CDC official in charge of Covid data resigns ahead of vaccine meeting

The scientist responsible for overseeing the CDC team that collects data on Covid and RSV hospitalizations resigned on Monday.

Dr Fiona Havers told colleagues in an email that she no longer had confidence the data would be used “objectively or evaluated with appropriate scientific rigor to make evidence-based vaccine policy decisions”, according to Reuters.

She resigned before a planned meeting of a new vaccine panel put in place by Robert Kennedy Jr after he fired all 17 members of the CDC’s independent vaccine advisory panel. Kennedy also dropped a recommendation to get the Covid shot for healthy children and pregnant women.

Threat in Your Medicine Cabinet: The FDA’s Gamble on America’s Drugs

A secretive group inside the FDA gave the global manufacturer a special pass to continue shipping more than a dozen drugs to the United States even though they were made at the same substandard factory that the agency had officially sanctioned. Pills and injectable medications that otherwise would have been banned went to unsuspecting patients across the country, including those with cancer and epilepsy.

The FDA didn’t routinely test the medications for quality problems or use its vast repository of drug-related complaints to proactively track whether they were harming the people who relied on them.

And the agency kept the exemptions largely hidden from the public and from Congress. Even others inside the FDA were unaware of the details.

Lifetime emissions compared to public transport is very high, yes.

It’s a shame car companies are exploiting this talking line to recommend even worse ICE cars.

The lesson should be to prioritise soft mobility and public transport .

"When I knew I had to do something, anything, about the war crimes in Gaza (I was haunted by my lifelong grief and outrage that no-one, no-one, no-one stood up for us when we were being annihilated in Europe) I was immediately attacked online by right-wing Jews. The usual condescending reproaches and violent insults were trotted out: I was giving aid to our enemies; I was spreading a “blood libel”; I was a Jew-hater; I was “pro-rape”. None of these insults could touch me because I knew how ludicrously false they were. As painful as it is to lose cherished friends, I asked myself: Is this intense social pressure why so very few Germans stood up against the Nazis?"

there's no good guys here
and if anyone fires a nuke anywhere on earth we all suffer
in reply to zombiewarrior

China are objectively the good guys here, and the US is a rabid dog of a nation that German fascists used as their model. It's pretty obvious who the bad guys are.
in reply to ☆ Yσɠƚԋσʂ ☆

russia are clearly good guys too, just defending themselves
everyone so busy defending themselves
in reply to zombiewarrior

Given that Russia is on the side of the global south, yeah they are the good guys in the primary contradiction between the west and the rest of humanity.
in reply to zombiewarrior

It's one thing to bomb the pipeline of a completely cucked and subservient vassal state like Germany that will just meekly take it and say "thank you sir, may i have some more".

It's another to do it to a sovereign nuclear superpower like China. At that point you're declaring war on one and a half billion people who produce one third of the entire world's manufacturing output.

Good luck and have fun with the consequences.

lol i love you warmongers who are so against the US but think somehow if we all die in a nuclear war caused by China that will be great

ah yes, we "warmongers" who warn against bombing the energy infrastructure of another country because we don't want a war

a nuclear war caused by China

talks about Russian-Chinese pipelines getting bombed and then claims that the resulting war would have been "caused by China"... 🤡

War-weary Gazans share images of destruction in Israel

""I was never a fan of Iran, I still don't like them because of their intervention in Gaza and other Arab countries, but seeing them retaliate for real, not a play like in previous times, made me happy, despite all the sadness around me," said Amr Salah, 29.

It is nothing compared to what Israel did to Gaza, but at least a taste of it. It is maybe time to end all of this, in Gaza too," he added."

Israel's military campaign since has killed nearly 55,000 Palestinians, most of them civilians, according to health authorities in Gaza, and flattened much of the densely populated strip, which is home to more than 2 million people. Most of the population is displaced and malnutrition is widespread.
Despite efforts by the United States, Egypt and Qatar to restore a ceasefire in Gaza, neither Israel nor Hamas has shown willingness to back down on core demands, with each side blaming the other for the failure to reach a deal.

If the United States wanted a ceasefire, there would have already been a ceasefire.

Plex has paywalled my server!

I tried testing a movie from my home server in plex through firefox and repeatedly got this message, even after reloading.

I knew that they had paywalled the apps on mobile and streaming from outside the network but now they have also blocked watching your own movies through your own hardware.

I do get the point that making software should be able to sustain people but I dont see the move of plex as a fair thing to do. Yes, they have made great software but taking your home server hostage feels like the wrong move.

Even a pop up that says "we need you to donate please" would have been fine. make it pop up before every movie, play donation ads before any movie but straight up disabling the app is kinda cruel.

Anyway, i have switched to jellyfin and it is insanely good. please give it a try. you can run it alongside plex with not issues (at least i had none) and compare the two.

In any case, good luck. Let me know if you need help.

in reply to Vanilla_PuddinFudge

Thats not what I meant. I of course have wireguard set up for administration and my own streaming needs. But friends of mine who were able to use plex by just making an account but now they cant because of course there is no relay server etc. I'll have to think of a way to make it available to them (easily!) without putting my network at risk.

The Terminal Question

I know this probably comes up a lot and is liable to spark some debate, but I'm curious what the good options are for terminals. I've skimmed some reddit/lemmy posts about it and looked at a few options and I dunno how to decide between them because they all seem like they're too narrowly focused on some particular use case. I'm just using it for general terminal stuff, nothing terribly fancy. I'm aware that there's not one terminal to rule them all or anything, so I'm curious: what do you folks use, and more importantly, why do you use that over the (many) other options available?

Personally I've just been using konsole since it's what came with kde and it seems nice and all, but I feel like I'm missing out on features I don't even know about. One feature that might be nice is some kind of local LLM integration so I can get help on how to tinker with settings and such where i'm doing the tinkering instead of constantly tabbing out to duck.ai or w/e.

in reply to Libra00

I have determined that foot is best for me personally, like alacritty and a couple others, it is very barebones. No tabs or anything like that without tmux. But it doesn't rely on GPU acceleration and is just as fast (or faster) than my experience using GPU accelerated terminals. Easy to configure and since it doesn't have the GPU requirements it works on old hardware like a dream. Only possible issue is that it is wayland only but since that is all I like to use it is perfect.

I find a lot like ghostty and wezterm try to include too many features. All I need a terminal emulator to be is a terminal emulator. But then a lot of these then add tabs, build in multiplexers & more and it is more bloated than I like a simple utility to be. Additionally, I don't need native tabs as a lot I do in the terminal uses SSH so it is easier just to use tmux/zilji and not have to manage it as much.

in reply to Libra00

Linux vtty forever! Can't cat data into the framebuffer when your desktop is getting in the way!!

Jk I use gnome terminal for everything, or whatever default is available. It's quite amazing that most of them handle all but the most niche terminal features these days.

When I need to install a terminal emulator for some reason I always go for urxvt.. but it is pretty terrible (it's a great vt but mouse interaction is clunky and graphics are old school) compared to pretty much everything else.

I liked posting a picture here so I think I will try to do it weekly 😀

This is what the dawn of January 1st 2025 looked like for me. We've slept in my van through the night to get this view. The temperature was about -20℃ but it was worth it in the end.

The flats in the picture is the frozen Lake Paravani and the mountains are the Samsari ridge.

Because GHF aid sites are designed as traps to kill Palestinians. There is nothing humanitarian about GHF.

Israeli-American funded and ran 'aid' organisation which lures Palestinians from north to south Gaza if they want to get food GHF exists to ethnically cleanse the north of Gaza because other aid organisations distributed accross all of Gaza.

GHF also has Israeli soldiers on tank machinegun position, spraying bullets into the crowd at food collection because they think that is funny.
