Magnetic cable just catched on fire while being tester under nominal load

I knew that those cables were shady, but this result was actually surprising. It really went out with full fireworks.

Let me know what you think, but this cable straight up melted and catched on fire after being put up to its nominal power.

US energy officials have found unexplained communication equipment inside some Chinese-made inverter devices.

Reuters reported the presence of undocumented and “rogue” communication devices in a number of Chinese-made solar inverters. These could potentially introduce unregulated and undocumented remote communication channels to the inverters, by which an actor could remotely bypass the cybersecurity firewalls that utility companies use to prevent direct communication back to China.

The worst part is that Nextcloud isn’t even really in competition with Google. Setting up a Nextcloud server isn’t hard, but it’s not a trivial task. Sharing it outside your local network also requires a bit of skill, especially if done securely. That is to say, Nextcloud users probably tend to be more tech-savvy.

That's only true for those who self-host this. There are lots of companies offering Nextcloud hosting. That's probably why Google doesn't like Nextcloud. I'm not saying Google is right. Actually what Google is doing here is quite pathetic.

in reply to 486

There are lots of businesses hosting their own nextcloud as well, this is a serious problem for them.

College Degree

"These jobs are below me! They should belong to the peasants!"
in reply to Damage

These people are the "peasants" or close enough the distinction doesn't matter. We were all told the way to move up was to go to college pay all that tuition and you'll more than make it up longterm. If you end up working min wage stuff anyway it's better to just do it out of high-school. The warehouse guy probably makes decent but is also working shit hours and slowly destroying his body, again something college is supposed to help you avoid.
in reply to phdepressed

Yeah but a degree is not a get-out-of-shit-job-free card... We all have to take what the market offers, or get creative, start a business, etc.

And it's not like people without degrees don't put effort into improving their skills.

As long as the majority of people can just forget unpleasant jobs exists and leave them to the less fortunate, the incentive to make them less shitty is weak.

in reply to Damage

I firmly believe we all should take turns doing the shit jobs so that some are spared from having to do it all the time.

The CEO should spend a few hours a week scrubbing toilets. Citizens should go on say, a two-year tour of duty in their young years to do the stuff depicted in the comic. A benefit is that they'll treat service workers better later in life.

And more importantly, we should question how much of this is actually necessary. It seems all most of it does is make a couple people rich beyond morality.

If AI is so good at coding … where are the open source contributions?

in reply to David Gerard

Coding is hard, and its also intimidating for non-coders. I always used to look at coders as kind of a different kind of human, a special breed. Just like some people just glaze over when you bring up math concepts but are otherwise very intelligent and artistic, but they can't bridge that gap when you bring up even algebra. Well, if you are one of those people that want to learn coding its a huge gap, and the LLMs can literally explain everything to you step by step like you are 5. Learning to code is so much easier now, talking to an always helpful LLM is so much better than forums or stack overflow. Maybe it will create millions of crappy coders, but some of them will get better, some will get great. But the LLM's will make it possible for more people to learn, which means that my crypto scam now has the chance to flourish.
in reply to 🍪CRUMBGRABBER🍪

tbh learning to code isn't that hard, its like learning to do a craft.

Wait, just finished reading your comment, disregard this.

Bing Search and Bing Custom Search APIs will be retired on 11th August 2025.

This is a very low-information announcement here but if this is taken to the extreme, it means that DuckDuckGo, Qwant, and many other so-called "alternative" search engines are going to either have to look for a new provider of results, or die.
in reply to Swuden

I did not know this. I find duckduckgo to be more useful than Google most times now. It's crazy how bad Google has become.
in reply to mechoman444

Qwant is also good. And it's building their own index together with Ecosia.

AI Could Be the Most Effective Tool for Dismantling Democracy Ever Invented

AI Could Be the Most Effective Tool for Dismantling Democracy Ever Invented

in reply to fruitycoder

There's a lot you can do, actually. You can put people in jail, for one. Possession in non-designated areas, such as a construction site or a personal residence, could lead to confiscation and a misdemeanor. It can just be socially impolite to have one around people—you know, like your car keys are after you've been drinking.

The chasm of understanding is that you don't want to do anything—literally anything—about abuse in your society.

And for what? So that chatgpt can give you advice on what to order next from your burrito taxi? So that you don't have to go through the pain of writing a long email to your boss that he's going to summarize with the same AI service anyway?

I don't think being able to generate funny looking pictures is worth letting Palantir, another pet project of the vampire Peter Thiel, create a nightmare social-credit system actually worthy of 1984 to deter union advocacy, palastinian-genocide protest, being remotely anti-Trump—anything found disagreeable to the state—from ever realistically happening again. In all countries, mind you.

We can't do anything about that?

...

You know what else we can't do anything about? Global Warming. When the water wars finally kill us, I suppose I'll come greet you in hell.

in reply to petrol_sniff_king

You seem to think we disagree on creation of a police state or massive surveillance system being a bad thing for some reason. None of which are stopped with regulations by the states that are funding and building said things ...

Palantir CEO Alex Karp praises Saudi engineers and takes a swipe at Europe, saying it has 'given up' on AI

"Obviously, the great contradistinction here is Europe, where, you know, it's like people have given up, and we — I really hope that turns around in Europe," he added.

Europe is giving up by having ethical, human focused, and probably open source AI/and not firing all their scientists and researchers? Meanwhile the GOP is literally trying to sneak language into a spending bill banning regulation for a decade?

What a pizza shit.

2 more Fetterman aides leave embattled senator’s office

Two more aides left John Fetterman’s office in recent weeks, the latest in a stream of staff exits amid the Pennsylvania senator’s shifting political persona and questions about his health.

Fetterman aides Madeleine Marr and Caroline Shaffer parted ways with his team, according to two people familiar with their departures and granted anonymity to speak freely. They left shortly before New York Magazine reported that current and former Fetterman staff are increasingly concerned about the Democratic senator’s mental and physical health, one of the people said.

Staff inside Fetterman’s office had been bracing for the magazine’s story in the days before it was published. Fetterman has denied that he is not fit to serve, calling the report “a one-source hit piece.”

On this day in 1985, Philadelphia police bombed a home occupied by the black liberation group MOVE and let the fire burn out of control - "let the fire burn" - killing five children and six adults, and destroying 65 homes. No charges were filed.

The standoff with MOVE, a black liberation organization, was initiated by the police in an attempt to serve an eviction notice. Eleven people, including five children, died in the fire.

Eyewitnesses claimed that the victims were prevented from fleeing the fire by police gunfire upon escape. Police Commissioner Sambor infamously ordered the fire department to "let the fire burn", destroying 65 nearby homes comprising two city blocks.

Although an investigation found that the law enforcement and fire department actions were negligent, no criminal charges were filed.

In October 2013, a documentary about the stand-off and bombing titled "Let the Fire Burn" was released by Zeitgeist Films.
