Did Superman call out Israel?

One of the most widely circulated Reddit posts under the subreddit "Israel" encapsulated the concern from pro-Israel audiences:

“Have you all seen the new Superman movie? I find it so disrespectful and distressing that a superhero created by two Jewish artists is now being used to promote anti-Israeli messages to the world… I can't understand how this was green-lit at a time like this with global antisemitism on a rise... Of course, the invaders are portrayed as white while the victims are predominantly brown. And of course, if Israel speaks out against the film, it would be seen as 'well, if the shoe fits.'"

Users responding on Twitter wrote: “It’s so funny that they instantly recognize that the movie is about Israel’s genocide in Gaza without being told and yet still have the temerity to get offended and express their indignation in public. It’s like how come you know the evil murderous villains are Israel, guys?”

How Germany continues to manufacture consent for genocide

Manufacturing what political scientist Donatella della Porta describes as a “moral panic dynamic” of antisemitism has proven itself to be a very effective way for post-October 7 Germany to shift public attention away from the reality of German complicity in yet another genocide, while simultaneously refashioning the fight against Jew-hatred “into an instrument of racialisation and repression” against Palestine solidarity.

Just a week after the United4Gaza mass protest in Berlin, at the end of which police arrested co-organiser Rjoob, the co-governing Social Democrats (SPD) passed a motion to combat antisemitism at their federal party congress.

Entitled “Never again is now! Protect Jewish life!” in a nod to last year’s much criticised Bundestag resolution of near-identical name-giving, Motion I06 is yet another red herring designed to distract the public from the real problem: "Israel’s" genocide in Gaza and the corresponding anti-Palestinian authoritarianism of the colluding German state in the service of a foreign entity.

Whilst WhatsApp is still owned by meta and I'm sure the US military would have a lot use for the metadata they collect, let's be honest, I'm sure Putin would prefer if Russians switched to a platform they can spy on themselves
in reply to troglodyke

I've read that MAX (typical horse taste of modern Russian official names, similar to Rosgvardia, Gosuslugi, Rostech and so on ; Soviet-time many-many-many caps abbreviations are boring, but somehow better) in its current early versions is a piece of spyware looking like Telegram, literally saving passwords and banking data and browsing history. Well, I'm almost certain Telegram itself is not much better.

Installed Briar on my phone and persuaded my sister, and to my grandma's today.

I like the idea of these meshes but until Linux phones become a practical option it doesn’t matter. Apple will restrict the hardware, Google will let Gemini spy on anything that passes through the phone, the phone situation is a mess.

I don’t really blame governments for that either. I blame fucking business majors.

in reply to Davriellelouna

A little background info:

Russia's been sponsoring one of its oligarchs' business by eliminating their competition.

First, they restricted YouTube's speed to an unusable state to force people to switch to RuTube (they didn't)

Now they're trying to force people to switch from WhatsApp (and potentially Telegram) to MAX, which they want to be Russia's version of WeChat.

-

Add the fact that our politicians are obsessed with controlling all of the media and you'll get the gist of it.

I'm building a Tux-based Game Studio

I know other devs interested in making Tux games but before I begin with them I figured I would ask the community what they would like to see

A Conker/Golden Eye type game? DOOM-like? Farming Sim? Fighting Game similar to Smash? Open World RPG similar to older Bethesda games? RTS like StarCraft? Turn-Based like Final Fantasy or Expedition 33? Going mad for power in a 4X? Another genre entirely?

What genre would you all prefer to see have a game made first? I will basing it off of likes

I plan to make a game in each genre but for now figuring out which to do first is the goal. Have concepts, tools, experience, devs, etc ready to make anything the community wants

Something simple like Super Money Ball maybe but with a snow ball and some gliding effect? It should be a bit unique.

It's literally an article from a British news source that is pro-Ukraine. The fact that you are focused on the poster and not the posted is the purest form of ad hominem. You should be embarrassed.

I love how you can post an article from one of the most rabidly pro Ukrainian publications here and libs will swarm in with downvotes because it doesn't conform to their fantasies.

The CEO seemingly having an affair with the head of HR at his company at the Coldplay concert is a viral video for the ages, but it is also, unfortunately, emblematic of our current private surveillance and social media hellscape.

The video, which is now viral on every platform that we can possibly think of, has been covered by various news outlets, and is Pop Crave official, shows Andy Byron, the CEO of a company called Astronomer, with his arms around Astronomer’s head of HR, Kristen Cabot. The jumbotron cuts from one fan to this seemingly happy couple. They both simultaneously die inside; “Oh look at this happy couple,” Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin says. The woman covers her face and spins away. The man ducks out of frame. “Either they’re having an affair or they’re very shy,” Martin said. The camera pans to another company executive standing next to them, who is seemingly shaking out of discomfort.

It is hard to describe how viral this is at the moment, in a world in which so many awful things are occurring and in which nothing holds anyone’s attention for any length of time and in a world in which we are all living in our own siloed realities. “Andy Byron” is currently the most popular trending Google term in the United States, with more than double the searches of the next closest term.

There are so many levels to this embarrassment—the Coldplay of it all, the HR violation occurring on jumbotron, etc—that one could likely write a doctoral dissertation on this 15 second video.

"Vessels are going to start to avoid calling at Israeli ports. It's not about getting hit by the Houthis, but the chance of not being insured," a maritime security official told MEE. "Does a secondary or tertiary link to Israel mean you can be denied coverage?"

The Eternity C had no direct link to Israel, but Cosmoship vessels regularly called at Israeli ports last year. The CEO of Stem Shipping, the owner of Magic Seas, acknowledged that his vessels sometimes call at Israeli ports also.

Scoop: Israel seeks U.S. help on deals to move Palestinians out of Gaza

The director of Israel’s Mossad spy agency visited Washington this week seeking U.S. help in convincing countries to take hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from Gaza, two sources with knowledge of issue tell Axios.

The spy chief, David Barnea, told White House envoy Steve Witkoff that Israel has been speaking in particular with Ethiopia, Indonesia and Libya.

The Israeli government’s goal of removing much of Gaza’s population is hugely controversial. While Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government claims such a “relocation” would be “voluntary,” U.S. and Israeli legal experts have labeled it a war crime.

Netflix uses generative AI in one of its shows for first time

Ted Sarandos, a co-chief executive of Netflix, said the Argentinian science fiction series El Eternauta (The Eternaut) was the first it had made that involved using generative AI footage.

He said the series, which follows survivors of a rapid and devastating toxic snowfall, involved Netflix and visual effects (VFX) artists using AI to show a building collapsing in Buenos Aires.

“Using AI-powered tools, they were able to achieve an amazing result with remarkable speed and, in fact, that VFX sequence was completed 10 times faster than it could have been completed with traditional VFX tools and workflows,” he said.

He said the use of AI tools allowed Netflix to fund the show at a much lower cost than is typical for a big-budget production.

“The cost of [the special effects without AI] just wouldn’t have been feasible for a show in that budget,” Sarandos said.

Probably a similar step from practical effects to computer rendered effects. Gain some, loose some, and best results will probably be gotten with a mixed technique made by professionals who know what they are doing.

CBP Agents Can Have Gang Tattoos — as Long as They Cover Them Up

When Franco José Caraballo Tiapa arrived at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in early February for a routine check-in, he thought he had little reason to worry.

Caraballo, 26, had arrived in the U.S. in 2023 after fleeing persecution in Venezuela, lived with his wife in Dallas, and had no criminal record, his immigration attorney Martin Rosenow told The Intercept. He’d checked in with ICE regularly while waiting on his asylum claim. But when an agent took special interest in his tattoos, they detained him and put him on a bus to the Bluebonnet Detention Facility in Anson, Texas — and eventually on a plane to CECOT.

For Caraballo and at least half a dozen other men, U.S. officials’ assumptions about their body art played a significant role in classifying them as gang members and disappearing them to the notorious prison in El Salvador. The Intercept found that a very different standard applies for the federal agents tasked with keeping migrants out of the country and rounding up those targeted by President Donald Trump’s deportation obsession.

On a public “grooming standards” webpage aimed at prospective Customs and Border Protection agents, the agency advises that any tattoos and brandings must be concealed if they are “obscene or gang-related.” In other words, agents are allowed to have the very markings for which Caraballo and others were disappeared into a Salvadoran gulag — as long as they keep them out of sight.

Hamas says Israel rejected ceasefire deal including release of all captives, adds ready for lengthy battle

In his first video message since March 6, the spokesperson of Hamas’s military wing Qassam Brigades has said the Palestinian group repeatedly offered to release all captives at once to conclude a comprehensive ceasefire deal, but Israel rejected the proposal.

Abu Obeida said the group would not agree to an interim truce in the future if a ceasefire agreement was not reached and accused Israel of intransigence.

Abu Obeida also said Hamas fighters are “ready to continue a long battle of attrition”.
