Red Crescent releases video showing Israeli murder of first responders
cross-posted from: hexbear.net/post/4525978
The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) has published mobile phone footage taken by a slain Palestinian paramedic refuting Israel's account of why its soldiers opened fire on a convoy of ambulances and a fire truck on 23 March, killing 15 rescue workers.. The video shows the vehicles moving in the dark with their headlights and emergency flashing lights switched on. Israeli forces then opened fire on the vehicles for several minutes.
The Israeli military initially denied the vehicles had their headlights or emergency signals on when its forces opened fire on them.
At least two emergency workers can be seen stepping out of the vehicles wearing reflective clothing. The rescuer filming the video with his phone is heard reciting Islamic prayers before being killed.
One rescuer can be heard in the video saying, "Forgive me, mother. I just wanted to help people. I wanted to save lives."
During the attack, Israeli forces killed eight PRCS paramedics, six Gaza Civil Defense workers, and one UN employee. Israeli troops buried their bodies, and the destroyed vehicles in a shallow mass grave dug in the sand.

Trump Has Already Botched His Own Bad Tariff Plan
Donald Trump had a plan. It was not a good plan, or even a plausible one. But it was, at least, a coherent plan: By imposing large trade barriers on the entire world, he would create an incentive for American business to manufacture and grow all the goods the country previously imported.
Whatever chance this plan had to succeed is already over.
The key to making it work was to convince businesses that the new arrangement is durable. Nobody is going to invest in building new factories in the United States to create goods that until last week could be imported more cheaply unless they’re certain that the tariffs making the domestic version more competitive will stay in place. (They’re probably not going to do it anyway, in part because they don’t know who will be president in four years, but the point is that confidence in durable tariffs is a necessary condition.)
But not everybody got the idea. Eric Trump tweeted, “I wouldn’t want to be the last country that tries to negotiate a trade deal with @realDonaldTrump. The first to negotiate will win - the last will absolutely lose.”
Eric’s father apparently didn’t get the memo either. Asked by reporters whether he planned to negotiate the tariff rates, the president said, “The tariffs give us great power to negotiate. They always have.”
Someone seems to have then told Trump that this stance would paralyze business investment, because he reversed course immediately, writing on Truth Social, “TO THE MANY INVESTORS COMING INTO THE UNITED STATES AND INVESTING MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF MONEY, MY POLICIES WILL NEVER CHANGE.”
However, there is a principle at work here called “No backsies.” Once you’ve said you might negotiate the tariffs, nobody is going to believe you when you change your mind and say you’ll never negotiate.

Well hey if the trumps became a dynasty, the US becomes a de facto Russian colony.
I bet he's cool with that.
Then we would actually become second place in his eyes instead of a nation with a bullet hole on his map.
Even writing this makes me wanna gag, this is a horrid little hypothetical I've thought of. Someone, somewhere, is hoping this will occur, though.

Trump’s Border Czar Faces Backlash in His Hometown for Locking Up a Local Family
“Border czar” Tom Homan is facing a backlash in his own hometown of Sackets Harbor, New York, after an immigration raid swept up a mother and her three school-aged children.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection took the family and three others into custody on March 27 in an early-morning raid on a dairy farm in Sackets Harbor, a small hamlet on the shores of Lake Ontario, on the western edge of New York’s North Country region. Within days, the mother and her children had been whisked away to Karnes County Immigration Processing Center, a privately operated Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Texas that accommodates families, according to people familiar with the family’s case.

Elon Musk says he wants a 'zero tariff situation' and a 'free trade zone' for Europe amid Trump's trade war
Summary
Elon Musk publicly broke with Trump’s new tariff policy, calling for a “zero tariff situation” and a free trade zone between the U.S. and Europe.
Speaking at an event hosted by Italy's Deputy PM Matteo Salvini, Musk also advocated freer movement of workers across the Atlantic.
His comments come days after Trump imposed sweeping tariffs, including 20% on EU goods, prompting a major stock market drop.
Trump defended the move as part of an “economic revolution.” The EU signaled readiness to negotiate but warned of retaliatory measures.

Donald Trump to skip US soldier memorial, White House confirms
Summary
Donald Trump will not attend the dignified transfer of four U.S. soldiers killed during a training exercise in Lithuania.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth will represent the administration at Dover Air Force Base. Critics noted Trump’s rare attendance at such ceremonies, citing just four appearances during his first term.
The soldiers’ remains were found in a peat bog after a March 25 accident.
Trump is instead scheduled to attend a dinner at Mar-a-Lago. Lithuania’s president honored the fallen at a repatriation ceremony, drawing contrast with Trump’s absence.

like this
4 things you can do before uninstalling #WhatsApp completely:
1- Create a folder for messaging apps on your smartphone and install at least two alternatives to WhatsApp (such as Signal, Threema, Delta, Session, etc., depending on your values, country, and where you're most likely to find your contacts). This way, if you choose Signal and a friend chooses Threema, you'll both have a better chance of finding more friends on the apps you picked based on your preferences.
2- Update your WhatsApp profile photo and status. Create an image showing the logos of the new apps where people can reach you. Write a short status message explaining that you're switching to new apps. If the new app doesn’t use your phone number as an ID, include your new ID in your avatar or status so people can easily find you.
3- Post a story on WhatsApp. Let people know you’re switching because WhatsApp is no longer safe. Invite them to try alternative apps and suggest more than one option. Share invitation links and help spread the word.
4- Turn off WhatsApp notifications and enable notifications for your new apps. Try to avoid opening WhatsApp unless it’s urgent. If you reply late on WhatsApp, let people know you’re using a different app and don't check WhatsApp as often.
New York schools tell Trump administration they won’t comply with DEI order
Summary
New York officials told the Trump administration they will not comply with its order to end diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs in public schools, rejecting threats to cut federal funding.
In a letter, state education counsel Daniel Morton-Bentley said the U.S. Department of Education lacks authority to mandate such changes or withhold funds without due process.
The administration demanded schools certify compliance with federal civil rights laws within 10 days. Critics say the order contradicts Trump’s promise to return control to states.
New York also rejected a similar federal demand over NYC transit tolls.

Edit: There were over 1200 events across every state and even some in solidarity in Europe. You know Paris wouldn’t pass up a chance to have a demonstration but there was also one in London and a few other places.
And to you, because London and France join protests against OUR sitting president, that adds credibility?
To me, that suggests these protests are filled with anti-american types. Types that just hate America and would love to see America fail completely.
Our fellow Americans are protesting Donald Trump and Elon Musk because they are violating the exact things that our country stands for. While I can't tell you the exact reasons each individual person was there, I can try my best to articulate at least some of the reasons why I was there.
I was there to stand for veterans who are scared about losing their social security benefits right now as 22 social security offices are scheduled to be closed this year. Social security is relied on by our veterans, some of whom are disabled from fighting for our country. I was there to stand for veterans who are scared of the 83,000 VA employees, some who are veterans themselves, that are slated to be fired this year by DOGE. I was there to stand for the men and women who died for our country that Trump calls "losers" and "suckers".
I was there to stand for my elders who are scared about loosing the social security that they paid into their entire lives. Money that is rightfully theirs. Money that many who are disabled depend on to stay off the streets. I was there to stand up to Elon Musk who called social security a ponzi scheme. I was there to stand for my elders who are disabled who are scared that cuts will make it difficult to get the help that they need and deserve. I was there to give my elders dignity.
I was there to stand for the children of our country and their parents who are scared of how they will put food on the table with DOGEs cuts. I was there for the children who have disabilities and depend on government programs to receive the help they rely on. I was there for the children and hard working folks who depend on government programs to keep them off the streets.
I was there to stand for Rumeysa Ozturk who's first amendment rights were violated when she was kidnapped off the streets of my country by plain clothes officers and illegally deported for exercising her rights. I was there to stand for all of the other immigrants who wish to seek a slice of the American Dream.
I was there to stand up to Donald Trump doing what amounts to a car commercial for the richest man in the world right in front of the house of my country, the White House.
I was there to stand up because despite all of these cuts and talks of more cuts, there has been no proposal for what will replace these things. No indication on what support will be provided for those who rely on it. No indication of any risk analysis, a plan, or anything of the sorts other than to give tax breaks to the wealthiest of us. Let me say that again. They are removing these government programs that help every American in order to give tax breaks to the wealthy few in order to privatize the government.
As the preamble of the constitution says "We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, ... promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity". My friend, Donald Trump and DOGE have shown to me that they do not wish for a more perfect Union. They do not promote the general Welfare. They do not secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves or our posterity. All that they have shown me time and time and time again is that they wish to destroy the very foundations on which our government was built, hurt its citizens and give tax breaks to the wealthiest of us. That is not what America stands for, my friend.

The best thing you can do for the fediverse is just be kind
The fediverse is small, and thats both a blessing and a curse - one of its several blessings is that in a smaller space we all individually have a bigger impact on what the culture of this space is like.
On this comm (and on lemmy broadly) there's a lot of discussion about how to grow the fediverse, what to improve, but an easy thing you can do for the fediverse is right in front of us-
- Be kind
- Ask people what they think, and why
- Approach folks you disagree with with curiosity rather than hostility
- Engage sincerely
- Ask yourself if there's something nice you can say
- Make this small space worth being in
A platform lives or dies by what's available on said platform and often we have this conversation in the context of "content" or posts - and we may never have as much content as reddit does. But content and posts aren't the only thing this kind of platform offers- it also offers people. It offers community, and human interaction.
Culture and community is lemmy and the fediverse's biggest differentiator, and we all have a role to play in shaping the culture of this space.
***The biggest thing you can do to help the fediverse *is make it a place worth being.****

These people configure their lives so they never have to be touched by real life. They'll just spend the day on their yacht or at a different palace. If they are in town, they'll just chopper in/out at the residence, which will be behind walls and gates a quarter mile away.
Nope, flood the streets in every major city, disrupt everything, block Federal buildings, be as inconvenient as possible. That's far more effective.
If you want to piss off a Sociopathic Oligarch, then protest at their place of business. Block their entrances, interrupt the flow of business, make it difficult to do business, inconvenience their employees, irritate their neighbors, embarrass them to their neighbors, etc.

A powerful sign against all the hatred and corruption that Trump and his henchmen stand for.
I think large demonstrations like this are incredibly important, especially nowadays, because the manipulation in social media and the traditional media can so easily give the false impression that a majority would share the inhumane ideology of this regime.
For the tens of thousands on the streets, it is obvious how many decent people there actually are.
Trump and his opinion makers can do little about this - apart from their usual ridiculous conspiracy theories around Soros and other such Bogus. Because not even these unscrupulous fascists can (yet) dare to stop thousands and thousands of people from demonstrating, or even have them all arrested.
Good luck and all the best from Europe!

Where are the strike funds to help feed people and pay their rent when they stop getting paychecks? Where are your strike captains to organize demonstration events? Where is your army of strike lawyers to defend people when they inevitably get arrested?
General strikes take a long time and a lot of resources to plan. Only then can one be effective.

I heard that the USA has been involved in illegal regime change in other countries 62 times. Sixty two times! Overthrowing quite a few democracies too. But for the US this seems unthinkable still, even for mother jones. A simple demand like the Trump administration to step down and call for new elections seems to be nowhere to be found.
PATHETIC ATTEMPT AT REVOLUTION!
vvilld
in reply to LarmyOfLone • • •This is exactly how every single popular uprising in history has started: by overwhelming numbers of people getting out in the streets to have their voices heard. They always start off as peaceful until drive past that by elite/institutional reaction.
If this were a single instance, then, yes, it would seem feeble and ineffectual. But it's not. It's the early days of a large movement. We're less than 3 months into the regime and this past Saturday was already the single largest day of protest in American history. And there's another one scheduled in 2 weeks on the 19th.
I was at the protest in DC. There was 100k+ people there. I've been a political activist since the protests against the Iraq War in 2003. This event on Saturday was notably different than any other I've attended in 2 ways. One was the sheer size, larger than any other protest in DC I've seen. The other was the demographic composition of the crowd. All previous protests I've been to were primarily filled with male-presenting young people. This was very different. At 38 years old, I was definitely younger than the majority of the people there. It was also far more racially diverse than any other events I've been to except for the 2020 uprising.
What do you expect a giant crowd of people mostly in their 40s-60s to do? You think they were all going to storm the White House or Capital?
For that matter, what are you doing? You say these demonstrations are pathetic? Then surely you must be taking more radical actions that have a much higher chance of effecting change. I'd love to join in, so, please, tell me what you're doing that's puts the 5 million people out in the streets on Saturday to shame?

If Trump steps down, Vance takes over. If Vance also steps down, it's Mike Johnson, then Chuck Grassley, Marco Rubio, and so on.

For that to change, Congress would have to establish a new presidential succession process, which they could do. However, they won't.

Any of these 1000+ protests could have used their manpower in one day to remove everyone close to Trump.
Instead we will keep marching and holding signs while everything gets worse and our corporate leaders tell us to wave the signs higher...

By the way that's a very strong tactic be terrifically Republicans to make the left look unhinged. And they're correct. It will turn a lot of people against you. Most are not violent people.

i mean, check out protests in Europe and how they're framed by their media. Even your Vietnam war protests back in the day; your media started banging on about them being drug users and layabouts to make dismissing their cause much easier.
I just think Americans have lost a lot of people power if you have to protest while walking on eggshells. Best thing to combat it is to have a conversation with everyone. Get people chatting face to face rather than having the TV spout nonsense at them.
