because the band has apparently been playing this song live since at least 2023, but the studio version is from this year.
Favourite New Song Actually From This Year
the thoughts that keep me up at night by Marhly - This one makes me feel old, mostly because the artist is that much younger than me. But there’s something about the anxious lyrics that felt very 2025.
Favourite New Song That Really Made Me Feel Old
- Speaking of artists that are way, way younger than me, we have this song. I’m not sure about the warbly vocals in some places, but it’s upbeat and optimistic (like its says on the tin).
Favourite New Song That Made Me Feel Young
Well, Whatever it Was by Joyce Manor - This song feels like it could have come out when I was in high school, but rather than make me feel my age, it put a spring in my step. I didn’t actually listen to much music back then, so maybe I’ve misestimated my musical eras, but I can’t really shake the feeling.
Favourite New Song by a Band That I Saw Live
- Granted, I only went to one concert this year, but still counts, right? I’m not a huge OLP fan, mostly knowing their songs by osmosis, but hearing this song for the first time made me buy a ticket. It was kind of a rebound concert as I had to miss seeing my favourite band on their farewell tour, but I still enjoyed myself, even if they didn’t play this particular song.
Favourite Rediscovered Song
Tornado of Souls by Megadeth - I used to listen to Rust In Peace quite a bit when I was younger, but I kind forgot about it (and most other metal) for the better part of a decade until a new Megadeth song hit my recommendations. That caused me to go back and listen, and reawaken by appreciation for this song.
Favourite Song Discovered Through Weird Coincidence
- This one randomly came up in my wife’s playlist. Neither of us had heard of the band before, but I figure it had something to do with the Ghost songs that we both like.
Favourite New Cover
Folsom Prison Blues by Sawyer Hill - A heavier take on a Johnny Cash song, my first thought when I heard this was, “Boy, they don’t make them like this any more.” Sawyer Hill has an interesting voice, baritone like Cash but more gravelly. Speaking of which…
Favourite New Song That I Liked Purely for a Single Element
- Do I actually like this song? Is this actually a good song? I don't know, but Mr. Hill has a really interesting voice, so I’m willing to forgive some lyrics that feel a bit too cute. I do understand if his voice drives people away, though; what I’ve gathered is that some people really cannot stand it.
Favourite New Song With the Hardest Hitting Lyric
Troubadour Moon by The Wildhearts - “It’s a bitch when you find out you’re just an ordinary man.” Oof.
Favourite New Song That Really Has Me Hoping the Artist Isn’t Problematic
- I kid (mostly), but it is southern rock. I haven’t found anything problematic about Ms. Fish, thankfully, but I also haven’t dug too far.
Favourite New Song Discovered Through Lemmyvision
Band LIke That by fanclubwallet - I submitted a bunch of songs for my country’s entry in Lemmyvision. None of them got many votes, but I did discover this one submitted by someone else.

A New Anonymous Phone Carrier Lets You Sign Up With Nothing but a Zip Code
Nicholas Merrill received a hand delivered National Security Letter from the FBI in 2004, ordering him to give up data on one of his customers.
Merrill opened it and read the letter while the agent waited. The first and second paragraphs told him he was hereby ordered to hand over virtually all information he possessed for one of his customers, identified by their email address, explaining that this demand was authorized by a law he’d later learn was part of the Patriot Act.
The third paragraph informed him he couldn’t tell anyone he’d even received this letter—a gag order.
He then fought a landmark, decade-plus legal battle against the FBI and the Department of Justice. As the owner of an internet service provider in the post-9/11 era, Merrill had received a secret order from the bureau to hand over data on a particular user—and he refused. He refused and won.
After that, he spent another 15 years building and managing the Calyx Institute, a nonprofit that offers privacy tools like a snooping-resistant version of Android and a free VPN that collects no logs of its users’ activities.
Now the completely anonymous phone service. The full article is worth the read.
