Zohran Mamdani’s Messaging Machine Is a Model to Emulate

New York City socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani has clearly learned from other effective communicators like Bernie Sanders how to use online media to spread popular left-wing ideas. Mamdani’s approach is a model for other insurgent candidates.

Veterans Are Ramping Up Protests Against VA Cuts

The Trump administration wants to cut more than 80,000 VA jobs this year and further privatize veterans’ health care. Last week’s D-Day anniversary saw the biggest veteran mobilizations yet against Trump’s cuts to veterans’ benefits.

Stardeus spaceship colony game started a free play weekend.

Pretty fun colony/resource game. It's a nice twist that you actually play as the computer in the ship instead of some ethereal colony director. Though it's pretty easy to start seeing your colonists as resources instead of beings you are supposed to protect, especially if you install the Asimov override chip..

I'm a big fan of this one. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes Rimworld, Dwarf Fortress, Space Haven etc. Seems to be in committed and constant development for both content and bugfixes.

Global oil prices soar after Israel attacks Iran

in reply to davel

Iran may close the Strait of Hormuz, while Yemen could shut the Bab al-Mandeb.

That would destabilize global energy markets in a hurry, and the west would go into economic tailspin as a result.

Why don't most distros support listing packages and system settings in text file(s)?

I think the least that distros can do, is allow listing all packages and system settings in config files like .toml rather than having to type in every single package to install, or click through system setting GUIs to setup. Would that require using a whole programming language or system like NIx?

While NixOS works much differently from most distros, that's the only reason I use it: package and system settings in text files. If I fix something, it's fixed permanently, I don't need to hunt down files in random directories if I want to change a setting. If I ever need to reinstall the OS I don't have to write dnf install every single damn package and manually setup all that up all over again. Having daily-drove Windows macOS & Fedora as throughout the years, my setups have felt hacky as well as houses of cards as I've wanted or had to set them up again (I don't mean Fedora specifically, but distros in general).

Basically it feels insane that it's the way most linux users and servers in the world operate. If I, a humble computer hobbyist can figure out Nix, why don't more users do so, and why is Nix so niche?

in reply to TheTwelveYearOld

I'm sure many people don't even think about that. Having to reinstall all your packages from scratch is not something they do frequently.

And for the people who are looking to optimize the initial setup, there are many ways to do it without a declarative package manager. You can:
- Write a script for your initial setup that includes installing packages
- Use a tool like ansible
- Use meta-packages
- Export your currently installed packages to a file and pass that to the package manager on the new installation

I'd have to also back up /etc/apt/preferences.d

Much easier to just copy and paste a block of commands when I get a VPS up

There's no FOSS app that does this unfortunately.

A poem of freedom

I wasn’t born to obey.
Not to swallow smiling lies, not to clap for tyrants in suits, not to say “thank you” for surveillance wrapped in convenience.

I see it.
The games.
The false choice.
The fear pumped through headlines and dopamine apps.
I see how they trade truth for comfort, freedom for filters, soul for clickbait.

They call it normal.
But I call it a graveyard made of compliance.

They want me silent.
They want me tired.
They want me posting selfies while the world burns behind the screen.

But I wasn’t born for this.

I was born to question, to remember, to remind the others who are still pretending they don’t notice.

So here I am.
A voice with no logo.
A signal in the static.
A crack in the mirror they polish every morning.

You don’t have to agree.
You don’t have to clap.
But if this made your bones ache or your thoughts twitch

Then maybe you’re not asleep either.

Good.

Let’s stay awake.
And let’s make noise that can’t be sold, silenced, or spun into safety.

Not for them.

For us.

US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee said in an interview yesterday that Israel was unlikely to attack Iran without a green light from Washington.

I think Huckabee is accidentally giving away the game here and that he was not lying, Israel would not do this without approval and implicit support from the US. We'll just have to see what happens after Iran inevitably responds in kind.

Influential commentator Tucker Carlson urges Trump to ‘drop’ Israel

Carlson has been a leading voice within right-wing circles calling for Trump to avoid being dragged to war with Iran by Israel.

After Israel attacked Iran, the talk-show host, who spoke at the Republican National Convention last year, said the US should not support Netanyahu’s “war-hungry government” in the conflict.

“If Israel wants to wage this war, it has every right to do so. It is a sovereign country, and it can do as it pleases. But not with America’s backing,” the Tucker Carlson Network morning newsletter read.

It added that a war with Iran could “fuel the next generation of terrorism” or lead to the killing of thousands of Americans in the name of a foreign agenda.

“It goes without saying that neither of those possibilities would be beneficial for the United States,” the newsletter said. “But there is another option: drop Israel. Let them fight their own wars.”

What other browsers block the extraction of canvas data?

On Librewolf, I've been getting this warning on tracking websites like Discord and IG(from when I was in the process of deleting them).

I'm not sure why I never got these warnings on other browsers like Firefox or Waterfox.

US to order 500,000 citizens of four countries to leave

Hundreds of thousands of immigrants who were given special permission to come to the US will be told that they must leave the country immediately.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in a statement Thursday that Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans who were previously temporarily shielded from deportation will be emailed notices telling them to go.

The DHS said that more than half a million people from the four countries were allowed to remain in the US for two years under orders issued by Joe Biden.

Linux won't boot, looking for help

Hey there. I’m totally new to Linux. I’m not the most tech savvy, but I’m fed up with windows and want to go elsewhere. For the time being I figured I’d dual boot, and got everything set up on a usb. I plugged it in, booted up Linux Mint, and it worked smoothly. I ended the session, powered off my pc, removed the usb, booted up windows 11, freed up some disc space and did some other stuff on my computer, then turned it off for a bit. When I went to boot it up again, I got this message:

Failed to open \EFI\B00T\mmx64.efi - Not Found Failed to load image ??: Not Found Failed to start MokManager: Not Found
Something has gone seriously wrong: import mok-state() failed: Not Found

and then the computer powered off. I tried disabling fast start or whatever it’s called, as well as secure boot, and it’s still giving me that. Windows still boots up just fine. Does anyone have any advice? Like I said I don’t have much technical knowledge so a dumbed down response would be really appreciated. I’ve looked up a few forums and nothing gave me much.

Oh also, when I try to boot it and it gives me the error and turns off, if I turn it back on but boot up windows, I get a message saying something was blocked due to a security system I have to disable, but doesn’t tell me what that security system is or how to disable it. It’s getting a little frustrating. I don’t know why it worked once but not anymore.

Update: I got it working. Thanks everyone for the help.

When you freed up the disk space windows seems to have broken mints bootloader partition. You could fix it if you wanted, but at beginner level its probably best to reinstall. If you need to recover any data from you "broken" mint partition you can plug the mint USB in, boot into the live environment and look in your files mount you old mint files and backup anything you want to keep before reinstalling.

Depends on how much of a nerd you are. If the idea of rescuing your system using the terminal sounds fun then try otherwise just reinstall.

Windowt is notorious for "accidentally" screwing up dual boot setups by writing over the files Linux needs to boot.

Open Source CAD In The Browser

The project’s GitHub repository shows an impressive slate of features, but also notes that things are changing as this is alpha software. The CAD kernel is a common one brought in via WebAssembly, so there shouldn’t be many simple bugs involving geometry.

We’ve seen a number of browser-based tools that do some kind of CAD. CADmium is a recent entry into the list. Or, stick with OpenSCAD. We sometimes go low-tech for schematics.

Is there a quick way to know which instance might need mods?

As per title.
I've been wondering about this. How can we help when someone managing a community/instance can't find help locally, for whatever reason? Something like an "help wanted" board. Even if it's for one month, three months, etc.

I've been an admin for a 8-9k+ users Discord server for years, but I love Lemmy so much I'd like to see if I can be somehow useful here. I don't think I'm power tripping at all, but have zero tolerance for harassment, racism or sexism, bigotry and honestly want to keep neocons and bigots/trolls out of Lemmy as long as it's humanly possible. Whenever in doubt, I generally abstain from using any moderation power and talk with other mods/users to find the best course of action.

The situation I imagined in the first paragraph did happen to me. Managing the server alone was draining my mental health, and I couldn't find anyone to help with all I had to do. Then someone wrote to me, we had lengthy discussions about the rules and philosophy of the server and we've been co-managing it together for years. Lemm.ee closing down made me think about "how to help where and when it's needed"?

I'm posting in this community in hope that other users may be wondering about it and may find any answer useful.

[Multiple edits, original post written quite late, judging from most replies, I failed to phrase correctly what I had in mind]

Thank you for offering, some communities might ask you for help!

Personally I tend to try to find active members who are known to be positive in the community before reaching out to them and offering them a mod position. It's easier for them to mod if they're already invested in the community.

in reply to Blaze (he/him)

I suppose that's the best way indeed. But I thought it wouldn't hurt, in cases where no one could be found, for people who are slowly burning out to know that others may be available for helping, even for a small time, while they recover !
