Storage, DoGE, and cognitive biases against tape
Technology reshared this.
Keep in mind that tapes are still the most efficient storage medium, in terms of both cost and physical space used. What they lack is speed. These characteristics make them the perfect medium for archiving and backup.
To add: there's no way money can be saved by switching to another medium. Switching to HDDs, SSDs, etc will be many times more expensive, and switching to cloud would be much more expensive over the long run. It's unclear whether he wants to move existing data to other mediums (very expensive and stupid - the tapes are already there and have almost no upkeep) or just new data (slightly less stupid).

New York City got a new subway/metro map
Full size here : mta.info/map/5256
Old map here nycurbanism.com/map-store/1972…
The new map was designed by the MTA’s Creative Services Mapping Department and, like many major subway systems around the world, utilizes a diagrammatic style, employing bold, straight lines making it much easier for the eye to follow and more suitable for digital users. The white background, bold colors, horizontal writing and use of black dots make the map more ADA-friendly and easier for people with low-vision or cognitive disabilities to read.
Designers also focused on text legibility, keeping text on one line wherever possible and making better use of open space to alleviate crowding and using a black subway bullet with a white character to provide maximum contrast for easier reading. The legend on the map is now more detailed and includes accessibility, transfer, and safety information, as well as a QR code that leads users to the MTA website.
Although this map is a new design, the creative team drew inspiration from previous maps including:
- Preserving the official brand colors established by the 1979 and 1998 Hertz maps
- Using a similar geometric and diagrammatic aesthetic introduced to the New York City Subway with the 1972 Vignelli diagram and revived by its successors, Waterhouse Cifuentes

This is a very good article, since Trump is surrounded by these people - not just oligarchs (who value money and autonomy) but politicians (who value power or the proximity to it) and other sycophants.
What connects all of these people is the belief - likely not even a conscious one - that a move that helps them in the short term is all that matters. They think handing over or demanding others hand over power to Trump is going to endear them to him, protect them, empower them, enrich them. They have myopia and have never seriously looked at Russia, which Trump is clearly modeling the US after.
The lesson is clear, and demonstrated well by this article: yes, it will all work great. Right until they pass through a pane of window glass or end up in a prison camp.

Hey folks,

‘60 Minutes’ calls BS on Trump’s reason for dystopian deportations
Summary
A 60 Minutes investigation revealed that 75% of the 238 Venezuelan migrants deported by the Trump administration to El Salvador’s Cecot prison have no criminal records.
Only 22% had non-violent offenses, and about a dozen face serious charges.
The administration used wartime authority under the Alien Enemies Act to justify the move, despite a federal judge calling the action “bad faith.”
DHS defended the deportations, claiming many migrants are uncharged criminals. Critics, including the ACLU, warn the process bypasses due process and sets a dangerous legal precedent.

Only 22% had non-violent offenses, and about a dozen face serious charges.
This makes it sound like most of them had violent offenses. To clarify from the article:
75% had no criminal record
22% had "a criminal history—mostly for non-violent offenses like theft, shoplifting, and trespassing"
3% had "unclear records"
"A dozen of the 238 migrants were accused of murder, rape, assault, and kidnapping."
and about a dozen face serious charges
clearly they don't face ANY charges. that implies due process, which they did not receive.

Republican senator floats using violence against journalists who report 'fake news'
Summary
Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) posted a video suggesting journalists would report "less false stories" if violence were still used to resolve disputes.
He referenced the 1890 Capitol shooting of Rep. William Taulbee by reporter Charles Kincaid, who was acquitted.
After backlash, Mullin claimed he was joking and criticized The Oklahoman for covering the story.
A former MMA fighter, Mullin had previously threatened a union leader in a Senate hearing. Critics say his remarks echo Trump’s escalating “fake news” rhetoric and hostility toward the press.

Summary
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene asked her MAGA followers to send money to her 22-year-old son via Venmo to "buy him a beer."
Critics slammed the request as a "grift," noting her estimated $21.93 million net worth.
Social media users across the spectrum questioned why a wealthy congresswoman would solicit money for her adult son.
After the uproar, Greene deleted the post. The incident followed reports that she made significant Treasury trades before Trump’s tariff announcement, prompting further scrutiny over her financial conduct.

Musk again distances himself from Trump tariffs by scoffing at Lutnick’s attempt to explain duties on penguin island
Summary
Elon Musk distanced himself from Trump’s tariff policy, criticizing Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and trade adviser Peter Navarro.
CNBC reported Musk lost over $30bn since the tariffs were announced, amid stock market volatility and falling futures.
That financial hit may explain his sharp jabs at officials defending the policy. Musk advocated for a U.S.–EU "zero tariff" trade zone, diverging from Trump’s approach.
Meanwhile, protests against Musk and Trump escalated, and Musk’s political spending failed to sway key elections.

Bernie Sanders: law firms that cut deals with Trump administration ‘sell out their soul’
Summary
Bernie Sanders condemned major U.S. law firms for striking deals with Donald Trump after executive orders targeted attorneys who opposed him.
Calling the firms motivated solely by profit, Sanders said they “sell out their souls.”
Firms like Willkie, Milbank, and Skadden agreed to terms that included pro bono work for Trump-aligned causes and a halt to race-based hiring to avoid punitive orders.
Others, like Perkins Coie and WilmerHale, fought back in court. Sanders warned such capitulations undermine democracy and criticized Trump’s enlistment of Elon Musk to cut federal programs.

The post Xitter web has spawned soo many “esoteric” right wing freaks, but there’s no appropriate sneer-space for them. I’m talking redscare-ish, reality challenged “culture critics” who write about everything but understand nothing. I’m talking about reply-guys who make the same 6 tweets about the same 3 subjects. They’re inescapable at this point, yet I don’t see them mocked (as much as they should be)Like, there was one dude a while back who insisted that women couldn’t be surgeons because they didn’t believe in the moon or in stars? I think each and every one of these guys is uniquely fucked up and if I can’t escape them, I would love to sneer at them.

Trump official admits US workers won’t get jobs in factories spurred by tariffs
Summary
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick admitted on CBS’s Face the Nation that US workers won’t reclaim traditional manufacturing jobs under Trump’s tariff-heavy strategy.
While promising “trillions” in new investment, he confirmed that new factories would be automated. Lutnick touted support roles like mechanics and HVAC technicians instead.
Critics cite the tariff policy inconsistency and rising consumer costs.
Market reactions have been severe, with steep losses and fears of trade wars as China and others prepare retaliatory tariffs.

It is very easy to get people to go against their own best interests with a sufficient degree of propaganda. And the volume of propaganda has been tilted towards fascism for (conservatively speaking) a decade.
Wall to Wall "Immigrants from gangs affiliated with the CCP are doing a 9/11 every day to your jobs and your white women" coverage for most of a generation is going to shape public perception regardless of how High IQ the audience.

Rural people, by and large, aren't stupider people -they just have different experiences with education than urban voters. These are human problems, organizational problems.
It is true that when the People to Square Mile ratio tilts a certain way you're less likely to encounter opposing viewpoints, which favors conservativism. But these are generalities, nothing more.
I'm sick of seeing rural America get thrown under the bus by so many publications. A truly democratic America would see the breadbasket for what it is - the bell curve.
But these GODDAMN FASCISTS have gotten so entrenched in conservative circles over the past century, making it more and more impossible for reasonable Satan-fearing blue-collar Anarchists like me to do our FUCKING JOBS and help them build STRUCTURES THAT WILL HELP THEM... sorry I get a little annoyed

Seems to me that if people outside the country stop buying our food, the prices for that food here should drop pretty dramatically when they try and dump what they've earmarked for export here instead. The farmers are still screwed, but I 'think' we're fine since we're kinda the breadbasket of the world.?
Coffee and tea on the other hand xD Yeah, we can't grow that.

If you like light to medium roasts you can easily roast your own at home with a decent air popper. A decent one will set you back about $25 if you don't bargain-hunt. I paid $18 for mine.
You can get good green coffee for around $5 - $12 a pound. You can roast a pound in about an hour. If you don't drink gallons a day it saves a lot of money.

Edit: I like your optimistic view though. Realistically though you guys are going to go through a very rough time. This is not going to be as simple as well we just won't send it overseas, because you guys rely a lot on imports with Mexico, Canada and China being your top importers of various foods and agricultural products.

Same conclusion as everyone. If Democrats want to survive, they have got to start pushing these online information siloes shamelessly like Republicans do instead of rambling on about issues, door to door, like it’s 1950. It’s like they’re fighting drones with swords.
It sucks. But if they aren’t going to reign in big tech and literally criminal media, well, they better join the mess they're complicit in.

in reply to brucethemoose • • •I'm not sure that's possible because the Democratic platform doesn't have the sort of populist appeal that Trump's Republican platform does. Moderation can't compete with extremism in this domain. I suppose that the Democrats could try to pivot to their own (presumably class-based) form of populism but, at least from my point of view, one very strong reason to support the Democrats is because they aren't populist. Having one populist party versus another would be a lose/lose situation.
I don't have an alternate proposal. It may actually be the case that social media will eventually force every serious political movement to pivot towards populism and create its own truth in order to be competitive, but then who would make the policy decisions in a world of meme warfare?

Failing that (and it already failed in the US, seeing how we basically crowned Big Tech), well… Two populist parties is better than a monoparty. And maybe a party can get someone "cynical" who will say absolutely anything but, behind closed doors, doesn’t drink so much of their own Kool Aid.

We need to start pointing out that there are a shit ton of rural folk in the city. Cities are our true melting pot and why they're usually very liberal. They are surrounded by the "thems" in the rural boogie man scenario. The city people work with them, talk to them, see them on the street and they are human also.
The covid portion is going to stick with me awhile too. The rural areas should have had the least amount of deaths during covid and I think that was what Trump was counting on. They aren't on mass transit and don't have to see their neighbor if they don't choose too. They had a natural social distancing. But they were 3 to 4x the death rate. The lack of interaction makes them more racist and that racism made them die more. It's a crazy way to look at it.

The media is pushing this narrative about "Trump voters" so that liberals will go "FAFO" and jerk off about leopards. The fact remains that most of the people hurt by these policies didn't vote for them.

I'm fully aware it's harm reduction and this ship has been sinking under Neoliberals and Fascists since Reagan converted his former opposition to the corpo take into today. I haven't had a candidate to vote for in a general election in my entire life. I'm 40. Yes Ive volunteered in primaries for a better path.
But I did eat the rancid shit and vote neoliberal every time, because affirmation ribbons you can't eat or live inside are still better than scapegoats. I hated voting for Kerry, Obama, Clinton, Biden, and Harris, but I took my medicine and did it with a funeral dirge in my heart telling myself it's better that less people get hurt than more. The ship has been sinking my entire voting life regardless of party, but it's been crystal clear it sinks faster under fascists than neoliberals. Something something to that starfish it mattered.
The people that could vote for Harris but didn't can get fucked right along with the Trump voters as far as I'm concerned. My empathy is reserved for people too young to vote and people who voted against this.
Willful ignorance about your own society and governance is no excuse. "Teehee I'm not political I'm keeping up with the Kardashians/stupid sports GAMES" means you didnt care about anyone else, feel free to diaf.

Midterms are less than 24 months away. You're not going to get a viable third party.
If you want progress, start finding and supporting the Dems you like in the primaries.
