Sabrina Carpenter taps Spinal Tap cover.

Don't give Trump what he wants

For the protests Trump is hoping for one of two outcomes:

  1. The protests escalate and he seizes power just like Hitler did: theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…
  2. People roll over, stay silent and comply with the administration out of fear.

If fact I wonder if #1 would be more ideal for Trump because it would be a unifying cause for Republicans who are currently divided and soon face economic uncertainty. Remember that Trump's polling was worst in April during times of greatest economic uncertainty. However let's not give him either of those. Let's humiliate Trump by making all the people he brought in, in hopes of escalating useless and bored. Imagine the pictures of them standing around with nothing to do. It will foil the well used dictator playbook for seizing power.

The reality is a vast, vast majority of the protests are going to be peaceful no matter what. The problem is that the media even the mainstream media will focus on any violence there is so we need we really need to be as perfect as we can so let's do everything we can to ensure that every single protest remains as peaceful as possible and also take charge of the narrative too.

What we need to do is protest peacefully and lawfully, be a little more spread out, stay away from situations that are violent. I'd also recommend staying away from police and military. Use the time to expose Trump's corruption and educate people and bring new people to the movement and maybe even help register people to vote. By building a broad peaceful coalition we can reach even those who are stuck in echo chambers where they will only see what little violence there is and not notice the peaceful protests. The only way to break through is to protest peacefully in your city so they can see that protests are peaceful or get previously neutral people involved in protesting who will talk to their friends who will in-turn talk to their friends and so on eventually reaching those in echo chambers.

I'd recommend bringing American flags, say we love our country, we believe ALL Americans have equal rights and that we support the constitution and upholding American tradition like separation of power, that no one is above the law and that there are no kings in America. The more people who do that the more chances the media will be forced to show this which disrupts the false narrative that we're not patriotic, in fact I feel we're way more patriotic than the people who still worship traitors like the confederates, those who want to destroy our country and those who feel that only Americans who have the right skin color, gender and socioeconomic status deserve rights.

Online and in person we must strongly push back against those who call for violence, balkanization or civil war. These things will be devastating to everyone. I can tell you that I'm a blue dot in a red state, I have lots of friends and family members who are as well. Nearly all of us are too poor and too deeply rooted in our communities to move. This could literally be deadly for us and millions of innocent people who don't support what's going on now and even if not deadly lots of us could one day be subject to a oppressive regime in a spin-off of part of America, that would be horrible. If we make it to the midterms we can win enough elections and make our country better in all 50 states peacefully and legally.

Remember: broad peaceful coalition, bring more and more people over, eventually even some Trump supporters will see the light and we'll resolve this peacefully. I know we can do it!

PS: Hands-off put together a list of articles about de-escalation training here: actionnetwork.org/user_files/u…

The YouTube link in the PDF wasn't stripped of tracking so use this link to watch their de-escalation training: youtu.be/_Pgmn9QRr48

I also saw an interesting idea of having monitors in high visibility vests and using whistles whenever they see even initial signs of violence, in the original suggestion they advised sitting but I read some persuasive comments that mentioned sitting down could be dangerous, instead I think leaving is the best approach.

I thought they hopped on trumps post truth wagon and removed all the fact checkers, why are they making a fuzz about this specific topic?
in reply to Jeena

It (nudify) makes AI look bad and is the leading example people are using when proposing legislation to regulate AI. If they can end this prominent thing, not only do they look like they're fighting for the users, but they help keep the gvmt from meddling with whatever henious shit they want to do with AI (by removing the best argument the pro-regulation groups have right now)

This is a case where every other organism on earth, except for maybe the junk bug, looks at humans with a confused air of disdain. Like, why did you manufacture this intractable problem by mandating clothing and shaming nudity in the first place?
in reply to Gordon Calhoun

Like, why did you manufacture this intractable problem by mandating clothing and shaming nudity in the first place?

You think humans invented clothing because of shame?

That's completely backwards, we invented clothing for protection, and not seeing everything all the time led to shame when someone could see us.

Like, I'm pretty sure hermit crabs feel something similar to shame when they don't have a shell, they need something to drive them to not only protect themselves, but to ensure they can reproduce and raise their young. That's why humans instinctually get weird about exposed genitals and boobs, those are the most important parts of a human from an evolutionary perspective.

I get what you're trying to say, it's just you're going about it completely backwards

Nah, I get that exposed flesh isn't always comfortable or safe and the practical solution is to just steal the skin of some other animal (or convert crude oil into super soft knit fabrics). I'm just of the personal mindset that if someone is comfortable enough in their own skin that they are completely fine going about their business in the buff, that the rest of society shouldn't lose its shit and just be like, "k whatever u do u naked person wear sunblock."
in reply to Gordon Calhoun

That is my culture. Why do you have so little respect for my culture as to think I should follow your values?

I have seen variations of this debate in letters from around 100. I'm sure it goes back much farther.

in reply to bluGill

Culture is just that which a group says/does. If you value the well-being of humans then you can evaluate if an action is good or not. "Respect" of culture need not come into the solution of how best it is to act.

European ISPs Complain About 'Disproportionate' Pirate Site Blocking

Internet providers are increasingly tasked in the role of anti-piracy enforcers and instructed to block pirate websites and services. In Europe, court-ordered blockades are now commonplace, but ISPs are cautious when it comes to further expansion. In a recent submission to the EU Commission, EuroISPA, which represents over 3,300 ISPs, complains about "disproportionate" blocking measures, as recently seen in Italy, Spain and elsewhere.
in reply to 0x0

That urgency of blocking websites should be used to take down CSAM and truly dangerous content, not piracy imo. But they only care about money as usual.
in reply to RiQuY

lets be honest; some of the biggest proponents of csam are executives in boardrooms of major media companies.

“Pick a Lie, Any Lie”: Israel’s Five Versions of the Witkoff Massacre

The Israeli army has offered five conflicting stories to deny its role in the killing of 31 starving civilians and the injury of over 200 others at the US-Israeli aid distribution point in Rafah. The massacre, known as the Witkoff Massacre, has triggered global outrage.

  • Narrative 1: “Nothing happened.”

Initially, Israel claimed that no incident occurred near the aid center. This was quickly disproven by eyewitness videos and images showing bodies scattered near aid trucks.

  • Narrative 2: “Something happened—but not near the aid center.”

After mounting pressure, the army admitted there had been an incident. However, it claimed the event happened far from the aid site and had no connection to Israeli forces. The army then released a video showing normal aid distribution in a different area.

  • Narrative 3: “Soldiers fired in the air only.”

The third claim was that Israeli soldiers fired warning shots into the air, not at people. This contradicted medical reports and survivor testimonies that confirmed victims had direct gunshot wounds to the head, chest, and abdomen.

  • Narrative 4: “No one was hurt.”

In its fourth version, the army insisted that no casualties resulted from the incident. But the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) later confirmed that 21 dead bodies had arrived at its field hospital in Rafah.

  • Narrative 5: “Hamas militants were responsible.”

Finally, Israel published a drone video claiming Hamas fighters shot civilians. However, the footage was filmed in Khan Younis—not Rafah—and showed looting by gangs backed by Israel. The clip lacked any evidence of a gunfight.

Rami Abdu, director of Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, called the video “a scandal.” He said, “The footage showed gangs stealing aid, not Hamas shooting civilians. Israel is trying to hide its crime with lies.”

Internet Blackout in Gaza as Israel Targets Last Fiber Line

Gaza (Quds News Network)- The Gaza Strip has plunged into a complete internet and communication blackout after Israeli attacks severed the last remaining fiber-optic line, the Palestinian Telecommunications Regulatory Authority announced on Thursday.

The authority confirmed that fixed-line internet and telecommunication services are now entirely cut off across Gaza, including the central and southern regions, which have now joined the digital silence already imposed on Gaza City and the north for the past two days.

“This is the result of systematic attacks on Gaza’s already fragile telecom infrastructure,” the authority said in a statement. Technicians have tried multiple times to repair and reroute damaged lines, but Israeli restrictions have blocked all efforts.

"Can't wait for summer!!"Also me all summerVabbè, in sintesi ho il presentimento che in parte questa possa essere l’estate. 🙏

Liberals will be blaming him for their losses for decades to come.

It just worked.

I've felt compelled to post; it just works!

I've got a pc which is over a decade old; I've only ever used Microsoft with my main OS on that machine being windows 7 and then windows 10.
With the new requirements for windows 11 being what they were I was considering installing it anyway with some workarounds.
My computer appeared to be getting slower, I was annoyed with all of the bloat which goes along with the Microsoft OS, the constant reminders to "finish setting up my device" and use one drive. All of this was a bit too much for me.

I figured I'd have a go at installing a Linux OS. I'd ran Ubuntu years and years ago as an experiment on an evening older pc and it was very much sub par, it looked nice, it was a pain to do anything and didn't play any of the games I wanted at the time.

A little bit of research told me that Linux mint may be a good option. I also read that dual booting can be difficult. So I just backed up my data, and installed it on the hard disk.

It was mostly seamless, I had issues with my graphics driver, which meant I couldn't click the buttons to install mint & crashes, when running off the live disk to see what the os was like. This was part of the reason I just installed it on the hard drive and didn't go through with a 'testing' phase.

Once that was resolved by installing the Nvidia driver I could use mint. This was made quite easy as it was just a few clicks in the gui and made really obvious to see. And the Mint does everything I need it to!

Gaming appears to have come a long, long way, I ran Civ V to test and it worked.

My Bluetooth mouse and keyboard connected without issue.

The libre office suite is great to use and I've found it similar to the Microsoft equivalents.

My computer appears to be faster. I now realise that it was actually just the additional demands of the Microsoft OS on my machine which slowed it.

I have a multi screen set up, this simply just worked, the only tweek I made was selecting my main monitor.

To top it all, and perhaps the most surprising thing for me (and the reason for the post) is the printer just worked. Like, printers never just work. It's just plugged in, recognised and I could print. No additional set up needed.

I'm short, Linux has progressed so much over the years. I thank all those who have worked on it to make it such a great option. It will be my main OS going forward and I'll advocate for it. I'll also ensure that my kids are running a Linux OS when they have computers of their own.

So, if you're reading this and unsure about Linux, don't be. It's great and easy to set up, works flawlessly.

in reply to Good_Slate

I have a Lenovo Legion 5 Pro with an RTX3060. When Linux can run 2D graphic animations in browsers with more than 5fps I'll switch, but it just doesn't work.

It may have come a long way, but let's not pretend it's flawless.

in reply to sykaster

I run the same laptop with the same card, doing heavy work in blender and 3d games on Linux. What are you talking about?
in reply to Ludrol

3D graphics worked out of the box, but the 2D animations in the browser on any browser, any distro, any driver are super low FPS. I feel like I've tried everything and I cannot solve this. What's your distro?
in reply to sykaster

I now run bazzite but arch and ubuntu worked good enough for me, definitely no 5fps choppines in the UI.
in reply to Ludrol

I tried all of those, same issue on all of them on Brave, Chromium, and Firefox. I've given up hope for now, maybe with the next laptop.
in reply to sykaster

I have a laptop with a 3060 and I don't have this issue.

Ok, but there is something here. in 99% percent everything works fine but when @sykaster@feddit.nl and I go to survev.io/ the performance is awful. Tested both on X11 and Wayland.

Iran Vows To Respond After IAEA Passes Noncompliance Resolution

The International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) Board of Governors has passed a resolution formally declaring Iran noncompliant with its nonproliferation obligations for the first time since 2005, a move Tehran immediately condemned.

The resolution, which was adopted on June 12 during a quarterly meeting of the IAEA board, can facilitate the return of UN sanctions against Iran later this year.

In response, Iran's Foreign Ministry announced that a new enrichment site would be established in a safe zone and first-generation centrifuges in the Fordo site will be replaced with advanced sixth-generation machines.

"As we have previously stated, the Islamic Republic of Iran has no choice but to respond to this political resolution," the ministry said in a statement.

I say this as a massive AI critic: Disney does not have a legitimate grievance here.

AI training data is scraping. Scraping is — and must continue to be — fair use. As Cory Doctorow (fellow AI critic) says: Scraping against the wishes of the scraped is good, actually.

I want generative AI firms to get taken down. But I want them to be taken down for the right reasons.

Their products are toxic to communication and collaboration.

They are the embodiment of a pathology that sees humanity — what they might call inefficiency, disagreement, incoherence, emotionality, bias, chaos, disobedience — as a problem, and technology as the answer.

Dismantle them on the basis of what their poison does to public discourse, shared knowledge, connection to each other, mental well-being, fair competition, privacy, labor dignity, and personal identity.

Not because they didn’t pay the fucking Mickey Mouse toll.

in reply to kibiz0r

Are you saying that the mere action of scraping is fair use, or that absolutely anything you do with the data you scrape is also fair use?
in reply to Pro

Oh so when Big companies do it, it's OK. But it's stealing when an OpenSource AI gives that same power back to the people.

Israeli army officers refuse to serve in ‘unnecessary, eternal war’ in Gaza; say many hostages have been killed by IDF bombings

Israel’s government is issuing “clearly illegal” orders that must not be obeyed, a group of Israeli military intelligence officers have said, announcing they will no longer participate in combat operations in Gaza.

The intelligence officers said Netanyahu’s government had given a “death sentence” to the Israeli hostages held by Hamas militants in Gaza when it “chose to collapse” the ceasefire deal in March.

The group, which is understood to include members of the elite military surveillance division Unit 8200, claimed that “many hostages have already been killed by IDF bombings” and accused the government of continuing to “abandon their lives”.

Organised by the anti-war group Soldiers for the Hostages, the letter comes amid growing dissent within certain parts of the military over the continuation of the war in Gaza and an apparent increase in the numbers of soldiers who are refusing to fight.

in reply to geneva_convenience

Even when protesting the war they only care about their hostages.

Not saying they shouldn't care about them, but deliberately only caring about them and not the tens of thousands of Palestinian women and children they murdered speaks volumes.
