The pilot of a small plane that crashed near a North Carolina airport this month had raised a wheel after landing to avoid hitting a turtle on the runway, according to a National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) preliminary report.

The pilot of the Universal Stinson 108, a single-engine, four-seat aircraft, and a passenger were killed in the 3 June crash near Sugar Valley airport in Mocksville, officials said. A second passenger was seriously injured in the crash.

A communications operator looking out of the airport office window advised the pilot that there was a turtle on the runway, according to the report released this week. The operator reported that the pilot landed about 1,400ft down the 2,424ft runway, then lifted the right main wheel to avoid the turtle. The operator heard the pilot advance the throttle after raising the wheel, but the airplane left her view after that.

The British government will move to ban the activist group Palestine Action and proscribe it as a terrorist organisation, after two activists broke into the UK's largest airbase on Friday on electric scooters and damaged two Royal Air Force (RAF) planes.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper will submit a statement before parliament on Monday which if passed will make it illegal to be a member of the group, the BBC reported.

Footage shared by Palestine Action purported to show two protesters riding scooters towards the RAF planes on the runway at the Brize Norton airbase, where they used "repurposed fire extinguishers to spray red paint into the turbine engines" and "caused further damage using crowbars". The activists then evaded security and escaped the base.

The group announced on its website on Friday that the airbase was targeted because flights leave daily from there "for RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, a base used for military operations in Gaza and across the Middle East".

BRUSSELS — Israel’s actions in Gaza may have violated the terms of the country’s agreement with the EU, the bloc’s diplomatic corps found.

“On the basis of the assessments made by the independent international institutions … there are indications that Israel would be in breach of its human rights obligations under Article 2 of the EU-Israel Association Agreement,” the European External Action Service (EEAS) concluded, according to a leaked document seen by POLITICO.

Kallas told lawmakers in the European Parliament on Wednesday that “Israel has the right to self-defense, but what we see in practice from Israel goes beyond self-defense,” adding that Israel is “undermining decades of humanitarian principles” by blocking food and medicine for Palestinians in Gaza, along with sidestepping U.N. aid.

The use of voice assistants (VAs) in family homes is growing, likely due to their usefulness in navigating the complexities of family life. Given previously observed tendencies to anthropomorphize VAs, an investigation of the relationship that family members form with these devices is warranted—particularly considering the long-term use of such devices in the private environment of the family home. In a large-scale, longitudinal online study, 128 parents with at least one child and one voice assistant at home were surveyed every 6 months over 2.5 years. To measure relationship development, the dependent variable usage frequency was chosen as a behavior-based indicator of ongoing interaction and the dependent variable connectedness as a perception-based indicator. Parents evaluated their own and their children’s usage frequency, connectedness, and potentially influencing variables (divided into the categories social feelings, utility, and anthropomorphization). Social feelings that fulfill a hedonistic-utilitarian purpose (enjoyment and sadness when gone) were found to positively influence usage frequency. Social feelings that suggest that the VA takes over an intimate social role (of a friend) had no significant influence and were rather low. Parents appear to rather view and appreciate the VA as a useful and enjoyable tool; viewing a VA as a friend appears to be met with resistance. This emphasizes the necessity to distinguish between social feelings that are driven by hedonistic-utilitarian motives and those that imply the satisfaction of social needs.
