If you truely think that things would have played out exactly the same in Gaza with Harris as POTUS, then it still comes down to two candidates last November, and every person knew that one of them would win. You could also argue that this is accelerationism, but to be fair, democrats take advantage of accelerationism all the time (e.g. "republicans have repealed reproductive rights, donate even more money to us so we can fight it" while letting things get worse and worse, barely putting up a fight to make long-lasting changes and indeed letting things get this bad so they can position themselves as the only "solution").

Edit: Unfortunate for us in the US, not necessarily unfortunate for the rest of the world in some aspects. I still think as a whole his influence and other actions probably still make him worse for the world, but there is a valid argument about nations growing less dependent on the US.
Hopefully in 3.5 years (or please God, less), the US will be knocked down a peg on the world stage, other nations have a more diverse and stable trade relationships, and maybe Trump's actions will help spark other countries into action against hard right politics to prevent the same thing from happening to them. To be clear, I voted for Harris, and I implored everyone I know to vote for Harris, for exactly the reasons you mentioned. I will always vote for the farthest-left candidate in the general, full-stop. I'm arguing that Harris gave no indication that she would defend Palestine or even recognize the genocide at all. Establishment Dems can't seem to get it through their heads that progressive policies are popular, so we keep getting general elections between an absolute monster and a neolib Dem saying, "Vote for me or you'll get the monster!" That might be the reality, but it's not a platform.
I live in a blue state, and I had people around me arguing that whether they voted third-party or didn't vote at all, they would be able to sleep at night knowing that A. they didn't vote for genocide and B. the state would go blue anyway. I don't agree with that position at all. I want third parties to be represented in the US, but that starts at the local level and in the primaries. By the general election it's too late and we realistically have two options. I also believe that shutting down any criticism of the Dem candidate (e.g. a now-banned user told me to kill myself) is a good way to alienate people and discourage them from engaging with the process at all. The right has banned nuance from their discourse, and I refuse to allow the same thing to happen around me.

I'm not trying to say that Harris would have been good for Palestine, or even a good POTUS. I'm saying she was the less bad option overall in the election. I don't know that anything would be different with Israel had she won, but I think there was a better chance that she would have done something good over Trump doing something good. Like you said, local elections and primaries (when they're held, but that's separate from this overall conversation) are when to vote for different parties and more fringe candidates. …you should look into what this shit is doing to Ukraine. They’re quite difficult and tedious to intercept, and they are cheap enough that it’s not that hard to launch saturation attacks.
Put another way: if NK just converts a bunch of factories and cranks out, like, a quarter million of them over a few years (they’re very simple - I don’t think that’s an insane proposition, seriously), that becomes an existential conventional strike capability, especially if you factor in their artillery assets too. They could ruin every single military and industrial zone in SK in a single strike if they built up a stockpile like that. Seriously, hundreds to thousands of small weaponized UAVs per target where the target list is in the hundreds is not something that modern day IADS could hack - much less economically. The only systems that are going to be able to effectively deal with massed and sustained attacks like that are directed energy weapons, which are only now being rolled out operationally in relatively small numbers, and I’m not sure SK has a system like that ready for deployment.
That’s because Ukraine is stretched thin economically and militarily. Their economy is 10x smaller than Russia and has limited domestic production capabilities.
SK on the other hand, has significant existing defensive and has an economy over 50x NKs. Their 2% GDP military spending is bigger than NKs entire economy!
The only way the Shaheds can be a threat is if SK commanders fail to recognize them as a problem. I won’t discount naivety or incompetence but I’ll bet every military is paying close attention to what’s happening in Ukraine right now.
SK has a number of domestic drone manufacturers and has a growing defense sector, they are most certainly looking at ways to counter whatever NK has access to.
If the NK soldiers sent to Ukraine thought those drones were scary, think what would happen with an entire country of FPV pilots and the production capacity to match could do.
How so? The only reason they’re so deadly in Ukraine is because they don’t have the resources to adequately defend the huge front and they can’t invest sufficiently to produce a scalable defense.
By the time NK is able to field enough drones for anything close to saturation, SK would have stockpiled more than enough defensive options.
Only 150 or so Gepards have been sent to Ukraine. SK can build their own mobile AAA and can likely have thousands by the time NK has hundreds of drones.
How many Standard + SEARAM + ESSM + CIWS rounds do you think a single base and two surface flotillas could expend in a sustained saturation attack like that? Not how many in the magazines - how many can be effectively expended over a given span of time. Also, take into the account that a part of this strategy typically includes salting the mix with much more modern and capable and fast ASMs/AGMs.
Saturation attacks are the strategy the Soviet (and now Russian) Navy centers their doctrine upon for a reason. And that reason is the USN CVBG. Cheap, numerous drones make that strategy a lot more effective.
Why would you use a missile against a Shahed? Only if you weren’t prepared for that threat and haven’t updated your tactics. The future will be automated drones and use the guns for close range.
As for CIWS, I bet a software update can let it be much more efficient with ammo against slow moving targets. Let’s say 10 per drone, which would mean a Phalanx would be able to take down about 150 per magazine.
You basically need to have an extra layer of air defense to the existing model. Missiles for fast moving threats, drones and guns for the slower threats.
And how many weapons do you think NK can even produce? They have to import all their electronics and hardly have the expertise to improve the technology significantly.

I wrote a longer comment further down in this thread—the group of 100 I saw live on @LordHito’s stream was definitely violent—some had what appeared to be homemade smoke bombs, they lit fires, and smashed some windows.
However, I think this response is entirely justified and the police have definitely been more violent than the protestors.
I don’t disagree with anything they’ve done, I just think it is disingenuous to say they were a peaceful mob, even though that is what the news has been mostly showing.

I would like to point out a subtle piece of "reporting" that is not only inaccurate, but I believe in there in an attempt to "both sides" the issue and appease Trump.
Newsom and Trump officials exchanged barbs all weekend after Trump federalized and deployed the California National Guard in Los Angeles amid violent anti-ICE protests.
The protests, as evidenced by the livestreams of LA, were almost entirely non-violent. Violence shown was almost entirely ICE committing the violence, such as when they intentionally shot rubber bullets at an Australian reporter in order to scare her away from reporting.
Saying the protests were "violent" does nothing more than give Trump justification for sending troops in the first place. This is intentionally misleading reporting that does nothing but give Trump more cover, possibly in an attempt to "both sides" the issue in case Trump's goons come knocking.

I like the business model of selling subscriptions to the artists but giving them 100% of proceedings quite a lot, but it would be nice if they for example only had to pay a monthly fee once sales surpassed €10, or if they could sell a limited amount of tracks for free in order to test the waters before putting all their music out for sale.

Flip the equation here. The subscription is something to fund development of the platform. So anyone that wants to have a viable libre alternative to Spotify that can be useful to all indie artists should consider paying for it, even if they are not intending to sell stuff.

The world's income per capita is around $10000 a year. In South Europe is 25k€/year. In Northern Europe, 55k€/year. In the United States, $80k/year.
120 dollars per year is 0.5 percent of the income of the average citizen living in the (relatively) poorer part of developed world. That means that are plenty of people who can afford it, and it's not just the top of the top.
You have to think about disposable income, after taxes, rent/housing, food and all other essential services.
This is a leisure/personal project expense. And the disposable income for that tend to be 30% of net income at most.
It would be more like a 2%. Which may not sound like much. But it's same as saying you can do 50 things a year and this is one of those 50 things.
Anyway, I still think that price tag is too much, I don't think there would be a lot of people really willing to spend that for a service others provide for free with a bigger platform, or that you can do it by yourself cheaper if you want to go to an alternative route.

We're talking about one guy that is building a service that is 100% FOSS, and who currently has (according to the article) 300 musicians on the platform. Even if them all become paying subscribers, we are talking about something on the order of $3000/month. No one is going to become a "rich dude in San Francisco" because of that.
Even if he gets 10 times as many people paying, we are still talking about income that is less than what a senior developer would be making by slinging code at Big Tech. And if he got to the point where there that many people using his service, you can bet that would also mean more competition in the space. With the difference that no one would be able to build a monopoly around it because the service is FOSS and built on top of open protocols.

Once they breach the blockade yes arguably though with only aid that gets more complex. Folks have been suing the gov about the Safe Third a country agreement since 2005 - opposition isn't new. And yes, the courts did strike it down but the gov appealed, and it's still under review.

It's a huge disaster in the making. There's probably a game theory model that explains what's happening but damned if i know it. AI is a trap.
At the beginning of LLMs as a consumer tech phase, the big tech companies believed that they would soon generate synthetic data without human labor costs. But synthetic data caused model collapse when used as training data. So they still need humans.
But now their competitors are using scrapers and summarizers and those are expensive so they have to extract more value from search traffic and that means fewer referrals to sites. Fewer referrals to sites reduces original content and leadabto less traffic and training data for their models.
The only two ways out are to create an international regulatory body ornto break up facebook, microspft, and google.
google search has been trash even before llms, i believe its one of the reasons chatgpt got so much traction. first 2 pages are just generic slop with paywalled or ad-infested content.
i switched to kagi 2 years ago and its has relevant results on page 1 that i won’t get in google even after 10s of pages. plus i don’t bombed with ads for that term for weeks.

One of the problems that the major news outlets have is that they repeat each other. It's not merely an issue of AI compiling news stories, but that on top of the fact that all of these newspapers are doing hardly any research. For example, if you live in a town that's not too large, there might only be one local paper, and they might send out reporters to local events. Obviously you would then go to that newspaper if you wanted to learn about local events, because they are adding explicit value.
But if you're trying to read about national politics, a lot of the information is going to be the same in a lot of the newspapers. Which means nobody cares about the newspaper itself. And this is a creation of the newspaper's own decision making over the past few decades.
I'd say their decision making was mostly forced by their drop in ad revenue and subscriptions forced by the internet.
Though I do wish that someone would make a Spotify for news so that I could pay once and get access to all of them and at least give them 10 cents per article or something, because I will never pay the subscription cost any are asking.
As much as I'd like to support them, the price to utility ratio is way the fuck off at the prices they ask now.
It's also the speed of news now. When you had a edition a day in print there was time to do research.
Now with instant publishing on the web it's more important to get the basic story out fast. With the hope it's the one that sites like reddit pickup.
Most news sites ask me to consent to google tracking or pay, neither of which am I prepared to do in almost all cases. I am sure I am not alone in this. Their decision to align with google in this way is more than a turn off, it is an indication of their untrustworthiness.
I shouldn't need to explain why I do everything I can to avoid being tracked by the likes of google. The idea that I will pay to be subject to propaganda died with the 20th century. If news outlets want my eyes on their pages they need to come up with a way to make it worth my time.
We need new search. Really we need a new web.
Blockchain's immutability might serve a public record of 'news', even moreso if combined with certificate verified identity on information disseminating 'social' media. The blockchain could actually be useful in this case. You don't have to link your irl identity to your internet identity everywhere, but it might not be a bad idea in the areas of information disseminating social media. These are just idle thoughts.
Edit - I saw a post today purporting to be a twitter screen grab of a James Woods post with a reply. The James Woods post was a screengrab of a video, supposedly of the current LA riots, with a comment along the lines of: Democrats can't talk about peaceful protest and support this. Following this was a reply saying 'this video is from 2020'.
I have no idea if either or both of these tweets happened, if the video was from 2020, or if either person were who they said they were! With the blockchain's immutability you could verify all of this automatically, and algorithmically reduce the reach of repeat offenders' posts.
There is a lot of value in this in terms of public discourse.
Similar processes could happen with both scientific/academic papers and government policy v. outcomes.
It might change the nature of the public debate.
With what passes for news these days at most outlets I can't say I feel too bad for them that someone else beat them at their own game of feeding the masses surface level doom scrolling slop for engagement and ad impressions.
Hell, a large chunk of the junk being put out by these same outlets is trash written by the AI solutions they are paying for. Probably solutions from the likes of Google that is giving it to them at both ends.
Once the snake finishes eating its own tail maybe the good reporters will still have somewhere that pays them for the good work they do.

It was never going to be a liberal government. The rule is conservative dreck, make no mistake, but the norm was already for burkinis and other such swimsuits to be worn. It's not a radical departure from extant behavior.
My concern, going forward, is more towards whether the government will resolve itself in a reasonably democratic way.
I'm not holding out hopes for a Tunisia, but a Jordan or Lebanon might be reasonable to cross one's fingers for.

I mean I wouldn't call it a beacon of democracy, but all things are relative. I picked one of the more reasonable polities in MENA with a mostly-functioning multiparty system. The alternative would've been saying I hoped for Turkiye, but, uh, considering Erdogan's behavior, I wasn't sure I wanted to make that comparison as a positive.
My point is simply that there is still hope for Syria to improve into something better than it was - and certainly better than some immensely calcified repressive regime like Iran or the Saudis, and that this... immensely distasteful conservative dreck does not necessarily sink that hope.
We look for Syria to take a step forward, not to become Sweden in a decade (though that would, obviously, also be immensely welcome; just less likely). Institutions are built a year at a time, a battle at a time, not all once.

Let’s not forget the obsession of conservatives and even liberals with banning hijabs and niqabs in the western world under the guise of "liberating“ women. If you go to hotels it’s gonna be different because that’s where all the rich locals will go to be on their own and usually they have a more "western" lifestyle. To illustrate, not even in hotels in Saudi Arabia would they enforce such a dress code (we’re talking about luxury hotels here) because money talks.

Update of my $65 4tb nvmes 🤣🤪
So i'm testing one of the drives I got on amazon using an old computer. It started off promising, didn't get any errors when formating the drive, write speed using a usb adapter at 25mb/s... Then it dropped off to 7mb/s and the expected time shot up from 40hours to 156h🤣
I'm going to let it run over night and see what happens in the morning. If I can get it to show 4tb without error I might still keep them to test out my geekworm pi nas, otherwise back to amazon you go!

Hi all,
I recently bought a Verbatim 43888. Went to rip my first disc, which is just a regular DVD. But MakeMKV isn't even able to detect the disc. I checked a few forums which all recommend Makemkv forums, however the site seems to be down.
I may need to rollback the firmware from version 1.05 to 1.03. Has anyone else had experience with this issue? Can it be done using linux?
I know the drive is working because I can see the video/audio files. It also works with Handbrake.

No country is perfect, but Iran is doing what very few countries are brave enough to do rn, and defending themselves from the child-killing scourge of the middle east.
Even if you oppose Iran's sovereignty or its theocracy, you'll have to admit that Iran's theocracy does far less harm than any given western country does.

The US is currently trying to topple Iran because Iran is refusing to play ball with the genocidal US Empire. The US Empire is by far the worst state on the planet, without it the fascist Entity engaged in current war with Iran would not exist and Palestine would be free.
This is extremely naive. Iran has its problems, but there's no comparison, the US is not a democracy and is the active creator of genocide around the world today. If Iran was toppled, conditions for Iranians and Palestinians would get far worse, not better.

Roche Miette as seen from Hidden Valley in Jasper National Park
Hidden valley
Another short but steep hike in eastern Jasper National Park, this hike takes you to a valley nestled under Roche Miette before you get to the bald up top. Much less intimidating than the wall on Morro Peak, but just as physical. One ladder section is easily climbed along the way and you may see some mountain goats while you’re up there! Hopefully he doesn’t see you eat it on the muddy slope like he did for me! At the trailhead is a great spot to watch Bighorn as well.
The ladder chained to the rock face leads to a slippery section made easier by the heavy duty chains running the length of it.

Ho dei pensieri forse un po’ confusi a riguardo, e certamente rifletterci e scriverci su a quest’ora non aiuta — nonostante questo sia a dire il vero proprio l’orario migliore possibile per scrivere cose di questo tipo, perché il lieve sonno mi porta inevitabilmente alla stesura di righe che nemmeno sotto effetto di droghe sarebbe possibile concepire — però diavolaccio… Se davvero devo avviarmi sulla strada del bedrotting professionale, portando buona parte delle giornate ad essere concettualmente assimilabili a questa mia ultima trascorsa, ci sono un paio di appunti da tenere in conto per massimizzare il valore dell’esperienza, soprattutto in chiave di ricorrenza medio-alta. ✋Innanzitutto, il top bedrotting dovrebbe essere visto con più grande passione; ossia, nel modo in cui a quanto pare diverse persone su Internet già fanno… e non nel modo su cui senza volerlo ripiego io, ossia come “piano B”, come “ops oggi mi sento così e quindi farò così perché non mi va di fare come al solito“. In effetti, il marcimento lettifero nella sua forma più pura altro non è che un momento di straordinaria connessione con il sublime attraverso attimi altrimenti normali, banali; è lo stato di esistenza che più precisamente di tutti gli altri si trova a metà tra la vita e la morte, l’ordine ed il caos; insomma, l’equilibrio perfetto che, se non fosse per la fame e in molti casi il dover pagare l’affitto, potrebbe rappresentare la modalità dell’essere ideale permanentemente per tutti gli esseri umani… con la sofferenza tangibile della specie che sarebbe estremamente più limitata come conseguenza, e tutte le guerre che si formerebbero per sempre (…così come lo sviluppo della società ed il mantenimento dei servizi, in realtà, ma è un piccolo prezzo da pagare a confronto dei grandi benefici per tutti). 🥰
Quindi, boh: a parte le digressioni, serve più convinzione, più integrità. Innanzitutto, dovrei forse programmare il bedrotting come attività fissa all’interno della mia giornata, non sindacabile, da onorare e rispettare senza se e senza ma; e che occupi quanto più tempo possibile dei miei momenti di veglia, idealmente, anche se ciò non è sempre possibile nella pratica. Probabilmente, poi, dovrei rifarmi il letto appena mi sveglio dopo la notte, o almeno poco prima di darmi al bedrotting per la prima volta nella giornata dopo essermi alzata… non perché io ora dalla sera alla pre-notte creda alla propaganda dei rifattisti (quelli che dicono che il letto va rifatto subito perché bla bla bla e per giunta è una forma mentis zzz…), ma perché indubbiamente è più comodo sprofondare nel letto ordinato e senza pieghe, rispetto allo schifo che diventa durante la notte di sonno turbato, non prendiamoci in giro. 🌚
Questi due punti, dopo una piccola riflessione, mi appaiono veramente come il minimo da tenere in considerazione per un’esperienza di marciscenza spirituale decente. Ma, ovviamente si può, e probabilmente si deve, fare ancora di meglio… E dunque, da un lato temo di dover ammettere che bisogna ogni giorno lavarsi, per bene e subito, per dedicarsi alla funzione… e dall’altro bisogna porre un po’ di attenzione anche nel po’ di vestiario che si indossa durante la cosa. Lo sappiamo come questi giorni più scarichi portano a viziarci — e a viziarmi, personalmente, con io in particolare che finisco per lavarmi solo ben dopo pranzo, per poi indossare magliette e pantaloni veramente a casaccio, sotto l’influenza del diktat per cui sarebbe sconveniente tenere dentro casa quegli indumenti di maggior pregio estetico e morale che invece sarebbero meglio riservati solo per uscire. Ma, tra la puzza di ascelle dormite, e i vestiti con sopra i pallini di cotone consumati, l’anima ne soffre… e poi, che figura ci si fa con gli spiriti delle pareti che ci guardano da molto (molto) vicino durante la giornata in casa? 🪱

Ora, però, per concludere, un piccolo momento di rovescio della medaglia, che sento essere necessario anche se a molti non farà affatto piacere… Se vi considerate appassionati di bedrotting, o comunque in qualche modo siete praticanti più o meno abituali dell’attività, ma quello che ho detto qui vi sembra assurdo, fuori misura, o comunque non ne considerereste nemmeno mai la semplice idea di applicazione… ahimè, voi siete probabilmente nella trappola della marciscenza non introspettiva, la variante con buona ragione strettamente criticata persino dal Consiglio Assoluto degli Stellari. Oh, per carità: nessuno è perfetto, menchemeno io che stavolta mi permetto di fare questa predica (in parte auto-predica) che mi rendo conto essere a dir poco sconclusionata… però quantomeno mantenete la mente aperta a nuove formule di riposo più arricchenti del sé, suvvia! 😳

Show up to protests and try to leave water/snacks for police, national guard, and first responders, then honestly the best thing to do would be to sit down silently, wave the American flag, and not leave until he's gone. No screaming, no chants. Provide the world with nothing but images of peaceful, patriotic protestors. Silent, peaceful, generous, but unyielding.
Set up supply lines, and get comfy.
If that doesn't work, split into as many groups of 1000+ as you can to overwhelm police, overrun them, and make them understand what they're up against.

I’m watching the Los Angeles reaction to ICE raids with trepidation and regret. Three years ago I taught a class at Harvard on the “theater of protest”— designed to help people understand why so many protests turn out to be Republican campaign videos working directly against the interests of the original protest.
A protest is an invitation to a better world. It’s a ceremony. No one accepts a ceremonial invitation when they’re being screamed at. More important you have to know who the real audience Of the protestis. The audience is NEVER the police, the politicians, the Board of supervisors, The Congress,etc. The audience is always the American people, who are trying to decide who they can trust; who will not embarrass them. If you win them, you win power at the box office And power to make positive change.Everything else is a waste. There are a few ways to get there.
Number 1 let women organize the event. They’re more collaborative. They’re more inclusive, and they don’t generally bring the undertones of violence men do. 2 appoint monitors, give them yellow, vests and whistles. At the first sign of violence, they blow the whistles and the real protester sit down. Let the police take out their aggression on the anarchists and the provocateurs trying to discredit the movement. Number 3 dress like you’re going to church. It’s hard to be painted as a hoodlum When you’re dressed in clean Presentable clothes. They don’t have to be fancy they just signal the respect for the occasion that you want to transmit to the audience.Number 4, make your protest silent. Demonstrate your discipline to the American people.Let signs do the talking. Number 5 go home at night. In the dark, you can’t tell the cops from the killers. Come back at Dawn fresh and rested. I have great fear that Trump’s staging with the National Guard and maybe the Marines is designed to clash with anarchists who are playing into his hands and offering him the opportunity to declare an insurrection. It’s such a waste and it’s only because we haven’t thought things through strategically. Nothing I thought of is particularly original. It was all learned by watching the early civil rights protests in the 50s and 60s. And it was the discipline and courage of African-Americans that drew such a clear line in the American sand that people were forced to take sides and that produced the civil rights act. .The American people are watching and once again if we behave in ways that can be misinterpreted, we’ll see this explained to the public in Republican campaign videos benefiting the very people who started this. Wake up. Vent at home. In public practice discipline and self control. It takes much more courage.

in reply to Today • • •This should definitely be the approach for the first phase of protesting, but I fear this is also missing the part where fascists — including the oligarch owned media — will actively produce and disseminate disinformation to justify their crimes, regardless of how peaceful and disciplined protesters are. I fear fascists will continue escalating to mass murder either way.
Remember "They're eating cats and dogs" or "kitty litter in schools" or "migrant caravan"?
In the age of disinformation, facing a fascist mass murder, protesters need to be prepared for "peaceful" to turn into Tiananmen square, at which point there's no reason to congregate around the square anymore; you need to switch gears and go guerrilla warfare. Obviously this should never be done anywhere near a protest. It should never be waged against civilians/MAGA voters, cops, troops, or federal agents. It should only ever be targeted specifically at the fascist leadership, and their immediate senior accomplices. Wasting time or effort on low value targets is counterproductive.

And if you leave every time they tell you leave, they’ll learn that they can just ban you entirely from protesting because what are you gonna do about it?
So you end up staying and the police will break up your protest. They will say that you were throwing bottles or stones, you can deny it but all conservative and some liberal media will report anyway that that’s how it escalated. You will be at risk of being beaten, inhaling tear gas, being shot at, arrested, you might get sentenced to a fine, community service, or even jail time. And no one will come to your defense because you asked for it by escalating the protest.
That’s why protests are escalating, because the police repeatedly attacks peaceful protesters for no good reason. For the police, you are the enemy, because they report to the government, and they act to protect the government, not you as a citizen.
Source of all this: I have been going to Palestine protest for the better part of my adulthood and have witnessed this way too many times during all kinds of administrations, especially since the genocide started.
