KDE Plasma Mobile — The Dev Log: April 2024 - June 2025
This blog post is already quite long, so it will omit changes merged for Plasma 6.5 (releasing in October, to be announced in a future post).
With the Plasma 6.2 release, we moved Plasma Dialer and Spacebar to the Plasma release cycle, allowing us to have consistent releases of the two apps. This completes our year long move to having all Plasma Mobile related projects released as part of wider KDE releases, streamlining the work for distributions and taking a load off us on having to maintain a separate release cycle!
In other news, a Fedora spin for Plasma Mobile was released! It will only be targeting devices that can currently boot Fedora (i.e. not ARM phones), but is very exciting nonetheless!
The Dev Log: April 2024 - June 2025
The Plasma Mobile team is happy to announce the developments in the project over the past few months! Housekeeping This blog post was completed much later than originally planned. In the meantime, several releases have taken place:The Dev Log: April 2024 - June 2025

The [Council of Europe] Commissioner asks the German authorities to uphold freedom of expression and peaceful assembly in the context of the conflict in Gaza
cross-posted from: feddit.org/post/14434622
cross-posted from: feddit.org/post/14434560
[Letter sent on the 06th of June and made public today]Dear Minister,
My mandate is to foster the effective observance of human rights in all member states of the Council of Europe. An important part of my work is to engage in dialogue with the governments and parliaments
of member states, and to assist them in addressing possible shortcomings in their laws and practices.I write in relation to measures taken by the German authorities that restrict freedom of expression and freedom of peaceful assembly of persons protesting in the context of the conflict in Gaza.
Freedom of peaceful assembly
It is my understanding that since February 2025, the Berlin authorities have imposed restrictions on the
use of the Arabic language and cultural symbols in the context of the protests. In some cases, such as an assembly in Berlin on 15 May 2025, marches have been restricted to stationary gatherings.
Furthermore, protestors were allegedly subject to intrusive surveillance, online or in person, and arbitrary police checks.I am also concerned by reports of excessive use of force by police against protesters, including minors, sometimes leading to injuries. The use of force by law enforcement officials including during protests must comply with the principles of non-discrimination, legality, necessity and proportionality, and precaution. Incidents of excessive use of force need to be effectively investigated, those responsible should be sanctioned in an appropriate manner and victims should be informed about possible remedies. To facilitate accountability, law enforcement officials should always display a visible and easily recognisable form of identification during assemblies, which reportedly has not always been the
case during some of the latest demonstrations.I further have to observe that over a number of years protests on Nakba commemoration day, particularly in Berlin, have been suppressed. For instance, in 2024, protests were reportedly met with
excessive use of force by the police, resulting in arrests and injuries among participants. Peaceful protesters were reportedly arrested, and criminal law provisions were applied to expressions of support
for Palestine.I draw your attention to the Guidelines on Peaceful Assembly prepared by the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission) and the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (OSCE/ODIHR). They outline that content-based restrictions on assembly must be subject to the most serious scrutiny: freedom of peaceful assembly also protects demonstrations that may annoy or cause offence to persons opposed to the ideas or claims that it is seeking to promote. Any measures interfering with freedom of peaceful assembly and expression other than in cases of
incitement to violence or rejection of democratic principles do a disservice to democracy and may even endanger it.Freedom of expression
Restrictions on freedom of expression have also reportedly been identified in such contexts as universities, arts and culture institutions, and schools. Furthermore, allegedly there have been attempts to deport foreign nationals in relation to their participation in protests and other forms of expression regarding the conflict in Gaza.
I understand that restrictions have been justified on the basis that events, symbols, or other forms of expression “disrupt public order” or “disturb public peace”. The case-law of the European Court of Human Rights’ (the Court) establishes that freedom of expression “applies not only to ‘information’ and ‘ideas’ that are favourably received, regarded as inoffensive, or which leave one indifferent […] - it implies pluralism, tolerance and openness, without which there is no ‘democratic society’”. In assessing the necessity of the interference, member states have little scope to impose restrictions on political speech or on debate on matters of public interest, unless the views expressed comprise incitements to violence, and must always carry out such an assessment case by case.
I observe that other justifications invoked for the restrictions on rights include the prevention of antisemitism. I note with concern reports indicating that the working definition of antisemitism of the
International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) has been interpreted by some German authorities in ways which lead to the blanket classification of criticism of Israel as antisemitic. In that
regard, I urge you to be vigilant that the IHRA working definition is not distorted, instrumentalised or misapplied to stifle freedom of expression and legitimate criticism, including of the state of Israel.More generally, the Court’s case law and the Council of Europe standards and guidance on freedom of expression, hate speech and hate crime (among others, Recommendation CM/Rec(2022)16 of the
Committee of Ministers to member States on combating hate speech and, ECRI General Policy Recommendation N°15 on Combatting Hate Speech), provide the necessary framework for calibrating restrictions which must respect the principles of legality, necessity, roportionality and non-discrimination.In conclusion, I recall that member states have both an obligation to refrain from undue interference with human rights and also positive obligations to safeguard these rights by securing their effective enjoyment for everyone, at all levels of government. I therefore respectfully ask you to ensure the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly for all and to refrain from measures that discriminate against persons based on their political or other opinion, religion or belief, ethnic origin, nationality or
migration status.I stand ready to continue our constructive dialogue on this and other human rights issues in Germany.___

Poland’s Third Way alliance confirms split but remains within Tusk’s ruling coalition
The two parties that make up the Third Way (Trzecia Droga), which is part of Poland’s ruling coalition, have confirmed that they are splitting and will stand separately at the next elections.
The decision was confirmed in statements issued last night and this morning by the leaders of the two parties that make up the alliance: Szymon Hołownia of the centrist Poland 2050 (Polska 2050) and Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz of the centre-right Polish People’s Party (PSL).
The Third Way was formed two years ago, when PSL and Poland 2050 were in opposition. They retained their separate identities as parties but stood candidates on joint electoral lists at the October 2023 parliamentary elections, where they together won 14.4% of the vote.
That placed them third, behind the national-conservative Law and Justice (PiS, 35.4%) and centrist Civic Coalition (KO, 30.7%) and ahead of The Left (Lewica, 8.6%).
After those elections, KO, the Third Way and The Left formed a new coalition government, led by KO leader Donald Tusk, that removed PiS from power after eight years in office. It has ruled the country ever since.
Kosiniak-Kamysz serves as deputy prime minister and defence minister in the government, while Hołownia is the speaker of Sejm, the more powerful lower house of parliament.
PSL and Poland 2050 formed separate caucuses in parliament, with each currently having 32 MPs in the 460-seat Sejm.
But they continued to stand jointly as the Third Way in subsequent elections. At the April 2024 local elections, the Third Way won 14.3% of the vote. However, at the European elections that took place two months later, its share fell to just 6.9%.
In this year’s presidential election, PSL agreed to support the candidacy of Hołownia, but he won a disappointing 5% of the vote in the first round, finishing fifth. That was significantly worse than his presidential run as an independent in 2020, when he finished third with 13.9%.
Since the most recent presidential elections, rumours have circulated that PSL and Poland 2050 might decide to separate.
The two parties have not always been natural allies, with PSL taking more conservative positions on issues such as abortion and same-sex partnerships and Poland 2050 placing stronger emphasis on climate policies than its partner.
On Tuesday evening, PSL’s leadership met to discuss the best path forward. Afterwards, before any official announcement had been made, Hołownia issued a statement saying that his party “accepts the decision of our coalition partner PSL to effectively end the Third Way project”.
He said that Poland 2050 was “determined to work constructively with our partners” going forward, but was also felt “sincere political joy at the prospect of running independently in the next elections”.
Subsequently, leading PSL figures, including party spokesman Miłosz Motyka, noted that no resolution had been formally adopted on ending the Third Way alliance. That prompted questions over whether what Hołownia had written was accurate.
However, on Wednesday, Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed the split, telling broadcaster Radio Zet that the Third Way “is behind us, it has reached the end”.
The announcement was “supposed to be a bit different”, he added. “We had a discussion yesterday; Poland 2050 will have a discussion on 28 June. Then we were supposed to come out together and say that this stage is closed. [But] when there are 150 people in the room, it is difficult to keep everything absolutely sterile.”
After this month’s presidential election run-off was won by PiS-backed candidate Karol Nawrocki – who defeated KO deputy leader Rafał Trzaskowski – there were questions over whether and how the government would be able to rule with a hostile president and his power of veto.
PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński called for Tusk’s administration to step down and be replaced by an “apolitical technical government”. Figures from his party appealed to PSL, the most conservative element of the ruling coalition, to join them in bringing down the government.
However, at a vote of confidence in the government called by Tusk last week, he emerged triumphant, with all his coalition partners – PSL, Poland 2050 and The Left – joining KO in voting in favour.
The next elections scheduled in Poland are parliamentary ones that are due to take place in autumn 2027. If PSL and Poland 2050 stand as individual parties, they would have to win at least 5% of vote to enter parliament. If they stand as part of a coalition, the threshold is 8%.

EU unveils plans to bypass Hungary and Slovakia vetoes on Russian gas imports ban
The European Union has unveiled plans to legally bypass Hungary and Slovakia to ban Russian gas imports by 2027, using trade and energy laws that avoid national vetoes.
Slovakia and Hungary, which have sought to maintain close political ties with Russia, say switching to alternatives would increase energy prices. They have vowed to block sanctions on Russian energy, which require unanimous approval from all EU countries, and have opposed the ban.
The Commission based its proposed ban on EU trade and energy law to get around this, relying on support from most countries and a majority of the European Parliament.
First, imports would be banned from January 1, 2026, under any Russian pipeline gas and LNG contracts signed during the remainder of this year.
Imports under short-term Russian gas deals—those lasting less than one year—signed before June 17, 2025, would be banned from June 17 next year.
Finally, imports under existing long-term Russian contracts would be banned from January 1, 2028, effectively ending the EU's use of Russian gas by this date, the Commission said.
Hungary and Slovakia, which still import Russian gas via pipeline and have opposed the EU plans, would have until January 1, 2028, to end their imports, including those on short-term contracts.
“When the legislation is passed, all countries, of course, has to apply to it, and if they don't, then there will be legal consequences, like with any other legislation in the European Union,” Dan Jørgensen, European Commissioner for Energy and Housing said.
Russia loses market
The EU would also gradually ban liquid natural gas (LNG) terminals from providing services to Russian customers, and companies importing Russian gas would have to disclose information on their contracts to EU and national authorities.
On Monday, EU energy commissioner Dan Jørgensen said that the measures were designed to be legally strong enough for companies to invoke the contractual clause of “force majeure”–an unforeseeable event–to break their Russian gas contracts.
About 19% of Europe’s gas still comes from Russia via the TurkStream pipeline and LNG shipments, down from roughly 45% before 2022.
Companies, including TotalEnergies and Spain’s Naturgy, have Russian LNG contracts extending into the 2030s.
To replace Russian supplies, the EU has signaled it will expand clean energy and could import more LNG from the U.S.
Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands and France import Russian LNG but have all said they fully support the ban, emphasizing that it must be sufficiently robust legally to avoid exposing companies to penalties or arbitration, EU diplomats told Reuters.

It is OutfinityGift project better then all NFTs?
Creating NFTs requires minting and burning the token, which means there’s an upfront cost. Apparently, the OutfinityGift project is changing this concept — the value of their token comes from the fact that, when an NFT is created, the token is locked instead of burned. If the NFT doesn’t sell, the funds can be withdrawn. They use a concept called Points as their token.

TL:DR
They don’t want to be forced to open features for the concurrency.
My problem with the whole situation.
The EU gets some nice features that some portion of users benefit from (AltStores , Sideloading) , but in exchange , we use other features that are far more useful. Like here , screen mirroring. There was a rumor that also AirDrop could loose/lack some functionality in the future (in EU).
It is getting ridiculous. I know that the argument „if you want an open phone , buy an android, why did you buy iPhone if you don’t want ecosystem“ is not valid as there are situations where you can’t choose (family buying only iPhone, Job only provides iPhone). But I fear that my experience and reason why I bought into the Apple ecosystem will be harmed by this over regulation.
I wanted it locked down and secure, I don’t want Google and Microsoft devices to be able to interact with my systems… the whole reason I ditched Windows and Android. Am I alone with that, anyone else who thinks so?

Instead of being angry at the legislature forcing corporations to have some modicum of decency, you should be angry at corporations that don’t provide that by default and they act petty about it by degrading service.
Apple has dozens of billions of dollars ready to go implement anything at any given time, if they wanted to allow their services to work well in the EU with the new regulations they could (might take some time). But they won’t. Be angry at apple, not the DMA.

Antropologisia elokuvia yöttömään yöhön
Liikkuva kuva antaa meille hetkeksi luvan paeta arkitodellisuutta.
Elokuva on laajalle yleisölle helpoimmin lähestyttävä media antropologian tieteenalan ymmärtämiseen, mikä on osaltaan vaikuttanut dokumentaarisen, etnografisen elokuvan suosioon. Vieraiden kulttuurien tapojen näyttäminen tekee niistä todentuntuisempia pelkän kirjallisen kuvailun sijaan.
Samasta syystä etnografisen elokuvan luomaa visuaalista perinnettä on sovellettu useissa fiktiivisissä elokuvissa, joiden representaation totuudenmukaisuutta antropologit ovat vuorostaan hanakoita arvioimaan.
Elokuvantekijät tuntuvat myös mieltyneen antropologin henkilöhahmoon. Tutkija Jeremy MacClancyn tekemän selvityksen mukaan antropologit ovat eri tieteenalojen edustajista useimmin popularisoituja fiktiossa, jossa he tyypillisesti ottavat joko sankarin, ressukan tai pahiksen roolin.
MacClancyn mukaan suosion syy piilee siinä, että antropologi on oiva hahmo pohjustamaan juonikehityksessä maantieteellisiä siirtymiä, minkä lisäksi hän mahdollistaa esimerkiksi kulttuurieroihin tai tutkimusetiikkaan liittyvien kysymysten käsittelyn osana tarinaa.
Selvityksestä inspiroituneena olemme koonneet lukijoillemme kymmenen antropologiasta eri tavoin inspiroituneen elokuvan listan. Monet yllä mainitut näkökulmat tulevat valinnoissa tavalla tai toisella esiin.
Elokuvasuositusten myötä AntroBlogin toimitus jää kesätauolle, ja palaamme uusin aihein jälleen syyskuussa. Toivotamme lukijoillemme viihtyisää kesää liikkuvan kuvan äärellä!
1. Loputon yö (Midsommar) – Ari Aster 2019, kauhu
Perhetragediasta toipuva yhdysvaltalainen psykologian opiskelija Dani lähtee antropologipoikaystävänsä ja tämän opiskelukavereiden kanssa juhlimaan juhannusta kuvitteelliseen Hårgan ihanneyhteisöön Ruotsiin saadakseen muuta ajateltavaa. Alkuun hårgalaiset muistuttavat hippiliikkeestä ja kansanuskosta lainaavaa vaihtoehtoyhteisöä, jonka kulttuuriperinteitä antropologit ovat tulleet tutkimaan keskelle kauneinta kesää. Ihanneyhteisön kulissi alkaa kuitenkin pian rakoilla, kun yhteisöstä paljastuu kulttimaisia piirteitä. Samalla antropologien tutkimusetiikka asettuu kyseenalaiseksi. Lopulta Danin ja antropologien täytyy tahoillaan punnita, kuinka pitkälle heidän ymmärryksensä vieraita kulttuureja kohtaan kantaa.

2. Jurassic Park – Steven Spielberg 1993, scifi
Biologisesta antropologiasta väitelleen Michael Crichtonin romaaniin perustuvassa tieteisseikkailussa joukko asiantuntijoita kutsutaan arvioimaan Costa Ricaan rakentuvan teemapuiston turvallisuutta. Jurassic Park on hyvä esimerkki siitä, miten fiktiivinen teos muokkaa elettyä todellisuutta: elokuva popularisoi ajatusta sukupuuttoon kuolleiden eliöiden henkiin herättämisestä, mitä on esitetty yhdenlaisena – joskin kiistanalaisena – vastauksena nykyiseen lajikatoon. Show’n varastava kaaosteoreetikko Ian Malcolm puolestaan esitteli maailmalle akateemisen rocktähden arkkityypin hyvän aikaa ennen kuin henkilöbrändäys hiipi yliopistomaailmaan.

3. The Woman King – Gina Prince-Bythewood 2022, toiminta
Länsiafrikkalaiseen Dahomeyn kuningaskuntaan 1820-luvulle sijoittuvan elokuvan päähenkilö on omatahtoinen Nawi, jonka ottoisä lähettää kuningas Ghezon agoji-naissotureista eli minoista koostuvan rykmentin oppiin. Dahomey toimi orjakaupan keskuksena 1860-luvulle saakka.

4. Kadonnut maailma (The Lost World) – Harry O. Hoyt 1925, seikkailu
Arthur Conan Doylen romaaniin perustuva mykkäfilmi on klassinen kolonialistinen seikkailuelokuva, jossa rymistellään kaukomailla tieteen nimissä. Satavuotiaan elokuvan huolellisesti valmistellut erikoistehosteet jaksavat edelleen hätkähdyttää. Vuonna 1996 fiktiivisen professori Challengerin työtä kunnioitettiin antamalla uudelle Brasiliasta löydetylle dinosaurukselle nimeksiIrritator challengeri. Kyseessä on ainoa antropologin mukaan nimetty hirmuliskolaji.

5. Je’vida – Katja Gauriloff 2023, draama
Kolmessa aikatasossa kulkeva, ensimmäinen koltansaameksi tehty pitkä elokuva, Je’vida, kertoo samannimisen tytön kasvutarinan. Elokuvassa Je’vida lähetetään lapsena kotitilaltaan asuntolakouluun, jossa hänet pakkosuomalaistetaan. Aikuiseksi vartuttuaan hän jättää saamelaisidentiteetin ja äidinkielen taakseen, kunnes siskon kuolema pakottaa Je’vidan palaamaan kotitilalleen ja kohtaamaan pakkosuomalaistamisen aiheuttaman ylisukupolvisen trauman. Mustavalkoisen teoksen visuaalinen ilme viittaa etnografisiin valokuviin, joita käytettiin saamelaisten eksotisointiin vuosikymmenten ajan. Elokuvalla kolttasaamelainen ohjaaja Gauriloff on halunnut palauttaa valokuvista tutun estetiikan takaisin kansalleen.

6. Embrace of the Serpent (El abrazo de la serpiente) – Ciro Guerra 2015, seikkailu
Embrace of the Serpent tarjoaa vaihtoehtoisen näkökulman tutulle viidakkoseikkailun asetelmalle.

7. Parasite (Gisaengchung, 기생충) – Bong Joon Ho 2019, satiiri

8. Taistelu tulesta (Quest for Fire) – Jean-Jacques Annaud 1981, fantasia
Todentuntuisuudestaan huolimatta Taistelua tulesta on kritisoitu runsaista asiavirheistään.

9. Call me by your name – Luca Guadagnino 2017, rakkaus

10. Jumalan kaupunki (Cidade de Deus) – Fernando Meirelles ja Kátia Lund 2002, rikos
Raketti elää nuoruuttaan 70-luvulla Jumalan kaupungiksi nimetyssä Rio de Janeiron favelassa Brasiliassa. Elämä on näköalatonta, väkivalta arkipäivää ja ihmishenki halpa. Raketti haaveilee poispääsystä, sillä ainoa tapa menestyä favelassa on tehtailla ryöstöjä, myydä huumeita ja tappaa muita, eikä hänestä ole siihen. Pikku-Zé on tehnyt päinvastaisen valinnan ja nousee Jumalan kaupunkia hallitsevan jengin johtoon.

America’s drone 9/11 is coming — and just like on 9/11, we aren’t ready
This month, Ukraine pulled off its own Pearl Harbor, decimating more than 40 of Russia’s strategic bombers worth more than $7 billion. This despite lacking an air force. The attack was a masterclass in asymmetric warfare. It involved 117 explosive drones, hidden inside wooden sheds, quietly trucked to remote Russian bases from Siberia and the Arctic, then unleashed in coordinated waves.
Flash back to early December 2024, when strange lights hovered over New Jersey skies. Residents flooded 911 and social media with reports. But what followed was worse: government paralysis.
No one — not the Federal Aviation Administration, not the FBI, not Gov. Phil Murphy (D) — could say what the drones were, how many there were or where they came from. Instead, they gaslit the public, blaming the sightings on helicopters and meteors.
We have seen this movie before, most recently in the early days of the COVID-19 crisis, when government obfuscation and lack of coordination between local, state and federal agencies generated confusion, outrage and chaos. After the New Jersey drone debacle, we should all be sounding alarm bells about our unpreparedness in the face of this new threat.
Complacency comes in a variety of forms — misplaced hope, denial, fatalism — but the results are always the same. It leaves you flat-footed in the face of imminent threats. It prevents you from doing what needs to be done to avoid a worst-case outcome.
The antidote to complacency is vigilance, that is, having a plan for what we will do if suicide drone attacks start.
Such a plan would start by breaking down the walls between silos such as the Department of Homeland Security, Department of Defense, FAA, FBI and others within the federal government itself. It would hard-wire the broken connections with law enforcement at the state and local level. It would establish accountability: Who is going to keep watch around the clock, assess the threat in real time and notify everyone with a need to know?
The agency with the mandate to build this kind of nationwide, coordinated response is FEMA. That’s what makes the president’s proposal to dismantle it not just misguided, but dangerous. Now more than ever, we need a powerful, professional FEMA to unify efforts across government and industry to confront the asymmetric threats of this new era.
It is the responsibility of the federal government to envision and prepare for this worst-case scenario. Innovative solutions are needed, whether to create an impenetrable dome, new jamming technology or high-tech weaponry to shoot drones out of the sky. Only businesses and certain parts of the military have this kind of know-how, and only FEMA can build the public-private ventures we will need to get it done.

in reply to Jure Repinc • • •While I love the idea, I just don't see this moving forward unless any of these projects can focus on splitting up these types of projects into a solid base, driver layer, and then UI layer. Instead they are all spending a ton of engineering resources building something from scratch.
So many projects have similarly started the same way and failed instead of working towards a base that replaces AOSP first, then spinning their own UI on top. The big device manufacturers figured out a decade ago this is the right way to go, and these small projects buck that and fail instead of just focusing on the thing they ultimately intend to focus on.
Get a good base that is removed from Google, THEN do this project.

in reply to Aatube • • •Sort of. Whatever hardware these are intended to run on require something like 3X the driver code (at least in the case of the Android Linux kernel, according to Greg Kroah-Hartman). Phones tend to have more specialized and proprietary hardware, so you can't just take the standard Linux kernel, use it there, and call it a day.
But I'd be surprised if the people working on this weren't aware of that fact, and I hope they are working on abstracting the hardware layers more so that every mobile Linux project doesn't have to start from scratch every time.
Edit: source (YouTube, sorry) for the claim about how much driver code is required for mobile devices.

in reply to trevor (he/they) • • •Eh, you sort of can on some phones, e.g. OnePlus 5 and 6; on some others it's just a couple dozen patches away from working.
The problem with other phones isn't "abstracting the hardware" (this is done by the Linux kernel), it's reverse-engineering the drivers so that they run on whatever kernel you want and use the open standards required by the "desktop linux" userspace. In fact, if you look at the "supported devices" list for all those mobile Linux distros you'll find a fairly similar set; that's simply all devices for which manufacturer's (or reverse-engineered) drivers are available. It's not like FOSS people are writing drivers specifically for their distro, which wouldn't work with any other - only corporate Android vendors do that!
trevor (he/they)
in reply to balsoft • • •I highly doubt that those "couple dozen" patches are trivial though. Even Pixel devices can't run the vanilla mainline kernel without a bunch of added code to make it work with the hardware (see: the Greg KH interview I linked).
And abstracting the hardware is what you do when you make drivers, so this is a distinction without a difference.
balsoft
in reply to trevor (he/they) • • •Yes, what I'm saying is that Mobile Linux people are typically doing just that, sometimes also trying to upstream it as well. I don't see how else they could be "working on abstracting the hardware".

in reply to Aatube • • •The base for Android is also Linux. But there is another layer. That is AOSP, which is comparable to your distro, then there's another layer of your UI (ie: MIUI, One UI, Nothing UI, Pixel UI, etc) which is comparable to your DE on Linux.
That second layer is what they're referring to. Currently everyone is just playing with the third layer (the DE), to my knowledge.
balsoft
in reply to Ulrich • • •AOSP is more than your distro, it's like the combination of all the gubbins that make your desktop computer work - rendering layer, compositor, unified device interfaces (like bluetooth or the battery), network management, audio, etc; whereas a typical Linux distro is simply a combination of all these already existing things.

Linux
Plasma mobile
The split is already there, the problem is that most Android phone manufacturers never publish the drivers (let alone make them open-source) and the only way to get anything but stock image running is to just rip parts out of the stock image, which significantly limits what you can put below it (i.e. Linux version) and on top of it (i.e Android Java gubbins). And you can't "just replace AOSP", as it's a huge complicated thing (kind of by design) which allows vendors to tightly couple the drivers to the system image. The idea of all these "mobile Linux-es" is to get rid of AOSP entirely, replacing it with "desktop Linux userspace" (systemd, musl, D-BUS, NetworkManager, pipewire, upower, mpris, libnotify, Qt/GTK, Plasma/Gnome, etc etc etc). A DE is an integral part of this; you can't build and run Nova launcher just with Wayland and Pipewire but without Dalvik and Android SDK/NDK, and remaking all of that from scratch would be an insanely hard undertaking.
To put it another way,
This project is required if you want to make a "good base", otherwise that "good base" would just be an empty TTY that you can't interact with because there's no on-screen keyboard; besides, that "base" is already there and has been for 20 years, what's missing is the drivers.

I have also implemented initial support for running NixOS proper on Librem 5, packaged/fixed some stuff 1 2 3 (and more which didn't make it to nixpkgs) to make it semi-daily-usable with Plasma Mobile, and daily-used it for a couple of weeks and then on and off for a couple of months.
I know how mobile Linux works, from the bootloader to the kernel to the userspace to the DE to apps that run on it. I also have a cursory understanding of how Android works, enough to know that it's not feasible to build "a base that replaces AOSP", let alone make it work with vendor-provided driver blobs and proprietary Android apps (which is what you're proposing?). What manufacturers actually do is take AOSP, patch it to fit their needs/work with their shitty drivers, and ship it on the device as a bunch of blobs because it's Apache-licensed.

in reply to balsoft • • •You hacked out a bare running Nix config for a phone...cool. I wouldn't call it an implementation of anything because all you did was hammer out configs, but good for you. Now you have a phone where half the hardware doesn't work, but Nix runs, so super awesome for you. Must be a great user experience.
Even in your comments on your link, you're proving my point. Without a solid BASE, and a DRIVER LAYER, you won't have a successful project to push a UI of anything, because packaging themall together doesn't make sense. All the major phone vendors know this, and have moved in that direction for awhile.
Why you came in here with your links to something that is literally saying the same thing as I am as if you are proving a point to somebody, I have no idea.
balsoft
in reply to just_another_person • • •Yeah, that's my point, all the software is there already, with a little bit of persuasion and glue it runs fairly well together. I'm not claiming I wrote actual drivers or whatever. What I did was figured out how to adapt the existing software to work on NixOS, so you can just take your desktop NixOS config, add a couple lines to it, and run it on the phone.
All hardware on Librem 5 worked with NixOS as I expected. The reason I'm not dailying it anymore is because the hardware kinda sucks, it's outdated and slow. If I could get the same software stack running on more modern hardware I'd gladly use it. Perhaps the battery life could be improved if the power management was better, but that's about my only complaint software-wise.
I'm not sure what you mean by "solid BASE". Do you want to rewrite all of the existing software that implements the "desktop Linux" userspace? Who would be doing this and why, when existing stuff mostly works?
"DRIVER LAYER" in the FOSS world is just Linux. Drivers can live in the Linux tree or as small patches on top of it, with common open interfaces allowing compatibility between software and hardware. Just like they have been doing on the desktop for the past 30 years. The problem is plain: there are no open-source drivers or documentation for most phone hardware. Vendors don't have this issue because they have access to private documentation and the sources of proprietary drivers. Writing FOSS drivers requires reverse-engineering the proprietary drivers, which is very resource-intensive. The proprietary drivers that are there lock you into a particular Linux version (usually a very particular Linux version, and there's no way to solve this with any driver layer, at least without sacrificing performance and resource usage) and sometimes have proprietary interfaces with the userspace as well, which aren't easy to write a compat layer for (if that's what you're proposing). And in any case, if you are fine with proprietary stuff running in EL1, why not just run Android?
All this is completely orthogonal to making a DE on top of open standards, which is the point of open standards. For hardware that works with (mostly) mainline Linux, desktop userspace with plasma-mobile/phosh on top work well enough already. For hardware that doesn't, adding support is a lot of work, not because of any issues with the DE or userspace, but because hardware manufacturers don't publish the driver sources.

Maybe we are way past the curve where more processing power means shorter processing times/more energy savings vs. going full power for every little bit.
In summary, why would you still pay over $400 for a phone nowadays, if all you get is a better camera (which still doesn't make noticeably better photos) and less battery time?
