The reason the GOP won is because the DNC ran to the right in a country where the working class is increasingly radicalized. The largest block of society outright doesn't vote because they don't see a material difference in the outcome of the election, or because voting in their state doesn't matter as its solidly red or blue to begin with. Both parties support the bourgeoisie. Even if the DNC won, we would still be in the same mess, because the problems with our system is that it's a dying capitalist empire.

The DNC has also been actively socially pushing away one the largest voter demographics, white men.

Dems constantly let republicans get away with “causing more damage,” yet never seem capable of helping the working class when they get voted back into power. They could have helped us by including the public option in the bill, as it was originally designed to include by republican Mitt Romney. Instead, they simply used it as an opportunity to shovel 25 million Americans right into the pockets of insurance companies. Then-senator Biden dropped the public option before negotiations even began, as a “show of good faith to his esteemed Republican colleagues.” They left the insurance requirement in though, and even tried to add a system where we had to report it with taxes if we wanted refunds.
The part BBB is fucking up is honestly a travesty to begin with. It’s what allows Walmart to operate without insuring their employees, specifically training them to earn under certain amounts and work limited hours so that they can go on Medicare instead of the giant multinational corporation paying their fair share for their employees’ health.
Do you see the pattern here? Fuck these corporations for buying our government and using it against us to rob us blind. Both parties do help them with this, and it has got to stop because we’re at a breaking point.
Apart from that I am looking for a solution to a personal issue (see my other comment), I posted this because I was thinking this could be a great way to support other new Linux users and friends.
When I tried RustDesk it was not able to easily function on headless systems, including servers and my desktop PC if the monitor was powered off. Has that changed?
Anydesk and Teamviewer don't have that problem, but both companies have had hacking incidents and Teamviewer actually blamed their users instead of taking responsibility. Allowing 3rd parties of any type remote access to my computers is IMO just asking for trouble, especially for always-on systems.
Wireguard plus VNC isn't as seamless but it works fine the vast majority of the time. When I occasionally need features that VNC doesn't support, NoMachine is a full-featured, free for non-commercial use alternative that works great with WG.
Edit: It looks like the latest release of NoMachine now offers a intermediate network service that operates like Teamviewer and Anydesk. Access via intermediate network ID is not enabled by default, so with it disabled it should theoretically be more secure than the other apps.
I remote to a Mint on a laptop with a closed screen, and pop_OS that doesn't have a screen. (Second one has my jellyfin server). Connecting from my android phone and even my Windows laptop at my last job
Yeah if you still run into an issue for some reason add a virtual monitor in Windows, or "sudo rustdesk --option allow-linux-headless Y" (it's in the GUI as well) and it should take care of it, but I haven't had to do that
Ah, I haven't tried Apple products. Works with Mint, Android, PopOS, Debian, without any tinkering in my experience. I remote from my phone to my media server/laptop/and other junk when needed.
I assume only as long as remote is using adequate number of physical monitors? Or can one run a virtual guest with a single virtual monitor and then use as many monitors as host has?
I was talking with my brother who was supporting our mother on her Windows laptop. He was using TeamViewer for years but that company now requires to subscribe to an expensive license on top of this is a really security- and privacy-sensitive kind of access.
His main requirements are that the new solution are:
safe
very easy to use for the supported person
better works without VPN, public ports etc though this isn't mandatory.
So, it needs to be easy. I was first thinking in VNC but while I have been using TigerVNC for years in Home Office, this looks not exactly as easy as TeamViewer.
Last week was talking with our stand-in admin at work who turns out to know Linux well. He said he has very good experiences with RustDesk, uses it for home office and also for remotely accessing Windows machines.
There was some concerns about where it was being developed, I think it's entirely Chinese devs.
Ha, I am thinking since a while that for preventing one's internet access being hacked by a foreign power, it's probably best to chain an American-made router with a Chinese one so that they can firewall each other 😉
Such attacks against infrastructure are to be taken serious. But the xz-utils case and Stuxnet also have shown a few things:
Such attacks are incredibly time-consuming and expensive to mount.
Once sn attacker hits such a target, they have blown their powder - they can't continue to use it.
The xz-utils case shows that open source's many-eyed principle works astoundingly well.
xz-utils also confirms that in open source software, you can close a detected backdoor within hours - even if the maintainer of the software does not want that, since you can fork it in seconds. (And using Rust only makes this easier).
So, this topic of foreign state-actor backdoors is less a thing for individuals to worry about. (I agree that lawmakers of democratic states should absolutely worry about this, here a good article be Bert Hubert on the topic.)
However what is actually dangerous is the erosion of privacy and the rising amount of mandated surveillance. But if one is worried about that, one should not use closed-source software in the first place.
I also avoided it for some of these reasons, but in the end it was just the setup that got messy. I ended up using Sunshine/Moonlight for an overall nicer experience. I can use it to stream games if I’ve got a good connection, or toss it in low bandwidth mode for remote admin work. I run it behind Tailscale to access it from anywhere, it supports Wayland, it’s all fully open source, and I’m very happy with the setup.
I host Apache Guacamole on my server, and then VNC/RDP/SSH on the various PCs and servers on my network, so I can connect to them from anywhere, as long as I have a browser, my password manager and my 2-factor auth.
I have used many different RDP's, but RustDesk seems the best option. Yesterday I had to configure my Steam Deck and I am glad that RustDesk can be found in the Discover software manager.
I ran a Rustdesk server and it is constantly unreliable. It's very likely it's my fault and I lack the skills to fix it. I just decided to use Anydesk instead.
The poll found that more than 60 percent of all voters now support deportation of undocumented migrants, with Hispanic voters showing a notable uptick. Capitalist billionaires gaining control of world governments. Then using it to move the world to a modern reinteretation of feudalism. Is IMHO the actual cause of the increase.
The capitalists have always had control of governments within capitalism. States are not distinct from the ruling class, but an extension. What we are seeing is not a shift from capitalism to neofeudalism, but the consequences of the dying stages of capitalism before socialism. Capitalism has decayed and is dying due to monopolization and centralization of capital, and due to imperialism, but these same conditions prep capitalism for revolution and collective ownership and planning, into socialism.
In theory. And if you look at post war UK. It Def lead to a greater support for socialism, the forming of new party etc. removing our past 2 party system with a different one. The very one that no longer supports socialism.
But socialism cannot and will not grow it of nowhere. The US has never had a large support for it. The UK and much of Europe had people with respect pushing socialism in the 50 to 60. Ex soldiers seeing a whole new way of doing things built the very socialism we understand now.
The US just dose not have anyone effectively making arguments for this. Without such leaders. And honestly we also have non effective left in Europe anymore either.
Add to that. Their is absolutely no evidence of capitalism losing control. It is actually doing very well by it's own standards. As instead ideas like socialism are losing power while capitalism is effectively moving wealth into the hands of the few and most powerful.

This is a very myopic, eurocentric point of view. Capitalism in the global north is sustained by imperialism. The global south, and its suffering, is what keeps prices artificially low in the global north. This system is crumbling, and disparity is rising faster than ever in the global north as a consequence. Countries like Burkina Faso are kicking out occupiers like France, and BRICS is gaining as the west is falling in relevance.
Further, the UK did not go socialist, unless I'm misreading your meaning. Socialism, as it exists in the real world, can be found in countries like the PRC, Cuba, and former USSR. I'm not talking about welfare.
Further, the US is seeing normalization of socialism. Mamdani may be a socdem, but has implied a far more socialist line, ie collectivizing production. The assassination of the United Healthcare CEO is being met with united support among the working class, and parties like the Party for Socialism and Liberation are reporting record member growth.
Opinions aren't what drive social change, material conditions evolving and changing do. The material conditions of capitalism in the west are declining, and socialism is gaining. The global south is increasingly throwing off the shackles of imperialism. If you take a very myopic, eurocentric view, then it can be easy to only see companies getting larger and larger and disparity rising, but if you zoom out this very system is pushing the profit motive and capitalism with it to the brink.
Imperialism is the highest stage of the capitalist mode of production, in which monopolies and cartels become the prevalent economic force of society. Lenin synthesized...
But what are the conditions that are changing? Do we have all the information?
Capitalism is not the only process at play. Settler ontology will nurse capitalism back to health because the supposed weakening of capitalism isn't going to upend material settler realities in a way that forcloses it's usual reactions.
And furthermore, imperialism has not collapsed. There is no reason to believe the BRICS, or any other contemporary developments, actually challenges imperialism meaningfully. We should remind ourselves that there have been moments when people feared the collapes, and even when people suffered catastrophic collapse before. Capitalism remains. Settler-colonialism remains. Imperialism remains. All because we have no clue what America is and are incapable of addressing it without reconsituting it in new ways.
All very fair points, comrade. Ultimately, even if we can see the US on a downward spiral and countries like the PRC on the rise, we can't know for sure how this will pan out. All the more reason to get organized, rather than wait and see.
I don't disagree with the birth of capitalism. Although it is basically a new name for imperialism. It is the obvious effect of the post fudal middle class becoming the leadership post aristocratic rule. But it can also be an idea independent of its birth and leadership.
Where I disagree that anything currently existing can push those processes towards socialism. BRICC members are far from a socialist majority. Most nations in BRICC are equally supporting of the ideas of Capitalism. At least the ideas sold by those that use it for imperialism.
It is entirely possible. (Although far from probable) That BRICCs or a descendent from it. Will lead to the global south rising to take over from the current western default rule.
But for that future to be socialist it will need the leadership of those nations to think on socialist ways. And most simply do not do so ATM. Nor dose any probable event indicate a change in how these nations would run the world economy.
Unfortunately for Socialism to thrive. Yes you need opinions to have a major effect on world politics. Without it socialism as an ideal is impossible.
I'm not misunderstanding you, I simply disagree with you and your frame of analysis. Not everyone you speak to that disagrees is misunderstanding you, same with me.
You have a very idealist frame of analysis. Capitalism's persistence is not due to ideas, but material conditions. The compulsion for socialism isn't something won over because some people have socialist ideas, but because capitalism necessarily paves the way for socialism and creates its own demise.
Plus, the PRC is the largest economy in BRICS, and is a socialist country. Even if your frame of analysis requiring BRICS to have large socialist elements to supplant capitalism was correct, it's already correct, China eclipses every other economy in BRICS.

it just has made such great leaps in the realms of FSR and encoding.
i can attest, FSR4 looks incredible. i'm using it on Lies of P, which you just need the parameter for. any game with FSR3 support you only need the parameter.
i'm also using it on Returnal. Returnal only has FSR2, so for games like that, you need some assistance from OptiScaler.

ok, CyP2077. looks like it has FSR3 already, that's good. so add this launch parameter in steam:
PROTON_FSR4_UPGRADE=1 %COMMAND%
and set it to FSR3 in-game.
that should auto download the FSR4 dll to the game folder and you'll be good to go. note that the settings in game will still say FSR3, but it will be FSR4, since FSR4 only needs a dll drop-in to update from FSR3.
Those are environment variables. To use them you need to add %command% after them in games' launch options (e.g. PROTON_FSR4_UPGRADE=1 PROTON_USE_NTSYNC=1 %command%).

This could have two meanings, one of which I figure I should address: 1. If you mean "size of the userbase for an app," then yes, even projects that fly under the radar are much more secure than "mainstream" options. That's the main purpose of this infographic. 2. If you mean "physical size of the app on the infographic," the reason they're different sizes is simply because they were hard to fit on one page, and this made it look nice ;)
Proton VPN and Mullvad VPN are both open source, meaning their code can be publicly audited to make sure they're upholding their standards of privacy and security. Furthermore, Proton VPN offers a free tier. These are the main 2 reasons. NordVPN only protects your privacy against other websites, not NordVPN themselves. Hope this helps! Edit: Mullvad VPN can also be paid for in cash/Monero, and they don't ask for any personal information to use it (not even a username!)
Being open source doesn’t uphold a lot of standards of privacy and security for VPNs. It’s not useless, but the most common worry about VPNs is traffic logging, and open source apps do nothing to prevent this since it’s server side. ProtonVPN and Mullvad VPN don’t protect from themselves, and they can keep logs. The reason they’re commonly recommended is that they’re more trusted in the privacy community in general. Obscura VPN and Nym VPN do mostly protect from themselves because they’re a two-hop VPN. In the case of Obscura VPN, it’s a first hop through their servers, and a second hop through Mullvad’s. So to associate your traffic with your IP address, Obscura and Mullvad would need to cooperate, which is quite a bit less likely than a single VPN operator logging user traffic.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Nord. They are kind of disliked here because they’re not open source and they did a lot of commercials not long ago. Despite all that, they’ve publicly reported multiple third-party audits of their code, which I think is a good thing.
I just think the most trustworthy VPN is the one no one is talking about. NordVPN is a sponsor on every single YouTube video. They are mainstream. I don't trust mainstream. Mullvad has proven they don't keep logs. They are simple. They don't even have accounts. A 16 digit number is all you get to login. No pass. No email. No ties to you. You fill your subscription like quarters in a meter.
They don’t use Signal though. They use a clone called TeleMessage Signal which logs and archives all their messages on an Israeli server, and which a hacker was able to access before the service was suspended.
You can’t really help if someone forks and misuses software.
Some of those mentioned likely are compromised, but cannot figured out which. The thing, is to diversify our risk and the privacy minded to use different platforms (Proton VPN and Mullvad VPN for instance).
The good news, is that if an agency is compromising something, they will likely won't use the intel gathered in court cases in order to leave it open to future prey, so that is good for vast majority of users. The very few that are relevant enough should not trust even the genuine privacy tools and resort to enhanced methods and combining methodologies.
My impression, and just impression, is that I would trust Tuta **more than Proton (and not because Proton's CEO that many interpreted wrong anyways) On VPN... a tad more trust on **Mullvad. Signal, I would not use it for high stakes communication but OK for most people. GrapheneOS seems okay and we know for sure it does not leak info on a daily basics, but we have to be careful, it could have an obscure code dormant waiting for a trigger or could easily send data to an unsuspected server, Ironically, if I were Snoden, I would feel more comfortable using a Huawei Mate with HarmonyOS than a Pixel 9 with GrapheneOS... of course China spies too massively, but it has far less beef with Snoden than the US does, therefore not of much interest to Beijing.
Remember that overwhelming majority of FOSS goes without any audit, let alone a comprehensive one. This is what some trusted party should put AI checking ASAP all the FOSS out there!
Very interesting insights. Funnily I use all of the services you cautiously recommend, including GrapheneOS, but not HarmonyOS, hard pass on that one. As a German I am also legally required to prefer Tuta. 😀 I still have that OG 1€/Month contract.
Edit: Your last point is a good idea, although I think the more popular an open source app is, the less likely it is to be malicious. A lot more eyes on it and the xz backdoor was caught pretty much immediately.
Of course... for us normies... GrapheneOS is the way to go. Very high targeted individuals in the West should however consider HarmonyOS. Of Course the Chinese government has eyes on that one but not specifically targeting you... unless they use it to trade intel on someone of high interest for China but no much collaboration between West and China intelligence agencies today...
True, popularity increases the chances someone auditing. But, to a point. Ideally audit should be performed with every single update and on the servers, and there the premise of more eyes does not hold true no more. Then it comes trust. In a company like Tuta, the people behind showed their faces from day one, the same people are there, is a tight team so harder for a bad apple to do something. Considering both Tuta and Proton were good from inception (and I believe it may be the case), it would probably would be easier for an intelligence agency to penetrate Proton than Tuta, just for the structure that appears they have from outside. Now, Tuta made a horrible mistake once! In the Russian invasion of Ukraine, independently of one's take on it, Tuta made the "Standing with Ukraine" (March 2022); that was a mistake, it may many doubt if privacy still their paramount over any other ideology. Maybe they have change since since no statements on Gaza... or maybe they agree with what is happening... who knows... that is why they should not make any statements at all, or clarify that while they have their ideologies in no case, ever will compromise their stands on privacy. To be fair, Proton did the same... nothing on Ukraine but on Gaza "We unequivocally condemn the terrorist attacks by Hamas against Israeli civilians […] We also condemn violence against civilians in Gaza"; so I guess both are comparable here! My trust for both is slim, as a company, and even their individuals.
For Proton it is the "tech bro"-y feeling and for Signal it is wondering about financing. Also, if you are paying for your own audits there is an obvious conflict of interest.

As someone who had to contract auditing firms every year, and personally sign off in their report as part of our compliance, I would love to hear how I should have ....what? Won the audit lottery? Applied for some sort of government assistance? Prayed to an audit fairy godmother?
Who the F else is paying for our audit? I want free audits! I bet everyone does.
My guess is they think that since you're paying for the audit the auditors won't bust you for fraud, which is cute, since the auditors are asked to audit specific things that the company asks them to audit. They're not released on the company like witch hunters, with wide open access to everything, cutting a swathe through fraud and criminality while people are furiously burning documents in the basement. So there is no conflict of interest, since the auditors are looking at what the people using them are asking them to look at.
I know, it's just kind of laughably shouting they don't know what either an audit or conflict of interest actually are.
The hardest part some times is finding an audit firm that isn't stupid expensive, but also won't do a shit job and give you a report that looks like some knock-off free LLM didn't write it to maximize their own payday. I love a good audit report with findings, it means I didn't waste money. But my shit is (well, was, at another place years back) locked down tight, so we didn't ever expect anything terrible.
Same here, everyone was so stressed about "the audit" but we had written common sense processes and executed them as needed, with mechanisms in place to flag potential areas for improvement if we found gaps.
Bitcoin's Lightning Network has onion routing for privacy, like Tor.
When Bitcoin had a bug that allowed some guy to give himself a bazillion bitcoin, it was detected and patched before he was able to sell them. When Monero encounters a similar bug, it will only be detectable by the price going down.
I'm not super knowledgeable on how anonymous such routing us, hence I avoid it.

One of the ways that they determine if you're malicious/human or not is to check if you have a Google cookie in your browser and are signed in. Not to mention fingerprinting (hardware and software info), browsing data, AI training ironically enough (the fucking streetlights), etc etc.

But you do know that Tor/VPN is not really privacy, nor security? It hides your IP, but that's about it. If you still login, and give any information, and that could just be your "fingerprint" you are not anonymous...

I2P is king here but it has a limitation that makes it stronger but less practical. I2P doesn’t generally do outproxies. A few exist but they typically aren’t trusted or used. Instead, I2P tries to keep private by only routing around traffic the originated within its own network rather than piping things from clearnet from one place to another. An issue with arrives that do that is you can see traffic from a honey pot going into a black box and with enough monitoring where it ends up leaving that black box. It’s very difficult to track traffic flow within the network but once it jumps back into clear net you can find it again.
Now while you can argue that it doesn’t come out on clearnet, just originates from there, I counter that with Microsoft Windows telemetry, it might as well be clearnet. Windows is the dominant player at the moment so it’s most likely the traffic ends up on a windows machine. There are really benefits behind the telemetry date but they also means there’s a single point an authoritarian regime can apply pressure to to monitor whatever they want. With advances in AI, chewing through tons of collected data is much easier to do, so the idea of “they can’t stop all of us” is ridiculous. They will just pick off the undesirables in smaller chunks.
Ultimately nothing is completely safe but if you really value privacy, make yourself such an enormous pain in the ass that monitoring you becomes a chore.
Encryption is a type of security, and Tor/VPNs encrypt your traffic. Accessing .onion sites over Tor is (at least in theory) more secure than accessing clearnet sites.

I'd lived in a very swing state, in a very swing county and thanks to that predicted elections like no pollster did (even Trump in 2016 as he came down a escalator and every media laughed at him)... I saw no more malice in an average Trump voter than a Kamala one, I find a portion of them both as equally racist (some 30% I would say), one just is more vocal and explicit while the other chooses to express the racism passively aggressive.... ClamAV is an open source antivirus, but I would recommend against using an antivirus altogether due to their invasive nature. You shouldn't need one with proper sandboxing and isolation.
ClamAV is slow to get updates and frankly not a great tool to use. AV is a must as isolation and sandboxing are only as good as the next exploit. Not too mention scams like phishing are not stopped by isolation.

Proton is a company like any other that has to comply with laws in the country they operate in, but unlike a lot of other companies, they don't log data UNLESS YOU ASK THEM TO.

I have a normal Googled Android phone and tinkered with a bunch of settings so that only what I can't uninstall or disable remains on it.
If I run a vpn on it then the Googled OS may still know my location(from wifi and bluethooth scanning that it may be doing nonstop) and browser searches.
In that case, would the vpn only mask my activity from my internet service provider?

How could we be alone if there's other life in the universe? Say we're isolated or something, a long way from that other life. But that doesn't mean we're alone, as alone would generally imply without others.
The thing that gets me is that even if we catch sight of what is indisputably signs of intelligent life from another planet, due to the magnitude of the universe and the comparatively slow speed of light, what we're seeing is thousands or millions of years in the past. Even if we get a transmission from an alien species, they're likely long extinct by the time we receive it, let alone the time it will take for a reply to get back to them.
Same for us too. Any life that can see us will not be from our time, they will be eons in the future by which our species will be long gone.
Indeed, and another point to consider is that it's highly unlikely we'd observe a civilization at our level of development. Life on Earth appears around 4.5 billion years ago. Humans start evolving around 2.8 million years ago. Use of language appears around 100,000 years ago. Writing is invented around 5500 years ago.
Inventions of language and writing are the landmark moment here. Before language was invented the only way information could be passed down from ancestors to offspring was via mutations in our DNA. If an individual learned some new idea it would be lost with them when they died. Language allowed humans to communicate ideas to future generations and start accumulating knowledge beyond what a single individual could hold in their head. Writing made this process even more efficient.
So, after millions of years of life on Earth no technological development happened. Then when language was invented humans started creating technology, and in a blink of an eye on cosmological scale we went from living in caves to visiting space in our rocket ships. It’s worth taking a moment to really appreciate just how fast our technology evolved once we were able to start accumulating knowledge using language and writing.
Now let’s take a look at how technology itself has been evolving. Once we discovered radio communication we went through a noisy period where we were leaking a lot of our broadcasts into space, and within a span of a 100 years we started using more efficient communication, and encryption. If somebody intercepted our broadcasts today they would look like noise because they’re designed to look like noise. Our society today is utterly and completely unrecognizable to somebody from even a 100 years ago. If we don’t go extinct, I imagine that in another thousand years future humans will be completely alien to us as well.
So the period during which intelligent life would be recognizable to us during its course of evolution is infinitesimally small. The time between creating language and becoming an advanced technological society is measured in thousands of years, while evolution of life is measured in millions of years. The chance of two different intelligences finding each other at exact same stage of development where they might be able to communicate is incredibly unlikely.
I would also imagine that the biological phase for intelligent life is rather short. We’re likely to develop human style AIs within a century, and they will be the ones to go out and explore the universe. Meat did not evolve to live in space, we’re adapted to gravity wells. An artificial life form could be engineered to thrive in space without ever needing to visit planets. This is the kind of life that’s most likely to be prolific in space. Furthermore, post biological intelligences would likely be running at much faster speeds than our mental processes operate on. What we consider real-time would be might we consider to be geological scales. Such beings might consider what we view as real time akin to the way we look at continental drift. We're aware that it's happening, but it's of little interest to use on day to day basis. It's quite possible that advanced civilizations become solipsistic and care little for the outside universe.
For all we know the Universe may be teeming with intelligent life and we just don’t recognize it as such. We might be like an ant hill next to a highway looking to see if there are other ant hills around.

Israel’s official Holocaust memorial, Yad Vashem, has condemned the installation of new plaques in Poland at the site of the Jedwabne pogrom, during which hundreds of Jews were burned alive in World War Two.
It says that the inscriptions – which were installed as part of a crowdfunded alternative memorial and not by any official body – “falsify history” by trying to absolve Poles of blame for the massacre.
On Wednesday, Gazeta Wyborcza, a leading Polish newspaper, reported that seven large boulders had been placed near the official Jedwabne memorial.
The objects had appeared there shortly before today’s commemoration of the 84th anniversary of the pogrom, which occurred when Poland was under Nazi-German occupation.
Official findings by Poland’s state Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) have established that the direct perpetrators of the massacre were ethnic Poles who lived in the area. But it also noted that broader responsibility for the crime rested with the German occupiers.
However, many in Poland – in particular on the political right – question those findings, arguing that the pogrom was entirely the work of the Germans and claiming that the tragedy has been used as part of efforts to falsely shift blame onto Poles for Holocaust crimes.
One of the newly installed plaques reads, in Polish and English, that “evidence and witness accounts disprove the claims of Polish perpetration of the murder of Jews in Jedwabne…In reality, this crime was committed by a German unit”.
Another says that the fact Poland disappeared from the map of Europe for 123 years between 1795 and 1918 was “an unimaginable tragedy for Poles…[but] a source of satisfaction for many Jews”.
A further one says that, in the interwar period, “many Jews openly sympathised with communism, identified with the Soviets, who were hostile to Poland”, reports Gazeta Wyborcza.
The newspaper notes that Wojciech Sumliński – an author who has written books questioning the official findings regarding Jedwabne – spoke two years ago about installing such plaques as part of an alternative “monument” that would recognise the “truth” about Jedwabne.
Sumliński himself confirmed on Wednesday in a social media post that he was behind the new installation, which was paid for through a crowdfunding campaign. On Thursday, he and a large crowd of supporters gathered for the official opening of the new memorial, marking the occasion with a Catholic mass.
On Thursday, Yad Vashem issued a statement saying that it is “profoundly shocked and deeply concerned by the desecration of historical truth and memory at the Jedwabne memorial site in Poland”.
It says that the new plaques are “an apparent attempt to distort the story of the massacre of Jews” in order to “absolve the perpetrators” through the “blatant falsification of history”.

I've very barely dipped my toes in dbus before, and the option to have something else is on its face attractive (not a fan of XML and the late 90s/early aughties style of oop), but JSON for a system interface?
I mean, Kubernetes shows that yaml can work, but in this day and age I'd expect several options for serialisation, and for the default to be binary, not strings.
String serialisations are primarily for humans IMO, either as readers or writers. As writers we want something with comments (and preferably no "find the missing }" game), so for that most of us would prefer something like TOML if the data is simple enough, and actually Yaml for complexity at the level of Kubernetes—JSON manages to be even more of a PITA at that level.
But machine-to-machine? Protobuf, cap'n'proto, postcard, even CBOR should all be alternatives to examine
JSON is not the optimal solution for either humans nor for machines... it's a compromise in-between that is more complex to parse than most binary alternatives (and even some text-based ones, if the data can be represented in CSV tables for example), while also often requiring post-processing through beautifiers and similar to be able to visualize it cleanly for humans.
There are situations where it's the format that makes the most sense.. like in the web, where you are already working with javascript anyway. But it's not a golden bullet to use everywhere.

Indeed, writing tech articles on Medium has allowed me to get some extra income/free-time in between jobs, which I use to upskill myself and then share what I learn with the community (with some amount of friction regarding the paywall). This self-reinforcing loop is quite appealing to me, and - I would argue - aligns somewhat with my take on the Kantian categorical imperative.
For what it's worth, I like the typesetting. Medium also has extremely good SEO, likely from some direct negotiation with search engines, I assume. Eventually I plan to move my tech writings to my own blog, with some sort of minimal ad system, no paywalls. Also, I usually unpaywall my tech articles after the window of high income dries up.

Using Adobe is just fucking sloppy. Not to mention, I'm pretty sure Adobe own any content that got uploaded to their servers during the edit. They likely have at least frames of it sitting on their servers if not the whole video.

Saying "I don't believe X conspiracy theory" is understandable. But saying you don't believe in any "conspiracy theory". Like, you think that the government just always tells the truth and doesn't cover up anything?
I believe in conspiracies as a general concept, like the two guards, and I believe governments have classified programs. When it gets to a certain point where vast numbers of people are involved in covering up something huge perfectly, you run into the problem of everything being possible and nothing being falsifiable, though.
In practice, people don't believe in conspiracy theories because they honestly assess it's the neatest way to explain the world, it's because they get emotional satisfaction out of the community and the feeling that they know something which other people don't. There's psychology literature about it and everything.
What I said is my goto answer when I suspect I'm about to be arguing about melting steel beams or whatever, because that's just a waste of time.
There is an additional psychological mechanism at play here to be aware of, which is that some criminal actions taken by the government (in order to protect ruling class interests) would destroy the legitimacy of their claim to power if admitted to. The importance of controlling the narrative around so-called State Crimes Against Democracy therefore becomes existential.
Marxists are more aware of this dynamic because they understand the nature of power structures. It's also to be the same reason their theories are viciously attacked by the ruling class.

After reading the article, it's not even clear it was tampering, as opposed to conversion and compilation of the original file formats. And apparently, if the footage is what it appears to be, he actually did kill himself.

I would assume it's to make the metadata seem more reasonable, so people pay less attention to the cut. 'The "perfectly innocent" act of "touching it up" is the reason the metadata says what it does, not because we removed part of it. Don't look any closer!'
The article mentions that. They supposedly released 2 versions, one "enhanced" to help make the relevant parts of the image easier to see, which certainly matches the description of "modified" and the other, the same footage but described as "raw" implying that it wasn't "modified" in that way.
There are a lot of plausible and likely explanations for the Adobe metadata schema information that is in the file that don't involve deceptively manipulating footage to hide something that was in that footage before public presentation, then again, given the circumstances and supposed rationale behind publicly presenting this footage, failing to release it with untouched unmodified metadata from the camera original source files is not a good look. Failing to then answer questions about that makes it look even worse. This is is especially true when, although there is no answer they could give that would actually totally convince everyone, there are as I said many plausible explanations they could have offered and yet they were just silent.
Ironically, as is so often the case with anything like this, depending on the interpretive lens you're using this issue with the metadata helps confirm either assertion, that there was cover up and Epstein was murdered, or that there was no such cover up and he really did kill himself. Obviously, the fact that it's modified lends credence to the idea they're hiding something because one might expect that if they weren't it'd be easy to just supply the footage with metadata more reflective of a surveillance system than Adobe software. However one could also say that, modifying metadata in a way that is undetectable should actually be relatively easy and the fact that they couldn't be bothered to do that, or didn't know how, or never thought of metadata being present in the first place could suggest it's not deceptive skullduggery so much as technical incompetence and sloppiness - too sloppy for competent conspiracists. On the other hand, they could also be sloppy and incompetent conspiracists who just did an awful job. That's not altogether unlikely either since the entire supposed suicide they potentially conspired to have people believe is a very suspicious cover story to begin with so not exactly an expertly conceived plan, more improvisational and done in a hurry which would kind of track with them botching later actions to take the heat off.

The United States Department of Justice this week released nearly 11 hours of what it described as “full raw” surveillance footage from a camera positioned near Jeffrey Epstein’s prison cell the night before he was found dead. The release was intended to address conspiracy theories about Epstein’s apparent suicide in federal custody. But instead of putting those suspicions to rest, it may fuel them further.
Metadata embedded in the video and analyzed by WIRED and independent video forensics experts shows that rather than being a direct export from the prison’s surveillance system, the footage was modified, likely using the professional editing tool Adobe Premiere Pro. The file appears to have been assembled from at least two source clips, saved multiple times, exported, and then uploaded to the DOJ’s website, where it was presented as “raw” footage.
Experts caution that it’s unclear what exactly was changed, and that the metadata does not prove deceptive manipulation. The video may have simply been processed for public release using available software, with no modifications beyond stitching together two clips. But the absence of a clear explanation for the processing of the file using professional editing software complicates the Justice Department’s narrative. In a case already clouded by suspicion, the ambiguity surrounding how the file was processed is likely to provide fresh fodder for conspiracy theories.
Any aspect of the official story that isn’t fully explained will be co-opted by conspiracy theorists, says Mike Rothschild, an author who writes about conspiracy theories and extremists. “So whatever your flavor of Epstein conspiracy is, the video will help bolster it.”
For months leading up to the joint memo the DOJ and FBI published Monday, attorney general Pam Bondi had promised the release of records related to Epstein, raising expectations that new, potentially incriminating details might surface about the disgraced financier’s death and his ties to powerful individuals. However, rather than revealing new information, the memo largely confirmed conclusions reached years earlier: that Epstein was found in a Manhattan prison cell on August 10, 2019, and died by suicide while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.
To support its conclusion, the FBI reviewed surveillance footage overlooking the common area of the Special Housing Unit (SHU) at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC), where Epstein was held. The FBI enhanced the footage by adjusting contrast, color, and sharpness, and released both the enhanced and what it described as the “raw” version. Both versions of the video appear to have been processed using Premiere and include much of the same metadata. According to the FBI, anyone entering the area containing Epstein’s cell during the relevant time frame would have been visible on that camera.
Working with two independent video forensics experts, WIRED examined the 21-gigabyte files released by the DOJ. Using a metadata tool, reporters analyzed both Exchangeable Image File Format (EXIF) and Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP) data to identify signs of postprocessing.
The “raw” file shows clear signs of having been processed using an Adobe product, most likely Premiere, based on metadata that specifically references file extensions used by the video editing software. According to experts, Adobe software, including Premiere and Photoshop, leaves traces in exported files, often embedding metadata that logs which assets were used and what actions were taken during editing. In this case, the metadata indicates the file was saved at least four times over a 23-minute span on May 23, 2025, by a Windows user account called “MJCOLE~1.” The metadata does not show whether the footage was modified before each time it was saved.
The embedded data suggest the video is not a continuous, unaltered export from a surveillance system, but a composite assembled from at least two separate MP4 files. The metadata includes references to Premiere project files and two specific source clips—2025-05-22 21-12-48.mp4 and 2025-05-22 16-35-21.mp4. These entries appear under a metadata section labeled “Ingredients,” part of Adobe’s internal schema for tracking source material used in edited exports. The metadata does not make clear where in the video the two clips were spliced together.
Hany Farid, a professor at UC Berkeley whose research focuses on digital forensics and misinformation, reviewed the metadata at WIRED’s request. Farid is a recognized expert in the analysis of digital images and the detection of manipulated media, including deepfakes. He has testified in numerous court cases involving digital evidence.
Farid says the metadata raises immediate concerns about chain of custody—the documented handling of digital evidence from collection to presentation in a courtroom. Just like physical evidence, he explains, digital evidence must be handled in a way that preserves its integrity; metadata, while not always precise, can provide important clues about whether that integrity has been compromised.
“If a lawyer brought me this file and asked if it was suitable for court, I’d say no. Go back to the source. Do it right,” Farid says. “Do a direct export from the original system—no monkey business.”
Farid points to another anomaly: The video’s aspect ratio shifts noticeably at several points. “Why am I suddenly seeing a different aspect ratio?” he asks.
Farid cautions that while the metadata clearly shows the video was modified, the changes could be benign—for example, converting footage from a proprietary surveillance format to a standard MP4.
While there may be uncontroversial explanations for the metadata artifacts, such as stitching together multiple days of footage during compilation, or the routine export of surveillance footage to an mp4 format, the FBI did not respond to specific questions about the file’s processing, instead referring WIRED to the DOJ. The DOJ in turn referred inquiries back to the FBI and the Bureau of Prisons. The BOP did not respond to a request for comment.
According to a 2023 report from the DOJ Office of the Inspector General (OIG), MCC, the detention facility where Epstein was found hanged, had around 150 analog surveillance cameras—but starting on July 29, 2019, a technical error prevented roughly half of them from recording, including most inside the SHU.
The system was scheduled for repairs on August 9, the night before Epstein was found dead. But the technician assigned to fix it couldn’t access the necessary equipment because the corrections officer required to escort him was nearing the end of their shift.
As a result, only two cameras were operational near the SHU at the time MCC staff found Epstein hanging in his cell: one covering the common area and stairwells near the entrance to the adjacent 10 South Unit, and another monitoring a ninth-floor elevator bay. Neither captured Epstein’s cell door.
According to the DOJ’s memo, the footage confirms that from the time Epstein was locked in his cell at approximately 8 pm on August 9, 2019, and between around 10:40 pm and 6:30 am the next morning, no one entered the tier where his cell was located. However, the recording includes a notable gap: Approximately one minute of footage is missing, from 11:58:58 pm to 12:00:00 am. The video resumes immediately afterward.
The OIG’s report found no evidence of a conspiracy to kill Epstein. Instead, it documented years of chronic staffing failures and system breakdowns at MCC. The facility was temporarily closed in 2021 after the DOJ essentially deemed conditions unfit for incarceration.
At a press conference on Tuesday, Bondi attributed the missing minute to a flaw in the surveillance system’s daily cycle, claiming that one minute is missing from every night’s recording.
Given the years of high-profile conspiracy theories surrounding Epstein, any perceived inconsistency in the official narrative is likely to draw intense scrutiny. Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones called the DOJ memo “sickening.” “Next the DOJ will say, ‘Actually, Jeffrey Epstein never even existed,’” he wrote in a post on X.
“In the world of conspiracy theories, evidence that disproves something happened becomes proof that something happened,” says Rothschild. He explains that the case of Epstein's death is a good example of this phenomenon. “Every piece of evidence that points to him taking his own life—the negligence of the prison staff, the disrepair of the cameras, the coroner's report—is turned into evidence that he was killed by powerful figures who weren't competent enough to cover up the crime correctly.”
The apparent gaps in the video, Rothschild says, will naturally inflame these suspicions.
One media forensics expert, who reviewed the metadata and agreed with WIRED’s analysis but requested anonymity due to privacy concerns and a desire to avoid having their name publicly associated with anything related to the Epstein case, put it bluntly: “It looks suspicious—but not as suspicious as the DOJ refusing to answer basic questions about it.”

The images, analyzed by The Associated Press and provided by Planet Labs PBC, showed that a geodesic dome, known as Radome, which housed key secure communications equipment used by U.S. forces, was present at the base just hours before the Iranian attack, but was no longer visible in subsequent images.
“Planet Labs photos showed the geodesic dome intact on the morning of June 23, the day of the Iranian retaliation,” the findings indicated. “Later images, taken from June 25, showed the dome missing, with visible burn marks and damage to an adjacent building.”
So far, U.S. and Qatari authorities have not offered an immediate official response on the extent of the damage, and neither government has publicly acknowledged the incident.

Polish prosecutors have launched an investigation into far-right leader Grzegorz Braun after he declared the gas chambers at Auschwitz to be “fake” and said it is a “fact” that Jews have committed ritual slaughter of Christians. Denial of Nazi crimes is an offence in Poland that carries a jail sentence of up to three years.
Braun, who finished fourth in the recent presidential elections with 6.3% of the vote, made his remarks during an interview today with radio station WNET. The veteran far-right politician, who is a member of the European Parliament, has a long history of hateful and conspiratorial rhetoric regarding Jews and other minorities.
During the interview, Braun referred to what he claimed are the “lies of the Talmud, the Haggadah [two Jewish religious texts], and the Holocaust”. He said that Jewish organisations “condemn those who tell the truth that ritual murder is a fact and Auschwitz with its gas chambers is a lie”.
A longstanding antisemitic canard is that Jews murder Christians, in particular children, and use their blood for religious rituals. Meanwhile, many modern antisemites deny the fact that gas chambers were used at Auschwitz and other German-Nazi camps to murder Jews during the Holocaust.
After the interviewer contested Braun’s remarks, he reiterated them, saying that the Auschwitz Museum provides a “pseudo-historical account” about what happened at the camp and blocks research into the gas chambers. He also cited a book by an Israeli historian that he says proves Jews carried out ritual murder.
That led the interviewer to immediately cut short the broadcast, saying that there “are limits to political cynicism and sensationalism when it comes to several million victims and their memory”.
Subsequently, Anna-Maria Żukowska, head of the parliamentary caucus of The Left (Lewica), one of the groups that make up Poland’s ruling coalition, announced that she was filing a complaint to prosecutors regarding Braun’s remarks.
She accused him of violating article 55 of Poland’s law on the Institute of National Remembrance, which criminalises public denial of Nazi and communist crimes. Those found guilty can be punished by up to three years in prison.
Late on Thursday afternoon, the district prosecutor’s office in Warsaw announced that it had initiated an investigation into whether Braun had committed the offence of denying Nazi crimes.
Meanwhile, Piotr Cywiński, the director of the Auschwitz Museum, which is a Polish state institution, issued a statement condemning Braun’s “scandalous” comments, which he said were not only a violation of the law but also “an insult to the memory of the victims of the camp”.
“Grzegorz Braun’s words are not a ‘political provocation’, but a conscious lie and an act of ideological, antisemitic hatred,” said Cywiński. “They cannot remain without a decisive response from the state and all decent people – for whom the memory of Auschwitz is of particular importance.”
The museum director noted that, while it was primarily Jews who were victims of the gas chambers of Auschwitz, ethnic Poles, Soviet prisoners of war, and Roma were also murdered in them.
At least 1.3 million prisoners were transported to Auschwitz during the war, with at least 1.1 million of them killed at the camp. Around one million of those victims were Jews, most of whom were murdered in gas chambers immediately after their arrival. The second largest group of victims were ethnic Poles.
Cywiński said that the museum would itself file a notification to prosecutors regarding Braun’s remarks. He also appealed to Polish media to stop giving space to Braun, who “has repeatedly shown that he cannot function in the public space without vandalism, lies, hate speech and racism”.
Last week, Braun was presented by prosecutors with seven sets of charges relating to four incidents, including his attack on a Jewish religious celebration in parliament two years ago.
He is also being investigated over a series of incidents during the recent presidential election campaign, including when he vandalised an LGBT+ exhibition, made antisemitic remarks during a televised debate, and removed a Ukrainian flag from a public building.

Jewish brisket is different from Texas smoked brisket. First of all, it's braised rather than smoked. It's cooked with carrots, celery and onions in a mixture of crushed tomatoes and wine and seasoned relatively simply with salt, garlic, pepper, thyme and bay leaves. While I think the smoked kinds are generally better sliced thin on a sandwich, a braised Jewish brisket is such a core memory of the Passover Sedar (the ceremonial meal described in the Haggadah) that I savor it in its own way. I've made em for Rosh Hashanah as well. All that's to say, your milage may vary and so you might not find it to your liking.
BUT, the method is fairly simple.
Season a whole brisket with salt and pepper, brown it in a large roasting pan. Once browned, remove it and add in your aromatics (onion, carrot, garlic, celery, whatever you want) and brown those slightly too. Deglaze with wine, add in Dr. Pepper or cola, add in tomatoes and ketchup (use less if using soda). Add the brisket back in, your herbs, then roast low and slow at around 275°F to 300°F for 3 to 4 hours, should be fork tender. Once it's cooked, pull it out, let it rest for like a half hour, slice it thin, put it back in the roasting pan with the juices, baste it, cover it, let it sit somewhere warm for another half hour while it soaks up the braising liquid.
Ideally you want a brisket with the deckle, but if you got a first cut brisket, don't trim the fat, you wanna render that out during the cook. You can skim it off the resulting braising liquid after the cook if you'd like.
Also the recipe isn't set in stone. Play with it! It's supposed to be a bit sweet, so I've thrown in figs and apricots, seasoned the top of sumac and pomegranate, za'atar isn't unwelcome here, if atypical.
Quick question about rendering the fat. In the point of the brisket specifically, there is a middle layer of fat that is very hard to render due to its location. What is the best solution for rendering that out, especially when cooking at such a high temperature and such a low amount of time compared to smoked brisket?
I haven't had an issue with this layer so I'm not sure what to tell you. It gets soft and juicy in the process, but you can keep cooking it if you want it more thoroughly rendered. Just be mindful that there's enough braising liquid in the pan.
