Bernie Sanders says U.S. under Trump is facing "unprecedented level of danger"

Summary

Senator Bernie Sanders warned the U.S. faces an “unprecedented level of danger” under Trump, citing the rise of oligarchy and billionaire control of politics, including Elon Musk’s growing influence.

Speaking at packed rallies, Sanders criticized both parties for enabling inequality and called America a “pseudo-democracy.”

He denounced Trump's attacks on law firms, Musk’s federal layoffs, and corporate political spending.

At 83, Sanders remains active, urging Democrats to reconnect with working-class voters and stop prioritizing wealthy donors. He sees a constitutional crisis, not just a political fight.

Trump portrait artist says career is in peril after president accuses her of distorting his likeness

Summary

Artist Sarah Boardman said her 41-year art career is at risk after Donald Trump accused her of distorting his likeness in a 2019 portrait displayed in the Colorado State Capitol.

Trump called for its removal in a March 23 Truth Social post, prompting Republican lawmakers to have it taken down the next day.

Boardman denied political bias and said the portrait was pre-approved. She reported a sharp decline in business and backlash, though her family and supporters defended her online.

Boardman had also painted Barack Obama and George W. Bush.

in reply to MicroWave

Republicans are the snowflakes and while not surprising, just absolutely pathetic and sad.

The portrait looked a shit ton better than how he looks in real life but we all know that the fragile Republican, male especially, will be hurt of the portrait isn't AI generated to artificially make him look like a comic book hero and isn't as fat and sickly looking that he actually is.

I would love to know where these Zoom protests for the disabled are being held, as a person with cancer and other maladies that often make it difficult to show up in person. This article tells me everything except where to find them!

I did a little digging and found this group:

Sadly, it's on Discord, but it's a place to organize in digital spaces for the disabled, and that's good at least.

You'd think we'd know by know that that's just how technology works - it makes us 'dumb' because we don't need to spend the effort to do things we've automated away with technology and thus can focus on shit that is more important to us. If I don't have to sit around thinking about math because someone invented a calculator, that's more time that I can spend doing the thing I want to use the math for. The math is a tool, not the point itself.

Trans student’s arrest for violating Florida bathroom law is thought to be a first

Summary

Marcy Rheintgen, a 20-year-old transgender college student, was arrested at the Florida State Capitol after intentionally entering a women’s restroom in protest of the state’s transgender bathroom law.

Civil rights lawyers say it is the first known arrest under such laws in any U.S. state.

Rheintgen faces a misdemeanor trespassing charge and could face up to 60 days in jail.

Florida is one of only two states to criminalize such acts.

Hundreds of law firms back Perkins Coie in fight against Trump sanctions

Summary:

More than 500 law firms on Friday denounced President Donald Trump’s campaign to punish individual firms, calling his actions abuses of power that endanger the rule of law.

The firms said in a court filing that Trump’s orders are potentially devastating for any firm he targets and appear intended to intimidate others so that they do not challenge his administration. The filing was not signed by any of the 20 largest firms nationwide, as measured by revenue.

“Whatever short-term advantage an administration may gain from exercising power in this way, the rule of law cannot long endure in the climate of fear that such actions create,” the group objecting to Trump’s orders wrote in the filing.

Trump has issued orders castigating several prominent law firms, citing their connections to some of his perceived foes and directing that they face significant consequences. The punishments have included losing government contracts and being blocked from federal buildings or interacting with government employees, which firms describe as catastrophic for their operations.

His orders have caused a sharp divide within the legal community, with firms and attorneys split on whether to fight.

Some firms have reached deals with the Trump administration to avoid punishment, agreeing in some cases to provide up to $100 million in pro bono work for causes the president supports. Three firms targeted by Trump — Perkins Coie, Jenner & Block and WilmerHale — instead sued to fight the orders, and federal judges at least temporarily blocked many of the penalties they faced.

The court filing submitted Friday was signed by hundreds of firms backing Perkins Coie in its lawsuit. The filing — known as an amicus, or friend of the court, brief — appeared to be a show of support from across the legal profession, with signatures from large firms with hundreds of employees as well as smaller, boutique operations. Three firms targeted by Trump — WilmerHale, Jenner & Block and Covington & Burling — were among those that signed.

“We are grateful for the support of over 500 law firms, as well as numerous other amici, in our challenge to the unconstitutional Executive Order and the threat it poses to the rule of law,” Perkins Coie said in a statement.

It was not immediately clear whether the largest firms that did not sign had all been contacted about the filing or offered a chance to sign on before it was submitted. The Washington Post contacted all 20 firms before the brief was submitted and again after it was filed. Most firms did not immediately respond to either query.

Senior partners from Keker, Van Nest & Peters publicly said days earlier that they had signed on to it and urged big firms to follow their lead.

Trump began targeting firms in February, taking aim at several that employed people who had investigated him or had other ties to his foes. He assailed Perkins Coie for representing Hillary Clinton, his opponent in the 2016 presidential race, and punished Covington & Burling for its representation of Jack Smith, the former special counsel who oversaw federal indictments against Trump.

In the brief, the firms backing Perkins Coie said Trump’s orders “seek to cow every other firm, large and small, into submission.” The firms said the orders posed a “looming threat” that any attorney or firm challenging the administration could face “the risk of devastating retaliation.” Challenging government overreach is a core part of what lawyers and law firms do, they added, something that invariably brings them into conflict with the government.

The firms also expressed “particularly acute concern” about the portions of Trump’s executive orders criticizing firms for their pro bono work, saying attorneys have to be able to advocate for all clients, “large and small, rich and poor.”

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the filing Friday.

Iran top diplomat rejects direct negotiations with US

Tehran (AFP) – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Sunday rejected direct negotiations with the United States as "meaningless", after US President Donald Trump said he would prefer direct talks with the Islamic republic.

Trump had called last month on Tehran to hold negotiations on its nuclear programme with Washington, but threatened to bomb Iran if diplomacy fails.

On Thursday, the US president said he would prefer to hold "direct talks" with Iran.

"I think it goes faster and you understand the other side a lot better than if you go through intermediaries," he argued.

But on Sunday, Araghchi said "direct negotiations would be meaningless with a party that constantly threatens to resort to force in violation of the UN Charter and that expresses contradictory positions from its various officials".

"We remain committed to diplomacy and are ready to try the path of indirect negotiations," he added, according to a foreign ministry statement.

"Iran keeps itself prepared for all possible or probable events, and just as it is serious in diplomacy and negotiations, it will also be decisive and serious in defending its national interests and sovereignty," Araghchi said.

On Saturday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said his country was willing to engage in dialogue with the US "on equal footing".

He also questioned Washington's sincerity in calling for negotiations, saying "if you want negotiations, then what is the point of threatening?"

in reply to xiao yun

Any sane person would. Their word means nothing.

Reminder: US under Trump were the ones to break the last agreement signed with Iran.

The fediverse has a bullying problem

So check it out: Mastodon decided to implement follower-only posts for their users. All good. They did it in a way where they were still broadcasting those posts (described as "private") in a format that other servers could easily wind up erroneously showing them to random people. That's not ideal.

Probably the clearest explanation of the root of the problem is this:

Something you may not know about Mastodon's privacy settings is that they are recommendations, not demands. This means that it is up to each individual server whether or not it chooses to enforce them. For example, you may mark your post with unlisted, which indicates that servers shouldn't display the post on their global timelines, but servers which don't implement the unlisted privacy setting still can (and do).

Servers don't necessarily disregard Mastodon's privacy settings for malicious reasons. Mastodon's privacy settings aren't a part of the original OStatus protocol, and servers which don't run a recent version of the Mastodon software simply aren't configured to recognize them. This means that unlisted, private, or even direct posts may end up in places you didn't expect on one of these servers—like in the public timeline, or a user's reblogs.

That is super relevant for "private" posts by Mastodon. They fall into the same category as how you've been voting on Lemmy posts and comments: This stuff seems private, because it's being hidden in your UI, but it's actually being broadcasted out to random untrusted servers behind the scenes, and some server software is going to expose it. It's simply going to happen. You need to be aware of that. Even if it's not shown in your UI, it is available.

Anyway, Pixelfed had a bug in its handling of those types of posts, which meant that in some circumstances it would show them to everyone. Somebody wrote on her blog about how her partner has been posting sensitive information as "private," and Pixelfed was exposing it, and how it's a massive problem. For some reason, Dansup (Pixelfed author) taking it seriously and fixing the problem and pushing out a new version within a few days only made this person more upset, because in her (IMO incorrect) opinion, the way Dansup had done it was wrong.

I think the blog-writer is just mistaken about some of the technical issues involved. It sounds like she's planning on telling her partner that it's still okay to be posting her private stuff on Mastodon, marked "private," now that Pixelfed and only Pixelfed has fixed the issue. I think that's a huge mistake for reasons that should be obvious. It sounds like she's very upset that Dansup made it explicit that he was fixing this issue, thinking that even exposing it in commit comments (which as we know get way more readership than blog posts) would mean people knew about it, and the less people that knew about it, the safer her partner's information would be since she is continuing to do this apparently. You will not be surprised to discover that I think that type of thinking is also a mistake.

That's not even what I want to talk about, though. I have done security-related work professionally before, so maybe I look at this stuff from a different perspective than this lady does. What I want to talk about is this type of comments on Lemmy, when this situation got posted here under the title "Pixelfed leaks private posts from other Fediverse instances":

Non-malicious servers aren’t supposed to do what Pixelfed did.

Pixelfed got caught with its pants down

rtfm and do NOT give a rest to bad behaving software

dansup remains either incompetent for implementing badly something easy or toxic for federating ignoring what the federation requires

i completely blame pixelfed here: it breaks trust in transit and that’s unacceptable because it makes the system untrustworthy

periodic reminder to not touch dansup software and to move away from pixelfed and loops

dansup is not competent and quite problematic and it’s not even over

developers with less funding (even 0) contributed way more to fedi, they’re just less vocal

dansup is all bark no bite, stop falling for it

dansup showed quite some incompetence in handling security, delivering features, communicating clearly and honestly and treating properly third party devs

I sort of started out in the ensuing conversation just explaining the issues involved, because they are subtle, but there are people who are still sending me messages a day later insisting that Dansup is a big piece of shit and he broke the internet on purpose. They're also consistently upset, among other reasons, that he's getting paid because people like the stuff he made and gave away, and chose to back his Kickstarter. Very upset. I keep hearing about it.

This is not the first time, or even the first time with Dansup. From time to time, I see this with some kind of person on the Fediverse who's doing something. Usually someone who's giving away their time to do something for everyone else. Then there's some giant outcry that they are "problematic" or awful on purpose in some way. With Dansup at least, every time I've looked at it, it's mostly been trumped-up nonsense. The worst it ever is, in actuality, is "he got mad and posted an angry status HOW DARE HE." Usually it is based more or less on nothing.

Dansup isn't just a person making free software, who sometimes posts angry unreasonable statuses or gets embroiled in drama for some reason because he is human and has human emotions. He's the worst. He is toxic and unhinged. He is keeping his Loops code secret and breaking his promises. He makes money. He broke privacy for everyone (no don't tell me any details about the protocol or why he didn't he broke it for everyone) (and don't tell me he fixed it in a few days and pushed out a new version that just makes it worse because he put it in the notes and it'll be hard for people to upgrade anyway so it doesn't count)

And so on.

Some particular moderator isn't just a person who sometimes makes poor moderation decisions and then doubles down on them. No, he is:

a racist and a zionist and will do whatever he can to delete pro-Palestinian posts, or posts that criticize Israel.

a vile, racist, zionist piece of shit, and anyone who defends or supports him is sitting at the table with him and accepts those labels for themselves.

And so on. The exact same pattern happened with a different lemmy.world mod who was extensively harassed for months for various made-up bullshit, all the way up until the time where he (related or not) decided to stop modding altogether.

It's weird. Why are people so vindictive and personal, and why do they double down so enthusiastically about taking it to this personal place where this person involved is being bad on purpose and needs to be attacked for being horrible, instead of just being a normal person with a variety of normal human failings as we all have? Why are people so un-amenable to someone trying to say "actually it's not that simple", to the point that a day later my inbox is still getting peppered with insistences that Dansup is the worst on this private-posts issue, and I'm completely wrong and incompetent for thinking otherwise and all the references I've been digging up and sending to try to illustrate the point are just more proof that I'm horrible?

Guys: Chill out.

I would just recommend, if you are one of these people that likes to double down on all this stuff and get all amped-up about how some particular fediverse person is "problematic" or "toxic" or various other vague insinuations, or you feel the need to bring up all kinds of past drama any time anything at all happens with the person, that you not.

I am probably guilty of this sometimes. I definitely like to give people hell sometimes, if in my opinion they are doing something that's causing a problem. But the extent to which the fediverse seems to like to do this stuff just seems really extreme to me, and a lot of times what it's based on is just weird petty bullying nonsense.

Just take it it with a grain of salt, too, if you see it, is also what I'm saying. Whether it comes from me or whoever. A lot of times, the issue doesn't look like such a huge deal once you strip away the histrionics and the assumption that everyone's being malicious on purpose. Doubly so if the emotion and the innuendo is running way ahead of what the actual facts are.

I said better, not more secure. It's not as easy to accidentally leak the message. It's equally easy to intentionally leak it.

‘Unhappy’ Trump shaken by Musk briefing on secret China war plan

Summary

Donald Trump was reportedly “unhappy” and “frustrated” after learning Elon Musk would be briefed at the Pentagon in March on secret U.S. war plans involving China.

The meeting, initially planned to include classified content, was scaled back after public backlash over Musk’s business ties to China.

Though Trump dismissed the reports as “fake news,” insiders say he was upset about being blindsided.

Musk, who requested the briefing, called the coverage “propaganda” and threatened prosecution over leaks.

Who the fuck is in charge here? I mean, it's obvious Trump sold the Presidency to Musk for the $290mil he spent getting Trump elected and as a result - out of prison. But it still needs to be said. There is nothing normal about a President being upset because he "found out" that an unelected neo-Nazi from South Africa is being briefed on war plans. Trump isn't just the weakest President of all time, he's a straight-up puppet.

cross-posted from: lemmy.ml/post/28202261

The international Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement are calling on people to cancel Game Pass subscriptions, avoid Microsoft-owned video game properties such as Minecraft and Call Of Duty, and boycott all Microsoft Gaming and Xbox-branded products in protest at the company’s reported business connections with the Israeli military.

The call follows allegations this January about the Israeli military’s usage of Microsoft’s Azure cloud technology and artificial intelligence products in the course of its bombardment and invasion of Gaza.

According to a joint investigation between the Guardian, Israeli-Palestinian publication +972 Magazine and Hebrew-language outlet Local Call, with additional reporting from Drop Site News, Microsoft have “deepened” their relationship with Israel’s defence establishment since 7th October 2023, when several Palestinian militant groups struck across the border and massacred over a thousand people. Israel responded to the attack by mounting a ground offensive and airstrikes that have destroyed much of Gaza and killed tens of thousands of Palestinians.
