Majority of Germans now hold negative view of Israel : Survey

German public opinion has shifted dramatically against Israel, with 57% now holding a negative view of the country following its military actions in Gaza, according to a new survey released Friday.

The poll by Allensbach research institute for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper marks a striking reversal from 2022, when only 23% expressed negative views of Israel.

The survey found growing concerns about Israel's military attacks, with 65% of Germans considering Israel's actions in Gaza “inappropriate.” Only 13% voiced support for the military campaign.

In a particularly notable finding, 73% of respondents indicated they saw “some truth” in the statement that Israel's actions in Gaza constitute “genocide,” while only 9% explicitly rejected this characterization.

France: Tangled in conspiracy theories and violence, Muslims prepare for a new Islamophobic law

In the wake of the tragic and violent Islamophobic murder of Aboubakar Cissé — who was stabbed 57 times in a mosque — Muslims were left to grieve for both his loss and the countless lives lost in Palestine.

The State had the opportunity to halt its relentless Islamophobic agenda. It did the exact opposite. The Minister of the Interior refused to visit the mosque where the murder took place, and on 21 May he divulged a report on the alleged infiltration of French society by the Muslim Brotherhood.

The publication exacerbated an already intense moral panic, depicting Muslims as conspirators on the verge of seizing power. Ten days after the publication, a second racist murder occurred: a man stabbed his Tunisian neighbour, Hicham Miraoui, to death and subsequently published a series of videos on social media in which he declared his racism.

I had been going back and forth between the coast a lot, and I got to be the passenger for one of the trips. With a piece in mind about hurtling through the trees at sixty miles per hour, I had turned the shutter speed to two seconds (too much blur, can’t tell what stuff is) and settled on a single second. Holding the camera as steady as possible in a bouncy car was difficult, but I like the result! There could be a little man dashing through the trees, trying to keep up with the car.

Thanks for seeing my work!

Israel is running out of interceptor missiles. China’s export bans mean they can’t be replaced.

I know this is bad but god I’d love it if this turns into the global south finally getting the justice they deserve by teaming together and obliterating the west
in reply to MynameisAllen

The best outcome here would be the west imploding economically and turning on itself while the global south moves on.

Turns out Simon Whistler is a Nazi apologist after all?

Posted in video format because it's the original source/proof (and of course it is a video, it's Simon Whistler we are talking about, perhaps the current de facto posterboy of YouTube after having replaced Matthew Santoro a while ago). We in the fediverse have been mindfully observant of situations like what's happening in Germany. Does the idea someone thinks they will get to be treated as different in this state of affairs scare anyone else?

Pilot killed in North Carolina plane crash was trying to avoid turtle on runway, report shows

The pilot of a small plane that crashed near a North Carolina airport this month had raised a wheel after landing to avoid hitting a turtle on the runway, according to a National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) preliminary report.

The pilot of the Universal Stinson 108, a single-engine, four-seat aircraft, and a passenger were killed in the 3 June crash near Sugar Valley airport in Mocksville, officials said. A second passenger was seriously injured in the crash.

A communications operator looking out of the airport office window advised the pilot that there was a turtle on the runway, according to the report released this week. The operator reported that the pilot landed about 1,400ft down the 2,424ft runway, then lifted the right main wheel to avoid the turtle. The operator heard the pilot advance the throttle after raising the wheel, but the airplane left her view after that.

Canada poised to pass infrastructure bill despite pushback from Indigenous people

Canada’s Liberal government is poised to pass controversial legislation on Friday that aims to kick-start “nation building” infrastructure projects but has received widespread pushback from Indigenous communities over fears it tramples on their constitutional rights.

On its final day of sitting before breaking for summer, parliament is expected to vote on Bill C-5. The legislation promised by Mark Carney, the prime minister, during the federal election, is meant to strengthen Canada’s economy amid a trade war launched by Donald Trump.

The bill removes interprovincial trade barriers and aims to prioritize infrastructure projects, such as energy pipelines and mines deemed to be in the national interest.

in reply to enkers

Exactly. Just like they promised ten years ago, and then never delivered. Now we're moving in the opposite direction.

Fuck the Liberals. We gave them a win, and the first thing they do is fuck us over. Again.

in reply to Archangel1313

After Trudeau self-sabotaged electoral reform, I decided to never vote for them again until they fulfill that promise. Lying is the norm for the Liberals, so fuck em.

Palestine Action to be proscribed as a terror group after break-in at UK's largest airbase

The British government will move to ban the activist group Palestine Action and proscribe it as a terrorist organisation, after two activists broke into the UK's largest airbase on Friday on electric scooters and damaged two Royal Air Force (RAF) planes.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper will submit a statement before parliament on Monday which if passed will make it illegal to be a member of the group, the BBC reported.

Footage shared by Palestine Action purported to show two protesters riding scooters towards the RAF planes on the runway at the Brize Norton airbase, where they used "repurposed fire extinguishers to spray red paint into the turbine engines" and "caused further damage using crowbars". The activists then evaded security and escaped the base.

The group announced on its website on Friday that the airbase was targeted because flights leave daily from there "for RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, a base used for military operations in Gaza and across the Middle East".

Israel in breach of EU deal over Gaza human rights, report signals

BRUSSELS — Israel’s actions in Gaza may have violated the terms of the country’s agreement with the EU, the bloc’s diplomatic corps found.

“On the basis of the assessments made by the independent international institutions … there are indications that Israel would be in breach of its human rights obligations under Article 2 of the EU-Israel Association Agreement,” the European External Action Service (EEAS) concluded, according to a leaked document seen by POLITICO.

Kallas told lawmakers in the European Parliament on Wednesday that “Israel has the right to self-defense, but what we see in practice from Israel goes beyond self-defense,” adding that Israel is “undermining decades of humanitarian principles” by blocking food and medicine for Palestinians in Gaza, along with sidestepping U.N. aid.

Are Voice Assistants Becoming Family Members?

The use of voice assistants (VAs) in family homes is growing, likely due to their usefulness in navigating the complexities of family life. Given previously observed tendencies to anthropomorphize VAs, an investigation of the relationship that family members form with these devices is warranted—particularly considering the long-term use of such devices in the private environment of the family home. In a large-scale, longitudinal online study, 128 parents with at least one child and one voice assistant at home were surveyed every 6 months over 2.5 years. To measure relationship development, the dependent variable usage frequency was chosen as a behavior-based indicator of ongoing interaction and the dependent variable connectedness as a perception-based indicator. Parents evaluated their own and their children’s usage frequency, connectedness, and potentially influencing variables (divided into the categories social feelings, utility, and anthropomorphization). Social feelings that fulfill a hedonistic-utilitarian purpose (enjoyment and sadness when gone) were found to positively influence usage frequency. Social feelings that suggest that the VA takes over an intimate social role (of a friend) had no significant influence and were rather low. Parents appear to rather view and appreciate the VA as a useful and enjoyable tool; viewing a VA as a friend appears to be met with resistance. This emphasizes the necessity to distinguish between social feelings that are driven by hedonistic-utilitarian motives and those that imply the satisfaction of social needs.
