InlineStyle, open fediverse based cloud

cross-posted from: lemmy.world/post/29544013

Hey folks,
We have been working on a project called InlineStyle

A European, open-source, fediverse based alternative to the Google ecosystem.

It’s a single platform with these services:
* 📧 Email address @inlinestyle.it
* 📹 Video sharing via PeerTube
* 🎵 Music streaming with Funkwhale
* 📝 Docs and Drive via Collabora/NextCloud
* 📒 Markdown based notes
* 🎮 Browser-based FOSS games (Celeste Classic, Tyrian, SuperTux, etc.)
* 🌍 Static personal site hosting

All hosted in Europe. No telemetry, no ads, no corporate BS.

It’s not a startup pitch, just something we built because we got tired of being locked in.

The idea is to keep it sustainable with a simple support plan (€1.90/month) that unlocks upload features and personal email/webspace.
Free tier available too, no login needed to browse.

🔗 inlinestyle.it/

🔗 mastodon.social/@inlinestyle

Would love your thoughts.
What should I improve? What’s missing for you to consider switching?

Our goal is to try to build a real #DeGoogle fediverse based path that doesn’t feel like a downgrade.
It will take time, but we are willing to try and stay committed to the mission.

Trump: The EU is ‘nastier than China’

Now that Trump had to lower his pants to his toes with China, is trying to frighten the EU to see if he can squeeze someone. He says the EU is nastier to them than China, that European countries are not fair and try to threaten the European countries. Of course is talking again about tariffs, but also about pharma prices and other kind of products in not a very smart way.
Hope that the EU stands firmly against him and his colleagues.

German Aerospace Center dismisses researcher over suspected espionage for China

cross-posted from: lemmy.sdf.org/post/34459495

The woman who appeared before the Munich Labor Court earlier this year was once considered a star of German scientific research. The researcher, whose name we are shortening to Z., was celebrated, honoured, and in high demand. She revolutionised an entire field; her lectures filled halls, she was showered with praise and prestigious awards. She was among the most frequently cited researchers in Germany and gained international attention as a top talent.

But her employment with the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Luft- und Raumfahrtzentrum, DLR) quietly came to an end almost unnoticed. No one spoke publicly about the reasons for her dismissal. In 2022, Z. lost her prestigious position there, and took legal action.

[...]

It was a suspicion of espionage that led to the DLR’s break with the brilliant researcher from China. A grave allegation that could destroy her career, should it be substantiated.

[...]

At this stage, it is neither possible to confirm nor deny whether Z. was in fact spying for China at the DLR.

[...]

[As an] investigation reveals, Z. maintains extensive connections to the Chinese defence apparatus. In Munich, she orchestrates a network of doctoral candidates and visiting researchers who previously worked at institutions linked to the military in China.

It cannot be ruled out that intelligence from Munich may have flowed into Chinese military technology. Several of the institutions with which Z. collaborated on research projects are involved in China’s notorious satellite programme. Experts suspect that the programme is intended, among other things, to monitor naval movements in the South China Sea – crucial to the territorial dispute over Taiwan.

[...]

At the TUM she is responsible for publicly funded multi-million-euro projects in the field of remote sensing combined with AI or social media data. She develops highly complex algorithms to extract geoinformation from satellite imagery – enabling, for example, the mapping of cities or the tracking of natural disasters.

[...]

According to the official project description, the research findings [of projects led by Z.] would be “invaluable for many scientific, governmental, and planning tasks.” This project supposedly puts Germany in “pole position” in the race for this technology.

In another publicly funded project, Z. explored the extent to which social media posts can be integrated into Earth observation, and delivered impressive findings. Her algorithms help determine, for instance, whether buildings are residential properties or offices. In her interview with the Helmholtz magazine, she says: “We know, for example, that in a residential building, many tweets are sent in the morning and evening, whereas in an office building, they are mainly sent during the day.”

[...]

For those at the TUM, where she remained a professor, the exact circumstances of her dismissal from the DLR were initially unknown. However, some of the roughly 40 members of staff at her department began to prick up their ears. Rumours started to circulate among employees in the department about supposed irregularities on the servers under Z.’s supervision.

It was the period shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Experts assumed that China could attack Taiwan in the near future. In light of global political threats, research collaborations with China were under greater scrutiny than ever before. Since 2022, CORRECTIV has published several investigations revealing how the Chinese state apparatus systematically uses research findings from international collaborations to advance its military technologies. This has been state doctrine in China for years and is referred to as the “military-civil fusion”.

Just over a year ago, a woman from Z.’s immediate professional circle contacted CORRECTIV with an initial tip-off. She wondered whether the research being carried out at the department might be falling into the hands of the Chinese military.

[...]

Z.’s biography is certainly impressive, but her official CV at on the TUM website does not disclose where she got her bachelor’s degree: namely, the National University of Defence Technology (NUDT) in Changsha – China’s most important military institution. It reports directly to the Central Military Commission, the highest military authority in the People’s Republic.

[...]

A “very large volume of data” from the satellite was reportedly transferred to a server under Z.’s supervision. Apparently, there was a “permanent streaming connection” between this server at the TUM and the DLR. While this was, in principle, permitted, the DLR’s counterintelligence team later determined that the server had not been adequately secured. According to their findings, it was not protected by the “TUM’s firewall” and was accessible from anywhere on the internet.

[...]

According to the DLR, a hacker attack on the server occurred in May 2022. The server was allegedly used for so-called Bitcoin mining – where cybercriminals illegally generate cryptocurrency using third-party servers or computers. The DLR concluded that “unauthorised third parties” thereby had access to all data stored on the server – including to the aforementioned sensitive satellite data.

[...]

She [Z.] hired individuals from institutions with military affiliations in China on many occasions, at times bypassing the DLR’s security clearance procedures. According to the DLR’s written statement to the works council, one such case was the original trigger for her dismissal in 2022: Z. is said to have made multiple attempts to continue funding a doctoral student with DLR funds, despite the institution’s rejection of him. Z. responded by saying that “there were never any specific or individual security concerns” about the researcher in questions. This, she argued, amounted to blanket suspicion.

android networking stabilization

so i am remembering way back when i had the HTC tytn 2
there used to be an .apk app that would cause the network to see long times of reduced MBPS transfer as steady connection.

basically it caused the internet to NOT time out, but hold on, and when the signal got back, the network was already there in full swing and never missed a full step.

now at this time i need an apk that will do the same.
when my phone is being hit with extreme network drop & reset i need to NOT have my phone resend ALLLLL the data a billi-trillion times.
just stay steady, and be smooth.

problem is i can not find such an apk, and life is miserable.

someone pleas tell me how to change the timeout, or where is a foss apk that is not a hacker honeypot that will do this connection stabilization. pleas. f-droid is an example of happy go download
while g09l3 is absolutely not an option

thank you for your synapses expenditure

DNC panel recommends redo of vote that elevated David Hogg to vice chair after procedural concerns

A Democratic National Committee subcommittee on Monday recommended that the organization invalidate one of its February vice-chair votes over claims that it unfairly disadvantaged female candidates.

The move, which won't be official unless the entire DNC votes to approve it, could open up new races for the positions held by David Hogg, a Florida activist, and Malcolm Kenyatta, a Pennsylvania state legislator.

The challenge by Oklahoma Democratic Committeewoman Kalyn Free, who unsuccessfully ran against Hogg and Kenyatta in the February race for vice chair, is not related to the ongoing tension between Hogg and the national party over his push to support primary challenges against incumbent Democrats.

Instead, it was based off Free's claim that the handling of the vice-chair vote gave the two men an unfair advantage amid the national party's requirements that its executive committee achieve gender balance.

Pubblicato a un mese di distanza da pubblicazioni di successo simili come The Shins (Wincing the Night Away) e Modest Mouse (We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank), Neon Bible è stato citato come esempio di popolarizzazione dell'indie rock.

The USSR didn't have any limits to choosing an employment since shortly after WW2, what are you talking about? By the late 70s, around 10% of positions in the economy were vacant and there was full employment, and people weren't forced to work anywhere. The average unemployment duration was 15 days.

Please, what's your source on your claim?

in reply to AES_Enjoyer

Come on man it took one google search to read about the centralized labour programs, liquidation of foreign ethnic groups, and militarization of labour. This isn’t even counting the estimated 10 million or so people in forced labour gulags.
in reply to AES_Enjoyer

The USSR didn’t have any limits to choosing an employment

You were distributed to a place by the state after finishing your education. If you left that place too soon, you'd be frowned upon and that'd be mirrored in your labor book (USSR had such a document, basically a dossier documenting your whole history of employment with characteristics, you could get such a "flattering" characteristic by a superior not liking you that you'd never be accepted to a good place after, and you couldn't refuse or lose a record in your labor book).

and people weren’t forced to work anywhere.

Being unemployed for too long was literally, seriously, illegal in the USSR. Google for "тунеядство".

People with something really bad in their labor books (say, dissidents) or some other necessary documents (being German after the war, being Jewish in a wrong period of time) had problems finding a place that would accept them, and would sometimes be prosecuted for being unemployed (that was usually informal employment, because you still had to eat something).

But in general yes, some kind of employment was always possible. Dying from hunger or being homeless was almost ruled out. Most of the population lived in some sort of "acceptable poverty" - conditions very bad by US measure, but with the previous correction. That's sort of one good thing that most people from ex-USSR agree on.

in reply to AES_Enjoyer

So if I wanted to change jobs or quit a job to go into higher education, do you know if that was possible, how hard was it to do? Because available positions does not equal job mobility, as you need permission from the factory manager and the state and those are harder to get when qualified workers are scarce.

Cash is disappearing in Gaza

But in Gaza today, cash has all but disappeared. Aside from the brief ceasefire interlude that started in January and Israel ended on 19 March, when some cash aid was delivered by international organizations, no cash had entered Gaza for 15 months prior and none since.

In the first three months alone after October 2023, according to the World Bank, Israel destroyed or damaged 93 percent of all bank branches.

With no banks and only the cash that was already there – so overused by now that it is starting to disintegrate – Palestinians in Gaza have had to improvise.

Digital transactions have eased some of the pressure, while bartering has become common.

'We're testing for testing's sake' - new maths tests fail to make the grade for principals

The government is "testing children to death" with the announcement of a new maths test for the youngest children, says the head of the Principals Federation.

Next week's Budget will include $4 million to develop and introduce a "maths check" for children in their first two years of schooling.

"Yes, it gives us information, but teachers will be able to tell you that they already know which children need that extra support. They don't need a test to tell them that so what is this test for, who is this test for, is what I will be asking. We've now got a phonics test for literacy in Year 1. We've now got a numeracy test in Year 2. We're testing our kids to death here."

When government's have introduced compulsory testing in primary school, overseas statistics show there have been negative unintended consequences, Pomeroy told Morning Report.

I have some quotes out of order as the article is discussing two things. Here is the second:

It also announced $56m over four years to employ the equivalent of 143 full-time maths intervention teachers to help primary school children who were struggling with the subject, and $40m over four years for small group maths tutoring for up to 34,000 children in Year 7-8 each year.

Otene said principals would welcome the funding for expert teachers, provided they targeted the children who were furthest behind in maths - those classed as "tier three" meaning they needed support from externally-sourced specialists.

"We need that intervention support. But I'm really hoping that that's not just for tier two students... we need desperately learning support for those children who are 'well below'," she said.

Otene said the funding for tutoring at intermediate schools was premature because it extended a pilot scheme that had not yet been assessed.

"I'm a bit concerned that the minister does not have evidence to support the extending of that," she said.

Your tab just crashed.“… ma persino i browser Chromium stavolta. 💥
💖💣, [12/05/2025 02:48]ma le schede di firefox che crashano perché mi si riempie la RAM o qualcosa del genere?💖💣, [12/05/2025 22:56]esploderà PC[...], [12/05/2025 23:08]Computboom💖💣, [13/05/2025 00:54]questa mi è nuova"parte di questa pagina è crashata"[Part of this page crashed. The following programs consumed the most virtual memory: firefox.exe (19540) consumed 2499989504 bytes, firefox.exe (13344) consumed 1248677888 bytes, and firefox.exe (1416) consumed 1031213056 bytes.

Market Structure Rules for Crypto Could End Up Governing Core of U.S. Finance: Le

... [crypto] sector veteran and compliance expert TuongVy Le, a former Securities and Exchange Commission lawyer, argues that what Congress and the regulators are working on isn't just for today's digital assets space but for the core of the future financial system.

Le, who has held top legal and regulator positions at Anchorage Digital, Bain Capital and the former Worldcoin (now World Network), told CoinDesk that she expects the new rules coming to her old regulatory employer will eventually govern the business at the heart of the markets. Migrating the securities and commodities transactions in traditional finance onto the blockchain is a dramatic move for a field that's been stuck in a legacy approach to handling transactions, rooted in lengthy clearing and settlement approaches established decades ago.

...

She's so far been impressed with the changes congressional lawmakers have made in the latest discussion draft of the market-structure bill that is built on the back of the previous session's Financial Innovation and Technology for the 21st Century Act (FIT21), calling it "much more practical, workable and streamlined." She praised its approach to getting multiple types of transactions under the reach of single trading platforms and also its views on blockchain maturity.

She said that the legislation underway in Congress right now will be a "huge unlock" for the industry, but the U.S. financial agencies, including the SEC and Commodity Futures Trading Commission, are already moving.

New York Mayor Eric Adams to Crypto Industry: Come Build an Empire in NYC

“This is the Empire State,” Adams said at a press briefing at Gracie Mansion on Monday. “We should be looking forward to building empires, particularly in the crypto space.”

Adams, who is running for reelection, reiterated his commitment to making New York City a crypto hub, telling reporters that he would work with tech and crypto companies, both big and small, to create a friendly environment to attract them and help them succeed.

“My goal remains the same as it was on day one as mayor: making New York City the crypto capital of the globe,” Adams said. His remarks echo similar pledges from President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly said he wants to make the U.S. the “crypto capital of the planet.”
