As an older torrent gen, I tried Debrid for the first time.
Yes. All the yes. I was shaky on it at first, because I really didn't want to dive out of my depth when it comes to piracy (which really only includes torrents). I thought it was going to be confusing, but it really is just "sign up, pay, and get your API key". And the price is right (using realDebrid).
However, I'm a little concerned. This makes it all so easy to stream and such, but what happens when everyone starts using it and torrents are no longer downloaded and properly seeded? Should I go out of my way to download something after I watch it and then seed for a few weeks? I still keep my VPN around, so that's totally an option. I'm using Stremio in conjunction with realDebrid.
I think I just want to know a bit more about how it works and how the P2P functions. I want to be able to give back, but I only seed a few torrents at a time. I just don't have the money for a large seeding server right now (which I may fix with a Pi5 at some point). Seeding is currently my only option/skill in helping piracy stay alive and the digital world stay free.

As a curious afterthought: Does anyone remember Azureus when it was just Azureus? I had a hard time remembering the name (it changed to Vuze) until the other day when I was listening to this: (YouTube for those that use other frontends). This tune really brought back some good old memories of the OG (loose term, they're OG to me) torrent pirates and their BANGER keygen music. Legends of their time... I really do look up to them. They're fucking heroes.

Russian disinformation on X: Botnet spreads quotes by “Nikola Tesla’s nephew," who praises Elon Musk and accuses Ukrainians of burning cars
cross-posted from: lemmy.sdf.org/post/32323159
ArchivedThe Russian disinformation network “Matryoshka” is spreading fake videos on X, posing as Western media and quoting “relatives of Nikola Tesla” who glorify Elon Musk and criticize Ukrainians, the Bot Blocker project told The Insider. The videos, bearing the logos of Euronews, Deutsche Welle, and Car&Driver, show photos of Nikola Tesla, Musk, and Ukrainian protesters, with a voiceover reading the script.
One of the videos asserts that Tesla's heirs are receiving threats from Ukrainians because of Musk and Tesla's company name. Another video claims the grandnephew of the famous scientist accuses Ukrainians of setting Tesla cars on fire.
“Nikola Tesla's nephew Dusan Kosanovic has endorsed Musk and his company. Kosanovich says he is proud to have the name of his illustrious ancestor associated with such a company. And he is sick of Ukrainians around the world protesting Musk and Tesla. 'All the negativity around Tesla has to do with a small group of people no one has to worry about. Ukrainians can only destroy what others have created with hard work.' Earlier, a wave of arson attacks on Tesla cars swept across the U.S. and Europe.”Meanwhile, open sources do not contain any reference to a Tesla descendant named Dusan Kosanovic. The famous scientist did have a nephew — his younger sister's son, Sava Kosanovic, but he died in 1956. No data on the existence of Sava Kosanovic's son could be found — to say nothing of any quotes regarding Musk or Ukrainians. Elon Musk himself has yet to repost these videos.
[...]
The disinformation campaign known as Matryoshka (“Russian doll”) began as early as September 2023. It was first described by the Bot Blocker project. Most frequently, bots use videos denigrating Ukrainians, bearing the logos of reputable Western media outlets in order to create an appearance of credibility. Earlier, the campaign organizers used Twitter to appeal to Western journalists with the request that they “verify the information” — namely, the network’s own fake materials and anti-Ukrainian propaganda. These posts were then shared en masse by stolen accounts, ensuring a broad circulation.

Trump warned of a 'Kamala economic crash' in resurfaced campaign clips as tariffs tank market: 'Every accusation is an admission'
Summary
Trump’s campaign warnings of an economic crash under Kamala Harris have resurfaced as markets plunge under his own administration.
In 2024, Trump predicted a “1929-style depression” if Harris won. Now, following his April 2 “Liberation Day” tariff hikes, global markets are collapsing.
The Dow fell nearly 350 points, while major international indices dropped 8–13%. Critics call the crash ironic and self-inflicted, with “every accusation is an admission” trending online.
Economists warn Trump’s trade war and unilateral tariffs could trigger the very recession he once forecasted under Democrats.

Trump says EU must buy $350B of US energy to get tariff relief
Summary
Trump has rejected the EU's "zero-for-zero" tariff offer on cars and industrial goods, demanding instead that the bloc commit to purchasing $350 billion of American energy to offset the trade deficit.
Following his implementation of 20% tariffs on EU goods last week, which triggered significant market downturns, Trump indicated openness to negotiations while emphasizing his "America First" stance.
He also criticized EU product standards as "non-monetary barriers" designed to block American exports.

These are from an archeology textbook about ancient Christian Ritual Magic. I skipped some because these are my favorites so far. Also I can't get over the transition from the spells for horny men to the spells about women trying to get rid of the horny men (although I'm a little miffed that they stuffed them all into one chapter when the horny men each got their own individual ones). Honestly though most of the positive things I gain from reading ancient spiritual texts is just the reassurance that humanity hasn't fundamentally changed. My mother always acted like older times were simpler and purer. No, no they were not.

Ill and disabled people will be made ‘invisible’ by UK benefit cuts, say experts
Hundreds of thousands of seriously ill and disabled people will become “invisible” and cut adrift from local support services as a result of the government’s £5bn programme of disability benefit cuts, experts have warned.
Claimants who do not qualify for personal independence payment (Pip) or incapacity benefits would lose a “marker of need” with local councils and NHS bodies, making it “nearly impossible” for them to access help, said the consultancy Policy in Practice.
This would “effectively erase some of the most vulnerable people” from the system – including those with life-limiting illnesses including cancer, multiple sclerosis and lung conditions – while making it harder for care services to deliver preventive support
More than 230,000 disabled people will lose access to Pip and the incapacity element of universal credit as a result of the changes, losing at least £8,100 a year, Policy in Practice estimates in a briefing. Nearly 600,000 more who do not claim universal credit will lose or not qualify in future for Pip.
On top of the direct financial hit, disabled people will struggle for visibility in local care systems that use disability benefit awards to deploy support and protection, from housing and council tax relief to debt enforcement safeguards.
Loss of disability benefits means they will lose priority status on council housing waiting lists and will be deprived of priority status in homelessness assessments, leaving them at “greater risk of prolonged homelessness”, the briefing says.

Canadian researchers are being asked politically charged questions when trying to secure U.S. grants
Summary
Canadian academics seeking U.S. government grants now face politically charged questionnaires asking whether their research involves DEI, climate issues, or “gender ideology,” in line with Trump administration policies.
Critics say this ideological vetting threatens academic freedom and could have a chilling effect on research.
The U.S. National Institutes of Health alone funded $57M in Canadian research last year.
Experts warn this may undermine cross-border collaboration, though some see opportunity for Canada to attract displaced scholars and strengthen its research leadership globally.

EU set to fine Apple and Meta amid escalating trade war
Summary
The European Commission is expected to issue its first fines under the Digital Markets Act (DMA) this week, targeting Apple and Meta for violations related to app store restrictions and data use terms.
The decision comes amid rising U.S.-EU trade tensions, with Washington preparing new tariffs and accusing Brussels of unfairly targeting American firms.
While EU officials emphasize regulatory enforcement, not retaliation, political and trade implications loom large.
Apple and Meta lobbied against the fines, while Spotify and other rivals supported enforcement. U.S. countermeasures could begin April 2.

FBI raids home of prominent computer scientist who has gone incommunicado
cross-posted from: lemmy.sdf.org/post/31879711
cross-posted from: slrpnk.net/post/20187958
A prominent computer scientist who has spent 20 years publishing academic papers on cryptography, privacy, and cybersecurity has gone incommunicado, had his professor profile, email account, and phone number removed by his employer Indiana University, and had his homes raided by the FBI. No one knows why.Xiaofeng Wang has a long list of prestigious titles. He was the associate dean for research at Indiana University's Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering, a fellow at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a tenured professor at Indiana University at Bloomington. According to his employer, he has served as principal investigator on research projects totaling nearly $23 million over his 21 years there.
He has also co-authored scores of academic papers on a diverse range of research fields, including cryptography, systems security, and data privacy, including the protection of human genomic data. I have personally spoken to him on three occasions for articles here, here, and here.
"None of this is in any way normal"
In recent weeks, Wang's email account, phone number, and profile page at the Luddy School were quietly erased by his employer. Over the same time, Indiana University also removed a profile for his wife, Nianli Ma, who was listed as a Lead Systems Analyst and Programmer at the university's Library Technologies division.According to the Herald-Times in Bloomington, a small fleet of unmarked cars driven by government agents descended on the Bloomington home of Wang and Ma on Friday. They spent most of the day going in and out of the house and occasionally transferred boxes from their vehicles. TV station WTHR, meanwhile, reported that a second home owned by Wang and Ma and located in Carmel, Indiana, was also searched. The station said that both a resident and an attorney for the resident were on scene during at least part of the search.
Attempts to locate Wang and Ma have so far been unsuccessful. An Indiana University spokesman didn't answer emailed questions asking if the couple was still employed by the university and why their profile pages, email addresses and phone numbers had been removed. The spokesman provided the contact information for a spokeswoman at the FBI's field office in Indianapolis. In an email, the spokeswoman wrote: "The FBI conducted court authorized law enforcement activity at homes in Bloomington and Carmel Friday. We have no further comment at this time."
Searches of federal court dockets turned up no documents related to Wang, Ma, or any searches of their residences. The FBI spokeswoman didn't answer questions seeking which US district court issued the warrant and when, and whether either Wang or Ma is being detained by authorities. Justice Department representatives didn't return an email seeking the same information. An email sent to a personal email address belonging to Wang went unanswered at the time this post went live. Their resident status (e.g. US citizens or green card holders) is currently unknown.
Fellow researchers took to social media over the weekend to register their concern over the series of events.
"None of this is in any way normal," Matthew Green, a professor specializing in cryptography at Johns Hopkins University, wrote on Mastodon. He continued: "Has anyone been in contact? I hear he’s been missing for two weeks and his students can’t reach him. How does this not get noticed for two weeks???"
In the same thread, Matt Blaze, a McDevitt Professor of Computer Science and Law at Georgetown University said: "It's hard to imagine what reason there could be for the university to scrub its website as if he never worked there. And while there's a process for removing tenured faculty, it takes more than an afternoon to do it."
Local news outlets reported the agents spent several hours moving boxes in an out of the residences. WTHR provided the following details about the raid on the Carmel home:
Neighbors say the agents announced "FBI, come out!" over a megaphone.A woman came out of the house holding a phone. A video from a neighbor shows an agent taking that phone from her. She was then questioned in the driveway before agents began searching the home, collecting evidence and taking photos.
A car was pulled out of the garage slightly to allow investigators to access the attic.
The woman left the house before 13News arrived. She returned just after noon accompanied by a lawyer. The group of ten or so investigators left a few minutes later.
The FBI would not say what they were looking for or who is under investigation. A bureau spokesperson issued a statement: “I can confirm we conducted court-authorized activity at the address in Carmel today. We have no further comment at this time.”
Investigators were at the house for about four hours before leaving with several boxes of evidence. 13News rang the doorbell when the agents were gone. A lawyer representing the family who answered the door told us they're not sure yet what the investigation is about.
This post will be updated if new details become available. Anyone with first-hand knowledge of events involving Wang, Ma, or the investigation into either is encouraged to contact me, preferably over Signal at DanArs.82. The email address is: dan.goodin\@arstechnica.com.

A poll by Hays found hybrid work remains dominant, with 77% of professionals following a mixed model.
Commuting costs were the top concern for 73% of workers, and 66% of employers feared backlash over stricter mandates.
While some firms push for more in-office time, only 8% plan to enforce full returns. Many employers recognize hybrid work's benefits for productivity and retention.

Ukraine won't sign minerals deal with US if it threatens EU membership, Zelensky says
Summary
President Volodymyr Zelensky warned on March 28 that Ukraine will reject a proposed U.S. minerals deal if it endangers the country’s EU accession.
A new draft, reportedly granting the U.S. extensive control over Ukrainian natural resources, raised concerns over economic sovereignty.
Zelensky said lawyers will review the agreement, emphasizing it must not conflict with Ukraine’s constitutional EU alignment.
The initial deal would create a joint fund reinvesting extraction proceeds into Ukraine. The White House views it as a way to recoup aid, but Kyiv remains cautious after a prior dispute with Trump.
Ukraine won't sign minerals deal with US if it threatens EU membership, Zelensky says
The Financial Times reported on March 27 that the latest version of the agreement proposed by the U.S. includes terms that would grant Washington unprecedented control over Ukraine's natural resources through a joint investment fund.Kateryna Denisova (The Kyiv Independent)

Why Norway is restoring its Cold War military bunkers
Summary
Norway is reactivating Cold War-era military bunkers in response to rising tensions with Russia.
Two iconic underground structures—Bardufoss Air Station and Olavsvern naval base—are being upgraded to protect expensive F-35 fighters from drone attacks and to monitor Russian naval movements in the Arctic.
Norway’s actions reflect growing concern over Russia’s military buildup and Arctic ambitions, which escalated after Russia increased military activity in the region around 2006-2008.
Other nations are following suit: Russia has reactivated about 50 Arctic bases, Sweden returned to its underground Muskö naval base, while China and Iran are building new underground military facilities.

Norway's proximity to the USSR in the Cold War led to it building many military bunkers – some of them vast secret bases. Tensions with Russia have brought the bunkers back into focusMark Piesing (BBC)

Trump’s US doesn’t just think Europe is obsolete – it wants to see it dead
Summary
The "Signalgate" scandal confirms the Trump administration's deep disdain for Europe, viewing it not just as obsolete but actively wanting its demise.
There are 3 major implications: an inevitable trade war where Europe must unite; continued US pressure on Greenland despite European pushback; and Europe needing to support Ukraine not just without US help, but potentially against US interests.
European leaders who stand firm against US bullying are seeing rising approval ratings.
Europe should "with firmness, courage and politeness" chart its own path forward.
Trump’s US doesn’t just think Europe is obsolete – it wants to see it dead
Whether it is by declaring a trade war or by bullying Greenland, visceral hatred is driving American policy, says Guardian Europe columnist Nathalie TocciNathalie Tocci (The Guardian)

France’s far-right leader Le Pen guilty of embezzlement in ruling that could end her career
Summary
A French court found far-right leader Marine Le Pen guilty of embezzling over €3 million in EU funds, potentially ending her 2027 presidential bid.
The judge ruled Le Pen and 24 others misused European Parliament funds between 2004 and 2016 to pay National Rally party staff, calling it a deliberate scheme, not an error.
Prosecutors had sought five years’ prison and a public office ban. Even with an appeal, a provisional execution could bar her candidacy.

Can Hackers Bring Jooki Back To Life?
Can Hackers Bring Jooki Back To Life?
Another day, another Internet-connected gadget that gets abandoned by its creators. This time it’s Jooki — a screen-free audio player that let kids listen to music and stories by placin…Hackaday
Holy shit the article is far less tame than the title. They provided several ways to run commands as root and they can be generated as an over-the-air HTTP call. As per the article, if you buy the Jooki domain, it's very likely you can control every single Jooki on the market. You can make the speaker do whatever you'd like. Pretty scary stuff. One has to wonder what nerds can do with that kind of tech: turn speakers into a low quality mic? Use them as bots for a DDoS attack? Just start blasting heavy metal music? Or just brick every device?
It's pretty wild what the devs have done here. I can excuse executing commands as root from a file on the SD card. It's not exactly safe or smart but it's also not the most dangerous thing to assume only people with access to the device would do that. Hardly a worry for most parents as long as you're not especially reckless. But to allow OTA root level commands to be run? That's a horrible design. At least setup a user that can only execute a few pre-designed scripts. Don't just give them carte blanch to run havoc on your hardware.
Just another reminder that every wifi enabled device is likely a ticking timebomb. Especially low quality devices meant for kids. Baby monitors, speakers, etc. have a history of being built cheaply and poorly. That's why I bought non-wifi baby monitors for my family.

in reply to Eyedust • • •[...] what happens when everyone starts using it and torrents are no longer downloaded and properly seeded?
It's already happening. More and more people stream torrents and don't seed back which kills public torrents. Imo Debrid is not as big of an issue as they don't necessarily tax the P2P network as much as someone only streaming torrents and automatically dumping them directly.
Additionally downloading torrents after you watched them does not make much sense as you'd tax the network without benefit (unless you seed to say a ratio of 2+).
If you currently have torrents there's nothing stopping you from continuing to seed them if you don't need the storage. Long term seeders are especially important for keeping torrents alive and you won't need to redownload content you've watched just to seed it.
As long as you seed to 1.0 ratio (e.g. 1GB up, 1GB down) per torrent you don't hurt the network. More means you compensate for someone not seeding.
Eyedust
in reply to Chewy • • •Ever since my early Demonoid days I've made sure to seed at least 2.0 ratio. I think when I left, I was at 2.6. Now I just make sure to seed a week minimum, and two if the torrent is hurting for seeders. I'll remember this. What I'll do is stream via realdebrid on my TV while I seed the same on my PC.
Basically, I was downloading and seeding then using a USB to watch on TV, but my TV and Bluray player are super picky about the codec formatting. Realdebrid was my solution. When it comes to just watching by myself on PC, I still grab the torrents anyway.

However, unless you're willing to pay a year for something, everything else is pretty high in price. AirVPN at least let me go for three months at the same price as Mullvad.
I had my eye on Windscribe, but just couldn't get behind $9 on a month by month or a year being the next step up for $5. It is an option if you can swallow the $70 for a year though. I just don't like that business tactic on principal.
This community has a lot of VPN recommendation threads too. You might be able to find a thread if you search the community.
Edit: If you do opt for AirVPN and are on Linux, I recommend running it through Eddie. Open Eddie, find the logo on the top left, click and find port forwarding. It will take you to the AirVPN port forwarding page where you can login and set a P2P port.

in reply to TechnoCat • • •Yeah, I remember the streaming ability. I never used it for that, I liked it because it was more focused on ratios. Then they started enforcing ratios which you could skip by paying. Basically your download rates would be cut unless your ratio was good. My ratio was always high, but I couldn't really stand how they started muscling people.
I think they tried backpedaling, but most of the scene had already moved back to uTorrent. That's probably why they changed the name to Vuze. This was all a long time ago though and I'm at the age where I'm finally starting to lose some memory of my younger days. They say it's downhill from 50, but really its downhill from 30.

I left the torrent scene for a bit and came back around 2016 using Tixati on Windows. Now I'm on Linux running qbit and that's probably where I stay.
klu9
in reply to Eyedust • • •Yeah, I too remember there was some anger but not the reason for it. Licensing issues, maybe? Anyway, with the kerfuffle, bloat, and Java requirement, it didn't have enough to keep me from µTorrent.
Also been using qBittorrent for the last few years, on Windows and the last two years on Linux. With search plugins for key sites, so I can avoid the popups that even uBlock Origin can't prevent.
(Due to an unpatched security vulnerability in the repo version of qB, currently using AppImages of latest versions of both qB and qB-enhanced. Only difference I personally notice is that qB-enhanced follows my system theme, dark.)

in reply to Appoxo • • •I use private trackers exclusively for content I want to "own" or want in the highest possible quality. Stremio/RD is great though for my wife to be able to search new media and potentially stream in okay quality without fucking with sonarr. Or popular TV you're maybe not sold on but would try an episode. Or for old SD content, like tossing on a 90s show for a few episodes. To be honest, I live in a world of ad block and Stremio is sometimes the only way I even know something is out...
Anyway, they complement each other well.

in reply to Appoxo • • •I've never looked into private trackers, tbh, but I may keep an eye out and see what is possible. I'll stay in with the community and maybe something will pop up, but I'm pretty happy with public. I've known my way around torrent safety since '07. The only cease and desist I've ever gotten was because of my ex at the time.
From what I understand, private trackers are something that sort of comes to you rather than asking for them. Back when Demonoid was by invite only (I haven't been there in a long time so I'm not sure how it is now), I made friends with the right people and got in early. I managed to stay in because I was a good seeder and well trusted.
Oh wow, I missed a lot. I guess Deimos went missing? Then it looks like Demonoid got a sort of community fork, but it doesn't seem to exist anymore. Huh. I'm reading that the fork didn't focus on private trackers as much as just getting the old crowd back, it seems. Wild how things have changed.

They can track my payments, but there's still nothing outlawing payment (yet) for services and they can't prove you're using those services for illegal purposes. However, realdebrid offers payments through crypto, not sure about the other debrid services.
Its so much faster to stream using debrid than over torrent, and as another mentioned here it taxes the network less. I'm 50/50 on it, because I'd much rather promote seeding what you take, but Stremio with the Torrentio addon setup for debrid is the fastest method with the most coherent UI I've used to date, and it lets you continue from where you left off, a lot like most streaming services.

Either they'll shut it down or laws will become restrictive enough to make using it illegal. It'll be the '90s and early 00's again they'll be dragging students and housewives into court.
There will always be enough people out there who refuse to put their payment identity online that torrents aren't going anywhere.
Hell, even torrents couldn't kill news groups.
Eyedust
in reply to rumba • • •Even late 00's. I started young enough to know that old song and dance. Disgusting behavior, imo. The underpaid suddenly have their lives ruined, jail time, and millions in debt just because they sought a way to save a little money. Family lives ruined for what would be considered pocket money for big corp. The people that sell pirated content, sure, but they've destroyed people that were just using it.
Which is why I'll never stop being a pirate. They've made examples of us for years by slaughtering the already destitute. Now the masks are coming off and their outstretched hands for your money, money that the common people don't have in a repression, isn't even subtle anymore. Those that never even looked to piracy are now seeing why its been done for years as subscriptions and buying content become more and more greedy.
Its a double edged sword, really. We need more people to realize and see the greed that's rolling off these companies. That will, in turn, get a lot of piracy tools outlawed and we'll have to get really sneaky and fly under the radar for a bit (much like the '90s and '00s). Imo, its a necessary evil. I'm just upset because I know we'll lose more good people. And trust will be at a low soon. I remember the rumor that YIFY sold out because every tracker for YIFY rips was suddenly infested with feds and being watched closely.

If you want an off ramp from it, private trackers are easy to get into now. They want interviews where they give you the answers first and people still fail them.
What are you torrenting and watching on?
If you’re one of those people who just leaves their computer on at home all day you can go ahead and set up the arr stack in preparation for getting that pi5 you mentioned.
No matter if you stick with rd or switch to something else: If you have a spare old computer lying around you can use that too. People will say “no, your power bill!” but the cost is almost always negligible and the hard drives you add for more storage will be the same power draw no matter what. For me, running twelve drives in an old gaming case with a 4th gen i5 comes out to a little under a buck more a month than my rpi3 in the same (not really, I couldn’t plug the sas expander and hba into it, but with the drives in a set of external enclosures) configuration. And the rpi was less stable. And less upgradable. And less powerful and less efficient as I started to use the cpu more.
A free/$20 “junk” pc starts to look a hell of a lot better in the long term when it’s competing against a platform that can only be cheaper per month at idle.
Eyedust
in reply to stupid_asshole69 [none/use name] • • •At the moment I'm torrenting and seeding through qBittorrent but now I have a bit of streaming through Torrentio via Stremio w/ realdebrid. I do a lot of older shows that seem to be hurting for seeders, as I like to rewatch my favorites.
Completely true. The most power consumption usually comes from the screen, unless you're compiling something from source on the daily and ramping that CPU to 100%. Even then, screens have come a long way from the CRT power guzzlers. Running through SSH will negate screen cost and seeding takes nothing except network, which at the moment is still unlimited (barely, thanks to ISPs being allowed to throttle you now).
I do have a little XP system sitting in the attic. I last booted it up a couple years back and was impressed it ran, is it hadn't been turned on in nearly 14 years. The problem is space, unfortunately. I have barely any space left in my tiny apartment for even a headless tower to run.
My PC runs and seeds nearly 24/7, barring some system restarts (I distro hopped to base Arch and am still settling in and changed prefs). One of the first things I learned in my PC Repair class was that turning your computer on and off is actually worse for it, especially if you aren't running spinning drives.
According to my teacher, cooling down and heating up the PCB in your rig causes hairline fractures over time. One day you'll flip that switch, a pulse of electricity will go through them and something will be toast. Not to mention you'd run up more of an electric bill. Like how a purely gas-driven car uses more fuel from starting and stopping. I've always left my PC on and, like I said, even my 14 year old setup still runs fine.
