Questions about an existing SIM card in GrapheneOS

Hi all!

Newbie here on a privacy journey. My current objective is to create a cute little phone that limits tracking by surveillance capitalists, law enforcement, & the state.

That said, the stakes are not particularly high here. I just miss the world I grew up in & find the call of freedom enticing. So this is more of a hobby project for me to be able to put my main phone down and experience a world without tracking again.

So far I have installed GrapheneOS on my old phone. I'm absolutely in love with it and I'm 100% sold on one day even migrating my main phone to it. But thats not my main concern today.

For now, I have some questions related to SIM cards.

I understand that in order to avoid device number leaks (if that's something one cares about) it's important to not have a SIM card in the device and keep it on airplane mode.

However, years before privacy ever mattered to me I already had a SIM card and two eSIMs in this phone. And all of the advice I read talks about NEVER putting a SIM card in, but I have a hard time thinking critically about what that really means for those of us who ALREADY had one in.

If I remove that SIM card and eSIM and carry on using the phone, what are the privacy implications of such a choice?

Likewise, if I leave the SIM cards in but keep the phone on airplane mode is it really all that bad?

I assume at minimum this means that the IMEI number is stored somewhere in some cell tower logs. If the state were to seize my phone they could I suppose link the phone to things I did with my phone or accounts I used back before privacy mattered to me.

But are there other implications as well? Is this phone forever going to leak a connection to my old activity even if I remove the SIM cards, leave it on airplane mode, use a VPN and ensure it never falls into bad hands?

Thanks!

Thanks! There really isn't any reason for me to be targeted so I think I'm fine personally. Privacy is a collective value though, so I wish to maximize it as an expression of my values.

alpine linux bootlog for nanopi r4s failed boot - Pastebin.com

I have been banging my head against the desk over this. I can use u-boot on the SD card to boot alpine off a flash drive. I cannot get the entire thing running off SD card though. It keeps doing this. What am I missing?
in reply to muusemuuse

The other option here seems to be using uboot to boot your SD card: docs.u-boot.org/en/latest/usag…

Since you know you can boot it via USB, you can just tell it to then boot from your SD Card instead of relying on the r4s to boot it. Docs say it's possible to flash to the eMMC as well wiki.friendlyelec.com/wiki/ind…

in reply to just_another_person

u-boot loads off the SD card because there is nowhere else to put it on this board. I want to put alpine there too. Alpine and u-boot can be on the same card but alpine wont finish loading unless it is being loaded from the USB port.

France hands anti-racism award to media stars accused of racism

France has awarded a top human rights prize to two broadcasters who have been accused of anti-Muslim racism and discrediting critics of Israel by labelling them as antisemites.

Sophia Aram and Jacques Essebag, who is better known by his stage name "Arthur", received the Jean Pierre-Bloch Prize from President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee Palace on Wednesday.

In recent years, Aram has increasingly hit back at "woke" and branded leftists and pro-Palestinian campaigners as antisemites or Hamas supporters.

Wild reading this from Business Insider of all places:

This ideology ultimately led to the financialization of the US corporation — the process of putting shareholders first […] — and its emergence as an actor that takes resources from the economy rather than creating them. This, combined with a government zeal for lowering taxes rather than spending, means no one… is investing enough in America to keep the economy strong across social classes

Do alternative frontends for twitch exist (like pstube/freetube/piped for YT)?

Do you recommend some or know how to find out?
To be more privacy-friendly ofc

EDIT: -possibly working with addons like ublock (vern cc has ad breaks) and emote support (so chat isnt a cryptic jungle)

-Primarily on desktop, but additional app welcome

-Possibly not even communicating with Amazon (like for YT for example only psTube does to my understanding)

QUESTION:
Could it possibly work to still participate in the chats (like i imagine a throwaway account for example) or does that break the whole concept of privacy? How does that work exactly.

3V at 100 microwatts significantly limits its usefulness.

They say they're planning to make a 1W version, which I assume will be either be much larger or have a much shorter lifespan. How does it work? Does it have a way to stop the reaction or does the 1W battery generate 1W of heat when there's no load attached?

in reply to i_am_not_a_robot

I think for embedded iot type apps it could be great, pair it with some caps for peak loads (read/transmit).
in reply to BlueÆther

Some microprocessors in deep sleep mode can consume less than 100 microwatts, so I guess it could be possible with this version, but you'd need to charge for a long time. The power consumption of an active ESP32 can reach 700,000 microwatts.
in reply to i_am_not_a_robot

I have some environment monitoring units that run on cr32 that last around 12 months (not ESP's ;) )
in reply to i_am_not_a_robot

I agree that's low. claim of 3300mWh per gram, also has decay over 50 years. 100 microwatts over 24 hours is 2.4mWh. 600 microW solar for 4 hours is the same. 1 cm^2^ solar is 25mW, and so more daily power with just 6 minutes of sun per day.

Why Trump's tariff chaos actually makes sense (big picture)

Before you downvote this post, the title is in fact the title of the Youtube video verbatim.

The man has an interesting theory for why Trump is creating this much chaos and disruption. It even kind of makes sense.

TL;DR: Trump - or rather, his Heritage Foundation handlers, Trump is much too dumb to come up with this on his own - wants to blow up the neoliberal view of the world and come back to a sort of Bretton-Woods world without the gold standard.

If that's the long-term plan, I might almost understand it, were it not for one critical factor: all this assumes that the ultimate bargaining power for the US is access to the US market - which currently is the largest in the world. But this assumes the cretinous tariffs don't kill it completely by creating another great depression - and that's a big assumption.

Anyhow, worth a watch.

On Friday March 21, eight israeli human rights organizations* published a call in Haaretz daily newspaper to oppose the Israeli government’s policy
(original as attached).

English translation from B’Tselem:

No to the Israeli government’s policy of death

Tens of thousands killed, entire cities destroyed, millions of people starving, hostages abandoned to suffering and death — all this has not satisfied the bloodlust and urge for destruction of Netanyahu and Ben Gvir’s government.

For the sake of political survival, and in the name of its all-out war on the Palestinian people, the Israeli government is willing to continue committing the gravest of crimes.

This is what a dictatorship looks like: a leader willing to trade in human lives for his own personal interests.

Now is the time to say loudly and clearly: we will not follow him into the abyss.

We must oppose the death policy led by the Netanyahu–Ben Gvir government.

‘Perfect storm.’ Hundreds of South Florida condos now on secret mortgage blacklist

A secretive quasi-governmental condo blacklist is growing exponentially, making it difficult for owners in scores of troubled buildings in Miami and South Florida to sell or get loans for repairs even as their associations face a fiscal and time crunch to meet stringent new state safety regulations.

The number of local condos on the list, which is maintained by federally chartered mortgage finance corporation Fannie Mae, has more than doubled in the past two years, according to new data released by a law firm that has been tracking it.

The total number of condos on the confidential database in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties sits at 696 as of March, the data from Allcock Marcus, which obtained it from a confidential source, shows. That’s nearly half the 1,438 condos that Fannie Mae lists as ineligible for its backing in all of Florida.

Trump's new tariffs spark fresh fears for Americans nearing the finish line

Summary

Trump's new tariffs, unveiled on "Liberation Day," have ignited economic fears among soon-to-be retirees, who worry about stock losses, Social Security stability, and inflation.

Experts warn that higher tariffs—like a 25% levy on auto imports—could worsen market volatility and trigger stagflation.

Goldman Sachs projects further S&P 500 declines, while Yardeni Research raised recession odds. Financial advisers urge retirees to keep diverse portfolios with 30–50% equities.

Part of the Doge, we talked about this from the beginning, is we’re going to do 80% cuts, but 20% of those are going to have to be reinstated, because we’ll make mistakes.”

‘Oligarchy’: Trump exempts big oil donors from tariffs package

The sweeping package of tariffs unveiled by Donald Trump on Wednesday includes an exemption for the energy sector, which is a clear sign of the president’s fealty to his big oil donors over the American people, advocates say.

Trump’s new 10% universal tariffs – which are higher for many major economies – are wreaking havoc on the global economy and are expected to increase consumer prices in the US. But the levies will not apply to many fossil fuel products, including liquefied natural gas imports, crude oil from Canada, and materials needed for making petrochemicals.

Daughter of Ottoman princess: How I rejected CIA attempt to make me a spy

Mourad explains that she was an "ultra-leftist" journalist in 1973, the year the CIA approached her. "We were very anti-American because of Vietnam, because of Cuba. Che Guevara was our hero."She was struggling to have her articles published, partly because editors complained that she didn't present the American viewpoint.

"My English boyfriend, who I thought was a journalist, told me he could put me in touch with someone in the American embassy."Mourad agreed and they had lunch with a "gentleman, who was like an old uncle and was very nice". The diplomat invited her to have coffee the next week, and they spoke some more.

As she would soon realise, that was exactly what was happening. The diplomat revealed he secretly worked for the CIA and asked her to join the agency. "While he was talking," Mourad remembers, "I was imagining a fantastic article on how the CIA tried to recruit a left-wing journalist."

She pretended to accept the offer, planning to go along with the process and then write a sensational story about it. "I thought this would impress my editors - I was ambitious, maybe reckless."

A journalist friend warned Mourad that the idea was risky and that the CIA could take revenge. "I became frightened," she recalls. "I worried they would think I tried to cheat them, so a week later I wrote to them saying I had reconsidered. That was maybe a mistake because it left a trace, but I had no courage to confront the man."

One CIA memo quoted in the Sunday Times investigation records that "operational approval was cancelled in April 1979", years later. Mourad says she finds it bewildering. "It could be a bureaucratic mistake, or maybe they didn't want to admit they had failed in their attempt. "There was one week when I thought I could cheat the CIA."

Wealthy Americans have death rates on par with poor Europeans

The study looked at health and wealth data of more than 73,000 adults across the US and Europe who were 50 to 85 years old in 2010. There were more than 19,000 from the US, nearly 27,000 from Northern and Western Europe, nearly 19,000 from Eastern Europe, and nearly 9,000 from Southern Europe. For each region, participants were divided into wealth quartiles, with the first being the poorest and the fourth being the richest. The researchers then followed participants until 2022, tracking deaths.

While less access to health care and weaker social structures can explain the gap between the wealthy and poor in the US, it doesn't explain the differences between the wealthy in the US and the wealthy in Europe, the researchers note. There may be other systemic factors at play that make Americans uniquely short-lived, such as diet, environment, behaviors, and cultural and social differences.

"If we want to improve health in the US, we need to better understand the underlying factors that contribute to these differences—particularly amongst similar socioeconomic groups—and why they translate to different health outcomes across nations," Papanicolas said.

World on warcraft on Linux

Hello everybody!
I want to escape Microsoft and windows, and I am looking for a Linux distro. I have some experience with Unix and a very old Ubuntu distro. But that's quite some years ago. I am looking for a Linux distribution where i can play World of Warcraft on. I mainly use Nvidia graphics (RTX 3070).

I have found some distributions that are supposed to be good for gaming. I suppose, as i am still a Linux Noob, I am also looking for a distribution which is easy to get into. Especially for an older gamer ;)

I came with these distro's myself. What does the Linux community say?

in reply to Lanske

I personally wouldn’t look for a distro made just for gaming. I’m currently using Fedora 41 on my PCs and I’ve just closed Red Dead Redemption 2 a few minutes ago, also played baldurs gate and resident evil 4.

Fedora works great for me using it for everything

Unsanitary Practices Persist at Baby Formula Factory, Workers Say-The new head of the FDA division that oversees baby formula is a corporate lawyer who previously defended Abbott against a lawsuit.

Current and former employees told ProPublica that they have seen the plant in Sturgis, Michigan, take shortcuts when cleaning manufacturing equipment and testing for microbes. The employees said leaks in the factory are sometimes not fixed, a dangerous problem that can promote bacterial growth. They also said workers at the facility do not always take required swabs to check for pathogens while performing maintenance during production. Supervisors have urged workers to increase production and have retaliated against workers who complained about problems, the employees said.

One worker complained to the Food and Drug Administration in February, saying the plant has experienced “persistent leaks” and “unaddressed contamination issues,” according to correspondence between the worker and the agency viewed by ProPublica. Water and chemicals have pooled on the floor, the worker said. In one spot, white sweetener oozed from a pipe and formed a pile like a stalagmite on top of a tank used for blending, the employee said.

The complaints come as the Trump administration is dismantling wide swaths of the federal government — including conducting mass layoffs at the FDA — and filling some key regulatory positions with industry-friendly voices. The new head of the FDA division that oversees baby formula is a corporate lawyer who previously defended Abbott against a lawsuit.

"In fact, not only does the market assessment of the value of different forms of work not correspond to popular conceptions of what they actually contribute to society, but there actually seems to be an inverse relation: with few exceptions, the principle seems to be, the more one's work is seen as socially useful, the more it is recognized as helping others, the less one is likely to be paid for it."

Is this a good deal for the Legend tier?

cross-posted from: reddthat.com/post/38409619

Tuta is having a birthday sale, putting their highest Legend tier at the same price as their second-highest Revolutionary tier, and I'm wondering two things:
* Is this a good deal for 36€ per year?
* Is this a deal that comes around every year, or is this a rare sale?

I use addy.io to manage aliases, so the extra addresses are whatever. The custom domains might be nice, since I could potentially(?) use that with Addy. I've been pretty judicious with my free 1GB of space, but having 500GB would be more than comfortable (besides being overkill).

I'm not really interested in getting into self-hosting right now, but I might in the future, so I'm also curious how y'all who self-host email feel about a deal like this. Comparable to the cost of self-hosting? Similar features?

Thanks!

in reply to Telorand

I wouldn't honestly pay for an email service that does not allow for PGP encryption. Go for mailbox.org or posteo for true standard-respecting emails.
in reply to unknowing8343

A very good point. I haven't handed out the Tuta address, and everything goes through Addy first, so moving would be easy.
in reply to unknowing8343

I've always found I never end up using PGP, being that all parties need to have it configured and in my experience very very few do. Do you find you use it that often?
in reply to parmesancrabs

True, it is simple to use but no one who is a normie will ever use it. I have offered to help but if it is not in their workflow they won't even try if they do not care about privacy. Which few do.
in reply to Telorand

I think that offer ends today, so you'll need to be quick! One ting to note that if you want to import emails, right now, you need the Legend tier so now is a good time to get it if that's of value to you.

China retaliates against Trump in trade war with 34% tariffs on US imports

Fears of global recession rise as stock markets continue to fall after China responds to US president’s ‘bullying tactics’

Stock markets around the world plunged for a second day on Friday as China announced retaliatory tariffs of 34% on US imports, signalling a major escalation of a trade war ignited by Donald Trump and feeding fears of a global recession.

“For all imported goods originating from the US, an additional tariff of 34% on top of the current applicable tariff rate will be imposed,” Beijing’s finance ministry said.

China’s commerce ministry said that it would also impose more restrictions on the export of rare earths which are used in high-tech manufacturing such as batteries and electric vehicles. It added a further 16 US companies and organisations to its export control list, meaning that Chinese companies are restricted from doing business with them.

China had previously promised “resolute countermeasures” against Trump’s tariffs, which slapped a 10% rate on all imports coming to the US, with extra levies for certain countries, including China.

Wang Wen, the dean of Renmin University of China’s Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies, said: “China will never give in to Trump, but it does not exclude co-operation with the United States at the level of mutual respect and win-win co-operation. China knows that co-operation is not sought, but fought for.” Wang said that China’s response was “restrained” and limited to trade measures.

However other analysts said that China’s response was forceful.

Stephane Ekolo, a market and equity strategist for Tradition in London, told Reuters: “China comes out swinging with an aggressive response to Trump’s tariffs. This is significant and is unlikely to be over, hence the negative market reactions. Investors are afraid of a ‘tit for tat’ trade war situation.”

Around 60% of duty-free packages coming into the US come from China. But those deliveries will, from May, be subject to a fee of 30% of the value of the goods, or $25, rising to $50 in June.

China has also filed a lawsuit against the US with the World Trade Organisation.

What were actual Chinese tariffs on US imports like, prior to this?

Because Trump's little chart said they were almost 70%. A number that feels spiritually true, given how China is actively developing its domestic industrial capacity, but is probably false because they apparently made that chart with an AI slop machine.

  •  Il Monferrato Doc Nebbiolo Superiore San Goslino 2020: vino nato nel 2011, ne vengono prodotte circa 4000 bottiglie l’anno, risulta gradevolmente speziato (affinato in grandi botte di rovere francese);

In alto i calici!
