Thinking of the future (making sure there is no wall in front of you), letting go of regret and the past (not looking at what happened behind you). Inspirational.

The first two numbers are the year the car was ~~bought (or made?)~~ registered, as @TWeaK@lemm.ee pointed out . In this case, 2025 since the number plate starts with 25.

The numbers are the year it was registered. The car could sit on the lot for months before being registered, or the car could be made to order months+ in advance and delivered fresh from the factory and registered immediately. But the registration comes after the purchase for a new vehicle, and doesn't necessarily happen at the same time.

Either way though, he might have bought it last year or so, but that was hardly before Elon went crazy.

in reply to TWeaK

I like to point out that he's always been a fascist, people just didn't pay attention.

His dad's been in the press as a racist for decades. His maternal grandparents were part of the Technocracy conspiracy (yes, really) and fled Canada for South Africa in the 50s, and his grandmother played a role in raising him.

He's a born and raised fascist from a fascist family, he just played yall for suckers.

in reply to irelephant [he/him]🍭

Isn’t it just when the plate is registered?

If you bought a car in 2000 and registered it with a new plate today, wouldn’t it have a new plate with 25? They could have had their plate stolen and requested a new one no?

Could this be from someone who immigrated to Ireland from the US after Trump got elected again? I could see someone on the left buying a Tesla years ago for the environment's sake and deciding to flee the country after the election, with obtaining a job, immigration, etc. taking a couple of months.

I don't own a Tesla, but I'm looking to get out of the US.

Any which way they go with it would be a guess based on limited information. They're most likely going to be wrong, and if they were exactly right, we wouldn't know it.

Honestly they should probably do like 2-3 potential pictures side by side so readers are aware of the uncertainty.

Highs and lows of Five-Year Keir: The PM's journey from Doughty Street to Downing Street

I found this interesting. It looks back at Sir Keir's five years as the leader of Labour.

Here's an interesting quote:

He turned left to win the party leadership and turned right to win a general election.

And regarding his campaign for the Labour leadership in 2020:

To win the backing of left-wing Labour activists, he backed a wealth tax on the top 5% of earners, abolishing university tuition fees, nationalising water and energy and restoring freedom of movement between the UK and EU countries. Whatever happened to those promises?
in reply to SleafordMod

For all important matters, Starmer is as bought up by corporate interests as the tories.

It isn’t that to win the election he has to please voters. He mostly has to please the upper corporate class, who will use their immense media and financial power to do the rest of the work for him (ie. pleasing voters).

Unfortunately, he did that, and is little more than a corporate puppet.

What If We Made Advertising Illegal?

The idea feels like sci-fi because you're so used to it, imagining ads gone feels like asking to outlaw gravity. But humanity had been free of current forms of advertising for 99.9% of its existence. Word-of-mouth and community networks worked just fine. First-party websites and online communities would now improve on that.

The traditional argument pro-advertising—that it provides consumers with necessary information—hasn't been valid for decades.

What If We Made Advertising Illegal?

What if we made all advertising illegal? It's such a wild idea that I've never heard it in the public discourse.

Just saying it is so far outside the Overton window that it makes you sound more unhinged than wanting to nuke hurricanes (as some politicians proposed).

But why? It makes perfect sense. The financial incentives to create addictive digital content would instantly disappear, and so would the mechanisms that allow both commercial and political actors to create personalized, reality-distorting bubbles:

  • Clickbait, listicles, and affiliate marketing schemes would become worthless overnight.
  • Algorithm-driven platforms like Instagram and TikTok that harvest and monetize attention, destroying youth, would lose their economic foundation.
  • Facebook, X, Google, YouTube—all would cease to exist in their current forms.

Ad companies are never going to regulate themselves—it's like hoping for heroin dealers to write drug laws.

Think about what's happened since 2016: Populists exploit ad marketplaces, using them to bypass traditional media gatekeepers and deliver tailored messages to susceptible audiences. Foreign actors do the same, microtargeting divisive content to fracture our social fabric along existing fault lines.

Outlawing advertising would help protect and reinvigorate our minds and democracy.

Even as an advertiser (especially as an advertiser), I am convinced that outlawing advertising is the best thing we can do for our world now. More than gun control. More than tackling climate change. More than lowering the price of eggs.

Removing these advanced manipulation tools would force everyone—politicians included—to snap back into reality. By outlawing advertising, the machinery of mass delusion would lose its most addictive and toxic fuel.

Any form of paid and/or third-party advertising would become illegal. Full stop.

The idea feels like sci-fi because you're so used to it, imagining it gone feels like asking to outlaw gravity. But humanity been free of current forms of advertising for 99.9% of its existence. Word-of-mouth and community networks worked just fine. First-party websites and online communities would now improve on that.

The traditional argument pro-advertising—that it provides consumers with necessary information—hasn't been valid for decades. In our information-saturated world, ads manipulate, but they don't inform.

The modern advertising apparatus exists to bypass rational thought and trigger emotional responses that lead to purchasing decisions. A sophisticated machine designed to short-circuit your agency, normalized to the point of invisibility.

“But it's free speech!”

Bullshit. No one is entitled to yell at you “GET 20% OFF THIS UNDERWEAR YOU GLANCED AT YESTERDAY” with a dopamine megaphone in your bedroom. And to track 90% of your life to know when and how to say it. That's not free speech, that's harassment.

When I say advertising, I also mean propaganda. Propaganda is advertising for the state, and advertising is propaganda for the private. Same thing.

I know this proposal won't be implemented tomorrow. But even just stepping back from constant consumption and contemplating what poisons our democracy is a liberating act in itself. An action against that blurry, “out-of-focus fascism”—that sense of discomfort that you feel but can't quite point out (I'm preparing a longer essay about that.) In this world, any mindfulness act—stopping to think rather than reacting—represents a micro-awakening of the self.

I know, it sounds surreal. Yet, many things once thought impossible are now considered basic standards of a decent society.

I think there's a world where we'll look back on our advertising-saturated era with the same bewilderment with which we now regard cigarette smoke, child labor, or public executions: a barbaric practice that we allowed to continue far too long because we couldn't imagine an alternative.

in reply to Sundray

Imagine how much labour and money we’d free up to do actually useful things like help homeless people and disabled people etc. If we cut all those marketing and advertising departments.

It’s a whole massive industry that takes massive amounts of financial resources and human labour and doesn’t contribute to anyone’s wellbeing except the stockholders of the company.

Trump administration orders half of national forests open for logging

Access options:
* gift link

Yes, this means a ton of carbon ends up in the atmosphere instead of in the trees. The right move would be thinning and prescribed burns, but this administration isn't going to do that.

in reply to silence7

Trump is speedrunning to aim for the lowest biodiversity index in North America.

Maybe if we stop ridiculously subisidising corn everywhere, some that gets thrown away because we have way too much, we could replace a couple dozen sq km of corn fields with more sustainable agroforestry, and thereby massively increase our logging output, instead of yk, cutting down the last wildlife sanctuaries? Not holding my breath tho.

I know basically nothing about this franchise, I decided to get into it only for Bridgette, but I like what I'm seeing. It looks delightfully cheap (in a good way, like a cheesy B movie).

Sin somehow reminds me of the protagonist of D4DJ, but as a buff dude. So goofy lmao.

When did Kdenlive get so good?

Just found out about this guy on YouTube named Nuxttux because I've been trying to make some social media videos.

Kdenlive is a completely different beast than the one that I remember using a couple of years ago. It has so much functionality in it, like all the "TikTok effects", proxy clips, rendering previews, visualizing effect curves between keyframes... like damn. This is actually legit software now for my basic needs.

The thing is, it seems like these were all added in the past 2 years, because I had 23.x installed through the Debian repo and I upgraded through Flatpak to 24.12 and it seems to have added all of these?

Anyway holy shit. Go give these guys some money. This is game changing

Giving politicians money is a good idea, when you can be reasonable sure it'll be beneficial to you or society. Money is needed for elections, and if you don't give the rich will win all of them even more so

in reply to return2ozma

And that would result in... What? A bunch of do nothing Democrats? We're so fucked every which way. They can't do anything to stop him. It's all theater

Hopefully more people decide to run, rather than just hoping someone else saves them.

That's how we get progressives.

Teams is kind of awesome of what you want to do is exchange emojis and funny gifs with your co-workers. Not so much if you want to work.

I miss the days when applications were coded like applications, not like web sites. The ammount of clutter that goes behind the scenes to get a simple OK button on screen these days must be mind numbing.

American living standards are a sacrifice Trump is willing to make

Summary

Trump’s sweeping global tariffs are causing rising consumer prices, market losses, and job risks, but his administration defends them as necessary for long-term economic independence.

Critics warn the tariffs hurt low-income households dependent on cheap imports, especially from China.

Officials argue the American dream isn't about “cheap baubles,” but higher living standards. However, economists say tariffs worsen inflation and housing affordability.

Despite past GOP support for cheap goods, MAGA allies now downplay short-term pain.

in reply to MicroWave

Purchasing power in the form of cheap goods is really the only thing distracting people from the fact that we are being ripped off by the wealthy. Now that Trump has levied tariffs as a political cudgel, when the nations of the world insulate themselves from our influence, people will have no one else to blame.
in reply to Gates9

Sports and TV/movies are also there to provide that distraction. Bread and circuses.
in reply to MicroWave

It didn't work out when the Republicans tried it in 1930. Now the US is even more dependent on foreign trade, this time it will be a disaster.
