Sorry for the wall of text...
I carefully paged through my manual, and did several searches for things like "thermometer" - what I saw earlier today was a thermometer and a set of bars with the first one lit. All indications were that my camera was overheating?
I was shooting from our car today - a photo drive, as we have done before. The car was cool, but not so cold as to need extra clothing, and not hot. The camera spent time both in sun and shade. It never showed the 2nd bar. I was shooting still pictures, not movies (as the web article suggested). At one point I pulled the battery out and it was slightly warm, but not hot. The indicator would remain for a while, then might go away - only to return when taking a few more pictures.
Blowing the AC in the car on the camera did not make the icon go away.
I am not to sure what is going on. After returning home, I swapped out the battery for my other one and was not able to re-create the issue (even taking rapid pictures), I swapped the batteries back again and was still not able to re-create with the battery used on the drive.
One of the batteries was accidentally washed in the laundry, but they both seem to work, and take a charge, and run the camera equally well. I should have marked the washed one - now I am not sure which one it was. The washed battery had one of those plastic covers over the connectors. Anyway both batteries are acting perfectly for the moment.
What to do?
How do I post images in comments?
(xpost from feddit.online/post/553845# where it was suggested that I ask here)
When creating this post, I have a bunch of markdown options, but when I reply to someone, or comment on a post, I only have a text box available.
Should I be able to put images in there somehow? Or is that functionality not available in Piefed?
Let me know if there is a better spot for me to ask this! I tried searching, but couldn't find anything already addressing it

TL;DR:
Bukele says he’ll free the ~250 kidnapped/wrongfully imprisoned Venezuelans, if Maduro releases the same number of Venezuelans from Venezuelan prisons - primarily imprisoned political dissidents.
Bukele’s administration also is pushing for wrongfully imprisoned passport holders from other nations to be freed from Venezuelan prisons, though it’s less clear if that’s a stipulation of the same agreement.

Does anybody actually believe that bukele cares about political freedom? jfc.
Like I said, my understanding of South American politics is limited.
While Wikipedia can be prone to bias of course, it seems Maduro has been described as an autocrat and the UN has put Venezuela on human rights watchlists, and Venezuelans have fled the country for reasons similar to what the US seems to be aiming to achieve in the past three months.
Arguably it can be considered evil to force those kidnapped back into the same country they tried to flee instead of freeing them and offering them asylum, but here we are.

What ex-security officials think of Pierre Poilievre’s top secret security stance

More likely that he’s taken hidden foreign money (most likely from India) to run his campaigns.
But we’ll never know for sure, since he refuses to get clearance.
How does that work if he becomes PM? Look no further than the current US or HU governments.

Jeremy McKenzie is a Canadian political figure known for his involvement in right-wing movements and as a prominent figure in the "Diagalon" movement, which has been associated with far-right ideologies. He gained attention for his controversial views and statements, particularly regarding issues like government policies and public health measures.
In 2022, it was reported that McKenzie was running for a seat in the House of Commons as a candidate for the People's Party of Canada (PPC). However, he faced challenges, including issues related to security clearance, which may have impacted his candidacy.
Just like PP: security clearance issues...
I agree, but that gets tricky, as the PM is appointed to the position by their elected peers.
So essentially, anyone appointed to a cabinet position should be required to already have security clearance. But then that means that people could be excluded from those positions if they didn’t get clearance, even if the reason they didn’t get clearance was that others refused to give it to them (eg, the people elected them, parliament elected them to cabinet, but the government itself was hostile).
Damn, Global News not completely shilling for the conservatives?
Sure, it's still not a complete damnation of smallppnobrains, but at this time it could theoretically still hurt him due to last advance election day being Monday and a election day a week away. Perhaps they just had to throw something in to balance out all the pro-cuntservative stuff they air to appear "unbiased"?
Indeed; that’s exactly the type of thing Trump took advantage of in the US — getting away with behaviour because nobody had ever considered someone might decide that since it wasn’t illegal, why not do it?
But if we’re changing the rules to prevent ass hattery like PP’s, we need to ensure that it protects against the other extreme too… because otherwise someone will eventually take advantage of THAT, to equal detriment of the Canadian public.

[1] It apparently no longer exists or is impossible to find now, but prior to the Democratic primary the NY Times did a profile on Adams in his Brooklyn brownstone. It was extravagant, and his comments in the article gave me a strong narcissist vibe. I was already leaning against him, but that pushed me into the "anyone but him" camp. Harris and Biden are fine with killing children as they scrounge for food. That's not a ticket I'm going to cast a vote for. Sorry!
If Harris had made an explicit statement condemning Israel's crimes and promising to get a ceasefire, I would have held my nose and voted. She didn't, so I didn't.
The anger people have for me is misplaced. You all should be outraged that the system forces people to choose between child killers and criminals for our leadership.
Sorry I don't want any part of that
That the system sucks doesn't absolve people from the choices they make when they have the opportunity. People who chose to not vote passively supported whomever won, thus Trump. Everyone who chose not to vote is culpable for the suffering the administration causes, aids or allows.
It was a trolley problem, anyone claiming that washing their hands of the decision means they bear no responsibility for the results is deluding themselves.
It even doesn't makes sense if you're a single issue voter on genocide. There are only 3 possibilities:
1. Thryet Believe Trump would support it less, they should vote for Trump, as that would reduce it.
2. They Believe both support it about the same, they should vote based the 2nd/3rd/etc issue, because you can't impact you first, so you should impact something else you care about.
3. They Believe Harris would support it less, they should vote for Harris, as that would reduce it.

Do you remember in the first Trump administration when he separated thousands of children from their parents, and then just kinda... lost them? One of the things that the Biden administration did was track down several hundred of those kids and families and reunite them. If Trump hadn't have instigated that policy in the first place, those families would not have been separated and Biden wouldn't have had to dedicate significantly more time to cleaning up the mess than Trump did in making it.
I get it. You hate the rightward drift that's been encapsulating the Democratic party since Eisenhower. I agree with you. But you know what? They're way fucking better than the alternative, and the alternative is what you decided you were ok with when you didn't vote. So your bullshit justifications are falling on deaf ears here, because I don't want to hear why you think it's ok giving the reins to this fucking madman in the hopes that at some point in time, the lives he ruined will be made whole.
They’re way fucking better than the alternative, and the alternative is what you decided you were ok with when you didn’t vote.
The margin between them narrows every election cycle, and every election cycle we're told by people who totally agree with us that the rightward shift is bad that we need to shut up and vote how we're ordered because the other side is decreasingly worse than we are.
Did you expect that it would work forever?
The margin between them narrows every election cycle
Uh huh. And that's why it's imperative that we do everything we can to primary these fucks and get them out of office. But none of that fucking matters during a general election, which is what this chucklefuck failed to vote in. Doing otherwise puts you anywhere on the spectrum from a bad citizen to a complete monster.

I did not think it was possible to miss the mark by this wide of a margin. Democrats are not my "team", you fucking cretin. They are the non-fascist party. When you have a fascist running against a non-fascist, you pick the non-fascist. How is this a difficult concept for you to grasp?
If they weren't significant enough to listen to, they're not significant enough to blame.
If you want to blame them, first admit that you were wrong to ignore them in favor of netanyahu and cheney.
I'm really trying to make sense of what you wrote, but you're sort of doing my head in with your twisted logic.
Are you saying that because Harris didn't pander to this idiot specifically that there is no reason he should vote for her? Because that's really fucking stupid. You vote for Harris because she's not fucking Donald Trump. Just like you vote for ANYBODY other than Adolf Hitler.
Is the problem just that you don't think Trump is that bad, or something? Like... haven't you read the news once in the last 8 years?

You are so married to the idea of moving to the right and only the right that you are unwilling to admit that the situation has changed. In the last three elections (I know, in your mind it's still the 90s and nothing has changed, but humor me) we have run three centrist candidates. Two lost, one won but it was a squeaker.
Moving to the right and only the right has hit a wall. You'll advocate for it forever, regardless of the actual political reality. After all, the alternative is a nightmare hellscape where people are paid a living wage for their labor and healthcare is more than a means to extract every last dime from people before they die.
I’m not advocating for the move to the right.

EDIT: math.
Biden won with record breaking voter turnout. Trump lost by more in 2020 than Harris did in 2024.
How can Trumps loss in 2020 be “squeaking by” if it is a larger loss than Harris’ loss? Your bias is showing.
2020 was a decisive victory because Biden appealed to centrists.
Progressives have never had a victory let alone a decisive one.

while Biden ran on a progressive platform (which he couldn’t get passed because of Manchin and Sinema).
Well, and because it was a pack of lies from the start.
I will give him credit for trying fairly hard to get his agenda through, especially in the first 2 years. He kept trying to find ways to get student loans forgiven without Congress, even when the courts repeatedly blocked him, and he did try to get some parts of Build Back Better that got cut in 2021 into the Inflation Reduction Act. He certainly tried harder than Obama to deliver on his platform.
He then abandoned the populous economic platform in 2024 and tried to pretend that letting most of his agenda get blocked by his own party was a huge accomplishment. He also tried to get to Trump's right on immigration, materially supported a genocide, and refused to step down despite clear cognitive issues, so all-in-all, 2024 was a bad campaign.

Not as far as centrists are concerned. They got everything they wanted. They got their genocide. They got to betray immigrants and trans people, they got to have a presidential election without a primary, they're still getting their genocide, they're still getting republican immigration policy, and they're still getting anti-trans hate. Plus, they get to blame the left they spent the entire campaign alienating and saying they didn't need.

The title is not supported by the article at all. Here's the entirety of its quote from Jeffries:
“Here’s the thing,” Jeffries told Jonathan Karl on ABC’s “This Week.” “I’m gonna really focus on trying to defeat Republican incumbents so we can take back control of the House of Representatives and begin the process of ending this national nightmare that’s being visited upon us by far-right extremism.”
It's at best dodging the question. I assume Jeffries will support his incumbents and isn't a friend to progressives in general, but this statement isn't making clear anything.

He just opposed a plan to put money behind progressive candidates.
Progressive candidates in safe seats would allow them a platform to spread progressive messaging, showing americans that the Dems can offer a platform to get excited about, without sacrificing their ability to tack right in specific electorates where that's tactically sound.
There are seats where the realistic choice is a fascist or a conservative dem. Focusing funds to those battles ensures the democratic party stays conservative, fails to offer a meaningful alternative, and fails to avert fascism.

All the interviews Stewart has done were so good and that one infuriated me the most. He really did try and push on him a little but the guy repeatedly avoided saying anything that wasn't on message and totally useless. Just really pathetic.
I liked pretty much all the guests he has had on but I genuinely came away hating Jeffries. Dude either doesn't get it or just doesn't care. Just absolutely infuriating.
Idk, he comes off as too conciliatory so often. He had a guy on a few weeks ago, deep libertarian, and Jon really didn't do much but agree with his points.
I don't expect him to be a table-thumping communist in these interviews, but he has an audience that are there because of his views, and letting guests off the hook is something he should save for the TV show, this podcast promises to be (and usually is) more serious about being a political outlet.
When he gets someone on that he agrees with, like Ezra Klein, they get all fired up together and I really enjoy those discussions. I wish he'd get fired up with these Democrats that push the status quo and rip them new assholes.
I saw David Hogg on one of the political shows this morning, and watched him defend himself from attacks by both Democrat (and ex-DNC chair) Donna Brazile and Republican Rinse & Repeat, and he came out on top. He wasn't taking any shit from Rep traitors or weak-ass Dem weenies.
If they thought they were going to humiliate or intimidate him, they figured wrong. He's not afraid of these old losers from either party. This guy survived a school massacre, and immediately started standing up for governmental change, all while he was a teenager. He's got more courage than everyone on that stage combined.
He gained a LOT of supporters with that appearance. He needs to be on a lot more shows, and he should be touring with AOC and Bernie.
Replacing an "oldster" with a younger version of the same "oldster" is not an improvement. We'll win one election cycle with that approach, and then it's back to the Nazis.
We need actual progressives in office, not people who say "Yeah, that progressive policy would be nice, and you should vote for us because we agree that you think it's nice, but we're not going to actually do it."
It is a huge improvement over entrenched fixtures who have been bought & paid for for decades.
And who says he isn't progressive? I haven't seen anything to indicate that he's a corporatist neo-lib that currently controls the party.
Entrenching a new permanent fixture is not an improvement.
And who says he isn't progressive?
He calls Nancy Pelosi a "fighter who is delivering", rather than an architect of Democratic failures.
We don't need a bunch of Nancy Juniors drawing on the walls of the Capitol.
I'm no big fan of Pelosi, but she was effective in blunting much of HitlerPig's agenda in his first term, and she was a good partner with Obama. She did a better job than Jeffries is doing, and isn't nearly as much to blame for Democratic ineffectiveness as that insipid scumbag Chuck Schumer. Its long past time for that backstabbing bitch to STFU & GTFO.
And one cautiously positive statement about an elder statesperson could easily be just a respectful nod, as would be expected from the vice-chair of the party. That's called politics.
The reason that we have been taken over by Nazis is because Democrats are so willing to entirely reject those who could help the most, based on one phrase that they dont like. People aren't perfect, and our candidates don't have to be perfect. They just have to be better than Nazis. That should be easy, but Dems serm to prefer full-blown Nazis over a Dem candidate that is 90% of what they want. It makes no sense at all.
So you have exactly the same attitude and strategy as pelosi, you make excuses for her failures and the greater failures of the DNC, but we're supposed to believe that you're somehow different and that you're actually winning against the Nazis?
How fucking stupid do you think we are? Trump beat you DNC lovers TWICE. You are garbage and we're done with your weak, lying, fascist-enabling bullshit. If you want to chase fascists over progressives then go join the GOP. We're done with being the scapegoats for YOUR failures.
WTF are you talking about? You don't know shit about me. I'm not a "DNC lover," I'm not even a Democrat, I'm a lifelong Unafilliated Independent since 1977. I had a 12 year Reddit account, with over 900K karma, and was permabanned in the February bloodbath because of my activist anti-MAGA/Republican views, although I've been highly critical of Democrats, too. The MAGA Nazis have my account posts, and there is no doubt I'm on a list for future trouble, so I'm not just a keyboard warrior, I've got skin in the game. I fully expect to be grabbed after they declare Martial Law next summer.
I call'em as I see'em, and I've been screaming about the weakness of Democrats for decades. I was hollering for Pelosi to move aside for years, and give younger players a chance. Unfortunately, she was succeeded by Jeffries, who is nearly as weak, ineffective, and uninspiring as Schumer.
I've liked Hogg for years, since he emerged as a strong voice in the wake of the Parkland Massacre, and consider him the exact opposite of Jeffries/ Schumer - strong, fearless, and inspiring. I don't exactly know why he's spending his time at the DNC and not running for Congress, but i suspect he is intending to grab the reins, and make major policy changes within the entire Democratic party, something that is desperately needed. Perhaps after that, he'll run for office, he's still incredibly young.
His strategy to spend $20 million to primary weak, ineffective Dems is an excellent one. The same threat on the Republican side keeps them in line and supporting the evil MAGA agenda, and HitlerPig employs that threat routinely. Clearly, a primary threat is one that resonates strongly with Reps, and it will resonate with Dems, too. It already is, judging by their panicked reaction.
So I'm going to support Hogg, even if he made a respectful nod to Pelosi. I'm not going to try to sabotage the best inside man the Progressives have because of an innocuous phrase he once uttered about an elder statesman.
Bullshit like that sort of silly controversy over nothing, while the Reps remained focused on winning, is why the MAGA Nazis are in power. They kept their eye on the 1st Rule of Politics - Get Elected - while the Dems distracted themselves with all manner of minor bullshit. The Reps recognize that Dems are easily distracted, so they toss all sorts of chum in the water, knowing Dems will take at least some of the bait. That's why the strongest reputation that Dems have is their ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. I've seen them do it multiple times, in this century alone.
Hogg is dedicated to injecting strength into the Democratic Party, something NOBODY else is talking about, and he has positioned himself in the party structure to achieve that, or at least attempt to. Now he needs the support of Democratic voters to give power to his demands, and force those changes. I would much rather have fearless young Progressive warriors like AOC, Crockett, Frost, et al, then the old school Tolkien dragons sleeping on their hoard of treasure, and Hogg is the ONLY one forging a path in that direction.
Sanders? Too old now that biden is no longer in office.
AOC? Women suddenly can't win because she's seizing the moment.
Hogg? Not pro-school shooting enough.
There is always some excuse for why we can't move to the left.
8 states didn't adopt liberal concealed carry licensing policies since the early 00s. 42 states did.
Outside of those 8 states, 30 million people obtained licenses. The overwhelming majority in populous swing states. Their children grew up with armed parents. Their children are now of voting age.
The polls you're talking about oversample the 8 blue states that didn't adopt those policies. The DNC has utterly failed to recognize that the nation's attitude on guns has shifted drastically over the past 25 years, especially in the swing states.
Which is exactly why states like Ohio and Florida have shifted from swing states to reliably red.
Ohio is reliably red because of stupid, easily influenced racists.

"Hakeem Jeffries makes it clear he’ll stand by incumbent House Dems"
Nothing there about "progressives". Subtitle makes it clear he's opposing David Hogg's single agenda candidates.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on Sunday pushed back on David Hogg’s effort to fund primary challengers against select Democrats in deep blue seats, arguing in favor of a more efficient allocation of party resources.
I mean this is the first line of the article where he's saying he's against progress
You're saying that voters in Ohio and Florida are single issue voters
I am saying that Ohio and Florida were pretty evenly balanced, politically, back when concealed carry was prohibited.
Then both states adopted concealed carry licensing.
Both states saw a flood of voting-age people go out and prove they weren't felons. Those people also spent thousands of dollars on classes, safes, ammunition, holsters, range time, targets, shooting glasses, ear protection, range bags, gun locks, and, of course, the firearms themselves. They spent more money buying pants that could carry those holsters inside their waistbands, and belts that would comfortably support those in-waistband holsters, and shirts that would reliably conceal their holstered firearms.
I am saying that they are significantly invested I'm their hobby, and are largely responsible for having tipped the scales in Florida and Ohio.
He can do whatever he wants. We have primaries for this very reason.
Progressives basically won control of the DNC. Did the old guard really think they were just going to get to sit there & do nothing?
Man, I miss the simpler times of just being able to enjoy a Tamagotchi. I got mine roughly 18 years ago for my 8th birthday because I needed to have one to play with my elementary school friends and it was all I needed in terms of games. I had a PSP and played on PC but the Tamagotchi was just awesome to have and take with you to school, to friends, to relatives and look out for. I'd play with friends, visit their Tamagotchis, get married, have kids... Their website was awesome too because you'd be able to type in a special password on their website generated by your Tamagotchi to essentially roam around the website with your pal and play games and shop for items and stuff. Even though Tamagotchis didn't have any internet of their own, you'd essentially be connected to the entire Tamagotchi world through a simple website. Might be remembering some things wrong - don't quote me on any of this lol
I remember visiting family in Ukraine where I used to take it with me and play with neighbourhood kids. We'd play some kinda war game (ironic) and I'd look at the watch of my Tamagotchi as if I'd be able to see bomb timers on it (idk, don't ask me).
Idk just random tidbits I was just reminded of. All of that to say, Tamagotchis are awesome and kids nowadays are worse off not having them around. Maybe I should dig mine up at my parents' and see if it still works. Just need a CR2032 battery

Bluesky, the decentralized social network, is working on a new verification system, and users are not happy.David Uzondu (Neowin)
I'm on mastodon and bluesky: the first is even less populated than here and a big part of the interesting content comes from bot reposting popular accounts from x or reddit, while the second is far from being THE solution but it's nowadays a -not wildly populated- compromise.
I don't condone (while I understand) the Turkish bans and I'm not interested in a verification system: if I'd like one, I'd use en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EIDAS.
I hope bluesky will correct its approach for what they can (the "good old" twitterin the golden era was banned in Turkey)

Being that algorithmic just makes any Twitter-like design too easy to abuse.
Again, Lemmy (and Reddit) is far from perfect, but fundamentally, grouping posts and feeds by niche is way better. It incentivizes little communities that are concerned about their own health, while users have zero control over that shouting into the Twitter maw.
Bluesky, the decentralized social network [...]
Were only one instance exist or did I miss something?
No, PDS federation is fully open now.
They're also actively supporting development of 3rd party appviews and relays.
Partially - something running independent infrastructure like Whitewind (blogging on atproto) will still work just like before (it's easier for them to run it independently because you don't need a full network view, just pull in the posts from the user's PDS for standalone display)
When the work to make appviews easier to run makes it more practical this will be less of a risk.
Maybe you remember PDS federation not being open for a while, but it's open now.
Running a public appview can be very expensive, but they're working on making it cheaper to run one with a limited scope.
You can easily host your own instance with a simple docker stack.
I dont know of any public instances except the main but I also havent searched.
No, it doesn't scale "quadratically". That's what going viral on Mastodon does to a small instance, not on bluesky. Pretty much everything scales linearly. The difference is certain components handle a larger fraction of the work (appview and relay).
Both a bluesky appview and a Mastodon instance scales by the size of the userbase which it interacts with. Mastodon likes to imagine that the userbase will always be consistent, but it isn't. Anything viewed by a large part of the whole Mastodon network forces the host to serve the entirety of the network and all its interactions. So does a bluesky appview, in just the same way, but they acknowledge this upfront.
Meanwhile, you CAN host a bluesky PDS account host and have your traffic scale only by the rate of your users' activity + number of relays you push these updates to. Going viral doesn't kill your bandwidth.
In fact, it is worse than the storage requirements, because the message delivery requirements become quadratic at the scale of full decentralization: to send a message to one user is to send a message to all. Rather than writing one letter, a copy of that letter must be made and delivered to every person on earth
That's written assuming the edge case of EVERYBODY running a full relay and appview, and that's not per-node scaling cost but global scaling cost.
Because they don't scale like that, global cost is geometric instead (for every full relay and appview, there's one full copy with linear scaling to network activity), and each server only handles the cost for serving their own users' activity (plus firehose/jetstream subscription & filtering for those who need it)
For Mastodon instance costs, try ask the former maintainers of botsin.space/
I'm sad that bots in space had to spin down, but there are still bots on Mastodon. One server quitting didn't take everything down.
The part where if a mastodon post gets popular, it has to serve that to everyone makes sense because it's kind of like a website. Maybe there could be a CDN like Cloudflare that a mastodon server could use to cache responses?
The part about Bluesky that doesn't sound good to me is "to send a message to one user is to send it to all". Wouldn't this be crazy with even 100 servers for 10000 users, vs 2 servers with 5000 each? Not sure how the math works but it doesn't look good if they have to duplicate so much traffic.
So long as the checkmark isn't bought through some subscription service, I'm fine with this.
The whole reason why verification exists is because other will steal the name of someone famous and masquerade as them, with real world consequences. A verification system now means that certain platforms and people will get more attracted to be there, and thus Bluesky will grow.

The problem with domains is that regular people would need to know what a domain is and what verified ownership says about the account in question.
Even then, reading domains is quite difficult, even for people who know about the topic: Humans are Bad at URLs and Fonts Don’t Matter

Domains only help you verify organizations and individuals you recognize directly.
This verification system also allows 3rd parties (it's NOT just bluesky themselves!) to issue attestations that s given account belongs to who they say they are, which would help people like independent journalists, etc.
So it is not given to a centralized authority, that is guided by for profit motives and also does the moderation of its plattform.
Where this can lead was shown with twiiter. The moment the central organization is captured, the central authority will abuse the authentification for its own goals. Then instead of just having to check for the authentification to be reliable you need to question everything that is on that plattform as a whole, which is infinetly more consuming, but also simply impossible.
It's the username so already quite visible.
For example someone at say, NPR, could use a name like @bob.npr.org which is only possible by verifying ownership of the npr.org domain name, so there is no need to vet anything.
Reminds me of a meeting my co-worker and I had with the IT staff of a company that is a customer using research instruments in our facility. The meeting was to ask us to enable data synchronization through SharePoint. (We're a Linux shop.) We asked what the issue was with getting their data files with SFTP. They said, "It's open source."
Then, a few beats of silence as it sinks in for us that there is no next step in the chain of logic. That is the totality of their objection.
Would it be so bad if it follows the same path as Twitter? If it connects people and organizations in an honest and helpful way for fifteen years?
Or we could all just keep shitting on it while it facilitates social and political movements and enables rapid communication across the planet. Then more than a decade from now when some Ultra-Nazi trillionaire buys it, we can all say "I told you so," and be real smug about it.
Bluesky is like a mini example of why Communism and Capitalism does not work. Centralization is a drug.
Editing to explain as some did not make the connection. This is a comment about centralization that even when a system has the best intentions like communism and in this case Blusky, centralization still will lead to corruption as anything centralized is ripe for takeover as power is a drug.
ElcaineVolta likes this.
You can not make any commentary on Communism here. You will get down voted even if your criticism was correct. Probably even more so and the reason why this is likely to get downvoted out of hand, as well.
Edit: Proven right. Yet again
All of it? Your definition of communism is the same as that of the failed dictatorships of the 20th century.
When most people nowadays talk about socialism or communism they talk about a democracy in the workplace and in politics. People who want a strong state that owns everything are a loud minority in leftist circles, as you can see on lemmy. But they're not as big in real life.
It's a bit cliche but the first paragraph of wikipedia says it better than I could:
Communism (from Latin communis 'common, universal')[1][2] is a sociopolitical, philosophical, and economic ideology within the socialist movement,[1] whose goal is the creation of a communist society, a socioeconomic order centered on common ownership of the means of production, distribution, and exchange that allocates products in society based on need.[3][4][5] A communist society entails the absence of private property and social classes,[1] and ultimately money[6] and the state.[7][8]
[9]en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communis…
My description above is just a quick way to point to the things that would change in our lived reality (assuming you live in a western democracy). You wouldn't have to share your house or car or whatever. Just take responsibility for your workplace with colleagues, just like you vote in a democracy.
Something like this unavoidable.
Example, ted cruz the car mechanic in marfa Texas has just has much right to use blusky as ~~professional shit bag~~ senator ted cruz. But hiw do tell the real one from the racid sack of weasels.
It's easy: cryptographic signatures. If you want to prove your identify, post a public key on something that you need to prove identity for (personal website or something) and sign your posts with the same key. That way everyone can tell the that the same key listed on the website is used for SM posts. Clients can check this automatically and flag anything on your "official" account that's signed with a different key.
This is much better than a checkmark system, because accounts get hacked and whatnot. It's really easy to check a cryptographic signature, and it's really hard to fake. If the website gets hacked, the signature won't match previous posts.
The main concern here is losing the key. If someone steals your key, generate a new one, and sign it with the old key and the new one. Boom, now everyone can tell you control both keys, while the attacker only controls the old one.
Ideally, they wouldn't see anything if everything is good. If there's an anomaly, flag it with a warning.
But yeah, you could put a checkmark on it, but then it actually means something more than "this person spent money." Ideally, the checkmark would only show if it's a publicly verifiable key outside the platform.
I do not see anything to be angry or disappointed about?
Verification badge was good, the dumb thing Twitter did was throw it away by letting anyone pay for it.
If the same authority is doing verification that is also doing moderation and both ultimately in a for profit setting, that has conflict of interest.
We dont know how reliable bluesky moderation will stay. We dont know how they will respond to political pressure. We dont know how they will monetize past the growth phase and then could also argue a "service fee" for verification.
In a perfect world none of these would happen, but then everybody could still be on twitter and be fine there.
Nah it was not good. Domain names already do that and are accessible to all at all times with full transparency and decentralization. Bluesky is literally regressing.
Even mastodon's verification system is better than checkmarks.
i think the .id.au domain licensing rules are a pretty reasonable middle-ground:
auda.org.au/au-domain-names/th…
The id.au domain name you choose must match or be an acronym or abbreviation of your first name or family name, or your nickname
you have to provide ID to register any .au, so you’re verified as a person, and though they don’t pre-check your nickname, AFAIK if there’s a complaint you do have to prove that you’re “known by” that name
id.au domain names | auDA
An id.au domain name provides a unique way for individuals to build a personal profile online.auDA
"Everyone should be able to setup their own domain and mess with DNS records to get a verified account"
Do you realize how utterly disconnected from reality this sounds?? Technical people that have absolutely not clue on how make good UX for end users is how we got Mastodon in the first place, and why its adoption is abysmal.
You can pay someone to do that for you tho it's not any different form paying someone to verify you ina centralized way. Its really not that hard.
Even with more complex setups like mastodon servers you already see markets for this. You can get a basic managed instance for yourself for like 15$/mo - that's basically nothing for anyone who needs to verify themselves as a brand.
Decentralized isn't the right word to use for a system like this.
Even though BS is going to appoint multiple different volunteer moderators (aka "Trusted Verifiers") for this system, ultimate authority and control are entirely centralized with BS.

IMO it's not that blue check equals credibility, but rather it equals that you are who you say you are. This is a good thing particularly when it comes to public figures/officials — not for their sake, mind you, but for the sake of other people who may see a tweet from them. If the checkmark is there, then it's them. If not, then it's an impersonator. Right now it's difficult to tell.
Tl;dr: it doesn't make what they say real, it just makes them real.
Preaching to the choir
But anyway anyone who thinks bluesky is actually decentralised will learn sooner rather than later that that's not the case
It was selectively given to institutions and "major" celebrities before that.
Selling them dilutes any meaning of "verified" because any joe can just pay for extra engagement. It's a perverse incentive, as the people most interest in grabbing attention buy it and get amplified.
It really has little to do with Musk.
There's literally no restrictions other than simple rate limiting, which you can ask for exceptions for.

Seriously. How many more fucking times do we need to go around this goddamn merry go round until we just start calling each other on the phone and meeting face to face again. You know, where the only enshittification is the one you bring with you. It's fucking boring me now, how many of these stupid ass things I didn't join because I've already, apparently, gotten the memo and how, inevitably, something like this happens, and everyone acts surprised and disappointed , as though inevitability was a concept they felt they'd been given a sabbatical from or something.
This. Shit. Ain't. Free. There is an inherent cost, an "effort" required to communicate with others. You pay it with money, time or privacy. The overwhelming choice lately has been "privacy", but it's obviously something that not everyone is comfortable with, because we didn't have the term "enshittification" before we started this flavor of our collective idiocy.
Can I subscribe to your social media accounts? I would like to follow your opinions.
Nah, for real though, I'm so glad my best friend is still fairly analog and we use the phone for what it is (we just call each other when we want to meet up).
Lemmy is the last of social media that I use and I regularly take breaks from it because the echo chamber is very apparent and not something I wish to be consumed by.
ARE WE LEARNING HOW “SOCIAL MEDIA” WORKS YET HUMANITY?
Apparently not, because people keep feeling surprised and offended when the Networking Effect happens.

Idk, when are we going to get low-cost public transit and VoIP that's not like talking over two tin cans connected with string?
The checkmark is the wrong approach. You should never trust accounts, because accounts get hacked. We should instead use cryptographic signatures on individual posts, and clients can warn when that signature doesn't match the account's public key, or if that key changed recently. The private key would never live on the server, and ideally live outside the app.
This doesn't verify identity, it just proves the key didn't change. To establish identity, the person needs to use the same key in multiple places, such as posting it on a personal website or something. If a service wants to add their own stamp of approval, they can sign these public keys and embed them into the apl for clients to use (e.g. show a blue checkmark if Bluesky can verify the public key outside its system).
If the private key is compromised, repeat the process, potentially signing the new key with both the old and new key to prove control of both (or start from scratch if needed). Repeat whenever they get hacked.
Not sure where you're going with that, but it's a perverse incentive, just like the engagement algorithm.
Elon is a problem because he can literally force himself into everyone's feeds, but also because he always posts polarizing/enraging things these days.
Healthy social media design/UI is all about incentivizing good, healthy communities and posts. Lemmy is not perfect, but simply not designing for engagement/profit because Lemmy is "self hosted" instead of commercial is massive.
I can't believe the guy who originally administered the creation of Twitter would do all the exact same things that originally made him billions of dollars selling the company to Elon Musk.
There's no way he's just speed-running what he did last time in hopes of another $44B buyout.
If they really, really want to fix 99.8% of the problems with hate speech (and many other issues), each user needs to agree to have their real name, home address, email address, and phone number available to the public, in their profile. While what I've just said is completely absurd, for almost everyone, it's the anonymity that empowers people to say the absolute worst things.
Why don't most people in the checkout line (queue) at the grocery store act the same way they do in a traffic jam on a roadway? Because they're much more likely to be held personally accountable for their conduct. I wonder how much traffic would change, if our name, address and telephone numbers were required to be posted on all sides of our vehicles?
it’s the anonymity that empowers people to say the absolute worst things.
humans behave badly when they perceive they have social license to do so. anonymity has little to do with it

Reddit is full of Karma farmers.
I still use Reddit for the funny videos and nieche communities I don't get on Lemmy. But I have to constantly block accounts because they are blatantly farming. Super annoying.
I usually block every account that's reposting and has more than 100k Karma.
This is largely the problem with most social media, and generative AI has made this problem worse just like it has made other pretty terrible facets of human interactions worse.
Anyone who was paying attention on reddit the last couple years (even pre-pandemic) could see that bots were taking over. The main difference (love mods or hate them) was that mods who's subreddits didn't rely on bot content to stay active were moderating the bot problem as best they could.
Now, most of those mods aren't mods anymore and the vast majority only really want the engagement anyway so of course they'll let bots basically take over.
Reddit the corp never cared about keeping bots off the platform and they care even less now. Bot engagement counts. Bot views of ads count. Removing bots actively hurts their bottom line in the short term so of course they aren't going to do anything with that.
The actual human users on Reddit don't care because they're there to consume. It doesn't matter to them if the posts they engage with are made by bots or not.
On Reddit I have thousands of comments, over 240,000 karma, and I haven’t logged in in around two years.
But then, like with Lemmy, I picked my subreddits carefully and left when it seemed like they were being overrun with bots.
This account is a violent transphobic troll.
They post transphobic comments and calls for violence then whine about being banned from trans-friendly communities because they "just want some reasonable freedom to say what I want"

Which is an appropriate response when the Trump administration also illegally deports immigrants in the middle of the night.

celeste, ElcaineVolta, Blackout e themadcodger like this.
Yeah, the court rushed their decision specifically because they expected Alito to drag his feet and stall as long as possible. Alito was going to stall through the Easter weekend, which would give the jackboots time to rush the deportations. And the court has learned that Trump is using the deportations as a way to circumvent the law; If the deportees out of the ICE’s hands, then ICE can just shrug and go “talk to Venezuela about it” when ordered to give the deportees due process. So the SCOTUS 100% expected a massive surge of deportations over the weekend while Alito was stalling with writing his dissent.
In emergency orders, the justices don’t even need to say which way they voted. But Alito did anyways, specifically because he expected them to wait for his dissent before they announced the ruling. The fact that they didn’t wait (and Alito had to hurriedly shove the first draft of his dissent in) means that all seven justices who pushed it through were tired of putting up with his shit. To be clear, the rush was a giant “fuck you. We see what you’re doing; you’re not slick” to Alito specifically.
What he said wasn’t against the middle of the night judgment, he wasn’t “slamming” the court. He was angry at the administration for making it necessary. He said he opposed having to get up and work in the middle of the night because the admin was refusing to do their job. He didn’t disagree with the judgment, he was objecting to the fact that they are taking extraordinary effort now in order to weigh in on things that shouldn’t need their attention at all.
And honestly, Sammy, same. This clown show has demanded too much of my attention and it’s not theirs to demand. But it’s your job to make sure we don’t get to the point where this shit happens. That was your fuck up. Sometimes when I fuck up, I have to work extra to fix it.

I think you're reading it wrong. He definitely is pissed that the court has to make an emergency ruling in the middle of the night, but I think he would prefer that the court keep kicking the can down the road, and only ruling against the administration on narrow procedural grounds.
He knows he can't get the rest of the court to sign on to making Trump a King, but if the court never makes a ruling that directly prevents that, he will still have done the job that his sponsors pay him for.

Anti-Trump protesters in the US might look to the Czech Republic: ‘We are an example’
Yet the contrasting political fate of one of Hungary’s neighbours with similar historical antecedents may provide a glimmer of hope for the prospects of mass protest laying foundations for a successful onslaught against Trump, leading to victory at the ballot box.
The Czech Republic – once part of what was cold war-era Czechoslovakia and, coincidentally, birthplace of Trump’s first wife, Ivana – is a possible blueprint for how street protest can bloom into a unified electoral strategy that eventually unseats a billionaire leader with autocratic aspirations and apparent scorn for democracy.
In 2018, a popular movement, Million Moments for Democracy, began organizing rallies in the Czech capital, Prague, and other cities to protest the anti-democratic tendencies of the country’s prime minister, Andrej Babiš, who had been labelled “the Czech Trump”.

Harsono’s wife, Peyton, called Gad in a panic after she received a call from human resources at the hospital. Two Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) agents, dressed in plain clothes, had shown up and instructed the staff to stage a fake meeting in the basement so they could apprehend him, according to Gad.
Hospital staff were distraught but felt forced to comply.
“He unsuspectedly walks in, smiling, and then they just pull out their handcuffs and forcibly detain him, pushing against the wall, start frisking him, and stripping all of his belongings,” Gad said.
That's actually insane. Imagine complying with the gestapo at your job.
No shame.
ICE agents have no boundaries, they would probably walk into a hospital and arrest a heart surgeon mid surgery. Probably even arrest the patient on the table as well.

So far everyone I've seen making this accusation are one word replacement away from looking like an unhinged 4Chan rant about (((Them))).
Antisemitic folks like to make heavy usage of euphemisms to mask antisemitic topics behind socially acceptable language. 4Chan uses 'anti-globalism' as the euphemism for Jews.
Similar to how the ML instance uses 'anti-imperialist' talking points to push pro-Russian imperialism and anti-Ukraine talking points.
That kind of power is not in the regular pope's hands.
And sadly I was unaware he was visiting.
In February, without naming names, the Pope directly refuted a Catholic concept Vance had twisted to justify deportations. Vance had cited ordo amoris—the “order of love”—to argue that Americans should come first.Francis responded: “Christian love is not a concentric expansion of interests that little by little extend to other persons and groups.”
Vance, acknowledging the rebuke, called himself a “baby Catholic” and admitted, “there are things about the faith that I don’t know.”
Dude, I'm not Catholic at all and I could have told you that. It's not really complicated to see that Catholic interpretation Jesus would whip you out of the temple.

🤣 What??? Holy shit, lack of historical knowledge batman!
Would you like to refute the statement instead of just saying they don't know what they're talking about?
I'll start - Catholics were amongst (there were many) the first groups that the Nazis started targeting. It's not a coincidence that the intellectuals, the Jews, the Catholics, etc. were also the ones that had some reaallly nice silverware that would look great in the Fuhrer's country home. If nothing else, Catholics would be acting in their self-interest to oppose the Nazis.
Oh, for sure. It's not an area that I'm an expert in, but your conversation got me curious because I had heard both things, so I read a few articles. One of the interesting things is that the bit about Hitler's envoy wasn't broadly known until 2020 when the Vatican released a whole mess of documents that had been kept hidden previously. So there's maybe more reason for some people to have one impression based on what they grew up hearing, and others to have a different one based on more recent info, but even with the new info it seems nuanced.
It's easy to fault anyone who didn't take a clear stand against Hitler from this vantage point, but it must have been hard to be a world leader facing the possibility that Hitler would be successful and you'd have to deal with his empire. Pius XII supported the allies and it's obvious he was against Hitler, but he was reluctant to be overtly vocal about it, and he even entertained the envoy, which maybe he saw as hedging his bets (we can't know exactly what he was thinking). It's for sure stained his legacy.
Biden and several other politicians have been denied communion for not being anti abortion.

I'll never understand why people shit on him for fictional things when there's plenty of real things to shit on him for.
I honestly think it helps him/MAGA, because it teaches them, their supporters, and impressionable others that people make stuff up about him to criticize, so they can safely ignore criticism of him.
There's plenty factual stuff to use that far right people hate though:
- Being in the military with zero people skills means he was an ineffectual leader and a desk driving paper pusher
- He wears eyeliner
- He grew a beard to hide his weak chin
- He's a white nationalist with a minority wife who looks like she's at gunpoint every time she's on camera
Again, inventing a lie to attack him with will just galvanize his supporters. Use what's already true and very conflicting with far right ideology.
The attack point has to be something that both sides of the political spectrum finds repulsive. If only right wingers have a problem it makes the lefties look like hypocrites, and if it's something only people on the left care about it's ineffective.
Eyeliner and weak chins/beards aren't things people on the left tend to take issue with, while white nationalism and misogyny aren't things people on the right take issue with.
The military thing could work, but it's not punchy enough, it's too specific and not very funny. The couch fucker jokes are easy laughs.
Because the only things that actual bother him are being called a fucking loser and weirdo. The actually shitty things he does, he would do a million times and feel nothing.
And what you say can't be true, or the millions of lies he told would matter more.
Enjoy your cargo cult.

The "refuses to elaborate" is simple, Mathew 25 31-46.
It quite clearly says that you are to welcome the immigrant, feed the poor, care for the sick, and visit the prisoners.
Failure to do any of that is a straight shot to hell, no matter how much you claim to love god, you actually have to do the work, or it's off to hell.
Fun fact, Mathew 25 is the only place in the bible that references sending ordinary people to hell. All that fire and brimstone, it's actually in that one passage. Nowhere else does hell show up for normal people, just fallen angles and shit.
