Russia Giving North Korea Shahed-136 Attack Drone Production Capability
Russia Giving North Korea Shahed-136 Attack Drone Production Capability: Budanov
Ukraine's intelligence chief says Moscow is giving Pyongyang advanced military technologies that could shift the balance of power on the peninsula.Howard Altman (The War Zone)
It’s not about how much SK can produce.
It’s about the fact that SK is now going to have to create a whole new IADS layer to defend against these cheap tactical kamikaze drones / prop-driven cruise missiles.
Just connect the gaming cafes up to FPV drones. Whenever a Shahed is heading their way, divert some of the players to gun them down and win a stuffed bear or something.
At least with guns, they’re more evenly matched. South Korea only has some mandatory military service.
But with drones? South Korea has entire generations of gamers training their whole lives for this.
…you should look into what this shit is doing to Ukraine. They’re quite difficult and tedious to intercept, and they are cheap enough that it’s not that hard to launch saturation attacks.
Put another way: if NK just converts a bunch of factories and cranks out, like, a quarter million of them over a few years (they’re very simple - I don’t think that’s an insane proposition, seriously), that becomes an existential conventional strike capability, especially if you factor in their artillery assets too. They could ruin every single military and industrial zone in SK in a single strike if they built up a stockpile like that. Seriously, hundreds to thousands of small weaponized UAVs per target where the target list is in the hundreds is not something that modern day IADS could hack - much less economically. The only systems that are going to be able to effectively deal with massed and sustained attacks like that are directed energy weapons, which are only now being rolled out operationally in relatively small numbers, and I’m not sure SK has a system like that ready for deployment.
That’s because Ukraine is stretched thin economically and militarily. Their economy is 10x smaller than Russia and has limited domestic production capabilities.
SK on the other hand, has significant existing defensive and has an economy over 50x NKs. Their 2% GDP military spending is bigger than NKs entire economy!
The only way the Shaheds can be a threat is if SK commanders fail to recognize them as a problem. I won’t discount naivety or incompetence but I’ll bet every military is paying close attention to what’s happening in Ukraine right now.
SK has a number of domestic drone manufacturers and has a growing defense sector, they are most certainly looking at ways to counter whatever NK has access to.
If the NK soldiers sent to Ukraine thought those drones were scary, think what would happen with an entire country of FPV pilots and the production capacity to match could do.
How so? The only reason they’re so deadly in Ukraine is because they don’t have the resources to adequately defend the huge front and they can’t invest sufficiently to produce a scalable defense.
By the time NK is able to field enough drones for anything close to saturation, SK would have stockpiled more than enough defensive options.
Only 150 or so Gepards have been sent to Ukraine. SK can build their own mobile AAA and can likely have thousands by the time NK has hundreds of drones.
How many Standard + SEARAM + ESSM + CIWS rounds do you think a single base and two surface flotillas could expend in a sustained saturation attack like that? Not how many in the magazines - how many can be effectively expended over a given span of time. Also, take into the account that a part of this strategy typically includes salting the mix with much more modern and capable and fast ASMs/AGMs.
Saturation attacks are the strategy the Soviet (and now Russian) Navy centers their doctrine upon for a reason. And that reason is the USN CVBG. Cheap, numerous drones make that strategy a lot more effective.
Why would you use a missile against a Shahed? Only if you weren’t prepared for that threat and haven’t updated your tactics. The future will be automated drones and use the guns for close range.
As for CIWS, I bet a software update can let it be much more efficient with ammo against slow moving targets. Let’s say 10 per drone, which would mean a Phalanx would be able to take down about 150 per magazine.
You basically need to have an extra layer of air defense to the existing model. Missiles for fast moving threats, drones and guns for the slower threats.
And how many weapons do you think NK can even produce? They have to import all their electronics and hardly have the expertise to improve the technology significantly.
Lmao dude what the fuck would you propose be used against a quarter million kamikaze UAVs?
And more importantly: the defenders need to get lucky every single time. The attackers only need to get lucky once.
Where do you get 250k UAVs from? If Russia is targeting 5000 a month, what makes you think NK can even manage 500 a month? Which would take 40 years to amass 250k.
And hope to counter 250k UAVs? How about 10m UAVs? That’s how much more economic strength SK has in comparison. And that’s not even considering using a cheaper design as a counter.

I wrote a longer comment further down in this thread—the group of 100 I saw live on @LordHito’s stream was definitely violent—some had what appeared to be homemade smoke bombs, they lit fires, and smashed some windows.
However, I think this response is entirely justified and the police have definitely been more violent than the protestors.
I don’t disagree with anything they’ve done, I just think it is disingenuous to say they were a peaceful mob, even though that is what the news has been mostly showing.

You seem to think I’m making disparaging comments about the protestors. I fully support them and think they are entirely justified in using any means necessary to repel the illegal forces of government that are violating the rights of citizens.
I am only relaying what I have witnessed live through a camera lens, not casting judgment against them.
Well, when I first brought it up in this thread, I was responding to someone else and it was relevant. Now you and I seem to be locked in some sort of pointless back and forth where I keep feeling like you are interpreting my words to be the opposite of what I’m saying half the time, and then you respond with either a question or another misinterpretation.
We may be stuck here until the end of the universe at this rate.
Maybe you are?
My position hasn't really changed, conflating property crime with violence is a time honored authoritarian talking point to the extent that you can find newspapers of the foundational protests that created this country that say essentially "why can't these protestors protest correctly?" "I was with them until the property crime!"
Maeve likes this.
I was not only talking about property crime, I was talking about throwing smoke bombs and rocks at the police.
Which, once again, I think is an entirely justified thing to do. My position hasn’t changed either, I suppose. I saw violent stuff, I think the violence is justified.
You haven’t read my comments, some of the smoke bombs appeared to be homemade from fireworks.
If I throw a smoke bomb or rock at someone’s face, I would consider that an act of violence, and if it was at a cop during these protests, it would be a justified act of violence.
Yeah so what? It's smoke it's not meant to harm, the smoke they fire at protestors is meant to harm and is actually more strictly controlled on the battlefield then the civilian policing world.
If they are wearing riot gear it's not meant to harm it's meant to say get the fuck out which is generally pretty easily discerned when they're chanting get the fuck out. Saying it's violence is what makes it a riot genius it's why of you support it you shouldn't die on this dumb hill.
At this point, I just find this amusing.
If I spit on someone, it’s legally assault, so by the same token, throwing a smoke grenade at them also assault. Whether or not I, a random Lemmy user, consider this to be violence doesn’t make a damn difference to what Trump will do—he wants to murder everybody already.
But I guess if you want me to bow out and not die on this hill, then my answer is “yeah, whatever bro, I saw what I saw.”
Cool.
If you spit on a cop or may or may not be depending on context and even then force has to be met with equal force. Try a dictionary then:
the use of physical force so as to injure, abuse, damage, or destroy
No you're too ignorant to know the difference and too obstinate to accept that your concept of violence may be skewed by capitalist interests.
You get that particular idiotic attempt at a dig goes equally well to you correct?
You seem to have responded specifically to get the last word, of you didn't want a response maybe don't respond?
I was asking if it would make you feel better. You seem to really want it, but then you respond with more questions.
At this point, I’m not trying to make any digs or prove anything—what’s the point, we will never agree anyway. I’m just munching my popcorn while you charge at windmills.
I mean you seem to really want it, you complain that I'm furthering conversation to have the last word and your solution is to continue the conversation yourself but solely to complain about it.
Tilting at windmills, you should really read the series because that quote doesn't mean what you seem to think it means.
By definition no it's not violence and yes targeted continual contact against warning to cease is harassment.
Dictionaries and code books, read like one ever.
That's twice now.
Good, see ya. Stop trolling or at the very least be more effective.
I would like to point out a subtle piece of "reporting" that is not only inaccurate, but I believe in there in an attempt to "both sides" the issue and appease Trump.
Newsom and Trump officials exchanged barbs all weekend after Trump federalized and deployed the California National Guard in Los Angeles amid violent anti-ICE protests.
The protests, as evidenced by the livestreams of LA, were almost entirely non-violent. Violence shown was almost entirely ICE committing the violence, such as when they intentionally shot rubber bullets at an Australian reporter in order to scare her away from reporting.
Saying the protests were "violent" does nothing more than give Trump justification for sending troops in the first place. This is intentionally misleading reporting that does nothing but give Trump more cover, possibly in an attempt to "both sides" the issue in case Trump's goons come knocking.

It also means the entire west coast port system would be cut off to MAGA America, and they'd have to pay whatever taxes, tariffs, fees, etc. that California demands. Or they could just ship everything through the Panama canal, at least until CaWaOr (still workshopping the name), can sign a deal with Panama to prohibit MAGA America from using the canal.
Bandwagon is Bringing Music Sales to the Fediverse
An open source, self-hostable music platform will soon allow people on the Fediverse to buy music and support artists. Here's why it's a big deal.
Bandwagon is Bringing Music Sales to the Fediverse
Bandwagon, the music-sharing platform built on Emissary, has seen a lot of success over the past few months. The site has grown to a catalogue of over 300 different musicians, spanning a wide range of different sounds and genres. After refining search and discovery features, project lead Ben Pate has decided to focus on introducing a payment system for music sales. What’s Coming
This new payment system allows for ways to financially support artists on the Fediverse, and the levels of support resemble a hybrid of what both Bandcamp and Patreon offer. Not only does this feature include line items for digital media, but a new mechanism for access and distribution. Additionally, the flagship instance of Bandwagon.fm will be taking 0% of any money musicians make.Premier Plans
To support development, Bandwagon’s flagship instance will be offering a $10 per month Premier plan that allows musicians to sell their music and offer their tracks at a higher bit-rate, among other features. To support the artist community, a number of Fediverse musicians will likely be gifted a lifetime Premier membership for free.Album and Track Purchases
Once this feature becomes available to musicians, they will be able to configure a Merchant account to dictate what items they want to include for purchase. This could cover individual tracks, EP’s, or entire albums. It’s also possible to configure Support Levels with monthly billing.Managing products and exclusive media in a merchant account.
When someone buys music through Bandwagon, their purchases get added to a profile. If you’re a native Bandwagon user, those live in your account. If you’re visiting from another platform, purchased items instead live in a special Guest Profile that can be connected to a Fediverse identity.
Special Access
Another new feature unique to Bandwagon is the concept of Circles. These are special, privileged collections of followers who can pay to access exclusive content: special album drops, rare tracks, secret shows, and private “behind the scenes” posts can all be accessed by premium followers.
What’s remarkable about this system is how things are tied together: this mechanism checks for payment, recognizes a Fediverse handle, and grants access on that basis. Previously, other systems needed to provision this kind of thing manually: you might have been able to pay for something through Stripe or PayPal, but there wasn’t always a way to account for a user’s Fediverse identity afterwards. Instead, that all had to be dealt with by hand.
Posts, Events, and Media can now be scoped to specific audiences with Circles
This also means that it’s possible to create multiple kinds of support levels, which could give a Bandwagon musician profile almost Patreon-like functionality. Different support tiers could receive access to different things, allowing rewards to stack with the level of donations. One level might receive private blog posts, whereas another might have access to a monthly track plus access to private blog posts.Alternate Payment Methods
For the time being, Bandwagon will support Stripe and PayPal when the feature launches. However, Ben has stated an interest in supporting many more payment processors, in the hopes of providing choice to artists and buyers:Bandwagon will build integrations with private companies (lots of them, actually) but we will never depend on any one specific company. Open APIs are best, but when those are unavailable, we’ll connect directly to Stripe, PayPal, or anyone who can deliver benefits for indie artists. But If I have to integrate with one merchant provider to accept payments, then I’ll integrate with two, or seven, or as many as we can to guarantee that the companies we work with cannot abuse their position with monopoly power.
The project has also stated having zero interest in implementing support for cryptocurrencies. However, given that Bandwagon is an open source project, it wouldn’t be that surprising to see third parties build in support for various crypto payments for their respective communities.
A demonstration of a check-out purchase through Stripe, which also supports Apple Pay.
Looking at the Big Picture
On the surface, these new features are big milestones for supporting the Fediverse music community. If we dig a little deeper, we’ll find that everything powering this new experience is part of the underlying Emissary platform. This is one more tool in Emissary’s arsenal for developers to build distinct services with donations, payments, and commerce in mind. Maybe in the future, we’ll see new kinds of Emissary apps that could act as replacements for DeviantArt, Nebula, or GameDev Market. There’s a reason this development is so important: the Fediverse today lacks any kind of commerce. While it’s possible to support people out-of-band through things like Patreon or OpenCollective, the reality is that the experience is pretty fragmented. Being able to support artists, musicians, game designers, open source developers, and instance admins are a necessity for growing a healthy Fediverse. If we could build standardized support for this kind of market commerce across different platforms, it could have a huge impact on the network’s ability to sustain itself.

So they will take 0% of money, except a flat fee of €10 every month in order to be allowed to sell music at all? This seems a bit more problematic, as smaller artists would lose money every month by trying to position themselves in the market.
I like the business model of selling subscriptions to the artists but giving them 100% of proceedings quite a lot, but it would be nice if they for example only had to pay a monthly fee once sales surpassed €10, or if they could sell a limited amount of tracks for free in order to test the waters before putting all their music out for sale.

They are not "losing money", they are making use of the service anyway. Any type of venture you are building incurs costs and risks, why should it be different for someone that is running an online presence?
If the developers of bandwagon were to carving exceptions for other users, pretty soon they would be taking the risks themselves of dealing with loss-leaders customers and would have to find other ways to make up for it. 10€/month is an absolute bargain for a service that will provide you a storefront and a distribution channel that can reach anyone in the world and demands absolutely nothing in return from you.
Fair enough. But musicians are not really "any type of venture".
Bandwagon is already taking on a risk by hosting music for free for listening. If they could find ways in which both them and the artists could profit from music published on the platform that lacks the commercial potential to justify a €10 subscription, this would be a win/win. Considering that it seems they are already hosting the music for free.
musicians are not really "any type of venture".
If they are looking for a way to make money out of their work, it is. And it is totally fine.
If they could find ways in which both them and the artists could profit from music published on the platform that lacks the commercial potential to justify a €10 subscription, this would be a win/win
Flip the equation here. The subscription is something to fund development of the platform. So anyone that wants to have a viable libre alternative to Spotify that can be useful to all indie artists should consider paying for it, even if they are not intending to sell stuff.
Sure, but that doesn't take away from the fact that under this model, small artists with little money seem to have a strong incentive not to put their music up for sale, which will cost both them and Bandcamp potential profits.
Maybe they could offer fans to sponsor a membership for artists if they want to unlock premium features.
I wouldn't say it's a bargain for the artist when there's plenty of services that offer that for free.
From a purely money perspective a small artist would probably lose money here while it may earn money in places like Tidal, which have much more audience.
Let's not lie people. It's not a bargain. $10 a month is a lot for that service. Maybe from a "San Francisco" or other rich American city that is Pocket change, but from most of the world $10 a month is a considerable expense.
Other thing is if you want to morally support ot because you really like that model for whatever reason.
To be honest, I don't much see the point. Of you are going for the complicated route (aka not using established platforms) are you are even considering self hosting, putting out your own website to sell music is easier and cheaper. And it's actually very common for artists to have their own website. You can find static hosting for a few bucks.
The world's income per capita is around $10000 a year. In South Europe is 25k€/year. In Northern Europe, 55k€/year. In the United States, $80k/year.
120 dollars per year is 0.5 percent of the income of the average citizen living in the (relatively) poorer part of developed world. That means that are plenty of people who can afford it, and it's not just the top of the top.
You have to think about disposable income, after taxes, rent/housing, food and all other essential services.
This is a leisure/personal project expense. And the disposable income for that tend to be 30% of net income at most.
It would be more like a 2%. Which may not sound like much. But it's same as saying you can do 50 things a year and this is one of those 50 things.
Anyway, I still think that price tag is too much, I don't think there would be a lot of people really willing to spend that for a service others provide for free with a bigger platform, or that you can do it by yourself cheaper if you want to go to an alternative route.
Once again I think it fits a spot only for alternative rich people.
I don’t think there would be a lot of people really willing to spend that for a service others provide for free with a bigger platform
TANSTAAFL. If people refuse to understand this very basic principle and if we don't collectively start putting our own resources on the line to invest in ethical alternatives, we will never be able to have a sustainable alternative that is not dependent on Venture Capitalists. Everything wrong with Surveillance Capitalism can be traced back to the point where people started expecting to get things for free when they should be asking themselves "What is the catch?".
But there is free lunch.
That argument I've seen it used precisely by adventure capitalist targeting rich alternative people to guilt trip them into their services. When those services could perfectly be free or cheaper without relying in big enterprises.
For this instance, instead of making some people rich by paying music hosting services a p2p network could be offered. If I would me making music I would 100% just offer it by torrent and be done with hosting costs.
Other of my favorite examples is Kagi search engine, which has used this same tactic to convince a lot of people to pay for something that is the same as a self hosted searxng instance.
paying music hosting services a p2p network
Hosting the files is the least of the problems. Accepting payments online is. Dealing with fraud is. Managing exclusive access and features for paying customer is. Getting one place where you can point your fans to go and buy your music or merch is.
self hosted searxng instance.
How is that free? Even if you are self-hosting, you still need to pay for your server, the electricity to run it and your time that you spend troubleshooting, making sure things are up-to-date, etc. Not to mention that you are also not accounting the labor of the developers of libre projects: FOSS does not grow in trees, they require people working for it as well.
I know plenty of small groups with their own webpage dealing with most of that. It's not that big of a deal.
I selfhost my own searxng, both labor and electricity cost are so small they are negligible.
My point is that if I am to be in al "alternative" economy is not to make rich a cool San Francisco dude instead of Jeff Bezos, is to not make rich anyone at my expenses. When I ask for something different I do not ask for making rich different people, I ask for a system that does not make rich anyone.
For instance Lemmy. Lemmy does not ask for subscriptions nor have ads. Voluntary donations are more than enough to keep it on float. Other people like Kagi CEO or some other CEOs like that would ask a subscription fee for lemmy and guilt trip people into thinking it's necessary, when it's not.
My point is that if I am to be in al “alternative” economy is not to make rich a cool San Francisco dude instead of Jeff Bezos,
That is the perfect display of crab mentality that is so prevalent in the Fediverse.
We're talking about one guy that is building a service that is 100% FOSS, and who currently has (according to the article) 300 musicians on the platform. Even if them all become paying subscribers, we are talking about something on the order of $3000/month. No one is going to become a "rich dude in San Francisco" because of that.
Even if he gets 10 times as many people paying, we are still talking about income that is less than what a senior developer would be making by slinging code at Big Tech. And if he got to the point where there that many people using his service, you can bet that would also mean more competition in the space. With the difference that no one would be able to build a monopoly around it because the service is FOSS and built on top of open protocols.
Voluntary donations are more than enough to keep it on float.
"Keeping it afloat" is not the same as "thriving". The Lemmy developers have made this their full-time job, but they could be making more money by doing deliveries by bike than what they get by donations. This is pathetically little for all the value that they have produced. There is so much potential in the Fediverse, yet we don't get to realize 1% of it because people like you keep this silly idea that an "alternative" economy is only fair if everyone is piss-poor broken.
You can consider using flagship instance as a way to fund the development.
It's not like they force you to use flagship instance.
There always third-party instance or self-host as an option.
I've seen multiple fediverse project dead before arrival, as the dev working on other job(s) for living.
Heck, that's also the same reason why most of fediverse project are from the West, a lot of people who lives in a country with low paygrade (including me) are not able to dedicate their time for FOSS project.

The place is called Butterworth's and it's where a lot of the top magas meet people outside official channels. They sit around in suits eating caviar and planning how they're going to break the world. A photojournalist could literally camp outside and basically show the world who is conspiring and lay out who is setting things up to fall. But they don't, and that should be pretty telling to people, if they knew.
On top of that the resturant is part owned by Nigel Farage, a racist brexit politician. You can just sit there and see different ambassadors walk in to chat up some of the most vile people in politics, and then not long after something horrendus is announced.
It's basically forecast for who will be involved in bad things to come. Articles like this are trying to point this out. And you making joke about it is literally helping them to get people not to look further into the situation.

They will not do anything about this, unless forced to. This is why it is crucial to build up an actually progressive third party and apply proper pressure from within the Democrats too, instead of all this "vote blue no matter who" bootlicking we have seen over the past years.

same thing with Y2K and plenty of engineering things: people were saying “it was no big deal! yall were saying planes were going to fall out of the sky! we wasted so much time and money!”… yeah; it was a huge and expensive effort that’s why the bad things didn’t happen
No. They never entered anywhere Israel is legally allowed to exclude even in war It being full of aid and verifiable non combatants.
It's kidnapping.
Just like how the US abducted people in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Your example is also kidnapping but even excluding that bit of nuance the key word is "in" they never entered territorial waters and thus were never "in" Israel or Palestine. Israel can declare 1500mi of the coast of Somalia an exclusion zone then kidnap people there and that would make just as much sense in a legal view.
Gaza is under a declared blockade, Maritime Law (the oldest of international law) allows detaining any ship bound for a blockaded port. It's really cut and dry, they very publicly declared they were bound for a blockaded port. It's not like Israel boarded a ship that just happened to be in the area, these freedom flotilla yahoos very publicly declared they were bound for Gaza, which under Maritime Law permits Israel to board it.
International law is an agreement between nations and doesn't actually restrict nations from doing things that will hurt your feelings. You're going down the sovcit path when you pretend international law is whatever you want it to be.
It's not like Israel boarded a ship that just happened to be in the area,
That's exactly what happened, blockade borders have to be announced and ships have to be allowed time to leave the area. Israel left their blockade and kidnapped people aboard a ship they did not allow to leave an area they weren't in.
these freedom flotilla yahoos very publicly declared they were bound for Gaza, which under Maritime Law permits Israel to board it.
Once they breach the blockade yes arguably though with only aid that gets more complex. Essentially aid entry is allowed so long as you agree to security arrangements that are both reasonable and lawful. That could mean Israel could board and search, or doesn't mean they can blockade all aid to starve a population which is specifically and in multiple very very illegal.
casebook.icrc.org/a_to_z/gloss…
Their sources section is awash with good relevant information and specifically findings on the last Israeli famous Israeli blockade and subsequent boarding (and death of iirc 9) which was found to be a legal blockade so long as the purpose was not starvation and aid could enter with security arrangements.
An operation involving naval and air forces by which a belligerent completely prevents movement by sea from or to a port or coast belonging to or occupied by an enemy belligerent. To be mandatory, that is, for third States to be obliged to respect it, the blockade must be effective. This means that it must be maintained by a force sufficient to prevent all access to the enemy coast.
So... according to the link you've provided Israel is actually required to board the ship or they can no longer prevent shipments of weapons coming from Iran?
Essentially aid entry is allowed so long as you agree to security arrangements that are both reasonable and lawful.
Has there been any indication these flotilla activists attempted to make such security arrangements with Israel?
Correct to an extent, the accepted meaning is that they must agree to security measures to pass through. It is not and never has been a way to willfully prevent aid and aide staff into combat zones.
They weren't in a blockaded zone as far as I'm aware, Israel only says they were approaching and providing intented destination as you must when attempting to pass through a blockade.
Even ignoring that they must be allowed to leave even if they enter the blockaded area without permission, it isn't a seize your property and imprison your crew for being in the general area openly providing intent kinda thing.
Israel has told the flotilla repeatedly they can deliver the aid through the proper channels and the port of Ashdod.
The small amount of captured aid from the freedom flotilla is being delivered to Gaza by Israel at the moment.
Correct, they hadn't entered the area yet though so they technically heeded their warning.
Stolen, if you take something from someone and dispense it as your own you're guilty of theft and conversion something they say Hamas does with aid. And moreover delivering aid doesn't negate the whole unlawful boarding, seizure and forcible human trafficking thing.
they can no longer prevent shipments of weapons coming from Iran?
Yeah it would really be bad if the genocidees could defend themselves

Outside the blockade area and on the high seas,34 belligerents relied on the practice of "visit and search"3s to stop vessels suspected of carrying "con-traband" to the enemy.36 A belligerent warship sailing on the high seas had the right to visit and search all merchant vessels. Merchants found carrying enemy contraband were captured and escorted to the belligerent's nearest home port. The belligerent nation's prize court then determined the fate of the captured ship and cargo.37 In cases where merchants resisted either capture or visit and search, the blockading force was entitled to pursue and, if neces-sary, damage or destroy the vessel to force the ship to submit.
Page 901
belligerents today continue to enforce blockades from long distance or through blockade zones. They do so because of three twentieth-century developments in maritime warfare: first, the growing importance to belligerents of conducting economic warfare in conjunction with armed con-flict;s3 second, the introduction of a large array of new weapons to the maritime battlefield; and third, the proliferation of modern weapons to less powerful nations incapable of conducting traditional blockade. In combination, these three developments have forced states to replace traditional blockade form with long-distance blockade or blockade zones.
they very publicly declared they were bound for a blockaded port.
Not illegal.
which under Maritime Law permits Israel to board it.
Not detain and seize, maritime law is very specific in that a blockade cannot block aid unreasonably. A super famous ship you've searched that's filled solely with celebrities and aid is something you shouldn't turn away so long as they accept security arrangements like boarding and searching. This isn't star wars nor are they the trade union and total blockades like your implying are very illegal as defined by the law you're sourcing.
The flotilla was told several times to turn around or be detained. They decided to not turn around and continued on their intended course to breach the naval blockade.
According to international maritime law Israel can intercept and detain before they enter.
Notice you never said they did breach the blockade which btw by international law they have to be given time and allowed to leave even if they enter without permission which they didn't do nor is Israel claiming they did.
Intercept and detain yes, board, seizur, deport and treat as their own... No because duh.
She was captured and held unlawfully sure, but if it was actually for humanitarian aid and not self publicity, i might have some sympathy.
So if somali pirates would just take the ship and send the crew back home it would all be good?
You're having an interesting opinion here.
Can you please elaborate on that connection from your perspective. I imagine there must be some context I am overlooking.
Willful ignorance of atrocities does not have any chance of stopping or slowing them.

Ahh yes, because that solves the bystander effect which is why Kitty Genovese did not die from being stabbed in 1964. Also why the Uvalde police are heros for not participating in that school shooting. /s
You still haven't explained any of your reasoning, so I will assume it is in bad faith.
Finally, your quote is about interpersonal conflict, not violence and murder. Mr. Dyer was a therapist.
You saying “In bad faith” = ~~i cant~~ I am not trying to meaningfully disagree with you
You can prove it's in good faith by explaining your resoning. i.e. How is it worse, specifically? How will they possibly "sort their own mess out"?
If you don't want to, that's fine. Spouting empty platitudes is all I've read the past two responses. Any more will be met with shitposts by me to match your energy.
It's a blockade for a war zone. Standard practice for centuries, unless they just shoot you which was the previous option for most of humanity.
Now let's get pedantic and have someone screech that Israel doesn't recognize Palestine and it's not a war so no blockade 🙄
When you're a public figure, that's to be expected.

In a statement to CNN, Israel said that it “is preventing the entry of all vessels into the Gaza Strip, in accordance with international law.”
Is there a charitable interpretation that could make this statement true?
Humanitarian aid is getting in through land borders into Gaza.
Gaza doesn’t have a port suitable for delivering large amounts of goods in the first place. Aid delivery has to go through the proper channels.

Since Gaza is an open air prison under the control of Israel and not recognized as an independent state we can blockade it all we want.
Best I got.
Really hard to justify genocide.
Palestine is not a recognized country in most of the western world, which in itself is a travesty, but you can probably infer a lot of bs from that.

That's not even true.
As of March 2025, the State of Palestine is recognized as a sovereign state by 147 of the 193 member states of the United Nations, or just over 75% of all UN members. It has been a non-member observer state of the United Nations General Assembly since November 2012.

‘Complicit with a totalitarian regime’: Canada’s border rules are landing asylum seekers in ICE detention
The removals are a product of the longstanding Safe Third Country Agreement, which requires anyone seeking refugee protection in Canada or the U.S. to claim asylum in the first of the two countries they reach.
I understand why they've had that agreement. However, it should've been obvious for some time now that maybe that's an agreement they should bin? It's blatantly obvious the us don't treat refugees/asylum seekers the way they deserve at the moment
Yep. Politicians and the kind of people that hang out with politicians seem to be behind the curve on understanding what's happening, but even they must know this by now. The trick is that rolling it back could provoke Trump, and they're trying to keep that to a minimum at the moment.
That being said, if Carney doesn't fix the rules within the next year I'm going to be very disappointed. The courts will probably strike it down eventually regardless.
Folks have been suing the gov about the Safe Third a country agreement since 2005 - opposition isn't new. And yes, the courts did strike it down but the gov appealed, and it's still under review.
The govs website about the agreement even includes a section on why the US is considered a safe country.
I think assuming they are 'behind the curve' is
... generous.
Safe Third Country: more information | Canadian Council for Refugees
This page has historical information about the Safe Third Country Agreement. More the main page about Safe Third Country, with current information, see ccrweb.ca/en/safe-third-country.ccrweb.ca
It was successfully appealed in 2008, if we're being picky.
The appeal was based in the fact that the judge found that the basis upon which a regulation was made (i.e. the position that the states is a safe country) does not have to be absolutely correct, so long as the gov considered if it might be true.
(See: decisions.fca-caf.gc.ca/fca-ca…)
[57] Understanding precisely what is in issue in a judicial review application is important when it comes time to determine the standard of review as well as the scope of the review that can be conducted by the Court. An attack aimed at the vires of a regulation involves the narrow question of whether the conditions precedent set out by Parliament for the exercise of the delegated authority are present at the time of the promulgation, an issue that invariably calls for a standard of correctness.
...
[60] Despite this language, the matter raised by the application is a pure vires issue (see the relevant part of the application for judicial review quoted at paragraph 15 above).
...
[78] Subsection 101(2) does not refer to “actual” compliance or compliance “in absolute terms” nor does it otherwise specify the type and extent of compliance contemplated. However, Parliament has specified the four factors to be considered in determining whether a country can be designated. These factors are general in nature and are indicative of Parliament’s intent that the matter of compliance be assessed on the basis of an appreciation by the GIC of the country’s policies, practices and human rights record. Once it is accepted, as it must be in this case, that the GIC has given due consideration to these four factors, and formed the opinion that the candidate country is compliant with the relevant Articles of the Conventions, there is nothing left to be reviewed judicially. I stress that there is no suggestion in this case that the GIC acted in bad faith or for an improper purpose.
I mentioned it was challenged back then to demonstrate that it's been known to be problematic since the beginning.
If we want to follow along with the details there have been further challenges, started in 2017, which were on the basis that it violated the charter. The courts agreed in 2020, but again it was appealed and the court gave it's ruling in 2023: decisions.scc-csc.ca/scc-csc/s…
I remember watching Trudeau respond to this in 2020, when he was doing his daily appearances from the governor generals cottage.
I'm not trying to shame anyone for not knowing, I get that there is a lot going on in the world and people are struggling in an individual basis too. But it really shocks me when are surprised that it's not all sunshine and rainbows and open arms. I actually learned about it in 2017, when the PM was on TV saying canada would welcome people. Not if they are being deported from the US, I guess 🤷🏻♀️

News outlets in crisis mode as Google-led AI search push crushes website traffic
News outlets in crisis mode as Google-led AI search push crushes website traffic
Major news outlets are in panic mode as artificial intelligence chatbots push by Google and other Big Tech firms crush website traffic.Thomas Barrabi (New York Post)
It's a huge disaster in the making. There's probably a game theory model that explains what's happening but damned if i know it. AI is a trap.
At the beginning of LLMs as a consumer tech phase, the big tech companies believed that they would soon generate synthetic data without human labor costs. But synthetic data caused model collapse when used as training data. So they still need humans.
But now their competitors are using scrapers and summarizers and those are expensive so they have to extract more value from search traffic and that means fewer referrals to sites. Fewer referrals to sites reduces original content and leadabto less traffic and training data for their models.
The only two ways out are to create an international regulatory body ornto break up facebook, microspft, and google.
google search has been trash even before llms, i believe its one of the reasons chatgpt got so much traction. first 2 pages are just generic slop with paywalled or ad-infested content.
i switched to kagi 2 years ago and its has relevant results on page 1 that i won’t get in google even after 10s of pages. plus i don’t bombed with ads for that term for weeks.
People on Twitter regularly go “@grok is this true” to everything and trust the AI to be correct.
The same AI that said the fresh photo of National Guard members sleeping on the floor was from 2021…
Watch his recent interview with Nilay Patel from The Verge. Watching him dance around questions about this was painful.
This man only cares about increasing Alphabet stock prices to ensure as large a golden parachute as possible on the way out.
AI stands for Ambitious Indian
(Just plagiarizing the joke about that company that went bankrupt)
This man only cares about increasing Alphabet stock prices to ensure as large a golden parachute as possible on the way out.
This Is literally his legal obligation, welcome to capitalism
there are many ways to fulfil this “obligation”… i’d argue that he’s increasing alphabet stock price in the short term but long term what the fuck is going to happen when the sources all go out of business?
… oh right they’re going to become a news monopoly… cool cool cool
regardless, i think there’s an argument to be made with all this “we are evil because it’s our legal duty to shareholders” that evil is a bad long-term choice. i think boeing is the prime example: if they weren’t “too big to fail” they’d be fucked because of their short term thinking
why would you read a whole article to answer a simple question when AI gives you the answer directly?
context?, nuance?, verifying the AI slop?
One of the problems that the major news outlets have is that they repeat each other. It's not merely an issue of AI compiling news stories, but that on top of the fact that all of these newspapers are doing hardly any research. For example, if you live in a town that's not too large, there might only be one local paper, and they might send out reporters to local events. Obviously you would then go to that newspaper if you wanted to learn about local events, because they are adding explicit value.
But if you're trying to read about national politics, a lot of the information is going to be the same in a lot of the newspapers. Which means nobody cares about the newspaper itself. And this is a creation of the newspaper's own decision making over the past few decades.
I'd say their decision making was mostly forced by their drop in ad revenue and subscriptions forced by the internet.
Though I do wish that someone would make a Spotify for news so that I could pay once and get access to all of them and at least give them 10 cents per article or something, because I will never pay the subscription cost any are asking.
As much as I'd like to support them, the price to utility ratio is way the fuck off at the prices they ask now.
It's also the speed of news now. When you had a edition a day in print there was time to do research.
Now with instant publishing on the web it's more important to get the basic story out fast. With the hope it's the one that sites like reddit pickup.
Most news sites ask me to consent to google tracking or pay, neither of which am I prepared to do in almost all cases. I am sure I am not alone in this. Their decision to align with google in this way is more than a turn off, it is an indication of their untrustworthiness.
I shouldn't need to explain why I do everything I can to avoid being tracked by the likes of google. The idea that I will pay to be subject to propaganda died with the 20th century. If news outlets want my eyes on their pages they need to come up with a way to make it worth my time.
We need new search. Really we need a new web.
Blockchain's immutability might serve a public record of 'news', even moreso if combined with certificate verified identity on information disseminating 'social' media. The blockchain could actually be useful in this case. You don't have to link your irl identity to your internet identity everywhere, but it might not be a bad idea in the areas of information disseminating social media. These are just idle thoughts.
Edit - I saw a post today purporting to be a twitter screen grab of a James Woods post with a reply. The James Woods post was a screengrab of a video, supposedly of the current LA riots, with a comment along the lines of: Democrats can't talk about peaceful protest and support this. Following this was a reply saying 'this video is from 2020'.
I have no idea if either or both of these tweets happened, if the video was from 2020, or if either person were who they said they were! With the blockchain's immutability you could verify all of this automatically, and algorithmically reduce the reach of repeat offenders' posts.
There is a lot of value in this in terms of public discourse.
Similar processes could happen with both scientific/academic papers and government policy v. outcomes.
It might change the nature of the public debate.
With what passes for news these days at most outlets I can't say I feel too bad for them that someone else beat them at their own game of feeding the masses surface level doom scrolling slop for engagement and ad impressions.
Hell, a large chunk of the junk being put out by these same outlets is trash written by the AI solutions they are paying for. Probably solutions from the likes of Google that is giving it to them at both ends.
Once the snake finishes eating its own tail maybe the good reporters will still have somewhere that pays them for the good work they do.

Syria orders women to cover up on beaches with conservative new dress code
Syria issued a conservative new dress code Tuesday requiring women to wear burkinis or full-body swimwear on all public beaches, the latest cultural shift since Islamist-led rebels toppled dictator Bashar al-Assad’s regime last December.
The Tourism Ministry said the new guidelines were made in “the requirements of public interest.”
“Visitors to public beaches and pools, whether tourists or locals, are required to wear appropriate swimwear that takes into account public taste and the sensibilities of various segments of society,” Tourism Minister Mazen al-Salhani said in a directive posted to Facebook.

It was never going to be a liberal government. The rule is conservative dreck, make no mistake, but the norm was already for burkinis and other such swimsuits to be worn. It's not a radical departure from extant behavior.
My concern, going forward, is more towards whether the government will resolve itself in a reasonably democratic way.
I'm not holding out hopes for a Tunisia, but a Jordan or Lebanon might be reasonable to cross one's fingers for.

I mean I wouldn't call it a beacon of democracy, but all things are relative. I picked one of the more reasonable polities in MENA with a mostly-functioning multiparty system. The alternative would've been saying I hoped for Turkiye, but, uh, considering Erdogan's behavior, I wasn't sure I wanted to make that comparison as a positive.
My point is simply that there is still hope for Syria to improve into something better than it was - and certainly better than some immensely calcified repressive regime like Iran or the Saudis, and that this... immensely distasteful conservative dreck does not necessarily sink that hope.
We look for Syria to take a step forward, not to become Sweden in a decade (though that would, obviously, also be immensely welcome; just less likely). Institutions are built a year at a time, a battle at a time, not all once.

Not that it matters that much anyway, HTS is essentially a joint puppet project by Turkey and the USA.
As long as whoever is in charge follows their geopolitical demands, they really won't care how they handle the internal country.
Still at least it's a significant upgrade from Assad. Anyone would take this over chemical weapon civil war again.

Not good because no one should tell wear anyone what to wear or what not to wear. Let’s not forget the obsession of conservatives and even liberals with banning hijabs and niqabs in the western world under the guise of "liberating“ women. I find it ridiculous that the whole world seems obsessed with telling women how to dress.
Anyway, this is definitely a hint at the society they imagine and I don’t think it’s a good direction. On the other hand I think westerners don’t understand the Middle East either.
The Middle East is very much class divided and the upper class wouldn’t go to public beaches anyway, while middle class and below is usually very conservative, no matter which religion or even if not religious.
That’s why even without this ban you wouldn’t really see women in a bikini on public beaches because that’s not the culture. You can find it good or bad but that’s how the culture is. Even in Tunisia which people love mentioning it’s not a common thing.
If you go to hotels it’s gonna be different because that’s where all the rich locals will go to be on their own and usually they have a more "western" lifestyle. To illustrate, not even in hotels in Saudi Arabia would they enforce such a dress code (we’re talking about luxury hotels here) because money talks.
And my neighbors are rural Trumpers. I still don't grasp what the hell it is they're after.
Big data, plot points from individuals, statistical regressions. That's what you need to make those claims. If not, it's personal anecdotes, personal anecdotes from someone who lived in the geographical region, yes, but just anecdotes.

Caracas, Jun 18 (Prensa Latina) The President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, called on the American people to stop the madness of his government to get involved in the war that Israel and the Islamic Republic of Iran are fighting today.
June 17, 2025 | 22:16
When participating in the Workshop of the Seven Transformations (7T) with the elected deputies on May 25, in the Ríos Reyna room of the Teresa Carreño Theater Cultural Complex, in Caracas, the ruler assured that “only the people of the United States can stop this madness.”I am calling on the American people, do you want another war, do you want the United States to be involved in the slaughter, in the destruction of Muslim, Iranian and Arab peoples? Maduro asked.
They want the United States to be marked as the initiator of the Third World War, he added, noting that this is the call he makes from “pacifist and Bolivarian Venezuela.”
The president called for that, from the streets, from all corners, from North to South and from East to West, in the American nation “a single voice be raised, no to war!”.
Maduro recalled the destruction and death every time the United States gets involved in a conflict in the Middle East as happened in Iraq, where a million people lost their lives, as well as in Libya and Afghanistan.
The head of state urged the countries that are powers in the region and the world to “sit down and force the Zionist state of (Benjamin) Netanyahu to stop its attacks and respect international law.”
I call on all the governments of the new powers: China, Russia, Turkey, the countries of the Gulf Council, the nations of the Global South, but especially the Muslim countries, to “support and accompany the Islamic Republic of Iran in its struggle for peace,” he emphasized.
"That has to be the way, not the way of escalation of violence, of deaths, of bombs, no,” he reaffirmed.
He also reiterated his call to the Jewish people to stop the war and to Netanyahu to "stop this madness of hellish war with all neighboring countries and of wanting to conquer and colonize the entire Middle East and Western Asia."
It is a Hitlerite, supremacist and Nazi idea, which must be defeated by the Global South, he stressed.
About the 7T Workshop, the ruler proposed the creation of a Latin American and Caribbean Parliamentary Political School, named after the Venezuelan revolutionary David Nieves Banchs.
The objective of this center would be to contribute to the formation of political leaders, he said, and he called on revolutionary parliamentarians to prepare to become “a sounding board for People's Power.”

Update of my $65 4tb nvmes 🤣🤪
So i'm testing one of the drives I got on amazon using an old computer. It started off promising, didn't get any errors when formating the drive, write speed using a usb adapter at 25mb/s... Then it dropped off to 7mb/s and the expected time shot up from 40hours to 156h🤣
I'm going to let it run over night and see what happens in the morning. If I can get it to show 4tb without error I might still keep them to test out my geekworm pi nas, otherwise back to amazon you go!

I ended up putting such a flaky drive in a bag and wrapping a flexible icepack around it.
Not a great solution, but kinda good enough to get some data off of it.
LOL
You could buy 20 of them and make a RAID. So their cache sizes add up, and the total crawl speed as well 😆
This is the usual behaviour of ultra cheap flash drives.
They have some cache to show a 'good' performance at the beginning, if your measurement goes only a very short time. Then only crawl.
$65 for 4tb? they're almost certainly fake crap. just got done giving someone the bad news on some similarly-priced sd and ssd they bought off ebay.

Laptop left charging on bed causes house fire in Bendigo
Ms Robinson said the laptop was an 18-month old AppleMac Pro and it had started to lose charge more often in the lead up to the fire."It seemed to be going flat a lot, which can identify a faulty battery," Ms Robinson.
Fire Rescue Victoria commander Craig Houlahan attended the blaze.
"It was clear the fire had actually started from the bed," he said.
"It was quite obvious with the development of the fire that it was the laptop, because of the battery."

This is such nonsense. Netanyahu has been trying non-stop to get the US to attack Iraq and Iran for literally 30 years. And the US kept saying no.
The US is not benefiting from having all their regional assets and oil fields blown up by Iranian missiles. The only party which does not care about this whatsoever is of course Israel. The cart and the horse keep getting switched around.

‘No Kings’ was biggest protest in U.S. history: data analyst
The “No Kings” protests in every state may have been the biggest day of demonstrations in American history, a data analyst has suggested.
“Based on hundreds of crowd-sourced records of No Kings Day event turnout, and extrapolating for the cities where we don’t have data yet, it looks like roughly 4-6m people protested Trump across the U.S. yesterday,” independent data journalist G Elliott posted to X Sunday.
For reference, that’d mean Saturday’s demonstrations featured 1-2% of the total population of 340 million taking to the streets in more than 2,000 cities to voice their opposition to the increasingly authoritarian, far-right policies the president has pursued since assuming office for the second time.

MakeMKV down - cant find firmware to flash Verbatim 43888
Hi all,
I recently bought a Verbatim 43888. Went to rip my first disc, which is just a regular DVD. But MakeMKV isn't even able to detect the disc. I checked a few forums which all recommend Makemkv forums, however the site seems to be down.
I may need to rollback the firmware from version 1.05 to 1.03. Has anyone else had experience with this issue? Can it be done using linux?
I know the drive is working because I can see the video/audio files. It also works with Handbrake.
Cheers
Here you go 😀 Link
It doesn’t call home to makemkv so OP is played by this again, he/she won’t have this issue.

And a bunch of dronies in other threads are going on about how "authoritarian" insert X US enemy country is.
No other country has committed more atrocities and wreaked more havoc on the world than the US in the 20-21st centuries.
Yes, that is exactly what this is.
It is simultaneously true that:
- The USA has been the global hegemon for almost a century. During this time it has committed serious crimes and needlessly caused many civilian deaths in pursuit of its political goals. To make matters worse, the current US President is overtly antidemocratic and credibly threatening allies and enemies alike.
AND
- The regime in Iran is overtly theocratic -- and therefore fundamentally disconnected from reality. Its leaders, their media, and as such some of society at large has a Blame-Everyone-Else mentality that MAGA would find extreme. They honestly, truly, deeply believe that God will relieve their suffering only if they can kill all the evil Jews in the Holy Land, and restore the Just rule of Islam (which they happen to speak for). And nukes is the only realistic way they can do that.
You dronies are so transparent. You only come out to decry X country as soon as the US or its vassals attacks it. Then its all both sides bad.
No country is perfect, but Iran is doing what very few countries are brave enough to do rn, and defending themselves from the child-killing scourge of the middle east.
Even if you oppose Iran's sovereignty or its theocracy, you'll have to admit that Iran's theocracy does far less harm than any given western country does.
I did not mean to imply any moral equivalence between Iran and the USA.
Iran is a genocidal apocalyptic religious autocracy. It is dangerous to modern civilization.
The USA is (at present though less so recently) a liberal pluralistic Democracy, where the excesses of one person or group tend to get moderated.
They are not the same.
The US has commited genocide against Koreans (both sides of the parallel), Vietnamese, Iraqi, Palestinian, and far, far more. The US is currently trying to topple Iran because Iran is refusing to play ball with the genocidal US Empire. The US Empire is by far the worst state on the planet, without it the fascist Entity engaged in current war with Iran would not exist and Palestine would be free.
This is extremely naive. Iran has its problems, but there's no comparison, the US is not a democracy and is the active creator of genocide around the world today. If Iran was toppled, conditions for Iranians and Palestinians would get far worse, not better.
Pure orientalism / white = good.
The USA isn't a democracy either, its a capitalist dictatorship
Your "pluralistic liberal democracy" is the most evil empire in world history.
You could really left in "since 1945".
Pre 1945 there are some good contestants for more atrocities and more havoc.
There's certainly a lot after that, but this Smedley Butler quote is from 1935:
I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street. I helped purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras right for the American fruit companies in 1903. In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested. Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents.
And of course there's the native american genocide, unparalleled in history, which mostly took place in the 1800s.

Hidden valley
Another short but steep hike in eastern Jasper National Park, this hike takes you to a valley nestled under Roche Miette before you get to the bald up top. Much less intimidating than the wall on Morro Peak, but just as physical. One ladder section is easily climbed along the way and you may see some mountain goats while you’re up there! Hopefully he doesn’t see you eat it on the muddy slope like he did for me! At the trailhead is a great spot to watch Bighorn as well.
The ladder chained to the rock face leads to a slippery section made easier by the heavy duty chains running the length of it.
Looking back towards the Athabasca river valley below. The trail is in the lower valley and not on top of the ridgeline.
A look back towards the highway shows how quickly this trail rises before entering the canyon. The Athabasca river valley sprawls below.

All 17 fired vaccine advisors unite to blast RFK Jr.’s “destabilizing decisions”
All 17 experts ousted from the federal vaccine advisory committee have spoken out about the drastic changes that anti-vaccine advocate and current US health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has made since taking office. Those changes include unilaterally restricting access to COVID-19 vaccines and summarily firing the entire Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), which had guided federal vaccine policies for more than 60 years.
"We are deeply concerned that these destabilizing decisions, made without clear rationale, may roll back the achievements of US immunization policy, impact people’s access to lifesaving vaccines, and ultimately put US families at risk of dangerous and preventable illnesses," the fired experts write in an editorial published in JAMA.

I 100% agree with you about Clearview and Palantir. Really, 1,000%.
Putin, on the other hand, has passed his peak unless he's gong to get the nukes out. His potential at this point is simply how much longer he is around to keep perpetuating his "3 day war." Which is not nothing. The guy needs to go the fuck away, and the US justification for using nukes in Japan was that forcing a surrender via attack against civilian targets prevented a years-long slog and invasion. Well, here we are again. Justify whatever is needed to ensure he falls out a window one day this week. The power vacuum without Prighozin around is just going to revert to 1992 style robber barons anyway. It always would. There's never been an alternative to that.
🙄, but I’ll only address:
the US justification for using nukes in Japan was that forcing a surrender via attack against civilian targets prevented a years-long slog and invasion.
That was the US’s public-facing narrative, not its actual justifications. Japan was already ready to surrender at that point, but the US was worried that Japan might surrender to the USSR instead, and the US wanted an unconditional surrender, not one with conditions. It also wanted to scare the living shit out of the USSR, to discourage it from further spreading its influence. And it wanted to test the bomb on a city that had been left intentionally undamaged during the war, namely Hiroshima, for its own nuclear weapons research & development.
The company I work for is using software sold by palantir.
The software itself is benign, and quite clever and useful, but regardless it feels like we’ve made a deal with the devil to me.

[Announcement] How Secrets of the Atlas Launch Went
We wanted to give an update talking about how the launch went and what we're immediately working on.
Over the weekend we launched Path of Exile: Secrets of the Atlas. We are so thrilled to see the number of people who joined us for launch day. Welcome back, Exiles!
Starting with the elephant in the room, unfortunately primarily our European servers but also servers across the globe have been facing a barrage of DDOS attacks. We understand that this issue has ruined such an anticipated launch for many players. This is unacceptable service and we are deeply sorry. We want to assure you that we are taking this very seriously and it is the highest priority problem for our company to solve. Due to the nature of these attacks, we're unable to provide a timeframe on when it will be resolved but we do want to acknowledge that we do see the issue and are doing everything we can to mitigate this.
Another thing we caught just prior to the launch was an issue with our final console builds which did not affect our internal realms so couldn't have been caught sooner than it was. Because this required brand new builds to be created, tested and then certified, this process took quite a long time to fix, but the console realms are now fully operational and players are able to login and play. We are implementing measures to prevent this occurring in the future.
While our system administration and backend team address the issues with the servers, our development team continues to monitor feedback. Currently the leading issue we're looking to address with the league is that a number of Mercenary skills, especially once you get to the middle of the campaign start to deal overwhelming amounts of damage to the player, often instantly killing you, you should expect a patch in the near future that puts all these skills more in line. This will not affect the Mercenary balance when they are your ally.
Additionally we're looking at making some improvements to the Memory Skills granted in maps influenced by The Originator, we'll have more updates on this later this week.
We also just wanted to give a huge thank you to all our players, be it those who have returned to play Path of Exile after a year with no expansions, and all those who are new to the game.
We're very excited to not only once again be delivering content, but playing the game alongside you all.
Thank you Exiles!

While Napster did get decked hard a long while ago, it's still a well known cultural icon, so some company was inevitably going to buy the rights to its branding/trademarks after it ate dirt to attract attention to whatever product they decide to slap it on.
The same thing kinda happened to Atari. That company got burned to a crisp by Nintendo and Sega after the 2600, but some nobodies bought it and things keep having the Atari logo even today because it was a well known brand. It sucked ass and failed... but we remember it.

It's long but worth checking out Robert Evans BTB episode: in which "Robert sits down with David Bell to discuss how a consortium of rich failsons got together to fund a network of right wing think tanks and shift American culture in a fun new direction. (note: it was not actually fun at all)."
The tl;dr is basically the rich hated FDRs New Deal and immediately set to work to undo everything he did.
They do not share our American values (life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness). They do not value freedoms (speech, press, religion, etc) the same way that many of us do. They want a return to the gilded age with them as the robber barons and gentry and everyone else as a permanently toiling underclass.
It's worth remembering that one of the primary ghouls/traitors responsible for the attempted overthrow of our government on J6 was Roger Stone, the same traitorous ratfucker who began his career working for Nixon and has a fucking Nixon tattoo on his back. It's really impossible to overstate just how fuckin' bad these people are and they're winning.

I feel like a true reckoning after the first Civil War never happened. A whole bunch of traitors were allowed to go home, heads held high, and assume the reigns of power. The proceeded to rewrite the memory of what happened. Making it a story of honor and tradition instead of hate and exploitation. Every one of them should've had their lands confiscated and their leaders hanged. The land should've been given to freed peoples as reparations, 40 acres and a mule and all that.

By just giving slaps on the wrist, the failsons of our society get to pass on their beliefs and resources to their children. We need to at least remove the latter. Their wealth can be used to fund our institutions, such as NOAA, CDC, FEMA, infrastructure, universal healthcare, and more.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad when anyone is on our side, it's always good to have powerful allies, and it is mildly interesting from an academic standpoint when wealthy people are anti-Trump. But her expression of support or dissent, even amplified in a newspaper ad, is no more impactful or valuable at the end of the day than yours or mine. Unless she is literally financing change (which doesnt include opinion piece ads) or has the ear of those in authority who can actually make change happen, her money, status and name mean nothing.
The headline may as well be your neighbor's cousin Darren yelled out of his window "go protest Trump". Like thanks for the moral support Darren, but why are we even talking about you?

They still likely control the company in a more abstract sense.
