Russia’s war against Ukraine

War with Russia could last until 2034, Ukraine’s ex-top general Zaluzhnyi warns. “If we try to establish a ceasefire without building up our future defenses, the war will drag on for many more years,” former Commander-in-Chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi said.

Global Starlink outage disrupts Ukrainian front lines. Starlink experienced a global outage on July 24, with the cause still unknown. Ukraine’s military confirmed the disruption affected connectivity along the front lines.

Over 23,000 civilians, 113 children trapped in active combat zones in Donetsk Oblast, official says. Ukrainian and Western military experts assess that Russia may escalate its offensive operations during the 50-day period U.S. President Donald Trump allocated for Moscow to reach a ceasefire settlement.

Russia plans sweeping gasoline export ban to stabilize domestic market, sources tell Reuters. The Russian government has resorted to temporary gasoline export bans multiple times over the past two years, typically to address domestic fuel shortages and alleviate high prices.

Anti-corruption

We all hear what society is saying’ — Zelensky vows anti-corruption plan within 2 weeks amid backlash over controversial bill. “We see what people expect from state institutions — ensured justice and the effective functioning of each institution,” President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

Zelensky submits new bill restoring anti-graft agencies’ independence after protests. The bill follows Zelensky’s decision on July 22 to sign a bill that effectively destroyed the independence of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO).

US Senator Lindsey Graham criticises Zelensky’s signing of controversial anti-corruption law. Lindsey urged Kyiv to reconsider the law as “one of the most widely used talking points for ending support for Ukraine is that it was awash with corruption.”

Changes to Bitnami Catalog on August 28th

Hey there selfhosters,

I imagine some of you are selfhosting Kubernetes and that you might have used some Bitnami images/helmchars.

Bitnami communicated recently about some changes in their catalog [here] (github.com/bitnami/charts/issu…), and will be effective at the end of August.

For the simple version, they are migrating images from docker.io/bitnami to docker.io/bitnamilegacy, implying some changes there.

But to be expected is that at some point even docker.io/bitnamilegacy will be removed (or of course pay a license to them to access their “secure” images)

I was wondering if someone was affected by this ?

Cheers !

in reply to Burn1ngBull3t

Old free images won't be removed but since they won't get any kind of update, are essentially useless
in reply to Burn1ngBull3t

Many helm charts, like authentik or forgejo integrate bitnami helmcharts for their databases. So that's why this is concerning to me,

But, I was planning to switch to operators like cloudnativepostgres for my databases instead and disable the builtin bitnami images. When using the builtin bitnami images, automatic migration between major releases is not supported, you have to do it yourself manually and that dissapointed me.

Hey. Thank you all for the answers. It made me see that there are more devices to get to know. Like one of you has written, some devices may be so niche, that support isnt going too stay long. And, what to do then? Is it another device that will be in the schelff? Im going to look more into Kobo, and Boox, at first. But yir its just easyer to have a device in the hand, and then make a choice 😀

in reply to with chicken

One warning for Boox, although I definitely reccomend the device, the first-party support can be lackluster, so if you're in a country where BOOX is on Amazon I would reccomend buying through there since Amazon has a better returns service.

in reply to Davriellelouna

As scummy as all of this is, it is a real problem that most medical services and offices do not have traditional payment plans. They expect the large amount to be paid all at once.
in reply to Shirasho

It's insane that this is the case these days, but I went through this years ago and ended up having to let the bill go to collections, just to get a payment plan on it. They even ended up discounting the bill heavily after a while and let me pay a reduced sum to close out the account. How is a literal collections agency more reasonable than a fucking hospital? (Also the medical bill was for an asthma inhaler refill visit to a small free standing ER which ended up costing >$3,000 for checking my vitals and handing me a prescription.
in reply to Shirasho

The real problem is not having universal single payer healthcare.
in reply to snooggums

And as a result of our ass backwards system it's not uncommon for me to see 2-3 bills for ONE visit. Of course, each bill has its own payment system too.
in reply to Davriellelouna

The problem with US healthcare costs is insurance. This includes, Medicaid, Obamacare, and Medicare, not just private insurance. Too much insurance, and not enough shopping around for lower prices, effectively as not having any competition. In basic economics, people shop around for cheaper prices among providers who should be competing among each other. This is basic economics. Why is that so hard for Americans to understand? More insurance is not going to fix the problem. Americans need to go through basic economics as high school curriculum, because their current education isn't serving them well. They have no ability to understand causation and easily mislead by the corrupt politicians they vote for. Paul Krugman, for example, could not see how inflation could be produced by squeezing supply chains, and flooding the economy with money.

USAID report finds no evidence of Hamas stealing US-funded aid

A recent US government internal review rebuffs claims that Palestinian group Hamas systematically diverted US-funded humanitarian aid, challenging previous assertions by Israel and the US.

An unreported US Agency for International Development (USAID) study examined 156 cases of lost or stolen aid between October 2023 and May 2025, and found no evidence of Hamas benefiting from US-supplied aid.

The report contradicts claims by Israel and the US, which have been used to justify a controversial new armed private aid operation, which has resulted over 1,000 deaths among starving aid-seekers.

Rise of the Idiot Interviewer

Podcast bros are interviewing presidents and power players without doing basic research beforehand. The result is a propagandistic catastrophe.

A pair of pro-Trump Canadian prankster YouTubers called the “Nelk Boys” recently interviewed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Netanyahu is responsible for the starvation of Gaza and a war on the population that kills hundreds of people per day. It is an unconscionable crime against humanity, which is why he is wanted by the International Criminal Court.

The Nelk Boys, by their own admission, did not do a good job interviewing Netanyahu, asking questions like: “You [and Trump] are very tight, right? Would you call it a ‘bromance’?” They asked Netanyahu what his go-to McDonald’s order is. They raved about the nightlife in Tel Aviv. (“Tel Aviv is lit!”) The closest they came to asking a critical question was when Nelk Boy Kyle Forgeard said that “I’ll see or read stuff on X and people will say, like Israel is killing babies or they’re starving people,” to which Netanyahu just replied “That’s completely false.” (It is true.) Forgeard admitted during the episode that “I see so much stuff about what’s going on in Israel and Iran and Palestine, and to be honest, I just really don’t know what is going on there.” That certainly showed.

Unfortunately, the Nelk Boys are not unique in being completely unprepared to interview political leaders. A number of independent podcasters who have interviewed Donald Trump and JD Vance have been similarly unwilling to do the basic research necessary to carry out an interviewer’s job. These podcasters do not consider themselves right-wing, and in fact hold many left-leaning viewpoints, but because they have totally failed in the task of studying the issues they’re having conversations about, they end up spreading unchecked propaganda.

Look at the kinds of questions that Lex Fridman asked Donald Trump, for instance:

  • What drives you more, the love of winning or the hate of losing?
    • You’ve said that politics is a dirty game… So if it is a game, how do you win at that?
    • You’ve been successful in business, you’ve been successful in politics. What do you think is the difference between gaining success between the two different disparate worlds?
    • How do you think you’ll do in the debate coming up, that’s in a few days?

You will not be surprised to learn that Trump thinks he will do well in the debate! From these ludicrous softballs, we learn nothing whatsoever of value about how Trump will govern the country. But even when Fridman approaches the realm of a substantive question, he allows Trump to get away with unbelievable bullshit. For instance, when Fridman says “Let me ask you about Project 2025. So you’ve publicly said that you don’t have any direct connection to—” Trump cuts him off, says he has nothing to do with Project 2025, and Fridman moves on.(After being elected, Trump appointed several of the project’s architects to key positions, and it is now estimated that nearly half of Project 2025 has already been implemented.)

A good interviewer would have gone through Project 2025 item by item, demanding more clarity on whether Trump actually disagreed with the goals of Project 2025, and asking which parts of it Trump would specifically pledge not to implement.

That at least Windows need to be by default debloated and customized to the root to be an reasonable private OS, is nothing new. If you dual-boot different distributions and want to keep old versions of distros for upgrades, how do you proceed?

Say you are dual-booting Debian and Arch and want to upgrade Debian oldstable to Debian stable. But you want to keep the old installation available as a fall-back option. And you also want to re-use your configuration files and dot files, but in a way that incompatible changes to your dot files in the new Debian or Arch version do never break the old program versions.

How do you do that ?

(I describe my own approach in a comment below.)

Questa voce è stata modificata (1 mese fa)
in reply to just_another_person

  • having a second system that boots can be very handy if something breaks - for example one can chroot intp the other system and fix a missing grub install
  • when disk space becomes scarce, one csn mount it where it makes sense
in reply to HaraldvonBlauzahn

No:

1) Every single modern distro keeps multiple known-good previously running copies of the system to boot back into
2) The disk space argument is just insane. Having TWO versions of an OS takes TWICE as much space as having one. I don't even get what you mean. You can mount a disk anywhere at any time
3) No part of any installed Linux distro can get into a state where it cannot be accessed, unless you encrypt or delete your entire disk without thinking
4) BTRFS or ZFS can shift back time or keep snapshots, so none of your reasoning is needed at all. Same with immutable distros.

Maybe drops open-source support - pivots to B2B data and scenario planning

The team behind Maybe just released version v0.6.0, and with it announced a major shift: the project is officially moving away from open-source development and pivoting to a B2B-focused model.

From now on, Maybe will focus on enterprise-grade data analysis and scenario planning tools for businesses. As a result, there will be no further updates, maintenance, or community support

This marks the end of Maybe as a public, code-based personal finance tool.

If you’ve been using it personally, v0.6.0 is the final release. You can keep using it as-is, but don’t expect updates.

I largely agree with this.

My biggest point of agreement is that:

DPRK should he able to chart their own course.

It's evident to me that this is not the case so long as the Kim regime is in charge.

My biggest disagreement is that we don't really know what kind of wealth the regime controls; they aren't exactly forthcoming with that information. From the outside though, they resemble the economic distribution of many other dictatorships propped up as client states by empires.

This was a pleasant conversation though; a nice break from telling fascists to get fucked.

I think you should use this as an opportunity to get to learn the political structure of the DPRK a bit more. The Kims are beloved, but not all-powerful, the WPK isn't even the only party in government, but a coalition.

But, take care!

SF-Based Internet Archive Is Now a Federal Depository Library. What Does That Mean?

Internet Archive founder Brewster Kahle said that while the nonprofit organization has always functioned as a library, this new designation makes it easier to work with the other federal depository libraries. That, he said, is a service to everyone.

“ I think there is a great deal of excitement to have an organization such as the Internet Archive, which has physical collections of materials, but is really known mostly for being accessible as part of the internet,” Kahle said. “And helping integrate these materials into things like Wikipedia, so that the whole internet ecosystem gets stronger as digital learners get closer access into the government materials.”

Technology reshared this.

in reply to CleoCommunist

Trump has exactly as much control over it now as he did before: none. It literally just means that all official government documents go to them for archiving. This is cool and neat and raises the profile of the Internet Archive, but other than that it doesn't really mean anything. Trump can of course do some undemocratic shenanigans to them, but no more or less than he could before this designation.
