Hacker o supereroi: rivalutiamo Superman III

How to help workers suffering from AI-related job losses

  • Some companies have already laid off employees due to automation and AI. Some research and tech CEOs indicate this will continue to increase.
  • Given the scale of these losses, policymakers need to consider how to best support workers, especially those in vulnerable positions or who may lack the resources to fully participate in the digital economy.
  • Expanding benefits, loosening job licensing requirements, increasing retraining, and ensuring access to high-speed internet can all help with this transition.

Pair Behind 400 Block-Evading Pirate Porn Sites Face Prosecution

Law enforcement authorities in Vietnam will prosecute the operators of around 400 pirate sites offering pornographic content. Such material is illegal in Vietnam and the authorities say the men made large profits from visitors viewing lucrative advertising. Also of note are claims that the men circumvented blocking measures at ISPs either owned by, or closely connected to, the government.

Tux-Based Game Studio

Extending the vote to here since well it is Linux. I probably should have posted here first but oh well. Let me know which genre of Tux game you would want made first.

in reply to atmorous

Definitely keep it simple for the first game. A Smash like was recommended in the other thread. I think that's a fantastic idea. Start with a small roster of two characters and one stage and improve from there.
in reply to Björn Tantau

That's a pretty good beginner project. More characters, more stages, and more gimmiks leaves plenty of room grow, but still something to be proud of early.

The real question is why I even replied when I'm sure I know you're a disingenuous troll.

Based on the downvotes in this thread and the other one you posted, it seems no one like your opinion or feigned ignorance. But don't take to mean you're an underground hero, some takes really are just that bad.

in reply to geneva_convenience

Really not sure what the point of your ire is here. And you’re kind of coming off like an ass.

AIPAC and the people they influence are notorious for twisting and misrepresenting rhetoric that’s even slightly critical of the Israeli government. It pays to be extremely deliberate and careful when speaking publicly on those topics. You and I may understand the nuance of Mamdani’s position, but (to be blunt) a lot of more stupid and/or less engaged voters on NYC won’t necessarily have the same reaction. You’ll probably deride me as a “centrist” for saying this, but to ignore the propagandistic influence that AIPAC exerts is essentially an unforced error. So, yes, it is a absolutely good and correct to call out Bibi’s genocidal campaign, but it is a way better idea to do that in a specific, careful, and nuanced fashion, in the interest of minimizing AIPAC’s ability to twist the words into a weapon against him.

in reply to gravitas_deficiency

This line very specifically implies that Zohran has crossed the line in the past and does not make the correct distinction.

in reply to geneva_convenience

No it doesn’t. It’s an acknowledgement that the Israeli government and zionists in general have a strong tendency to jump on and misrepresent even the most mildly critical statements, and to be careful in that context. Sanders is providing pragmatic, tactical political advice, nothing more. And that’s fine and appropriate. Stop trying to outrage farm against people who actually do support Palestinians and are meaningfully against genocide.

I’m not going to litigate semantics of the English language with you.

In my estimation, you are reading far more nuance into that statement than is either implied or meant directly. I disagree with your evaluation, and I think you’re just trying to pointlessly stir up trouble where there’s not actually a problem.

No. Bernie Sanders said words. These words mean things. And Sanders knows exactly what he is doing.

It's a complex issue Bernie is alluding to. There are a lot of Jewish people who think of Israel of sort of "Their place" in the world where they are centered and the controlling stake of culture. People who are raised to think this way feel critism towards the place as an attack on their Jewishness. Those feelings can override and get in the way of treating Isreal as a country, with a political agenda and make it feel as though it were a criticism of Jewish people.

You know that whole "facts don't care about your feelings" thing the right gets on about? It's actually backwards. Feelings do not care about facts and if you don't adequately explain your purpose you can make people feel victimized even when they aren't. Jewish people who feel victimized by critism of Israel are responding to a mix of cultural programming because the idea of Israel is their security blanket. Problem is the security blanket isn't actually securing them from anything, it was just a tool to soothe anxieties about having a place to retreat to free of persecution... and now that the security blanket has been proven to be woven out of asbestos and warcrimes the trauma of prying peoples attachment from it is causing damage amongst a historically persecuted group. This is Bernie's reminder - to be sensitive to the process of individual trauma while detangling them from the genocidal regime it's emotionally fuzed to.

in reply to DrivebyHaiku

It's not complex at all. It's Nazi-like settler colonialism.

And Zohran already very clearly seperates Zionism and Judaism. Bernie is concern trolling. As is anyone pretending he has a valid point.

in reply to geneva_convenience

Not saying Israel is complex. Dealing with the victims of the propaganda is complex.

Compassion isn't just good praxis, people who fall back on feeling victimized double down on whatever their base investment is. If you want people to accept facts and actually change their minds you have to engage the person's feelings first.

in reply to DrivebyHaiku

Dealing with the propagand is complex and Zohran is doing an amazing job at it. Bernie is smearing him with blood libel here pretending he isn't.

Lastly, Hamas has been very clear, both before its barbaric attack on October 7th and after that attack, that their goal is perpetual warfare and the destruction of Israel. Just last week a spokesman for Hamas, Mr. Taher El-Nounou, told the New York Times, “I hope that the state of war with Israel will become permanent on all the borders, and that the Arab world will stand with us.” I am not quite sure how you negotiate a ceasefire with a terrorist organization that is dedicated to perpetual war.

Thinkpad T480s i5 (gen 8) touchscreen - does the touchscreen work on Debian?

Just picked up a 16GB T480s i5 8265U with a touchscreen for just over 100GBP - is this a decent price? I don't think it has an NVMe but regular 256GB SSD though.

I think this is the slowest version of the processor for the T480s? I was a little hesitant about the price, but it seems to be in fairly good used condition - I get "handed down from business-owner dad and was used for schoolwork and a bit of gogs gaming" vibes about it.

Does the touchscreen work happily under linux? Debian specifically - SID most likely. Is the FHD significantly worse than the WQHD? Apparently it has 10 touchpoints under win 11. Is the touch version of display lesser quality than non-touch? Is it matte? As a coder, I don't really foresee me using it too much, but it'll be nice to have if it doesn't make the display poorer quality.

A little excited either way as my first thinkpad!

According to a reddit post, the touchscreen should work in Ubuntu 18.04, so it will likely work in Dibian SID.

ONly one true way to know for sure. Install Debian sid, and see if it works for yourself.

You could also try live-booting Debian and see if it works out of the box.

Allenarsi...prepararsi

Yesterday, a new episode of the BSDNow podcast was released.
Episode number 620 — yes, exactly, 620. Since it’s a weekly show, you can do the math and realize just how much dedication its creators, editors, and hosts have put into it. A huge round of applause and thanks to Benedict Reuschling, Tom Jones, Jason Tubnor, and everyone else involved in making this fantastic podcast happen.

BSDNow has been my faithful companion during road trips for many years. And when I’ve had a long day, my wife will ask, “Why aren’t you coming to bed? It’s late!” Then, without waiting for an answer: “Ah right, it’s Thursday.”
And I go: “Of course – there’s a new episode of BSDNow!”

In this episode, Benedict reads my post The server that wasn’t meant to exist – not too technical, more of a horror story, but still on topic: the server was running NetBSD.

‘Lied to their workers’: CBA’s ‘shameful act’ while sacking staff [Deceptive offshoring of hundreds of tech roles]

The [Finance Sector Union] said the roles being advertised by CBA India had the exact same job titles as those impacted by the redundancies.

"We do not believe that the redundancies outlined in these change processes are in fact genuine redundancies and that in doing so, CBA has breached the terms of the Agreement,” [FSU National Secretary] Ms Angrisano said, pointing out that genuine redundancies mean the role is no longer required. This is the very definition of bad faith.”

“All Australians are paying for the sham redundancy actions of the CBA. Not only are Australian workers being unfairly and reasonably sacked but this is being subsidised by all taxpayers.

“Bona fide redundancies are taxed concessionally in the hands of the workers. It is especially disgusting that the nation’s richest company is also reducing the tax take as it makes the final payment to hundreds of Australians that we know are being sacked solely to have their work performed offshore.”

Dumb-arse inside

This is a story all about how... one sad old sack finally “got” Linux distros.

I've been a very casual Linux user over 20-odd years, mostly on secondary PCs and generally sticking with noob-friendly distros, but only in the last few months I’ve become serious and started to learn the how and why of Linux.

Like many others, this year is my own personal year of Linux on the desktop. My server, media box and laptops are all now running Fedora, only my primary PC remains left behind on Win10 because of critical software keeping me tied to Windows - but from next week that is no longer needed and the shackles are off! I've sampled several different Distros this year to find the perfect fit for this very moment, but this search reminded me how the sheer number of distros annoyed me.

I've always seen the vast number of Distros as wasteful. Effort that could be put into pushing Linux forward rather than creating another fork sideways. I'm not sure now what I thought a distro actually was but I've now come to realise the genius of this (not to say there isn't any replication and waste between Distros).

I had settled on KDE Fedora as my distro of choice some time ago. Then, when I found the idea of an immutable distro, this appealed (to help prevent my dumb-arse breaking things), so I pivoted to Kinoite to give me exactly what I wanted. All I needed was to work out how to get Steam running. Many of you can probably already see where this is going.

In a moment of Picard-level face-palming, I started exploring Bazzite thinking this would give me an idea of what's required. The distro itself looked good and when I went digging deeper, I found an Immutable, Fedora base in either KDE or Gnome. Bazzite is basically Atomic Fedora, pre-configured for gaming! Face-smack. Maybe I thought Bazzite was based on Arch which is why I hadn't looked at it before, but now I better understood the genius of Linux distros. The Bazzite team could take the core of what they want, then tweak it for a specific use-case and release it, thinking others might like it too. They're not reinventing the wheel as I first believed, they were building upon previous work. One of the greatest strengths of open source. I probably already knew this but somehow, I hadn't quite put the pieces together in one place.

TL;DR: I’m a numpty

Tune in tomorrow when I argue that no one should recommend Arch to anyone - and why that's a good thing...

Wait until you realize that you don't have to reinstall the OS to go from Fedora Kinoite to Bazzite or the otherway around, just rebase and reboot 🤭

Fedora seems similar to clear Linux os, on the idempotent/deterministic scale. Swupd was quite fricticious, not very intuitive to users
in reply to abcdqfr

Since it's an immutable OS it's a full switch over, and doesn't have any of the issues that a normal OS like Mint would have doing that.
in reply to meathorse

From someone who’s a dumbarse too, bazzite is fricken genius for someone who want a distro ready to game.

Linux Users- Why?

(Also extends to people who refuse to use Linux too!)

Every unique Linux Desktop setup tells a story, about the user's journey and their trials. I feel like every decision, ranging from theming to functional choices, is a direct reflection of who we are on the inside.

An open-ended question for the Linux users here: Why do you use what you do? What are the choices you've had to make when planning it out?

I'll go first:
I use OpenSUSE Tumbleweed with the Niri Scrolling Compositor(Rofi, Alacritty and Waybar), recently switched from CosmicDE

I run this setup because I keep coming back to use shiny new-ish software on a daily basis.

I prefer this over arch(which I used for 2 years in the covid arc), because it's quite a bit more stable despite being a rolling release distro.

I chose niri because I miss having a dual monitor on the go, and tiling windows isn't good enough for me. Scrolling feels smooth, fancy and just right. The overview menu is very addicting, and I may not be able to go back to Windows after this!

This was my first standalone WM/Compositor setup, so there were many little pains, but no regrets.

Would love to hear more thoughts, perspectives and experiences!

in reply to sounddrill

Arch because it just works once you set it up (yeah, paradoxically), and both AUR and the official repos are fresh yet reliable
in reply to sounddrill

I use Mint, with little customization.

Mint basically gets out of my way, I care about the ability to get my work done.

I also prefer the windows paradigm rather than the Mac paradigm. IMHO Mint does it better than windows now.

Sustainably, in the ecological sense, has little to do with the energy source. Wheter its wood, coal, oil, hydro or solar, they can all be unsustainable. Cars have an ecological footprnt upon the earth that can't be sustainable (urban sprawl, etc). A good target would be an 80-90% reduction
