Asking About Tuxedo Computers

First of all, I'm not sure this is the best community for this, so if you think there is a more suitable one, please inform me.

So I've been looking for manufacturers that sell computers with Linux out of the box and I remembered hearing about Tuxedo Computers. Some people seem to really like them, but I've also heard of some people complaining about them too.

And so I've come here to ask this community what are your experiences with this vendor? Is there somewhere else I should look? Thanks in advance.

in reply to prototype_g2

We have a few Tuxedo computers and some other Linux brands at our company and are generally happy about them. Cheaper devices have a less than perfect keyboard (though I liked the one on the slimbook) a worse camera and microphone (though some are very ok).

I'm very happy with these Linux devices. The few makes for which we needed parts also supplied them but sending the device their way for repair took longer than we'd have wanted.

in reply to prototype_g2

I loved my Pulse 15 (Gen 1) from Tuxedo

It was a performance monster and still had amazing battery life.
But as others have said, they only take some finished Clevo models - like most small distributors, who can't afford their own factory.

But they verify that everything runs with Linux, else they sometimes patch stuff.

And I need to highlight their support!
After years with my Pulse 15 the battery became a pillow, because I used a USB C charger that wasn't working right (always switched on and off, which killed the battery)
Pretty much without questions asked I got a new battery for free.

Now I have it to my nephew, who enjoys Minecraft on this laptop (still Linux), but the CMOS battery was dead.
Got that one for free as well after warranty

So, I can't really complain about them.
Actually the opposite.

But I still settled for a Framework 16, because I wanted something different and the models at that time weren't fitting my use case...

They are gonna hand the election to the GOP because they refuse to fucking retire and let a new generation make decisions.

The DNC is just as culpable for both Trump terms as the GOP voters imo.

The DNC already handed the election to Trump. And now that a leftist gets any momentum the DNC are still doing everyhing in their power to prevent leftists from winning.

China's aging and demographics: once again, everyone is wrong

in reply to ☆ Yσɠƚԋσʂ ☆

Interesting. There is at least one assumption I question: why is economic growth considered to be a good thing? It's a quibble I have with economics as a whole, though, not his demographic analysis specifically. Given most analysts use growth as a positive measure, it's an enlightening analysis.
in reply to grey_maniac

I can highly recommend this book for a broad analysis redletterspp.com/products/chin…

The TLDR of it is that economic growth is positively correlated with the increase in the standard of living. A country like China started out with a very low standard of living after the revolution, and the primary goal of the party has been to raise people out of poverty. This necessarily correlates with the rise in consumption.

I agree that you can reach a point where further economic growth may not produce meaningful improvements in the standard of living, but majority of the world is far from that point right now.

Why China's ultimatum to Myanmar rebels threatens global supply of heavy rare earths

July 8 (Reuters) - The global supply of heavy rare earths hinges in part on the outcome of a months-long battle between a rebel army and the Chinese-backed military junta in the hills of northern Myanmar.

The Kachin Independence Army since December has been battling the junta over the town of Bhamo, less than 100 km (62 miles) from the Chinese border, as part of the civil war that erupted after the military's 2021 coup.

Nearly half the world's supply of heavy rare earths is extracted from mines in Kachin state, including those north of Bhamo, a strategically-vital garrison town. They are then shipped to China for processing into magnets that power electronic vehicles and wind turbines.

China, which has a near-monopoly over the processing of heavy rare earths, has threatened to halt buying the minerals mined in KIA-controlled territory unless the militia stops trying to seize full control of Bhamo, according to three people familiar with the matter.

One of the people, a KIA official, said the Chinese demand was made in May, without detailing where the discussions took place. Another person, a KIA commander, said Beijing was represented by foreign ministry officials at the talks.

Record escape attempt: 19-year-old Lviv resident tried to illegally cross the border 13 times

Don't forget to thank our Lord and Saviour Mr. Zelensky (and the brave heroes protecting Ukraine's borders!) that this criminal was caught!

Just imagine what would happen if he actually managed to escape, and god-forbid lived a happy life instead of being kidnapped in a few years (or earlier..) off the streets and sent into meat grinder to die? That would be terrible!

God bless western democracy.

And some people are really surprised how can people say that Russia is liberating Ukraine... Yeah, those must be tankies. Obviously freedom is slavery.

US only has 25% of all Patriot missile interceptors needed for Pentagon’s military plans

The United States only has about 25% of the Patriot missile interceptors it needs for all of the Pentagon’s military plans after burning through stockpiles in the Middle East in recent months, an alarming depletion that led to the Trump administration freezing the latest transfer of munitions to Ukraine.

The stockpile of the Patriot missiles has fallen so low that it raised concern inside the Pentagon that it could jeopardize potential US military operations, and deputy defense secretary, Stephen Feinberg, authorized the transfer to be halted while they reviewed where weapons were being sent.

Donald Trump appeared to reverse at least part of that decision on Monday when he told reporters in advance of a dinner at the White House with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu that he would “send some more weapons” to Ukraine, although he did not disclose whether that would include Patriot systems.

in reply to Lime Buzz (fae/she)

Interesting article, and I feel that it's pretty fair. At first, I thought they were talking about this checklist, but I see they're different. The version I followed doesn't seem to have the same issues (lists jurisdiction but doesn't give it a rating, doesn't list or rate encryption methods at all, no summary at the beginning, etc.).

I think checklists/matrices still have their place, as listing all the branches/options might get too cluttered for a diagram, but I do understand why flowcharts (or the neat venn diagrams that get posted here often) can express information better. I don't think checklists are inherently biased, I just think you need a good decision maker behind the list.

in reply to Lime Buzz (fae/she)

I think the article was an interesting read. From a laymen's perspective it felt like it got to side tracked by the examples mentioned in the intro (the initial list example and signal vs mls).

When I initially started reading I had thought there would be more information for how someone that is new to a subject could spot and differentiate these lists from the ones the author says the article isn't about without being an expert.

Instead it feels like the title of the article ends up being more of a sub header and the sub header "How Do You Compare Signal to MLS?" was actually a more appropriate title.

Gosuki: a privacy friendly, real time, multi-browser, extension-free bookmark manager

Hi all !

I just released the first version of Gosuki, a multi-browser real time bookmark manager I have been writing on and off for the past few years. It aggregates your bookmarks in real time across all browsers and even external APIs such as Reddit and Github.

I was always annoyed by the existing bookmark management solutions and wanted a tool that just works without relying on browser extensions, self-hosted servers or cloud services. As a developer and Linux user I also find myself using multiple browsers simultaneously depending on the needs so I needed something that works with any browser and can handle multiple profiles per browser.

The few solutions that exist require manual management of bookmarks. Gosuki automatically catches any new bookmark in real time so no need to manually export and synchronize your bookmarks. It allows a tag based bookmarking experience even if the native browser does not support tags. You just hit ctrl+d and write your tags in the title.

Feature Highlights:

  • A single binary with no dependencies or browser extensions necessary. It just work right out of the box.
  • Use the universal ctrl+d shortcut to add bookmarks and call custom commands.
  • Tag with #hashtags even if your browser does not support it. You can even add tags in the Title. If you are used to organize your bookmarks in folders, they become tags
  • Real time tracking of bookmark changes
  • Builtin, local Web UI which also works without Javascript (w3m friendly)
  • suki cli command for a dmenu/rofi compatible output
  • Modular and extensible: Run custom scripts and actions per tags and folders when particular bookmarks are detected
  • Browser Agnostic: Detects which browsers you have installed and watch changes across all of them
  • Also handles multiple profiles per browser
  • Stores bookmarks in a portable sqlite database compatible with the Buku. You can use any program that was made for buku.
  • Can fetch your bookmarks from external APIs (Reddit and Github for now).
  • Easily extensible to handle any browser or API

It's open source with an AGPLv3 license, Checkout the README and website docs for more details.

Rape hoax redux: Debunking the latest relaunch of a genocidal atrocity propaganda lie

Today the Israeli death and rape-cult that has actually been engaged in systematic pedophilic gang-rape of Palestinian children, girls, boys, women and men is going to desperately try to re-launch the genocidal atrocity propaganda rape hoax.

Before I begin, this is essential: Haaretz itself citing the forensic pathologists at the Shura Base where all the bodies from October 7 were brought for detailed forensic analysis and autopsies stated that none of them, zero, had any signs of rape, sexual violence or genital mutilation. None of them. Zero.

So all these genocidal hoax-actors are proven liars. They are all established proven genocide-actors performing a script to ensure the actual mass systematic pedophilic gang-rape of Palestinian children, girls, boys, women and men continues until they have all been raped to death.

They link to the report which has now been published. Guess what? It cites Shari Mendes and ZAKA's Chaim Otmazgin as part of their cast of genocide-hoaxers, both of whom have been exposed as liars ages ago. Mendes said she saw non-existent fetuses cut from wombs. Otmazgin was forced to admit he lied about a rape he claimed he saw by the AP. Again, all of this was made public long ago and anyone who knows anything about the rape hoax is aware of this, as you can see here and here.

This by itself renders the entire "report" totally useless genocidal propaganda trash.

On page 38 they cite as evidence Otmazgin's claim that he has photos of a metal object inserted into a vagina. But the UN's Patten report, NBC News and Haaretz saw those photos and said he lied about it. I debunked the entire report in less than 10 seconds after I first opened it by just looking for this.

Yet again, a free open-source Chinese AI has beaten all the investor-funded favorites like OpenAI, Anthropic, Grok, etc.

cross-posted from: futurology.today/post/5555646

If you tend towards conspiracy theory-type thinking, you might wonder if the Chinese government is directing its AI sector to use open-source AI to undermine US AI efforts. If they aren't, is it just a coincidence that this is what is happening?

Two things seem inevitable to me if the trend of Chinese open-source AI equalling Western efforts keeps up. A) - It will eventually bankrupt the Western AI companies and their investors, as the hundreds of billions poured into them will never be realized in profits. B) The 21st century will be built on Chinese AI, as it will be what most of the world uses.

The former seems more dramatic in the short term, but the latter is what will be more significant in the long term.

Moonshot AI just released Kimi K2: China is not so behind in Agentic AI either it would seem.

British airbase used by Israeli war planes involved in bombing Gaza

At least three Israeli Air Force (IAF) jets have landed at RAF Brize Norton since September 2024, Drop Site reports.

KC-707 “Re’em” jets, which refuel other planes in the air, are said to have landed at the Oxfordshire base on at least nine occasions during trips between Israel and the US.

Of these stops, eight reportedly lasted more between one to three hours potentially indicating that the planes were refuelling.

Re’em military planes have been spotted refuelling Israeli F-35 bombers and two of those which stopped in the UK had also been observed providing refuelling and logistics support to planes engaged in bombing raids, Drop Site reports.

GDP is a terrible measure of genuine economic output, especially considering that it doesn't center production, but transaction and currency. A system highly financialized like the US, in reality, produces far less than China does, yet the US GDP is larger due to the dollar.

Plus, people still show up to argue all the time.

in reply to Cowbee [he/they]

Neither system is perfect. Physical goods (except resources, food and medicine) can become obsolete, demand may drop significantly (especially for luxury products), can be boycotted if you piss off citizens of a rival country enough and they are subject to tariffs, which is obviously relevant with the arrogant dickhead in the white house.

Edit: I think it's still fair to say that GDP is certainly good rough indication of how well a country is doing economically. Otherwise what would be the point if everyone thinks it is useless?

Questa voce è stata modificata (2 mesi fa)
in reply to nebulaone

Otherwise what would be the point if everyone thinks it is useless?

Capitalism trying to convince people it is still relevant and viable.

scientificamerican.com/article…

These examples illustrate the disjuncture between GDP and societal well-being and the many ways that GDP fails to be a good measure of economic performance. The growth in GDP before 2008 was not sustainable, and it was not sustained. The increase in bank profits that seemed to fuel GDP in the years before the crisis was not only at the expense of the well-being of the many people whom the financial sector exploited but also at the expense of GDP in later years. The increase in inequality was by any measure hurting our society, but GDP was celebrating the banks' successes. If there ever was an event that drove home the need for new ways of measuring economic performance and societal progress, the 2008 crisis was it.
in reply to nebulaone

Political Economy is complex. What GDP aims to measure is overall production, it's an explanation of wealth, however it paints a very uneven picture as it overvalues financial transactions and undervalues raw productive capacity. As a consequence, imperialist countries are overvalued (like the US), while production-focused countries are under-represented.

GDP is often pushed by liberal, western countries as it makes them look good. A more honest look, however, is multi-faceted and takes into account other metrics like social services, which often run into negative "profitability" or break even, as they aren't producing for profit. There's also the fact that the US doesn't outproduce in non-physical goods either. The US certainly has popular media and software, but it doesn't have overwhelming productive capacity in these areas.

The point of focusing on BRICS is because if you remove the financialized, almost ficticious look at capital as displayed by GDP, BRICS is more economically strong and significant, and this better reflects the real world, not just US-based self-perception.

in reply to Cowbee [he/they]

I think that is also a very one-sided view on this issue. The truth most likely lies somewhere in the middle. Germany for example has a lot of social services (universal healthcare, unemployment securities, etc.) and is still doing exceptionally well.
in reply to nebulaone

Germany is also imperialist. The countries that rely on imperialism have higher metrics by plundering the global south. It's kinda like looking at life expectancy of the rich vs the poor in any one country, the better metrics of the top come at the expense of the bottom.
in reply to nebulaone

They don't, really. Russia has like 6 of the world's top 500 companies, it couldn't rely on the same financial expropriation even if it wanted to simply because it utterly lacks the financial capital to do so. China is a production-focused economy, and the large firms and key industries are state owned. Even if we took the ideological aspects of Marxism-Leninism completely out of the picture, China is more economically incentivized to build up multilateralism so it can sell its products to the global south, and not rely so much on the US to offload its production to, as the US is constantly unreliable due to it wanting more capital penetration into Chinese markets (which the state rejects).
in reply to Cowbee [he/they]

And this is the point where any further discussion makes no sense. Goodbye.
in reply to nebulaone

Can you explain why? I think I made a pretty clear-cut case, is there something you take issue with?
in reply to nebulaone

What facts did I disagree with? Are you operating with a different concept of what imperialism means, ie a semantical difference but not a logical one? Or am I wrong about Russia having relatively small financial capital and thus lacking the capacity to practice imperialism in the same way western countries do? Or am I wrong about China's large and key industries being state owned, and their economy incentivizing multilateralism in order to sell more?

The first would be a semantical difference, not a disagreement with facts, the latter 2 would be if you could provide evidence to the contrary sufficient to outweigh what I said.

in reply to Cowbee [he/they]

This is just going to result in me pulling up a source that you don't deem reputable, only for you to pull up a source that I don't deem reputable.
in reply to nebulaone

Maybe, but that would be better than just saying I "disagree with facts" while being cagey about what those "facts" are. That's just ad hominem (and I mean that genuinely, you're trying to discredit me through insult, not just insult me).

Either way, ultimately, this topic has shifted entirely from the base of the conversation, which is trying to find a good measure of economic productivity, and how focusing on financialized capital masked by GDP obscures actual productivity. It's why imperialist countries are declining, and why the PRC is rising. I don't think we disagree that western countries are going downhill and that the PRC is improving, so identifying why is productive.

in reply to nebulaone

Fair enough. I recommend reading the ProleWiki page on imperialism I linked, it's much shorter than reading Lenin (though you absolutely should) and can help get you to look at the problems (presumably) we both experience in decaying western countries, and how we can chart a course for a better world. You can't find solutions without proper analysis of the underlying problems.
Questa voce è stata modificata (2 mesi fa)
in reply to Cowbee [he/they]

Seems like a very unbiased encyclopedia. If a methodology of analysis is skewed towards presenting what the author intended it is pretty much useless. I haven't read it yet, this is just a gut feeling, maybe I'll check it out tomorrow.
in reply to nebulaone

It's openly biased towards communism, it's a Marxist-Leninist encyclopedia. Wikipedia is also biased towards a western, liberal viewpoint. Truth is underlying and independent of interpretation, but how truth is presented is where bias shines through, and shine it does no matter where you find your source, as every source is biased. ProleWiki is nice because it includes its sources, even though it's a work in progress, and more importantly the article on imperialism is an explanation of the concept and how it exists in reality from the Marxist-Leninist point of view.

If someone has a different definition of imperialism, you can still read the ProleWiki article and appreciate it, just substitute "imperialism" with "Leninist imperialism," and read the article with that in mind. Saying a country does or doesn't meet the Leninist definition of imperialism doesn't mean it necessarily fits or doesn't fit other definitions of imperialism. The Leninist interpretation is widespread, however, because it's useful, and as such serves as an excellent explanation for how capitalism in developed countries functions and why it's simultaneously wealthy and declining rapidly.

It is the certainly not the opposite to being a coward, and it is synonymous with being intellectually lazy; like relying on thought terminating cliches such as "the truth most likely lies somewhere in the middle"

Rejecting political extremes on the basis of being extreme, and not the merits of the positions (or lack thereof), is the opposite of nuance. It's substituting critical thought for a rejection of the idea that one can both differ from the median viewpoint and be correct, which is logically absurd.

Once I was crossing a signalised intersection in Canada while the pedestrian light was on, and some jackass turning left on red (which is the most illegal way to run a red light btw) almost hit me and had to slam on the brakes, but what shocked me the most was that the driver behind them, also intending to turn left on red, fucking honked at the first driver for having the audacity to stop and get in their way instead of running me over.

I've also had multiple instances where I was about to cross an uncontrolled intersection and a driver (who's usually speeding to the point where I could tell with just my eyes) honks at me to get back on the sidewalk because they don't intend on stopping for me when the laws require them to. Also seen drivers turning right on red (which is legal here in BC for some reason) honking at pedestrians crossing with the light and demanding to go first when the laws say you're definitely supposed to wait until the cross walk clears.

This is why I hate drivers. They call cyclists and pedestrians entitled while doing shit like this.

Russia and Belarus plan to create AI model based on “traditional values”

Russia and Belarus intend to develop their own artificial intelligence model built on “traditional values” that would be “understandable” to citizens of both countries.

But they told me that these CIA/MI6/Mossad-backed Salafi Jihadists were moderate rebels. At least that terrible, horrible no good, very bad Bashar al-Assad is gone, though!

Video| Zionist Drone Raids Car in South Lebanon, Claims One Martyr

One Lebanese citizen embraced martyrdom after an Israeli drone raided his (Rapid) car with two missiles in Deir Kifa town, South Lebanon.

In the context of the Israeli attacks on the border area since this dawn, at approximately 6:30 a.m., an enemy Israeli reconnaissance aircraft dropped a sound bomb near a fishing boat off the coast of Ras Al-Naqoura.

An enemy reconnaissance aircraft also dropped a sound bomb in the vicinity of a destroyed house in the outskirts of the town of Dhahira, before later dropping a second bomb in the same town.

In a related development, enemy bulldozers established a new, small site near the newly established “Al-Hamames” site inside Lebanese territory, opposite the city of Khiyam. Furthermore, during the pre-dawn hours, Israeli bulldozers paved a 200-meter dirt road inside Lebanese territory in the town of Kfar Kila, extending from the wall toward the road leading to the “Shalhoub” station.

The occupying forces also dropped an incendiary bomb in the woods of the town of Sheheen, sparking a fire in the wooded area.

Israeli warplanes intensified their assaults last night, launching an airstrike on the rugged outskirts of Bodai in western Baalbek District, then conducting two more strikes on the highland areas near Flawi in the same region.

These attacks come in the context of Israeli violations of the ceasefire signed in November of last year, as Israel blatantly disregards all relevant international agreements and laws.

Good to see solidarity between socialist nations. Hopefully Cuba's contemporary struggles post-COVID can be overcome and they can get back on their feet, steadily progressing.

Hamas Deals Major Blow to Netanyahu before Trump Meeting: 6 Israeli Soldiers Dead, 10 Wounded in Firm Ambush North of Gaza

Disclaimer: casualty counts have already risen since Al-Manar published this

Six Israeli soldiers were killed, and 10 others were injured in a complex ambush carried out by the Palestinian resistance late Monday in northern Gaza, according to Zionist media outlets which underlined the loss of a soldier as well.

The southern command of Israeli Army started an immediate investigation into one of the hardest security incidents that faced the occupation forces in Gaza. Hospitals were prepared to receive the casualties, and the Zionist social media websites were filled with moaning and groaning over the harsh account.

According to the latest reports circulated by the Zionist media outlets, six soldiers were killed, and 10 others were injured in a firm ambush carried out by Al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas military wing, in Beit Hanoun, northern Gaza, late Monday.

The incident occurred when resistance fighters detonated an explosive device against an armored vehicle carrying soldiers and then targeted a robot loaded with tons of ammunition by an anti-tank missile while it was being prepared.

The resistance also targeted the Israeli rescue force that rushed into the scene. Residents of Ashkelon heard the sound of a “huge explosion,” according to Israeli news websites, which reported that one of the wounded was a senior officer.

“The recent incident in northern Gaza is still ongoing—intense fire belts and major chaos on the ground. One soldier remains missing, vehicles are burning, and all had entered areas rigged with explosive devices and were hit with RPG rounds,” the Zionist media reported.

Israeli media added that several Israeli soldiers were burned in northern Gaza.

Wounded soldiers are being evacuated from northern Gaza via military helicopters to five hospitals: Assuta Hospital in Ashdod, Soroka Hospital in Bersheba, Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva, Tel HaShomer Hospital in Ramat Gan, and Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem, according to the Zionist media.
