For Android:
1. Use ADB (or similar tools) to remove Facebook, Meta, Twatter, Instagram, etc., from all your Android devices.
2. Use a tool like RethinkDNS or other firewall to block block block. If using RethinkDNS, apply good blockers too.
3. If using a firewall that uses your VPN slot, setup wireguard to use your VPN host
4. Have different browsers on your device e.g. Brave, IronFox, Cromite. Follow online guides to set up.
5. Use DuckDuckGo, SearXNG or Mullvadleta to search
6. Never access Facebook, Insta, Twitter etc. from your mobile device. In fact, if you have the right firewall / blocking set up, you simply cannot.
6. Do as much online shopping from a laptop / PC with a secure browser. Also, have about 3 different browsers there too.
7. If you MUST use Facebook etc., only do it from a browser on your laptop / PC.

Just my personal strategy. My firewall logs show its quite effective but not fully impervious.

They got hit by a lot of negative reviews and bad publicity those last years. Myself gave it a try last years and while it isn't a bad distro from first impression... The fact that they add bookmarks into my firefox and Manjaro bootscreen at start gave me a strange feeling... Specially because this happend after the bios bootscreen hack. And I know this is not related but it still gave me strange gut feeling and always follow your guts !

Two of my friends switched recently.
They had none to very little experience with anything Linux before, their previous win11 installs just over bloated and the copilot bullshit pushed them over. Both (indie/non-pop shooters) gamers btw.

They tend to make sure stuff that gamers care about are up to date and working.

You'll likely need the newest kernels and software packages if you're running the latest gen of GPU and/or CPU, to get the most out of them, or even get them to work at all.

Some of it, yeah.

All a distro is, really, is a preset. It comes with some package manager or other, along with a collection of pre-installed packages.

The reason one chooses one distro over another, is because it's closer to what you need. I could install arch, and spend a day setting it up exactly the way I like. Or, I could start with Endeavour, and get to essentially the same state in an hour.

I'm familiar enough with linux that I could strong-arm any install into doing whatever I need, but at times, to get from preset A to preset B, it's faster to just start over from a known preset that's closest to what I want.

Rolling releases typically mean the software available is recent, but that's only one aspect of what your starting point could look like.

"Gaming" distros are going to be a preset that contains a bunch of configurations, defaults and software, that gamers typically care about. That steam is usually already installed, is an example of one such thing. The same way my mention of GPU and CPU support is only an example.

Maybe instead of "They tend to make sure stuff that gamers care about are up to date and working" I should have phrased it "They tend to make sure things that gamers care about are easy to set up and supported, if not even ready to go, out of the box".

I wish I could get my friends to switch. I even had one tell me they would rather use it if supported the games that don’t work (which of course are games with anti-cheat issues). But they at least recognize that Windows is getting quite bloated

My first one to switch did so recently. Gave him an open offer to help get going if he ever got interested, then proceeded to just go about using my linux system for our multiplayer gaming and couch gaming hangouts.

It took a little less than three years from when I first switched for him to follow.

My sister is also on linux, has been since she took my gaming laptop as her own, and she never felt a need to switch it back to windows.

That’s actually similar to how I got one of my friends on it. I got a Framework 16 about a year ago and installed Linux on it with a very customized KDE DE and he seemed pretty interested in it whenever I brought it with me whenever we hung out. Offered him a hand in learning more about Linux, how to install, customization, different distributions, Steam Proton, etc. About 7-8 months after and he has a Framework 13 with Fedora Linux.

My other friends are just stuck on the gaming side of things sadly. The games that I dropped when I made the switch I really didn’t care a whole lot about anyways. Not the case with my other friends though.

However, I have my brother and my parents using it for their laptops as they don’t need it for anything else but a web browser and an office suite and over the last year or so there have been no complaints!

It just goes to show you. The only way to get the Linux desktop market share up is not building. Something better than Windows we have been there for a while. It's make hardware, put Linux on that hardware and sell it in a store. Avg people don't change operating systems. They change computers. Now if we could just get steam decks in retail stores. It would be a huge.

This is a huge argument, even Linus Torvalds said that many years ago. The average person just wants to buy a computer and use it normally for work, casual stuff or gaming. They won't make the effort to change the operating system.

There is a non-insignificant amount of people who just throw away their computer when something gets messed up because they don't know how to reinstall windows. Not only do average people not know how to install an operating system, they don't even know how to learn. Many people have help, techie friends and family, but many don't, and they can sadly only be helped at scale.

Ah that makes sense i know Brazil has laws to keep imports low. That's why Brazil kept the saga mega drive active for so long. So having Linux on machines makes sense. Since it's both an import and not an import at the same time.

thats not really the reason brazil does this. our restrictions on imports come because our ruling class makes pretty much nothing and rely on having a cornered retail market they can profit off of. just capitalism things, kind of unique but nothing really new.

back then, the argument was about "venda casada" (no idea how to translate this). its when you buy something and you are forced to buy something else on their terms to make it work. they ruled that manufacturers can't force you to buy a windows license from them when you are already paying for a computer from them.

instead of selling it without an os, many of them offered linux as an option and passed the savings on to the customer, not unlike some manufacturers are doing in the us nowadays. most people got it with the intention of reformatting the machines with pirated windows for free, but many tried it and stuck with linux. we got a lot of adoption for a while there.

Soon Linux will be big enough that stores will offer a selection of operating systems. It might be possible already to ask for a custom built PC deal with a discount for no bringing your own OS or having them install it for you.

Yep i honestly think that's why the steam deck is not available in retell in the US. MICROSOFT probably has a clause in place that would remove any license discounts from the big OEMs if their machines are stocked with Linux machines.

I wanted to switch but then saw nvidia's drivers are even worse on linux than windows. Maybe once I'm ready for a gpu upgrade I'll go AMD and make the switch because it feels like if theres little hope of nvidia fixing their drivers for PC there is zero hope for linux.

I'm using an Nvidia card on Debian with 0 issues myself and the driver installation was really easy. I'm curious what source you read stating that they are worse, by how much, and in what way. Do you have a link I can read? Thanks.

Okay, well to balance that anecdotal information with some more, let me put some of those bad points listed in context with what my experience has been on Debian 12 Stable with an RTX 3090.

Proton is great, and is really impressive, but you still must download several versions to expect running everything you want, and you must do trial and errors to find the most efficient version for you (fortunately, ProtonDB helps a lot)

Somewhat true, but protonDB is so accurate that I think I have only had to trial and error 1 or 2 games ever. Downloading multiple proton versions isn't a big problem as they aren't too large, and I have only ever needed either the latest stable release, or the experimental release. As far as actual game compatibility goes, when I moved to Linux I looked up every game in my steam library in proton DB to see what I was working with. The result was that:

95 of my games ran natively on Linux. 31 of my games were rated platinum. 73 of my games were rated gold. 12 were rated silver. 3 were rated as bronze. 3 were noted as unplayable.

Nvidia drivers greatly improved recently, that's true, but you still have to download the latest beta drivers to run games through gamescope, and they are not on the official pacman repo, so they won't upgrade automatically.

You have to add 1 repository for the drivers and then it upgrades when you upgrade as normal. This is like a 2 step process of editing a text file and then running one command. I have never had to use gamescope.

Now, let's talk about performance. Yeah, I have an Nvidia card. Yeah, I know it's bad for Linux. But that's what I got, and I bought it very recently, so I won't buy an AMD card for Linux now. When you talk with Linux users, they will always say that performance in games is way better than in Windows. Maybe that's true in some games, but I'm afraid that's only the case for AMD users. With an Nvidia card, the best you can get is the same performances as in Windows. And that is when you're lucky. Then, if you want shiny things like HDR, or DLSS frame generation, you MUST use gamescope, and it will have a cost in terms of performances. And you will need trials and errors to get everything you want.

Performance on some games is better through proton and this is true even with my NVIDIA card. This is largely because where you lose performance on emulation, typically you are making up for it in leaps and bounds because Linux is not running 1000 telemetry processes and stuff in the background like Windows does. I have only played one game where the performance was noticeably worse. I don't use gamescope at all. As far as I'm aware DLSS/HDR work fine (running armored core VI on ultra graphics for example looks and runs great and the settings seem to be enabled). As I said before, I only ever had to trial and error 1 or 2 games.

That said, don't expect other shiny things like RTX HDR in desktop, frame gen out of games that natively support it, DLDSR, and many other things like that, to work in Linux. In fact, everything that is available through the Nvidia App or the Nvidia Control Panel won't be available in Linux. You must be aware of that, because that's very cool features you'll likely never (or in a very distant future maybe) see on Linux. You won't be able to use Lossless Scaling neither, and there is no equivalent in Linux - even in gamescope, at least for now (but maybe that'll come, I don't despair of seeing this happen in the future).

Parts of this statement are just straight up not true. When installing the drivers, you also install the NVIDIA Settings application which does not contain all settings from the NVIDIA control panel, but a subset of them. RTX HDR in the desktop for example does work, but it is just dependent on the window manager. Here is another reddit thread stating as much. I assume the OP of the thread you linked doesn't really know what they are doing. If you want a windows-like experience you probably would be using plasma. Also I'm pretty sure lossless scaling has been a feature in protonGE since 2021, so if you really needed it for a game, you would just install that proton version and use its FSR feature there. I mean, this is stuff that comes back top link when I google for "Lossless scaling linux NVIDIA". The OP really doesn't seem too dedicated to looking up their problems.

Hardware compatibility too, while very good, and even more so with Arch based distros of what I heard, is still a work in progress. For example, I didn't found out how to make Dual Sense haptics work in The Last of Us Part II Remastered. Everything works, even adaptative triggers, but haptics won't work. I know it has to do with the impossibility for the game to find the gamepad's sound device, and there is many workarounds. I tried ALL of it, but still, it doesn't work. That took me several hours to try it, and that's what finally made me give up on Linux for gaming for now.

My PS5 controller including its haptics work natively on debian. I didn't even have to install any drivers or software for it to work. I just plugged in and started playing. I think it just has to be wired for haptics, or whatever you are using for wireless needs to be capable of supporting the controller and its haptics.

So pretty much all of these issues seem to be related to the OP not really investigating their issues well, or not understanding where to go to change settings, or not understanding how their package manager works.

Thanks for the write up. I'll give it a shot and see what its like. Another point of concern was the amount of tweaking I'd have to do. I'm used to quite a few games in Windows not working well out of the gate but it kind of drives me nuts. So I wouldn't want more of that in Linux. My steam library looks like this:

I have a massive library of various games, and three years in I haven't really come across any cases where I want to tear my hair out.

If ProtonDB says a game doesn't work, you're not gonna tweak your way to having it run. If it says it does, and it didn't run right away with no problems, you can usually just apply the fixes other users have found, and be off playing your game.

In fact things are often simpler than on windows, because all the fixes have been gathered on protondb. While on windows you have to google-fu your way to finding someone on reddit or the steam forums who has the exact same problem, and also figured out and posted the fix.

I've been using Linux with Nvidia for 10 years and it's been a constant dumpster fire. The Nvidia driver constantly caused issues over these 10 years, especially during updates. Currently I'm having the issue that the entirety of Wayland, including all open programs, crash when I run out of VRAM because the Linux Nvidia drivers cannot fall back on RAM when running out of VRAM. It's making my gaming experience very frustrating.

I'm on Fedora - Nvidia drivers used to be an issue for me some years back, but since then it's all automatic, I haven't even thought about drivers since buying my 3060.

Using nvidia on endeavouros here with no problems. The drivers rebuild with every kernel update and it's as smooth as gravy. Before external sync was merged, they were problematic on wayland but fine on xorg.

I used EndevourOS with Nvidia for years but one day an update brought a black screen and decided to use something else (downgrade didn't fix it). I'm currently using Tumbleweed and it works well, but I kinda miss Arch... So I installed CachyOS in my Steam Deck.

Wish I could explain you in detail how that's not correct but I'm actually going to play Clair Obscur on my 2080ti on Debian, sorry!

PS: been playing for years with NVIDIA drivers, including VR games, and sure it's not 100% perfect but neither Windows drivers are. It sure is enough for me to keep on playing (and working) without major issue though. Anyway, gotta play!

It's a shame more developers don't target Linux! Anyway I have been Steam gaming on Linux for about 10 years now and it's amazing how good games targeted at Windows run through Proton. I have many games that are targeted for Windows and run BETTER on Fedora.

Everything that is highly CPU bound (I am looking at you, Path of Exile 1) or requires a lot of Disk access (I have no such friends) have a good chance to run better on Linux than on Windows.

As far as I can gather, Valve explicitly advises developers to avoid targeting Linux when building or optimizing for the Steam Deck, instead focusing on optimizing around Proton.

I installed it on a partition along side windows 10.

I installed openrazer to control my keyboard and the next time I loaded it up only the number keys worked.

I'm not sure what my next steps will be but I'm enjoying it other than this issue, it reminds me of the good old DOS days back when I was a kid.

I had to say goodbye to my closest companion today.

Riley entered my life in 2008. I still remember that day. I found her on Craigslist, paid a $60 "rehoming fee", and she sat on my lap as I drove home with my new puppy. I was young and broke, living alone, and could barely afford my bills. It was an irresponsible decision to get a dog at that point in life, but I'm so glad that I was able to make it work.

She was a mix of two retrievers: Her mother was a chocolate lab and her father was a golden retriever. Somehow all of their puppies were black.

I had some experience with dogs before her, but I did not know about the amount of affection that retrievers are capable of. As I was getting to know her, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that she loved hugs so much, she even initiated them! Literally the sweetest dog I've ever met.

She was very smart. I was able to teach her most of her tricks in like ~10 mins each, while heating up frozen pizzas or whatever cheap garbage I ate back then.

She was the most consistent part of my bumpy path in life. She has been with me through tough breakups, my parents' deaths, career changes, and many other ups and downs that come with adulthood.

She's also the oldest retriever I've ever met. She would have been 17 years old next week.

We were together until her last breath. With my hand on her chest, I felt her final heartbeat.

And I will remember her until mine.

Riley was such a good girl.

Sandy got a bath today! I do not expect her to be this white and clean the next time I see her lol

She got crazy zoomies after her bath, rolled in the dirt, and ran around the round pen for a few minutes before she wore herself out. She had a great time and lots of people really liked seeing her enjoying herself like that lol. This pic was taken a few hours later after she dried completely and I did her braids and brushed her.

She got really spicy when I tried to clean one of her back hooves and almost kicked me in the head. I gave her a lil smack on the butt (not hard at all) and yelled at her and she stopped misbehaving and let me clean her hoof. I think she might have a little bit of arthritis in that leg and that's what had her so uncomfortable until I was able to get her foot held and supported properly. If she continues to show that discomfort, I'll get some horse arthritis gel to try out.

GrapheneOS vs LineageOS vs iodéOS

According to Comparison of Android-based Operating Systems, GrapheneOS seems to be better than LineageOS and iodéOS in every aspect.

I'm wondering if there is any downside of GrapheneOS. What am I giving up for using GrapheneOS instead of LineageOS and iodéOS (besides GrapheneOS only support pixel)?

In terms of privacy, security, customizability and functionality, which OS would you recommend and on what device would you recommend using it?

The only real downsides of GOS are that it only supports Pixels, and that it doesn't support microG (I can see the appeal of Sandboxed Play Services, but I would personally have preferred microG).

Customisability: LineageOS
Functionality: (Subjective)

I would only recommend three groups of devices:

Pixels
Fairphones

If you have apps that require play services you can install them to another profile in GOS. Profiles stay active if you like and you can get notifications from other profiles as well. That way you can limit data exposure for play services and apps using them. I do this on my GOS and it works very nice. Though you should use Aurora store to get play store apps (you can get it from f-droid). Many apps from play store work well with out play services.

MicroG is somewhat hacky solution that emulates play services. When you have proper play services you do have all the functionality available. Since it's sandboxed play services don't have any privileged access to the system thus can only access data which is available to any normal app.

In terms of customizability, what limitations does GrapheneOS have aside from not supporting microG? Also, is it possible to install tools like Magisk on GrapheneOS? I’m not entirely sure what Magisk is, but it is always helpful to have more option.

Fairphones and TeraCubes are ethical hardware. Fairtrade, repairable, and possibly open-source (I'll have to double-check that).

GrapheneOS is customisable, yes, but LineageOS is moreso.

Magisk is a tool used to root Android devices (essentially adding an su binary to give the user root access). However, this makes the system inherently less secure, and undermines the whole point of GrapheneOS.

The only apps that don’t work on GrapheneOS are apps that use the strong play integrity API. These don’t work on LineageOS either, only stock OS.

Google turning Pixels more and more complicated to have alternative OS isn't a good sign. I hope GrapheneOS come up with a open source and secure phone alternative. Fairphone or TeraCubes using alternative OSes aren't private or secure enough. I hate to say that but if I would be in the market today for a phone I'd be considering an IPhone.

I'll probably switch to LineageOS and harden it myself if GOS starts floundering, but that would be purely to get my money's worth out of the hardware.

After that, I'd go for my alternative setup of dumb-ish phone + laptop + refurbished iPod.

Ive only started looking into these. GrapheneOS looks cool, but being stuck with only the Pixel is kinda annoying and google is being shitty about supporting it. Removing drivers and squashing git commits, making it harder to support.

I need to look at the others to see how they fair.

There really isn't much comparison.

Graphene only supports Pixels because it is the best phone for hardware security. If you choose to use a different phone you have already accepted a less secure device.

Sandboxed Google Play is going to offer the most compatibility as it allows you to access the main app store in the Android eco system without giving up privileged access to your phone. Devices that use Micro G or regular play store can't make that claim. Which is a massive privacy issue.

Since Graphene OS works with other launchers there really is not a difference in customizability.

I'd love to be able to say there is a good competitor for GOS but none of the other custom ROMs actually focus on Privacy/Security and most are dishonest about that fact. Divest OS was one of the few other ROMs that was honest about what it was so it was sad when the dev moved on.

I'd also note that threat model matters. Not everyone needs top notch security or privacy. There are good reasons to not use GOS, but better privacy/security isn't one. The obvious one is opportunity, whether it's regional or financial, Pixels can be a pain to get.

LineageOS doesn't have anything like sandboxed Google Play. That is a flagship feature of GOS.

It is highly unlikely there is a backdoor in the Pixel. It's just not worth the risk for Google. Not only are the phones highly scrutinized by experts but Google has a million other legal ways to get info off your phone for 99% of users who use the stock OS.

Not at all. Sandboxed google play is...sandboxed. Micro G has privelged access to your phone. That is a massive canyon in the difference of access you are giving an app.

Its the primary privacy reason why standard Google Play is such a privacy nightmare.

The only difference with Micro G is your shifting trust from Google to Micro G. Which is fine if that's what your threat model allows but it doesn't erase the issue.

The reason why Google Play Services is such a privacy nightmare is that it's malicious, and it's privileged.

The recent revelation of how Yandex/Facebook were tracking us through anonymous sessions shows just how much damage can be done with unprivileged apps.

Unlike Play Services, MicroG will do only what it has to (or nothing, if you decide to forgo using all google services). While doing so, it will still minimize the data sent, and spoof what it can to reduce fingerprinting.

As far as I can tell, MicroG seems to be reasonably well trusted. All objections I could find to MicroG are either based on principle, like yours, or on FUD. I have yet to find any mention of actual issues with MicroG.

Yes, it's privileged, and if you reduce the issue of running privileged code an issue of trust, either microG is about as trustworthy as your android ROM (which runs a lot of privileged code on your device). You ROM, minus a few patches, come 99% from Google after all, but you place a lot of trust in the GOS team to sanitize and patch that up. It's OK, I don't disagree.

So once we establish that MicroG is not malicious, running it privileged may be less than optimal, but it's only an issue in terms of attack surface.

Which is not nothing.

With all this being said, I expect that the threat model that regard as an obvious advantage running know malicious code, though unprivileged, over non-malicious privileged code, are going to be few and far between.

As I said before, if your threat model allows you to decide your fine with Micro G having that access, good for you. That isn't a remedy for the actual issue. Its just deciding to ignore it. Trust is much easier to break and abuse then a sandbox.

It seems we differ on the value of trust in this situation. To me, no app is ever trust worthy enough for that type of access. Especially for something like play store access where there are other non privileged ways (aurora store, third party apk mirrors, etc) to access the apps from the play store if you really feel Google is malicious.

There about a gazillion background services in your phone right now having privileged access. Have you taken a look at those? Do you know what they do?

MicroG does not give you access to the play store. Like, not at all. If you think Aurora store is a replacement for microG or Google Play Services you have no idea what you're talking about.

Your playing semantics. Both sandboxed google play and micro g are ways to get around Google Play services but only GOS implementation actually solves the main privacy issue.

The reason I mentioned aurora is because a lot of user install micro g so they can use the play store as it requires play services or a substitution. This was obvious in context.

GrapheneOS is better in principle, but it requires that you (directly or indirectly) give money to Google and depend on Google-controlled hardware, both of which are dealbreakers for some people.

GrapheneOS also depends on hardware support files from Google, which are no longer readily available, making its future unclear.

LineageOS supports a greater variety of devices. The privacy/hardening features aren't as strong as GrapheneOS, but many people find it good enough when:

Google Play Services are not installed
Commercial apps are not installed (open-source apps from F-Droid are the usual alternative)
There is little risk of an adversary gaining physical access to the phone

I still have a few questions:
- Does LineageOS supports muti profile like GrapheneOS (I thought all AOSP supports multiprofile feature)
- Can LineageOS supports Sandboxed Google Play with some tweaks?
- Does LineageOS supports full device encryption using some open source app? (like veracrypt on windows)
- If there is backdoor planted in pixel (which in my opinion is very likely), then I guess the “risk of an adversary gaining physical access to the phone” is quite equal for both of OS?

I don't know, but according to this page, it seems there is some kind of profile support. I assume it's part of the Android Open Source Project.
(Good thing I noticed that you edited your comment to insert this question.) I am not aware of an effective Google Play sandbox from any OS other than GrapheneOS. It doesn't affect me either way, since I don't use Google services.
Storage encryption is built in to Android these days. I don't remember whether the latest version does it with file-based encryption or full-device encryption. (Both have been used in the past.)
It depends on who your adversary is. For example, a Google employee or a government might have remote access to a back door planted in a Pixel, but not to your boot loader. On the other hand, a TSA employee might be able to pwn your phone if granted physical access, but unable to do anything remotely. Pixels are generally more resistant to to physical access attacks because they allow user-supplied keys and boot loader re-locking, but there are companies that sell tools aiming to bypass even these protections, so I wouldn't bet my life on them.

A significant security drawback with many alternative Android operating systems is that they either require or are commonly used with root access, which inherently weakens the device's security model. GrapheneOS, by contrast, is designed to be used without root access. Traditional root implementations fundamentally compromise Android's security mechanisms like verified boot, app sandboxing, and the principle of least privilege, making the device much more vulnerable to exploitation.

BBC pulls Gaza medics documentary due to impartiality concerns - BBC News

The [documentary] production company's founder, Ben de Pear, said earlier this week the BBC had "utterly failed" and that journalists were "being stymied and silenced".
BBC News understands the decision to shelve the documentary was taken on Thursday, following public comments by De Pear at the Sheffield Documentary Festival, and another of the film's directors, journalist Ramita Navai, who appeared on Radio 4's Today discussing the war in Gaza.
Navai told the programme Israel had "become a rogue state that's committing war crimes and ethnic cleansing and mass murdering Palestinians". Israel has denied accusations of war crimes and genocide in Gaza.

TLDR: BBC refuses to run documentary about doctors in Gaza they comissioned because someone involved it is says Israel is committing ethnic cleansing. I think this is one of the most obvious examples on how biased the BBC is towards this situation.
