I have to say, this is just such an in-the-weeds moral stance that it crosses the boundary of reasonableness. Honestly, it's this sort of thing that drove me away from left wing styles of thinking a while ago.
The impact you make on the world in any of your possible actions with regard to Harry Potter is miniscule. Like, truly, utterly insignificant. Are you going to organize an anti-potter boycott? Participate in a protest? Harass the actors in an online trolling movement? Throw eggs at JK Rawling's house? Great! Go do all those things! Actively participate in changing the world for the better! These actions might actually lead to real change.
But denying yourself pleasures in the name of moral purity accomplishes nothing. If all you do is sit at home and think to yourself "I wanna watch the new Harry Potter thing, but I can't, because then I'm a bad person." (or in this case, "I wanna talk to my friends about the new Harry Potter thing I pirated, but I can't, because then I'm a bad person) then you are accomplishing literally nothing except making yourself miserable. Again, if you are going to actually do something, then go do it! But if you don't have the time or energy or interest or social battery to actually do something, then shaming yourself or others into not doing things is actively counterproductive. Go take a road trip without calculating if the pleasure you will derive is worth the carbon footprint! Eat an ice cream cone without feeling bad about the the suffering of the factory farmed cow it came from! Get one of those good-paying jobs in oil and gas or defence and make some goddamned money! You are simply not important enough for any of these actions to have any actual real-world impact. The only thing that happens is that you convince yourself that if you ever enjoy anything, then you are a bad person. You train yourself to constantly be looking for the ways in which life's simple pleasures are destroying the world, so you can feel bad about them.
Just stop it. Be happy. Do whatever you need to do to chill out and enjoy your life and gain some sense of contentedness and security. And then go out and make the world a better place by actually doing something. Hyper-anxious, shame-ridden, depressed know-it-alls rarely create effective social change because no one wants to hang out with them. No one see them and thinks "yeah, that's what I want my life to look like."

Qualche ora fa, semplicemente accendendo il PC, ho involontariamente e accidentalmente (perché non lo stavo affatto cercando, e perché la situazione per cui questa cosa è possibile è parecchio problematica sotto tutti gli altri punti di vista) scoperto un modo per bloccare permanentemente gli aggiornamenti automatici di Windows… senza smanettare, senza fare cose strane, senza nemmeno essere un amministratore del sistema. Per l’appunto, non era mia intenzione bloccare gli aggiornamenti, ma a quanto pare questo è esattamente cosa succede quando il disco C: è pieno quasi fino all’orlo (nonché quando è pieno fino all’ultimo byte, ma in quello stato non funzionano bene neanche le app, quindi sarebbe ovvio). 💣 Ecco qua: avvio il PC, in cui la mia partizione C: ha appena 1 GB e mezzo di spazio libero, ed esce questo bel messaggio a schermo (ambiguo come al solito sul momento, ma cliccando Maggiori informazioni si capisce subito tutto)… perché ops, alla Microsoft non bastano 1 miliardo e passa di byte (!) per installare un semplice aggiornamento cumulativo. Da qui ne deduco che, se lo spazio disponibile rimanesse così poco all’infinito, Windows non riuscirebbe mai a scaricare nessun aggiornamento; di conseguenza, gli aggiornamenti sarebbero bloccati per sempre. 🥴
Ci sarebbe da dire che, in realtà, spesso noto la quantità di spazio disponibile sul disco cambiare da sola, riducendosi o espandendosi con margini che vanno dal centinaio di MB al paio di GB, senza che io faccia nulla di particolare (cosa normale, sarà questione che ogni tanto l’SSD viene trimmato, o che le mie applicazioni e il sistema operativo smuovono le proprie cache), quindi non saprei quanto davvero questo sia affidabile come metodo per bloccare gli aggiornamenti, qualora ce ne fosse bisogno (che, ripeto, non è il mio caso)… Eppure, a pensarci bene, da qualche settimana ho il disco così strapieno, e da qualche settimana non noto arrivare aggiornamenti… per cui… 😹
Single core, 32 bit CPU, can't even do video playback on VLC. But it kinda works for some offline work, like text editing, and even emulation through zsnes! It's crazy how Linux keeps old hardware like this running.
Thankfully though, this laptop CPU is upgradable, and so is the ram, so I'm planning on revitalizing and bringing this old Itautec to the 21st century 😄
Ikr? Makes me wonder what that celeron was meant for? It barely ran the Win 7 that came preinstalled. That's why I'm so happy to see it run modern Debian with modern packages. Also why I'm doing some research on CPUs to upgrade it to
I assume it was made to upsell people to better CPUs. Celerons have always been awful.
That said, if Win7 came preinstalled then we're talking about different eras of Celeron, at least, I cannot imagine it would be as mediocre as a low-mid AMD CPU from 2004!
I always think of an ex of mine defending criticism of her craptop. "It was good for its time!" No, no it wasn't. It was built around a Celeron. It was built to be trash. It was ewaste with extra steps.
The first machine I ran Linux on was a 486DX 33MHz too. I think it had 8 MB (or some weird thing like 4 MB originally and randomly stuck 8 MB addition? I don't remember anymore.)
I had the exact same configuration. 4MB RAM upgraded to 8MB. 40MB HDD upgraded to 200MB later. And the fugliest case with triangular pastel buttons you ever saw. Ran Windows 3.11 then Slackware Linux on that for many years.
Who used those triangular pastel buttons? I remember seeing them on some friends’ computers but not on any Dells or Gateway 2000 machines. Maybe Compaq? Or Packard Bell?
I have not been able to find the case again since. It was a local shop that built it from parts, so it was not a big brand. I didn't pick the parts either, since I knew nothing about PCs at the time, and it showed lol.
Edit: it was a white/beige mini tower. If I recall correctly, it was similar to a lot of cases at the time, with a black band across and a circular button on the right. The turbo and reset buttons were pink and teal in the shape of triangles. I purchased it in 1992 when I needed a PC for college.
I started on a DX2 66 MHz with 4 MB RAM and 420 MB HDD. 4 x 1 MB modules. Later upgraded to 20 MB RAM (added 4 x 4 modules) and a 1.2 GB Matrox HDD that need an extra driver to be used. With 20 MB I created a RAM drive, copied Doom to it and ran it - loaded real fast but frame rate was horrible.
Yeah, mine was similar. Had some old Win95 machines from work that were getting thrown away; scavenged as much RAM as possible into one case and left Red Hat Linux downloading overnight on the company modem. Needed two boxes of floppy disks for the installer, and I joined up a 60 MB and an 80MB hard drive using LVM to create the installation drive. It was a surprisingly functional machine - much better at networking than it was as a Win95 computer - but yeah, those days are long gone.
My first was a rare CPU, but not that old. It was my first PC and was fanless, which I used to think was normal until years later. It was a VIA Cyrix III, maybe 32 MB RAM. Another interesting thing about this CPU was its overclock capabilities. I don't know how it did survive my overclocking, since I genuinely didn't have a clue, except that if I raised the numbers, KDE could run, but if I didn't, well, Xfce was also cool.
Mone might even had been a Cyrix too. Honestly I struggle to remember. My dad bought straight Intels and I bought the clones (cheaper) I can't remember which one I first started on, but both got it eventually.
Debian will not run on Pentium anymore. It is not performance, it is compiler options. You need a i686 (Pentium Pro). This means none of the Debian derivatives will either.
Adelie, Arch32, and T2 all still run on Pentium though I believe.

Ran Ubuntu 8 with Compiz and integrated graphics on a Pentium 4 with 512MB RAM. It was an awful machine, but Linux made it great to use. I still miss the peak of GTK2 + Emerald.
That's strange, what distro are you running on this hardware? VLC has been around for a long time, so while older hardware might not support versions of it that support newer codecs, I'd imagine it should be able to do at least some video playbook on older versions of VLC.
I suspect my first Linux ran on an 80mhz AMD K6. I did however also run it on a retired dual core UltraSPARC some years later I had somehow gotten my hands on. It might have been faster, but at that time it sure felt slow. And it sounded like a train passing through when it was on. In retrospect installing Gentoo on it was an optimistic endeavour.
I remember when computers had no memory and the storage was on punch cards made from mammoth leather that we had to tan ourselves after spending our weekends hunting the mammoth with spears. Also we carved our code by hand on stone tablets. Young people these days have it easy.
My 2011 MacBook pro is still chugging along thanks to Linux.
I upgraded 4GB RAM to 16GB, upgraded the HDD to SSD, and replaced the CD drive with a second SSD. Sadly the screen is almost completely gone, occasionally intermittent, probably a cable gone bad, not sure, but the mini display port is working fine for an external monitor.
I have Linux on a 2009 and 2012 MacBook Pro and 2013 and 2017 MacBook Airs.
The 2009 is getting a bit sluggish but for regular stuff, they all work great. We even played a Steam game on the 2012 earlier today (not AAA obviously).
I have been operating a DNS-232 NAS with 32 MB RAM and ARM CPU with lighty webserver for a while. It could run MoinMoinWiki, written in Python 2, acceptably. Slowest thing I have tried to work on was a 386. But this one was slow - compiling the kernel took an eternity.
You would be surprised. If you stay text only and use a 32 bit distro, it would run up to date versions of most CLI programs.
Adelie and Arch32 still support Pentium.
Booting to a GUI, there are still a few options. I think Velox would run on that. I bet Xorg with FVWM would too. You are not going to have much left for apps though. However, you could run a couple of terminals.
Adelie Linux (totally modern Linux distro) lists 64 MB as the minimum server memory requirement.
I ran Damn Small Linux on it about 15 years ago. That worked pretty well and it would even run a web browser. It would probably boot Tiny Core Linux, but there wouldn't be much RAM left to run any programs. The motherboard supports 128MB, but it's not really worth the cost to upgrade it though.
I may see about resurrecting that computer. I've got an old Motorola police radio that I would like to reprogram to operate in the 2M ham band and I think that PC will run the programming software.

Are you using systemd? Because 317 MB of RAM is really low for a normal Debian installation with XFce. At my mom's 2 GB ram laptop, it uses 850 MB on a cold boot.
It's not that bad. I run Linux on a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W, which is much weaker than this. (It's not a competition, though. Just saying.) And that's also a pretty standard device. I'm kinda interested to see if anyone can go below 64M RAM with a modern installation.
May I ask what are the specs and size of those Thinkcentres? I have one I'm using as a server and planning to upgrade the CPU because it has a dual core one, and someone offered me the same one I have, but it's pretty big. I'd prefer to use the tiny models when I can buy some 😁

i usually replace Thinkcentre fans w noctua for power draw, performance, and noise. and remove wifi module, not needed, draws power, closed blob firmware, is a risk. pops out easy, no config changes needed in Debian.
I've got an Acer Aspire from 2008 running mint on an Intel Atom and 1 GB memory (might be 2, I forget). It is slow but very usable except for video and such.
I ran it on an original Raspberry Pi B which has the same RAM and a slower CPU than the original Zero! It was still in use as a Pi-hole (running the DietPi OS) until recently where it seems to be dying or not keeping up.
No problem! I've used it for years, though my home assistant running on a Raspberry Pi 4 is now doing the pi-hole thing with adguard instead as the original one was having issues. Though you get weird DNS quirks when the machine running DNS also relies on the internet.
Plus that time I did a dumb thing in home assistant to see what would happen, and it brought the internet down.
So I am keen to get another Pi. I highly recommend keeping it on a dedicated device you never touch except for updates!
Those are better specs than what I used throughout college (an Asus Eee PC running Debian with Xfce and Openbox). Not a powerful machine, but I absolutely loved that thing.
I got you beat with my HP Mini running a 32-bit Intel Atom N270 that I use to develop games for the open source physiotherapy gamification device I made for my kid when I'm on the train.
Don't want to carry my full-size gaming laptop to work just to do some light lua coding.
Edit: im exagerating but I really have 20-yr 32-bit Dell laptops running minimal debian linux. and my current laptop is 10+ yrs old Lenovo which I already replaced its screen, rams, keyboard, bluetooth, usb ports... and it's still working flawlessly for daily tasks, video/music editing, coding and programming, internet browsing 😁
I booted Buildroot with kernel 5.17 on a Pentium II laptop off a CD I burned once - I needed to dump a drive once and that was the only hardware I had on hand that could dump 2.5” IDE drives and had a working CD drive so I could boot something other than the operating system installed on the drive.

Up 'til 2022 or 2023 company I work for used Pentium 4 at POS PCs running ancient openSUSE. They would be still in service if it weren't for leaking/swollen caps on most motherboards. Pure power wasn't really there, but it was plenty enough to run that checkout software...
I had slackware on my 386DX 40. 4mb ram. It was kinda short-lived. I never got my modem working. I got a book, paged thought it. Learning shit was hard in the 90's Internet.
Similar story but I just installed slackware on one of the University PCs (they just had a handful of PCs in the general computer room for the students and nobody actually watched over us) since I did not have a PC yet (only had a ZX Spectrum at the timback then).
Trying to get X-Windows to work in Slackware was interesting, to say the least: back then you had to manually create your own video timings configuration file to get the graphics to work - which means defining the video mode at the very low level, such as configuring the number of video clock cycles between end-of-line-drawing and horizontal-retrace - and fortunatelly I didn't actually blow up any monitor (which was possible if you did the configuration wrong).
At least we had some access to the Internet (most things were blocked but we had Usenet and e-email and one could use FTPmail gateways to download stuff from remote servers) via Ethernet, so that part was easy.
Anyways, my first reaction looking at the OP's post was like: yeah, if they're running X it's probably a too powerfull machine.
My favorite part of the first configuration of x back then, you screw with the conf for ages, manage to get a viable video mode set, startx for the billionth time... gray screen, mouse cursor... Overflowingly happy... Wait, now what? No program manager, no apps, no terminal, No exit, no shutdown. What's a window manager? The least apparent thing in the world being to switch consoles , export a display variable, and start an xtern in the video console.
Yeah, but at least we knew how to switch consoles.
I bet that most Linux users nowadays don't event know the CTRL+ALT+Fx shortcuts to switch console.
Can't say that the old days were really "good" compared to what we had now, but there was definitelly a lot of satisfaction in step by step getting the system to work.
Oh God no, You're 100% correct on all that. We were living through endorphins and we now have something in between nostalgia and Stockholm syndrome for the old days.
I got my modem working in Slackware in 1997 - but the PPP driver (equivalent of WinSock - which worked in Windows quite well at the time) would only work during the first boot of the system. After a reboot, PPP would never return, and the best I got out of the internet about it at the time (mostly using my Windows PC) was "real men connect to the internet through ethernet."
Between that an the useless (unless you enjoy frustration) sound drivers, I declared Linux "not ready for prime time," and left it to others until starting back in via Cygwin in 2003, then Gentoo (for 64 bit access you couldn't get any other way) in 2005.
Yeah I did another couple of false starts over the next couple of years. This time at different jobs. I finally made friends with Redhat on a laptop with Enlightenment WM. I managed to stay Linux in the desktop for the next 14 years. KDE, Gnome , switch to Ubuntu when Red hat decided to go and split out the door, went back to Fedora when Cannocial had their bad boy phase. OSX lured me away and 2015 I think it was. Super disappointed with the level of control I had over the OS, I went back to Windows for WSL. Continued* on that until Debian got their shit back together (nonfree). Eventually slid into NixOS, I don't know if it's as painful as slack where I was but it certainly feels like it, and I kind of missed that.
I did OS-X for my MacBookPro daily driver 2006-2008 (said premium laptop dying because of mis-applied thermal paste by the factory) - and started using a bit of Debian and RedHat at the time... my observation was, and still is: they all suck, but in different ways. If you value stability and control, there's no comparison to the open source model. Windows used to have the edge for hardware support, but that has eroded to the point that we had selected a WiFi card for our Linux system this year, but we're having to change now that we're moving to Win11 - no Windows drivers for that M.2 WiFi/BT card.
Stories from the "good" old days running Linux on a 386 machine with 4 MB or less of memory aside, in the present day it's still perfectly normal to run Linux on a much weaker machine as a server - you can just rent a the cheapest VPS you can find (which nowadays will have 128 MB, maybe 256MB, and definitelly only give you a single core) and install it there.
Of course, it won't be something with X-Windows or Wayland, much less stuff like LibreOffice.
I think the server distribution of Ubunto might fit such a VPS, though there are server-specific Linux distros that will for sure fit and if everything fails TinyCore Linux will fit in a potato.
I current have a server like that using AlmaLinux on a VPS with less than 1GB in memory, which is used only as a Git repository and that machine is overkill for it (it's the lowest end VPS with enough storage space for a Git repository big enough for the projects I'm working on, so judging by the server management interface and linux meminfo, that machine's CPU power and memory are in practice far more than needed).
If you're willing to live with a command line interface, you can run Linux on $50 worth of hardware.
Those Tualatin core CPUs were absolutely fantastic. They doubled them and made the Core2. I had one running for 10+ years. I don't know what it was about the bios but it was the fastest boot PC I ever built.
I have a 2001 compaq n600 still being used from time to time as a gateway for old tech as it has COM as well as LPT and analog video outs. It has 1.2ghz celeron, 512mb ram, 30 gig drive. Thing is kind of a beast for its time as my own desktop at that time was nowhere close to its spects. Thing was gifted to me after initially being given to install win7 on it. After telling the guy that this isnt going to happen and the best they couldd hope for is winxp and even then it'd struggle, they told me "oh, so linux is the only option then... well, it doesnt work for me. Have it, then, have fun with it!". I put ubuntu on it, but still gnome ground the poor cpu to a halt, so I had to switch to Xfce. Luckily it turned good enough not to downgrade further to things like bare X or Kolibri OS. Worked as a solitaire machine for my dad for a few years, helped me fix and set up stuff on a few occasions, but nowadays mostly collecting dust in my drawer.
I remember back in the day when I downloaded the first divx file my K6-400 couldn't smoothly play... I had been so used to thinking of that as a powerhouse coming from my Pentium 60, which was the first one I ran Linux on.
Pretty sure my dad's secondary desktop I used for my first Linux install had a 1.2 GHz Duron or something and 512 MB. I'm pretty sure I got that funky compiz fusion 3D-cube desktop running on there 😅

I take everything pretty much everyone says with a grain of salt, I am just amused by the fact that he turned what was obviously a barbed and leading question meant to - as he said - distort the truth back on the reporter and pointed out the fallacies in the assumptions she was trying to smuggle into the conversation with it.

The US Empire needs far-right states to serve as footholds, it can't just rely on aircraft carriers to project hard power. Israel is a land-based aircraft carrier. Now, I agree with Yogthos, the Empire has weakened its industrial capacity and genuinely is a paper tiger, it can be flashy for a quick period but lacks the necessary industry to pivot to a wartime economy necessary for protracted war.

If this does turn into a full blown war it and Iran really does have the capability to stop oil production in the Middle East we are heading for a major economic crisis all around the world and possibly more escalation. Not to mention Isreal seems to be doing a lot more damage to Iran than Iran is doing to Isreal. Either way the situation is bad for every one.
Well it’s going to lead to something crazy happening if this keeps escalating. There is no winner if this war starts and all attention will be shifted away from Palestine.

Hi lemmy So i was curious why Enlightenment didn't recieve much adoption in the Linux Desktop. (especially for a fully featured lightweight wayland DE) Ik Bodhi Linux uses Enlightenment, but it's more of Moksha rather then using Enlightenment

I suspect it just isn't well known. I used it for a while in my early days in Linux, which was back in the late 1990's, and i honestly haven't heard much abiut it over the years.
I do remember being impressed at the time. I think most people stick with the defaults for whatever distro they first choose. Since i was using Slackware back then, there was not a default choice, so i searched and experimented.
Enlightenment has been around for decades, and it was quite a bit more popular in its early days because things like KDE/Gnome/etc weren't the de facto DEs pretty much everyone used like they are now. I used it back when I had a linux box like 25 years ago and it was great, it was very slick and pretty, but now so much is written for KDE/Gnome that it feels like using anything else is just asking for trouble.
Just look at Tizan from Samsung all built on EFL (enlightenment foundation libs), EFL does not have many bindings with other languages and it’s “100% written in C”. The enlightenment OS is super customizable and written in its own component library based on OpenGL they call EGL. It’s a fantastic WM and hopefully Wayland version gets better.
It serves a very specific purpose for very particular people. It's meant to be as minimal as possible, and highly configurable, which means less rich interaction pieces and opinionated design decisions. Lots of developers still use it though.
Based on what I've seen, for a DE to gain much traction, you need at least one well-known medium-large distro putting it as a default on some of their install media—MATE is well-represented these days because Mint backed it at a crucial stage in its development. I don't think Enlightenment ever had that.
Enlightenment is SO configurable that it almost doesn't have a look, and therefore doesn't really have "brand' per se. Take a look at galleries and collections of enlightenment setups: they're all massively different in look and behaviour.
I remember in my early days of Linux (late 90s) it was too much for me.
I was lured to use it during those days as well because of all the cool and wildly different screenshots I had seen. I did manage to get it working and looking super cool, but it was fragile and complex. It was so easy to fully break it in my experience. I tried to use it again about 8-10 years ago and while it was easier than the 90s, it was more trouble than I was willing to put up with for a DE these days. Especially since Gnome (with extension) and KDE could trivially look nice.
When it was first developed it was too heavyweight and too customisable. The effort needed to theme it was huge and a lot of the popular themes were poor from a UX point of view.
Still E16 was usable, and then the development of E17 started about 24 years ago. People are still on E16 you say?
Others have pointed to the very slow development pace. I'll point out something else. When I was first starting out with desktop, Linux enlightenment 16 was one of the desktop options but apart from looking very 'different' to KDE or Gnome, it was damn difficult to get it to look anything other than default. Other desktop managers came on in leaps and bounds but enlightenment just stayed where it was and from what I can tell still is where it was. Meantime, kde and gnome have had multiple major versions and forks. These days I use either xfce or cinnamon, depending on whether hardware acceleration is available. Fundamentally I want my desktop environment to be a launcher for my applications and a way to manage my peripherals and UI preferences. I don't want to be looking at it or dealing with it or spending time thinking about it. I suspect that enough other people feel the same way
I tried it a few years ago. I was really impressed by how lightweight and gorgeous it is. In particular, I found it really cool and actually useful that you got a live view of your other workspaces on your panel. You could even fullscreen a video on your other workspace and then watch (a very small version of) it in your panel.
But yeah, even though I came back to it multiple times, I never ended up sticking around. It would crash regularly (not the worst thing, since recovery was generally seamless, but still meh), but in particular, it had some peculiar design decisions.
For example, if you double-click a window titlebar in virtually any window manager, it will maximize. In Enlightenment, I believe it got shaded (i.e. the contents of the window got hidden and only the titlebar was still visible).
Another prominent one was that its applet for connecting to WiFi and such didn't support NetworkManager, but rather only ConnMan. If you've never heard of ConnMan, yeah, I only know it from Enlightenment, too. Similarly, my distro (openSUSE) didn't package it either (and openSUSE was said to offer a relatively good Enlightenment experience). That's something which should just work, because you can't expect people to look up how they can connect to WiFi while they can't reach the internet.
And yeah, these are just the big ones that stuck in my head. There were lots of smaller usability issues, too. Many things you could fix by changing the configuration, but we're talking many in an absolute sense, too, i.e. you might spend an hour or more just tweaking things so that they behaved like you might expect.

Maybe a controversial opinion here, but the one thing that everyone says about it is that it looks gorgeous, and I really don't see it. Never have.
Even back when I first tried it out, maybe 15 years ago, I thought it looked strangely retro. Nowadays, compared to the eye candy that is completely standard in GNOME, KDE, MacOS, Windows etc., it looks incredibly dated.
It's all hard edges, low res icons, ugly fonts, and eccentric design choices. Yeah, it can make window elements transparent, but you can't dine out on that one trick for ever.
I certainly think that it has many eccentric design choices. It's not going to be for everyone. Some parts of it, I also think just look bad, which I had to customize. Well, and openSUSE's theming made a big difference, too: simotek.net/tech/projects/open…
"Retro" is also definitely a word I would use, though more positively connoted. It has *different* eye candy to the usual desktop designs, which is a big part of the charm. In a sea of flat designs and tiling window managers, it stands out as its own thing.
pip? Gnome extension for that is pretty great, works like the browser pip but for any window, justa video you can't click on, but useful for stremio and other stuff you need a preview of, still high quality
Well, that was just kind of one example to illustrate that it isn't just a static screenshot, you actually see what's going on in real-time. It's also useful when you're running a longer operation, like OS updates or encoding a video, and want to see when it's done or that it hasn't failed. You can just tell when the command output has stopped moving or a popup has appeared...
I vastly prefer connman/iwd, always had weird issues with NM. Currently running connman-gtk on XFCE.
And tweaking to your needs, isn't that expected for a new desktop setup? One hour isn't even that much. I'm amazed again and again how stuck even technical people can be in their habits.
Well, it didn't feel like I'm tweaking to my needs (that came afterwards on top), it rather felt like I'm just undoing design decisions that someone made to cater to their specific needs.
And I named the time mainly to give an idea of how much there was to tweak. My main problems were: - That I could not undo some of those unusual design decisions. - That it doesn't exactly make the system more robust when you need lots of non-default settings.
If you've never heard of ConnMan, yeah, I only know it from Enlightenment, too.
I used it for a while trying to wean myself off NetworkManager, which has a lot of optional dependencies that distributions tend to link in. So, you don't want Gnome on your system, but you want NM? Too bad, you got Gnome.
Anyway, connman is pretty fussy and not very intuitive. I think it's better for systems that are always on the same network; it's a pain to travel and connect to open networks with.

My bet is that this happened because they do develop both the Enlightenment desktop and the E libraries, which is a tremendous amount of work. Add to that that if they are a small team, they're not going to go relatively fast (afaik E17 took years...). Maybe it was the reason GNOME/GTK(+) and KDE (which began with an already developed GUI library) caught up.
But as I always say in this kind of posts, both Enlightenment and E are amazing and I so wish they were more rich featured and popular and, if I were the XFCE mouse and got fed up with the bullshit of the GNOME-ization/libadwaita-zion of GTK, I'd consider porting all my shit to E - it would be awesome if those two merged into one. GTK and E are both written in C, XFCE has a robust set of apps and a seemingly bigger team behind it...
I used it when I used arch linux on a PC with 4GB RAM and an HDD. Enlightenment loaded up in no time compared to even sway, looked pretty and had quite a few features like not terminating session if there are open apps and wallpapers per workspace! Its native apps like file manager and terminology were also extremely snappy. Using E apps felt like I had an NVME instead of HDD and I felt like I had a full desktop instead of a minimalistic WM without sacrificing speed. Switched away when I got a PC with good specs overall & a real NVME and iirc the desktop was crashing every now and then on the new PC. The default UI is very weird, you need to place most of the app icons by yourself and I think pressing Meta doesn't invoke the app launcher? Also I cannot start E with wayland currently, I could on v0.21.
As someone who loved it, this was it. We waited forever for the next release which promised a full desktop environment, it never happened, we moved on to stuff that actually existed. I understand there IS ongoing development and even forks, but i frankly have no idea how is it these days. If i found out you can just apt-get a full E-based DE tomorrow i would definitely consider dedicating time to test it, specially if it's still considered to be among the lightest, because man, when it was at it's best it was very much the promise of a Hollywood Hacker style desktop, it was awesome and you could do nearly everything on the keyboard, plus it had a gazillion themes.
I have used Enlightenment 16 for around ten years with episodes of fooling around others like blackbox, fluxbox, ratpoison, icewm, gnome and even KDE but always went back. I just loved that look I could get with that ripple effect at the bottom and gkrellm: my computer looked straight out of a science fiction movie.
Most of that time I was waiting for E17, it would be looking so good I was telling myself. It was taking so long but they were creating the foundations to something so powerful that the wait was well worth the wait I kept telling myself.
Then one I was finally able to try it, just a few components at an early stage, but it felt so crappy that I must have waited another five years before I gave another look at it. At that point it had improved but not nearly enough to consider it as a viable option.

Questo improprio pezzo di arredamento, che funge ovviamente anche (perché ridotto in questo modo è più così che non il contrario) da strumento di sollievo contro la mia allergia (che a metà giugno ancora imperversa, non ci voglio veramente credere), è decisamente rustico, umile, essenziale, ma comunque speciale. In qualche modo, a furia di soffiarmici il naso tra la decina e la ventina di volte in totale, è passato ad essere un groviglio di fottuti brandelli, e per qualche motivo la cosa mi fa molto ridere. Ma ora… lo butterò o aspetterò che si distrugga completamente…?

After some suggestions from the comments, here is a little shorter version. sort | uniq can be replaced by sort -u, as the output of them should be identical in this case (in certain circumstances they can have different effect!). I'm actually not sure what you mean by that. This script will only list the programs you used in the terminal. It prints the fullpath of each command. That's all it does.

I decided since I don't understand how all of this works, I will just simply ask Jerry personally about all of this data and technical details, so that people will no longer be confused about all of this.
The storage and processing power of modern smartphones are touted to rival those of a typical laptop. Yet, my trash-picked testing system from over a decade ago with a bottom-of-the-barrel SATA SSD can still boot to the Linux desktop faster than all but one of my Android devices.
Understandably, this isn't a huge priority since very few people are cold booting their phones every morning. But is it just plain unoptimized? How hard would it be to optimize? Do security features and checks bog it down? Is it that there's many tiny files to load when booting? What gives?
You're right, if you compare it to to ChromeOS/ FydeOS boot time it's embarrassing. And it's quite strange indeed. I also wondered why hibernation has never been implemented as an option (I guess blackberry used to have it instead). Also startup applications are something the user should be able to have control upon (android let you control it at the beginning, maybe till android 4, than you couldn't decide anymore, Xiaomi continued to offer that option for a while, then they stopped too).
Let's say android is like that, take it or leave, they could make the main OS boot, let you enter, and then boot extra background apps with a delay.
Unfortunately android is made for companies and their annoying notifications/ads , not for the user
I don't know if anyone has any real information but I'd think Iran would be shooting air bases and such. Targets that hurt Israel's ability to hurt Iran. Israel's command probably cares less about a residential building (full of people or empty) than a hangar with F35s.
Iran has spent decades building an arsenal of cheap drones that aren't really designed to hit targets, they are designed to financially cripple Israel by expending expensive iron dome charges.
And the numbers are staggering. I forget exactly but those early retaliations for assassination last year that where laughed at expended something like 100s of millions of dollars.
From I've seen they certainly used that initially with mostly older, cheaper, and slower drones in the initial waves intentionally to bleed out the iron dome but have been changing their strategy as the "Iron Dome" is weakened and/or gaps are discovered.
With each wave they adjust their strategy. Interspersing more Hypersonics and layering the drones in different patterns/locations to more readily distract/avoid the iron dome.
From estimated ratios of 9 impacts out of/150 launched in the first few waves vs 9/50 in the more recent waves.
Though obviously Israel hides the damage/strikes through media blackouts on military sites so we can't know for sure how accurate these estimates are and we mainly only get reporting on impacts in Tel-Aviv or other militarized "civilian" zones.
Oh for sure, I'm just saying they don't even need to hit any targets and they'd still be winning long term. They are capable of much more, and Israel can't fight Iran without US.
Satanyahu is betting on forcing Trump to agree to war with Iran on his watch. Avoiding that is thankfully one of Trump's main priorities, hopefully they don't succeed in changing his calculus on it.
And they aren't able to and won't be able to maintain media blackout much longer, Iran has stated that they will keep going and will go harder, and we've already seen some seriously damaged neighborhoods. As long as Iran keeps it reasonable (and what is reasonable has changed tremendously in the last two years of genocide and western media going hard to defend and justify Israeli war crimes), I think Trump can tolerate way more destruction of Tel Aviv than netanyahu thought he would.
Iran are definitely targeting air bases and other militarized targets which are regions Israel has a media blackout on so we don't hear about them as much and only hear about impacts in Tel-Aviv which is a militarized "civilian" zone (human shields was always projection of their own policies).
I think the difference in speed in the video is just perspective + distance, plust Iran has many different types of balistic missiles. I mean, technically speaking many balistic missiles do go at hypersonic speeds, but that's not what people mean when they say hypersonic missile, they refer to missiles that fly very low at hypersonic speed and can maneuver before hitting their target. You can clearly see the balistic trajectory of these missiles.
I'm no expert, but usually when missiles "go ballistic" their engines turn off and they have limited maneuvering capability at the end of their flight.
This one looks like it had engines on all the way to the target, which is a fairly newer class of design.
I mean I'm no expert either but you can see this characteristic burning on most ICBM videos, it's just the reentry vehicle reaching insane temperatures.

Perhaps you have missed the part where Israeli citizens have been openly saying that we need to wipe Iran, Palestine and multiple other countries off from the world map. They want genocide; they will get some retaliation from who they are attacking. FAFO

You know, the reason we have sympathy for Palestinian civilians is because they're not responsible for the actions of Hamas on Oct 7, even if many of them were brainwashed to be happy about the massacre. Please apply the same logic to sympathizing with civilians who are not responsible for Likud's actions, a large proportion of whom have also been protesting against the party in the past year.

Israel can be more selective in it's targets in Gaza, but they deliberately chose hospitals. Iran, the nation defending itself, has to send large missile barrages to try and break through the iron dome defense. Those will be less precise
I don't see how that makes a difference? Israel bombing civilians with precision doesn't make imprecise bombing of civilians more acceptable. Everyone ends up just as dead. It just makes it more palatable for people who value retribution above civilian lives.
To put it another way: if you want to hit a military target but can't do so without outsized collateral damage, you don't have ethical grounds to make the attack. You don't see people defending the USA's use of Agent Orange in Vietnam just because it was the only feasible way to clear foliage.

Show me the evidence that these missiles are falling on targets with strategic importance; show me that they're making efforts to not waste human lives. Welcome to war, where human rights are optional and at the discretion of a select few. People will cheer for death like it's a gladitorial arena, while others act to mitigate as much suffering as possible. Still others will turn away in disgust and become recluse. No answer is correct; at least until the victor writes the history.

Often, even people who are against a government will support warring against a perceived enemy, which is why so many leaders, when in trouble at home, start wars.
